GREY GOOSE IS CONSIDERED WORLD’S BEST VODKA

Grey Goose vodka has been recognized as No. 1 vodka* by the most prestigious international institutions Grey Goose Vodka, world’s favourite luxury vodka**, is created with one goal – to be the world’s best tasting vodka. Grey Goose is the vodka chosen for the most important and glamorous international events, such as Cannes, Oscars, Golden Globes and the Baftas film festivals. Made in Cognac, France, home to the world’s most respected experts in spirits making, Grey Goose vodka benefits from the region’s rich history of creating luxury foods, wines and spirits. The Maître de Chai (cellar master) for Grey Goose vodka ensures that every element of its production is of the highest quality. He selects 100% of the finest French wheat, the same wheat used to create delicious French pastries, and employs an exclusive fivestep distillation process to concentrate its exceptional flavor. Pure spring water naturally filtered through Champagne limestone is then blended with the spirit. Only when the spirit has reached its optimal taste is the maître de chai truly satisfied. Grey Goose vodka is lush, smooth and rounded and melts in the mouth with a long-lasting, satisfying finish.

Grey Goose Cosmopolitan Method Combine 3 parts of Grey Goose vodka, ½ part of Cointreau, ½ part of cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime from ½ lime into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

*Awarded as “The Number One Vodka” by The Luxury Institute in 2007 **Honored as “The world’s best tasting Vodka” by Beverage Institute of Chicago in 1998.

LET THE BATTLE COMMENCE!

August 7 is a date not to be missed for all X Factor fans. Although previously competing in different years Belle Amie and Ruth Lorenzo will be fighting it out for their place in the charts as both their debut singles are scheduled to be released in the UK on the same day. Belle Amie, despite being one girl down, are back with their new, electro -pop track, Girls Up. Having been compared to Beyoncé’s sound, it seems they could have a head start. Miss Lorenzo has had a turbulent three years having left EMI, however, if her new single, Burn (download it on Spanish iTunes) is anything to go by she isn’t giving up without a fight. You can catch Ruth live in Marbella at Pinillo Beach on August 5th.

THE CHANGE-UP

A combo of Freaky Friday and 17 Again might not make you dash to the cinema, but with the directors of The Wedding Crashers and the writers behind The Hangover involved, I can’t help but feel a magic mix will make it to our screens. Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman star in this body-switching movie with a twist. Despite fantasising about each other’s lives the pair realise that life isn’t always what it seems when they wake up in each other’s bodies after a drunken night out. Whilst frantically trying not to throw each other’s lives into complete chaos they scramble around in a desperate attempt to get back into their own skin.

Nº6 FINAL DESTINATION 5 THE LIVING LEGEND IS...TOM JONES It’s not unusual to have famous faces on the Costa del Sol but Tom Jones is more than just a famous face, he is a living legend and will be taking to the stage at The Puente Romano Hotel on August 18 for this exclusive show. His vocals and charisma make him one of the most exciting and best-loved performers of all time, and for one night only you can re-live all his iconic tracks including: Kiss, Delilah and Sex Bomb. Tickets start from 90 euros and are available from El Corte Inglés, Ticketmaster and Málaga Entradas. This is an experience not to miss!

Nº2 THE TEEN CHOICE AWARDS 2011

Children are the future, and this month they are given a voice. The Teen Choice Awards celebrates the hottest teen talent from music, to movies and from sports to fashion. You may not be able to vote (as you have to be between 13 and 19 years old,) but you can still enjoy all the excitement, as the show will air live on Sunday August 7. The nominations have been released with the Twilight saga leading the pack with a whopping 11 nominations, whilst Glee and The Vampire Diaries are closely behind with nine nominations each.

THE VMAs ARE BACK

For the second year in a row, the VMAs will be taking place in Hollywood. You can catch all the action straight from the red carpet as the awards show will be broadcast live on MTV at 9pm on August 28. So book your place on the sofa and enjoy all the madness that the VMAs never fail to deliver.

You would think the fifth time round we would be bored of watching a group of beautiful teenagers fight to escape death before being horribly destroyed one by one. However, Final Destination 5 has created just as much of a buzz as its predecessors. In this fifth offering a man miraculously saves his co-workers from a petrifying suspension bridge collapse but, of course, the individuals were not supposed to live and in this breathtaking, gory and shocking 90 minutes, they race against time in the hope of cheating death. Starring Emma Bell, Miles Fisher and Tony Todd.

ONE DAY

Based on the bestselling novel by David Nicholls, One Day tells the story of Dexter and Emma who after meeting one day develop a relationship that will last a lifetime. Whether together or apart the two characters experience key moments over two decades on every July 15. They then learn that everything they are looking for really might have been right there all along. Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star in this romantic film of the summer that will have tears of sadness and joy rolling down your cheeks.

JAMIE CULLUM ON THE COAST

Having sold over five millions albums and previously collaborating with Katy Perry and Pharell Williams, Jamie Cullum is a music sensation, this concert is sure to be everything you can imagine and more.

ONE TO WATCH!

Victoria Beckham

has given birth to a longawaited baby girl, Harper Seven Beckham. Football sensation, David Beckham confirmed the baby’s birth to the world via his Facebook page, “I am so proud and excited to announce the birth of our daughter Harper Seven Beckham. She weighed a healthy 7lb and 10oz. Victoria is doing really well and her brothers are delighted to have a baby sister.” The Beckhams have previously publicised the meanings behind their three sons’ Christian names, which

led the world to wonder, why Harper? It has been revealed that the couple fell in love with the name for its lovely sound. Seven was chosen as a middle name due to its spiritual connection and because Harper was born at 7am in July, the seventh month of the year. As if the little girl’s birth could be any more exciting, rumours are circulating that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may be asked to be godparents!

Each month Society Marbella shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A-list actress, but whoever it is you will know they are one to watch! This month, Society Marbella has its eyes on PARADE.

Having already supported Alexandra Burke and Shakira on tour, Parade is set to be the newest pop sensation. Meet Lauren, Emily, Bianca, Jessica and Sian – prior to Parade many of the girls have had a brush with fame. Emily was in girl group Hope who appeared on X Factor in 2007, Sian was in the band City Girls, Jessica had a role in St Trinians 2, now they have come together and are going to be huge! Here they talk exclusively to Society Marbella about their route to success and the bright future they have ahead: Parade has leapt onto our radar this year; have you always wanted to be singers and performers? Jessica: I have always loved performing, even as a kid I loved all performing arts: acting, singing and dancing, but I was shy and a little embarrassed to admit it. It’s all I have ever wanted to do. The thrill of being on stage over rides all the fame and fortune the job could bring. If you weren’t in this industry what do you think you would be doing now? Bianca: I was really lucky to get into the band straight from school, so

22

You would have tho ught that Liz Hurley would happily put her questionable acting career behind her fol lowing the huge success of her beach and swimwe ar range. However, it looks like she may be able to combine her two passions, as rumours have reached Society Ma rbella that Miss Hurley has be en offered a multi-episod e role in the upcoming fifth series of Gossip Girl. Liz is to pla y Diana Payne, “a sexy, smart , selfmade media mogu l and allaround force to be rec koned with”. The arrival of Dia na to the Upper East Side wil l affect the lives of all the chara cters, but most significantly Gossip Girl herself. It seems Liz Hurley is set to cause a stir.

