† BAKER Marguerite H. Baker age 98 of Ionia passed away March 7, 2020 in Ionia. She was born September 9, 1921 in Portland, MI the daughter of Francis J and Flossie J. (Somerville)Burger. Marguerite married William C. Baker April 18, 1942. He passed away June 17, 2001. She was a member of the Literary Guild and Ionia Hospital Auxiliary. She lived in Detroit Area before moving to Ionia. Marguerite is survived by her sons, Steven Baker of Fenton and Jeff (Kay) Baker of Ionia; Grandchildren Bret (Paula) Baker of Holt and great grandchildren, Jack Baker, Jessica Baker and Luke Baker. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Funeral services were held 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Pastor Nancy Patera officiating. Interment in Tuttle Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday 5-7pm and one hour prior to service on Wednesday at the funeral home. He was a graduate of Greenville High School with the class of 1960 and after college began his career in law enforcement becoming the Chief of Police in Portland, MI. He was one of the youngest chiefs in Ionia County. He retired as Chief of Police in 1998 with 30 years of service. He married Virginia “Ginny” Wright at St. Paul Lutheran Church Greenville on June 21, 1969. Dick was very involved in Portland community activities with the Lions Club, Rotary Club D.A.R.E. program and Boy Scouts. He was an outdoorsman - fishing, hunting and mushrooming- and enjoyed country and gospel music and jamborees. He and his wife loved living on the lake, being involved with his family, his corvettes, attending the Corvette Club, and being a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Sidney. He is survived by his wife, Ginny; daughter, Kelly Housler and her husband, Ed, of Cumming, Georgia; his son, Richard A. White II and wife, Robin; and grandchildren, Katelyn, Corey, Logan and Austin. Visitation will be at 11 AM Monday, March 16, 2020, at Faith Lutheran Church, Sidney with Funeral Services following at 12 O’Clock PM. Private burial in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding, will be held after a luncheon at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Dick’s name be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN. Rep. Julie Calley this week voted in favor of an emergency budget plan to provide disaster relief funding for the city of Portland, invest in workforce training programs and restore support for programs that help some of Michigan’s most vulnerable

A new program called Michigan Reconnect also received funding. It will help adults 25 and older earn a certificate or associate’s degree connected to in-demand skilled trades. “We’re working together to give people more opportunities to train for all of the in-demand jobs that are available in the trades right now,” Calley said. “Our state is expected to have 545,000 job openings in health care, information technology, manufacturing and other skilled trade fields by 2026.” In addition, the measures partially restore funding in a wide
range of areas that the governor vetoed or redirected by her use of the State Administrative Board, including: • $2.2 million for the Centers for Independent Living, which provides high-quality independent living services to people with disabilities. • $300,000 for Algebra Nation, an online algebra tool for students. • $2 million for the Michigan Education Corps, which helps students become proficient in math and reading. • $1 million in support for two long-term shelters for survivors of human trafficking. • $250,000 for the Adoptive Family Support Network to mentor adoptive parents and provide guidance to assist in the adoption process. • $300,000 to provide emergency shelter services to homeless and runaway youth. • $500,000 to provide legal advocacy for children who have been abused or neglected. • $1 million for Child Advocacy Centers, which provide

Renew watercraft registrations online or at a self-service station March is the time of year to renew watercraft registrations and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is urging customers to renew online or at a self-service station. “Renewing online or at a self-service station is convenient and it saves time,” Benson said. “Our new user-friendly self-service stations are getting rave reviews from customers. There are more than 100 of the new stations in place to help you renew your watercraft or vehicle registration in minutes. By April, we should have a total of 150 of them in locations across the state, including many Meijer and Kroger grocery stores.” Michigan residents can check Michigan.gov/SOSSelfService to find a kiosk near them. Customers also may renew online at ExpressSOS.com. The site provides two options for renewing watercraft: An online express option for quick renewals. An online authenticated renewal process, which allows customers to access their
customer record and conduct other transactions along with their watercraft renewal. They also may print a copy of their renewed registration. There are about 892,000 current watercraft registrations on file with the Secretary of State. Nearly 245,000 watercraft renewal notices will be mailed. Watercraft registrations are renewed every three years and expire on March 31 of the third year. All watercraft, including those on privately owned lakes and waterways, must be registered, except for the following: Watercraft 16 feet or less, propelled by oars or paddles that aren’t used for rental or commercial purposes. Nonmotorized canoes and kayaks not used for rental or commercial purposes. Rafts, surfboards, sailboards and swim floats, regardless of length. Watercraft registered in another state and used only temporarily in Michigan.
