BEARING THAT IN MIND, THE TEAM AT BRABBU HAS LOOKED TO NATURE FOR INSPIRATION WHEN DESIGNING ITS FABULOUS NEW SUMMER COLLECTION. Bringing the outside inside has resulted in some thoroughly creative and inspiring pieces, which will be perfect for those of us on the Costa del Sol, for whom summer is simply the best season of the year – and the time at which we are at our most sociable. To put it simply, the warmer weather encourages us to put our houses on show more often, as we plan dinner parties and barbecues and draw up guest lists.

The Brabbu team has drawn inspiration from the philosophy of organic architect, Eric Corey Freed who claimed that, “Using Nature as our basis for design, design must grow, as Nature grows, from the inside out.” Following his lead, these new wonderful new pieces of furniture will add a welcome touch of nature to the most modern, minimalist home. The striking shape of the CAY side table has been inspired by the shifting forms of molten lava, while the Maree sofa brings to mind a landscape softened by the gentle undulation of waves. We especially loved the wonderful APIS dining table, which brings to mind the trunk of a massive, ancient tree, especially when it was teamed with the SAKI pendant light, which made us imagine a bamboo forest.

HOUSE PROJECT by Päivi Halt WHEN INTERIOR ARCHITECT PÄIVI HALT’S FAMILY MOVED TO SOUTHERN SPAIN SHE FOUND THE IDEAL PROPERTY TO TURN HER DREAM OF A VILLA IN TUSCANY INTO AN IDEAL SPANISH HOME. HERE SHE CHARTS HER EXCITING JOURNEY FROM FINDING THE PERFECT PROPERTY THROUGH TURNING IT INTO A FAMILY RESIDENCE THAT TICKS ALL THE BOXES. A DEMOLITION JOB! This week has been an amazing start to our project. On Monday afternoon the house started to look more orange than red. Every corner was full of guys with orange vests carrying furniture to the storage or to the skip. Already, on the same day, the house started to look very empty. On Tuesday the walls of the master bedroom were down (I’ll explain my plan there later) and by Wednesday the kitchen walls had disappeared. So what is all that talk about mañanaworkmen? If the guys continue at this speed, I’ll be the one struggling seriously with the timetable for finding my fixed furniture! Inevitably, I’ve had to rethink some ideas. The fireplace chimney only reached the next floor and in the master bedroom it changed into a rectangular shaped duct made of bricks. We decided not try to fix the chimney, but replace it and renew the old fireplace.

Quite often it’s much cheaper to build a new one than repair the old. And this is true with houses too, but hopefully not in our case. We also opened the exterior wall to see how the house had been built. The walls are made of two brick walls with a good gap in the middle. This is the correct way to built here I was told, because it prevents damp. I can believe it as the air inside the house has always been very fresh and rooms never too cold. So it must work as a good insulation too!


IDEAS

MY DINING ROOM DESIGNS Between the kitchen and living room there is a dining room. It’s a good size room with beautiful Andalucian floor tiles. This room, together with the living room, really only needs white paint. I’m also going to remove the glass doors in the living and dining rooms that are facing the corridor beside the courtyard. This way the whole house will feel more opened up and the flow between the rooms will be much better and all the rooms will be connected. The only question here is - what shall we do with the extra space? The real change in the dining room will be the atmosphere.

Our dinner table is always full of computers, piles of paper, the kids’ homework and at the moment there’s even a sewing machine as my daughter has started a new hobby. I have this picture in my mind of a clean, clear, white dining room with only a couple of very well chosen pieces of decoration. But, how to make it happen in reality is a challenge? First of all, we’ll have an office and it’s going to be downstairs. So, let’s see how much time I’ll spend there. For sure the sewing machine will be moved into the office and so will the kids homework. My plan then is that the dining room furniture will simply consist of a large table with comfortable chairs and maybe a nice side table to add the decoration. The perfect living room

When it comes to furnishing a dining room, it is always a challenge. How do you decorate a dining room so it’s cosy enough to be used every day and fancy enough to be changed into a setting for a dinner party? For me it’s important that all rooms are used every day. Your house shouldn’t be designed just for visitors. In our family, the dining room is also frequently used as an office. But now, I’m getting tired of trying to keep it tidy.

