PUBLISHER’S LETTER

HAPPY NOVEMBER, ALL!

T

his means that it’s getting very close to Christmas party season, but the traditional hiatus between the summer events and the winter bashes doesn’t seem to have happened this year. So what did we do? Downed a few glasses of Alka Seltzer and kept our party faces on, that’s what – we’re a tough lot at Society! Late September and October featured some magnificent events and we are delighted to feature some of the best in this issue, from Nikki Beach’s fantastic Red Party to Redline Company’s lively 10th birthday celebrations. Over in the UK our friends from Sala Group opened their first British venture and what a night that was! Already creating some tidal waves on the party scene, Sala UK is already known as THE place to see and be seen and boasts an area, the Marqués de Riscal room, which has been decorated and furnished like a traditional Spanish bodega. Visitors from Marbella won’t even have time to feel homesick when they drop in to enjoy a meal or some of the great entertainment that the Sala team has lined up for guests. Take it from me, it’s a fabulous place – see the pictures of the opening party on page 78. One of our new favourite eating places on the Coast - D-wine has some excellent news for diners in the shape of a special deal – one of their gorgeous gourmet main courses and a glass of specially selected vino for less than 15€. Try beating that!

Society Marbella published and produced by: PUBLISHER Andy Clark DESIGNER Constanza Mtz.

We were also pleased to see that Las Dunas, one of our favourite luxury establishments, had reopened. It was very sad driving past that elegant building on Estepona’s Golden Mile and seeing it empty, but now it has been taken over by the global health and well-being brand, NaturHouse. Healthouse is already gaining a name amongst fitness fanatics as one of the best places on the Costa del Sol to enjoy a relaxing break. Our Features Editor Amber O’Shaughnessy went along to see what all the fuss was about and arrived back at the office looking very relaxed – and the air of Zenlike calm lasted all week, we’re pleased to say.

FEATURES EDITOR

During the past decade Marbella has seen a massive increase in the number of Russian people choosing to maintain a holiday home – or primary residence – in the city, so it’s hardly surprising that Russia has a healthy demand for luxury automobiles. Our Ian Kuah recently took the country’s new Top Car Stinger for a spin (lucky devil) and seemed very impressed by the results.

It’s common knowledge that a magazine is only as good as its advertising revenue and we are very proud to be supported by some of the Coast’s finest clinics, clubs, bars, interior decorators, real estate companies and restaurants; two of our advertisers currently hold the Number One and Two position for best restaurant in Marbella on Trip Advisor.

With businesses like that behind us, it’s no wonder that Society is continuing to be the Coast’s most read publication. Till next time… Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Our list of reasons why everyone loves urban pop king Pharrell Williams

10 why we love Reasons

Pharrell Williams By Amber O’Shaughnessy

Rarely a day goes by at the moment without hearing the smooth tones of man of the moment Pharrell Williams on the radio or music TV channels. There is no shying away from the fact that 2014 was his year. However, when we think about it, our love affair with the singer-music producer goes way back. Here are 10 reasons why we LOVE Pharrell Williams.

1 2 3

PLUCKED FROM OBSCURITY

We kid you not; bizarrely enough, it was when Pharrell was performing as part of a four-piece R&B group in his high school talent show, that he was discovered and signed. No showbiz family connections or expensive New York stage school involved, it was actually the most ordinary of circumstances that shot Pharrell into the music industry. And that makes us like him even more.

20

A HAT-TRICK OF HITS

No doubt about it, 2014 was the year for Pharrell, as he brought us a trio of floor filling singles. The success of mega popular track ‘Blurred Lines’ with Robin Thicke was followed by that Daft Punk collaboration ‘Get Lucky’ and then ‘Happy’. All three singles sold over one million copies in the UK in less than a year, a sales feat only previously matched by The Beatles.

SLICK FASHION SENSE

Pictured wearing one of his statement hats or a jacket from the freshest new designer label, Pharrell has serious fashion credentials. It seems everyone knows it too, for in 2005 the 41 year-old was voted “Best Dressed Man in the World”. His attire is bold, daring and oh, so smart.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

A FAMILY MAN

4 6 9 5 7 10

That’s right; Pharrell is one of the few who seems to have mastered happy family life within the world of showbiz. Williams married his long-term girlfriend, model/ designer Helen last year. Not only that, but the pair have the cutest six-yearold called Rocket and word has it that Pharrell wrote the Despicable Me song “Rocket’s Theme” in honour of his son.

AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES EMPLOYER

Pharrell holds no prejudice or preference when it comes to casting girls for his various music videos and live performances. Actually, he makes a deliberate effort to recruit females from a rainbow of ethnicities. See, there’s a chance for all of us to be dancing by his side on the next MTV video.

HUMBLE IN THE FACE OF TALENT

Pharrell recognises talent when he sees it and, what’s more, he’s not afraid to get down on his knees and beg for the opportunity to work with such individuals. On a recent episode of the US version of The Voice, Williams was so

impressed by the singing ability of 15-year-old Katriz Trinidad, he got out of his chair and onto his knees to beg the teenager to join his team. Speaking to the youngster, who sang ‘At Last’ by Etta James, he said, “I’ve been dreaming for an artist like you all my career. I want you so bad and I’ve never done this. I’m on my knees.”

MOST DOWNLOADED TRACK OF ALL TIME

It was the biggest selling single in the UK in 2014 so far and sold 1.42 million copies. Yes, we are, of course, talking about the infectious track ‘Happy’. How could you not love the man who produced such a catchy, feel-good song that seduces listeners of all ages into tapping their feet?!

CHARITABLE MISSIONS

Alongside, his musical endeavours Pharrell dedicates a lot of time to a different kind of project. The music producer is building a $35 million afterschool centre in his home town of Virginia to help keep children off the streets and away from associated vices. His charity ‘From One Hand to Another’ focuses on empowering young people to learn through new technologies, arts and media, offering free after school programmes and ‘Summer of Innovation’ camps.

HE’S JUST GETTING BETTER

At one of Pharrell’s most recent gigs as part of the iTunes Festival at the Roundhouse in Camden, a reporter for The Observer, Kitty Empire, described Williams as “Urban Pop Perfection”, possessing “dazzlingly executed songcraft”. With rumours that the musical genius is currently collaborating with Daft Punk on his next new single, we are certain that Pharrell Williams will continue to dominate the radio airwaves well into the next decade.

MUSICAL MASTERMIND OF THE DECADE

It would be wrong to ignore the fact that Pharrell is responsible for writing and producing some of the music industry’s biggest hits of the decade. The long list of people he has worked with is breathtaking. We’re referring to the likes of Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Britney, Justin Timberlake, Nelly, Kanye West, Madonna, Beyonce, Shakira, JLO, Robin Thicke, Sean Paul, Jay Z and Miley Cyrus to name just a few. The guy has serious musical know-how.

Top 3 Movie

Releases

The Riot Club

Set at the world’s leading university, 10 of the smartest, most arrogant and charismatic Oxford students become members of the coveted Riot Club in this Lone Scherfig movie. It tells the tale of the filthy rich, the spoilt rotten and how decadent and debauched life can become for those individuals who have the world at their feet at the start of adulthood. This film, which stars the dashingly goodlooking Max Irons, Sam Claflin and Douglas Booth, will grip you by the throat and not let go until the final minute. Intoxicating and fascinating.

Fury

Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf star in this film set in the midst of World War II. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened U.S Army sergeant in the 2nd Armoured Division named Wardaddy commands an M4A3E8 Sherman tank called Fury and its five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. This daring portrayal of a little known story breaks serious popular cultural boundaries; any film that endeavours to do so most certainly deserves a watch.

Gone Girl

It was the book of the year in 2013 and now this compelling narrative has been made into an unmissable film. Gone Girl asks the question, how well do you know the person you’re married to? Thankfully, director David Fincher has succeeded in conveying that subtle, chilling edge from the novel in his movie without turning the production into another generic thriller. On his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his beautiful wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media whirlwind, Nick’s portrait of a blissful marriage begins to deteriorate. Soon his lies and strange behaviour have everyone asking the same dark question: did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

My Sister’s Grave by Robert Dugoni

What does a murder do to a family, to an entire small town? These questions spark My Sister’s Grave, a deft blend of murder mystery and legal thriller that will wrench your heart as it takes your breath away.

‘International’ by Chase & Status This single from the British duo’s third studio album, Brand New Machine is drum and bass in style but features that unique Chase & Status sound that propelled the pair into global fame back in 2009

‘Animals’ Maroon 5 Though the video has been widely criticised for glorifying sexual violence, there is no getting way from the fact that this track is infectious and bound to be an instant hit.

