Long Live the King

Amonth that saw the sad passing of our Queen heralded the next chapter of monarchy, as King Charles III seamlessly stepped into his mother’s shoes, (other than having a hissy fit at a leaky biro). Early signs are positive and we can perhaps hold out hope of new beginnings and a fresh impetus with a new king and prime minister at the helm. Welsh singer and former Society cover star Katherine Jenkins was chosen to be the voice behind the new king’s anthem, providing the finality to a wonderful reign of a remarkable lady.

Our October cover star has also made quite a transition. Ex-foo tballer Matt Smith came to fame as a nation’s favourite doctor in Dr. Who , and is now gracing our screens in the new blockbuster series House of the Dragon

Although it still seems early to be featuring Halloween, our Málaga based fashion shoot from Anna Ulman does just that. MATT SMITHMATT SMITH

Born Matthew Robert Smith on October 28, 1982, in Northampton, England to Lynne and David Smith, Matthew attended a state secondary school, Northampton School for Boys. He shone at an early age playing for youth football teams Northampton Town F.C., Nottingham Forest F.C. and Leicester City F.C. although his dreams of playing professional football came to a halt after a serious back injury. Talking in later years of this time Matt shared, “It was a tough time because I just felt unfulfilled, to be honest, I felt like I was so certain that that is what I was going to do. It was very difficult for me to tell people that I had been released because the vain part of me was like, I am that and I am the footballer, you know, and at school I was the footballer and suddenly I wasn’t that.”

In school, Smith’s drama teacher suggested he take part in the school production of Twelve Angry Men , a role which sparked his love of acting. He went on to join the National Youth Theatre in London, where his first roles on the stage included those in Murder in the Cathedral and The Master and Margarita. He then went on to study drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia.

Smith made his television debut in Sally Lockhart Mysteries: The Ruby in the Smoke alongside Billie Piper, before starring as Danny Foster in the series Party Animals, a BBC drama series about fictional parliamentary advisors and researchers. However, it was his casting as the lead in the popular sci-fi TV series Doctor Who that shot him to stardom. At age 26, Matt was the youngest actor to be cast in the role replacing the muchloved David Tennant. At first, people were a little sceptical as to whether such a young actor could successfully embody the famous role but he won over audiences with his sheer talent and went on to star in 49 episodes of Doctor Who before leaving in the momentous 50th anniversary special.

Smith reunited with Piper in the steamy drama The Secret Diary of A Call Girl, based on the blog of Belle De Jour, which ran for four years. He also appeared as Dan Twentyman in Moses Jones a short run detective drama alongside Dennis Waterman and Shaun Dingwall. In 2012, Smith was signed up by Ryan Gosling for a role in Gosling’s directorial debut feature How to Catch A Monster which was later retitled Lost River. Smith played the character of Bully, a sadistic criminal and the film’s primary antagonist.

In January 2019, he joined Sony’s SpiderMan Universe spin-off film, Morbius as Milo, a living vampire.

Next Matt appeared in the Edgar Wright thriller Last Night in Soho alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin McKenzie and Diana Rigg. In 2020, Smith was cast as Daemon Targaryen in the series House of the Dragon, a prequel to the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones created by Ryan J. Condal and original series author George R. R. Martin. The series premiered just recently in August 2022; set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, Matt’s character was the most experienced warrior of his time, wielding the Valyrian steel blade Dark Sister, a prince and warlord known for his skill and prowess in battle. shared, “We’re trying to make a show that’s entertaining on lots of different levels and has a similar scope and ambition to the previous show, in many respects,” he continued. “But obviously, you’re never going to be able to recreate the success of Game of Thrones, because that was a very particular point in time. It was its own unique entity.”

Critics and fans have singled out Smith’s performance in the new show as one of the strongest draws of the series, which debuted to a record 10 million strong audience and will no doubt continue to be the talk of the season. Many viewers have shared that they feel Matt deserves an Emmy for his efforts after receiving continuous praise for his sublime performance so far.

Biloxi is known for its beaches, resorts, and stand-out seafood. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption, gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, drugs... even contract killings; all controlled by a small group of mobsters, many of them rumoured to be members of the Dixie Mafia. Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends. But as teenagers, their lives took them in different directions. Keith’s father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to ‘clean up the Coast.’ Hugh’s father became the ‘Boss’ of Biloxi’s criminal underground. Keith went to law school and followed in his father’s footsteps. Hugh preferred the nightlife and worked in his father’s temper in him, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her.

Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. MEGHAN TRAINOR – Takin’ It Back

Grammy Award-winning global superstar, Meghan Trainor is back with her much-awaited fourth full-length album. With Takin’ It Back, Meghan made a conscious decision to return to her roots with the signature sound she introduced in her 2015 debut. Talking of her latest work she shared, “I tried to do the doo-wop feel I had at the beginning of my career, but the 2022 version of it. This is from the new Meghan who is a wife and mum with a baby. This is from me right now. I decided to give the people what they want, but with my spices added to it. I wanted to make my Title 2.0.” To achieve this goal Meghan worked closely with Gian Stone, Federico Vindver, Sean Douglas, and little brother Justin Trainor out of her home studio. Taylor Swift’s tenth studio album, Midnights is set to showcase a brand-new collection of what the pop star has been working on through her sleepless nights. Taylor revealed the album is ‘a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face.” The first side has six tracks and the second seven, adding up to Taylor’s lucky number; 13. CARLY RAE JEPSEN – The Loneliest Time

The Loneliest Time is the fifth studio album from Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen. “I’m quite fascinated by loneliness,” the ‘Call Me Maybe’ singer announced, “It can be really beautiful when you turn it over and look at it,” she continued. “Just like love, it can cause some extreme human emotions.” The Loneliest Time is Jepsen’s first album since her 2019 work, Dedicated. The new album is being released by 604/Schoolboy/Interscope and collaborators include Tavish Crowe, Rostam Batmanglij, Bullion, Captain Cuts, John Hill, Kyle Shearer, and Alex Hope.

Lewis Capaldi has shared the news he suffers from Tourette’s Syndrome. The singer described his diagnosis as a “new thing”, explaining that he has not “really learnt much about it” yet, but has received Botox injections in his shoulder to alleviate the tics and that “worked for a bit”. Lewis explained that when the doctors first told him he has the condition, it made “so much sense”. “When I look back at my interviews from like 2018, I can see that I’m doing it,” he said. “But it comes and goes. I’ll go sometimes months without doing it. “I thought I had some horrible degenerative disease, so I’ll take Tourette’s.” Lewis told his fans that “some days it’s more painful than others”, and it can be quite uncomfortable, but he feels it “looks a lot worse than it is”.

FLYING up Solo LONG TO REIGN OVER US

Timothée Chalamet has become the first man to cover British Vogue solo in a stunning photoshoot. The Oscar nominee is the magazine’s first male cover star in its 106-year history. Although British Vogue has previously featured male celebrities like Brooklyn Beckham, Riz Ahmed and Jesse Williams on its cover, Timothée is the first man to do so on his own. Back in 2020, Harry Styles became the first man to cover the publication’s American counterpart solo, in a photo-shoot that saw him posing in a Gucci jacket and matching dress. Playing down the cover in an accompanying interview, Timothée commented; “The nature of the world now, you know... It felt right to not make it too statement-y.”

Former cover star Katherine Jenkins, who we had the pleasure of interviewing for Society Marbella in February 2015, was invited to record the first version of God Save the King following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The last time Jenkins sung God Save the Queen in front her majesty was during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier in the year. Talking of the honour of recording the first version for King Charles, Katherine shared, “It made us here think about what has happened and made us look to the future and think what is ahead of us and the country. I think King Charles III will make an absolutely fantastic king, I hope people will enjoy to sing this anthem.” The classical singer explained she took a moment’s silence and prayed before recording God Save the King. “We prayed for King Charles III and then I sang it. “It was really, really emotional, but obviously a huge honour to be asked to do that.”

David Beckham joined the crowds in Westminster queueing for 13 hours to see the Queen lying-in-state. The former England footballer kept a low profile in a dark flat cap and shirt as he waited to view the late monarch. Despite having the opportunity to skip the queues a source claimed that he wanted to ‘be like everyone else’, because his grandfather, who was a royalist, would have waited just as long to honour the Queen. David was brought up in a royalist family – the kind who would stand to attention when the national anthem came on and so he opted to see the Queen like any other member of the public. ‘We all want to be here together. We all want to experience something where we celebrate the amazing life of our Queen and I think something like this today is meant to be shared together,’ he said, ‘It’s special to be here, to celebrate and to hear the different stories that people have to say. Brittany Snow and ‘Selling The OC’ star Tyler Stanaland have split after two years of marriage. “After time and consideration, Tyler and I have made the difficult decision to separate,” the actress, 36, shared on Instagram alongside a black-and-white photo of the pair. It appears Tyler’s new show and status was the cause of the split. “Everyone who knows Tyler and Brittany knows she wasn’t comfortable with the show,” a source revealed “That’s why he did his best to keep his marriage and the show separate, but it only backfired.” A second source shared, “The show basically destroyed their marriage. Brittany was not happy with what she saw.”

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are expecting their fourth child together. The pregnant Gossip Girl actress debuted her baby bump recently. The couple are already parents to three daughters, James, seven, Inez, five and Betty, two. Last year Ryan opened up about the importance of spending time with his kids, noting that it was a major factor in his decision to take a break from acting. He shared, “The biggest thing for me, is that I don’t want to miss time with my kids. “Now that they’re in school, they have a somewhat normal schedule. I think it’s totally important for their development and I really enjoy being a present dad,” he explained. Reynolds and Lively have been together since 2010 when they met and starred together in Green Lantern.

Russell is the perfect host as he tries to change perceptions of heroes and villains in the funniest way possible, along with his hilarious guests he provides plenty of banter.

