Interesting facts about Memorial Day Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.
• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp

in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day. • Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History. com notes that, in 1866, the Georgia-based Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.” • It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on

Rep. Calley backs budget plan to support local law enforcement, mental health, seniors State Rep. Julie Calley of Portland joined the Michigan House this week in approving a spending plan to provide support for local law enforcement, mental health services and other vital programs Michiganders rely on every day. “The last year has been incredibly tough on everyone in Michigan, but we’re finally starting to turn a corner,” Calley said. “As we transition from the pandemic, we must lay a good foundation that helps Michiganders who are still struggling and sets our communities up for brighter days ahead.” Highlights of the plan include: Mental health services – $215 million to address the shortage of psychiatric services across the state, $10 million to support police, corrections officers, firefighters, and other first responders battling post-traumatic stress disorders or other mental health challenges. Rural broadband – $150 million for broadband expansion grants to cover costs associated with expanding broadband internet service to unserved areas of Michigan. Local infrastructure – $300 million to help repair and replace local roads and bridges, $250
million in grants for local water and sewer replacement projects. Support for local law enforcement – $2.7 million for rural or “secondary” road patrols, $30 million for tuition assistance and stipends for recruits attending police academies, $5 million to reimburse county jails for housing offenders who otherwise would have been transferred to state prisons. Relief for families – $3.5 million for congregate and home-delivered meal programs, $6.55 million to establish 14 integrated behavioral and physical health clinics through a federal CMS demonstration program. Additionally, Calley successfully fought to include $500,000 to facilitate safety protocols for autistic and disabled individuals at risk of wandering and getting lost. This could include equipping at-risk individuals with GPS tracking devices, providing state matching funds for law enforcement agencies to acquire high-end search and rescue drones, marketing and outreach, creating safety plans, and registering vulnerable and impaired individuals. House Bill 4420 now advances to the Senate for further consideration.

† GASKILL Marilyn A. Gaskill, 74, of Lake Odessa passed away peacefully at her home on May 23, 2021. Marilyn was born to Herman and Aletha ( Warren ) Fisher. July 19, 1961 she married Stanley W. Gaskill who preceded her in death on August 17, 2018. She retired from Twin City Foods in Lake Odessa after many years. Marilyn enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Cooking for the family gatherings, canning. She was famously known for her peanut butter and chocolate fudge that cannot be replaced. Marilyn will be missed by her children; Laurie Stuart of Lake Odessa, Bill (Rachel) Gaskill of Ionia, Lyinda (Matt) Fox of Ionia, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren with another on the way, brother Robert (Nancy) Fisher of Gowen beloved uncles Richard and William Warren along with their families. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her. The family would like to give special thanks to Marilyn’s nurse Michelle, aids Amy and Elenor, along with the rest of the staff at Elara Caring Hospice, who gave comfort to her in her final days. Preceded in death by; husband Stanley, parents and brother Fred Fisher. He was the co-founder (1983) and owner of Blundy-Hoppes Tire and Auto Clinic in Ionia and retired after many years there. Bob was a lifelong farmer - a passion he shared with his sons. He enjoyed hunting and fishing but his love in life was his family, especially his grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers-in-law, Ken Dorin and Charles Diamond. Age 78, of Fenwick, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at Spectrum Health Hospital in Greenville. John was born December 8, 1942 in Ionia, the son of John and Ann (Losonsky) Yenchar III. He graduated from Ionia High School. John was drafted into the US Army and was honorably discharged. He started his work career as a barber in Key West and then moved back to Michigan and was a mail carrier for the Ionia Post Office before retiring. John was a member of the Carson City American Legion and the Alma Elks Lodge. He was proud to have harvested the wood for his home and was a talented stone mason. John enjoyed hunting, making maple syrup and wine, drinking cheap beer