I would probably be at University studying musical theatre. Who inspires you? Lauren: We’re all into very different music collectively; we admire the artistry of Beyoncé and Rihanna, and the energy of the Spice Girls. The one thing that seems to differentiate Parade from other girl bands is your individuality; I’m always excited to see what you are all going to wear next! If you could describe your style in three words what would you say? Emily: Boho, Festival chic, accessorize to the max! And finally, what does the rest of 2011 have in store for Parade? Sian: We are currently on a festival tour, which is exciting as the crowds are so high energy and the atmosphere is amazing. Our debut album is out at the end of August so were really looking forward to the launch of that. Parade’s debut album is released at the end of the summer and their second single, Perfume is available to download now on iTunes. Catch them this summer at V Festival on August 20-21.

Despite the disappointment of Sex and the City 2, HBO films are still in discussions about making a prequel. The author of the original book series, Candace Bushnell, apparently wants Selena Gomez to play a young Charlotte York. Bushnell spoke of her admiration for the Wizards of Waverly Place star, “She would make a really good young Charlotte, she is so pretty. I was like, gosh, wouldn’t she be great.” Gossip Girl Blake Lively’s name has been previously attached to the leading role of Carrie Bradshaw.

A rep for FOX has confirmed that transfer student Sam Evans, played by Chord Overstreet, will not be returning as a main character in the third series. But don’t panic you will get to admire his pretty, young face in a couple of episodes, as he will be making an appearance as an occasional guest star. Kurt’s buddy/ boyfriend Blaine, played by Darren Criss, and dance dynamo Mike, played by Harry Shum Jr, will be getting more screen time, as they are both being upgraded to full time gleeks! At least Chord will have a shoulder to cry on, as he has just made his first public outing in London with new girlfriend, Emma Roberts!

Halle Berry can breathe a sigh of relief, as her suspected stalker has been caught. Berry had to contact the police as an unidentified man was repeatedly spotted on her private property. On one occasion, Berry caught the man staring directly through her kitchen window. The man, believed to be a member of the paparazzi, managed to escape police on numerous occasions before finally being caught by off duty policemen on his most recent trip. He was arrested and is set to be charged with suspicion of felony stalking.

It’s a fact

Sean Penn does not waste any time when it comes to the ladies. Following his romance with Scarlett Johansson, who moved in and out of his Malibu mansion in record time (even for Hollywood), Penn has been seen out and about in Los Angeles with his rumoured new girlfriend, brunette beauty Stacey Koplin.

is the word that came to mind when news reached Society Marbella of the latest celebrity couple. Made in Chelsea’s Ollie Locke has confirmed he is “100% proper dating,” Topshop boss, Sir Phillip Green’s daughter, Chloe. Sophie

Ellis-Bextor Interview by Laura-Jane Bruce

Sophie Ellis-Bextor exploded onto the music scene over 10 years ago, with hits Take Me Home and the iconic Murder on the Dancefloor. SOCIETY MARBELLA exclusively caught up with the British beauty before her guest DJ set at Nikki Beach later this month.

L-JB: You’ve been out the music industry for a little while now. We’re pleased to have you back, what have you been doing over the past couple of years? S.E-B: To be honest I haven’t really stopped! I’ve been recording and releasing songs with other people such as Freemasons and Armin van Buuren, touring and recording. I just can’t be everywhere at once I suppose.

L-JB: You’ve been involved with the music industry for quite some time now, what inspires you day by day? S.E-B: Well, I adore what I do and I really can’t think of anything else I’d rather be involved in. I’m inspired by the fact that I might write a song or meet someone to work with and it changes everything. Possibility like that is exciting.

L-JB: What is it like being married to someone in the music business?

L-JB: What did you learn from being in Theaudience all those years ago?

S.E-B: It can be chaotic when we’re both touring and working hard, but overall it’s great because we understand the highs and lows we’re both going through and Richard (Jones, bass guitarist in The Feeling) gives me great music advice too. Plus, he can work all the buttons in the studio – I can’t!

S.E-B: Lots…How to be in a band; what it feels like to travel long distances in a splitter bus; how what you say to the media and what is printed often portrays a completely different message; don’t believe the hype; enjoy the journey and most importantly have fun – it really is a great job and you don’t have to grow up.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

L-JB: You’ve just released your fourth studio album Make a Scene. What has the response been like so far? Why that title? S.E-B: Fortunately, it’s been really well received and I’m really excited about it. The new album is a pleasure to tour with because the songs are so dancey and immediate. The title is named after one of the tracks on the record. I suppose it sums up why I started singing in a band as a teenager. I didn’t feel part of any scene so I wanted to make my own. L-JB: You’ve collaborated with some great names on your new album. Do you ever get star struck? S.E-B: No, but I get very excited and have to pinch myself sometimes. I’ve worked with some amazing people; I know I’m a lucky girl.

26

L-JB: You’ve supported George Michael and Take That on tour (I actually went to see that tour myself). That must have been amazing for you!? S.E-B: It was great and moulded me into a better performer. I sang for thousands of people in a crowd who were waiting for someone else. You need to perform at your best when you’re in that situation! L-JB: What would you describe your music genre to be, because it’s quite niche. S.E-B: Contemporary disco? Electro pop? To be honest, I’m not entirely sure. I usually call it pop music because that’s quite non-specific. L-JB: You own your own record label, EBGB’s and your own nightclub Modern Love, how did that come about?

S.E-B: The club was just for fun, I wanted to create the club night I couldn’t find when I went out. Friendly, fun and playing a good eclectic mix of music I want to dance to. Regarding the record label, it came about when I reached a point where I felt I could do it on my own and release my albums by myself. It’s very rewarding. L-JB: I was looking at the fan comments on your website and you have a huge Spanish fan base. S.E-B: Yes, so it seems. I love having such a broad fan base; all of my fans are lovely and very sweet. L-JB: Talk to me about your tattoo. What do you think it says about you? What was the inspiration behind it? S.E-B: It’s a heart that says “family” on my arm. I had it

just after I had my first baby and just before I got married. I think starting my own family has been crucial to keeping me grounded, happy and focused. I work hard and love music but my babies come first.

S.E-B: I love the Spanish style. Obviously, you have great shops like Zara but I love Spanish street style too, one of my guilty pleasures is shopping in markets. That’s where all the bargains and unique pieces are.