Episodes discuss the latest news from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League in a lively atmosphere with plenty of laughs. Social media platform TikTok has blown up overnight, and with 1 billion active users across 154 countries, and growing, companies are signing up in their droves to create brand awareness. Global corporations have cottoned on to its popularity and are promoting products on there by waging successful marketing campaigns, reaching different demographics and, therefore, a wider audience. Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok (called Douyin in China) was launched in 2016 and it has come a long way in a short space of time. It has recently been valued at 50 - 75 billion dollars! Originally, it mainly appealed to Gen Z (9 to 24-year- olds) because of the entertainment value and dopamine buzz, but its content creators and viewers are now multigenerational. It’s famous for dances going viral, challenges, music, and comedy in a short-form video format, which is ideal for today’s quick consumer market. Part of its appeal is the algorithm, as you are only fed the type of content that you are interested in. Here, we look at the brands that are realising the advertising potential by tapping into the phenomenon and exploding on TikTok in 2022…

The budget airline is killing it on TikTok with a talking plane and popular celebrities in the form of memes; they have accrued 1.8m followers and 18.9m likes. They are also extremely active in the comment section of the app, which delivers a more personal experience and connection for their customers, so they aren’t just a faceless brand. An amusing post deals with the issue of holidaymakers thinking that they have booked themselves a window seat but failing to check the seating plan on the Ryanair website, the caption reads, “It’s not me, it’s you”. The content creators for the airline utilise popular social media personalities Charli D’Amelio and Khaby Lame, the former is the highest earner on the platform and the latter is the most followed, by pitching their anthropomorphised plane as number one on the app. Their videos are humorous, cheeky and known for sassing their customer base.

Starbucks

The world’s most famous coffee chain has begun its autumn campaign on TikTok. It is Pumpkin Spice Lattes all around as baristas and coffee lovers post videos tasting sessions of new * insert Americanism * ‘Fall’ flavours along with dance routines. Officially known as PSL Season in Starbucks-land, the new menu includes an apple crisp flavour alongside the Starbucks staple pumpkin spice, which comes in various guises. The account has 1.9m followers and 10m likes; it mainly relies upon its iconic products and customer loyally posting their love for Starbucks rather than any trends or gimmicks. The result is that the account looks like it is run by the baristas and customers, creating a cosy vibe, it also gets their unique and custom-made drinks trending, while encouraging experimentation with flavours – the possibilities are endless!

Duolingo

The free language education app has a TikTok account with its famous green owl mascot featuring in the videos. They have 4.8m followers and a whopping 95.2m likes. Their content is educational as well as fun and occasionally topical – gay pride was celebrated by asking users if they should change their name to Duolingay. The account has 46 viral videos, meaning each has a view count of 1 million or higher. Duolingo’s social media strategy is to scroll through content on the site, compile a report and pitch ideas, leaning into current trends. Another element of their strategy is to respond to comments, often with a video. Duo, the app’s owl mascot, once responded to a comment from Mcdonald’s with a dig at their famously non-functioning ice cream machine. Brands aren’t always just about corporate tactics, they also know how to bring the fun, thus, bringing in the followers too. The multilingual owl is known for turning the account into more of a sitcom with a string of silly videos. I don’t remember language lessons being like that at school!

The French cookware brand has a different and more serious approach (as you would probably expect). They showcase their premium pots and pans by filming recipes and how-to-use videos, which is an effective way to advertise. Helpfully, they teach you how to pronounce their brand name on there too, it’s ‘Luh-Cru-Say’ in case, like me, you’ve always wondered. Their classy and informative slant to TikTok content has racked up 129.7K followers and 1m likes. Le Creuset’s recipe ideas include casseroles and pasta dishes, and their tutorials will tell you how to look after your utensils and crockery, you will also see the latest products including a rather sexy video of a range of new arrivals in the sea salt colour. The Le Creuset account is a more grown-up, sensible vibe at odds with the usual TikTok fare, but it appeals to an altogether different market, the company obviously know their audience.

SEEING RED

So you voted Brexit and that worked out well. The NHS is getting that extra £350 million a week the bus told you about which is why waiting lists have been eradicated, the medical equipment is now gold plated and the canteen food is fit for humans. Britain’s GDP has grown by 3.8% which is awesome... of course the EU’s has grown by 8.5% in the same period but “SHUT UP cos blue passports!” (Now produced in Poland by a French-Dutch company). Half the south coast smells of lorry driver urine because freight queues now rival those at Chessington on a weekend in half term. We’re onto our 4th PM in six years and national confidence in “strong and stable” political leadership is at a similar level as the pound – down 18% since before the referendum, with supply issues, searing inflation and staffing chasms shutting businesses left, right and centre and causing widespread plc takeovers by foreign cash (really “Taking back control” there...). The country (and Union at large) is more divided then ever, with most people below the age at which a garden centre becomes a fun day out deeply resentful that their rights to freely travel to or live in countries which don’t smell of angry lorry driver wee have been snatched away by a generation who believed Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees Voldemogg and a big red bus over every expert economist EVERYWHERE. All of that is fine because, well, blue passports, but the fact that immigrants are still risking their lives to reach our shores is obviously unacceptable.

Especially if you read the Daily Mail. “Coming over here, trying to sniff up all our lorry driver piss smell - It’s frankly too much to bear.”

Fear not though, there may be a simple solution for those who feel we haven’t succeeded in isolating ourselves enough already. Somewhere no inflatable dinghy full of foreigners will ever reach...

