– OBITUARIES –

† HINKLE Nancy Anne (Laird) Hinkle, age 65 of Muir, MI passed away Friday, March 1, 2024. She was born on August 20, 1958 in Carson City, MI, the daughter of Dr. John and Emily (Mackenroth) Laird. The family moved to Saranac in 1959 and lived in a great neighborhood full of kids. Nancy graduated from Saranac High School with the class of 1976. On September 14, 1979, she married Steven Hinkle, and they have lived in Ionia and Muir.

Nancy worked as office manager for her father’s medical practice for many years, and later worked at Priority Health in Grand Rapids. She was a fine photographer with her own darkroom, and she professionally photographed weddings and family gatherings. She enjoyed crafting, painting, collecting and skiing, and she arranged many family trips to ski in Colorado while visiting her brother Fred and family.

Surviving is her husband of 44 years, Steve Hinkle of Muir; along with daughters Kaycie (Charles) Smith of Muir and Jessica (Keith) McClure of Ionia; granddaughters Charly Smith and Leyna Smith; step-mother Sybil Laird and her family of Ionia; siblings Margaret (Bruce) Chadwick of Saranac, and Fred (Susan) Laird of Estes Park, CO; brothers-in-law Jim (Judy) Hinkle of Mason, Keith Hinkle of Florida and David (Amy) Hinkle of Mason; several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and classmates. She was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, and her sister Amy Elizabeth Laird.

† MAYBEE Gary Lynn Maybee, age 76, of Lyons, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024. He was born on October 27, 1947, the son of Orville and Betty (Little) Maybee in Alma, MI. On September 4, 1976, he married the love of his life, Frances, they enjoyed 47 years of marriage and together they were blessed with 6 children.

Gary enjoyed golfing, drinking beer, doing football pools, and spending time with friends and family. He was a jokester and loved his family. Gary was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He was a life member of the Lyons VFW post 4646 and a member of the Hubbardston American Legion post 182. He also owned and operated GL Maybee Construction for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Fran; children, Robinn Manista of Berkley, Shelley (James) Lake of McBride, Todd Maybee of Ionia, Luke (Arika) Maybee of Ionia and Charlie (Trina) Fyan of Ionia; sisters, Penny (Ted) Childers of Perrington and Sheila Fields of Carson City; grandchildren, Nolan, Gunnar, Travis, Gage, Owen, Danielle, Mia, Triston, Isabelle, Lukus, Kyona, Dathan, Danika and Kaylynn; and great grandchildren, Ethan, Benny, Michael, Melody, Sawyer and Leighton. Gary is preceded in death by his son, Danny; great granddaughter, Vayda, brother Mike; sisters, Patricia and Liz; and his father. There will be a graveside service held at 12 PM Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Lyons Cemetery. A luncheon will be held following the service at the Portland VFW, Post 4090, 1324 E Bridge St. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home of Muir. - The Ionia County Career Center Student Advisory has demonstrated extraordinary community spirit and generosity through

their recent Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive held from Monday, February 26th to Friday, March 1st. In the drive, aimed at supporting IM Kids 3rd Meal, there was

an overwhelming response from students, resulting in a remarkable collection of 245 jars of peanut butter and 232 jars of jelly.

IM Kids 3rd Meals pro-

vides food insecure children with a nutritious, ready-to-eat meal delivered right to a child’s school at the end of each day to take home for an evening meal ensuring children have access to the healthy food they need to thrive. Meals are provided to schools in Ionia and Montcalm counties.

Celebrate March is Reading Month with us! We have a special challenge for all of our patrons this year: library bingo! Pick up a board from the library starting March 1, complete as many squares as you can during the month, and return it to the library by 8:00 p.m. on April 1. For each bingo (five squares in a row) you earn, you’ll be entered to win a Barnes & Noble gift card! We will have a winner for each of our age categories: Littles, Middles, Teens, and Adults!

On the Same Page Kick-Off

Every year, the Ionia County Library Association presents our “On the Same Page” program, where we attempt to get everyone in the county to read the same book and attend programs related to it. This year’s book is “The House is On Fire” by Rachel Beanland, a beautifully written historical fiction novel that contains a terrible tragedy, an escaped slave, a ragtag troupe of actors, ill-treated women, and much more. The Portland District Library will be kicking off this year’s slate of programs on Wednesday, March 13, when we’ll be giving

away free copies of the book to the first 20 patrons. And stay tuned to this space for a full calendar of “On the Same Page” events!
