In October, Addison Elliott and Addison Dahms attended the Mission and Impact Conference to strengthen their leadership skills and discuss their positive role in agriculture. Kennedy Prins and Chloe Simpson volunteered at Dairy Days in Grand Rapids. October ended with a trip to the National FFA Convention. At convention, Emily Mutschler receiving the National FFA Degree – the highest FFA achievement. In November, students finished their applications for $1000 FFA Grants to start a Supervised Agricultural Experience. Kennedy Prins received a grant to milk goats and Addison Dahms will use her grant to design custom livestock tags.
Hopkins presented a demonstration on tanning animal hides, Chloe Simpson and Hayleigh Walkington competed in Creed Speaking, and Addison Dahms won District - Jr. High Public Speaking. Addison advanced to the Regional Level and received a silver. In March, students traveled to the State Convention to learn from state leadership contests, attend a National FFA Officer workshop and to watch a convention session. At Convention, Emma Field received the State FFA Degree. In the spring, members played bingo at the school carnival, made Mother’s Day gifts with the elementary students, attended regional camp and participated in a livestock judging contest.
Members also competed in the FFA Meat Rabbit Contest. Addison Dahms won the Jr. High Contest with Kennedy Prins and Chloe Simpson finishing second and third. Hayleigh Walkington won the Purchased - Jr. High Contest. Currently, FFA members are preparing to compete in the State FFA Livestock Judging contest and to show at the Ionia Free Fair. Members are also maintaining the Duane Patrick memorial garden at the Jr/Sr High.

† BRIGGS Roberta Jean Briggs, 78, of Ionia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on June 15, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on September 20, 1943, the daughter of Edward and Viola (Lietzke) Judson. Roberta was a former coach of the Ionia High School Bowling team and she was a proud member of the Ionia Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame. She worked for Aetna Life and Casualty for more than 30 years and was a former SR Regeant, Ionia Moose Lodge. In her free time, Roberta was an avid golfer and she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, who meant the absolute world to her. Roberta was married to the love of her life, Russell Briggs for 55 wonderful years. She is survived by her loving husband, Russell D. Briggs; daughter, Robin Renee Briggs; step-daughters, Lisa (Richard) Ostrander, LeAnne Briggs, and Laurie (John) Brodberg; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth (Charles) Kennedy; sisters-in-law, Patty Judson and Jackie Judson; and many special nieces. Also surviving are her very special friends, who turned into family, Ronald (Sallie) Possehn and special care takers, Megan McGowan, JoAnne Hoffman and Dee Thayer. Preceding Roberta in death are her parents and brothers, Ron Judson and Richard Judson. The Funeral Service will be officiated by Mr. Peter McGowan at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia. Interment will follow at Easton Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Family and friends will never forget what a kind and sweet person she was. In 2000, she married Dennis Decker and they had 22 years of love and adventure. Dennis will never forget what a perfect wife she was to him. She leaves behind her husband Dennis, mother Carolyn Euler, children Tracy, Michelle and Kimberly, 9 grandchildren, sister Nancy Walters and mother-in-law Virginia Decker along with many other loved family and friends. Preceding her in death by her father George Euler, sister Linda Behe, brother in law Greg Walters, father-in-law Orville Decker. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022 from 11am until 1pm at Koops Funeral Chapel. Internment will take place in Lakeside Cemetery at later date. He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ellen Goodmiller, brother in-law Charles Listerman and several aunts and uncles. Michael is survived by his sisters Terri Listerman, and Ellen (Ronald) Bowling. He is also survived by his nieces Amanda (Wayne) Willaman, Erin (Jeff) Melnick, and his nephew Logan (Sarah) Bowling along with great nieces and nephew Macy, Natalie Willaman and Jaxon, Elise Melnick. Mike graduated from Ionia High School in 1976 and took other vocational training over the course of his life. He later worked in the family business specializing in sales/retail, parts and service at Giants Enterprises in Ionia, Michigan. Prior to retiring Mike finished his career at Grand Pointe Marina in Lansing, Michigan. Mike enjoyed traveling and took many trips over the years. He enjoyed snowmobiling with family and friends in Michigan and Canada and he enjoyed traveling to many family reunions with relatives from Oklahoma, Tennessee and Kansas. Mike also greatly enjoyed a May 2022 sibling trip to Massachusetts that included visiting historical family homes, seeing the witches of Salem, visiting the beautiful coastline and beaches, shopping in antique shops and flea markets, eating fresh seafood, watching Harry Potter movies in the hotel, flying first class, and being driven around by his sisters. Over the years Mike enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. He liked collecting Gulf Oil memorabilia, attending Classic Car shows and events, and driving, tinkering with and showing his 1959 Thunderbird. Mike was also active in his community helping with the Boy Scouts and participating with Jaycees activities and projects. After Mike retired, he enjoyed spending time in his yard, mowing and doing yard projects as well as building model trucks and cars, taking drives, and going to the movies. Mike was a family man and a true friend to others. He loved to spend time with extended family at family reunions. He enjoyed many holiday celebrations with family especially with his great nieces and nephew. Mike also truly looked forward to visits and phone conversations with his special friends Colleen, Marilyn, and Paul. Mike will be forever remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends. A gathering to celebrate Mike’s life will take place on Sunday June 26, 2022 from 12pm - 3pm at Just Like Home, located at 330 Fourth street Ionia, Michigan 48846. A private burial with family is planned following the celebration. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to your favorite charity in memory of Mike Goodmiller.