L-JB: What can we expect from your DJ set at the Kid Creole and the Coconuts Nikki Beach after party?

L-JB: Speaking of babies, what is it like being a mum? How do you find the time to fit it all in?

L-JB: How does it feel to follow in the footsteps of Kate Moss and be chosen as the face of Rimmel? What are your favourite must-have products and best beauty tips?

L-JB: Have you ever been to Marbella before?

S.E-B: I love being a mum but, yes, it’s certainly quite full on juggling both things at times. However, I have lots of support and that makes it all worthwhile. I can’t imagine not working, so it just is what it is. All in all it’s great and I wouldn’t have it any other way. L-JB: You’re at the forefront of fashion. Where are your favourite places to shop? What do you think of the Spanish style?

S.E-B: It’s a bit of a dream come true, to be a face of a brand like Rimmel. I guess I have always loved make-up, since I was a little girl. In fact, Rimmel was the first brand I ever bought. My favourite products are bright lipsticks and eyeshadow colours. Oh, and black eyeliner. That’s a bit of a regular look with me – the 60s tick.

S.E-B: A party set I think. I’m looking forward to hearing Kid Creole!

S.E-B: I haven’t been before but if it’s like the rest of Spain, I know I’ll love it. I’m anticipating a holiday town, sunshine, sea and lovely food. Am I close?

Don’t miss Sophie Ellis-Bextor and her husband Richard Jones DJing at the after party of Kid Creole and the Coconuts on August 25. Tickets available from Nikki Beach reception for €50.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

presents

A Tropical Beach Party

Kid Creole

& THE COCONUTS Prior to his concert at Nikki Beach next month, SOCIETY MARBELLA caught up with showman Kid Creole for an exclusive interview to find out what he’s been up to over the past few years

How did you come up with the name Kid Creole and the Coconuts? The name came about one evening while dining in Manhattan with my exwife. I asked her what we should call the band and she replied, “Let’s call it Kid Coconut and the Creolians.” I liked the kookiness of the idea, but the next morning I was listening to some Leiber and Stoller music and I heard a song called King Creole, so I changed it to match the song title. My wife disagreed, saying it was too egotistical, so I changed it back to Kid Creole and declared the three backing singers/dancers the Coconuts. And the rest, as they say, is history. Thank you Adriana Kaegi (my ex). Thank you Leiber and Stoller. And thank you Elvis.

What have you been doing over the last 10 years? In the last 10 years, I have released over 100 songs on my own label MOTH PEEPS MUSIC (all of these songs will soon be available online for free). I have toured the world with the Kid Creole band. I have joined the Night of the Proms cast for amazing shows in Belgium, Holland and Germany. These shows involved a 75-piece orchestra and a 30-member choir. It was inspirational to hear my music with this embellishment. I have also starred in a stage musical entitled, Oh What a Night. After 1000 performances I “retired” from

28

Kid Creole

the show. I have also been working on a stage musical called Cherchez La Femme that will open simultaneously on the West End and on Broadway in 2012. I have also completed another stage musical, I. V. League, which will open off-Broadway in December this year. And, most importantly, I got married to my favourite Coconut.

What does your new album “I Wake up Screaming” say about you as an artist? The new album is the apotheosis of Creolian evolution. It is without doubt my best work since the 1976 album, Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. Artistically this album demonstrates a willingness to invite other talented people into my world. My collaborations with Brennan Green and Andrew Butler would never have happened years ago. And the fact that my sons produced the album has given me a new lease of life, as these young men have brought fresh ingredients to add to the already delicious recipes.

What is it you enjoy most about performing concerts? After having played thousands of concerts all over the world, the thing that still turns me on about live performances is the immediate gratification. I still get a buzz from bringing enjoyment to music lovers. I still love hearing a fan say to me in a private moment, “You have brought such happiness into my life!” To alter someone’s state of mind – and body – is an amazing gift. I do not take it for granted. I love creating the songs in the studio but I adore and worship the stage performances even more. On stage you can connect in the here and now with the very people who have kept you alive decade after decade. Needless to say, without the fans an artist can lead a very desperate life. And making new fans is as important as keeping the “old” ones.

What can audiences expect from your upcoming concert at Nikki Beach? First of all, let me say I love Nikki Beach. This part of the

world works extremely well with the Creolian spirit. The Nikki Beach clientele is a fun crowd. We have played here before, and we remember these shows because the people love music, love themselves and know how to let their hair down and have a truly hedonistic time. Creolism is all about hedonism. People who know the band know what to expect – a good time. Those who don’t know the band (shame on you!) should expect a night full of rhythm and passion. Kid Creole, the Coconuts and The Creole Band will be performing at Nikki Beach on August 25. To purchase tickets, enquire at the reception. nikkibeach.com/marbella

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER Leading product ranges, treatments and news from the world of health and beauty

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER Thinking it would soon disappear, I wasn’t too bothered, yet as the months went by my skin got worse and my confidence start to disappear. I literally tried everything, but the more I did, the more irritated my skin became. I soon got to the point where I dreaded looking in the mirror and refused to go out unless it was dark. I soon slumped into depression. The doctor wasn’t much help either; he prescribed some antibiotics, which made no difference at all, before sending me off to see a very unsympathetic dermatologist. I was sent home again with a selection of creams that burnt my skin and left it raw.

By chance, I had an appointment with a gynaecologist on a separate matter. Like an angel, he answered my prayers and explained that I had developed Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. The balance of hormones that I was making in my ovaries had been altered and I was producing more testosterone (the male hormone) than normal. PCOS can cause period problems, reduced fertility, excess hair growth and acne. He prescribed me the contraceptive pill Dianette, which stops ovaries from producing too much testosterone and therefore improves both acne and excess hair.

Three very long months, later my skin cleared up and I felt as though I had been given my life back. I continued to take Dianette for two years, after which I felt that my body needed a break. Yes, you guessed it; the acne soon came back with a vengeance. I tried to ride it out, but as I felt the depression creeping back again I gave in and started another course of the pill. I did not want to be taking this medication for the rest of my life and, after a lot of research I gave my body and lifestyle an overhaul and decided to treat the condition naturally. A year later I stopped the pill and fingers crossed my spots haven’t returned.

MY TOP TIPS

WATER

Drink two litres a day, to help flush out toxins. Swap teas and coffees for herbal teas.

MICRODERMABRASION

OF BOTHER You cannot understand how devastating acne is until you suffer from it yourself. I sailed through my teenage years without a blemish in sight, however, this all changed when I hit my 20s. It started on my chin and slowly crept up the sides of my face. I couldn’t understand it. I had gone through puberty, and adults didn’t get acne, did they?

32

CARROT JUICE Containing an abundance of vitamin C and potassium, it is also one of the richest sources of vitamin A. All of which have been proven to greatly enhance the overall health of your skin.