‘Burn the Pages’ by Sia This uplifting and lyrically powerful song is another great single from the Australian singer famed for her vocals on the hugely popular track ‘Titanium’ by David Guetta.

24

At the core of My Sister’s Grave is the poignant relationship between Sarah Crosswhite, who vanished without a trace 20 years earlier at the age of eighteen, and Tracy Crosswhite, her older sister by four years, who dedicates her life to finding out the truth about what happened to Sarah. This read will keep you on the edge of your sit until the heart-pounding end.

The Glassblower by Petra Durst-Benning

My father once told me that the happiest sound in the world is the chattering of a family gathered together, and from the moment you begin The Glassblower, that cheerful din reverberates off the page. The lovely Marie sings a beautiful song in the yard while fastidious Ruth leaves breakfast cooking on the stove to run upstairs and tear the covers off Johanna, who can’t bring herself to get out of bed. But the idyllic scene is shattered when the girls discover that their beloved father, who raised them on his own, has passed away in his sleep. The tragedy forces these three young women to band together, and they tap their diverse talents to keep their father’s glass-blowing business going. The Glassblower is the first volume in a trilogy. Petra Durst-Benning’s words shine like the refractions of light and colour in the hot glass the Steinmann sisters craft so elegantly.

Everyone’s Talking About Jolie honoured for campaigning work

Hollywood star, Angelina Jolie has been made an honorary dame by the Queen for her endless campaigning work fighting sexual violence. The actress was presented with the award by the Queen during a private Buckingham Palace ceremony and was then joined by her husband actor Brad Pitt and their six children. Jolie was recognised in the Diplomatic Service and Overseas Birthday 2014 Honours list and received the honorary DBE for services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end sexual violence in war-zones.

Victoria Beckham opens her store in London’s Mayfair The designer and former Spice Girl star has finally opened the doors to her first store in London, something that has been on the cards for a while. “It’s taken about two years,” says Victoria. “We looked at a lot of different spaces but I fell in love with this one – it feels like my second home.”

Cheryl’s new music video Where did Cheryl Fernandez-Versini choose as the location for the promotional video for her new single ‘I Don’t Care’? Marbella, of course! While obviously designed to showcase Cheryl’s latest musical venture, this video also does a great job of showing off the best of ‘Marbs’, as the singer dances on the beach, lives it up on yacht, and plays around by the pool. ‘I Don’t Care’ features on the former Girls Aloud diva’s upcoming fourth studio album, Only Human, scheduled to be released on November the 24th.

26

The shop décor is an imaginative mixture of graphic minimalism and welcoming touches, typified by raw, polished concrete floors and an abundance of epic floor-toceiling mirrors. Of course, the mirrors are essential features – how else can you admire yourself while trying on her full catwalk collection or the (slightly) more affordable Victoria, Victoria Beckham sister line (or ‘VVB’ as she calls it)? Even if you don’t have a model figure you can still have your very own piece of Victoria B with one of her stylish handbags, debut collection of shoes and those sunglasses she is so often spotted wearing.

Línea Directa WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED STATISTICS IN SPAIN Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door.

PEACE-OF-MIND WITH Línea Directa We understand that your peaceof-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

WHEN YOU DISCOVER YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What age can I actually start drawing my pension once switched to a QROPS? Usually from age 55, the same as an equivalent personal pension in the UK. Are QROPS expensive, what are the costs involved? When QROPS first appeared in 2006, the general consensus was that they were only appropriate for pension funds in excess of £200,000. Over the last 8 years we have witnessed more providers entering the market, this has resulted in charges reducing to more realistic and manageable levels. With the recent introduction of ‘Lite” schemes, we now believe that QROPS are cost-effective for transfers of £50,000 and above. What tax will I have to pay on pension income? A QROPS provider must deduct tax according to the laws of the jurisdiction in which the scheme is based - exactly as would happen with a UK pension provider.

However, there is an important exception. This is where you retire in a country which has a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) covering pensions with your QROPS’ country. This allows the pension provider to pay your pension gross - without the deduction of tax. We explain this in great detail and ensure you fully understand any tax responsibilities and liabilities before progressing with any transfer. What happens to my pension should I die? One of the major advantages of a QROPS is the ability to transfer any remaining pension funds to beneficiaries without it being taxed at source. The UK levies a death charge of up to 55% on pensions in drawdown. If your pension fund at the time of your death for every £100,000 then £55,000 is taken by HMRC. QROPS allow any unused funds to be paid directly to your beneficiaries, without any tax deductions. Remaining funds can also be held in trust for the purpose of transferring to beneficiaries on a future date.

