Lucas “Luke” Coon, aged 27 of Lyons, passed away unexpectedly Aug 29, 2024. Luke was born December 27, 1996, the son of David W. and Linda J. (Ferris) Coon.
– OBITUARIES AND AREA DEATHS –
Luke is survived by his loving wife Niki Coon of Lyons: sons Weston and Jacob Coon; brother Zack Coon (Ashleigh Jackson) and sister Laura (Ethan) Bowman and nephew Mason of Rockford. He is also survived by his grandmother Ardist Ferris of Lyons and grandfather Ken Coon of Lyons; Aunt Sue Ferris, cousins Shane (Grace) Ferris and Cheyenne Ferris and Uncle Roger (Kelly) Ferris. Luke had many wonderful friends in his life including special best friends Wyatt & Molly, Dillon, Charlie & Kelli and Emmett & Nicole.
Luke was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature, hunting, fishing and trapping. He was forever barefoot to keep his connection to earth as it grounded him, and as he grounded us. He found happiness in providing for the ones he loved. He could and did do everything he put his mind to. He was a gentle giant, teddy bear of a man that would give anyone the shirt off his back or a mouthful of words to anyone that needed that as well.
Luke married the love of his life, soul twin and Middle School sweetheart, Niki in 2020 on their 10th anniversary. They had an inexplicable love and commitment like no other.
Luke’s absolute pride and joy were his boys, Weston and Jacob. Nothing made him happier than loving them. He was a busy dad teaching them daily about love and life. He loved to teach them about nature and to hunt and fish.
Luke had empathy and understanding well beyond his years, full of knowledge, skills and advice that would surprise and amaze you. Luke was a special soul that will be missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him.

NEWS FROM THE DEPOT
Boston-SaranacHistoricalSociety
The Grand River. Pretty integral when defining the village of Saranac – past and present. You will find the name across the entire state of Michigan, waterways and roadways.
The Grand is a 252-mile-long river across the Lower Peninsula, and is the longest river in the state, starting out in Hillsdale County to the south of Jackson, MI, and heading in a generally northwesterly direction through several cities, including Jackson, Lansing, Ionia, “Saranac”, Grand Rapids, and to the river’s mouth at Lake Michigan
in the city of Grand Haven. In the early years of settling Michigan, the Grand River was one of the fastest ways to move west – albeit after the initial trek inland.
When Michigan was settled as part of the “Great Westward Expansion,” (early 1800s) it was not as easy to head west across our state as it had been for the settlers to come as far as Detroit.
“Back east,” they started out with somewhat established roadways, canal systems, trains, and boats. Whereas it was basically trails and rutted pathways through the
dense forests, across marshlands and swamps moving west from Detroit.
During the 1830s and ‘40s, settlers traveled west out of Detroit to the Grand River waterways using Native American trails. These trails were originally narrow paths that were only about 12 to 18 inches wide. Once these trails were gradually improved, it became a major route and as a reflection of its importance, was named the “Grand River Trail.” New settlements were created along the route, every six miles or so, that distance being a good day’s travel by horse.
Around 1850, two “plank” roads were built connecting Detroit and Lansing, and was known as the “Grand River Road.” (NOTE: A “plank” road is a road composed of wooden planks or logs for crossing soft or marshy ground.) This was a toll road (a road that charges a fee or toll) until the 1880s, and eventually evolved into the eastern part of the modern “Grand River Avenue.” By 1900, most of these “plank” roads had been converted to gravel, and by 1913 the Michigan Legislature had plans to create the original state highway system. As part of the act, Grand River Avenue between Detroit and Grand Rapids was included, and signposts (starting in 1919) with the M-16 name
were placed along Grand River Avenue, across the state, between Grand Haven and Detroit. The M-16 designation lasted for several years, as states were meeting to plan the “United States Numbered Highway System.” By 1926, Grand River Avenue and M-16 became part of US-16 highway system. When 1957 arrived, approval for further upgrades to these roadways came with a recommended
numbering plan for the interstates showing I-96 following the US-16 corridor. By 1962, motorists were able to bypass the old Grand River Avenue route, at which time the US-16 designations were decommissioned. After US-16 was transferred to the new freeway, Grand River Avenue lost its state highway status along most of its length…but remains a scenic route through one of Michigan’s most
populated corridors.
The Grand River, Grand River Trail (1830s), Grand River Road (1850s), Grand River Avenue (1900s), M-16 (1919), US-16 (1926), I-96 (1960s) …. what was it that William Shakespeare said, “A rose by any other name…”

100 Years Ago This Month: Historical events from September 1924
The month of September has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in September 1924.
• John Dillinger, who would ultimately be identified as the mastermind behind a gang accused of robbing 24 banks and four police stations, attempts to rob a grocery store in Indiana on September 6. The attempt marked Dillinger’s first attempt at a major crime, but he and his accomplice are quickly apprehended and sent to jail.
• Twenty people, including four police officers, are killed during a gun battle in the American territory of Hawaii on September 9. The Hanapepe massacre stemmed from a dispute amongst striking workers at the McBryde sugar plantation on the island of Kauai.
• The sensational trial of Nathan F. Leopold, Jr. and Richard Albert Loeb ends on September 10. Each man is sentenced to life plus 99 years for the kidnapping and murder of Bobby Franks in May.
• Pengiran Ahmad Tajuddin becomes the new Sultan of Brunei on September 11. Ahmad Tajuddin serves until his death in 1950.
• Thomas Wade Landry is born in Mission, Texas, on September 11. Landry would become the first head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League, a job he held for 29 seasons.
• General of the Armies John J. Pershing retires from the United States Army on September 13. The highly decorated General Pershing is the last American military officer to achieve the rank of a six-star general.
• Horace Saks and Bernard Gimbel open the luxury department store Saks Fifth Avenue at 611 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on September 15.
• First baseman Jim Bottomley of the St. Louis Cardinals sets a major league record when he drives in 12 runs in a nine-inning game on September 16. The record still stands, though Bottomley now shares it with a fellow St. Louis Cardinal, Mark Whiten, who drove in 12 runs against the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of a doubleheader on September 7, 1993.
• On September 18, the United States military occupation of the Dominican Republic ends after more than eight years.
• Joseph Stalin orders the arrest of Alexander Krasnoshchyokov on
September 19. Krasnoshchyokov is the first prominent Bolshevik to be arrested under the leadership of Stalin, who ultimately allows Krasnoshchyokov to rejoin the government in 1925. That second chance would prove somewhat brief, as Stalin would order Krasnoshchyokov’s execution in 1937.
• The American freighter SS Clifton sinks in Lake Huron on September 22. All 26 crew members perish, and the wreckage of the Clifton would not be found
until 2016.
• British racer Malcolm Campbell breaks the record for the fastest speed on land on September 24. Campbell, driving a Sunbeam 350HP with a V12 engine, reaches a speed of 146.18 miles per hour, narrowly breaking the record set by Ernest Eldridge just months earlier.
• Controls on the German Navy are relaxed on September 30 in recognition of improved relations between the Allied Powers and Germany. TF249298
