Rep. Calley takes action to make state government transparent, accountable Bipartisan transparency plan approved by House during Sunshine Week
State Rep. Julie Calley today voted to greatly increase the transparency of state government and make state elected officials more accountable to the people they represent. Michigan is one of a very few states that exempts its governor, lieutenant governor and the Legislature from sunshine laws. The bipartisan plan approved by the House today, during Sunshine Week, would remove these exemptions and make state government and its elected leaders more accountable. “This is a good government reform we can all get behind,” said Calley, of Portland. “Regardless of who is serving in the Legislature or the governor’s office, the people of Michigan have a right to know what their elected officials are up to and how public tax dollars are spent. This plan – and the bipartisan way it was developed – sends a clear message that we are determined to increase transparency.” The proposal will subject the Legislature to a new Legislative Open Records Act (LORA) and the governor and lieutenant governor to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA). LORA mirrors FOIA in most ways, but accounts for the unique nature of the Legislature –ensuring the personal information of constituents who seek help from legislators is protected and kept private. Other communications lawmakers have with state departments and lobbyists would be subject to public review. Calley has always been a strong advocate for government transparency, making it a priority while
serving as a state representative and in her previous capacity as an Ionia County commissioner. “My job is to serve as a voice for the people in our communities,” Calley said. “I was happy to comply with open records laws as a county commissioner, and it only makes sense that legislators and the governor’s office would be held to that same high ethical standard.” House Bills 4383-92 now advance to the Senate for further consideration.

† DESGRANGES Aubrey Dean Desgranges, “Bill”, went to heaven to meet Jesus and reunite with his beloved wife and family members on Monday, March 15, 2021, surrounded in his last days by his loving family. Bill was born into the family of John Wesley and Ruth (Rowlader) Desgranges on September 28, 1932 in Lake Odessa. The family spent time growing up in both Lake Odessa and Eaton Rapids, where Bill finished the 10th grade, then worked on the family farm until his induction into the US Army in 1953. After being honorably discharged in 1954, Bill returned home to meet the love of his life, Barbara Ann Sensiba. They were married in April of 1956 and began their 60-year life together. After several years with various jobs including a beloved stint at Lake Odessa Canning Company and Farm Bureau in Lansing, Bill and Barb started the ADDBAD corporation which included organizations such as Lake Odessa Oil Company, Bill’s CITGO gas station, and Morrison Lake Country Club. Bill was a saavy businessman who was an active participator in the Lake Odessa/Lakewood community. He was a volunteer fireman in Lake Odessa, served on the Lake Odessa Fair Board, and was a council member of the Village of Lake Odessa. Bill enjoyed playing cards, golfing, bowling, fishing, and various other activities with his family members and friends. During retirement, Bill and Barb spent 19 years wintering in LaBelle with several of their family members and friends from Lake Odessa. Golf, fishing, and cards were many of the activities enjoyed in their Aqua Isles community in Florida, but his love of his family was his greatest treasure. Bill was preceeded in death by his parents, his loving and caring wife, his siblings Laura (Forest) Haney, Willard (Liz), Paul (Frieda)(Orpha), Lavon (Dorothy), Roger Allen, Clarence (Nancy), Opal (John) Booher, Arloa (Pete) Lee, Elwood, and Glenn (Dee), his in-laws Samuel and Mildred Sensiba, brothers-in-law Ronald, Donnie and Johnnie Sensiba. Bill and his “Miss America” were very proud of their family and legacy here on earth. