Interesting facts about Memorial Day
Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich his-
tory and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. • Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to
History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day. • Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in
1866, the Georgia-based Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.” • It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a

century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be. • Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day.

That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s. Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

She was 19, 2022. born on March 3, 1935 in the old Ionia Hospital, the daughter † CROSS of Corwin and Alma (Berndt) Cahoon. Jean lived all her life Robert Cross, age 90, of Lake in Keene Township on Potters Road. She attended Potters Odessa, passed away Saturday, Corners School through eighth grade and then went on to May 21, 2022. graduate from Saranac High School in 1953. Jean married † MILLER Larry Burton on September 3, 1960 at LeValley Church. She worked in auto sales at her uncle’s garage from 1953 until Perry Lee Miller, age 69, of August of 1982. After that, Jean started working at Saranac Fenwick, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2022. Community Schools in the library and in the lunch room as an aid. Later, she moved to the Harker Middle School Library, † MULDER where she retired in 1995. Jean was also Keene Township Clerk for many, many years starting Hattiie M. Mulder, age 76, of in 1973, a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a lifetime member of the Boston Belding, passed away WednesHistorical Society and very active in her community. † FERRIS Steven Duane Ferris, age 56, from Lyons,
passed away peacefully surrounded by family December 3. He was born February 16, 1965, to Duane and Ardie (Jenks), had a passion for animals, the land and farming having grown up on the Ferris Brothers Dairy Farm by Lyons. After graduating from Michigan State University’s Animal Science Program, Steve chose beef cattle over dairy. He managed three different show cattle operations including one that took him to Canada where he met and married Sue (Dustow). Together they had two children before moving ‘home’ to settle on a small farm between Lyons and Ionia where they raise a small herd of Simmental Angus cross cattle. Steve worked off the farm as a self-employed animal feed hauler for ADM, Cargill, and Harvey Milling. He and partner Dan Jandernoa purchased the trailers from ADM and grew from the two to a group of twelve. When not working Steve believed in volunteerism at the Ionia Free Fair, as a large animal 4-h leader, club leader for Grand Valley Livestock, a woodshop resource for LeValley handcrafters, as well as president of the Ionia County Youth Meat Animal Sale for many years. He was quick to tease and to lend a hand to anyone in need. He especially enjoyed working with kids. He is survived by wife Sue, son Shane and daughter in law Grace (Pearson) of Ionia along with daughter Cheyenne of Flint. His family also includes mom Ardie, brother Roger (Kelly Fletcher) and sister Linda (Dave Coon) all of Ionia, brother-in-law Steve Dustow from Ingersol, Ontario along with five nieces and nephews and five great nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his father Duane, his uncle Doug, and sister-in-law Lu Dustow. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 12th, 2022 at Le Valley United Methodist Church with Pastor Nancy Patera officiating. Jodi Ann Schuring, age 56, of Muir, passed away unexpectedly on
Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Jodi was born on June 24, 1965, the daughter of John and Ann (Welch) Holland in Kalamazoo, MI. On May 23, 1987, she married the love of her life, Charlie Schuring, and they were married for almost 35 years. Jodi enjoyed baking, gardening, walking and riding her bike. She loved taking care of her sheep, her family and spending time with her dog, Sophie. She loved life and loved spending time with her husband and traveling. Jodi is survived by her loving husband, Charlie of Muir; son, Nicholas Schuring (Kristy Porter) of Muir; daughter, Lindsey Schuring of Muir; mother, Ann Holland of Gobles; brothers, Chad (Elizabeth) Holland of Alamo and Jason (Nichole) Holland of Gobles; sisters, Beth Holland of Parchment and Julie Holland (Mike Tinker) of Kalamazoo; best friend, Deana Rodel and many nieces and nephews. NOTICE TO BIDDERS The Saranac Housing Commission, Saranac, Michigan, will receive sealed bids in its offices at 203 Parsonage Street, Saranac, Michigan until 2:00 p.m. local time, June 14, 2022. A public opening will follow shortly afterwards. Any bid received after this time will not be considered. All work shall be performed per the plans and specifications prepared by Design House Architects and Designers LLC 5668 Redwood Road, Plymouth, IN. Bid work at the East Building shall consist of Bathtub, surrounds & controls replacement along with main building water valve replacement and associated general contracting work. All bids shall be executed on forms provided in the specifications or approved equal provided by the bidder. Each bid must include a "non-collusion" affidavit and fully enclosed HUD 5369-A form, and a Bid Bond in the amount of five (5) percent of the amount of the bid. This bond will be forfeit in case of any failure to enter into the contract at the bid price after notification of acceptance of such bid. Section 3 Performance as well as all other forms as outlined in the specifications must accompany all bids. Both the Architect and Housing Commission desire all prime contractors submitting bids to encourage all minority subcontractors to perform any portions of the work which will not be performed by the contractor’s forces or could be performed by the minority subcontractor. Bidders must submit written evidence that they have solicited quotations from qualified Section 3 subcontractors at the time the bidder submits its bid to the Housing Commission for all portions of work the bidder is not proposing to complete with his forces. The Architect and Housing Authority also desire that the prime contractor will make an attempt at the hiring of those housing residents that can perform any function of the work successfully. All bidders shall comply with HUD Section 3 Clause of regulation 24 C.F.R. part 135. The Saranac Housing Commission is in no way obligated to accept the lowest or any other bid submitted and reserves the right to reject any and all bids. The Saranac Housing Commission also may waive informalities in any bid if it judges to do so and to defer the acceptance or rejection of such bids until the financial arrangements for the project bid are completed. Winning bid will be taken under advisement and will be awarded after the Saranac Housing Commission board meeting on June 21st. Plans and Specifications may be obtained from the Saranac Housing Commission via electronic email format on or after May 25th. A pre-bid meeting will be held on June 2nd at 11:00 am at 203 Parsonage Street., Saranac, MI. Rep. Calley, House offer much-needed tax relief for Michigan families, seniors, veterans Legislature’s plan returns more than $2.5 billion to people who need it most
State Rep. Julie Calley today voted to provide much-needed tax relief for families, seniors, workers and veterans in Michigan. Calley, of Portland, said the more than $2.5 billion tax cut plan – made possible by an unprecedented state revenue surplus – will put more money in people’s wallets at a time when everyone is struggling under the weight of historic inflation rates. “I hear from people every day who are worried about the cost of groceries and gas, which seem to get more and more expensive every time you go to the store,” Calley said. “At the same time, the state is facing an unprecedented budget surplus. It’s irresponsible not to cut taxes and return money to taxpayers at a time when they need it most.” Highlights of the plan include: • Income tax cuts for Michigan workers. The Legislature’s plan lowers the individual income tax rate from 4.25% to 4% and increases the personal income tax exemption by $1,800 for single filers and $3,600 for joint filers. • Relief for working families. Families would
be eligible for a new $500 nonrefundable tax credit for each dependent 18 years old or younger. The state Earned Income Tax Credit, which offers savings for lower-income families and individuals, would increase from 6% to 20% of eligible income — a change the governor has previously supported. Restoring the state Earned Income Tax Credit to 20% of eligible income will deliver an average state and federal refund of nearly $3,000 to more than 730,000 working people. • Additional tax exemptions for seniors. Residents age 67 and older who may currently deduct $20,000 of income individually or $40,000 jointly would be eligible for an increase of $1,800 or $3,600, respectively, with future increases automatically adjusted for inflation. • Expanded benefits for veterans. Under current state law, a veteran with a permanent and total disability resulting from military service is exempted from paying property tax on their home. The plan would also apply this exemption to an eligible veteran’s surviving spouse and a spouse of a veteran killed in action. Veterans
with a disability determined to be between 50% and 100% would be eligible for a property tax credit up to $2,000. Finally, the state will reimburse local governments for the veteran exemptions, preserving local funding for essential services. Part of the tax plan, contained in House Bill 4568, was approved by the state House and Senate last week. The remainder of the plan in Senate Bill 784 was approved by the House today. Both measures will soon be presented to the governor for her consideration. Twice this year, the Legislature has sent tax relief proposals to the governor only to see them vetoed. Calley urged the governor to sign the plan and provide much-needed relief to residents.