Mars.

With the US publicly stating their intent to put humans on the red planet by 2033 and the world’s richest man Elon Musk similarly committed (he probably should be), we might be just a blue passport’s expiry date away from interplanetary commutes. In galactic terms, at a distance of just 34 million miles, Mars is a mere stone’s throw from us. Although it’s a dusty, cold, desert world with a thin atmosphere, it’s a preferable destination to the lead-melting 475°C surface temperatures of our other neighbour Venus, the toxic gases of Neptune or the 1000mph winds of Saturn... and don’t get me started on Uranus. If we wanted to live somewhere that’s essentially become its own punchline, we’d just stay in Little England.

One small obstacle to life on Mars is the inherent lack of oxygen, which constitutes just 0.13% of the planet’s atmosphere. Any human visitor stepping out of their space suit would quickly suffocate, though possibly not before the extremely low atmospheric pressure literally boiled their blood. Alas, Daily Mail readers used to their blood boiling stand no better chance of surviving this ordeal than even the youngest, healthiest non-bigot. Nevertheless, scientists have just revealed they may hold the keys to part of the solution (“they” being the scientists, not Daily Mail readers).

Mars rover has been successfully mining oxygen from the carbon dioxide rich Martian atmosphere since February 2021. The lunchbox sized instrument has so far zabeen tested on seven experimental runs to gauge its effectiveness and reliability in a variety of atmospheric conditions, which remain changeable on the Red Planet. Tested both day and night and through different Martian seasons, when atmospheric pressure fluctuates substantially, each run successfully hit its target of 6g of oxygen production per hour – the same as a modest tree back home. This was achieved through MOXIE inhaling and

passing the dusty Martian air through a HEPA filter, compressing and superheating it to 800°C before running the CO2 over a nickel-based catalyzed cathode. In a process known as solid oxide electrolysis, the carbon dioxide is separated into oxygen ions and carbon monoxide. The system then purifies and combines the singular oxygen atoms to produce O2 – breathable oxygen. Despite all the big words, it’s a scientifically straightforward enough process. The real flex of course is doing it on Mars.

Historically, MOXIE represents the very first example of “in situ resource utilization” whereby a planet’s own materials are harvested, processed and redeployed, rather than transported from off-world at a far larger, essentially prohibitive energy cost. If

operating in space requires anything, it’s efficiency. It’s like, don’t just gaslight a nation with a big red bullshit bus. USE that same bus to then cart a load of desperate immigrants to Rwanda.... run over some benefits scroungers, gays and hippies on the way back. Similar vibe.

The MIT researches will continue to push the production of the initial MOXIE unit to test capacity with the eventual goal to scale the technology 100fold, creating an “Oxygen factory” containing larger instruments capable of continuous, rather than intermittent running, producing enough oxygen to fill the ancillary vehicles, suits and edifices necessary if we are ever to expand on and populate the currently inhospitable planet.

What led you to create this start-up?

We met each other at the Les Roches university in Marbella. Coming from different backgrounds and countriesUkraine & Italy - both of us faced the same issue, we weren’t particularly passionate about studying hospitality. After doing some research, we realised that it was a common issue; many young people would choose a university course when graduating from school without understanding their interests and what they would like to accomplish in their professional life. It became obvious to us that high school students would benefit from receiving guidance before making a university decision. We didn’t want others to repeat our mistake and lose precious time and money, and that’s how Lifechanging was born.

Michael Rodziewicz, CEO of BRIGHT Marbella, was born and grew up in Poland, and has always looked at the bigger picture, although sometimes the picture starts small. When he first met Jason Harris, CEO of UDesign, he just needed some help in designing his home in Marbella, but the meeting of these two exceptional minds, both focussed on design as the driving force behind all residential construction and development, led directly to the partnership we have today.

Michael brought a lifetime of experience in the luxury development field to the Marbella partnership, and he sees design as the primary expression of creativity. “A great home”, he says, “should improve your quality of life, probably more than any other single factor. That’s why every villa in Vista Lago is both a stunning property and a unique home. Our whole way of thinking when it comes to property development is design-driven, and the design, in turn, is an expression of creativity, but always in the service of producing a certain feeling, a canvas for a lifestyle.”

This philosophy is paying great dividends, as not only have 60% of the villas in Vista Lago already been reserved, but earlier this year the development won two top awards at the International Property Awards – Best International Residential Development and Best Architecture (Multiple Residence), Europe.

As developer, one of Michael’s tasks is to keep the project on an even keel, financially speaking. This means being good at business, but to achieve the success he now enjoys, he must also have a comprehensive knowledge of design and the rare ability to always know exactly what will work where. Quite simply, there is no room for mistakes at this level.

AND WHAT A CONCEPT IT IS!

A rare meeting point of exceptional creative design, luxury construction, state-of-theart sustainability and a location second to none, providing the best views over the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa from virtually every room in every one of the 18 villas that make up the development.

When Michael first stood on the virgin plot and looked around him, his imagination went into overdrive. Now, looking at the same views from the same place, he has the satisfaction of knowing that dreams can come true if you work hard enough on them. “For me it is a labour of love,” he says, “and in spite of the hard work involved, it’s a real pleasure to see it all come together.”