All these years I’ve been fighting against modern, simple Scandinavian architecture and design in our house in Finland. But here we are and the only design style that I can see in our house here in Spain is very white and natural spiced up with Spanish or Moroccon decorations and textiles. UTOPIA - 93


Simplicity is the ultimate form of Sophistication

Clean, but comfortable, and enough patterns and colours to hide stains! In the living room I can see us as a family sitting around the fireplace with the dogs snoring on the sofa. I would like to create a space where we can relax without TV. TV in our family is only used for watching movies, drama series and playing games. So, instead of adding that big black box into the living room, I’d rather have the TV room somewhere else, where you can have a good sound system and sound insulation too. We have spent many evenings in the living room together, but still all doing our own thing with phones or iPads. It sounds a bit sad, but then again, we are together and sharing the things that we see and do. So, instead of my husband replying to work emails, me searching for nice interior pictures, my daughter chatting on Instagram and my son playing Minecraft, but all in our own rooms, I’d rather create the space where we can do all these things together. I also strongly believe that it’s very important to have the children near us when they use these new devices and go on the Internet. Then you can keep an eye on them and you are nearby to advise them as well. The question that arises here is, what is the purpose of the living room today? Will it be just an empty, nice looking room, if you dare to move the TV away? Also, because the weather here is so good, I’m also wondering how much we will use the living room in the end? What kind of UTOPIA - 94

living room areas will we have outdoors? When it’s very hot, will we prefer to stay inside or sit outside in the shade? When we’re finally living in our new house, I’ll let you know if we use the living room at all! Next time I’ll show you my plans for the bathrooms, the first floor and the master bedroom suite. TABLES ARE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR LIVES. A TABLE MAY BE THE EXTRAVAGANT CENTREPIECE OF A GRAND DINING ROOM OR IT MAY BE A MORE HUMBLE KITCHEN TABLE FOR EVERYDAY DINING THAT WE ALSO USE TO SPREAD OUT OUR WORK, THE KIDS’ HOMEWORK, GAMES, SEWING AND AN ASSORTMENT OF OTHER THINGS THAT IT TYPICALLY BECOMES A REPOSITORY FOR. But the tables designed by Lisbon-based designer Marco Sousa Santos are works of art and expert craftsmanship that deserve to be the highlight of any room they are in and never overlooked. As a designer, Sousa is firmly rooted in the generation of new Portuguese designers who have built a strong international reputation for the country’s contemporary design styles. His projects and products have been displayed in the world’s top institutions such as the V&A in London, MOMA store in

New York, the Triennale in Milan and Salon de Meuble in Paris. He is also a Professor of Industrial Design at the faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon and has forged a number of dynamic partnerships with other Portuguese designers to produce his brand new Branca-Lisboa furniture label, of which his tables are among the highlights.

SEMBA ON THE OTHER HAND IS CLEARLY INFLUENCED BY THE TRADITIONAL AFRICAN DJEMBE DRUM AND SOUSA’S INTERPRETATION REFLECTS THE ETHNIC ART ELEMENTS OF THE ORIGINAL DRUM IN A REFINED AND CONTEMPORARY WAY. UTOPIA - 100

Sousa’s Melody table undoubtedly nods its head to the Cubist movement formed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque with its asymmetrical planes that recall the movement’s attempt to capture the three-dimensional object in two dimensions. Semba on the other hand is clearly influenced by the traditional African djembe drum and Sousa’s interpretation reflects the ethnic art elements of the original drum in a refined and contemporary way. The Pacific Brass trio of tables conjoined is reminiscent of the 60s and 70s design ethos, while the Beat side table in goldcovered brass contains elements of a

child’s toy drum combined with ideas from the Jazz Age. His larger table designs are influenced by many sources from Scandinavian minimalism to French Provençal country home styling; these are never overt in his work, which is highly original, but there is just enough of the original elements in Sousa’s work for nondesigners to recognise where his idea may have come from. Sousa’s products are primarily made using a variety of different woods: some are solid oak while others may be corkwood and many of them have brass and lacquered finishes. His exciting approach to furniture design is currently making huge ripples among the contemporary design community and it looks as if his Branca Lisboa label may become iconic pieces of the future, just like Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair. bymarcosousa.com
