DETROIT – Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today testified before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Michigan Advisory Committee during a Public Briefing on Civil Rights and Voting Rights in Michigan. Benson focused her testimony on accessible hours and times for voting, barriers to voter registration, public education and access to election information, and transparency and integrity in government. The public briefing, which included testimony from government officials, academics, and community members and advocates, was in Detroit at the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at Wayne State University Law School, where Benson previously served as dean. The committee is examining the extent to which state voters have equal access
to exercise their right to vote regardless of race, color, disability status, national origin, age, religion and/or sex. Benson opened her testimony by recognizing the recent death of Judge Damon J. Keith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and his decades spent protecting individual liberties and battling systemic racism in corporations, municipalities and schools. She noted it was fitting for the public briefing to be at the law school, which houses the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. “It is difficult to imagine a world without Judge Keith in it,” Benson said, “but his legacy lives on through the people he has inspired to work in service of others and for equality and justice for all.”

Grandchildren; Nicholas Karbowski, April Chapman, Alicia Kingsbury, Chelsey Culp, Steven Karbowski, Hunter Lee, Angela Pringle and Shannon Culp. Six great grandchildren. Janet was preceded in death by her infant brother Arthur and Sister Louise. Memorial services will be held at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Sparrow honors Lansing native as Physician of the Year, inducts new members to Hall of Fame LANSING, MI – David Luginbill, D.O., a Lansing native, is Sparrow’s 2019 Physician of the Year. Kristin Bredin, D.O., Medical Director of Sparrow Hospice and Palliative Care, received the Sparrow Physician Leadership Award. They, along with five others inducted into Sparrow’s Physicians Hall of Fame, were honored during the recent Sparrow Physician Recognition Dinner at the University Club of Michigan State University. Sparrow is proud to recognize some of the more than
950 Physicians who are transforming care in the Mid-Michigan region. Sparrow Physicians, with their everyday actions, put the needs of our Patients first. Dr. Luginbill, of Dimondale, is a Family Medicine Physician who works for Sparrow Medical Group Lansing and has attended over 2,000 births. A graduate of the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, he was honored as Physician of the Year for 2014-15 by the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Dr. Luginbill, who was born at Sparrow himself, highly values the relationships he established with his Patients and the op-
portunity to care for individuals and families through multiple generations. “It’s the people that really are the best part of being a doctor,” he said. Dr. Bredin was born and raised in Holt and began her medical career as a Sparrow Hospitalist before transitioning to work with the Palliative Care team. She currently oversees all three Sparrow programs: Hospice House, Home Hospice, and Palliative Care. Inductees into Sparrow’s Physician Hall of Fame can be nominated by colleagues or members of the community. Opportunities to register through Election Day, vote early
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is reminding voters of new rights ahead of the Tuesday, May 7, election and encouraging Michiganders to take advantage of new voting opportunities thanks to the passage of Proposal 3 last November. “The May 7 election will be the first time Michigan citizens can take advantage of the sweeping new voting rights instilled in our constitution as a result of the Promote the Vote constitutional amendment enacted last fall,” Benson said. “Now any citizen can vote by mail at their convenience and register to vote up to and on Election Day at their local clerk’s office. It’s a new day for Michigan’s democracy.” Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 65 will hold elections Tuesday, May 7. To find out if your community is holding an election, visit Michigan.gov/Vote. Polls will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Individuals may register to vote up until 8 p.m. on Election Day. Applicants also must be residents of Michigan and of the city or township in which they wish to register for at least 30 days before Election Day. All eligible and registered voters in Michigan may request an absentee ballot without providing a reason and vote early. Drop off your ballot application in person at your township or city clerk’s office no later than 4 p.m. Monday, May 6, and you will be given an absentee ballot that you can vote in the office. You also can mail the ballot application. Requests to have a ballot mailed to you must be received by your clerk no later than 5 p.m. Friday, May 3. If you get your absentee ballot by mail, you can return it by mail or in person, but it must be received by your city or township clerk by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, (Election Day) to count. Keep in mind that USPS mail delivery
standards indicate most mail can take up to a week to arrive – so delivering ballot requests and voted ballots is best done in person at this point. Spring has sprung at the depot! We will start things off with our "Spring into the past" celebration on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5.