All the villas have been designed and decorated differently. Not just tweaked to appear different at a glance, but very different, both inside and out, as if each were a separate entity totally independent of the next, which indeed they all are. If they have one thing in common, apart from each being exquisitely designed and built (and excusing the apparent contradiction in terms), it is the very fact that they are all different.

“Inside each villa,” Jason says, “nothing stands in the way of the view. The windows slide into the wall, to bring the living area out into the terrace, becoming an extension of the house itself. Even closed, you see very little of the window frame. All are open plan, with no walls in the living spaces and columns reduced to the minimum. All the furniture in the villas has been chosen or designed exclusively for them, either by UDesign or by other top designers.”

Any guests staying in a Vista Lago villa will certainly come away thinking: I love that lamp, or that piece of furniture. I’ll go out and buy one like it. But they can’t, because what they see and admire is not available on the open market. What is used in these villas is an excellent demonstration of knowledge of the use of new materials and products that have rarely been used in such ways before, either in private residences or in development homes.

Interior design does not accurately describe how these interiors were designed, because that suggests a group of designers coming in once construction work is finished and designing the interiors. Nothing could be further from the truth. These interiors grew with the building itself, in some cases preceding it, with some rooms designed around a single piece of furniture that existed before the villa itself was designed.

Each of the 18 villas has been individually designed and clients can choose both the villa they want and the furniture and fittings in it, or in any of the other villas. There is a contemporary style to suit everyones’ taste, from bold and bright, to elegant and classical. How time flies! It seems like only yesterday when we were getting set for summer!. After days of travel, dinners with friends, leisure time and enjoying our families it is time to return to our homes, back to our routine, with renewed energy and optimism.

Perhaps the opportunity to live in other places during the summer has made us reflect on aspects of our own homes that we could improve. It must be practical for day-to-day use (drop the keys, take one last look at the mirror before going out, hang up the coat, organize the shoes...). IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS BEFORE FERRARI ADOPTED TURBOCHARGING FOR ITS FLAT PLANE CRANK V8 ENGINES, YOU COULD EXPECT A MACHINE THAT LOOKS AS PURPOSEFUL AS THE NOVITEC ROSSO 488 N-LARGO TO SPIT FIRE AND BRIMSTONE FROM THE MOMENT YOU PUSHED THE RED START BUTTON.

Today however, things are more cool, calm and collected, and despite its aggressive visage the 488 N-Largo is the epitome of aural restraint thanks to the muffling effect of those two big twin-scroll IHI turbochargers and their attendant pipework and intercoolers.

That is not to say that this red bombshell, the second Novitec Rosso car to wear the N-Largo name, does not have a soundtrack worthy of comment. Coming across as a slightly amplified version of the factory 488’s sonic concerto, with a touch more basso profundo, the Novitec sport exhaust is tuned more to reduce back pressure and liberate a few more cavallini than to set any new records for spine tingling ear candy. You can thank the vagaries of the European driveby noise regulations for this.

Of course that is with the exhaust systems electronically controlled flaps closed. With them open the glorious wail of the flat-plane crank motor that culminates in a racecar like scream at the top end

of the rev band tells you that this a thoroughbred Ferrari, but one whose dual characters you can select at the flick of a switch.

The Novitec Rosso engine conversion is based around two Novitec N-tronic plug and play control modules, which are integrated into the cars electronics and remap its fuelling, spark and boost pressure parameters.

For optimum output and a more inspirational soundtrack a fully insulated Novitec high performance exhaust reduces backpressure, and in its most sophisticated form is made from Inconel. Electronic sound management is an option, as are 100-cell sport catalysts.

To extract 102 extra horses from a naturally aspirated Ferrari V8 motor would take a lot of expensive internal work beyond the 25 or 30hp you might eke out from ECU and exhaust tweaks. Thus, in the bang for buck stakes, forced aspiration is a godsend for power and torque junkies.

TORQUE TALK 80

Another advantage of fully mapped fuelling, ignition and boost is that you can tailor the power and torque delivery exactly how you want it. Most performance car manufacturers like AMG, BMW M, and Porsche adjust their torque curves to peak fairly low in the rev band and then plateau through the mid-range.

While this delivers maximum flexibility in daily driving and is also good for fuel economy - high revs and big throttle openings clearly are not - this has become the default way to arrange things in a world laced with increasingly restrictive fuel economy and emissions legislation.

The Stage 2 Novitec engine upgrade delivers 772hp at 7,950rpm, a significant increase over the stock factory output of 670hp at a screaming 8,000rpm. Meanwhile, the torque curve is bolstered by 132Nm, taking its peak to a whopping 892Nm at 3,250rpm, raising top speed to 342km/h.

In practice this means that the outright maximum torque of 760Nm is only realised at 3,000rpm in seventh gear, with the torque curves in fourth, fifth and sixth gears progressively ramping up to that level on the way.

With even more power and torque on tap, the Novitec engineers wisely chose to closely mirror the factory power and torque curves, and retain this important feature. Thus delivery feels just like the factory standard 488 except for the fact that you are going down the road even faster for a given throttle opening.

