News from the Depot Boston-Saranac Historical Society
“ONE PICTURE is worth a thousand words.” I am sure we’ve all heard some form or other of this proverbial saying but looking at this photo of three
(3) Saranac siblings, Andrew Hill – US Navy, Hildegarde Hill Pierce – US Navy, Helen Hill Sykes – US Coast Guard (circa World War II: 1939 - 1945), can you see the whole story it tells? No? Well, here is some of the backstory this one image shares with us all.

Starting in September 1940, the United States began to provide significant military supplies and other assistance to the “Allies” (primarily Great Britain, France, and Russia versus the “Axis” countries made up of Germany, Italy, and Japan). After Japan’s bombing of “Pearl Harbor” (December 7, 1941) the US joined the war in what was previously viewed as a dispute between foreign nations.
Earlier that same year, US Representative, Edith Nourse Rogers (of Massachusetts), introduced a bill that would give women a larger role in the armed forces – not that women had not been involved with military efforts as far back as the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) in traditional roles as nurses, seamstresses and cooks. Some women even served in combat alongside their husbands, or disguised as men. There were even those few that served as spies “for the cause.” However, it was not until this bill, a version of which was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt into law, that the “Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was established.
NOTE: In 1943, the “Auxiliary” was dropped from the name, to become known as the WAC. Remember, American women had only received the right to vote (22) years earlier – the 19th amendment to the US Constitution (June 4, 1919). The formation of the WAC was one of the most consequential gender-based events in American history, allowing women to work in not only in the traditional fields of nursing, clerical, driving and baking but now in such

It was being able to serve overseas, in any capacity, that illustrates how women were giving military status with equal benefits, pay and subject to the same disciplinary code as their male counterparts.