May 16 was such a beautiful, sunny day for our blood drive at St. Anthony's Church. It was even nicer because Ken and Bob grilled hot dogs for our donors! Our donors were also treated with sandwiches, yummy cookies, snacks and beverages. Several individuals were unable to donate, but we still collected 47 units of life-saving blood. Breanna Kurzhals was a first time donor. Spencer stewart received his one gallon pin, Robert Parks his 3 gallon pin, Sharon Vosovic her 5 gallon pin Michael Cronk his 6 gallon pin, and Pauline Cousinaw received her 9 gallon pin. We had 5 double red donors: Robert Parks, George Rader, Neil Costello, Edward Overbeck and Sharon Darby. Donors will still need to sign up in advance for our July 26th Michigan Red Cross Blood Drive. A granite WWI monument stands in honor of all local WWI veterans. Over 320 engraved bricks lay before this monument representing the local WWI veterans. Belding itself had only one WWI vet that lost his life in that war and that was Hugo Fales. He is honored with his own granite monument.
Vietnam War
Our beautiful Vietnam memorial has several gorgeous pieces. 12 pillars honoring local Vietnam veterans line the walkway leading to a 6’ granite monument etched with the map of Vietnam. Behind the map lies 48’ of etched granite, 2684 etched names of every Michigan soldier that lost their life in Vietnam all guarded by a bronze field cross honoring those who lost their lives.
WWII
This Freedom Wall is a replica of the original Freedom Wall that was a piece of Belding history and was decommissioned in Nov. 1947. This wall is home to more that 754 names. Those are the names of all local WWII veterans that were serving during this war.

For those that were prisoners of war and those missing in action, a granite monument welcomes our visitors as they enter this park of honor.
Korean War The Korean War is represented in our veterans park with this granite monument and the engraved bricks that lay before it.

Visitors to our park will soon see a 3 paneled monument honoring those that served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. This monument is currently being constructed and money is currently being raised to fund this project.