This level of power and torque would be impressive propelling a big near two ton Mercedes-AMG, but when you consider that the 488GTB tips the scales with a comparatively low kerb weight of 1,475kg, then you can really expect fireworks. And thanks to its ultra-light but very strong carbonfibre bodywork extensions, and larger forged wheels, the Novitec Rosso N-Largo is no heavier than the standard car.

With such a groundswell of torque on tap at low crankshaft speeds, a relatively relaxed part throttle demeanour means that you don’t have to use much accelerator travel to build up substantial speed in the blink of an eye. The N-Largo’s 892Nm of twist rockets you from 50km/h to 80km/h with the very little pressure on the right pedal, so you have to have your wits about you in areas with low speed limits.

Where you can use full throttle in the lower gears the Novitec 488 N-Largo punches hard, but in a smooth and progressive way. This means while it feels rocket ship fast it is not at all a wild animal despite the big numbers jumping off its spec sheet.

The 458 and 488 have always impressed with their exceptionally good ride quality. Even with its larger wheels and tyres the N-Largo suffers little degradation in its ability to absorb road surface imperfections. And that despite the 35mm lowered ride height applied by the sport springs.

Out on the fast and sweeping Bavarian country roads around Novitec Rosso’s headquarters, the N-Largo rode surprising well in Sport mode despite its bigger wheels and tyres and uprated springs. Its impressive comfort levels are totally at odds with the extrovert eyeball grabbing exterior looks of this German-tuned Italian supercar.

However, with a stock 488 already in danger of scraping its underside on speed bumps and ramps, ticking the box for Novitec’s optional hydraulic front lift system that raises the nose by 40mm should be a no brainer. This automatically reverts to normal ride height at the push of a button or when you reach 80km/h.

The carbon-fibre wide body kit is as impressive for its fit and finish as it is for the way it aesthetically integrates with the 488GTB to produce the look of a limited edition factory special. That said, limited edition and special are the operative words here, as Novitec Rosso will only ever produce 11 each of the 488 GTB and 488 Spider, thus preserving their exclusivity.

The kit gives the N-Largo an overall width of 2,009mm, which is 140mm wider than a stock 488 at the rear axle. Novitec created bespoke wheel arch liners, which fit the wider arches perfectly to prevent undue aerodynamic disturbance, and make space for the precisely calculated width, diameter and offsets of the 9.0J x 21-inch and 12.0J x 22-inch lightweight Novitec Rosso NF6 NL, threepiece forged wheels shod with 255/30ZR21 and 335/ 25ZR22 tyres.

Starting at the nose, the new front bumper with its low spoiler lip helps to reduce lift and was optimised in the wind tunnel. It is available either painted or left in naked carbon-fibre. The front wings are replaced with the wider N-Largo components,

which feature racecar style vents at the top to help extract heat from the brakes as quickly as possible. To satisfy TUV regulations these have wire mesh stone traps.

The extended side sills help to channel air down the cars lower flanks in a way that reduces turbulence. The wider rear wings incorporate much larger engine air intakes to feed the intercoolers, while the combination of the rear wing and larger underbody diffuser with taller fins generates more downforce at speed.

Carbon-fibre components there for cosmetic reasons only are the covers for the side mirrors, fog-lights, tail lights, rear intake air guides, air outlets, and the triangular side window fillet.

As we have already said, for all its visual bravado and intergalactic pace, the Novitec Rosso 488 N-Largo is a pretty refined beast, and for the vast majority of drivers without the skill set of Fernando Alonso, it is a user-friendly machine that does not have to spike your adrenalin levels every time you get behind the wheel.

You could compare the 488 N-Largo to the 288GTO and F40 since all three have V8 twin-turbo engines in common. There is certainly no getting away from the fact that the N-Largo’s wide body look is inspired by those venerable landmark Ferraris. It even picks up some of their design cues like the air vents on top of its front arches, which Novitec Rosso then re-imagined for the 21st Century.

With 772hp on tap, the N-Largo has just about double the power output of the 395hp 288GTO, and about 300hp more than the 478hp F40. This is a frightening thought until you realise that the enhanced 488 aerodynamics, suspension and braking are also well calibrated to handle the extra performance.

However, an equally significant factor is power delivery. Where this pair of classic twin-turbo Ferraris suffer from old style turbo lag, and it is all too easy for the driver to run out of talent, the progressive power delivery characteristics of the new Ferrari motor and its fantastic chassis and driver aids ensures perfect balance.

SOME WILL SAY THAT WITH ALL THESE DRIVER AIDS TO HELP SAVE THE LESS TALENTED SUCH A CAR IS NO LONGER A CHALLENGE FOR THE EXPERIENCED DRIVER. THE CHALLENGE OF TAMING A WILD BEAST IS ONE THING, BUT THE SENSIBLE WILL ALWAYS SEEK TO HAVE DARWIN’S THEORY WORKING FOR RATHER THAN AGAINST THEM.

