Margarete “Maggie” Selent Baeger

Beckhorn Maggie went to be with her Heavenly Father on May 20, 2021. Maggie was born in Lüneburg, Germany November 1, 1926 to Fredrick and Elizabeth (Shultz) Selent. Maggie was married to Otto Baeger which ended in divorce. She later married Robert Beckhorn in Ionia. She retired from Ionia County Memorial Hospital and later moved to Clearwater, Florida. She is survived by a daughter, Diane (Bob) Wheeler. Grandchildren: Brian Meyer, Amy Meyer, Tracey (Robert) Baeger, Kurt (Sarah) Baeger, Tina (Scott) Wittenbach, Richard (Shelly) Spaans, James (Amy) Wheeler, Nikolaus (Heather) Wheeler. Many great grandbabies. Son-in-law, Jim Cooper. Daughtersin-law, Shirlin Baeger, Marcia Meyer, Linda Meyer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Beckhorn. Daughters Monica Baeger and Brigitte “Gitty” Cooper; Sons Werner Meyer and Klaus Baeger. A Memorial will be at Muir Cemetery on June 25, 2021 at 1:00 p.m.

† MONTGOMERY Doris Elaine Montgomery, age 89, of Ionia, passed away on Friday,

June 11, 2021. She was born on May 15, 1932 in Ionia the daughter of Robert and Blanche (Rowland) McCord. Doris was a lifelong member of Easton United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, played the piano, was a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, word searches, reading, and tending to her garden and bird feeders. Her family was the most important thing to her, she loved family gatherings, and spoiling the grandchildren. After her children had left the house, she was a school aid at the Ionia Public Schools for several years. Doris was often called, “gorgeous”, by her husband, Bob and he preceded her in death in 2010. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Alice (Herbert) Corey and all of her beloved siblings. Surviving are her children, Mary Montgomery Colvin of Saranac, Donna (Dick) Nees of Jackson and David (Debra) Montgomery of Ionia; grandchildren, Nicholas Colvin, Sara (Will) Berti, Matthew (Katelyn) Nees, Joshua Montgomery, Melissa (Jason) Sisler, Robert (Maria) Montgomery II, Megan Corey; great-grandchildren, Brianna Ardis, Chloe Sisler, Izabella and Emileena Sisler, Braxton, Brighton, and Briley Montgomery, Natalie and Olivia Berti, Sherry, Joshua and Benson Montgomery; sisters-in-law, Beverly McCord, Joan Strickling and Toni Montgomery. The Memorial Service will be conducted by Pastor Donna Sperry at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Easton United Methodist Church, 4790 Potters Rd., Ionia. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A luncheon will follow the service and burial will take place in Easton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Easton United Methodist Church or to the Ionia Co. Commission on Aging in memory of Doris. Arrangements are with Lehman Funeral Homes. There will be visitation at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Saturday, June 26 from 3 to 6 P.M. (Please RSVP to june.truswell@gmail.com if planning to attend the memorial. A box lunch will be provided and we need to know how many to order.) Ed attended Wayne State University where he received his bachelor’s degree and MSU where he received his master’s in music. Ed was a teacher and principal at the Michigan Training Unit, DOC. Ed was a member of St. John the Apostle Episcopal Church. He volunteered at Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary. He had a black belt in Taekwondo, was a water ski nut, and an avid trumpet player. Ed loved NASCAR, especially Earnhardt Sr. And Jr. but was never a Busch fan. Ed was able to attend over 10 NASCAR tracks. Ed worked the pit gate for several years at I96 Speedway. Surviving is his wife, June Thomas-Truswell of Saranac. Sons; Edward “Ted” Truswell (Calla Fisher) of Saranac and Jonathan (Alexandra) Truswell of Wayland. Grandchildren; Maelynn and Topher Truswell. Sister Ellen (Tim) Morehouse. Three nieces and two nephews; special sister-in-law, Billie Thorington; niece Jennifer Parker, who both helped care for him during his illness; and special friends, Andy Salka, Dave Snyder, and Don Raybould. He was preceded in death by his parents. Upon his request cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions to Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary or St. John the Apostle Episcopal Church.

Rep. Calley, state leaders announce plan to improve access to child care in Michigan State Rep. Julie Calley this week helped announce a comprehensive plan aimed at improving access to high-quality, affordable child care for Michigan families. Calley, of Portland, joined state legislators, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and several child-care industry and regional business

leaders to unveil the bipartisan proposal. The legislation will continue to prioritize high-quality care for families to ensure children are safe, while also providing much-needed flexibility to better support providers who depend on adequate resources to deliver reliable, effective care.

“The lack of affordable childcare options is one of the biggest issues families struggle with, especially in rural communities,” Calley said. “In many cases, both parents want to work but it simply doesn’t make financial sense. Moms and dads sit around the kitchen table, crunch the numbers and realize it will cost more to send their kids to day care than they will bring home with an extra paycheck. Parents should be empowered with more options.” Calley said the number of in-home child-care providers across Michigan has dropped at an alarming rate over the last decade. A 2019 Public Sector Consultants study commissioned by the Michigan Department of Education found the number of family and group child care home providers declined as much as 38 percent in a seven-year span. Recent research has also shown that 75 percent of children in Michigan live in areas with limited access to child care. In

addition, 10 Michigan counties do not currently have licensed slots at centers that serve children younger than 30 months. The plan: Expands access to child care. A safe path for child-care providers would be established to allow location in multi-use buildings, helping provide service options closer to home or work for many Michigan families. Home-based providers with proven records of success would be able to care for additional children. An innovative contract model would improve access and appropriately address costs of infants and toddlers in areas that now don’t have enough providers to meet demand – so-called ‘child-care deserts.’ Provides better information for families. Access to health and safety records of providers would be allowed to be shared online. This measure, sponsored by Calley, would allow parents to research potential providers more thoroughly before selecting where to send their kids. Expands support for child-care providers. Child-care networks would be established to serve as ‘one-stop shops’ for child-care providers to access valuable business supports. Cracks down on bad actors. Child-care provider applicants