FACIALS

CARDIOVASCULAR

NATURAL SKINCARE

This can help acne by increasing the blood flow to the skin and providing oxygen to the skin cells. Moderate sweating will clean the pores from the inside. Exercise also rebalances hormones and reduces stress – both are precursors of acne. Make sure you wash your face before and after exercise.

As effective as an acne treatment for two reasons. It unblocks pores and kills bacteria. I recommend Cosmoclinic & Isabelle’s salon in Marbella. +34 952 770 200

Every month our health and beauty expert, Nicola McGeorge spills the beans on the behind-the-scenes gossip and tricks of the trade

FRESH ORGANIC

When skin is inflamed and sensitive, the fewer chemicals you use, the better. I opted for Dr Hauschka cleanser and moisturiser, Aubrey Organics Pure Aloe Vera and Green People’s Sun Lotion, as sun lotion is the worst for clogging pours. I exfoliate once a week and use the Dr Hauschka Cleansing Clay Mask.

SUPPLEMENTS

A good multi-vitamin such as Natures Best and Higher Natures MSM tables. The human body doesn’t generally produce enough MSM to treat acne, therefore when taken orally it can help with controlling acne inflammation and reduce the pain of such outbreaks.

EXERCISE

GET BACKTO

NATURE

Swim in the sea as much as possible. Get 30 minutes of fresh air every day without any products on your face. Sunshine always works wonders on my skin. At night clean your face using organic muslin cloths and then leave your skin au natural. It needs to breathe.

EPSOM SALTS

Bathe in them twice a week (I get through a kilo of salts) and keep splashing the salty water over your face or duck you head under for as long as you can.

NUTRITION A healthy diet makes all the difference. Believe me. Here are some of my super foods:

BERRIES: Blueberries, raspberries and cranberries are all rich in phytochemicals, which protect the skin cells. WALNUTS: They are rich in omega-3 oils, another powerful antioxidant that helps to keep the skin plump and flexible. Omega-3 oils are also found in oily fish such as salmon or flaxseed oil. WHOLE-WHEAT BREAD, CEREALS AND BRAZIL NUTS: Dietary selenium comes from nuts, cereals, meat, fish and eggs. The mineral selenium connects all these foods for healthy skin. GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES: Rich in magnesium.

It worked for me!

To begin our session I was asked to stand side on, facing, and then facing away from Grant, so that he could identify what was causing my constant discomfort. Having had a sports massage and been assessed by a chiropractor before I was very impressed by this as no one had ever explained the source of my problem. I will spare you the details but apparently having one leg longer than the other and rounded shoulders isn’t ideal.

ports massage is not just for athletes but for anyone who suffers muscular aches, pains, spasms, stiff joints, stress and tension. Grant Foster not only works towards resolving these issues, he also addresses the reason why it has arisen, offering ways in which you can help to correct it. When he performs the treatment in your home, even on a Saturday, there really is no excuse to ignore the problem any longer.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I

Nicola McGeorge reviews 5 Dinners, a concept where nutritious meal ingredients are delivered to your home

t’s summer. I’m hot and bothered and finding supermarkets an absolute nightmare. I honestly do want to eat healthily, but the last thing I want to do is drive around to 10 different stores trying to find everything from dill to cod to create a balanced meal. Plus, I really am just too busy. So, when I got the chance to review the services of 5 Dinners I jumped at the chance. All the ingredients to create five delicious, nutritious meals were delivered straight to my door.

Having two Diplomas in Sports Massage, a Master Diploma in Clinical Massage and a Diploma in Joint Mobilisation, Grant Foster is an extremely reputable therapist who has worked closely with several celebrity athletes, including The Gladiators. This type of therapy has many benefits. In the long term it can prevent future injuries and correct poor posture,

Created by expert in diet and nutrition, Christine Zellén, the 5 Dinners “food bag” contains fresh vegetables, root vegetables, fish, chicken, meat and whole grains. In fact, everything you need to get all the essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements your body requires to function properly. The bag came complete with easy to follow recipes, (in English and Spanish). Now, all I had to do was cook – ah yes, I forgot to mention, Delia Smith I am not! The first night was sesame chicken nuggets with rice and curry sauce. This is a great dish for the whole family as it tricks children into thinking they are not eating healthy food. Without too many mishaps, (I did burn myself

Grant began the massage; reassuring me that if the pressure was too deep to let him know, advising and explaining as he went. I really felt that I was in safe hands. All of my questions were answered and I was glad to find out that there were a few simple things which I could do that would collectively correct my problems and improve my posture. Working closely with fellow therapists he was able to recommend that I visit a podiatrist, osteopath and begin exercising through Pilates to strengthen my core muscles. Feeling positive and grateful that I finally know how to keep the pain at bay, I wondered why I had put it off for so long. +34 667 862 475 sportstherapymarbella.com

twice, this is why I am not usually allowed to do the cooking) 30 minutes later I had created a tasty meal that was enjoyed by all. As I wanted to see if the idea was suitable for all generations, so I roped my parents in to try out the next dish. They live off fried, unhealthy food and my mother’s idea of vegetables is chips. Thankfully, they thoroughly enjoyed their meatballs in lemon-tomato sauce with fettuccine and lentils. Hopefully this will make them realise that healthy food doesn’t just mean lettuce leaves. We enjoyed five different meals and still had leftovers, which we were able to freeze, making the service great value for money. The best part is that you do not have to be a whiz in the kitchen to create these delicious meals. The recipes make it quick, easy and most of all fun. I mean if I can do it, anybody can! +34 952 768 331 5cenas.com

SUMMER HAIR CARE TIPS Zoe Woods, director of Wood Salon shares her advice on how to maintain healthy hair during the summer.

S

ummer conjures up images of natural highlights and wavy, surfer chic hair. The reality? Sunshine, scorching temperatures and humidity, mixed with sea salt and chlorine spells hair SOS. We all take care to apply protective sun creams to our skin, but it pays to remember that our hair is also prone to the same damages and stresses. USE PROTECTION If your hair is coloured then cover your hair when outside. The sun can have detrimental effects and will fade your colour. Blondes can turn yellow and brunettes ginger. Hats are bang on trend this season and a panama will suit any age group. I also recommend Redkens UV Rescue Shimmering Defense, which targets all coloured, sun-stressed hair. The lightweight, miracle formula coats each strand to protect and repair UV damage. Shimmering Defense achieves a smooth appearance without weighing the hair down. SCHEDULE DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENTS We have been inundated with clients wanting our “in salon” treatments, as they are much more powerful than anything that can be done at home. Our clients walk out with glossy, gorgeous hair and all their friends want to know

SUPER STRANDS

their secret. Catering for all budgets, we treat each client as an individual and prescribe a treatment that is suited for their hair’s particular needs. We even offer half price off the colour treatment if taken on the same day that we colour the client’s hair, as we know how much difference it makes.

