† DENIKE-HAGER
Debby Ann Denike-Hager passed June 6, 2024, at her Morrison Lake home in Ionia County, MI. She succumbed to Pulmonary Fibrosis, having been diagnosed 7 years earlier.
Debra Ann Denike was born to Thomas Pake Denike and Eunice (Evens) Denike August 9, 1948, in Cadillac MI.
She was preceded in death by Sister Leta Denike, Brother Berton Denike, Brother-in-law David Hager, Nephews Matt and Brad Denike.
She is survived by Husband Stephen (Steve) R. Hager, Daughter Josie (Tracy) Pelmear, Stepson Jeff (Willis) Atkinson, Stepdaughter Cheri Hager-Miller, Brother William (Jennie) Denike, Sisters Sharon (Fred) Sprague and Becky Martinez, Brother-in-law Lance (Julie) Hager, Sisters- in-law Amy Hager and Peggy (Berton) Denike, Son-in-law Tracy Pelmear and Grandsons, Troy and Nick Pelmear, Granddaughter Auti Miller, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Debby was raised on the Denike Farm in Boon, MI and began working in her young years on the farm and other work such as picking Cherries in the Traverse City area. In later years she enjoyed other work around Cadillac including Four Winns Boat Co., Kyser of Cadillac, managing offices for the Michigan Dept. of Mental Health, and later as partner with Steve in their Manufacturers Representative Agency.
Debby married Steve Dec. 2, 1990, at the Cloisters, Paradise Island, Bahamas. They resided on lakes in Ionia County, settling her last 32 years on Morrison Lake. In season, she loved being on the water in her float chair or on the pontoon with her kids, grandsons, friends, family or just with Steve cruising and reading at anchor.
During winters, she and Steve escaped to Cocoa Beach (home away) and the Keys. She enjoyed travel for work and pleasure around North America, Caribbean and Mediterranean Cruises and Destination Islands. The Islands of Antigua and Maui, being her two favorites. International trips were primarily Mediterranean Cruises, on which overtime weeks were spent in Italy, her favorite European Destination.
Debby was an excellent meal designer and loved cooking for Steve, family and friends. She never missed a birthday, anniversary, or holiday. She sent cards to her family and friends for all occasions. She loved tending her vegetable gardens each season. In later years tending the landscape and deck flowers became a favorite pastime, along with deck-time, reading and visiting with family and friends. She was a sweet, loving, wonderful person to all who had the fortune to know her.
A memorial service will be 11:00 am, Friday, August 2, 2024 at Pathway A Wesleyan Church in Saranac with Pastor Mark Lipscomb officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church.

SLOWINS
Grayden D. Slowins, was born January 20, 1932, in a farm house on Hastings Road at Grand River Avenue, in Boston Township, Ionia County, MI, died June 18, 2024, in Grand Rapids, MI, while a resident of Clark Retirement Community. The son of Donald Frederick Slowins and Crystal Lovina Brake Slowins, they lived on two more farms to the east along Grand River Avenue, before the family bought the fourth farm at the edge of the Village (later City) of Portland, in 1937. He started school there and graduated from Portland High School in1950, and Ferris Institute (now Ferris State University) in 1954. He was married June 25, 1954, to Ann Lois Lakin, born October 22, 1932, who died March 8, 2018, after almost 64 years of marriage. He was inducted into the U.S. Army October 19, 1954, near the end of the Korean Conflict, serving in the Medics, mostly Medical Supply, breveted as Supply Sergeant, for two years followed by one year in the Army Reserves in the 454th M.A.S.H. (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), in Grand Rapids, MI, with two weeks summer camp at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Denver, CO. Grayden and Ann bought a farm in Sebewa Township, Ionia County, and lived there 54 years. He was a shepherd, from age 3 weeks to 70 years, raising Purebred Dorsets, and a member of the Dorset Breeders and Michigan Sheep Breeders Associations. He was a Sebewa Township official for 43 years: Justice- of-the-Peace 51⁄2 years, Clerk 32 years, Cemetery Sexton 28 years of the time as Clerk, and finally Trustee 5 1⁄2 years. He was a founding member of the Ionia County Township Officers Association; 17 years Director, one year President, of Michigan Townships Association; 8 years Delegate to the National Association of Towns and Townships in Washington, DC. Grayden was a Genealogist, Historian, Writer and Editor of “The Sebewa Recollector,” “Schnabel Family History,” “Brake-Cosens Family History,” and the “Wenger-Nogle Family History.” He was a Pharmacist, serving 32 years, beginning as an apprentice, age 16 - 48, in Portland, Lake Odessa, and Nashville. Grayden and Ann traveled all over America and Canada in their pickup camper and motor home, and in England, Holland, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, France, New Zealand, and Australia. They spent one winter in Deming, NM, six winters in Starke, FL, and retired to Clark Retirement Community, Grand Rapids, January 2011. Grayden is survived by four children: Joseph G. Slowins of Ann Arbor, MI; Karen K. Laurel of Holly Hill, FL, mother of their only grandchild, Philip Pappas of Florida; Daniel F. Slowins (Peggy) of Walled Lake, MI; and Kirsten B. Slowins (Clint Galloway) of Orange Township, Ionia County, MI. He is also survived by two sisters: Sandra (late Jim) Miller of Lowell, MI, and Donna (late Jim) Eder of Chelsea, MI; one sister-in-law: Phyllis Boyer (late Jim) of Boise, ID; Sandra’s children: Carolyn Miller (Darryl Sprague) of Norton Shores, MI, and David Miller (Melissa) of Lyons, MI; Phyllis’ children: Debora Root (Barry) of Dallas, OR, Kathleen Jacobi (Fred) of Boise, ID, and Susan Lawmaster (Paul) Mechanicsville, VA; and their children and grandchildren.
Preceding Grayden in death are his wife, Ann; daughter-in-law, Jody; and three brothers-in-law, Jim Boyer, Jim Eder, and Jim Miller.
A service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 29, at Clark Chapel, 1551 Martin Luther King (formally Franklin Street SE), Grand Rapids with a reception following in the B.K. Room at the Clark Retirement Community.

