OBITUARIES

† SWAIN

Heaven celebrated the arrival of Bonnie Juanita Swain (Weller) on November 2,2024 as she passed away with her loving family present. Bonnie spent most of her life in Ionia but moved to Caledonia to be lovingly cared for over the last two years. Bonnie was 86 years young at the time of her death. Bonnie was born in Port Huron to Serl and Ethel (Hall) on December 8,1937. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and 10 Weller siblings, including Ethel Aeleen, Alvin, George, Bud, Doris, Harold, Frances, Ceylon, Carol and Shirley. Swain family also preceding her in death were Marie and Jack Dehn, Bill and Mary Swain, and Orville Rivers. She was also the widow of Robert “Bob” Swain. Bonnie and Bob married June 1, 1957, and she was a loving and committed wife to him for 58 years. The marriage of Bob and Bonnie created the family of Kathy North, Steve (Jodi) Swain, Tim (Irma) Swain and Linda (Barry) Bussell. The children and her one remaining sister, Nancy, survive her, as well as her sisters-in-law, Gracie Weller and Bernice Rivers. Bonnie is also lucky to have many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews left to cherish her memory. Grandma Bonnie was known and loved by her grandchildren: Dane and Danny (Karli) North, Hunter Swain, Gabriela Swain, Timothy Swain II and Tanner Sommers. Great Grandma Bonnie also had Brinsleigh and Teneson Swain to share her love and affection.

Bonnie has never met a stranger. She worked many jobs in her life and was likely best known for her service as a greeter at the local Meijer. She had the gift of socialization and made many people smile throughout her days.

Bonnie had an unmatched love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She shared that love and faith with everyone. Bonnie was a prayer warrior and true intercessor. She prayed for everyone and everything and felt the movement of the Holy Spirit through her words. Many people benefited from her strong faith.

Bonnie was well known in her hometown of Ionia and was very involved in area churches and her local TOPs group. A hearty ‘Hallelujah’ or ‘Amen’ could be heard when she received a powerful sermon. Bonnie was also musically inclined. At a young age she and her sister Carol sang and entertained as the Weller Sisters. She continued with that gift and sang in churches, jamborees and other local settings. Bonnie could play her guitar and lift her voice like no one else.

Bonnie never wanted her funeral services to be a somber event as she was ready to be with Jesus. Attendees honored her request by wearing bright colors to celebrate her life.

Funeral services for Bonnie were held at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Thursday, November 7th at 11:00 AM with Pastor Cody Kuehl officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation was on Wednesday, November 6 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and 5:00 to 7:00 pm with a one-hour visit prior to services. In Lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Bonnie’s name to Grand Rapids Church at 4525 Stauffer Ave SE. Grand Rapids, MI 49508. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com

† MCCLANAHAN

Angela ”Angie” Jean McClanahan, 48, of Muir, Michigan, passed away on November 6, 2024, after a battle with cancer. Angie was born on October 15, 1976, to David and Debbie (Whisman) McClanahan and grew up in Hamersville, Ohio. In 2000, Angie moved to Michigan, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Angie was known for her love of Monster energy drinks, her tattoo work and tattoo shops, and the love she had for her friends and family. She had a heart like no other and made sure to always tell everyone she loved them. If you spent more than 5 minutes with Angie, you knew that April 30, 2011, was the best day of her life; the day her son Ethan was born. Angie’s pride and joy was Ethan, and she made sure that everyone knew it. She enjoyed doing tattoos, spending time with her family and friends, spending long nights at the tattoo shop, and would often be found in the kitchen making her famous fried chicken. She was well known as “The Tattoo Lady”. Even if Angie didn’t know you very well, she would always say her famous line “text me when you make it home safe” – and that basically sums up the kind of person she was.