+34 952 768 376 | qrops@gwm-ltd.com | www.gwm-ltd.com 32

Does my pension have to be in the same country as I am living? NO. QROPS are for anyone who is no longer planning to retire in the UK. This does not restrict which scheme or jurisdiction is best for you. As previously stated, the tax treatment in certain jurisdictions is pertinent to your country of residence. One of our advisors can help you decide which scheme is best for you. Will payments to me be reported to HMRC? Yes. The QROPS provider is obligated to report all payments (both lump sum and regular income) to HMRC for a period of 10 years from the date of transfer. What pensions can be transferred? Most personal, company, occupational pensions and SIPPS may be transferred before you retire – with the possibility of transfer after retirement. However the UK State Pension cannot be transferred. It is also important to note that with certain Defined Benefit Schemes offering a

guaranteed future income, the annual yield required to guarantee the same level of benefits from a QROPS may be significant and therefore not suitable for transfer. Again we strongly recommend speaking with a qualified expert before taking any action. I have a UK SIPP in drawdown, can I still transfer? All UK registered pension scheme(s) qualify, even if you have commenced benefits. If I have several pensions, can they be consolidated into one single QROPS scheme? Yes. This is one of the main advantages of QROPS. The option to have all of your existing pension provisions under one umbrella being actively managed can be extremely beneficial. It can also make your QROPS more financially viable and cost effective. Many of our clients do this. What investment choices are available? The investment options are more or less endless. We will work with you to create a strategy that fits with your risk profile. We also work with a number of wellestablished Discretionary Fund Managers (DFM) who offer a complete bespoke service. We will then review your portfolio with you on a quarterly basis and provide

commentary on fund switches or changes to the overall strategy. Will I be able to review my plan on-line? Yes. You will have 24/7 internet access from underlying investment vehicle provider. This will allow you to view important information such as ‘current value’ at a touch of a button anytime day or night. I’ve started to take my pension benefits. Can I still transfer to a QROPS? If you have a ‘personal’ pension and have crystalised (received income or in drawdown) then the answer is ‘yes’. Benefits from a Defined Benefit pension however are generally more restricted and as such, cannot be transferred once payments have commenced, although we are aware of a few exceptions. If an annuity has already been purchased then this is a binding contract and as such cannot be transferred. Why is a Letter of Authority (LOA) required? In order for us to present an impartial review/report we must acquire certain information regarding your existing pension. We do this by way of a LOA. The LOA enables your financial adviser to gather key facts from your current pension provider such as transfer value

and summary of existing benefits. Please note that this authority does not in any way constitute a contract, is simply allows the advisor read-only access. They cannot take any action or make amendments to your existing pension plan. Is there a minimum transfer value? As a general rule we think QROPS become cost-effective for transfers of £50,000 and above. However, charging structures vary from company to company, and some providers accept transfers from £30,000 upwards. What about a maximum? There is no maximum that can be transferred, however if the total exceeds the Lifetime Allowance (which is currently £1.25m for the tax year 2012/2013 reducing to £1.25m), there may be a tax liability. I have other assets in my SIPP such as individual stocks, can these also be transferred? Yes. You can transfer cash, stocks and company shares into your QROPS. Cash is normally quicker, but we can transfer other assets by way of an “asset transfer/ in specie” transaction. Do I have to be retired to transfer my pension? No, you don’t. Any eligible pension can be transferred in full at any time. Do all overseas pension schemes qualify? No - a QROPS is what it says. Just being an ‘Overseas Pension Scheme’ is not enough, it also needs to be ‘Qualifying’ and ‘Recognised’ by HMRC. To do this, it needs to be independently authorised as a pension scheme by the appropriate authority in its own jurisdiction and meet all requirements laid down by HMRC.

