ISSUE 3 – THE ART OF ISOLATION As Covid-19 continues to reshape the world as we know it and we roll into our seventh week of lock down, we begin to ask ourselves, are we making the most of all this time stuck at home? Should we be getting more creative? We know that everything that what was once considered normal has been thrown out the window so is it time for us to open our eyes to new experiences that we may not have considered in the past?

There is a tradition in theatre that whenever it lies empty, one light is left on – the reason being that people will return. With weeks turning into months, creativity and connectivity is proving essential to sustain and unite people during this global pandemic. Luckily for us, in the face of adversity comes a characteristically creative response from the world of arts and culture, and so those lights have become blazing beacons of hope.

Institutions, museums, theatres, musicians, actors, comedians and artists across the globe have searched for imaginative solutions to bring people entertainment, inspiration and a little solace from the confinement of their own homes. From livestreaming A Night at the Opera to Theatre on Demand, World Heritage Site tours to live daily cooking lessons with Michelin Star Chefs, never before have we had so many amazing resources at our fingertips (literally!).

Inside Issue 3, we invite you to attend incredible performances at New York’s Met Opera House, take a trip to Broadway (from the comfort of your sofa) or explore some of the world’s most iconic landmarks without the requirement of any travel plans. To top that off we bring you one of the most inspired art projects creating big waves on social media, that sees people all around the world putting their creative skills to good use to recreate their favourite masterpieces.

Our events are an integral part of our community life, an opportunity for our members to learn, grow and develop personally and professionally. From financial advice to fitness and well-being, our objective is to support and inspire our members.

Adapting to the current situation, we took our events online in order to be able to support our community remotely, give back, and create a positive online experience. Each week we are bringing you a range of “Iconic Virtual Events” through our social media platforms. This means, we are now extending our events to our online and social community.

Events cover a broad range of interests under our category themes; we have something to suit the fitness fanatic to the continuously curious.

Whilst schools remain closed for the foreseeable future, a new online school looks set to host classes kids will never want to miss thanks to living legend David Attenborough who has been confirmed as the Geography teacher for BBC’s new online classes for kids. Attenborough will be joined by other well-known stars like Brian Cox who will teach science and John Boyega who will teach English lessons.

Little Britain star Matt Lucas will host a new entertainment show written

by Harry Hill, focused on keeping the public smiling during coronavirus lockdown. The specially created new programme will feature comedic sketches with fellow comedians, sports stars and TV personalities as well as interviews with key workers on the frontline in the battle against Covid-19.

Starting on Sunday 26 April, Lucas and his guests will broadcast from their homes over a six-part series.

ONLINE CLASSES Nikon Photography School In order to empower creators in these uncertain times, camera makers Nikon are doing their bit to help creators stay ‘inspired, engaged and developing’ through a series of online photography classes. To encourage people to stay positive and better themselves during these crazy times, they are providing all of their courses for free for a limited period.

ONLINE COOKERY With Michelin star chef Massimo Bottura

Already demolished that stack of novels on your bedside table? Good news - you can now access more than a million books for free as part of a ‘National Emergency Library’.

Massimo Bottura The Michelin-starred chef is energetic as ever, and just the jolt of optimism we need right now. While some in isolation are turning to takeaways, others are using the time at home to jump into their own kitchens.

Bottura wants to help with a nightly, FREE cooking series on his Instagram.

The Internet Archive, a non-profit organisation, has removed waiting lists from its library of digitised books and other materials donated by libraries and universities worldwide. From classic novels to rare academic textbooks, the collection is designed to help students struggling with remote learning and readers deprived of access to local libraries.

Some of the most viewed works right now include the likes of ‘Call Me By Your Name’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘Dr Seuss’s ABC’.

The library will close on June 30 or at the end of the Covid Emergency.

Well now’s the time to have a go at creating your own masterpiece, thanks to Isolation Art School. Take part in online art projects, enjoy live-streamed lessons and get tips on how to help unleash your inner creative.
