Ellen Marie Trumble aged 75 of Orleans formerly of Muir passed away May 13, 2019. She was born August 15, 1943 in Grand Rapids the daughter of Roy and Luella (Purdy) Bitely. Ellen was a Sparta High School graduate class of 1961. She married Ervin Junior Trumble May 28, 1987 in Muir. Ellen was an integral partner with the Christian Clothing Center in Ionia where she volunteered her time. She loved gardening and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are her husband Junior Trumble of Orleans. Sons; Scott Gorby (Sheri Pearce) of Ionia, Kevin (Lynette) Gorby of Ionia, Darryl Gorby of Mt. Pleasant, Brian (Audra) Gorby of Caledonia. Step children; Douglas (Shaun) Trumble of Ionia, Tracey (Chuck) Sturgis of Holland and Jody Trumble of Texas. Brother Harold (Arlene) Bitely of Sand Lake. Secretary Benson proposes legislative collaboration, new initiatives to improve military community’s voting rights, recognize veterans’ service As part of National Military Appreciation Month, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today announced plans to improve voting rights for members of the military and their families and new efforts to recognize the service of veterans across Michigan. Standing in a hangar at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Grand Ledge, with military officials, veterans, state legislators and other guests in attendance, Benson said her plans (see document) will require legislative collaboration as well as action through initiatives by the Department of State. She is driven, she said, by what she experienced when her husband, Sgt. Ryan Friedrichs, was serving in Afghanistan with the Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade. Benson said she came home one day and found his absentee ballot for the 2012 presidential primary returned to their home as undeliverable. “Currently, military service members and their families

in Michigan face a series of obstacles in participating in our democracy, as my husband and I experienced firsthand,” Benson said. “I come at issues like voting protections as a military spouse, and as your secretary of state I am committed to better serve those who serve and protect us every day.” Among her proposals, Benson wants to allow military members and their spouses overseas to return their ballots electronically, to improve ballot tracking tools for military and overseas voters, and to create a portal for the military community at Michigan. gov/MilitaryVoting. She also supports eliminating the charge for military license plates and developing new license plates for families of service members and for women veterans. Veterans also would be recognized in secretary of state branch offices, and Michigan would join Americans from 13 other states through a new “Honor a veteran with your vote” program.

ORDINANCE ADOPTION NOTICE On May 14, 2019, the Keene Township Board adopted a Medical Marihuana Facilities Ordinance. There are definitions that match the State descriptions. Two growing facilities will be allowed of Class A up to 500 plants. No other permits will be given such as a provision center, safety compliance center, processor or secured transporter. A permit may be issued by the Township Board if the grower obtains a State license and follows all the regulations. The Zoning Ordinance will be amended to choose which zoning districts will allow a grower facility. An application section describes the forms and fees. The application review and approval section will describe the process for an approval. A permit approval time will correspond to the State license and a renewal process is described along with a renewal fee. There is a violation section for offenses and fines. This ordinance does not apply to a lawful registered qualifying caregiver or patient. Noncompliance with the State Acts, zoning or other applicable ordinances may result in a permit revocation according to that section’s described process.

A complete copy of the adopted ordinance is available for review in the Keene Township Hall outdoor bulletin board or on the Township website at www.keenetownship.org. This ordinance becomes effective 30 days after publication.

Rep. Calley spearheads plan requiring financial transparency from elected officials Bipartisan solution would expose potential conflicts of interest

State Rep. Julie Calley today announced a bipartisan plan to increase the transparency and accountability of elected state officials in Michigan. Calley, of Portland, said the plan will reveal potential conflicts of interest by requiring candidates for and officeholders of the legislative, executive and judicial branches to fill out a financial disclosure form. “A lack of transparency creates distrust in government, so I can understand why many people don’t have faith in their elected leaders,” Calley said. “By shining a light on our financial interests, we will create more accountability and give the people of Michigan confidence that we are acting in their best interests.” Michigan is one of just two states without a law requiring elected officials or candidates to disclose their personal finances. Under the proposal, elected officials and candidates for state-level offices would be required to divulge sources of income; stocks, investments and real estate assets owned; business associations above certain thresholds; and any relatives registered as lobbyists. The same information would be required for the filer’s spouse and any dependent children. “This plan creates a system of accountability that will expose any potential conflicts of inter-