33

Is it possible to take 100% of my pension as a lump sum? No. Legislative changes introduced in 2012 now mean that at least 70% of the funds transferred into a QROPS must be used to provide an income for life. Is it only available to UK nationals? No - anyone with a UK pension is eligible. For example, an Indian IT technician who has worked in the UK for some time and acquired a UK pension, but is now retiring to Vietnam, would be eligible for a QROPS simply because he has a UK pension. Are QROPS for everyone as long as they are an expat? NO. Although we generally find that for approx. 90% of our enquiries the advantages by far outweigh the

disadvantages. In general, as long as you are non-UK resident and intend to remain so for a total of at least 5 years, the rewards can be substantial. An exception may be an individual with guaranteed annuity rates which were fixed many years ago when interest rates were much higher. In all instances we utilise the services of an international and independent pension technician to provide a critical yield report and illustration to ensure the switch is justifiable. How long does a transfer to a normally QROPS take? On average, between five weeks and two months. As you would imagine there is a lot of paperwork and we are also reliant upon the efficiency of the existing pension provider(s). We work closely with the scheme providers to ensure the process is as quick, efficient and carefree as possible.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

A WALKING TOUR OF

Healthouse By Amber O’Shaughnessy

Before closing its doors for the last time five or so years ago, Las Dunas was one of the most popular luxury hotels on the Coast. Time passed and recently the hotel opened up once again, but with an entirely new focus. Being the first hotel of the global NaturHouse brand, Healthouse offers tailored programmes for weight loss, anti-ageing, anti-stress and detox. I was both intrigued and excited to be invited to take a walking tour of the pioneering Healthouse Las Dunas, which remains as spectacular as ever.

The Hotel For anyone stuck in the rat race of life, driving through the gates of Healthouse is like all your prayers being answered. A member of staff offers me an iced tea cocktail as I walk into the lobby and peruse the ‘Products Menu’ - on arrival at the hotel every guest selects the Naturhouse products they want in their room. “We think it is important that guests can choose the products they need during their stay, whether it is a

40

shampoo for dry hair or an anti-wrinkle face cream,” Marketing Manager Sandra Huerga Kanzler tells me. “We prefer to offer this service rather than relying on the generic and often useless products you find in every hotel room around the world.” This, I soon realise, is Healthouse’s mantra – to create a custom made experience for each guest. We then embark on our tour. As my host talks me through the renovations, I grasp what a colossal task the Healthouse

On the ground floor there is a spacious gym, yoga studio and several shops selling sportswear and staple food supplements, allowing guests to maintain their diet programmes after they have left the hotel. pool and play area. Clearly Healthouse cater for just about every possible type of guest.

The Deep Marine Purifying Facial

The beauty of Healthouse is no more apparent than in the garden and pool area. As well as direct access to the beach, this outdoor expanse boasts a specifically designed yoga space that has uninterrupted views of the ocean and a water feature that runs from the foyer right down to the sea. We cross a large outdoor terrace where guests can enjoy their breakfast al fresco and proceed to the restaurant. Again in an innovative twist, the kitchen and dining area is completely open so guests can view dishes being prepared by the chef and learn how to recreate them at home. The restaurant offers nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner menus that are all in keeping with specific dietary plans. The juice, water and tea menu available is quite frankly dizzying, making each guests’ dining experience enjoyable as well as healthy.

The Spa

After much deliberation over the extensive Spa Menu, I chose this treatment as I suffer from redness and blotchiness on my skin. I am treated to 50 minutes of unadulterated relaxation as my therapist cleanses, exfoliates and applies a purifying facial mask to my skin - all with products made from natural ingredients of course. The scalp massage was just the cherry on the top! Needless to say, my skin is positively glowing as I leave.

Alongside the 55 rooms and suites available in the main part of the hotel, there are also 34 self-catering apartments, which are ideal for families. Mum can indulge in an anti-ageing programme while the children can still have a normal holiday, enjoying the

Whichever programme you sign up for, the medical team conducts an initial consultation (including blood, urine and state of the art DEXA tests to evaluate body fat composition) to assess which treatments are most applicable. I am shown the aquatic massage room, the sauna, steam room, tepidarium, vitality pool and hot and cold plunge pools. Most impressive of all however are the ice cave, which firms the skin and is also perfect for migraine sufferers, the salt room, which is lined by walls of Himalayan salt to detox the skin and help with insomnia and the flotarium. Offering a weightless, gravity-free sensation, one hour in this large tub apparently will make you feel like you have slept for five hours.