† GROOM Robert “Bobby” Groom, age 40, of Sault Ste. Marie, formerly of Fenwick, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022. Bobby was always looking to help others. He did that first by serving 7 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and then as a Registered Nurse. Bobby enjoyed living in the Upper Peninsula and loved documenting all his adventures and excursions on his YouTube Channel: “Capp and Coastie Adventures”. Bobby will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. Surviving Bobby are his parents, Dan & Mary Groom of Ionia; daughter, Aubryana Wedge of Greenville; brother, Nick Groom (Jen Miller) of Sparta; several aunts and uncles; many cousins; and his beloved dog and best buddy, Capp. Bobby was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bird & Iris Groom and Lynn & Esther Rogers; and his uncle Bruce Groom. Rep. Calley’s plan to increase access to affordable child care heads to governor The Michigan Senate recently approved a bipartisan proposal Rep. Julie Calley helped sponsor to improve access to affordable child care in Michigan. Calley, of Portland, said the measures provide the flexibility needed to help providers start – and stay in – business while continuing to prioritize the safety of Michigan children. “For many families, finding a child care provider they can trust and afford is next to impossible. It’s a situation that often keeps parents from returning to the workplace,” Calley said. “The changes we’ve proposed will eliminate government red tape and create an atmosphere where child-care businesses can suc-
ceed and families have access to safe, reliable and affordable services.” State research has shown that 75 percent of children in Michigan live in areas with limited access to child care. In addition, 10 Michigan counties do not currently have licensed slots at centers that serve children younger than 30 months. A 2019 report by the National Center on Early Childhood Quality Assurance detailed the key factors that have led to the decreasing number of in-home providers across the country, finding an extensive number of regulations, start-up and operational expenses, and low compensation rates for provid-

The Value of a Father By Gina Johnsen Father’s Day is coming up, and it’s a great time to reevaluate our fathers’ roles in our lives, and the value that only they can bring to our culture. Every Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in churches, we hear sermons emphasizing the role, the responsibility, and the appreciation for our mothers and fathers. These are good messages that we need to hear even more than once a year. But, these are sometimes the most painful Sunday sermons for many people because of the lack of fathers (or mothers) and for those who had parents who just couldn’t figure out how to be there for them. One of the most significant crises in our nation, in our culture currently, is the breakdown of the family and the absence of fathers in the majority of our families today. Over 50% of children in America are born to single mothers, and many do not ever form relationships with their natural born fathers as a result. I am the Director of a Crisis Pregnancy Center, and we don’t see many of the fathers/boyfriends coming in for counseling or standing by their girlfriends who are pregnant. It’s lonely, scary, and a tough situation for most of these women. Single moms courageously do what is best in having the baby and allowing it to LIVE, but it is far from an ideal situation. As teen pregnancy rates have risen in our society over the past several decades, so has the incidence of childhood trauma, violence, rebellion, lack of respect for authority, hopelessness, depression, and suicide. The family unit truly is at risk in America, and although women step up to the role of Head of Household and take the responsibility to be breadwinner and mom and everything in between, we all know this is not the BEST we can do. All of these scenarios and statistics beg the question of the tremendous value a father brings to the family. And, it’s clear that no baby comes into this world as the result of ONE person, but always TWO: a man and a woman/a boy and a girl. So, it is automatically built in to the “science” of family to need both father and mother. By contrast, we also look at symbols of prosperity, success, peace, freedom, community service, courage and a thriving society: God the Father (who “disciplines His sons, the ones whom
He loves”), our Founding Fathers like George Washington who led us to freedom, Father Abraham of our Judeo-Christian roots, and Robert the Bruce (and Sir William Wallace) in the movie Braveheart. Wallace says to Robert, in one of the toughest times in Scottish history, “If you would just lead them (to freedom), they’d follow you…and so would I.” History and our current society all tell us that if men will lead, especially as fathers, the rest will follow. How we value and need the fathers to retain their leadership roles in the family. It is true that women have stepped up to take the demands and the stresses of the family, in order to hold it together. But, some forces (Hollywood, the media, voices of other societies and ideologies) have invaded our culture, demoralized men, and pushed them aside. Therefore, men have walked away from their natural roles as protector, provider, leader, and have left it up to the mothers alone. Our society is pleading that men would take courage and return to their natural roles and stand up for their families, their wives and their children. And, contrary to what we are “told”, this doesn’t make the women weaker or diminish them in any way; it actually makes them stronger, freeing them to reach their potential and be all they can be. When men take their proper roles in families, the mothers and the children thrive as well! My name is Gina Johnsen. I am running for State Representative. The purpose of this meeting is to answer questions township residents have about the Solar Ordinance and a proposed 100-megawatt solar project in the Township. Charles Gould, a representative from ITC Holdings, the owner of the high voltage lines where the electricity made connects to the power grid, and a representative from Invenergy, the company looking to build the solar project are scheduled to attend. The library is offering an all-ages Summer Reading Program which will run for 8 weeks until Sunday, August 7. Patrons will have the option of using PDL’s virtual reading tracker, Beanstack, or logging minutes using a traditional paper tracker. Adults will get a sweet treat for unlocking their first badge and then can enter to win one of our wonderful prize packs at the end of the summer.
