LANSING, MI – A Nurse in Sparrow Hospital’s Neuro Trauma Intensive Care Unit who was instrumental in setting up a COVID-19 unit has been named the hospital’s Nurse of the Year. Laura Timm, BSN, RN, CCRN, volunteered to take care of COVID-19 patients from the start of the pandemic and is known as a team player and strong advocate for patient safety. Timm, who has worked in the Neuro Trauma ICU for nine years, “is a fantastic nurse with a big heart,” said one colleague, and is viewed as knowledgeable, approachable and a wonderful teacher for her fellow caregivers. Timm was honored during last week’s Nurses Week ceremonies. Artesia Vannote, BSN, RN-BC, of Sparrow Specialty Hospital, was named Preceptor of the Year. Sparrow’s Community Hospitals also presented Nurse of the Year honors. Sparrow Carson Hospital recognized Jessica Heleski, RN, as its Nurse of the Year. on Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) intervention and data collection. Her nomination noted that Heleski exemplifies what it is to deliver kind, compassionate care. With each interaction she has, people feel cared for, valued and welcome by her. “We are extremely honored to have the caliber of nursing excellence we have here at Sparrow Carson. The task of choosing just one nurse each year to be recognized is always difficult,” said Monte Malek, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, interim Chief Nursing Officer. During this unprecedented time, Sparrow Clinton Hospital chose not to give accolades to a single nurse, but to honor all 70 nurse caregivers as the 2020 Nurses of the Year. Their compassionate care for patients, their families, and the community as a whole reflects the true spirit of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. “The Coronavirus has changed our lives,” said Sparrow Clinton Hospital President Beth Daugherty, BSN, MPH, RN, CRRN. “The comfort and reassurance Sparrow Clinton nurses provide daily has a whole new meaning. Our healing touch has been redefined. Nurses have learned to smile with their eyes, hug without touching, and celebrate life from a distance.” At Sparrow Ionia Hospital, Emergency Department nurse Samantha Fletcher, BSN, RN, was selected as the 2020 Nurse of the Year. Fletcher – a caregiver at Sparrow Ionia since 2013 – was nominated by her peers and hailed as having “an exceptional understanding of the community around her” and a “beacon of knowledge.” “Sam has a unique way of finding the smallest light in a dark situation,” said one nomination form. “When the sickest of patients arrive, Sam is always the first one in the room.” Sparrow is extremely proud of its more than 1,600 nurses. As a designated Nurse Magnet Hospital, Sparrow Hospital is a recognized leader in Nursing excellence, innovative professional Nursing practices, and quality Patient care. The Nurse Magnet designation is the nation’s most prestigious honor for Nursing achievement and excellence. Considered the gold standard for nursing care in hospitals, Magnet status is held by only about 6 percent of American hospitals. Sparrow received redesignation in 2014 as a Nurse Magnet hospital, which is held by just 2 percent of hospitals.

Secretary of State branch offices to reopen June 1 by appointment only Updated renewal mailers will provide additional information on easiest means of conducting transactions Secretary of State branch offices will reopen June 1 by appointment only for essential transactions not available online in order to continue to balance the need to provide critical services and protect public health. “While the offices were closed to the public, we conducted more than 3,000 emergency appointments for essential workers and planned and implemented protocols so that we could reopen in a way that ensures the safety of employees and all Michiganders,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. “Customers can be confident they’ll be able to conduct their business with us safely and efficiently.” Beginning the week of June 1, all 131 branch offices in Michigan will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for appointment-only services for transactions including: •Driver licenses and state ID transactions that must be done in person •Title transfers •Operator, CDL, chauffeur, mechanic and motorcycle testing •Seasonal commercial vehicle renewal Branch staff will follow strict health and safety protocols, including wearing masks, standing six feet apart, using desk shields, and continuously disinfecting shared or common surfaces. Branch doors will be locked, and each branch will have a greeter to let customers with appointments in at scheduled appointment times. A copy of the department’s reopening preparedness plan can be found at https://www.michigan.gov/

documents/sos/MDOS_Preparedness_Plan_692017_7. pdf. Anyone scheduling an appointment or receiving an appointment reminder will also be instructed on how to safely attend their appointment by: •Arriving at the appointment alone •Wearing a mask or homemade face covering over their mouth and nose •Waiting in their vehicle or outside prior to the appointment

time and maintaining six feet of distance when announcing themselves and their appointment to staff at the doors •Following directions on where to stand during the transaction — only stepping forward toward the clerk when providing or retrieving documents •Cancelling their appointment if they develop symptoms of COVID-19 or come into contact with someone who has COVID-19 within 14 days of the appointment

