DAISY Award winner at Sparrow Carson Hospital embodies loving kindness of an extraordinary Nurse

Celebrating Sparrow Carson Hospital’s first DAISY Award of 2020 are (from left) Jill Bartolo, Surgical Services Manager; DAISY Award winner Karmen Bussell, RN, BSN; and Monte Malek, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, interim Chief Nursing Officer. CARSON CITY, MI – Nursing Supervisor Karmen Bussell, RN, BSN, has been recognized as Sparrow Carson Hospital’s DAISY Award winner. Bussell was nominated by a family member of a patient she cared for, citing her compassion and dedication, noting, “Karmen was our patient angel/advocate from day one.” “I can say from the moment she wheeled Dad up to the floor… to his last few minutes of making him comfortable to peacefully pass into heaven with our Lord, our angel nurse Karmen was there! Her unwavering advocacy and care was more than comforting to us as family – it was our saving grace!” Bussell has over 30 years’ experience in healthcare – from bedside nursing to mental health to nursing supervision, and as a

Director of Nursing for the State of Michigan. Sparrow Carson Hospital congratulates Bussell for representing the extraordinary qualities that help our hospital provide quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time. The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia (ITP) at age 33. DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. During Pat’s eight-week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his Nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. The Foundation was created in Pat’s memory to recognize extraordinary Nurses for the enormous difference they make in the lives of their Patients every day.

American Red Cross Blood Drive

Three inches of rain Sunday and Monday didn't dampen the spirits of the blood donors and volunteers at Saranac's May 18, 2020 American Red Cross Blood Drive held at St. Anthony's Church. 48 units of life-saving blood was collected! Everyone came wearing their Covid-19 mask or were given one to wear. Americans are so creative! Robert Straub has donated his first gallon of blood, Melissa Cronk and Patricia Schwenke received their 3 gallon pins. Ryan Hesche donated his 4th gallon, Suzanne Meyers and James Meyer donated their 6th gallon, Evangeline Pulcifer donated her 7th gallon, Ed Ingvartsen donated his 10th gallon and Leo Rutz received his 15 gallon pin! Ryan Hesche and Edward Overbeck were Double Red Donors. We are thankful that everyone has stayed so healthy during these fragile times. We hope everyone gets plenty of sunshine, exercise, keeps their hands washed and stays healthy for our next blood drive, July 20th at St. Anthony's Church.

– OBITUARIES –

† BEVER Norma Bever, known to many as “Grandma B”,

found her way home to Heaven the morning of May 19th, 2020, at 100 years old. Norma was born November 21st, 1919 to Arlow and Mildred (Leak) Aves in Sebewa Township. She was the second of four sisters, following older sister Elaine Austin and followed by sisters Christine Towner and Marjorie Swiler. Norma married Marshall Bever on October 12, 1940, who was later killed in battle in WWII. Norma never remarried. Norma is reunited with her parents, all three sisters, and husband, but leaves a large family. Norma and Marshall had two daughters, Barbara Teichmann and Arlene Sandborn, Seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Norma lived her life by sharing everything she had. She was an active member of the Sebewa Baptist Church, Ionia and Hastings 4-H for over 40 years and serving anyone who walked through her front door. She was happiest when she was laughing about the past, watching the birds and swaying Hollyhocks through the window, being surrounded by friends and family, and sharing an iced tea or her famous apple pie squares. Grandma B did not fear death, maybe it is because she will never fully die. The sunshine in her soul created a light in everyone she met, a light that no darkness could defeat. One could not fit the century of Norma’s life into a novel, let alone a short obituary. Please help celebrate Norma Bever’s life with her family at a later date. Special thanks to Emily Sandborn for putting together the obituary for grandma.