As the Healthouse team bids me farewell, I am left with a feeling of total calm. The staff simply cannot do enough to ensure each guest achieves exactly what they want from their stay. Whether you are the heavier lady who is tired of starving yourself to try and lose weight or the businessman who is burnt out from work, yet struggles to sleep at night, Healthouse can change your lifestyle or, at the very least, allow you to escape from it all for a short time. For those of you looking for a better quality lifestyle, whatever the reason, this retreat is calling your name.

THE ART

of HIGHLIGHT and

Beauty Editor Liza gives readers a monthly update on all things gorgeous, keeping you up to date with the latest trends and best beauty bits for your makeup bag!

E

ver since Miss Kim Kardashian graced our screen and reintroduced the art of contouring, I have found that it has become one of the most popular and demanded looks when working with private clients, brides and high fashion editorial and I am constantly asked how to achieve a contoured effect at home. Well, ladies, here are a few home tips for you. Contouring is a technique previously reserved for runway models and high fashion photo shoots, but is now becoming part of our daily make up routine. So what is it exactly? In a nutshell, contouring is giving shape to an area of the face, enhancing the facial structure through make-up. It is not supposed to be noticeable, more subtle definition - and I do mean subtle! In other words, It’s all about the artistry and illusion. This is not the time to find one of your darker shades of blusher or bronzer and draw a line under your cheek bone. Highlighting is the process by which you accentuate the highest points of your face, such as the top of your cheek bones, just under your eyebrows or the bridge of your nose. The product should be one to two shades lighter than your complexion. You can use both shimmery and matte products for highlighting. Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to trying out the contoured look at home: Contours should be matte, while highlighting is meant to have shimmer. Don’t get the two confused and, remember, texture is key!

42

A lot of people contour with their bronzer, but I’m against that unless you have tanned skin. You need to find something that creates the illusion of an actual shadow, so choose a shade one to two tones darker than your skin; these will typically will be shades of beige and brown. If you’re using powder to contour, you’ll achieve a more matte finish. If you use creams the result will be more dewy. If you are a beginner, start with creamy products, since these will be much easier to build up and blend until you get your desired look.

Get an angled cream brush to hit under the cheek and jaw bones. Brushes are key to any good application of make-up! You should buy two, one for contouring and one for highlighting. Just about every make-up artist in the world swears by MAC #217. This will help with precision under the jawline and around the cheekbone for a flawless, airbrushed finish. There is one rule to keep in mind when it comes to highlighting and contouring hard lines are not elegant or chic. Use a regular foundation brush or a damp egg

sponge and tap it into the contour to make sure there’s no hard obvious lines. You absolutely need to BLEND BLEND BLEND! Once you have finished contouring your face, don’t forget to add some colour to the apple of the cheek and a bit of sheen to the cheekbones to enhance the complexion still further. A peachypink tone for a natural looking flush always works best and adapts to most skin tones, then add luminizer just at the top of the cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose and a hint on the chin for super-fresh skin. My all time favourite is Benefit High Beam - its creamy liquid texture is easy to apply and has long lasting results.

This Month’s Favourites By Liza Mayne

der The Beauty Blen

The beauty blender is a revolutionary sponge make-up applicator that has no sharp edges, unlike a traditional triangle sponge. When used properly, I find it blends your foundation flawlessly and seamlessly into your skin more effectively than a foundation brush or your fingers. I’ve had my makeup airbrushed by make-up artists in the past for various events and the beauty blender is the closest thing to achieving that same professional finish. So, as you can tell, I love it!

KIKO - Rock Attraction

The collection comes in a range of six shades - look out for 01 Pearly Rock if you want to achieve a highlighting effect. It has a silky smooth and comfortable texture and can be applied extremely easily, leaving your skin feeling super soft. This product can be built up until you feel you have reached the desired look and has a high concentration of pigments and pearls that help sculpt facial features and give an instant glow.

atural Bobbie Brown - N If you’re looking to contour with ease, there is no better shade than Bobbie Brown Natural. The amazing contour colour has a natural red base so it won’t give you that orangey look, which you should especially avoid during the winter months. It can also be used in the summer with a shimmery bronzer for a warm glow. This product offers the most beautifully sculpted effect and instantly gives skin the look of a natural tan. Remember, a little goes along way so you only need a tiny amount - build it up slowly.

Kryolan – Pan S tick If you want to achieve a stronger, longer lasting contour line, it’s best to use a cream based product. My favourite is the Kryolan - pan stick. Although thicker and heavier, this product provides full coverage to the skin and when blended gives a far more natural and dewy effect. Be careful however; if it is not applied properly you run the risk of creating a dirty, muddy, patchy look.