† UNDERWOOD Mezella Mae Underwood, age 98, of Ionia, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. She was born on October 25, 1925. She was the daughter of Floyd and Flossie Ingraham of Portland. She graduated Portland High School. Mezella married Floyd Underwood June 9, 1946. The couple had 5 children, John Underwood, deceased, Wanda Minnis (Max), Connie Pritchard (Clyde), Leo Underwood and Teresa Seiler (Scott).
She has many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren,; several nieces and nephews, and she considered Sandy Hair one of her daughters. She loved quilting and reading and watching birds. She liked flowers, and yellow was her favorite color. The family would like to thank the Laurels of Carson City for the excellent care given to her.

† WILLISON Donald Elwin Willison age 95 of Saranac passed away June 18, 2024. He was born February 25, 1929, in Delton, Michigan, the son of Walter and Helen (Karrar) Willison. Don married Lois C. Stuart June 19, 1953, together raising 6 children. He worked at Superior Furniture before entering the Army in November of 1950, and was discharged in October 1952. After returning from the service, he went to work for Corduroy Rubber Company, where he worked for 37 years before retiring.
Don accepted the Lord as his Savior in 1948 and would attend Clarksville Bible Church for many years, and later attended South Boston Bible Church, where he was active in many positions, lastly as greeter emeritus. He loved people and visiting with them. He loved to bowl, and especially enjoyed mowing his lawn. Don lived at the corner of Gould Road and Grand River for many years.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 71 years Lois C. Willison of Saranac. Children: Steven (Cathy) Willison of Ortonville, Alan (Sandy) Willison of Saranac, Lugene (Bill) Mosey of Clarksville, Lorraine Willison of Bloomingdale, Kevin (Linda) Willison of Clarksville, and Peggy Willison of Caledonia. Grandchildren: Billie Jo (Jim) Snead, Bobbie Jo (Randy) Wickwire, Kyle Aspinall, Stuart (Bethany) Aspinall, Jennifer (Chris) Gerard, Michael (Laycee) Willison, Becca (Bill) Kelly, Alec (Nicole) Willison. † MOURER Allen (Allie) Robert Mourer, age 96, of Lyons, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at home. Allen was born on March 3, 1928, the son of Dewey Mourer and Margaret (Allen) Mourer.
Allen loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed race walking, was an avid golfer, enjoyed wine making and painting with his daughter. He loved having a cigar and a drink with his son. He made the best sauerkraut and donated blood frequently. Allen served with the US Army, study at MSU and retired from GM after 38 years. He is survived by his sister Arline Bennett and son, Mike (Vicki) Mourer of Florida; daughters, Kendra (Bill) Jones of New Mexico and Melody Mourer of Lyons, MI.; grandchildren, Joshua (Lori) Mourer, Jessica (Jim) Haremza, Isaac (Kim) Jones and Sam Jones; great grandchildren, Bailey, Lilly, Trajan, Maggie, Hadyn and Genna; and great-great grandchildren, Sylas and Trinity, and many loved nieces and nephews.

All township treasurers in Ionia County are currently accepting applications for summer 2024 tax deferments (deferments are not exemptions). To qualify, a household annual income cannot exceed $40,000. The applicants(s) must also be
(1) 62 years of age or older, including the unmarried surviving spouse of a person who was 62 years or older at the time of death,
(2) Paraplegic, Hemiplegic, or Quadriplegic
(3) Eligible Service person, Eligible Veteran, Eligible Widow or Widower
(4) Blind Person
(5) Totally and Permanently Disabled
Those that farm agricultural real property may also qualify if the gross receipts of agricultural or horticultural operations in the previous year (or the average gross receipts for such operations in the previous three years) are not less than the household income for the preceding calendar year or the combined household incomes in the previous year of the individual members of a limited liability company that owns the agricultural real property.
Deferments can only be filed and dated from 7-1-24 thru 9-15-24. Deferments must be filed annually. Postmarks will not be accepted.
