– OBITUARIES –

† CAHOON (Fred) James Frederick Cahoon passed away May 10, 2024, a few weeks before his 90th birthday. He was born June 4, 1934, at the family farm, Boston Twp., Ionia Co. Mi., to Maurice and Jessie (Hatch) Cahoon. When he was 5 years old his father passed away. His mother continued to operate the farm that had been in the family since 1836.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ida in 1922, brother Robert in 1927, a sister Anna in 1989 and brother Larry in 2012.

Fred married Jacqueline Lawrence May 11, 1957. They purchased the family farm and continued its operation. He passed away the day before their 67th anniversary.

He attended North Bell rural school and Saranac High School. He served with the National Guard, Co. H, Ionia, Mi. They enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling. He was a member of the Ionia Co. Genealogical First Family Society.

Fred worked for McInerneys in Grand Rapids, then Fisher Body in Lansing, retiring after 36 1/2 years employment. He was very active in Free Masonry serving in Belding, Ionia, Clarksville and Grand Rapids. In 2023 the Order of the Purple Cross was conferred upon Fred which is the highest honor conferred by the York Rite College. This honor is conferred to those members who have distinguished themselves by service to humanity. He also received the York Rite Cross of Honor.

Fred served as: Master of Lowell Lodge #90, was past Commander of Ionia Commandery, was Past TIM of a Council, was the High Priest of Hooker Chapter 38, a member of the York Rite Cross of Honor Priority #22 and York Rite College #10.

Fred is survived by; his wife Jackie, sister-in-law Marilyn Cahoon, brothers and sister-in-law Ralph and Alice Lawrence, Larry Lawrence, Gary Lawrence. Nephews: Joe (Mary Jane) Everett, Steve (Linda) Everett, Tim (Nancy) Cahoon, Brian (Wendy) Cahoon, and Jim (Robin) Cahoon, Great-nephews & nieces, cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be held at South Boston Bible Church, Kyser Rd., Lowell, MI. at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior, Pastor Cory Malone officiating.

Interment South Boston Cemetery. A luncheon to follow at the Community Building. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Co. Animal Shelter. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. Online condolences may be made at www. lakefuneralhomes.com .

† HAYES Lance Emery Hayes age 68 of Ionia passed away May 9, 2024. He was born April 21, 1956 in Rapid City, South Dakota the son of Robert Louis and Nona Jean (Hardina) Hayes. Lance Joined the Navy in 1974 and served until 1977 on the John F. Kennedy Aircraft Carrier as a F-14 Tomcat Plane Captain. After proudly serving his country he would marry the love of his life Jennifer Wyman August 22, 1981 in Saranac, Michigan at Galilee Baptist Church. Lance loved golfing with his friends at RR Ranch in Smyrna. He also enjoyed making scale models and painting authentic soldier replicas. Lance also loved his Kitty’s. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Jennifer Hayes of Ionia. Daughter; Kristin Hayes of Ionia. Son; Nicholas Hayes (Garrett Fosdick) of Romona, California. Grandchildren; Kiya Hayes, Jordon Cooper and Ayden Cooper. 1 great granddaughter Aroura Emery Ann Hayes. Sisters Lori Possehn of Lake Odessa and Lisa Hayes Richter of Lake Odessa. Brothers and Sister-in-law; Steven (Linda) Wyman of Lowell, Debbie (Dan) McCallum of Muskegon and Sharon Wyman of Georgia. Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Lance was preceded in death by his parents, Mother and Father-in law Joe and Patricia Wyman, Sister-in-law Carolyn Wyman, Brother in law Kevin Wyman and Ron Possehn and Niece Ashley. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services for Lance were held at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac on Thursday, May 16th at 1:00 pm. Interment followed at Easton Cemetery. † POSSEHN Raymond Lee Possehn, age 87, of Ionia, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Corewell Health Butterworth Campus. Ray was born on April 16, 1937 to William and Bertha (Schroeder) Possehn in Ionia, MI. Ray was a lifelong farmer and area resident. He attend the Coon School until 8th grade, then graduated from Ionia High School.

On March 19, 1966 he married Marilyn Torrey celebrating 58 years of marriage. Ray enjoyed supporting his daughters and grandchildren in all their sports and activities.

He will be dearly missed by; wife Marilyn, children Diane (Kenneth) Kneale, Linda (Bradley Sr.) Kawulia, Teri Bardon, grandchildren Kristin Kneale, Kyle Kneale, Tyler (Lilly) Bardon, Bradley Jr. Kawulia, Austin (Corinne) Bardon, Joshua (Praise) Bardon, brother-in-law Norman (Sue) Torrey, sister-in-law Katie Possehn, along with many nieces and nephew. Ray was preceded in death by his parents and 7 siblings.

A memorial visitation was held Friday, May 10, 2024 at Koops Funeral Chapel from 5pm - 8pm. Funeral services took place Saturday, May 11 at St. John Lutheran, 617 N Jefferson St, Ionia, MI 48846 at 11 am with a luncheon to follow.

Donations in Ray’s name can be given to St. John Lutheran Church or Berlin-Orange Township Fire Department.