Angie is survived by her mother Debbie (Tom) Whisman; her son, Ethan McClanahan; her stepchildren Zack Duby, Lexi (Garritt) Hall, and Ali Duby; grandchildren Marleigh, Aaliyah, and 2 grandsons on the way; special friends Mary and Colt Herroon, Katalina Brickey, Xavier Jeffrey, and so many more; and her fur baby Grr. She was proceeded in death by her father David McClanahan; her brother David McClanahan Jr.; her beloved fur babies Shaq and Raynee; and her very special family friend Vickie Ramirez. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date. Any donations to help the family with the costs of cremation can be made to Lake Funeral Home in Ionia, Michigan or be donated at https:// gofund.me/7fa730ee and anything extra will go to her son, Ethan.

Healthy holiday recipe swaps

Although presents garner most of the fanfare during the holiday season, there is no denying that food and entertaining also figure prominently this time of year. Delish magazine reports that Christmas food consumption ranks third, behind Thanksgiving and Super Bowl Sunday, among Americans, and that a single Christmas meal can weigh in at 3,000 calories, not factoring in any other food consumed that day.

No one wants to feel held back while having fun with family and friends, but smart food choices can mean healthier living during this season of festivities. Dish up these alternatives when holiday entertaining.

• Lean on leaner cuts of meat. A strong body is built on protein, and holiday hosts often make a meat or poultry dish the star of the holiday dinner table. When selecting holiday fare, choose leaner options such as “round” or “loin” roasts; otherwise, select white-fleshed fish and skinless poultry in lieu of other options.

• Use broths instead of creams. Soups and gravies are popular this time of year, and both can be made healthier by opting for stock or broth bases over more fattening milks or creams when creating these recipes.

• Create a one-crust pie. Pie is one of the more popular

holiday desserts, and plenty of the calories come from a rich, buttery crust. Lighten up by serving a one-crust pie, such as pumpkin or sweet potato. Fruit-based pies like apple or blueberry also can be made with one crust. Simply top the fruit with a light crumb coating.

• Find ways to incorporate vegetables. Vegetables are low in calories and rich in vitamins and nutrients. Many also are high in fiber, so they can help people avoid overeating. According to dietary experts from the American Heart Association, people should aim for four to five servings of vegetables each day. When making a plate, fill half of the plate with vegetables. Enhance dishes like lasagna or other pastas with fresh vegetables as well.

• Skip the fried bird. Although deep-frying a turkey can reduce cooking time, frying historically is not the best cooking method for those who are making health-conscious choices. Rather than frying, consider spatchcocking (also known as butterflying) the turkey to enable it to cook faster. Use fresh herbs and seasonings instead of butter and oil to flavor your turkey as well.

• Skip the cocktails. The Center for Science in the Public Interest says that classic cocktails with little to no added sugar typically fall into

the 150- to 200-calorie range, while others can be about 200 to 300 calories each. Many people will want to save those extra calories for dessert or another indulgent dish rather than drinking them away. If you want to simulate a cocktail,

make a spritzer with sparkling water and unsweetened cranberry juice.

Celebrants can make some smart choices in the foods and beverages they eat to enjoy a healthier holiday season this December. HL24A327

Holiday spending projections

The holiday season tends to be the busiest for retail sales, and going by how shoppers opened their wallets during the 2023 season, many are wondering if 2024 will be another banner season for retailers. Last year, the average consumer spent around $1,530 on gifts and other needs for the holidays, according to Mailmodo. The United States Department of Commerce indicated retail sales grew 4.1 percent year over year in November 2023. Industry forecasters have made a few predictions for the 2024 holiday spending season, and these are some key takeaways.

· As retailers learn more about

consumers preferences for personalized offers, shoppers may find finely tuned discounts and offers showing up in their emails or text messages.

· Forty-three percent of consumers are carrying more debt now than in 2023 because they are reliant on their consumer credit cards more than ever. Expect to see more “buy now, pay later” deals by retailers to lure in customers.

· Salesforce research says consumers will continue to utilize the convenience of online shopping on Black Friday, blurring the lines between that popular retail holiday and Cyber Monday. GG249246