44

Make Up Forever Sculpting Kit The Sculpting Kit is a set of two compact powders suited to reshape and alter the size of the face using a light and shadow contrast. It is the perfect choice for beginners trying to achieve the art of facial contouring. If applied on the right strategic areas of the face and blended accordingly, it really helps to create a more sculpted face. It’s long-lasting and blends well.

eam Benefit – High B High Beam is a GREAT highlighter - it’s like applying liquefied pearls to your skin and really complements and adds a touch of glow to any look. It is easier to blend and looks more natural when applied over or mixed with liquid foundation. The satin pink colour doesn’t show up, instead a pretty, white, slightly opalescent shimmer/sheen is left on the skin. To achieve best results apply to cheekbones, eyebrow arches and cupid’s bow.

The Glorious

1970’s

With the release of the Agent Provocateur Autumn Winter Campaign, we take a look at the historical context behind the collection. While fashion forward, the new range also pays tribute to the glamour of the seventies.

here is a place of glorious excess, where the beautiful people bathe in champagne and lie on exotic silken cushions; where tinkling laughter rings out underneath the disco ball, and time is forgotten until the midday sun peeks through the blinds. For Autumn/ Winter 2014, Agent Provocateur returns to the flagrant hedonism and brilliant abandon of its formative years. A place of glorious excess where secrets go untold, memories are crystallized and boundaries are forgotten. You had to be seen at Le Salon, Maxim’s, The Palace, The 7 and then Chez Regine, sang Amanda Lear in 1979.

oeuvre. Larson is known for his direction of music videos for the likes of Kylie Minogue, and this supercharged energy lights up this Autumn/Winter campaign in these images, he tracks the journey of two first time visitors to the club and witnesses the story unfold through their eyes. Christian Larson: “I’ve always been a huge fan of Agent Provocateur... who isn’t? When they asked me to get involved with this great concept I jumped at the chance, especially as it was an opportunity to combine stills and film and work with such a great team of people. Storytelling that can be

developed and built up over the course of the year is really exciting.” Creative Director of Agent Provocateur Sarah Shotton says that, “The Autumn/ Winter campaign images mirror the luxurious excess of the glorious 1970s that I had envisaged when designing the collection. I wanted to make sure that everything from the decadent backdrop of the set to the breath taking beauty of Missy Rayder emulated the mystery behind our glamorous concept. Christian Larson was the perfect photographer choice for us as his dark and moody images always have just the right amount of sex appeal with an almost cryptic edge.”

Creative Director Sarah Shotton wanted to capture a spirit of languid vice and carefree luxury for this Autumn/Winter campaign. Missy Rayder is the dazzling star of the photo campaign, and she smoulders as the Salon’s main star. The Canadian brunette assumes her role masterfully, slinking around the backstage setting in opulent silks, toying with a glass of champagne as she considers her next move. For the images, Christian Larson settles comfortably into the director’s chair, bringing his signature Scandi-slick sex appeal to the Agent Provocateur

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

Russian tuners are almost unknown outside the Motherland, but one company has gone global. 92

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the TOP CAR STINGER

93

TORQUE TALK

J

ust as in other countries all over the world, car tuning and customisation in Russia encompasses enthusiasts from two extremes; those who crave power and speed, and those who just like to cruise. The really hard-core speed junkies take part in the popular Moscow Unlimited 500+ event, a side-by-side standing mile drag race for standard and modified supercars held on the very long runway at the Minsk-1 Airport runway. There are two categories: Fastest car over one kilometre, and fastest car over one mile. While this event is not about trading pink slips, honour is most definitely at stake.

94

The counterpoint is aftermarket customisation with the conventional blend of body styling, wheels, suspension and special interiors. While most of the well-known German tuners are represented in Russia through local partners, there is also a small but vibrant homegrown customising industry that caters to the specific tastes of Russian clients. Depending on social class and higher education, the taste of a Russian client can be either similar to or radically different from that of European as well as Arab and Far Eastern customers. Thus it is important that a local tuner or customisation specialist be able to

meet their client’s needs with a total understanding of what is expected in terms of style, materials and colour. For instance, Russia is the only market where crocodile leather is a popular material for car interiors. I have personally seen several Russian owned Bentleys and Mercedes in Marbella and Monaco with dashboard top rolls and other interior trim made from real or imitation crocodile skin. However, mimicking German tuners with homegrown body styling and interiors, but with a local twist, is far from where Russian car customisation begins and ends. In the former Soviet Union, new