Growing your own hair is so last season ladies

BE RELIGIOUS ABOUT TRIMS Trimming a centimetre every six weeks will leave hair fuller and less likely to split. As each strand splits it thins the hair making it flat and dull. Long hair is more prone to damage.

A

re you sick and tired of your current hair style and want to change it immediately? Hair extensions can add instant length, volume, thickness or highlights to your hair in just a few hours. Celebrities from all walks of fame know that with hair extensions it’s ok to stretch the truth. Eva Longoria, a regular in Marbella, switched from a flicky-out bob to a full-on head of long hair overnight, while Beyoncé Knowles achieves dramatically different fashion styles ranging from a curly afro to sleek and smooth in the blink of an eye.

One of the world’s most sophisticated hair extension procedures, Flashpoints, is now available in Marbella at the Advanced Hair Studio. This system is a breakthrough in hair technology because unlike some other brands Flashpoints are gentle on your hair. This is because they do not use: * Glues * Waxes * Weaving Instead, a sophisticated hair extension procedure is used, where a link of your new Flashpoint is attached to a lock of your hair. Best of all they are re-usable time and time again.

This is a sophisticated hair extension procedure where a link of your Flashpoints is attached to a lock of your hair. Best of all they are re-usable time and time again. Your new thicker and longer hair will look so natural that nobody will be able to tell the difference, they’ll only notice how great your hair looks. That’s because flashpoints are human hair and virtually undetectable. Flashpoints are available in a wide range of thicknesses, lengths and matched to colour perfection.

There is nothing worse than an obvious set of extensions, (yes we are talking about you, Katie Price). However, Flashpoints use only the best quality Remi human hair, which is virtually undetectable. Your new, thicker and longer hair will look so natural that nobody will be able to tell the difference. They will feel and behave so much like your own hair that you can generally have them professionally coloured, permed and styled as you like.

FREE CONSULTATION

Flashpoints are available in a wide range of thicknesses, lengths and colours – there are over 23 ready-made shades to choose from, which together with further professional colouring, make your colour, style and highlighting options endless.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

Let’s Get

Physical

Heidi Klum is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women in the world. However, she has to work hard to maintain her physique. Here, David Kirsch, her personal trainer, shares his fitness philosophy and key moves to get into shape. Here are David’s tips for maintaining your figure whilst on holiday:

If you’re anything like me, gearing up for a big getaway means working out, eating right and slimming down. We all want to look our best on vacation, but there’s nothing like a new setting to derail weeks of hard work. This summer, don’t lose the bikini body before you even hit the beach. Make healthy choices and still have fun with my five easy stay-slim vacation tips.

PACK SMART Staying active is as easy as bringing sneakers. Whether you’re off to a beachside resort or a European city, there are endless ways to fit in your daily exercise if you have the right footwear. By squeezing in just 30 minutes of movement each day, you can maintain your weight and not lose sight of your goals.

PREP FOR THE PLANE

Long lines, travel delays and the stress of flying make you more susceptible to indulging. Instead of opting for not-so-healthy airport food, bring healthy snacks in your carry-on bag. Think almonds, crudités and my David Kirsch KIRSCHBAR.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE whole family. It also believes that addiction is often rooted in a history of abuse and traumatic exposure – a view supported by a large body of recent research.

HIT THE SHOPS

As soon as you arrive at the hotel, stock the mini-fridge. I scour local markets for fresh produce and load up for the whole week. Having healthy snacks on-hand will prevent you from splurging during the meals out or, even worse, ordering room service.

Meeting clients’ complex needs

WORK THE ROOM

No time to hit the hotel gym? Get a mini workout in your room. Try push-ups with your feet on the bed and reverse scissor crunches on the floor for a quick toning boost.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Have a plan in place for dining out. Before you even enter a restaurant, know what you’ll order. That way there are no slips. But remember, it’s ok to indulge in moderation. Do you think I skip pasta when I’m in Italy? No way! You only live once and shouldn’t have to deny yourself. Just don’t overdo it.

You can’t talk about Dubai without mentioning the Burj al Arab; the world’s only seven-star hotel is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Designed to resemble the elegant sails of an Arabian dhow, the Burj al Arab rises to a height of 321 metres. Children will be entertained at the Sinbad’s kids’ club and at Wild Wadi waterpark, as adults contemplate which of the six award-winning restaurants to dine in. Reception desks on each floor, Jacuzzis in every suite and dining under the sea and stars make this hotel the ultimate in hospitality.

W

ith the school break in full swing, one thing is on everyone’s mind – holidays. Living in Marbella, every day feels like a holiday with the beautiful beaches, wonderful weather and vast selection of restaurants and resorts to spend your days enjoying. However, everyone dreams about that special vacation. This month Society Marbella shows you the hot spots to holiday in this summer.

A European experience…

A weekend away… There is no need to board a plane to enjoy a little break away. One of Andalucía’s best kept secrets, the mountain village of Benahavis, is a holiday destination in itself. Known as the Rincón de la Gastronomía or “the dining room of the Costa del Sol”, it is home to an outstanding number of exquisite restaurants. A 20-minute drive from Marbella, Benahavis’ picturesque mountain and sea views make it feel a

54

million miles from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Banús. Treat yourself to a night or two at El Cortijo de los Caballos, a rare gem resembling a tropical oasis that provides an ideal hideaway for a romantic weekend or some time alone. Originally an equestrian centre, El Cortijo de los Caballos has retained many features of the original stable giving it a rustic ambiance full of charm and character.

If you don’t fancy venturing too far, Europe has an array of wonderful locations that are perfect for a romantic retreat or a fun-filled family trip. Greece oozes simplicity: sun, sand, traditional dining and delightful hospitality, and its diversity enables you to enjoy whatever type of holiday you desire. The endless beaches offer you a relaxing resort vacation, while the history and culture can provide an action packed itinerary. If you stay in Athens, the Acropolis is hard to ignore. Visible from every corner of this historic capital city, it used to house a giant statue of the city’s patron goddess, Athena. Built entirely from marble and stunningly illuminated at night, the Acropolis is a magnificent sight – once seen you will never forget it.

Further afield… Despite most of Dubai being less than a decade old, it’s overloaded with jawdropping sky scrapers, luxury hotels and extensive culture. Man-made islands, the world’s tallest tower and numerous world-class golf courses are only a slice of what Dubai has to offer. A vibrant, cosmopolitan city on the shores of the Arabian Gulf, Dubai has been transformed into an indescribable destination. For an unforgettable day out try the Arabian Nights Desert Safari.

For ultimate luxury the King George Palace, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, in Athens is on a different level of refinement. A recent renovation has restored the hotel to its original glamour making it “the” place to stay in Greece. Situated minutes from all that Athens has to offer, the King George Palace is an attraction in its own right. Once home to kings, princesses and presidents, it is an historic landmark offering every modern amenity you could wish for as well as the highest level of personal service.

