Boston-SaranacHistoricalSociety
“SARANAC HOT-ROD WINS ON SUNDAY” That was the headline announcing that Tom Daley of Saranac came in first place for the 100-lap feature race. The date? Sunday, July 27th. The year? 1952. The place? Now this is where it gets interesting – SARANAC SPEEDBOWL.
Yes, Saranac had a local racetrack back in the 1950s and 60s, just to the south of the village proper, where Vosper Street turns into Weeks Road. There is little evidence of the entrance road to what at one time could draw
in some 2,000 spectators and their cars. People would park on the hills surrounding the dirt track that was at the bottom of the natural depression, to watch the weekly stock car race. Stock car racing is said to have originated during the US Prohibition period (1919-1933) when illegal still operators needed to get their “moonshine” to their buyers. They used their private cars to transport the liquor but had altered and fine tuned them to outrun normal passenger cars.
As you can imagine, driving these
high-performance cars was pretty fun and even before Prohibition ended in 1933, racing these vehicles on makeshift dirt tracks became quite popular.

Think of it, by the 1950s new cars were still in short supply as Detroit automakers were still in the process of converting factories back to building passenger cars from the military equipment produced during WWII. So, what to do? You kept your old car in running order, maybe improve its handling and speed. These were models where you could readily work on a car engine, before all the electronics and safety features were added. A basic combustion engine that could make a lot of noise, fishtail into a sharp corner, do a 360 spin and come out straight. Dust flying, brakes pumping since you wouldn’t want to lock up your wheels and lose control. That’s just when there is you and the road, playing around. Now, add in other drivers and their souped-up rides. As in the beginning, so it is that the number one rule of stock car racing is to learn how to wreck someone without wrecking yourself.
Lyle Denny, Jr. of Saranac remembers being 7 years old and heading
to the Saranac racetrack every Sunday morning with his dad, Lyle Denny, Sr. to set up the sound system for that day’s race. The trees surrounding the “bowl” were used as the poles from which the speakers were mounted. He added that he thought a more appropriate name for the “Speedbowl” might have been “Dust Bowl” as water was in short supply.
Never short on excitement, I bet if you were to find that old racetrack and simply stood and listened, remnants of those racing victories and losses, the car crashes and the dust and engine noise, and sound of gears shifting, and brakes seizing, might drift in on the wind. Another time, and as my own dad used to tell me, “Keep it between the fence posts!” Follow us on Facebook ™ /Saranac Depot