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his children Darris and Kim Desgranges of Grand Rapids, Denise and Dave Newman of Clarksville, Daniel and Beth Desgranges of Hudsonville, and Derek and Stacie Desgranges of Sunfield. Bill adored his grandchildren and will miss playing cards and eating ice cream with Darrin (Emily) Desgranges, Dylan Desgranges, Matthew (Jodi) Hostetler, Scott (Jordan) Hostetler, Daniel Deuce (Sherry) Desgranges, Samuel Desgranges, Jackson Desgranges, Aubree Desgranges, Lyndan Desgranges, Brady (Megan) McNees, and Logan McNees. Bill was also the proud “Great Papa” of Allison, Anna, Brynn, Bailey, Benton, Owen, Olivia, Norah, Scarlett, and the soon to be Aubrey #3. Bill was very fond of his yellow lab Charlie who was a companion during the years at Morrison Lake Golf Course. Bill is also survived by loving family members Alona Allen, Betty Desgranges, Jude Desgranges, Susan (Gail) Foxworthy, Sandy (Larry) Simon, and many nieces and nephews, including the beloved and favorite niece whose name begins with “B”. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 18th from 6 pm until 8 pm and from 1 pm until 2 pm on Friday, March 19th. Funeral will be held at 2 pm on Friday, March 19th. All visitations and service will be held at Nashville Baptist Church in Nashville with Pastor Lester DeGroot presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you make contributions in Bill’s name to Nashville Baptist Church, VFW Post #4461, or the Lake Odessa Fire Department. The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the employees of Green Acres of Ionia, Hospice of Lansing and Ionia, and Mary Free Bed for the compassionate care they gave to our Dad.
† LEWIS Shirley Jan Lewis age 77 of Hastings, MI passed away March 10, 2021. She was born on August 7, 1943 in Ionia the daughter of John and Beverly (Benner) Jenks. She married Tom Lewis on June 9, 1984 in Hastings. Shirley was a member of Thornapple Valley Church. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing bingo, casinos and traveling with her husband. Judi was born on August 17, 1938 in Ionia, the daughter of Albert and Jane (Steadman) Benedict. On August 26, 1967, she married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Vander Veen. Judi had a love for playing the organ and piano, reading and writing, cooking, traveling and camping. From the time she was 13 until her retirement at age 65 she served as organist and later choir director for the Lyons Methodist Church, Muir Presbyterian Church and Lyons / Muir Church. She was a woman of great faith and instilled and encouraged that faith in countless others throughout her life. Her travels with her husband, Bob, included England, Scotland and Wales, also a year residing in Seoul, South Korea teaching conversational English. Throughout their married life, Judi and Bob’s family enjoyed camping trips from Michigan’s UP to Florida. After retirement, Judi and Bob travelled extensively throughout the southern United States, eventually purchasing a second home in Louisiana. Wherever she went, Judi always made new friends, many of which remained close. Judi had a love of writing, contributing to works on Lyons history, writing a memoir on her experiences in Korea and also other works of fiction. Judi was an avid reader of both classic and modern literature, and committed NY Times cruciverbalist. She is survived by her husband, Bob of Ionia; sons, Jon (Debbie) Vander Veen of Grand Rapids and Derek Vander Veen of Iowa; daughter-in-law, Keli Fell of Rockford; sister, Susan (Stefan) Laxdal of South Carolina; and sister-in-law, Gail Benedict of Woodland; grandchildren, Heather (Ron) Stacey, Zachary Fell (Samantha), Catherine Fell, Colin Vander Veen and Aubrey Vander Veen, many great grandchildren and close friend of the family Deanne Schafer Fell. † MILLER Donald Craig Miller
Born on September 14, 1952 and departed this earth too soon on March 11, 2021. He will be sorely missed by his wife Joella, his son Tony Miller, daughter in-law Billiejo Allen-Miller and Grandson Jordan Allen along with his goddaughter, Kate (John) Buckler. He married Joella Hesche on September 10, 1977. He was preceded in death by his mother, Violet Miller, his father Olen E. Miller, brother Boyer, sister Cindy, and nephew Christopher Thode. He is survived by brothers Olen E Miller, (wife Rita), Ralph E Miller, (wife Sandy), along with nieces & nephews. He also leaves behind a multitude of friends. Don was a burn survivor, injured as a child, and took the word survivor to the full limit hating the term burn victim. He was eternally grateful for his doctors, nurses, and his parents for helping him through the injury. He was an organ and tissue donor, both of which are deeply important to him. He hopes to help other burn survivors recover from their injuries. He loved the Phoenix Society and was grateful to meet and know Amy Acton, chair of the Phoenix Society along with so many others from that part of his world. Dons