Portland Library Lines
This year summer reading at the library will be more important than ever. With kids distance learning since March, preventing the summer slide into the next school year is our goal. So come and “Imagine Your Story” at the Portland District Library with this year’s summer reading program. Our program will look a bit different this year, but we hope that everyone in your family will have something to enjoy. The youth department is bringing back a reading program, level prizes and grand prize packs for ages 0-5 (The Littles), 6-12 (The Middles), and 13-18 (The Teens). Adults will be entered to win one of many grand prizes, along with earning a prize for filling out your first punch card. Along with traditional paper logs and punch cards to track reading, our patrons will have the opportunity to use Beanstack, a digital reading tracker. Programming is going virtual this summer, so we are going to be launching a Youtube channel with all sorts of content available. A few programs that are already in the works include Busy Bees and Book Cubs Story Time and our ever popular STEM Club! Stay tuned for more information and follow us on Facebook to get instant updates about our reading program and how to have fun at the Portland District Library this summer!

Rep. Calley announces plan to give local schools more flexibility when learning resumes this fall ‘Return to Learn’ plan includes distance learning options, safety measures
State Rep. Julie Calley today announced details of the Michigan Legislature’s plan to ensure the safety of Michigan students as learning resumes in the fall. The Return to Learn plan, unveiled this morning during a Capitol press conference, requires local school districts and health departments to work together to develop health and safety standards best for their individual communities. “Instead of politicians mak-
ing sweeping decisions about what learning will look like in every school across our state, this plan empowers local health experts and educators to make decisions that make sense for families in their area,” said Calley, of Portland. “It also provides the resources schools need to make adjustments for remote learning and increased safety measure for in-person learning.” Calley said schools would have the flexibility to begin
instruction as quickly and safely as possible. Under the plan, school districts could start whenever is best for them without obtaining a waiver to bypass Michigan’s Labor Day start requirement. The Return to Learn plan also: Provides an $800 per pupil payment to K-12 schools to implement a robust distance learning plan and health and safety measures to return students safely to the classroom.

Tips to Safely Combat Home Bug Invasions (StatePoint) Thanks to an unusually warm, wet winter, experts predict that Americans will face an extra buggy summer. According to the bi-annual Bug Barometer, a seasonal projection from the National Pest Management Association, conditions are ripe for pesky pests of all stripes to be out in full force. And more bugs outside will likely mean more bugs trying to enter your house. “Expect pest populations to rise significantly as spring showers and summer sun make the perfect conditions for these vectors to flourish,” says entomologist, Gabriela Nine. “People should take the necessary precautions to prepare for approaching pests. These pests, such as roaches and ants, are knowledgeable at finding both food and shelter in our homes this time of year, habitually squeezing through the tiniest of spaces or walking through the front door to enjoy all our homes have to offer.” To combat the spike in ants, cockroaches, termites and other pests, and ensure they don't encroach on your home turf, consider the following tips: • MIND MOISTURE. Survey your home and yard and take steps to manage any locations where there is moisture build-up on surfaces or standing water,

which can invite mosquitoes and other bugs to breed on your property. • FEED YOURSELF -- NOT PESTS. Be sure to seal containers securely and store them properly in the fridge and cabinets. Sweep up the kitchen on a daily basis and wipe down tables and counters after preparing and eating meals to eliminate spills and crumbs. • SPRAY WITH CONFIDENCE. Over 90 percent of people are concerned about having bugs in their home, according to a survey conducted by Zevo. At the same time, almost as many -- 87 percent -- are concerned about the ingredients in traditional bug killer sprays for use in the home. The good news? There are effective ways to kill bugs using friendly ingredients. For

example, Zevo Instant Action Bug Killer Sprays which work on a broad range of household insects, including ants, roaches, flies, fruit flies, gnats and spiders, are comprised of essential oils that target nerve receptors vital to insects, not people or pets. Made without harsh chemicals, Zevo sprays are deadly to bugs and safe for use around people and pets when used as directed, making them a household essential, particularly in the warmer months. For more information, visit www.zevoinsect.com. • DEFEND ENTRY POINTS. Keep doors, windows and the garage -- the typical entry points for bugs -- closed as much as possible. You can also take additional defensive action in areas that get high bug traffic with Zevo Flying Insect Traps, which plug into outlets and use multi-spectrum light technology and a body heat attractant to lure in flying bugs for round-the-clock protection. Insects are not only icky, they can pose threats to people and property. But there is no need to bug out. With a few preventive measures and the means to stop bugs in their tracks -- or flight path -- you can keep your home safer and more comfortable this season.

Rep. Calley calls to end governor’s dangerous COVID-19 nursing home policy Reckless policy endangers lives of state’s most vulnerable residents
State Rep. Julie Calley stood up on behalf of the many vulnerable people in Michigan nursing homes whose lives have been endangered because of a COVID-19 policy put in place by the governor. Calley, of Portland, helped sponsor a resolution approved by the Michigan House calling to end Gov. Whitmer’s policy of placing COVID-19 patients into long-term care facilities. “Fortunately, our local nursing homes were prepared to isolate incoming patients and protect their residents. Many facilities throughout the state were not, but they were required to accept COVD-19 patients regardless of their level of preparedness,” said Calley.

