Rep. Calley announces summer reading contest for area kids State Rep. Julie Calley, of Portland, announced today she is teaming with several libraries in the district on a summer reading contest for children first through fifth grade in Barry and Ionia counties. Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can through August. Students or their parents should record the titles of completed books and the number of pages read on a bookmark provided to the libraries by Rep. Calley or downloaded and printed from her website at www.RepCalley.com. Readers must submit the bookmarks in the contest box at local libraries or mail them to Rep. Calley’s office by August 31 to be eligible to win. The winners, along with their family members, will be guests of Rep. Calley at the state Capitol to be a Legislator for the Day. “My goal is to support a lifelong love of reading,” Rep. Calley said. “Strong literacy skills are the foundation to a successful education.” Libraries taking part in the contest are: ·Clarksville Area Library, Clarksville ·Delton District Library,

† MOON

Margaret Hunter Moon: On March 24,1932 Bertha and Emmit Carigon welcomed Margaret, their first-born child. As time passed, they added four siblings to Margaret’s world. She was a loving big sister with motherly instincts to Dan, Marion, Don and Gary who have all proceeded her in death. The Carigon family raised their children with a strong work ethic-based on a self-sustaining farm life. Margaret always enjoyed her school days, graduating in 1950 from Lowell High School. It was around this time, a handsome, farm type boy caught her eye. Yes, Gordon Hunter entered her life. Head over heels they fell for each other and soon married. On to Gordon’s family farm they moved and began raising their four children, Sharon, Diane, Shelly & Casso. The daily, never ending chores of being a farm wife and

Mother filled her days, but still found time to enjoy gardening, canning, cooking and baking. Margaret possessed exceptional sewing skills. She spread her knowledge and know-how by being a 4-H sewing leader for the local girls of Berlin area. Many blue-ribbon winners at the Ionia Free Fair were under her tutelage. As time passed her children matured and the family’s needs evolved, so did Margaret’s. She found great joy and comfort with the Saranac Community Church. Her faith and her God would continue to strengthen each day until her last. While nearing forty years of marriage Margaret and Gordon learned that Gordon was terminally ill and would die soon. Margaret’s faith, family, and friends brought her through this devasting time. She continued her healing by venturing away from the farm house to a position at McCarty’s Communications. She found that keeping busy, meeting new people and becoming more involved with her church was the recipe for her eventual happiness. And in this recipe of happiness, Richard Moon became a key ingredienta husband. Dick was a widower with four children of his own. Margaret loved Dave, Mike, Ann and Pat as a Mom and they loved her in return. Margaret and Dick spent their days assisting with the Saranac Community Church Food Pantry, traveling and help-

“We know our producers must be specialists in many different fields in order to be successful, and that’s why we strive to provide the most relevant topics and foremost speakers at the Summer Round-Up.” The Round-Up begins Thursday, June 20th with a program for Young Cattlemen, followed by a meeting and reception at the historic Doherty Hotel. Education Series I will include a field day where participants will learn from the experts about proper fence construction, watering system design, rotational grazing strategies, cattle handling equipment and see a post peeling demonstration. The afternoon program will include lunch and will focus on dealing with predators that threaten cattle and the Michigan cattle industry. Barb Wilkinson, Sr. Executive Director of Governance & Leadership Development, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Blaine Bailer, an expert on predator control from Jay’s Sporting Goods will lead these sessions. “In addition to wildlife, predators might include things like regulations or lost markets. This session is an opportunity

for every cattle producer in Michigan to influence the direction of our association and the future of our industry,” Plank says. “We want a two-way discussion where participants are encouraged to share their thoughts.” A social hour and awards banquet will be held at the Doherty Hotel that evening. The evening program will include a performance by the outrageously funny pro-

fessional comedian Dwayne Gill. Participants can also win prizes and support the MCA Political Activity Fund through an auction and raffle following the banquet. Education Series II begins Saturday, June 22. It includes a tour of Gloryland Ranch and a presentation about forage management and grazing irrigated pastures. Series II also includes a tour of Wernette Cattle Company, where soil health management for optimum sustainability will be demonstrated. Leading the discussions will be Dr. Jason Rowntree, Associate Professor of Animal Science at Michigan State University. Series II concludes with lunch at Wernette Cattle Company. “The Michigan Cattlemen’s Summer Round-Up and Education Series not only provides producers with an opportunity to learn more about the most efficient and practical ways to run their businesses, it also is an excellent networking opportunity,” Plank says. “Attendees have the chance to speak with fellow producers and speakers about management practices that can benefit their own operations.” Plank says producers interested in attending the event should register on the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association website, www.micattlemen. org or contact the MCA office at 517-347-8117.

Public Health Advisory for the Grand River Residents, visitors advised to avoid body contact

On June 3rd, 2019 the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) sampled the Grand River for E. coli in Ionia County. Sampling was performed in Portland at Kent St. and in Saranac at Bridge St. The sampling was performed as part of an 8-week study of E. coli on the Grand River. The sample results revealed high levels of E. coli at both Ionia County locations. The geometric mean was 1257 E. coli/100 mL at the Saranac location and 1181 E. coli/100 mL at the Portland location. At this time the Ionia County Health Department is recom-

mending NO BODY CONTACT for the Grand River in Ionia County. Additional testing will be conducted by EGLE. The Ionia County Health Department will lift this Public Health Advisory when conditions warrant. Questions regarding the details of the sampling should be directed to EGLE at 517-342-4419 . Questions regarding the Public Health Advisory should be directed to the Ionia County Health Department. For more information on E. coli in surface water, visit www. mi.gov/deqecoli.
