LYONS Walter P. Lyons, Jr., formerly of Ionia, passed away on April 10, 2024 in Texas. He was born in Ionia to Walter P. Lyons, Sr. and Alice (Ross) Lyons. Walt graduated from Ionia High School in 1965. He served in the Army, stationed in Germany, later in life he was employed with General Tire in Ionia. His most enjoyable occupation was his antique business.

Walt is survived by his brother Greg (Kris), sisters Mary A. Homkes, Pat (Dave) Clark and Margaret (Randy) Cook, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, Herb & Mary Ross, Joseph & Alice Lyons, brother Brian, sisters Linda Rowe and Lisa Miller, brother-in-law Don Rowe and nephew Joe Rowe. His final resting place will be Fort Custer Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan.

† POWELL Sharon “Peggy” Powell, 80, of College Park, Maryland, passed away on April 13, 2024. She was born on August 2, 1943, to Esther and Forrest Scott of Saranac, MI. She graduated from Saranac High School in 1961, a year after she had met Rex Powell at a 4-H square dance, who was to become her husband for nearly 60 years. They dated for four years until their marriage in 1964. Soon after, they moved to Oklahoma for two years and then returned to Michigan for two years. In 1968, they went to Ames, IA (Iowa State University) where their two sons, Scott Wesley and Jeffery Joseph, were born. In 1972, Rex took a job with USDA in Maryland, their home since.

Being close to DC, family and friends came to visit and she would show them the sights. She earned an Associate Degree from Prince George’s Community College during which a life-planning course aptitude test suggested tour guiding (no surprise!). That encouraged her to pursue a career as a Washington, DC, tour guide, mostly for eighth-grade trips. That was her passion for 21 years, retiring in 2011.

She made it a point to be at as many of her sons’ and grandchildren’s school and sporting events as possible, sometimes travelling many miles. She was very proud of all of them.

As a 50-year member of Berwyn Presbyterian Church, she served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher, in the food pantry, with Presbyterian Women, and was a fixture in the kitchen for every event. She was known for her cheerfulness and energy, strawberry jam, purple, color-coordinated outfits, and love for gardening.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by husband Rex, sisters Bonnie and Donna, sons Scott (Dolores) and Jeff (Margaret), and grandchildren Stephanie (Benjamin), Charles, Jonathan, and Trish.

Maryland Services will be Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. Please see the website https:// www.borgwardtfuneralhome.com/obituary/Sharon-Powell for details.

A Michigan memorial service will be held May 11 at Shiloh Community Church, 8197 Heth St. Orleans, MI with visitation at 10-11am and service at 11am, followed by a luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a memorial donation to the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741) or Berwyn Presbyterian Church (6301 Greenbelt Road, Berwyn Heights, MD 20740).

† RHOADES Aaron Shane Rhoades, of Saranac, passed away on April 20, 2024 at the age of 43. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 14, 1981 to Vincent Rhoades and Terrie Searer. Aaron enjoyed playing basketball, collecting Nike shoes, and North Face clothing. He loved children, especially his son. Aaron was an extremely caring person and was very hardworking, spending most of his time working in skilled trades. He will be missed by all who got the chance to know and love him.

Preceding Aaron in death are his son, Riley Shane Rhoades and brother, James Tyler Searer. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Jakson Rhoades; mother, Terrie Searer; father, Vince (Renee) Rhoades; sister, Kristine Houston; grandpa, Clyde Randall; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Saranac youth basketball program in honor of Aaron. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.

Legislator: Factoring illegal immigrants into apportionment base distorts political representation

State Rep. Gina Johnsen (R-Lake Odessa) has introduced a measure urging Congress to approve legislation requiring the exclusion of illegal immigrants when apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Apportionment is the process of dividing the 435 memberships, or seats, in the House of Representatives among the 50 states. The Census Bureau conducts the census at 10-year intervals and the results are used to calculate the number

of House memberships each state is entitled.

According to Johnsen, there are many challenges and complexities involved in the taking of the census and the apportionment process, including demographic shifts, changes in population distribution, and evolving societal dynamics. One of these challenges is the issue of illegal immigration, as a large illegal population has the potential to substantially impact apportionment.

On his first day in office,

President Joe Biden signed an executive order ensuring illegal immigrants would be included in the apportionment base, reversing a President Donald Trump memorandum declaring the exclusion of illegal aliens from the apportionment base following the 2020 Census. Now, all persons residing in a state would be counted toward that state’s population for purposes of apportionment, regardless of their immigration status.

Rep. Johnsen and other op-

posers of Biden’s executive order maintain that there are considerable numbers of illegal immigrants in the United States, and they are not evenly distributed throughout the country.

“Factoring illegal immigrants into the apportionment base for the U.S. House distorts political representation,” Johnsen said. “The few metro areas that house the majority of the country’s illegal immigrants are awarded a disproportionate share of seats compared to the representation those areas would receive if those not legally residing there were excluded.”

Johnsen’s House Resolution 227 also expresses concern that areas that cater to illegal immigrants could attract high concentrations of them, skewing political influence toward those areas even further when illegal immigrants are included in the apportionment base.

According to a Pew Research Center study, 61% of U.S. illegal immigrants in 2016 lived in just 20 major metropolitan areas, with the largest concentrations in Los Angeles and New York City. Pew estimates that as of 2021 there were 10.5 million illegal immigrants in the country, with 67.4% of those living in only 10 states. Large portions of the illegal immigrant population reside in California (17.6%), Texas (15.2%), Florida (8.6%), and New York (5.7%).

Estimates of the total number of illegal immigrants living in the U.S. over the last several years range from around 11 million to as high as 22 million; the equivalent of about 14 to 29 congressional districts.

“The federal government must maintain the integrity and fairness of the apportionment process, discouraging partisan manipulation or undue influence to ensure our government continues to represent the legal citizens of the U.S.,” Johnsen said. “We must safeguard the integrity of the apportionment process and prevent any gerrymandering or partisan manipulation that undermines the democratic values it seeks to uphold.”

Talking Is Teaching Spring Scavenger Hunt

We don’t know about you, but we love the annual Talking is Teaching County-Wide Scavenger Hunt and we are SO EXCITED to kick things off starting Monday, April 1!

All seven county libraries and the Ionia County Great Start Collaborative will offer this 8-week-long outdoor scavenger hunt to patrons in each community. Visit other communities to complete the hunt there too. Talk, walk, and earn a prize at each library! Try to complete the hunt no later than Friday, May 31 to receive 7 special prizes. Start your family’s adventure by visiting our Youth Desk beginning April 1 to pick up a scavenger hunt sheet! Contact Youth Librarian Eileen Pock at 517-647-6981 ext. 3 or epock@portlandmilibrary. com with questions!

Registration for Virtual STEM Club Littles Edition: Bubble Machine Take-and-Make bags starts on Thursday, May 9. Follow along on YouTube as we guide you and your little one through creating the bubble solution and experimenting afterwards! This program does require registration,

parental supervision, and is limited to 25 patrons.
