Ronald Eugene Wells age 88 of Lowell, MI passed away May 6, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on August 6, 1930 in Westphalia, MI the son of Paul and Rhea (Dutcher) Wells. Ron served in the Army during the Korean War. He married Marcella Miller on August 1, 1950, she passed away January 10, 2007. He went on to marry Geri Conner on August 6, 2011. He did small engine repair “Ron’s Repair”, loved gardening, mowing, feeding his ducks and other animals. He attended First Baptist Church in Lowell. Surviving are his wife Geri Conner Wells of Lowell; children Deborah (Troy) Black of Charlotte, Diana (Ted) Wells of Lake Odessa, Connie (Brett) Johnson of Charlotte and Kay (Dave) Beach of Hastings; step- children Randy (Nicki) Conner of Orleans, Lynn (Don) Green of Lowell, Cynthia Hendrick of Saranac, Kevin Conner of Saranac and Michele (David) Longfield of Rockford; daughter-in-law Sandra Wells of Sunfield; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings Alice Shattuck of Ionia, Doris Bentley of Charlotte, Jerry Wells of Portland and Steve (Cindy) Wells of Grandville. He was preceded in death by
his parents, son Ronald Wells Jr., grandson David Wells, sisters Pauline Powell and Josephine Hosford, brothers John Wells and Richard Wells. Sec. Benson testifies before Congress on election security
WASHINGTON – Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today gave congressional testimony on election security before the Committee on House Administration. Benson emphasized the federal government’s important role as a partner for work in securing elections to succeed at any level. “That role best manifests in three forms: resources, setting standards and establishing protections, and setting a cooperative and bipartisan tone,” she said. Using Michigan’s election system as an example, Benson discussed the importance of election security related to voter registration and data, the process of voting and the transmission of election results. She also testified about the importance of upgrading voting technology, auditing election results, improving reporting of election night results, preparing for emergencies and ensuring
accurate information sharing with the public. “I am encouraged by the bipartisanship and spirit of cooperation that exists among election

option to choose the level of car insurance coverage that best fits their needs and budget, just like they do right now with their health, home and life insurance policies,” Calley, of Portland, said after the vote. “Michigan families will see lower rates with this solution.” Michigan is the only state to mandate unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The plan approved today allows people currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options. The plan: ·Guarantees lower rates on the personal injury protection (PIP) portion of policies. It would result in a 10-percent reduction of PIP costs for drivers who buy unlimited coverage, a 30-percent drop for drivers choosing $500,000, a 60-percent reduction for drivers purchasing $250,000, and an 80-percent drop at the $50,000 coverage level; ·Allows seniors with retiree health coverage such as Medicare, and those with health insurance policies that cover car accident-related injuries, to opt out of PIP coverage; ·Establishes fee schedules to end the practice of medical facilities charging far more to treat car crash victims than other patients; ·Cracks down on fraud and abuse by creating a fraud task force; ·Provides more financial oversight of and transparency within the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association; ·Sets reasonable limits on compensation for attendant care contracts; and ·Helps the state ensure insurance companies charge fair rates, while addressing attorney fee settlements and significantly reducing litigation. The sweeping legislation now advances to the Senate for consideration.

An invasive species is one that is not native and whose introduction causes harm, or is likely to cause harm to Michigan's economy, environment, or human health. These workshops are opportunities for local citizens to learn more about some common invasive species in their area and what they can do to help manage and reduce their spread. Clinton County: May 15th from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Bengel Wildlife Center in Bath, MI Join Mid-Michigan CISMA staff and Dr. Pat Rusz to learn about some common invasive species and their impacts on wildlife. Subject to court approval, the secretary of state today settled a federal lawsuit challenging Michigan’s restrictions on ballot photography, sometimes known as “ballot selfies.” Under the settlement, in which both parties to the suit agreed to dismiss the case, voters will be allowed to take a photograph of their own ballot but only while in the voting booth. The agreement doesn’t affect other prohibitions on photography in the area where voting is occurring or sharing ballot images within 100 feet from the polling place (the buffer zone where electioneering is prohibited). “We reached a resolution that allows voters to have a full opportunity to express themselves, while at the same time ensuring that voters retain the ability to vote in private and without disruption or discomfort,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said. “As Michigan’s chief election officer, I am committed to policies that encourage and support voter participation and engagement, along with elections that run smoothly and securely.” The agreement was made prior to the May election but wasn’t submitted to the court and released publicly until May 8 to prevent confusion during the May 7 election. The Bureau of Elections will revise instructions on ballot photography prior to the Aug. 6 election. The case, Crookston v. Johnson,
was filed in 2016 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan in Grand Rapids. Benson became the defendant in the case upon taking office in January. The state attorney general’s office represented the secretary of state in the case. “Secretary Benson’s revised instruction regarding ballot photography is uniquely within the secretary’s purview in her role as the state’s chief election officer and supervisor of local election officials,” Attorney General Dana Nessel said. “The revised instruction directly led to settlement of this case. The instruction, which allows limited ballot photography but not ‘ballot selfies’ or other photography, strikes an appropriate balance between the freedom of speech and the need to protect the secrecy of the ballot and the decorum of the polling place.” Under the settlement agreement, voters will be allowed to take a photograph of their own ballot but only while they are within the voting booth. The settlement doesn’t change existing prohibitions on individuals: Taking “selfies” of themselves, either in the voting booth or anywhere within the area where people are voting. Taking any other type of photograph within the area where people are voting. Sharing images of a voted ballot within 100 feet from the polling place – the buffer zone where electioneering is prohibited.

With tick activity continuing to increase in Michigan, residents should know how to avoid ticks and tick-borne illness. Perform “tick checks” after being outdoors, even in your own yard. 5) Use EPA-approved repellents such as those containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Always read and follow the directions on the label, especially when applying repellant to children. 6) Create a “tick-free” zone around your home by keeping your grass mowed and eliminating clutter such as brush piles, wood piles, etc. Keep play and recreation areas away from woodland edges and place them on wood chips or mulch instead of grass. If a tick does bite, remove it as soon as possible. Seek prompt medical attention if illness occurs after a tick bite.
