From the CDC: HCP use of homemade masks – In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

INSTRUCTIONS:

MATERIALS:

1. 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric 7” x 9” 2. 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric 1 ½” x 6” 3. 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric 1 ½” x 40” 4. Ruler 5. Pins 6. Scissors 7. Sewing machine & thread Masks should be constructed from tightly woven, high thread count cotton fabrics. The fabric should not have any stretch, and should not be knit (i.e. t-shirt material). Recommended fabrics include: Poplin, Shirting, Sateen, and Percale in 100% cotton. A possible source of fabric is high thread count sheets and pillow cases.

1. Lay main mask pieces wrong sides together. Sew around edges at 1/4” to secure 2. To create pleats: place pins along 7” edges as illustrated 3. Bring first needle to second to create pleat. Repeat with third & forth, fifth & sixth 4. Sew along previous stitching to secure pleats 5. Press up 1/4” on both 1 ½” x 6” binding pieces 6. Lay unfolded side along pleated edge of mask, stitch at 1/4” 7. Fold binding around seam allowance & pin on opposite side, encasing raw edge. Top-stitch in place. 8. Repeat for opposite side. Trim binding to match mask. 9. On both 1 ½” x 40” strap pieces, fold & press long edges to center

Wondering if your fabric will work? A simple way to check is to fold it into two layers. You shouldn’t be able to see through the fabric, but you should still be able to breathe if you hold it over your mouth.

10. Fold the mask in half along the long edge & mark the center with a pin. Do the same with the strap

Before you start, fabrics should be washed and dried on Hot in order to pre-shrink them.

13. Unfold strap ends. Fold in 1/4”, then re-fold pressed creases. Pin to secure

– OBITUARIES – † FERGUSON Virginia Mae “Ginny” Ferguson age 94 of Ionia, MI passed away March 29, 2020. She was born February 3, 1926 in Ionia, MI the daughter of Martin and Rose (LaPar) Laiza. Ginny married Clifford A. Ferguson May 16, 1949 he preceded her in death February 12, 2008. She worked at A/C spark plug in Ionia, Chrysler Trim Plant in Lyons, Riverside Party Store in Ionia, and later Royal Down in Belding. Ginny was a past member of First Christian Church of Ionia. She loved watching her grandchildren, knitting, baking, cooking and playing Bingo. Surviving are her children; Larry (Kathleen) Ferguson of St. Ignace, Gary Lee (Janice) Ferguson of Ionia, Craig (Jean) Ferguson of Saranac, Debra Rose (Matthew) Macauley of Ionia, Daughter in Law Cathy Ferguson of Grand Rapids; Grandchildren Cindy Ferguson, Wendy (Ron) Larsen, Paul Ferguson, Brian Ferguson, Rae Lyn Ferguson, Gentry Rose (Christina Jacobs) Ferguson, Mara Leigh (Mark Fate) Ferguson, Christopher (Lauren) Ferguson, Erin (Adam) Ingraham, Cierra Mae Waterman and Fiancé Josh Snyder, Leah Rose (Aaron) Hardy. 12 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was an Army Engineer (370th Battalion), expert rifle medal (highest score shooting left-handed) and was a marksman (sniper) Royce worked 30 years for General Motors in Skilled Trades. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in Northern Michigan. Surviving Royce are his children; Douglas (Nancy) Hendrick, Jill (Kurt) Munro of Marne, Brothers; Bernard (Pat) Hendrick, Wayne (Gaila) Hendrick. Daughter-in-law: Victoria Hendrick, Sister-in-laws, Francis Hendrick, Katheryn Tasker, Norma Bever. Grandchildren; Richie, Amanda, Gretchen, Brandon and Erica. Great grandchildren Elizabeth, Blake, Christian, Cody and Matthew and many nieces and nephews. † SCHROCK Velma Schrock, 83, of Clarksville went to be with her Lord on March 27, 2020 at her home. She was born on June 19, 1936 in Au Gres, MI to Daniel and Alma (Handrich) Gingerich. On December 27th, 1954 Velma married T. Edward Schrock and together they spent 65 years raising children and farming. Velma was a tremendous woman and loved working with children. Holding many crafting sessions as a way to bring children into the church. She was a wonderful mother instilling a sense of hard work in all of her children, but also making sure they had time for fun. Ed and Velma spent their later years traveling Michigan in their Cessna 150. She will be dearly missed by: husband Ed, children; Linford (Debbie), Linda (Jim) Koetsier, Lamar (Teri), Lauise (Bud) Stahl and Ladean (Cathy), 15 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren, siblings Erma (Glenn) Maust and Fred (Sandra) Gingerich along with many nieces and nephews. Preceding Velma in death are: her parents, an infant sister Catherine V., grandson Kyle, sister in law Wilma Gingerich. A private burial will take place in Bowne Mennonite Cemetery with a Memorial to take place at a later date for the public. Memorials can be given to Bowne Mennonite Church Sunday School Program. † STACKMAN Charles Francis Stackman, of Ionia, Michigan, died peacefully on March 31, 2020 in Lansing, Michigan at the age of 72. Charles was born on December 12, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan to Charles V. and Mary Stackman. He is survived by his wife Loretta, of 40 years; daughter, Debbie (Murray) Hill-Cousins; sons, Dean (Nicola) Bedford and Scott (Stacey) Bedford of the United Kingdom; step-son, Brent (Deb) Radhs; step-daughters Tracy (Chad) Dickinson, and Tricia (Greg) Chismar; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and his cousin, Doreen. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Jean; as well as his step-sons, Christopher and Brian; and step-grandson, Christopher. Over the years, Charles held many different jobs including working with the Ionia Sheriff and Ionia City Police Departments, he was an HVAC tech, and he owned a candy store in Ionia and a restaurant in Bellville, Michigan. His many hobbies included antiquing and wood working, as well as fishing with his favorite fishing buddies, Matt and Abby. His greatest love was the relationship he had with Jehovah God, speaking about Him and sharing Bible truths with others. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