On April 1st 2022, nearly two years after it’s planned July 2020 release date, the “Marvel” movie (...in association with Columbia, distributed by Sony...) Morbius finally dropped... like a fucking rock. The Jared Leto-starring vampiric super/anti-hero dud cost in the region of 80 million dollars to produce, a relatively small amount by Marvel standards where $200 million is par for the course, but it’s paltry domestic box office haul of $73 mill was nevertheless an embarrassment to all concerned, particularly given it was actually released TWICE. Despite a smorgasboard of promotional material first time around, pandemically-malnourished audiences still weren’t biting. Nevertheless, Morbius seemed to rise from his early grave to haunt the feeds of the masses, becoming a viral sensation, with countless sarcastic reviews and hilarious memes gleefully spreading ridiculous phrases such as “It’s Morbin’ Time” all over the socials. Desperate execs who’d lost a ton of cokemoney on the film’s initial rollout perceived an opportunity to capitalise on the chatter and re-released their damp squib... to even damper and squibbier results. Making just $289 per screen over its second first weekend, then vanishing like a vampire come dawn, presumably audiences

thought Top Gun: Maverick (or simply staying home and eating pins) was a better option. Unfortunately for the studios, they’d fundamentally misdiagnosed the nature of the memesphere, mistaking merciless pisstaking for genuine interest. A vocal minority of caustic trolls, given agency by a few million shares, had managed to gaslight a studio into thinking their soulless, by-committee snooze-fest was some vibrant phenomenon, when the only phenomenon really phenomenonning was the meme, flexing its ability to elevate cynicism and sarcasm to a massconsumed art form.

Where social media meets memes, it’s all about raising a smile, and if the profiles or fortunes of those being memed

Perhaps the first viral meme, during World War II, the phrase “Kilroy Was Here”, often accompanied with a doodle of a big-nosed man looking over a wall, travelled the world, graffiti’d on buildings, ships, trucks, bridges... Though it’s roots are somewhat contested, it became something of a talisman for the American soldiers who spread it across the globe, a symbol of pride in allied conquest. Like many memes, its “correct” interpretation eluded some, with Hitler reportedly ordering a contingent of men to track down this Kilroy, a supposed “super G.I.” …..Tosser.

These days the meme has become a ubiquitous feature of the online landscape, despite a significant proportion of users still unable to define quite what one is....or how to say it.

The frequent use of humour in memes has been cited as a way they can help us more positively deal with big, scary or depressing issues. Just look for the absolute torrent of memes around elections or seismic global events to gauge how readily we use them to process and share our

feelings at times of stress. Memes don’t just pop up individually on social media. There are literally scores of pages dedicated to collating them, so memephiles of every persuasion can find their happy place, from the good-natured bantersome memes your mum can like on your Facebook wall to some of the frankly more shocking stuff lurking round the darkest corners of Reddit. According to an article in The Telegraph, attention spans in the age of the smartphone have dropped from an average twelve seconds to just eight. I don’t know how this was gauged. If the research involved timing how long people could read The Telegraph’s right-wing nonsense, then no wonder. It may have been something else... Dunno, stopped reading after the headline gave me a way to wrap this piece. Whatever the accuracy of their data, it’s true we are a distracted people, drowning in information, latching onto and sharing the bits which fit our idea of the world, or the way we want it to be.

For good or bad, the ability of memes to distill complex hopes, dreams, fears, anger, beliefs, opinions, nostalgia, entertainment,... culture into a picture and a handful of words means they’re not going anywhere soon.

Astaple of the Marbella culinary scene for almost two decades, Alberts Bar & Grill sits proudly nestled between the boats and the blue skies on the frontline of Cabopino port. Coastal restaurants offering great service, fantastic food or waterfront views are plentiful, but one that offers all of the aforementioned on a daily basis is rare indeed.

On our visit, the lowering September sunshine accompanied us for a late lunch, and our eager and hungry team were invited to sample what seemed like the entire menu! Head chef, Patrice Godino, has skilfully created a feast for both the eye and the palate, with fresh local ingredients to the fore.

A zesty salmon and avocado tartare set on an extra-large blini, topped off with trout roe, was quickly joined by a warm goat’s cheese filo parcel. Cooked to perfection, adorned with toasted almonds and served on a bed of rocket and pink pickled onion!

As if by magic, a bowl of crispy chicken wings then appeared and quickly disappeared before I could even try one! I was now surrounded by lots of guilty looking faces, with tell-tale traces of what used to be wings at the side of their

local ingredients to the fore.

mouths! I wasn’t going to fall for that again, so when the spicy snow crab linguine arrived, I was better prepared. Coated in a sticky sweet and sour sauce, this dish is something everyone should try. Fresh red chili and coriander completed and complimented perfectly.

Staying on the fishy theme, chef Patrice reappeared, (with the dancing eyes and confidence of a chef who knows how good his food is,) this time delivering a plate of Teriyaki salmon, coconut rice and wilted pak choy.

