SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY In cooperation with the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning and the Michigan State Police, the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Ionia Department of Public Safety and the Portland Police Department to target areas identified by OHSP as high risk traffic crash areas in Ionia County. Deputies and Officers will be conducting Seat Belt Enforcement in the townships of Ionia and Berlin and in the area of Portland from now until June 2, 2019. The purpose of this mobilization is to reduce fatalities and serious injuries caused by not wearing a seat belt. Here are some of the facts as to why seat belts save lives: Three out of four people ejected from their vehicle in a crash will die. Wearing a seat belt is the most effective way to stay alive in a crash. #BuckleUp #ClickItOrTicket #NoGoodExcuse In 2017, 65 percent of male, and 39 percent of female, passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes weren’t buckled. #ClickItOrTicket Young adults: #BuckleUp! Plan delivers guaranteed savings to Michigan drivers State Rep. Julie Calley today joined her colleagues in approving a bipartisan plan to significantly lower car insurance rates for drivers across the state. The House overwhelmingly voted to approve legislation guaranteeing lower rates by giving drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage, stopping price gouging on medical services for car accident victims, and combating fraudulent claims. The plan should soon head to the governor for her expected signature. Calley, of Portland, said the bipartisan solution is designed to end Michigan’s long tenure as the state with the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation. “This solution is a huge win for Michigan drivers,” Calley said. “People will finally have the freedom to select an insurance plan that meets their families’ needs without draining their budgets, and anyone who wants to continue purchasing unlimited medical coverage can do so. Michigan’s driver education curriculum requires at least one hour of instruction about vulnerable roadway users, including motorcyclists. A safety tip sheet for young drivers reminding them to look out for motorcyclists will be made available to instructors across the state as part of this campaign. Funding for the campaign comes from the Motorcycle Safety and Education Fund created by the Michigan Legislature in 2017. The fund includes $2.50 from each original motorcycle endorsement and $2 from each renewal motorcycle endorsement.

Secretary Benson unveils campaign on preventing crashes with motorcyclists
Campaign tackles common misconceptions to help keep road users safe Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today unveiled a traffic safety campaign – “Motorcyclists Are Hard to See. Look Twice. Save a Life.” – to inform motorists about how best to prevent crashes with motorcyclists. “Many drivers mistakenly believe most crashes with motorcyclists happen on highways. But, in reality, about 84% of all crashes happen on city streets,” Benson said. “That’s why it’s important to be aware of motorcyclists no matter where you’re driving.” Benson was joined by traffic safety advocates for the campaign announcement at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids. The campaign also will be announced Thursday in Detroit. The campaign will run throughout the summer riding season on radio, social media and other digital channels, television monitors at gas pumps and on city buses. Billboards also will be placed
at locations including high-risk corridors. The campaign website can be found at Michigan.gov/ LookTwice. The first-of-its-kind campaign promotes motorcyclist awareness, safety and education among motorists. Historically, education campaigns to boost motorcyclists’ safety have focused almost solely on motorcyclists, but Michigan’s other road users are also a part of the equation to make the state’s roads safe for everyone. Intersections pose a particular threat. Motorcyclists can be difficult to see in heavy traffic because of their smaller profile, and motorists waiting at a red light to turn left may get distracted by their phones or other devices and fail to see an approaching rider in time. “I didn’t see him” is one of the common statements recorded on law enforcement crash reports. We had such a delightful Red Cross Blood Drive at St. Anthony's Church on May 20, 2019. We had five first time blood donors... Shannon Chickering, Trenton Wyant, Hannah Goldman, Isaiah March and Madison Nash. We hope these first time donors will continue donating their life-saving blood in the future.
