DIY FACE MASK TUTORIAL

PRO TIP: Add a pipe

cleaner, floral wire or twist-ties in the top edge casing for pinching the mask around the nose for added security.

Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconson

From the CDC: HCP use of homemade masks – In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

MATERIALS:

1. 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric 7” x 9” 2. 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric 1 ½” x 6” 3. 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric 1 ½” x 40” 4. Ruler 5. Pins 6. Scissors 7. Sewing machine & thread Masks should be constructed from tightly woven, high thread count cotton fabrics. The fabric should not have any stretch, and should not be knit (i.e. t-shirt material). Recommended fabrics include: Poplin, Shirting, Sateen, and Percale in 100% cotton. A possible source of fabric is high thread count sheets and pillow cases.

*Be sure to sew in place.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Lay main mask pieces wrong sides together. Sew around edges at 1/4” to secure 2. To create pleats: place pins along 7” edges as illustrated 3. Bring first needle to second to create pleat. Repeat with third & forth, fifth & sixth 4. Sew along previous stitching to secure pleats 5. Press up 1/4” on both 1 ½” x 6” binding pieces 6. Lay unfolded side along pleated edge of mask, stitch at 1/4” 7. Fold binding around seam allowance & pin on opposite side, encasing raw edge. Top-stitch in place. 8. Repeat for opposite side. Trim binding to match mask. 9. On both 1 ½” x 40” strap pieces, fold & press long edges to center

Wondering if your fabric will work? A simple way to check is to fold it into two layers. You shouldn’t be able to see through the fabric, but you should still be able to breathe if you hold it over your mouth.

10. Fold the mask in half along the long edge & mark the center with a pin. Do the same with the strap

Before you start, fabrics should be washed and dried on Hot in order to pre-shrink them.

13. Unfold strap ends. Fold in 1/4”, then re-fold pressed creases. Pin to secure

11. Matching centers, pin the strap in place. Stitch to mask body at 1/4” 12. Wrap strap around seam allowance as on binding & pin 14. Top stitch along entire strap, including mask. To finish, stitch across strap ends to secure, and press pleats flat

PASSOVER At this time of year, Easter is celebrated. In the Bible, this time was called Passover. Moses was sent to Pharoah by God to let the Israelites go. Pharoah refused and 10 plagues fell on Egypt. The last plague was to be the death of every firstborn child in every household. On that day, God established the Passover (Exodus 12:11, 23) They were to kill a lamb and put the blood on the upper door post and two side posts. When the avenging angel saw the blood, he would Passover them and their house would be safe. The blood on the doorposts formed a symbolic cross showing that it is Jesus’ blood that saves us. Just as Passover represented God’s deliverance for His people from Egypt, so the blood of Jesus shed on the cross of Calvary shows God’s deliverance for His people from their sins. “Without shedding of blood, there is no remission.” (Hebrews 9:22.) “But we see Jesus…that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” (Hebrews 2:9) I Corinthians 5:7 states, “For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.” On Passover, Jesus said, “This cup is the new testament in my blood.” I Corinthians 11:25. He also said, “Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you.” (Verse 24) Unfermented wine and unleavened bread represent Christ’s pure blood and sinless body because neither yeast nor fermentation could symbolize His perfect life. Welch, a Methodist, started producing grape juice to celebrate the Lord’s Supper with the pure symbols of Christ’s sacrifice. The Passover was one of several yearly Sabbaths, or Feast Days, celebrated once a year, just as Easter is celebrated once a year to commemorate Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Without that sacrifice, no-one would be saved or have the hope of eternal life. Luke 23:54-56 tells us Jesus died on the Preparation day. That we call Good Friday. The women went and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment. This is the weekly Sabbath day. Early on the first day of the week, Jesus was resurrected. We call it Easter Sunday. Jesus rested in the tomb on the Saturday Sabbath from His work of redemption. Luke 4:16 tells us Jesus’ custom was to go to church on the Sabbath – Saturday. He later told His disciples to pray that their flight not be on the Sabbath day from the destruction of Jerusalem. He expected them to still be keeping it. The disciples kept it in Acts 16:13 and in Acts 17:2. In Acts 18:4 we see Paul reasoning with Jews and Gentiles every Sabbath and verse 11 says he stayed there a year and a half teaching on the Sabbath day. That’s over 70 Sabbath days Paul kept. And in Acts 13: 42-44 we see Paul preaching to the Gentiles on the Sabbath. He didn’t say to them, “Come back on Sunday, the first day, and I’ll preach to you then. In the new heavens and the new earth, we will still be keeping the Sabbath day. (Isaiah 66:22, 23.) God gave us the Sabbath for two reasons : as a SIGN of His being the Creator (Ezekiel 20:20) and a SIGN of His sanctification power (Ezekiel 20:12). In 321AD, the Roman Emperor Constantine made a law commanding everyone to observe the “venerable day of the Sun” once a week as a day of rest to worship the sun god. The Church in Rome made this Pagan Sun celebration the official day of rest for all Christians in honor of the resurrection. But the question is, can any man or church change God’s Ten Commandment law? God Himself said, “My covenant will I not break, nor altar the thing that is gone out of my lips.” (Psalm 89:34). And God spoke the Ten Commandments. If you would like a free book Daniel Verse by Verse or Revelation Verse by Verse call 616-307-1461. For a free copy of War in Revelation call 616755-5022 As we look back to Calvary at this special time once a year, let’s also remember the Sabbath day once a week as a reminder of His Creative power and His ability to sanctify us. Let’s get ready for Jesus’ soon return. God bless you during this time of Christian celebration. Paid for by Michael Fracker 307-755-5022

