James Lee “Jim” Clifford, age 48 of Belding, died Friday, June 3, 2022. He was born November 29, 1973, in Ionia, the son of Ron and Jean (Griffin) Clifford. Jim enjoyed a very successful career as a consultant and trainer for RJG, Inc. He loved his job and excelled at it. He liked to fish and had a passion for motorcycles, especially Harley Davidson’s, and currently owned three Harley’s. He was a kind, friendly man who always put the needs of others before his own. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. Jim is survived by his parents, Ron and Jean Clifford; brother, Rob (Brock Marshall) Clifford; uncles, Dan Clifford, Dennis Brown and Uncle Bill; aunts, Donna Purdy and June (Keith) Chambers; and many cousins, and friends. His best friends that were like brothers to him were Pat Edmonds, Ron Kelly, Garet Gillson, Shad Kline, and Jerry DeGraw. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, June 9, 2022, at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, with Pastor Paul Hulford officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service. Graveside services will immediately follow at Woodard Lake Cemetery. James Basil Kinney, 73, of Ionia, passed away at Country Living AFC in Portland, on Saturday, March 26, 2022. James was born on October 5, 1948, in Ionia, the son of James and Clara (Reed) Kinney. He graduated from Ionia High School with the Class of 1966, and then proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam war. He retired from General Motors, Fisher Body in Lansing after working there 30 years. James enjoyed many outdoor activities, including kayaking around the Great Lakes, canoeing, metal detecting, jogging, bicycling, rugged camping, and panning for gold out west. He was also a talented woodworker. James is loved and survived by his children, Matt (Rachel) Kinney of Portland, Oregon, Megan Barber of Holt and Corrine Barrett of Big Lake, Alaska his grandchildren, Darrell James, Jordan, and Jeremy, his brothers and sisters, Jane (Patrick) Hummel, Kitty (Tom) Lower, and Scott Shotwell all of Ionia, and Jeff (Becky) Shotwell of Sheridan. James was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Steven Kinney. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 1:00 PM, at Ashley Cemetery in Grattan Township, with Pastor Mike Simmons officiating. Following the graveside service there will be a luncheon at the Belding VFW, 148 N. Bridge Street. Funeral care has been entrusted to Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, in Belding. Memorials may be given to Ionia Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Recognizing New National Honor Society Members at SHS
Six students from Saranac High School were inducted as new members of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held at the school on April 26, 2022. Members were selected by the chapter’s Faculty Council for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Mr. Keith Houston, the guest speaker reminded members to listen more than speak, seek to improve themselves, but
to forgo the need for perfection. He also suggested that they try new things, avoid complaining and most importantly to be kind. The ceremony was filled with lovely music from Anna McPherson. Students inducted were: Nathan Day, Amelia Doll, Hunter Helminski, Rebecca Hopkins, Abigail Janson, and Kayla Sterzick The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest

The most memorable road trips are often the byproduct of ample planning. Careful examinations of maps months before a trip begins can help vacationers find the best sights to see and uncover must-visit restaurants. The average gas price in many parts of North America exceeded $5 U.S. dollars per gallon by early June, and economic forecasters predicted prices could climb even higher as June gives way to the summer travel season. High gas prices likely won’t compel most vacationers to cancel their travel plans this summer. And those who are staying the course can rest easy knowing there are plenty of ways for them to cut costs and still enjoy a memorable summer road trip in the months ahead. · Book a vehicle maintenance appointment. Prior to heading for parts unknown, visit your local auto body shop and have your car or truck serviced. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that regular engine tune-ups to ensure a vehicle is running efficiently increases fuel economy by an average of 4 percent. Schedule an oil change and tune-up shortly before your departure date so your car won’t be forced to work extra hard, and thus consume extra fuel, during your trip. · Reconsider your ride. Vacationers with more than one car to choose from may want to reconsider which car they drive on their road trip this summer. For example, families with one SUV and one sedan may save money by driving the sedan instead of the SUV, which is likely less fuel-efficient than the smaller vehicle. In addition, consider the type of fuel each
of your cars requires and let that inform your decision. For instance, certain vehicles require more expensive high-octane fuel. If you own a car that requires the more budget-friendly regular 87 octane fuel, take that one on the road with you this summer. · Look to save on lodging. Roadside motels have undergone something a rebirth in recent years. Many motels have been given full makeovers but remain budget-friendly lodging options for road trippers. Motels won’t offer all the amenities of five-star hotels, but they’re affordable places for vacationers to lay their heads for a night before traveling on to the next adventure the following morning. · Take your foot off the gas. Another way to conserve fuel during a summer road trip is to resist the temptation to drive too fast. Avoiding excessive speeds isn’t just safer; it’s also