Long haul luxury…

If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, then the peaceful and bohemian Damouchari Hotel in the Pelion region is your ideal retreat. Situated on its own white, pebble beach, this idyllic setting epitomises relaxation and is a suitable distance away from the hordes of tourists. You may recognise the location on arrival, as some scenes from Mamma Mia were shot in the region. Rustic and secluded this is a home from home, and will provide you with a truly unique and unforgettable holiday experience.

The sapphire blue waters, white sandy beaches and crème de la crème of hotel resorts make The Maldives the ultimate paradise. Positioned south west of Sri Lanka on the equator, The Maldives comprises 1200 coral islands of which approximately 900 are uninhabited. It is not only the islands that exude beauty, beneath the water’s surface is just as spectacular. The abundance of varieties of fish makes the Maldives one of the most prestigious diving destinations in the world.

In the late afternoon a 4x4 will collect you from your hotel and transport you into the middle of the Arabian desert to experience an hour of rigorous, exhilarating dune cruising followed by the chance to watch the beautiful, red sun setting over the vast desert. You will then be invited to enjoy an Arabian barbecue whilst being entertained by vibrant belly dancers. Before your journey home try the camel rides, sandboarding or have a traditional henna tattoo.

The One and Only Reethi Rah, set on one of the largest islands in North Male atoll, provides an unrivalled level of service and unparalleled sophistication. Adorned with endless, pure sand and turquoise bays, all the villas have beautiful ocean views and direct access to the private lagoon. Enjoy sushi overlooking the sea at Tapasake, the resort’s modern, chic Japanese restaurant, Middle Eastern cuisine and shisha at the sensual Arabesque Fanditha or relish the delicious luxury of private dining in

With over 50 five-star hotels, accommodation options in the city are endless. The Armani Hotel is one of the most recent additions to Dubai’s hotel portfolio. Located in the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, the hotel was designed by world-renowned fashion designer, Giorgio Armani with every element of the interior embodying the understated elegance that is his signature style. Every guest is assigned a “lifestyle manager”, who along with their assistant will arrange everything from dining reservations in one of the eight in-house restaurants to indoor skiing lessons at Mall of the Emirates.

the lavish comfort of your own villa. The One and Only Reethi Rah is a truly tropical paradise. The W Hotel collection’s mantra “Whatever/Whenever” is perfectly applied in the W Retreat and Spa in The Maldives, whether you want to dine in the privacy of your ocean view villa, learn to dive in the Indian Ocean or dance the night away in the only underground nightclub in The Maldives. The W Retreat and Spa has it all. Whatever you desire, one thing is certain – a trip to the Maldives really is the holiday of a lifetime.

EASY LIVING

DON’T SAY YOU HAVEN’T BEEN

WARNED

Do you surf the internet during working hours? Be careful, because if you abuse the privilege too much the company could fire you.

For a long time now, using the computer resources provided by the company (such as the internet or email) for employees’ “private purposes” has provoked many controversies, and will continue to cause a lot more. The High Court has now established general criteria that should be taken into consideration for these matters. Firstly, all of the resources in question must be work tools provided by the company to the employees with the purpose that they be used for professional purposes, and secondly the employer has to establish the rules of usage for these resources. It is common practice that the employer will allow a certain margin of tolerance for the private of these resources, but it is necessary that the employer has informed his employees of the measures that will be adopted, if required, to guarantee effective professional use. Otherwise, the employees’ fundamental intimacy rights may be violated. The employer is permitted to adopt any control measures that it considers appropriate, with the objective of verifying the employees’ fulfillment of their employment obligations and duties.

What companies have learned now is that they need an internal code of practice in order to explain to employees what they can do and what they can´t do, and to inform them that the use of the computer resources may be controlled. In this way they can protect themselves if an employee chooses to abuse their use of the computer. This spelled out in the High Court´s recent ruling issued by the Superior Court of Justice of La Rioja (May 25 2011). This sentence confirms that it is fair to dismiss an employee who surfs “Facebook” in their working time when established rules are included in an internal handbook. Furthermore, the company in question had warned the employee several times of the consequences his conduct would cause. If you have been warned that you are abusively using the internet at work you should be careful, because the next time it occurs you could be fired. Don’t say you haven’t been warned!

This limited edition carpet, named the “Lilac Lady”, is exclusive to Spain. There were only 250 created worldwide and Jeff bought four to be offered at Marbella Carpets. The carpet was designed by renowned designer Guy Laroche, and is fashioned using wool, silk, leather and Swarovski crystals. This outstanding, and unique design was created by one of the most famous master weavers in the world; Kashizadeh. Totally original, and a one-off, the peacock connotes longevity in life in the Islam world, and took over two years to make, using over two million knots per square metre. 100 percent natural silk.

Named ‘Qum’ after the holy city in Iran where the finest carpets in the world are made, this extremely exclusive piece took 1 and half years to create. Signed by the master weaver Mohammadi, there are approximately 1million, 220 thousand knots per square meter. 100 percent natural silk.

GEORGE BENSON The sounds of jazz sensation George Benson filled the sky when the Grammy award winner took to centre court at the Puente Romano Tennis Centre last month. George is no stranger to the Costa de Sol, and was back by popular demand captivating a bursting audience with remarkable renditions of his greatest hits including Broadway, Give me the Night and Never Give Up on a Good Thing. But it wasn’t all work and no play for Mr Benson who was spotted enjoying a much deserved relaxing afternoon at Suite del Mar prior to the event.

DRIVE ON!

Our in-depth motoring review

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the McLaren MP4-12C

B

ack in the mid-1980s, renowned suspension guru, Rhoddy Harvey-Bailey, explained to me that anti-roll bars are only there for fine-tuning, or to correct mistakes inherent in a suspension design. I recalled his words very clearly as McLaren Automotive’s MD, Antony Sherrif, explained the philosophy behind the suspension design of the new MP4-12C. Deriving its name from McLaren’s winning Formula 1 racecar line-up, the £168,500 MP4-12C is a clean sheet of paper design and the vanguard of a road car line-up that will eventually cover three quite different models, including a four-door sports saloon.

104

105

DRIVE ON!