How to support local businesses during mandatory restrictions The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 throughout the United States in March 2020 transformed American lives in ways many might never have imagined possible. Social distancing recommendations and restrictions on gatherings of more than a handful of people had a ripple effect on the economy that adversely affected many small businesses. Small businesses are the backbones of local communities. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses make up 99.9 percent of all businesses in the

ICKETS

United States and employ 59.9 million employees. The SBA notes that the accommodation and food services sector is the second largest small business industry. Many of these businesses have been hit especially hard as more and more of their regular customers stay at home in the wake of government advisories promoting social distancing. But small businesses are vital to local communities, and there are ways to support them and help them stay afloat as they confront the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. · Order delivery. It's still possible

to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations. · Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew

Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19. · Purchase a gift card. Gift cards can help small businesses

generate revenue at a time when their doors are largely closed to the public. This can be vital to these businesses' survival, and it gives consumers something to look forward when life returns to normal. · Help market local businesses. Spread the word when local businesses deliver in the wake of the restrictions put on them due to COVID-19. Share these experiences via social media or online reviews, and urge your neighbors to patronize these businesses. Local businesses are suffering during the COVID-19 outbreak. But communities can come together to support business owners and their employees to help these vital businesses stem the tide.

LANSING, MICH. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is seeking election workers to support elections amidst the coronavirus crisis. The May 5 local elections will be conducted primarily by mail, but election workers are needed to process and count ballots and staff clerk offices. “Elections are the foundation of our democracy, and our nation has a long history of holding them even in times of crisis and uncertainty,” said Benson. “All election work will be done in strict adherence to the protocols to prevent coronavirus transmission, including exercising social distancing, using sanitary equipment, and maintaining strong hygiene.” Some clerks have said that many of the election workers that have served them in the past are seniors and not willing to do so in May due to their increased vulnerability to the coronavirus. Secretary Benson and her administration are seeking to fill their places with younger and less vulnerable workers by reaching out to large employers, colleges and sports teams. “Democracy is a team sport, and election workers are the most valuable players,” said Benson, alluding to the website where people can fill out an interest form to serve, Michigan. gov/DemocracyMVP. All registered voters are eligible to serve as election workers statewide. (Those who are unregistered can do so at Michigan.gov/Vote.) Those who fill out the interest form will have their information shared with clerks who need assistance. If appointed to work, they will be paid for their time. The local elections – many of which are on school district millages and bonds – are not taking place in all jurisdictions in May. Last month Secretary Benson asked clerks to urge the entities with questions slated

for the May ballot to postpone them to the August election. About half of those entities did so. Others did not or could not, often because school funding would expire this summer. Last week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order that will close all but one polling place – typically the clerk’s office – in each election jurisdiction. To encourage everyone who can to stay home and vote by mail, the Department of State will mail absentee ballot applications to all registered voters, and all new registrations will be treated like an absentee ballot application, prompting the issuance of an absentee ballot. “Voters like voting by mail because it is easy, private, and can be done on their own timing and while researching issues and candidates at home,” said Benson. “It also eliminates the possibility of coronavirus transmission for the voter and, with simple precautions like gloves and social distancing, the election workers as well. Finally, voting by mail is absolutely secure, as the signature matching requirement is a built-in security check.” Clerk offices will remain open through Election Day, enabling same-day voter registration and voting in person, including for people with disabilities who wish to vote using assistive equipment, and others to drop off their ballots if they forget to mail it in time. Voter registration can also be done by mail or online at Michigan.gov/Vote through April 20. Between April 20 and May 5, new registrations must be accompanied by proof of residence, which can also be submitted by mail or electronically. Information around this outbreak is changing rapidly. The latest information is available at Michigan.gov/Coronavirus and CDC.gov/Coronavirus.

www.petersenoil.com Rep. Calley supports measure to extend state of emergency until May 1

WE ARE ACCEPTING THE FOLLOWING NEW OR UNOPENED ITEMS:

Michiganders deserve greater transparency in the crisis

State Rep. Julie Calley today joined her colleagues in extending Michigan’s state of emergency designation related to the coronavirus pandemic until May 1. Calley, of Portland, said she favored the plan over the 70day extension proposed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which would have extended her emergency powers into mid-June. “These are uncertain times, and the information we have about this public health crisis changes every day,” Calley said. “The responsible thing to do is extend the state of emergency through the end of the month, which is aligned with federal guidance, and then re-examine with updated information.” In the meantime, Calley believes Michiganders deserve answers. For example, why was the entire state shut down, in comparison to a regional approach? Why has the administration barred people from working, yet can’t adequately provide them with access to unemployment claims? Why not clarify the multitude of gray areas in the Critical Infrastructure Workforce list, thereby supporting workers as well as law enforcement and prosecutors? What the state’s plan is for getting Michigan back to work? Will a risk assessment model be used? If so, some businesses could open their doors sooner than others. Beaumont, the state’s largest health system, recently published an urgent call for greater transparency. The CEO said he remains “concerned that the absence of adequate data and a state-enabled patient load-balancing system could result in additional and avoidable risks for patients.” “This simply cannot continue,” Calley said. “We all need access to complete and timely information.” Calley said she has heard a lot of feedback from community members, especially since the stay-at-home order has been in place. “So many employees are unable to work and worried about paying the bills. Small business owners are struggling to stay afloat and concerned about their workers who may never get called back to their jobs,” Calley said. “People deserve well-thought-out plans that balance the emergent health risks with the rights and liberties that are guaranteed to them.”

Rep. Calley and her staff are working remotely, so they can continue to serve residents during the COVID-19 outbreak. People with questions or concerns can reach her office by calling (517) 373-0842 or emailing JulieCalley@house.mi.gov.
