† LARSON
Gerald F. Larson age 89 of Saranac went to be with his Lord on June 22, 2019 in Ionia. He was born March 27, 1930 in Berlin Twp. the son of Elmer and Sarah (Aldrich) Larson. Gerald graduated from Lake Odessa High School class of 1948. He was class president, member of the FFA and was an Allstate Football Player. In his early years Gerald worked as an appliance repairman for Whirlpool and then as the head of maintenance for the Saranac Creamery. Gerald spent most of his career as a Dairy Farmer in Berlin Township and then in his later years worked for the Lake Odessa Livestock Auction, he also loved working on and restoring older John Deere Tractors. Gerald married Shirley Leroy August 13, 1950 she preceded him in death in 2001. He later married Deb Baylis on May 4, 2002. Surviving are his loving wife Deb Larson of Saranac; children, Kathy (Mark) Adams of Saranac, Jim Larson of Grand Rapids and Laura (Paul) Rockhold of Ionia; step daughter, Tiffany (Mike) DeGraaf of Newaygo; grandchildren; Mike (Missy) Wilcox, Michelle (Jon) Pepper, Sarah Wilcox, Zach (Amanda) Larson, Max Larson, Hayden Larson, Josh (Pam) Rockhold, Luke Rockhold, Peter Rockhold, Samantha (Shane) MacKinnon and John Mitchell; brother, Richard Larson of South Carolina; sister in law, Jean Larson of Grand Rapids. 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Preceding Gerald in death were his parents, first wife Shirley, sister Grace Larson, brother Robert Larson, sister and brother-in-law Alice and John Smith and sister-in-law Marilyn Larson. Special thanks to the Memory Care staff at Green Acres and Kindred Hospice. Funeral Services for Gerald will be held Saturday, June 29th at 2:30 P.M. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with his grandson, Pastor Peter Rockhold officiating. Visitations will be on Friday 4-7 p.m. and Saturday 1:30 until time of service. Those wishing, may make memorial contributions to Kindred Hospice. Everett Wilson Vogt, age 78, of Ionia, passed away June 21, 2019. He was born August 11, 1940, the son of Dale and Audrey (Davis) Vogt. Everett loved the outdoors; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and woodworking. He was very hard-working, and a great provider for his family. Preceding Everett in death are his parents; son, Robert Vogt; sister, Helen Vogt; and brothers, Darwin and Robert

THE ‘FORGOTTEN WAR’ Started June 25, 1950
Fighting Ended July 27, 1953 when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed creating the DMZ (demilitarized zone). Although no peace treaty was ever signed to end the war! Bob Sayers of Ionia is a veteran of this war and has vivid memories of the ‘Hell of War’! Here is a picture that a very young Bob took three weeks after arriving in Korea. It depicts what is left of a tent full of U.S. soldiers after taking a mortar round. Along with many young soldiers killed and many more wounded the Marines sent in the only available ‘copters to airlift the wounded to M.A.S.H. camps in the area. The Marine in charge had to make the decision of which soldiers had the best chance at survival. Leaving the more badly wounded with no medical assistance and little chance of living for another batch of helicopters. A decision no person should ever have to make! In an effort to ensure that no one forgets the sacrafices made by our brave soldiers in uniform Bob invites everyone to visit the Belding Freedom Memorial Wall. And, please, donate to the ‘Korean War Veterans Family and Friends’ Buy-A-Brick program. Calley plan brings transparency, clarity to Michigan’s campaign finance laws The Michigan House today approved state Rep. Julie Calley’s plan to simplify and improve transparency in Michigan’s campaign finance laws. Calley, of Portland, said her legislation will help people understand the campaign finance process by eliminating inconsistencies and providing precise rules, especially regarding prizes and gifts associated with fundraising. “Our campaign finance regulations do not clearly address this practice, but it is taking place throughout the state,” Calley said. “We must update our laws to provide clarity and transparency.” Current practice is to allow a connected organization – a trade organization, for example – to

So, a $1,000 contribution could result in a $25 gift. Calley’s plan would cap gifts and prizes at $5 or 10 percent of the contribution, whichever is less. Her plan also addresses how these transactions would be declared on campaign finance reports. “We’ve simplified the process and made it more transparent by adding the reporting requirement, which is not currently in place,” Calley said.