The food just kept coming and almost impossibly it was getting even better. Sitting somewhat smugly now that I hadn’t been given the chance to fill up on those wings, I was able to be less competitive when the pork belly and mash arrived. My team’s hungry hippo approach to shared dishes had now subsided enough for me to round off this dining delight at my leisure. With the succulent pork completely polished off, I was almost the last woman standing, so when spoons arrived for dessert I was the only one smiling, as my sticky faced friends had

viewed this marathon of fine food as a sprint. Chocolate mousse and pear crumble were duly presented and dispatched, (mainly by me,) and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was complete.

This new menu and fully reformed venue are now as good as anything this coast has to offer… try it, you won’t be disappointed.

The 19th Pinotage

Pinotage is the one grape varietal that South Africa can lay full claim to and is now well appreciated as a friendly crowd pleaser and one of the country’s most popular wines.

Pinotage is a socialite when given the chance. Its medium to full-bodied nature makes it easy to pair with almost any good food. Just like golfers need to adapt to the challenges of the course, The 19th Pinotage adapts well with the palate. From sushi and sashimi to curries and barbequed meats.

The 19th Sauvignon Blanc

With a bracing lingering vibrancy, this wine shows enchanting notes of green fig, melon and ripe apple. A summery fragrant nose including blossoms and wildflowers makes it a white fit to finish any green.

A lively fresh acidity and a quirky sherbet-lemon finish round off a crowd-pleasing wine which is great to on its own or with a summer salad.

pimp your Pumpkins

Pumpkins are not just for decorations, they are absolutely delicious too.

When you hear the word pumpkin, you probably think of halloween, table decorations or large orange spheres scattered in a pumpkin patch in fall. Confusingly, there are several varieties in multiple species that are referred to as “pumpkin.

Without any firm botanical rules on what makes a pumpkin different from a squash, the definition varies around the world. Generally speaking, pumpkin refers to a thicker skinned, rounded squash, often with orange flesh.

The three main edible species which includes Pepo the classic orange pumpkins used for halloween lanterns. The C. moschata, which includes butternut squash and a few rounder varieties.

Finally the C. maxima, which includes the kabocha squash (also called the Japanese pumpkin). My favourite! As well as beautiful heirloom varieties that you often find at farmers markets.

Basically all of these varieties are botanically very close to one another, and many taste similar to one another and to other winter squash. They all have similar growing habits, trailing on long vines with large yellow to orange flowers.

Something I realised recently is that pumpkins are picked in autumn and that you can let them mature and use them in winter? This will also somehow make the flesh settle and taste better. I often end up eating my decorative pumpkins that have been scattered around the house in the darker winter months and this is one of my favourite dishes to cook. I am very excited to share one of my favourite recipes with you. Pumpkin Gnocchi with Pumpkin seed pesto. See what I did there? I use the whole pumpkin (Wink wink)

This dish is a version of two of my recipes that have been around for a long time. The pumpkin and potato gnocchi is remarkably easy to make, and it seriously melts in your mouth, just as home made gnocchi should! You’ll definitely notice the difference between this recipe and shop-bought gnocchi, and are bound to impress any dinner guests.

Same goes for the pesto, you can’t really compare home made to shop-bought (although there are now some good ones out there). When you see how easy it is to make this, hopefully it will inspire you to keep a jar in your fridge, like I do at all times. It’s so versatile, it goes beautifully on sandwiches, toast, salads, veggies or soups.

Pumpkin & Potato Gnocchi with Pumpkin Seed Pesto

Makes 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:

350g baking potatoes, baked in oven @ 180ºC for 1 hour

320g pumpkin or butternut squash, deseeded and baked in oven @ 180ºC for 1 hour

125g 00 flour or semolina flour salt & pepper to taste

3 tbsp pumpkin seed pesto (recipe below) handful of basil leaves

For the pumpkin seed pesto (makes 1 jar):

250ml olive oil, plus extra for sealing

120g pumpkin seeds

1 bunch of basil (30g)

1 garlic clove, peeled

1/2 tbsp each salt and black pepper

METHOD:

Scrape out the soft inner of both the pumpkin and the baked potatoes.

Mash the pumpkin and put the potatoes through a potato ricer if you have one, otherwise mash them well, and mix the pumpkin and potatoes together.

Turn out onto a flat surface and mix in the flour and salt & pepper, and knead for a couple of minutes until well combined and you have a consistency that is light and fluffy. Gently roll into 4 long sausage like shapes, about 3cm in diameter.

Cut each long sausage into small square

bite sized gnocchi shapes and push each one gently down with the back of a fork to make an imprint.

If you are not cooking them straight away, you can put these onto a tray lined with baking paper and sprinkle with a little bit of flour, loosely cover and put in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.

Make the pumpkin seed pesto by adding all ingredients to a blender and blitz until combined. The length of time to blitz depends on whether you prefer your pesto smooth or with some texture. Set 3 tbsp pesto aside and decant the rest into a jar, cover with a layer of olive

oil to preserve and keep in the fridge to use for other dishes.

When you are ready to cook the gnocchi, bring a pot of salted water to the boil and gently drop in some gnocchi pieces, they are ready when you see them float to the surface, then remove from the water and drain. You may need to do this in a few batches to not overload the pot.

Once all the gnocchi is cooked and drained, mix in the pumpkin seed pesto and gently stir to coat, top with some basil leaves and serve straight away while still warm.