Of Increasing Property Taxes The Township Board of the Lyons Township will hold a public hearing on a proposed increase of 0.0316 mills in the operating tax millage rate to be leveled on property in 2021. The hearing will be held on Monday, June 7 at 5:30pm at Lyons Township Hall, 104 Prairie St. Lyons. The date and location of the meeting to take action on the proposed additional millage will be announced at this public meeting. If adopted, the proposed additional millage will increase operating revenues from ad valorem property taxes 1.39% over such revenues generated by levies permitted without holding a hearing. If the proposed additional millage rate is not approved, the operating revenue will increase by 1.13% over the preceding year’s operating revenue. Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.
MEMORIAL DAY ORIGINS
Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. on May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the South began to recognize it as well. Sparrow nurses honored during Nurses Week celebrations held throughout the health system Sparrow Hospital and Sparrow’s Community Hospitals honored thousands of nurses during this year’s Nurses Week in recognition of the extraordinary care they provided during the past unrelenting year of the COVID-19 virus. Nurses Week concluded this week with ceremonies and recognition at several Sparrow sites of care. For the first time, every nurse at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing received a Nurse of the Year award as a result
of their incredible work during the pandemic. At Sparrow Carson Hospital, Tabitha Durant, RN, was named Nurse of the Year. Durant is a Surgical Services nurse who also helps on the Medical Surgical floor when her co-workers need an extra hand. She also has received three Daisy Award nominations from patients for the excellent care she provides. Her nomination mentioned her willingness during COVID to help on shifts and days she
doesn’t normally work so patients can get the care they need. “Tabitha is a wonderful nurse who represents everything great about our community hospital. She provides first-class care to community members of all ages and also floats to other nursing departments to assist them so that excellent patient care and safety measures are always maintained. We are very blessed to have her as part of our Sparrow Carson Team,” said Sparrow Carson

United States flag facts and handling etiquette
The United States flag was first imagined after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Continental Congress authorized creation of the first national flag on June 14, 1777. It was decided that the flag should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, to represent the original 13 colonies, and that the new union be represented by 13 white stars in a blue field to signify a “new constellation.” Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is most often credited with the original design. Today there are 50 stars on the flag to represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes still represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states. While this may be common knowledge, Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, may not be as widely known. The code dictates that the flag is to be treated with respect and proper etiquette. The code is extensive, but the following guidelines can help private individuals interested in displaying their flags do so in accordance with the law. • Flags should only be displayed in public from sunrise to sunset, unless the flag can be properly illuminated during darkness. In this instance, it may be displayed at all times. • When displayed with other flags, such as on a single staff or lanyard, the U.S. flag should be above all other flags. If flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left. • State and local flags are traditionally flown lower than the American flag. • During marching ceremonies or parades with other flags, the U.S. flag should be to the observer’s left. • The flag should be displayed at every public institution and at schools during school days. • When displayed vertically and not on a staff, the union should be on the left when observed. It should be suspended so its folds fall freely as though the flag were staffed. • The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. • The flag is often displayed at half-staff on days of mourning, including Memorial Day. The flag should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant, then lowered to halfstaff position, which is half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. • On a vehicle, the U.S. flag should be displayed from a staff firmly fixed to the chassis. It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle. • The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. It also should never have anything

State Rep. Julie Calley and the Michigan House recently approved a plan to help protect Michigan jobs by boosting savings for small businesses on their federal taxes. Calley, of Portland, said the measure deals with job providers classified as “flow-through entities.” These are job providers who personally pay taxes on income rather than the business itself. Thousands of small businesses creating jobs in communities across Michigan use this classification. “This common-sense reform will provide much-needed relief to many small businesses who
have been hit so hard this past year,” Calley said. “It also solves a problem that was unintentionally harming small job providers due to a federal policy change a few years ago. Our plan makes sure the small businesses that line Main Street and create so many jobs in our communities are no longer at a disadvantage to large C-corporations.” A change to the federal tax code in 2017 capped individual state and local tax deductions at $10,000. Because businesses filing on the entity level can continue to claim an uncapped deduction, the change places small flowthrough entities at a disadvantage. House Bill 4288 would compensate for the federal change by allowing qualifying employers to pay a new flow-through entity tax. Without a change to their overall state and local tax burden, a busi-