first job was at Dog & Suds in Lowell and always mentioned his boss and her expectations. He then went to work at Root Lowell, leaving there and starting at Attwood where he made many lifelong friends. He eventually retired from General Motors in Janesville WI in 2008 after 30 years of service. After living in Brodhead WI for 17 years, he left behind his beloved train club, WI Garden Railway Society where he and Joella made many new friends. As was always true with Don, he and Joella made many friends while there living in Wisconsin. ¶ Moving back to Michigan, he slid easily back into his previous life, enjoying time spent with his childhood friends playing cards and camping and Wednesday outings with the guys. Don tried out a variety of retirement jobs, serving as custodian at Brodhead United Methodist Church & Lutheran Churches concurrently. Upon returning to Michigan, he worked for a time for his daughter in law helping trim trees and harassing her. He was a parts delivery man for Showboat Auto and then a custodian at the Lowell United Methodist Church. Retirement jobs helped keep him busy, cleaning, tinkering, and fixing things, always having the need to stay busy and improve the items he worked on. When meeting someone his wife didn’t recognize, she could generally tell what part of his life his friends called him. Childhood and high school friends called him either Donny or Duck. People that he worked with generally called him Don. Really good friends called him Donny. This obituary cannot be closed out without mentioning trains. He loved them all – full sized and small models equally. He and Joella spent many days going to train club meetings, train shops, and train crossing to watch passing trains. He loved the trips to California and Colorado to visit other train enthusiasts and see their layouts and how they constructed their layouts. In 2019, he was thrilled to travel to Wyoming and Utah to see the rebuilt Big Boy engine, the 2014. He had planned that trip for 6 years. Don was always happy playing with G scale trains at his home in Saranac. He had built 3 train layouts, improving each over the layout before. He loved running his trains and spent many contented hours running trains while contemplating how to improve the running and layout. Over the years, Don has attended a variety of churches. He and Joella attended Genesis UMC on Snow Ave. Pastor Tommy Boutell will be helping the family with services. Don was happiest with friends and family, having a few beers and enjoying good food. His family asks that Memorial Donations be made to the Phoenix Society, 525 Ottawa Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503 in lieu of flowers. A Celebration of life will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 27, 2021 at the Steele Street Hall in Ionia. 115 S. Steele St. Ionia. † REPIK Sue Ann Repik age 67 of Lowell, MI passed away March 10, 2021. She was born on January 7, 1954 in Ionia the daughter of Robert and Donna (Bullis) Kilduff. Sue loved spending time with her grandsons and going to all their activities. She also enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Murray Lake as well as watching Nascar, especially Dale Earnhardt. Surviving Sue is her husband, Tom Repik of Lowell; daughters, Kate (Jason) Hardy of Saranac and Kelly (Karl) Pendleton of Lowell; grandsons, Carson Hardy and Caiden Hardy of Saranac; brother Rick (Marcia) Kilduff of Stanton; sister Sally (Dan) Wood of Lyons and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. † STEHLIK John Joseph Stehlik, age 80, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Sunday, March 14, 2021. John was born May 6, 1940 in Owosso, Michigan. He was the youngest son of Frank and Mary Stehlik of Corunna, Michigan. John grew up with his two older brothers - Bob and Dick - and they, along with their father, all had a love of cars and trucks. He graduated from Owosso High School in 1958. He continued his education and proudly earned his Masters Degree from the School of Hard Knocks. He could often be heard saying, “I’m not the smartest guy, but I know how to surround myself with smart people.” On July 2, 1960 he married his high school sweetheart, Rita Hebekeuser. Together they raised a beautiful family of four children: Shawn Merkel (Dave Selleck), Rene Walters, John C. (J.C.) Stehlik (Debbie) and Shannon Lawton. His beautiful family grew with 11 grandchildren including Blake Merkel, Tyler Merkel, Cole Merkel (Nathan Breitenfeldt), Morgan Brown (Patrick), Madelyn Walters (Clay Bowers), Marshall