“Putting contagious patients under the same roof as our most vulnerable residents – many of whom have compromised immune systems – was a recipe for disaster,” she continued. “I can’t help but wonder how many people lost a loved one because of this dangerous policy, especially when alternatives were available, such as the field hospitals in Novi and Detroit. Why the governor continues to implement it is beyond comprehension.” Senior citizens, especially those in nursing homes, are particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. Recent reports indicate roughly 34 percent of Michigan’s COVID-19 deaths – more than 1,900 people – have been nursing home residents.
Calley has joined legislators from both sides of the aisle in repeatedly calling on the administration to release more information related to the nursing home policy, which the governor has acknowledged is flawed. Other states that had implemented the same strategy, such as New York, have since reversed course – but Michigan’s policy remains in place under the governor’s orders. “Michigan families deserve sensible policies that keep our seniors safe – and the governor’s plan clearly doesn’t meet that standard,” Calley said. “Families whose elderly loved ones died alone and afraid in our nursing homes deserve answers.”

Rep. Calley: New law allows communities to more efficiently count absentee ballots Governor signs Calley’s plan to help clerks process influx of mail-in ballots
State Rep. Julie Calley’s plan giving local communities a new option to streamline the processing of absentee ballots has been signed into law. Calley, of Portland, said city and township clerks throughout Michigan are expecting a significant increase in the number of absentee ballots they receive following the addition of no-reason absentee voting, which was included in the reforms approved by voters through Proposal 3 of 2018, as well as coronavirus concerns. As a result, many clerks are concerned local election workers will not be able to process absent voter ballots in a timely manner. “We’re working on several reforms to help our local clerks address the increase in absentee ballots while still maintaining the integrity of our elections,” said Calley, who chairs the House Elections and Ethics Committee. “This plan gives communities a new option to streamline the process.” Absentee ballots can be processed in one of two ways – at each precinct or in an absent voter counting board. When they are processed in the precinct, election workers typically
feed absentee ballots into the voting machines during lulls or after polls close. By contrast, AV counting boards focus solely on processing absentee ballots all day long. While AV counting boards were previously allowed, communities were only allowed to complete the process on their own. The new law spearheaded by Calley allows local governments to team up with other nearby communities or the county to establish an AV counting board. “This will give small communities – which may not have the workers or equipment needed to have their own AV counting board – the opportunity to pool their resources with a local jurisdiction, if they so choose,” Calley said. Calley noted that workers on AV counting boards must be properly trained and are required to sign an oath not to reveal vote tallies until after polls close. Additionally, counting boards must have election inspectors representing both parties, just as polling places do. House Bill 5141 is now Public Act 95 of 2020.

Improve comfort when dining outdoors
adjusted to guard against the sun as it moves across the sky.
DRESS UP SEATING
Just because furniture is made for outside doesn’t mean it has to be uncomfortable. Many companies now produce very durable and attractive outdoor furniture. Weather-resistant fabrics mean rain or sunlight will not age items too quickly.
Warm weather entices people to enjoy long hours outside basking in the sun or relaxing on balmy evenings. Many of the activities people once reserved for indoors when temperatures were chilly, including dining, are moved outside as the weather warms. Even though outdoor dining can be quite enjoyable, certain factors need to be considered to ensure that each experience is as pleasurable as possible. This means focusing on comfort whenever meals are taken out-of-doors.

Invest in citronella candles, which can be placed around the patio to repel flying bugs. Clean up crumbs and spills promptly. Bees and wasps can be lured away with sweet traps placed around the perimeter of the property.

REUSABLE PLACE SETTINGS
If you frequently dine outdoors, you may want to dine in style. Instead of disposable paper or plastic place settings, invest in colorful, durable, reusable plastic dishes, glasses and flatware, which will not break if dropped and can hold up to a dishwasher when it is time to clean up. Create the right ambiance Invest in outdoor lighting, candles and hidden speakers to pipe in music and create ambiance. Install privacy screens and foliage to establish a nice nook for outdoor dining. Outdoor dining areas can be improved with some easy modifications to existing spaces.

