† POWELL Sharon “Peggy” Powell, 80, of College Park, Maryland, passed away on April 13, 2024. She was born on August 2, 1943, to Esther and Forrest Scott of Saranac, MI. She graduated from Saranac High School in 1961, a year after she had met Rex Powell at a 4-H square dance, who was to become her husband for nearly 60 years. They dated for four years until their marriage in 1964. Soon after, they moved to Oklahoma for two years and then returned to Michigan for two years. In 1968, they went to Ames, IA (Iowa State University) where their two sons, Scott Wesley and Jeffery Joseph, were born. In 1972, Rex took a job with USDA in Maryland, their home since.
Being close to DC, family and friends came to visit and she would show them the sights. She earned an Associate Degree from Prince George’s Community College during which a life-planning course aptitude test suggested tour guiding (no surprise!). That encouraged her to pursue a career as a Washington, DC, tour guide, mostly for eighth-grade trips. That was her passion for 21 years, retiring in 2011.
She made it a point to be at as many of her sons’ and grandchildren’s school and sporting events as possible, sometimes travelling many miles. She was very proud of all of them.
As a 50-year member of Berwyn Presbyterian Church, she served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher, in the food pantry, with Presbyterian Women, and was a fixture in the kitchen for every event. She was known for her cheerfulness and energy, strawberry jam, purple, color-coordinated outfits, and love for gardening.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by husband Rex, sisters Bonnie and Donna, sons Scott (Dolores) and Jeff (Margaret), and grandchildren Stephanie (Benjamin), Charles, Jonathan, and Trish.
Maryland Services will be Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. Please see the website https:// www.borgwardtfuneralhome.com/obituary/Sharon-Powell for details.
A Michigan memorial service will be held May 11 at Shiloh Community Church, 8197 Heth St. Orleans, MI with visitation at 10-11am and service at 11am, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a memorial donation to the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741) or Berwyn Presbyterian Church (6301 Greenbelt Road, Berwyn Heights, MD 20740).

SOGGY BOTTOMS – were not always frowned upon in and around our Saranac.
Southwestern Michigan has historically been inhabited by the Potawatomi, one of the three Anishinaabe nations in Michigan referred to as the Council of Three Fires. The other two tribes to make up this council were the Ojibwe (aka the Chippewa), and the Odawa (aka the Ottawa).
Tribal settlements were mobile, with groups moving to new locations every few years utilizing the rivers and lakes for transportation. Their trails, paths, and portages were later traversed by the French coureurs de bois, followed by French and then English fur traders.
The water access and swampy nature of much of the area around here was one of the driving reasons for the original French

exploration of the early 1600’s; it was useful in the growing fur trade industry.
As part of the Treaty of Paris (17631776), the French turned over land that included the Michigan territory, to British control, where it became part of Upper Canada. Governments changed but not much in the Michigan landscape or its use. The British were intent on developing the lucrative fur trade and actively discouraged settlement of the interior region of Michigan to safeguard their fur empire.
Following the Revolutionary War, British control hereabouts ended by 1796, and American large scale settlement efforts started. Again, it was the natural landscape of waterways and dense forests, that brought the first land developers to our neck of the woods. The waterways were perfect for mills. Saw mills were fed by the dense forest that once covered the area. That led the way to the clearing of land, which brought in more settlers who started coming en masse during the Great Westward Expansion of the 1800s. As the forests were harvested, the newly uncovered tillable land was developed. Unfortunately, what worked well for the fur industry, the swampy nature of the land, soon proved to be troublesome

Midwest during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Drain tiles were largely made from clay and installed in hand-dug trenches, but the invention of polyethylene plastic in the 1940s led to corrugated, perforated plastic drainpipe in the 1960s. Large-scale tile installation is now routinely done using specially designed “tile plows” guided by GPS technology that can trench and lay the tile quickly. No more soggy bottoms, or would it be more appropriate to say, “No more soggy (bottom)land.”