DRIVE ON! single piece, Formula 1 style, centrally pivoting paddle to operate its bespoke Graziano-made seven-speed dual-clutch SSG (Seamless Shift Gearbox) transmission. McLaren say this makes for a more authentic driving experience, as this is how the shifters work on their F1 racecar. The bespoke, 3,799cc, flat-plane crank, bi-turbo V8 engine that McLaren designed from the ground up with Ricardo, who make it in their UK facility, is both powerful and torque rich. With 592hp at 7,000rpm and 599Nm (442 lb ft) Nm of torque between 3,000 and 7,000rpm, it just edges out the naturally aspirated motor of its chief rival, the Ferrari 458 Italia. Real world performance is also helped by the McLaren’s relatively low 1,434kg kerb weight. Thanks to its carbonfibre centre tub and aluminium and SMC plastic body panels, it is 51kg lighter than the Ferrari, resulting in a spectacular power-to-weight ratio of 455bhp/tonne. McLaren claim 3.3 sec for the 0-100km/h run, but magazines that have figured the car have achieved 3.1 sec, with 200km/h coming up in a stunning 8.9 sec. Top speed is 328km/h (205mph), making it the fastest car in this class. Mere numbers cannot describe how fast this car feels when you plant your right foot all the way to the lightweight carpet. The McLaren’s twin-turbo V8 motor produces sensational thrust that pushes you towards

The MP4-12C eschews the use of anti-roll bars because they limit suspension movement as well as axle articulation, thus degrading the inherent ride quality of a car. Instead, McLaren devised an active ride system that uses hydraulic pressure in its computer-controlled, Tennecomade, active damping system to resist roll, thus obviating the need for anti-roll bars.

micro-switches embedded under the horizontal surface of the lead-in strake to the side air intake of its carbonfibre doors. Run your hand under the area where you would expect a handle to be and the butterfly door springs ajar ready for you to lift it. The angle of the door opening mimics that of the legendary McLaren F1 from two decades ago.

The interconnection of these dampers, front and rear and side-to-side to control roll as well as dive and squat, is a simple and elegant solution that takes advantage of the speed of current microprocessors to effectively sidestep an age-old mechanical problem. A further advantage of the system is that it can be programmed for various modes of operation, with the choice of comfort, sport and track modes at the driver’s fingertips.

The large openings provide relatively easy access to the cabin, and first impressions are of a simple and wellfinished interior. The MP4-12C eschews any visual showmanship with its straightforward, mainly analogue instrument pack. The most important display in a driver’s car is the rev counter, and this is central to the McLaren’s instrument layout, with road speed as a subsidiary. Visibility is excellent for a mid-engined supercar. The Apillars have been designed in such a way that they do not block as much of your critical view to the front three quarter aspects as on some rivals.

Eager to show that their new car can really walk-thewalk, McLaren invited me to drive the MP4-12C on public roads around Dunsfold in Surrey, followed by a maximum attack session on the runway of the nearby airfield, where the British Aerospace Harrier VTOL fighterbomber was once made. Dunsfold is also where the BBC’s entertaining Top Gear programme is filmed, and where I was invited to watch the tanker chase night scene at “Miami Airport” being filmed for the James Bond movie Casino Royale back in 2006. I will always remember the first time I pressed the external micro-switch under the mirror on a TVR to unlock the driver’s door. The MP4-12C goes one better by having its

106

the horizon. It is strong, smooth and relentless, and although peak power occurs at 7,000rpm, it revs out to over 8,000rpm, with the cut-out set at 8,500rpm. Initially, I left the transmission to its own devices, and it does a better job of impersonating a proper automatic gearbox than most. However, this is not the way I like to drive a supercar, so I switch the system to manual, which tells the electronic brain to take the day off. The SSG gearbox really does what it says on the tin. Fast and seamless, it makes full use of the healthy torque curve to give you one long sustained blast of acceleration from zero to top speed. Epic stuff! There are times when a new car redefines the rules, and in ride quality, the MP4-12C does just that. As we trundle along the perimeter roads of the airfield, heading for the main gate, I am amazed at the car’s supple ride and handling ease, and sense that there is more to come. I have never encountered a supercar that rides this well, and with the level of composure that the McLaren shows on these roads. Bounce and rebound control in Normal mode is worthy of a good sports saloon like a BMW M5, with a secondary ride that takes the edges off short sharp bumps. And as I ramp up the pace, the primary ride and body control over long wave undulations prove to be spectacularly good.

Firing up the engine is as simple as pressing the start button on the console. The twin-turbocharged, flat-plane crank V8 roars into life with a healthy growl and settles down to a relatively deep, but quiet, grumbling idle. Forced aspiration muffles the flat-plane crank V8’s voice considerably, and the loud racecar-like bark that some consider part and parcel of the Ferrari and Lamborghini ethos is conspicuous for its absence. Instead, the MP412C makes its own unique noise. Where every other manufacturer uses independent left and right paddle shifts, McLaren has chosen a

107

DRIVE ON!

Yet, like all current cars that have three suspension settings, the best overall mode is the middle one. In Sport, that extra bit of damper control removes any hint of softness over crests, reduces body roll in fast corners and gives an extra dose of precision to the steering when turning in to a bend. With the car’s design brief emphasising low weight, stiffness, good crash performance, the light and ultrastiff 75kg CarboTech-made carbon-fibre tub creates a stable and strong structure. The suspension can thus be calibrated for performance and comfort with little or no compromise. As I went faster and faster, the McLaren’s obvious talent impressed all the more. Track mode is not as aggressive as some I have come across, but it simply offers no performance advantage on a real world road, while detracting from the serenity, balance and traction offered by the superbly judged Sport setting. Track is what I would call a Hockenheim setting, and is ideal for billiard table smooth racetracks. I would bet that the McLaren is faster and more settled in Sport rather than Track on the bumpy, cambered Nurburgring Nordschleife. However, devouring the tarmac with ridiculous ease is only part of the story. With good visibility from behind the wheel, the MP4-12C feels smaller and more nimble than its rivals on the road, reinforcing its case as a daily driver.

108

DRIVE ON!

While its helm may not offer up the tactile delights of a Carrera GT or Enzo, the two best power-assisted steering systems I have ever encountered, neither does it have any issues. Weighted on the lower side of medium, it is perfectly calibrated to the turn-in rate of the chassis. Thus, I found it easy to take this car to the limit of adhesion through a slalom on the airfield runway straight off the bat, and never had cause to think about it on either road or track. Thus, driver and car can bond quickly, exemplifying the concept of man and machine in perfect harmony. The 8.5J x 19 and 11.0J x 20-inch, lightweight, forged alloys shod with 235/35ZR19 and 305/30ZR20 rubber look good, and bestow the McLaren with enormous levels of mechanical grip. Pushing harder and harder on the famed Top Gear track, the MP4-12C got better the faster I went. Driven with real purpose, first in Sport and then in Track modes, it astounded with its front-end grip, its ability to deploy its awesome power, and its intuitive balance. Understeer is minimal, and of the stabilising kind, unless you really pile into a bend carrying too much speed. Then, the Brake Steer electronic wizardry helps the chassis to negate understeer, and aid traction on the way out. This is a car that helps an average driver and makes a good one look like a hero. Even on the bald limit, with the safety systems loosened up, the MP4-12C seemed like it would never run out of

109

DRIVE ON!

talent, and always came back with eloquent answers to the probing questions I asked of its chassis. Eventual breakaway at the rear is so progressive and so well telegraphed compared to other mid-engined cars, you would have to be fast asleep to not catch it. Speaking of on-the-limit performance, the brakes are also spectacularly effective. Easy to modulate and full of feel on the road, the bespoke, lightweight, steel rotor and alloy calliper system from Brembo/AP Racing saves weight over a conventional design, making the ceramic option seem like an expensive extravagance. To test their mettle to the full, I did a simulated emergency stop from 160km/h on the runaway. The built-in, anti-dive feature of the active damping, and the air brake effect created by the rear spoiler rising to its maximum angle, help to keep weight transfer in check, all things that enhance braking performance. The McLaren scrubbed off speed like a pair of big anchors had been thrown out, and with our velocity rapidly falling away, I removed both hands from the wheel. We stopped dead straight with no drama. Impressive stuff.

