Sparrow Health System launches COVID-19 virtual care

The new app is accessible by smartphone, tablet or computer. The service is also important in aiding the community in maintaining recommended social distancing practices. Not intended for general Coronavirus questions, this COVID-19 virtual care app is aimed toward at-risk individuals who are exhibiting cold or flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, body aches, shortness of breath or a cough. Individuals served through the virtual care process will connect directly with a board-certified Caregiver who is also trained in telehealth and who will assist with determining appropriate next steps for in-home treatment and quarantine or emergency medical care. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The virtual service is available at no cost at this time. “The COVID-19 virtual care option is an important community tool for those with flu-like symptoms who are unsure about what to do next,” said Douglas Edema, M.D., President of Sparrow Medical Group. “Virtual care for at-risk residents can make a very big difference in limiting the spread of disease during pandemics such as the coronavirus outbreak.” The mobile app can be downloaded on an iPhone or Android or a session can be started using a video-enabled laptop or desktop computer. † BOWEN Fred C. Bowen Jr. age 91 of Saranac passed away on March 25, 2020. Fred was born on February 27, 1929 in Ionia, the son of Fred and Alice (Friend) Bowen. Fred married Beatrice Weeks on November 22, 1947 and they had over 72 years together. Fred enjoyed camping with his wife and family, he also enjoyed riding his bike at the Saranac Nature Park where he often peddled 15 to 18 miles per day. Fred graduated from Saranac High School and spent most of his life as a self-employed carpenter in the Saranac area. In his later years he worked as a construction site manager. He served on the Saranac Community Fire Department for 39 years where he held the positions of Lieutenant, Captain and Assistant Fire Chief respectively. Fred was very proud of his lifetime membership with the Boston Saranac Historical Society. He was a member of the Easton United Methodist Church. Fred is survived by his wife, his sister Jane (Jerry) Gallagher, children Yvonne (Everett) Binder, Dennis G. (Nanci Zeran) Bowen, Cathy (Barry) Badge, Tom (Jackie) Bowen, Brian (Kelly) Bowen, Jeff (Paula) Bowen, 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Ionia, a member of the Masonic Lodge and also a member of the Operator’s Union. Lawrence enjoyed wintering in Florida and spending time on his computer. He was employed at Thompson Cabinet in Ludington, MI, where his draftsman career began. He joined the Army in 1957 and served until 1959 and was stationed at White Sands, New Mexico. He later was employed at Carrom Industries in Ludington, MI until he moved to Ionia, MI where he became furniture factory supervisor at the Michigan Reformatory. Helge “Swede” as he was referred to by friends was extremely proud of his Swedish heritage, and a high light in his life was a trip to Sweden where he met many relatives. Swede enjoyed auctions, always looking for a bargain. In the summer, he would fill his trusty green van with “stuff” to sell at the Trufant Flea Market. He also enjoyed working in his garden and refurbishing furniture. He is survived by his wife, Andrea, whom he married Feb 26, 1971; children, Helen (Karl) Gratriex of Susanville, CA, Alana (Scott) Boley of Columbia, MO, Helge “Duffy” (Carrie) Johnson of Ionia and Arik Johnson of Grand Rapids; Grandchildren, Jordan Boley of Portage, MI, Kierstin Boley of Columbia, Missouri, Alexandra Johnson of Greenville, MI and Carter Johnson of Grand Rapids, MI. Sparrow Health System first hospital in Mid-Michigan to conduct same-day inpatient Coronavirus testing LANSING, MI – Sparrow has become the first hospital in Mid-Michigan, and among only a few in the state, to perform same-day COVID-19 testing at its Center for Laboratory Medicine in Lansing. Sparrow was the first health system in Michigan with the capability to deliver a laboratory-confirmed Coronavirus diagnosis to inpatients who have been admitted to the hospital with suspected COVID-19 symptoms or distress. Sparrow test results are significantly quicker than the current wait times for testing from the state laboratory, which is currently between 48 and 72 hours. Sparrow reports it now has the capacity to process 60 number of COVID-19 specimens for same-day results, if needed. Sparrow continues to conduct daily screening for Coronavirus symptoms on all Caregivers, Patients and visitors. “Sparrow medical Providers and Caregivers welcome this heightened capability to confirm or rule out the highly viral and contagious risk posed by COVID-19,” said Dr. James E. Richard, DO, director of Sparrow Laboratories. “Patients and their families also

deserve to know what they are facing so they can make important decisions.” On-site testing by hospitals was made possible after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration implemented emergency authorization to develop testing. Once the standards were released to allow on-site testing, Walid Khalife, Ph.D., Director of Scientific Affairs, and the Sparrow Lab staff immediately applied for status and began implementing the steps needed to bring this service to Mid-Michigan. While this service is not currently available for non-hospitalized Patients, Sparrow continues to support the efforts of its providers to collect Coronavirus specimens for confirmation at its outpatient laboratory sites, including a newly established drive-through collection site at its Sparrow Hospital St. Lawrence campus. Those tests will still require confirmation by the state lab. Sparrow Laboratories is among the top 20 busiest hospital labs in the country, processing more than 8 million tests a year.
