† CONNER It is with the deepest sorrow and broken hearts, that our family regrets to an-
nounce the passing of Troy James Conner, husband, father, grampy, brother and friend to all. Born May 30, in 1967, he left us abruptly on Saturday April 10, 2021. The Barbecue Man and champion has returned home to the big blue sky. His love of family, sense of humor, kind heart and sharp wit will be deeply missed. He is preceded in death by his parents Katherine (Kay Werner) Conner and Samuel James Conner. His parents through Sherri, Sharon Lynn Carter & C.C. Carter. As well as Devin Ayres, nephew. He leaves behind his soul mate and love of his life Sherri Lee Conner, his daughters Sarah & Brandon Martinez, Jessa Delo & Brandon Linderman, Makayla Delo & Dillon Gentry, the grandchildren he adored Vayla Grace, Opal Mae, and Ryker James. His sister Tina & Scott Conner Wellman and brother (Sammy) Eric & Heidi Conner. The extended family he loved and cared for was much larger and included Joe & Cindy Thompson, Don & Renee Thompson, Doug & Rachel Thompson, Aunt Lu, Devin and all the Dowsetts, Michelle Werner and the Werner family. Along with his many nieces and nephews. The void he leaves behind will never be filled but we will always remember the smiles he put on our faces and the wisdom he instilled in our hearts. How to care for perennials Perennials can add color and vibrancy to any garden. One of the more desirable components of perennials is that they come back year after year, meaning homeowners do not have to invest in a gardenful of new flowers every year. That can add up to
considerable savings. Perennials often form the foundation of beautiful gardens. Annuals only grow for one season, produce seeds and then die. However, perennials die back to the ground every autumn and their roots survive the winter.

So the plants reemerge in the spring, according to The Farmer’s Almanac. Some perennials are short-lived, meaning they will come back a few consecutive years; others will last for decades. Though planted perennials require less maintenance than annuals, they are not completely maintenance-free. Certain care is needed to help perennials thrive, and that starts with the soil. In fact, soil is the single most important factor for growing healthy plants. Penn State Extension says most perennials grow ideally in well drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. In addition, organic matter can improve soil texture and water-holding ability. When including perennials in the garden, make sure you wait for the right time to plant them. The ideal time is during the spring or fall. Perennials come as container-grown perennials, which already have been established in the soil. Bare-root perennials are just roots that are often packed in peat moss. Most perennials do not need to be fertilized heavily. A single application in the spring typically is all that’s needed. Care along the way can include deadheading spent flowers so that plants can use their
energy on seed production and reblooming. Perennials should be divided when they grow large, every three to four years when the plants are not in bloom. Perennials produce fewer flowers or may look sickly when the time has passed to divide them. Early spring often is a good time to divide perennials, advises The Farmer’s Almanac. A thick layer of mulch can
help perennials to overwinter successfully. Perennials planted in containers will need to be transplanted into the garden before it gets cold because most containers cannot thoroughly insulate perennial roots. Apart from these strategies, perennials pretty much take care of themselves. As long as sunlight requirements match plant needs, the perennials should thrive.

Hero’s Salute The Saranac Community would like to take this opportunity to say thanks and show our appreciation to all the members of the Saranac Community Fire Department. You are without a doubt, the community's frontline heroes. It takes a special kind of person to commit themselves to the rigorous classroom and physical training requirements to be able to serve the community in this capacity. A fire department member must be willing to leave their family and loved ones to respond to a crisis, anytime during the day or night. When called to duty, a fire department member never knows what to expect. It may be as simple as rescuing a cat from a tree or ducklings out of a storm sewer. It could involve entering a burning structure to rescue victims or responding to an accident and extricating those trapped in a vehicle. Our fire department members never hesitate to respond, no matter what the need. The members of the Saranac Community Fire Department are all volunteers and receive very little reimbursement for their training and the 400 to 500 calls they respond to each year. Their coverage area includes the Village of Saranac, Boston Township, and portions of Berlin, Easton and Keene Townships respectively. We are deeply grateful to the members of the Saranac Community Fire Department and their families, for all the sacrifices they make in their commitment to protect the lives and property of the residents in the Saranac Community. If you have any interest in becoming one of these key people who are so crucial to protecting the life and safety of our community, please contact the fire department by phone at 616-642-6000.