There are times when sheer power alone is not enough, and while the McLaren beats the Ferrari in the chassis department, it loses points on sheer charisma in the engine department. No turbocharged motor has the razor sharp throttle response of a good normally aspirated one, least of all one as brilliant as the Ferrari’s. So while the McLaren V8 motor beats its Italian rival for torque and perceived potency, the naturally aspirated Ferrari engine is snappier to respond, with a more visceral sound and feel. Even in Track mode, when the MP4-12C’s otherwise purposeful soundtrack is at its best, it is simply not as spine tingling as the Ferraris. Perhaps, if McLaren had chosen to make a naturally aspirated motor as well, these Formula One competitors would be trading points right down to the wire in this area too. However, the depth and breadth of the McLaren MP412C’s talent are simply astonishing. While it may not be perfect in a couple of areas at this point in time, as a complete package, this new British contender rewrites the supercar script so convincingly that rivals will be hard pressed to match its unique spread of abilities any time soon. Say goodbye to the Blade The blades on conventional electric fans literally chop the air, which means the airflow is uneven, causing unpleasant buffeting. Dyson Air Multiplier fans have no blades. Instead air is accelerated through an annular aperture set within the loop amplifier. This creates a jet of air, which passes over an airfoil-shaped ramp that channels its direction. Surrounding air is drawn into the airflow. No blades means no need for a grille; so it’s safe and simple to clean. And because its motor is at its base, Dyson Air Multiplier fans can be tilted with a touch, unlike a conventional top-heavy fan, which needs to be positioned with two hands and can topple easily. dyson.com

Argentina is associated with succulent steak, passion and seductive dancing. Without the need to travel thousands of miles, we have the luxury of fantastic authentic Argentinean cuisine here in Marbella at Tango Restaurante.

L

ocated in the heart of Puerto Banús, opposite Antonio Banderas Square, this exquisite eatery has built up quite a reputation over the years. Steeped in history, Tango Restaurante is known for its attention to detail and mouth-watering menu. Owner Juan Carlos, who was born in Argentina, has restaurant experience flowing through his veins, as his father owned and ran a hotel and restaurant while Juan Carlos was growing up. After relocating to Puerto Banús 25 years ago, he opened his first Argentinean restaurant, El Churasco, followed by Tango Restaurante, and has been providing excellent service in Marbella for over 20 years. His manager Paco has similar experience and will always greet you with a beaming smile, ensuring the restaurant maintains a healthy crowd of returning regulars.

reputation for having the best solomillo and entrecote in the area. The extensive menu is never-ending, with many different steak dishes to savour. Rib eye or fillet, sirloin or t-bone, there are a wealth of delectable delights on offer. We had the privilege of sampling the signature solomillo and entrecote. The former was succulent and bursting with flavour, whilst the entrecote had a firm texture, was wonderfully juicy and was cooked to perfection. The side dishes of buttery mash, creamed spinach and tender asparagus flawlessly complemented the steak dishes. You don’t have to be a steak lover to enjoy your dinner at Tango; there are many other delightful dishes available. We also sampled crispy goats’ cheese in filo pastry with flower honey and apple sauce. This starter was light and refresh-

ing, exactly what any diner needs before a juicy steak dish. Another of the starters, salmon gravadlax, with tartare of salmon, drizzled with mustard sauce was divine, and the classic prawn cocktail dish was given a modern twist and served draped over a Guadeloupe melon. To complete our gastronomic journey, we feasted on Tango’s traditional Argentinean crepe with dulce de leche, created by slowly caramalising condensed milk and sugar. My fellow guest, who comes from South America, assured me that the skilled kitchen staff had perfected the art of this quintessential Latin dish. Tango’s extensive wine list allows each diner to sample a taste of Argentina. I must admit the only experience I have with wines is drinking them whilst out for drinks with the girls (always order-

ing the house special). However, with Juan Carlos’ dedicated experience, an Arzuaga was recommended. This Ribero del Duero perfectly complemented the aromas and textures of the steaks. Also, Protos, Muga and many other reservas were available. If you aren’t into wines they also have a wide selection of beers, spirits and soft drinks to enjoy. This authentic restaurant has to be experienced to be truly appreciated. We expect Tango Restaurante will maintain its traditions and will still be serving excellent Argentinean meats for many years to come.

A combination of outdoor dining on the terrace and the option of eating inside the restaurant means Tango can cater for private parties and groups. The interior is designed in authentic Argentinian style and the paintings are provided by the owner’s close friends in Madrid, where he previously owned a restaurant before dedicating his time to Tango. The decorative dishes are so fresh and clean they are almost like a work of art. It seemed shameful to ruin the design of the plates, but we simply couldn’t resist. This is credit to the chefs, one Argentinean specialising in the large charcoal grill, the other, a former employee at the famous La Fonda Restaurant in Marbella. caviar or, to impress dinner guests, top with Kalix Löjrom. Garnish with dill and lemon. Serve with Salmon Gravadlax and Kalix Löjrom. The finest, pure, natural caviar from northern Scandinavia. This Swedish version of Russian or Iranian caviar is orange, light in taste, subtle and not as pushy as its eastern cousins. It is served together with crème fraiche, finely chopped red onions, dill and lemon on toast bread, or on small blinis. It is perfectly matched with a glass of chilled bubbly; good caviar and good champagne go hand-in-hand.

Amy Winehouse 14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011 The talented and troubled pop star was found dead in her London home, aged 27. An ambulance was called to Camden Square late afternoon on 23 July 2011, where Winehouse was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the Grammy award winner’s death was not confirmed as Society Marbella went to print; however, it is believed to be the result of a suspected drug overdose. The devastating death of such a talent comes following the cancellation of her tour in Serbia due to a series of shambolic performances under the influence of drink and drugs. The singer’s US recording label have released a statement following the shocking news, “We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer.” Amy was last seen in public on Wednesday July 20 when she appeared on stage with her protégée and goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield. She opted not to accompany Dionne vocally but her pride was expressed for the 14 year old as she prompted the audience to purchase Dionne’s new album. Our thoughts are with Amy’s family and friends at this upsetting time.
