WHERE DID THE MUSEUM EXHIBITS COME FROM? The Depot opened its doors as a museum (after its move to its current location in 1994), 150 years or so after the idea of “Saranac” came into being. The historical artifacts from within that century and a half of living did not magically appear but had been kept in storage, or on display, at local businesses, in the family households, on the farms, within the halls of the churches and schools, and brought together by the local residents as part of various service organizations that predated the Boston-Saranac Historical Society. One of the first such collections donated to the Depot Museum was the “Historical Color Guard”, sponsored by the LeRoy L. Dausman American Legion Post No. 175 of Saranac. Detailed period uniforms and weaponry, authentic wherever possible, the “Color Guard” contained examples from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, WWI and WWII, and the Korean War. They marched in hundreds of parades and events during

an eight-year period including the January 20, 1965 “Inaugural Parade” of President Lyndon B. Johnson in Washington, D.C. The ranks of uniforms continue to swell as donations from locals, of more contemporary military operations, are received. The BSHS invites you to come and see it for yourself at this upcoming “Memorial Day” Open House (Monday, May 30th, 2022, 11:00am to 3:00pm – following the Saranac parade). † CORKWELL Steven Phillip Corkwell, age 71, of Ionia,

passed away on Monday, May 2, 2022. He was born on December, 28, 1950, the son of Garold and Dorothy (Jasulaitis) Corkwell in Ionia, MI. On January 3, 1981, he married the love of his life, Cathy Waldron in Ionia. Steve worked for the Ionia Hospital for 45 years as a purchasing manager. He was an avid deer and turkey hunter and enjoyed collecting guns. He loved going up north to his cabin and spending time with his grandchildren. Steve is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Corkwell of Ionia; children, Angie (Matt) Ross of Levering, Nikki (Mike) Bohn of Levering and Kevin Corkwell of Ionia; grandchildren, Haleigh Bohn, Ella Bohn, Kennedy Bohn and Dana Ross; sister, Pam (Perry) Hummel of Clarksville; brother, Larry (Suzy) Corkwell of Nashville; sister in laws, Sue Shafer of Mason and Jackie Waldron of Greenville and brother-in-law, Mike (Debbie) Waldron of Madison. † COX Mary Frances Cox (June 21, 1948 – July, 2021) may have been Ionia’s most avid reader. From an early age, her interests were wide, varied, and never waned. History, one of her favorite subjects, made a living presence via her cats, all named after Russian czars or carinas, all treated as royalty. After graduating from Saints Perter and Paul Academy in 1966, it was no surprise that she was granted a full scholarship to Aquinas College where Mary earned her BA in History, with minors in Education, English, and German. A second scholarship led to a Master of Library and Information Services at the University of Michigan. From there she held various positions over the years at local libraries including those at Ionia County Memorial Hospital and Grand Valley State University. The only child of Helen and Francis Cox, Mary passed away in July, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents and several cousins, most recently her beloved Jon Caswell in 2019. Mary Frances will be remembered by her family and friends for her formidable intellect, comedic dead-pan humor, and generosity for those in need. A funeral Mass will be said for Mary on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Following the service, she will be interred at Mt. Bob, as he was known by most, was loved by his family and friends. A tool and die maker by trade; he loved solving problems and planning things out! He also enjoyed gardening, cultivating grapes and feeding his guests great meals. To his grandchildren, Robert was“Papa”. He was always the most devoted fan and usually the loudest spectator at high school sporting events! Bob loved camping, dogs, his Honda Goldwing and trips to the U.P. He also loved sending neighborhood kids on a snipe hunt! Most of all though, Robert loved teaching his children, his grandchildren and even their friends, how to solve problems using good old fashioned common sense and by always doing it right the first time! Robert will be very much missed by his surviving children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brother and sisters, many other relatives, friends and neighbors. Robert wished to have his remains cremated. His family will host a Life Celebration event in the near future.