•Adhering to CDC guidelines when in public In addition to preparing to reopen branches, the Michigan Department of State began sending updated renewal forms this week, color-coded based on the type of transaction needed and with streamlined information to explain how best to conduct the transaction. Renewal forms, which will be mailed in redesigned envelopes measuring 9.5 inches by 6 inches, come in six colors:

•Red: Vehicle registration •Blue: Driver’s license •Green: State identification card •Teal: Watercraft •Gray: Snowmobile •Purple: Special plate Instructions are provided at the bottom of each form to direct customers on options for renewing their credential, providing information on whether they can complete their transaction online, at a self-service station or by mail, or if they will need to schedule an appointment at

a branch office. A sample of the updated renewal forms can be found at https://www.michigan. gov/sos/0,4670,7-1271640_11777-530267--,00. html. To schedule an appointment visit Michigan.gov/SOS or call 888-SOS-MICH. Advance appointments can be made up to 180 days ahead of time. Same-day appointments become available 24 hours prior to the appointment time.

The Hour of His Judgment

The reason the first angel tells us to fear God and give glory to Him, and to worship Him that made heaven and the earth is because “The hour of His judgment IS or HAS come.” (Revelation 14:6, 7) There are a lot of people today who don’t believe that there is a judgment day for everyone: that because Jesus died on the cross, we don’t come into judgment. But 2 Corinthians 5:10 states, “For we must ALL appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that every one may receive things done in his body, according to that he has done, whether it be bad or good.” Psalm 9:7 states, “The Lord shall endure forever; for He has prepared His throne for judgment. And He shall judge the world in righteousness.” Acts 10:42 states, “God will judge the living and the dead.” Psalm 1:5 states, “The ungodly shall not stand in the judgment.” Hebrews 13:4 states, “Adulterers God will judge.” Hebrews 9:27 – “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Acts 17:31 states, “He has appointed a day in which He will judge the world.” That day according to Revelation 14:6,7 IS or HAS come. In vision, Daniel 7:10 prophesied of that day, “The court was seated, and the books were opened.” Ecclesiastes 12:13 tells us to fear God and keep His commandments. The reason Solomon gives is in the next verse, “For God will bring every work into judgment.” It is clear from the Scriptures that there is a judgment day. And Revelation tells us that when the three angels begin to sound, that day has come. Hebrews 8:1,2 states, “We have such a high priest ... a minister of the TRUE tabernacle, which the Lord pitched and not man.” Hebrews 9:23,24 shows us the earthly tabernacle was a copy of the one in heaven. The Most Holy Place is a court of law. In the Most Holy Place is the Ark. In the Ark was placed the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 5:21) That is the law that all mankind is judged by. God is the Judge (Psalm 80:1, 99:1) sitting between the Cherubim. Satan is the Prosecuting Attorney – Revelation 12:10 – “For the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accuses them before our God day and night.” The Defense Attorney – “We have an ADVOCATE with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (I John 2:1) Psalm 59:9 and 17 states, “’God is my defense.” The good news is that Jesus is not only our defense attorney, but God has given all judgment to Jesus. (John 5:22) So our defense attorney is also our judge. The jury of our peers is comprised of the twenty-four elders before the throne. (Revelation 19:2,3) – “For true and righteous are His judgments ... for He has judged the great prostitute ... and has avenged the blood of His servants at her hand.” Our court system uses twelve jurors. The witnesses are the angels who have recorded every word, action, and thought we have. In the earthly sanctuary the blue curtains in the Most Holy Place had angels sewn on them as a symbol of the heavenly court. “But ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) Psalm 32:1,2 states, “Blessed is the man whose transgression is forgiven, who sin is COVERED.” That’s why the Ark of the Covenant is COVERED with the Mercy Seat. I John 1:9 states, “IF we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.” Confess, repent, turn: God forgives and says to you as He did the woman caught in adultery, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” Jesus is our only mediator, or chief bridge builder between man and God. (I Timothy 2:5) Don’t presume to take His place or allow others to take His place as the object of our prayers, repentance, confession, or High Priest. God’s blessings are we prepare for our lives to come into judgment before God.
