School Board Petitions Available Saranac Community School district residents will be voting for four Board of Education members on November 8, 2022. The current four year terms of Sarah Doll, Brad Hesche, David Price & Theodore VanKuiken expires on December 31, 2022. Are you interested in being a board member? † BLACKMER Sonja Carol Blackmer age 75 of Ionia passed away peacefully June 21, 2022 surrounded by her children. She was born August 14, 1946 in Ionia the daughter of Durwood and Lucille (White) Thorp. Sonja married Robert Blackmer March 9, 1963. She is survived by her son Tim (Maria) Blackmer of Ionia and daughter Robin (Raul) Alvarez of Grand Rapids. Daughter-in-law Denise Farrell of Lake Odessa. Grandchildren; Kylee (Zach) Wilson, Natalie (Ryan) Urie, Mason Blackmer, Nicholas (Jordan) Blackmer, Rachael Blackmer (Kristen Nelson),Lily Alvarez and Emma Alvarez(Fiance’ Spencer Russo). Great grandchildren; Mavrik, Malori and Maxwell Wilson, Clayton, Leland, Hattie and Etta Urie. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, son Mark and sister Kay. She was born December 30, 1939 in Lansing the daughter of Russell G. and Dorothy (VanAntwerp) Slee. Ann married Clarence Fulcher November 15, 1958 he preceded her in death February 7, 2007. She helped manage the family farm with her husband Clarence, care for their family and worked manufacturing. Surviving Ann are her daughters; Kimberly (Brian) Clack of Ionia, Lori Brown and John Clack of Ionia and Lisa Wall of Ionia. Step-daughter; Judy (David) Rose of Texas. Grandchildren; Dusty (Abbi) Brown, Jennifer (Richard Bazen) Clack, Gregory Clack, Jessica Brown, Zachary Wall, Daniel Wall, Mary May (Leroy) Lewis and Melinda (Johnny) Taylor. 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, step-daughter Annie May, 2 brothers and 1 sister, several in-law’s and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia Wednesday, June 29th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be at the funeral home 1 hour prior to services. He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ellen Goodmiller, brother in-law Charles Listerman and several aunts and uncles. Michael is survived by his sisters Terri Listerman, and Ellen (Ronald) Bowling. He is also survived by his nieces Amanda (Wayne) Willaman, Erin (Jeff) Melnick, and his nephew Logan (Sarah) Bowling along with great nieces and nephew Macy, Natalie Willaman and Jaxon, Elise Melnick. Mike graduated from Ionia High School in 1976 and took other vocational training over the course of his life. He later worked in the family business specializing in sales/retail, parts and service at Giants Enterprises in Ionia, Michigan. Prior to retiring Mike finished his career at Grand Pointe Marina in Lansing, Michigan. Mike enjoyed traveling and took many trips over the years. He enjoyed snowmobiling with family and friends in Michigan and Canada and he enjoyed traveling to many family reunions with relatives from Oklahoma, Tennessee and Kansas. Mike also greatly enjoyed a May 2022 sibling trip to Massachusetts that included visiting historical family homes, seeing the witches of Salem, visiting the beautiful coastline and beaches, shopping in antique shops and flea markets, eating fresh seafood, watching Harry Potter movies in the hotel, flying first class, and being driven around by his sisters. Over the years Mike enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. He liked collecting Gulf Oil memorabilia, attending Classic Car shows and events, and driving, tinkering with and showing his 1959 Thunderbird. Mike was also active in his community helping with the Boy Scouts and participating with Jaycees activities and projects. After Mike retired, he enjoyed spending time in his yard, mowing and doing yard projects as well as building model trucks and cars, taking drives, and going to the movies. Mike was a family man and a true friend to others. He loved to spend time with extended family at family reunions. He enjoyed many holiday celebrations with family especially with his great nieces and nephew. Mike also truly looked forward to visits and phone conversations with his special friends Colleen, Marilyn, and Paul. Mike will be forever remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends. A gathering to celebrate Mike’s life will take place on Sunday June 26, 2022 from 12pm - 3pm at Just Like Home, located at 330 Fourth street Ionia, Michigan 48846. A private burial with family is planned following the celebration. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to your favorite charity in memory of Mike Goodmiller. † HURT James Earl Hurt age 76 of Ionia passed away June 16, 2022 at home with his family. He was born October 19, 1945 in Cincinnati, Ohio the son of Doran and Reva Hurt. James entered the Air Force in 1964 serving during the Vietnam War as a Military Policeman, being honorably discharged in 1968 as a Sergeant. He went on to marry Jacqueline M. Hetrick August 19, 1966 in Brimley. Together they raised 3 children. Surviving James are his wife Jackie Hurt of Ionia. Children; Kenneth Earl Hurt of Ionia, Tina Marie Hurt of Ionia and Richard Alan Hurt and Nicki of Missouri. Grandchildren; Rodney (Lindsay) Minier, Tyler (Katie) Minier, Richard Hurt Jr., Jacqueline Sue Casey, Kenneth A. Hurt, Austin Hurt, Ashley Hurt and Brandon Hurt. Great grandchildren Aries, Liam and Lucas. Brother Roy (Patti) Hurt of Ohio. James was preceded in death by several brothers and sister and his parents. He was a life member of the Sheridan VFW Post. He was born April 10, 1930 in Ionia, the son of Gerald D. and Leona W. (Bennett) Johnston. Gordon married Coreen J. Cottrell June 18, 1955 at First Christian Church in Ionia. He served in the Army during the Korean War and worked as a Corrections Officer for the State of Michigan for 35 years. Gordon was a member of Shiloh Community Church. He was devoted to his faith, family, and country. He loved to bowl, fish, and bow and gun hunt. Gordon, affectionately known as Papa to his grandkids, was an extraordinary storyteller. Surviving Gordon are his loving wife of 67 years Coreen Johnston of Ionia. Daughters; Lynne Rowland of Palmetto, FL and Pamela (James) Kulhanek