† BOUWMAN David Lynn Bouwman, age 38, of Greenville, passed away on Sunday, March

13, 2022. David was born on July 13, 1983, the son of Marvin and Sheilia (Voltz) Bouwman in Grand Rapids. He had a love of hunting and fishing. David is survived by his parents, Marvin and Sheilia Bouwman of Greenville; children, Logan Lake of Ionia, Isaac Bouwman of Lowell and Landen Lake of Ionia; and siblings, Sheila Hanacek of Saranac, Stacy (Chris) Haley of North Carolina, and Rachelle (David) Prins of Saranac. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Mark Hanacek. A Funeral Service will be held at 12 PM Monday, March 21, at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. † FREEMAN Dolores “Midge” (Misner) Freeman age 93 formerly of Lyons Michigan went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 16, 2022. She was born on July 26, 1928, in Ionia, Michigan, the daughter of Gerald and Inez Misner. She married Lemuel (Jess) Freeman on November 14, 1947. Midge worked at Ivan Clark, Trojan Knitting Company and Arden’s Corporation. She was active in her local church teaching in the children’s ministry. She was proceeded in death by her husband Jess Freeman, brothers Frank Misner, Don Misner, Zeke Misner, Art Misner, Dick Misner, Cy Misner and sisters Judy Thorn and Gerry Shellman. Surviving is her daughters Judy (Sam) Wienke from Farwell, Michigan, Louise (Greg) Green from Allegan Michigan and Jan Bailey of Magnolia Texas. Also surviving are six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. There will be a private memorial service for the children and grandchildren. Charles was born on March 14, 1932 in Forest Park, Illinois to the late Charles J. and Levina (Rankin) Marek. He married Mary Lou Burkhart on July 1, 1961 and she survives him. Chuck graduated from Saranac, MI High School in 1950. He worked for General Motors in the Welder Maintenance Department for 40 years and was a member of the U.A.W. He was a member of the American Radio Relay League (Ham radio N8CMG). Chuck was a member of the NHRA Centaurs Hot Rod Club. He had been a Little League baseball coach. Chuck was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served as an usher. Chuck was very proud of all his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Left to cherish Charles’ memory is his wife, of 60 years; his children; Stephen (Connie) Marek of Crestline, Scott (Betty) Marek of Columbus and David (Dorie) Marek of Dayton; five grandchildren; Rebecca (Jonathan) McPhee of Scotland, Jennifer Marek, Christopher Marek, Samuel Marek and Nicholas Marek; great-grandson, Daniel Finn Marek-McPhee; sister, Barbara Wells of Saranac, MI.; and sister-in-law, Lynn Marek. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by sisters Dorothy (Lyle) Denny, Frances (Charles) Hamilton; brother, Robert Marek and brother-in-law, Wayne Wells. Friends may call on Tuesday March 15, 2022 from 4:00 until 7:00PM at the Mark A. Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 223 W. Main St., Crestline. A vigil service will take place at 6:45 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Crestline with Father Jeff Smith officiating. He will be best remembered for his love of outdoors, hunting, fishing and trapping in numerous settings. Evan enjoyed numerous trips, outings and special moments with family and friends that included his love of outdoors. He was his brother Russell’s best friend and his parent’s greatest treasure. Evan was currently enrolled in the Fisheries Wildlife Management program at Lake Superior State pursuing his Bachelor’s degree. Surviving Evan are his Father Robert Richter and Sue Porter of Saranac, Mother Karen (Tom) Powell of Grand Rapids. Twin brother Russell Richter of Grand Rapids. Grandparents; Dwight and June Seiler of Saranac and Doris Richter of Texas. Aunts and Uncles; Ken (Karen) Seiler of Saranac, Kathleen (Jeff) Nickel of Indiana and Michael (Leah) Richter of Texas. House approves Rep. Calley’s measures to strengthen election integrity

Proposals increase transparency, ban unsolicited absentee ballot applications

State Rep. Julie Calley today led the Michigan House in approving two measures to improve the integrity of elections in Michigan. Calley, of Portland, said the legislation adds transparency and accountability by allowing trained poll challengers to observe activities in the offices of clerks on Election Day. A second bill protects against fraud by prohibiting election officials from sending unsolicited absentee ballot applications. “These are two areas where our state election laws should be strengthened to protect against fraud and improve public trust,” said Calley, a member of the House Elections and Ethics Committee. When Proposal 3 was approved by Michigan voters in 2018, it allowed sameday registration of voters – meaning that a voter can now register to vote and cast their ballot on Election Day. Anyone wishing to do so must register and vote at the clerk’s office, not the polling place. “Poll challengers should be allowed anywhere voters are casting ballots,” Calley said. “Now that same-day registration and voting is occurring in local clerks’ offices, we must make sure that challengers are allowed to observe this process.” House Bill 4897 makes it clear that challengers are allowed at clerks’ offices and satellite offices that register voters and dispense ballots. Calley said House Bill 5268 was introduced to clarify state law after Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson took the unprecedented step of sending out unsolicited absentee ballot applications in 2020, creating confusion among voters and local clerks. “This was a poor decision that led to applications addressed to people who had moved or even passed away,” Calley said. “It eroded the public’s trust. “The legislation recognizes the expertise of local clerks and cements their authority to distribute re-

quested absentee ballot applications. No one is better equipped.” House Bills 4897 and 5268 now advance to the Senate for further consideration.

Rep. Calley votes to suspend state gas tax, deliver relief to residents State Rep. Julie Calley and the Michigan House today approved a plan to suspend the state’s tax on gasoline and diesel fuels to provide immediate financial relief to Michigan drivers. Calley, of Portland, said Michigan’s gas and diesel taxes are among the highest in the nation at 27.2 cents per gallon. The plan approved today removes the tax for the next six months. “The rising cost of gas is brutally hard on Michigan families,” Calley said. “This plan will lower gas prices across the board for people who drive to work every day, parents who take their kids to and from school, and seniors on fixed incomes who just need to get around town.” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently called on Congress to support legislation to suspend the federal gas tax.

“There’s no sense in waiting for the federal government to do something, when we have a solution we can move forward with right now at the state level that saves Michiganders money,” Calley said. “With such a large budget surplus this year, we can afford to offer drivers this much-needed relief without impacting budgeted road repairs.” Under the plan approved today, Michigan drivers stand to save approximately $750 million between April 1 and Sept. 30, which is more than they would save from a pause in the smaller federal fuel tax. Giving drivers a break from both fuel taxes would amount to 45-cents per gallon savings. House Bill 5570 now advances to the Senate, where a vote is planned next week to send the measure to the governor’s desk.