What is a gap year? And should grads take one? Members of the class of 2020 have many decisions to make in the coming months. Many high school students enroll in trade schools or colleges after graduation, while college graduates start their careers or begin their pursuit of advanced degrees when their undergrad days draw to a close. But more and more high school and college graduates are taking gap years. According to the American Gap Year Association, a gap year is defined as an experimental semester or full academic year taken between high school and college grads in order to deepen practical, professional and personal awareness. Students often take a break from school as a chance to travel or gain some professional experience. Others use gap years as a chance for personal exploration before moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Gap years may once have been looked at unfavorably, but

Happy 25 Anniversary!

First Angel Part 3 - Worship the Creator The first angel of Revelation 14:6,7 finishes by saying, “And worship Him that made the earth, the sea, and the fountains of waters.” This is a quote from the Sabbath commandment of the Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20:8-11. It is the call for a spiritual restoration in rest and worship. Hebrews 4:4-12 tells us of that spiritual rest in Christ that is symbolized by keeping the Sabbath. The Jews didn’t get that rest because they didn’t keep the Sabbath, and if they did, it was a way of working out their own salvation, but the true Christian will keep the Sabbath as a sign of resting in Jesus. “For He spoke in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, and God did rest the seventh day from all His works. And in this place again, saying, if they shall enter into my rest ... There REMAINS therefore a REST to the people of God.” The word for rest in this verse is the word “Sabbatismos” -a literal keeping of the Sabbath. And the word for God -ABBA-is in the HEART of the Sabbath. Verse 11 states, “Let us strive therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man FALL after the same example of unbelief ” I Chronicles 16:26 states, “For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.” The Sabbath is the day God rested after creating the world in six days. A day, month, and year are scientifically explained, but there is no scientific evidence for a seven day week except God created in six days and rested, blessed, and sanctified the seventh day. His first act after creating the first six days was to fellowship with Adam and Eve on the seventh day. The Bible says the Sabbath is a SIGN between God and His people “Forever”. (Ezekiel 20:12, 20:20) Exodus 31:13-17 states, “Truly, my Sabbaths shall you keep; for it is a SIGN between me and you ... for it is a SIGN between me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.” God gave it to Adam and Eve. He put it in the heart of the Ten Commandments and said, “Remember” - don’t forget. Jesus kept it (Luke 4:16) The disciples kept it (Acts 13:42- 44, Acts 16:13, Acts 17:2, Acts 18:4) The Sabbath will be kept in heaven. (Isaiah 66:22,23) God made one day in seven holy. We are to keep ourselves holy every day, but one day, the seventh day, is holy to Him. What is the seventh day? The Romans named the days of the week after pagan gods Sunday, the first day, was named after the sun, the biggest thing in the sky. Monday after the moon, the second biggest thing in the sky ; Tuesday after Twiga; Wednesday after Wooten; Thursday after Thor; Friday after Freida; Saturday after Saturn. The Jews still worship on Saturday as the Sabbath today. The word for Saturday in over 100 languages is a derivative of Sabbath. Spanish - Sabado. Russian - Sabuto. Hebrew - Shabbat. Jesus died on the Preparation Day - called Good Friday. Jesus rested in the tomb on the Sabbath from His work of redemption. On the first day He was resurrected - Easter Sunday, the first day of the week. So the Sabbath is Saturday, the seventh day. The first angel’s call is to Fear God by reverence and honor by obedience to His commandments; Give Glory to Him by what we eat, drink, and do in holy living, and to worship the Creator by keeping His Sabbath day holy. This is the restoration message to His people to prepare them for His soon return. Now do you see why there are no other churches or preachers that have been or are giving this message? Why is this message so critical now? Next time: The Hour of His Judgment Has Come.

Memorial Day Remembrance

SARANAC MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and stay at home directive, the Memorial Day Parade in Saranac and program at the cemetery has been canceled for this year. We would ask that all citizens, in their own way, pay tribute to and show their respect for all veterans. As stated by Elmer Davis - “This Will Remain the Land of the Free Only So Long as it is the Home of the Brave.” We say “Thank You” to all veterans for your commitment and sacrifice. ~ Boston Township Board Members

While we must cancel our ceremony for this year out of respect for the health and safety of our community, we hope that on this Memorial Day, everyone will engage in a private moment of silence and prayer to commemorate our fallen heroes and their families.