Walters, Emerson Stehlik, Kerrigan Stehlik, Jordyn Michalec (Devin), Alexander Lawton (Tashi Zandstra) and Jacob Lawton. He was then blessed with two great grandchildren Kyan Merkel Cowell and Lily Bloom Bowers. John spent his entire working life in the trucking industry, first as an owner-operator driver for Great Lakes Express and then as an entrepreneur after purchasing Davis Cartage Company in 1975. The trucking industry led him to serve and lead multiple boards, including Chairman of the Regional Distribution Carriers Conference, President of the Michigan Limited Carriers and Member of the Michigan Motor Carrier Enforcement committee. He was also a member of the MPSC Motor Carrier Advisory Board. In 1991, he served as the President of the Michigan Trucking Association. John was also a Member of the Safety and Engineering Committee of the American Trucking Association and served as President of the Shiawassee County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. John was a member of St. Paul Parish in Owosso, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Saranac and Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Naples, Florida. He was also a member of the Owosso Country Club and Windstar Country Club in Naples. John spent most of his retired life enjoying beautiful summers in Michigan and warm winters in Naples and Webster, Florida. His retirement years were full of time spent on his hobbies of fishing, golfing and boating, which he loved. He also enjoyed traveling but most of all loved spending time at the family cottage on Morrison Lake. He said that that best part of being retired was having time to spend summers with his kids and grandkids. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of his family - especially his exceptional grandchildren. Many tributes to John have come from past employees and friends who have often said how inspired they were by his courageous fight with his illness and for enduring blindness later in his life. His positive attitude was infectious and he inspired many. John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rita, his four children, all 11 of his grandchildren and his two great grandchildren, his loving brother Robert (Bob) and sister-in-law Lillian Stehlik, Brother-in-law Edward Hebekeuser and sister-in-law Patti Teichman, along with many adoring nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, brother Richard Stehlik, infant daughter Angela, nephew Robert Stehlik, Jr., and nieces Karen Dasen and Nancy DeVoe. A funeral mass will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, March 18, 2021 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Owosso, MI with Father Michael O`Brien officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia, with a scripture service being held at 6:00 pm at the funeral home in Ionia. 8 tips for dyeing Easter eggs Coloring eggs is a beloved Easter tradition. Eggs long have been symbols of fertility and rebirth, making them fitting icons for spring. One story links eggs to Easter as well. According to some religious scholars, Mary Magdalene, the woman who was the first person to see Jesus Christ after His resurrection, was holding a plain egg in her hand while waiting for the emperor to share the good news. The emperor then told her that Jesus' resurrection was as improbable as that egg suddenly blushing. The egg then turned red. Dyeing eggs is an entertaining activity, but one that also may have some religious significance. Many families will color eggs this Easter, and these guidelines can make
the process go smoothly. · Wait until just before coloring to hard-boil eggs. Good Housekeeping recommends boiling eggs for 11 minutes for a hard boil. Do not chill the eggs afterward; warm eggs absorb color more effectively for more vivid results. · Egg dye can stain furniture, clothing or tablecloths. Therefore, dress in clothing that you're not worried about staining. Also, cover work surfaces with an old tablecloth and newspapers to soak up any spills. · Make a drying rack to ensure that eggs will dry evenly. This can be a rimmed cookie sheet lined with layers of paper towels to absorb any excess dye that runs off the eggs. Or push pins into thick foam board and place the eggs on top to allow air to circulate. · Consider using glass bowls or ceramic mugs to house the colored dye solutions. These vessels are more sturdy than plastic cups, and less likely to be overturned by eager young hands. · Scissor-style tongs are ideal tools for retrieving eggs from the dye.