Third Angel - The Mark
The third angel states with a LOUD voice, “If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God ... And they have NO REST day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receives the mark of his name.” (Revelation 14:9-11) To simply explain this, let’s focus on who does NOT receive the mark of the beast and the plagues of God. Revelation 14:12 -“Here is the patience of the saints, here are they that keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus.” So the ones who don’t get the mark or plagues are faithful to Jesus by keeping His commandments. Does God have a SEAL, a SIGN, or a MARK? Yes, Isaiah 8:16 states, “SEAL the LAW among my disciples.” A seal has three parts: Name, title, and territory. As we look in the law of the Ten Commandments, we find only one commandment that has God’s name, title, and territory in it: the Sabbath commandment, which begins with Remember -don’t forget. Name -The Lord thy God. Title-Creator, Maker, Territory- heavens, earth, sea and all that is in them. In Daniel 7:25 we see the antichrist power would “THINK to CHANGE times and LAWS.” What power would ever think that they could change GOD’s law- especially the SIGN or SEAL of Creation and Sanctification? In my 1965 Catechism Book it states, “Question: Which Day is the Sabbath day? Answer : Saturday is the Sabbath day. Question: Why do we attend church on Sunday? Answer: Because the church using the power of binding and loosing given to Peter, CHANGED the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.” The Church says that the change is a MARK of her ecclesiastical authority in religious matters. So the mark of the beast is not a number, a computer chip, etc. It has to do with the mindthe forehead. Who or what we worship. Cain and Abel both worshipped God. Both knew God. One did it God’s way, the other his own way. One accepted. One rejected. HOW we worship is important. What about six hundred sixty six? It is NOT the mark. It is the NUMBER of his name. The number is just one of the ten identifying clues as to who this is . Vicarius Filii Dei was on the Pope’s miter for centuries, but has been taken off The name was used for the Pope by Malachi Martin, a Jesuit Priest, who wrote, “The Keys of This Blood.” on pages 114, 122. In Roman Numerals :VICARIUS FILII DEI - V=5, I=1, C=100, A= 0, R = 0, I =1, U=5, S = 0, F = 0, I=1, L=50, I=l, I=1 D=500, E = 0, I=1, = 666. Another name in Latin = DUX CLERI = Captain of the Clergy. D=500, U=5, X=10, C=100, L=50, E = 0, R = 0 I=1 = 666. Another name in Latin -LUDOVICUS-Chief Vicar. L=50, U=5, D=500, 0 = 0, V=5, I=1, C=100, U=5, S = 0 = 666. Three names in Hebrew and three names in Greek come up with the same results. What man or church can change God’s law? Roger Williams (First Baptist Pastor in America) stated of the Pope, “The pretended vicar of Christ on earth, who sits as God over the temple of God, exalting himself not only above all that is called God, but over the souls and consciences of all his vassals ... thinking to change times and laws,; but he is the son of perdition.” The three angel’s messages are to be given to the world before Jesus returns. It is a message that calls the world to preparation and restoration to the truth of God’s Word and allegiance to His law and faith in Jesus. It is a call to repentance. It is the Elijah message that warns all, but gives hope to all as well. The first angel calls us to be restored by the indwelling Spirit which leads us to repentance and obedience. The second and third angels’ messages are a warning against being led astray by those who claim to be the Gateway to God, but are causing spiritual confusion that leads not to salvation, but to destruction. “Blessed are they that read, they that hear the words ohhis prophecy, and keep those things that are written therein: for the time is at hand.” (Revelation 1:3) God’s blessings, guidance, and safety.

State Rep. Julie Calley, of Portland, today welcomed state Unemployment Insurance Agency Director Steve Gray to a hearing of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic, while calling into question the agency’s communication and strategy as Michigan residents remain without needed unemployment benefits. “If I was to relay the voices of people I’ve been hearing from who are still without needed benefits, I would be breaking committee decorum with the language I’d be using,” Calley said during the hearing. “People are furious, frantic and frustrated. Their attempts to contact the UIA mostly go unanswered; they are not getting sufficient communication from the agency. They are not receiving timelines on when resources may be available to them that will help resolve their claim. This is basic customer service, and the agency is failing.” Gray was last before the select committee on May 13, when he disclosed that 134,000 people had not received any payments for their claims. Last week, UIA announced that number was sitting at 137,000, taking into account claims that had been fulfilled since the last reported number as well as new claims that entered the system. Updated information from the agency revealed the total number of unemployment claims statewide since midMarch has surpassed 2.3 million. The agency has indicated a major issue that has arisen in fulfilling claims – including ones that have been pending for over two months in some cases – has been an
abundance of caution regarding fraud. This includes overpayments, which allow a claimant to continue to draw benefits despite no longer being eligible for them, or receive more than what they are owed. Calley expressed concern that the fallout from these occurrences would strain the state’s unemployment trust fund and ultimately be shouldered by job providers through increased taxes. “We must ensure job providers throughout Michigan who have already been impacted severely by COVID-19 are not on the hook when these overpayments – whether by accident or through intentional fraudulent activity – are not able to be re-collected,” Calley said. Calley also pressed the agency on options for those with unsettled claims who do not have access to a computer. The agency has launched a portal to connect with constituents who have shared their experiences with legislators, but the second-term lawmaker said that feature isn’t applicable for those without computers or with limited internet access in rural areas. “The agency is not opening regional branches, won’t commit to a time when those branches will open and has no viable alternative for people who are calling them hundreds of times per day on the phone,” Calley said. “Just this week, the UIA announced a goal of July 4 for all unpaid claims filed before May 1 to receive a determination. Why is it taking over two months to reach an outcome? Timelines this long don’t work for people who are relying on these payments to pay bills and support their families.”