Residents, visitors advised to avoid body contact On May 18th, 2020 the Lakewood Wastewater Authority experienced a sewage overflow into a creek that empties into Jordan Lake. Water testing performed by the Authority on May 19th revealed high levels of E. coli in the creek and in Jordan Lake. At this time the Ionia County Health Department is recommending NO BODY CONTACT for Jordan Lake. Additional testing will be conducted by the Wastewater Authority until E. coli levels return to normal. Questions regarding the details of the overflow should be directed to the Lakewood Wastewater Authority at (616) 374-3264. Questions regarding the Public Health Advisory should be directed to the Ionia County Health Department. For more information on E. coli in surface water, visit www. mi.gov/deqecoli For more information on sewage overflows in Michigan, visit www.mi.gov/sewagedischarge

Communication is at the core of any successful relationship. Families who are able to communicate effectively can express their concerns, needs and desires to one another in an open and honest manner. Effective communication can change a home environment, foster more intimate and trusted relationships, and serve as a foundation for children to grow. The benefits of effective home communication are numerous. According to Hearing and Speech-Language Services, regular and intentional communication with a child is one of the most effective tools parents and caregivers can use to foster healthy development, paving the way for the child to be an effective communicator as he or she grows and interacts with others. In addition, regular communication can foster a strong sense of self-esteem, improve problem-solving abilities, decrease problem behaviors, and prepare kids for voicing their opinion on important issues. No topics are off limits when it comes to stimulating family conversation. In fact, the more creative, funny and adventurous the ideas, the more apt children and adults may be to engage in the discussion. These talking points can help get the conversation flowing and require specific answers instead of vague generalities. · What has been the best part of the week so far? · Tell me something interesting you learned at school (work) today.

How parents can diminish their stress Juggling responsibilities to work and family can sometimes make parents feel a little overwhelmed. That feeling of being stretched thin can contribute to stress, which many parents acknowledge is part of their daily lives. Stress isn't always caused by life-changing events. In fact, a recent study of 2,000 parents in the United Kingdom found that the daily worries of bed time, getting homework finished, weekly food shopping, and meal times were parents' biggest stress triggers. The research, conducted by BPme, a new app that allows customers to pay for their fuel without leaving their car, said the average parent felt stressed six times a day. Data from a 2015 Pew Research Study indicates 15 percent of American parents say their job as a parent is tiring all the time, while an additional 18 percent say parenting is tiring most of

the time. Ten percent indicated being a parent is stressful all of the time, while 15 percent said it is most of the time. The younger the age of the children at home, the more stress many parents say they face. It is well documented that stress can have various negative physical and psychological symptoms, which put stress sufferers' overall health at risk. Parents can curtail stress by instituting some lifestyle changes and employing other management techniques. · DON'T TAKE WORK STRESS HOME. It's easy to bring home work-related problems, which can then combine with issues at home. Try to talk to a coworker or a spouse before leaving work to diffuse tricky situations so they can be left at work. · INCREASE QUALITY FAMILY TIME. Take a break from the extracurricular activities, volunteer responsibilities and the other tasks that pull families in

different directions. Slow down and schedule fun activities that foster parent-child relationships, such as game nights or family movie nights. · SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. Parents who are having difficulty coping can enlist the services of trained mental health professionals, advises Psychology Today. These therapists can offer helpful strategies for coping with life's challenges. · Stick to a routine. Keeping kids on routine schedules enables parents to know which moments of the day they can get a break to rest and recharge. · ASK FOR HELP. Do not be a martyr or attempt to be a superhero. Parents who need help should reach out for assistance, especially if it's to tame stress. Doing so is in the best interest of the entire family. Stress is something many parents face, but it can be overcome.
