NATIONAL DIRECTOR AND CO-FOUNDER OF MIJENTE
Dear Adelante Awards Guests, Thank you for supporting InnerCity Struggle’s 2021 Adelante Awards celebrating 27 years of movement building in the Eastside of Los Angeles. This year’s dinner is about the spirit of Adelante. It is about our collective path forward for a just recovery for the Eastside. Because despite so much pain and suffering of the past two years, I am hopeful. During one of the most difficult times in modern history, the Eastside came together to take care of each other. Our organizers distributed more than $500,000 in mutual aid and emergency resources to Eastside families and students. We connected more than 1,500 Eastside residents to COVID-19 related resources and vaccination appointments. Our organizers worked tirelessly to ensure that in the time that so many of us felt isolated as we sheltered in our homes, Eastside families could connect with each other to fight for structural change and demand a just recovery. In our schools, we won two important budget victories to bring equitable resources to students in highest need. As part of a Black and Brown coalition, our leaders secured nearly $100 million to support Black student achievement in LAUSD. And to address the impact of the pandemic on our students, our leaders secured $700 million to be invested into LA’s highest need schools. At the city level, as part of a broad coalition, we won $170 million in the LA City budget to support the communities hardest hit by the pandemic. Tonight we honor two leaders that have been on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Esteban E. Torres Award, we honor St John’s Well Child and Family Center for being a first responder with contact tracing, vaccination clinics, and treatment for symptomatic patients. With the Gabriela Amanda Pérez Award, we honor Marisa Franco, Director and Co-Founder of Mijente, which has been on the ground and successfully led voter engagement efforts for the 2020 national election, fighting against deportations and for just immigration reform. Thank you for supporting grassroots leaders on the frontlines advancing justice and equity. Siempre Adelante, Maria Brenes Executive Director
MASTER OF CEREMONIES
CE CE VA LE N CI A With more than 15 years experience in the entertainment industry, Cece Valencia began her radio career at Wild 96.1 in the Inland Empire. She then made her way to Hot 97.5 in Las Vegas where she spent five years as #1 at “nights in the market” and top five in the country. Returning back to Los Angeles, she did morning’s at 93.5 KDAY and voiced the popular game Grand Theft Auto 5. Eventually, Cece made her way to Latino 96.3 to expand her listening audience and worked for Jennifer Lopez’s network NUVOtv on the music driven show “The Collective.” Cece is driven by the LA Culture Of Hip Hop, which led to her return to the legendary 93.5 KDAY in 2013 to dominate middays. In 2018, Cece’s hard work and community ties caught the eye of Power 106 where she did mornings. She made history as the first woman in hip hop radio history to lead a morning show in Los Angeles for the legendary 93.5 KDAY. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Los Angeles needed a caring familiar voice to carry them through confusing times, so KDAY expanded Cece’s role from Morning Show to Middays. Cece Valencia is the only Los Angeles radio personality that can be heard from 6am-2pm daily giving LA exactly what they need -- someone who loves the city and is just as invested in the community as they are. Cece continues to inspire others using her platform to encourage education and self love to the community.
ENTERTAINMENT BU YE P O NGO The five person Afro-Latin fusion group Buyepongo from Los Angeles absorbs hip-hop, punk, funk, and jazz sounds into a delirious tropical blend of styles from across the Latin American diaspora. The name Buyepongo which translates “to provide a ruckus”– certainly describes the scene on the dance floors of Los Angeles whenever the band launches into its dizzyingly energetic, instantly infectious rhythms. Like its name, the band is part hybrid, part invention, something untranslatable that nevertheless perfectly captures its uniquely vibrant spirit. Buyepongo has shared the stage with acts such as Miguel, Dolla Sign, Warren G, Common, ChicanoBatman, Quantic, Ondatropica, Ozomatli, Booker T, Celso Piña, Os Mutantes, Sister Nancy, Dead Prez, CutChemist, Beatnuts, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Antibalas, and Punta Cartel. They have performed in
venues and festivals at El Rey Theater, Grand Performances, World Cafe Philadelphia PA, KEXP, The Fillmore, Tropicalia Music Festival, Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival, Grand Park, Levitt Pavillion’s Summer Music Series, International Accordion festival, and the SXSW Official Showcase 2015. In 2018, Buyepongo were chosen as Official Cultural Ambassadors for the United States. They toured through mainland China in 2018, Azerbaijan in 2019 and Equatorial Guinea in 2020.

THE SPIRIT OF STRUGGLE AWARDS InnerCity Struggle is proud to honor the work of tonight’s honorees for continuing the legacy of The Spirit of Struggle Awards. These awards are named after distinguished historic individuals who strived for freedom and opportunity.
ESTE BAN E . TO RRES Congressman Esteban E. Torres is a nationally recognized environmental leader and former ambassador to the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He served eight terms as congressman representing California’s 34th Congressional District from 1983-1999. During his distinguished 16year career in the U.S. House of Representatives, Mr. Torres served as Deputy Democratic Whip, senior member of the House Banking Committee, and chaired the House Banking Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs and Coinage. In his own community, Mr. Torres served as a United Auto Workers union organizer and co-founded The East Los
Angeles Community Union (TELACU), which evolved into one of the largest anti-poverty community development organizations in the nation and serves thousands of families. Mr. Torres graduated from James A. Garfield High School in 1949, attended East Los Angeles College, Cal-State Los Angeles, the University of Maryland and American University in Washington D.C. He holds honorary doctorate degrees from Whittier College and National University. Due to his contributions to the Eastside, Esteban E. Torres High School -- the first new high school to be built in unincorporated East Los Angeles in over 85 years -- is named in his honor.
G A BRI E LA AMA N DA PÉR EZ Gabriela Amanda Pérez began her work at InnerCity Struggle at the age of 15 – a spunky and energetic young person who loved punk rock and was known as a good friend. As a student at Garfield High School, one of the most overcrowded schools in the country, Gabriela dedicated her high school years and young adult life to the struggle for educational justice. She advocated for more resources in the schools, an end to punitive school policies, the hiring of more counselors and teachers, as well as advocating for higher expectations for all students by leading the campaign to ensure college access. In 2004, while still a student at Garfield High School, she led the fight to win a new high school in East Los Angeles, the first in over 85 years. Even though she knew that she would not directly benefit from the new school, since it would open after she graduated, she felt passionately about providing the future generations of youth in East Los Angeles with better opportunities to graduate high school and attend a four-year university. She collected petition signatures in support of
the new school and spoke in front of the school board demanding that the Eastside be made a priority. She inspired fellow students and community residents to become involved in marches and rallies in favor of the new school. Through her leadership and perseverance – Esteban E. Torres High School opened in 2010 – a symbol of hope and opportunity for the Eastside. After graduating from high school in 2005, Gabriela went on to undergraduate studies at Long Beach State University. In 2007, Gabriela returned to InnerCity Struggle as part of the staff team. She was an amazing organizer who activated youth, built a base, and inspired a new generation of students from the Eastside. Gabriela passed away suddenly on July 27, 2011 and is remembered as an amazing youth leader that left a long-lasting imprint on her community.

In 2021, St. John’s opened 26 vaccination sites and launched the largest vaccination campaign by a community health center in the country. To date, St. John’s has administered 275,000 doses and counting. 94% of those vaccinated are low-income people of color.

Expanded Housing Protections for Los Angeles County Families The Keep LA Housed Coalition successfully won an expansion on the moratorium on evictions for Los Angeles residents to September 30th of this year.