She also was a former 4H leader and a Caregiver for many. Sandi adored her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Surviving Sandi is her loving husband Richard Heyboer of Portland. He married Vivian December 22, 2010. He loved going to garage sales, camping and traveling. In his younger years he liked going on rides on his pontoon boat and spending time with his family. One of his favorite things was having coffee every day with friends at the Bluewater restaurant and at Sherrie’s restaurant. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Vivian Wohlscheid of Gladwin, MI; children: AJ (Wanda) Urie of Portland, TX, Michelle (David) Barkley of MS, Rebecca (Randy) Hutchinson of MS, Steve Wohlscheid of Ionia, Erick (Delwin) Wohlscheid of MS; stepchildren: Samuel (Laurie) Seitler of Gowin, Cheryl (Roger) Benchley of Beaverton and Debbie Seitler of Michigan; 24 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. State Rep. Julie Calley recently led the House in approving a plan to allow judges who oversee Michigan’s treatment courts to discuss the use of medical marijuana with participants. Michigan’s treatment courts offer alternatives to imprisonment for people with substance use disorders and mental illnesses who have been charged with nonviolent crimes. The goal is to help participants address their underlying addiction and mental health challenges and reduce the likelihood of them re-entering the criminal justice system. “Judges and staff work closely with treatment court participants to address underlying challenges that may otherwise lead to a continuing cycle of reoffending,” said Calley, of Portland. “The goal is to empower the participant to make positive changes,

May recognized as Motorcycle Safety Awareness month ‘Motorcyclists are Hard to See. Look Twice. Save a Life.’ campaign begins

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson recognized Motorcycle Safety Awareness month today, urging drivers to be aware of motorcyclists on the road in the coming months. “We all have a responsibility to ensure the safety of motorcyclists we encounter on roadways, and especially at intersections,” said Secretary

Benson. “‘Look Twice. Save a Life.’ is much more than a slogan. It’s a safe driving practice that must become second nature for all Michigan drivers.” More than 7,000 motorcycle crashes with passenger vehicles occurred in Michigan between 2016 and 2020, causing many fatalities and serious injuries. The “Look Twice. Safe a Life.”

campaign encourages motorists to look a second time for motorcyclists when turning at intersections and to increase awareness that crashes are most common on city streets, not highways. The 2022 campaign officially kicked off as part of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s declaration of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

That sentiment means a lot to Lansing resident and crash survivor Carolyn Abel. Abel, 60, who has been a motorcyclist for over 25 years, was seriously injured while riding on Memorial Day in 2009. The crash happened a little after 9 p.m. on N. East Street on Lansing’s north side. She was traveling at 45 mph when a car exiting a restaurant pulled out in front of her. With no time to swerve or even apply brakes, she hit the side of the car and flipped over twice before landing on the pavement, shattering the bones in her right arm. Even after multiple surgeries, she still suffers from the lingering effects of her injuries, including the limited use of her right shoulder due to arthritis and scar tissue. “Awareness is everything,” Abel said. “This campaign is so important because drivers need to realize we’re out there on the roads with them, and we’re the most vulnerable. We need to remind older drivers to pay attention, but it’s even more imperative that we reach younger drivers so they can develop and carry forward safe driving habits.” This year’s campaign features billboard, social media, radio and digital video advertising with two main messages: 84 percent of crashes occur on streets, not highways — Most drivers believe crashes are more likely on highways. However, crashes between motorcyclists and motorists actually occur most often on major roads with speed limits of 35-55 mph. Look twice for motorcyclists at intersections — Half of motorcyclist crashes involving other vehicles happen at intersections. Motorcyclists can be difficult to see in heavy traffic because of their smaller profile, and motorists turning at an intersection may fail to see an approaching rider coming from any direction. Since the start of the campaign in 2019, there has been a 27 percent increase in drivers who report they always look twice for motorcyclists before making a turn, according to a survey commissioned by the Michigan Department of State. Drivers 18-29 years old saw the greatest gain, with a 52 percent increase in looking twice before turns. While safety messaging will be promoted statewide, the campaign will particularly focus on Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, where 43 percent of motor vehicle driver and motorcyclist crashes in