of Avon, IN. Grandchildren; Jordan (Crystal) Kulhanek of Wolverine, MI, Alyssa (Brian) Prevost of Avon, IN, Parker (Kiersten) Kulhanek of Speedway, IN, Brianna Rowland of Burlington, VT and Blake Rowland of Ann Arbor, MI. Great granddaughter Gabriella Kulhanek. Brothers and Sisters in law Gloria Spencer, Ivan (Judy) Cottrell and Marvel (Ronald) Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings and their spouses Gerald (Rita) Johnston, Natalie (Art) Witter, Ronald (Beverly) Johnston and brother-in-law Elwood Spencer. She married James Goodman in 1952 he passed away in 2019. Betty later married Wayne Phenix, he preceded her in death in 2006. Surviving Betty are children; Peggy (Randy) Cherpes of Ionia, James (Sheri) Goodman of Flint and Dennis (Bobbyjo) Goodman of Alabama. life’s greatest resource: HUMAN LIFE. Michigan also needs to stand against the violent threat of “Jane’s Revenge”, and celebrate women’s abilities to have LIFE – for themselves and their babies. Thirty years ago, I was trained to be a lay counselor for a crisis pregnancy center. My goal was to help save babies, and try to make a small dent in the multi-billion dollar, life-ending abortion industry. Today, I am the volunteer Executive Director of a Crisis Pregnancy Center, and I am elated that we are finally at the point where we can preserve and defend life as a state. Michigan will now have the opportunity and responsibility to stand up for LIFE again, instead of funding an industry that only provides plans toward death, deception, and theft of our future generation. So, if we are honest as individuals and as a culture, would we say that every life HAS VALUE, and that EVERY LIFE is worth saving? Is it appropriate for us to say that as a government, as a society, as individuals we have made a big mistake by allowing the abortion industry to make billions of dollars from lying to women, placing their lives at great risk (cancer, infertility, mental and emotional health, and death), and killing over 60 million babies? Isn’t it time to admit we were wrong, forgive ourselves and each other, and receive forgiveness from God Himself? Isn’t it time to reject the business of abortion and accept our opportunities and responsibilities to raise the next generation toward its fullest potential? __________________________ Every time I speak or share on the topic of abortion, I have to give credence to the great guilt many women (and men) feel after having abortions. Everyone has sinned, and we all have regrets – some really big and some small – but we ALL wish we could do some things over again. No sin or regret is unforgivable. The saving forgiveness offered by Jesus Christ is truly enough to cover all our regret and shame. It is enough to make up for every abortion and every horrible decision we’ve made. Who decides the value of life? Over the past couple years with the controversial Covid culture, we have heard so many statements about how valuable life is and how careful we must be about preserving life. We were given new protocols regarding health. We were reminded to show compassion to everyone who might be at risk, and we were told to recognize and thank the healthcare heroes that were saving lives while risking theirs. We were told to lockdown and isolate to save lives. Life, Risk, Care, Health, Compassion, Shutdowns, Heroism, Safety, and Saving lives all became the buzz words of the day. This all took place while encouraging abortions that made several groups extremely wealthy. Planned Parenthood, a multi-billion dollar corporation, was open for business as usual during the Covid shutdown. The dichotomy was that in one building medical staff was trying to preserve life, and in the next building medical staff was profiting from ending life. How did we manage these opposing “values” in the same place, same brain, same conversation, and same society? I also don’t understand the supposed “empowering” messages women hear so often from abortion advocates: you CAN’T AFFORD a baby, you AREN’T CAPABLE of having a baby, you AREN’T SMART enough or STRONG enough or PREPARED enough to bring a human life into the world. If the abortionists are always trying to “empower” women, then why don’t they use words of possibility, capability, hope, and ‘can-do’ themes? This hypocrisy is extremely disturbing. Pro-abortionist group “Jane’s Revenge” has called for great violence against pregnancy centers across the nation, in anticipation of the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of the 1973 abortion decision. In contrast, pregnancy centers are working hard to save moms and babies, with love, nurture, generosity, and kindness. Common sense would suggest that this prolife decision by the highest court in our land should be celebrated with great joy and thankfulness, not violence and hatred. When this Supreme Court decision becomes official, Michigan will regain its own voice – to preserve and defend life in the womb. We will be able to continue assisting moms (and dads) to do all they CAN to be the life-givers they CAN BE. They will be ABLE to support

To qualify, a household annual income cannot exceed $40,000. The applicants(s) must also be (1) 62 years of age or older, including the unmarried surviving spouse of a person who was 62 years or older at the time of death, (2) Paraplegic, Hemiplegic, or Quadriplegic (3) Eligible Service person, Eligible Veteran, Eligible Widow or Widower (4) Blind Person (5) Totally and Permanently Disabled Those that farm agricultural real property may also qualify if the gross receipts of agricultural or horticultural operations in the previous year (or the average gross receipts for such operations in the previous three years) are not less than the household income for the preceding calendar year or the combined household incomes in the previous year of the individual members of a limited liability company that owns the agricultural real property. Deferments can only be filed and dated from 7-1-22 thru 9-15-22. Deferments must be filed annually. Postmarks will not be accepted. Defers the due date of the SUMMER taxes without penalty or interest charges until February 15. (Must be received by February 14).