TORQUE TALK cars and spare parts were relatively scarce, although not to anything like the extent they are in Cuba. During the communist times, the wealthy and well connected could always get imported cars and service support, but the average person had to put their name down for a Lada and wait several years. Needless to say, spares for the local machinery were also hard to come by, and you were advised to remove the windscreen wiper blades when you parked on the street! It was no wonder then that the best motor engineers and mechanics from the former Soviet Union countries exhibit world-class ingenuity and creativity, as they often had to make from scratch what was not readily available.

That ingenuity was allowed to shine on the world stage after the Berlin Wall fell, with a very special one-off car from a Moscow-based company called a:level that briefly become the doyen of the international press. A bespoke coachbuilder whose fanatical pursuit of exclusivity for their wealthy clients meant that they only ever made one of everything, a:level created their iconic Volga V12 Coupe from a stretched, widened and modified GAS 21 Volga saloon shell, underpinned by the mechanicals and interior from a BMW 850CSi.

Sadly, a:level no longer exists, as there was apparently a problem with their overseas investor after the debut of the convertible version of this car in 2006. But the vision and talent that made these and other unique cars possible showed the world that the Russians play second fiddle to no one in this business. Also Moscow-based, Top Car is a bit more conventional in their approach to tuning, using current Porsche models as the canvas on which they place their distinctive stamp.

95

TORQUE TALK Rather than being a coachbuilder, for whom business depends on finding highnet-worth individuals as patrons, Top Car is organised along the lines of German Porsche tuners like Gemballa and TechArt, but with a unique Russian twist. The man behind Top car is Oleg Egorov, whose very successful advertising company in Moscow is his core business. A passionate car enthusiast, Oleg originally set up a company in 2002 to represent Gemballa in the Russian Federation. “As much as I loved Uwe Gemballa’s designs, I was frustrated by erratic supplies and other issues,” he explained. “It was at that point that I decided the only way to make the business work properly was to establish my own brand and control the supply chain from A to Z,” he said. Top Car was founded in August 2004 to do precisely this, and under Oleg’s watchful eye, has gone from strength to strength. “We had a 10th Anniversary party at this year’s Moscow Motor Show, where our Macan and 991 Turbo conversions debuted,” he said proudly. The Top Car concept took a lot of planning and organisation before it became a reality, but with the Gemballa experience, and his advertising and media awareness behind him, Oleg had

96

a pretty good idea of all the potential pitfalls, as well as what was required to create a slick operation.

fraction of a millimetre. These readings form the basis of our prototype parts and the subsequent moulds,” he explained.

“I brought together a team of designers and engineers who now do everything from start to finish,” said Oleg. “Today, a decade down the line, we have almost 70 staff, 40 of whom are specialists in designing and crafting the special interiors that our clients are increasingly demanding.”

As a former concours judge, I tend to pick up flaws in fit and finish very easily. However, the aero kit on the yellow Top Car 991 Carrera S stood up to close examination when I first examined it outside Top Car’s recently opened HQ in Marbella, Spain.

At this level, only high quality carbonfibre will do for the aerodynamic styling components, he explained. “We make these in Russia so that we can keep a close eye on quality. However, the raw materials come from Western European sources like Germany and Luxembourg, who produce the best automotive grade carbon-fibre.” Of course using the best materials is of little consequence if the fit and finish of the parts is not also world class. “That is why we spare no expense to ensure that our tolerances are as exact as possible,” Oleg continued. “We use a state-of-the-art laser dimensioning machine on an actual car to get its measurements down to a

To my mind, this is a great achievement as it is a very difficult three-dimensional puzzle to create wheel arch extensions that compliment, both visually and physically, the complex compound curves of the 991’s sensuous lines. The finished article has a sense of flair that makes the Carrera look more purposeful, like a tame version of the RSR racecar for the road. Most importantly, it captures the Porsche 911 essence. Central to this tougher look, are the big wheel arch flares whose lines and contours suit the 991 perfectly. At first glance, they are reminiscent of the 993 GT2 arches, but sans the distinctive quick release attachment bolts. The deeper front spoiler and new rear valance continue this philosophy, with character

TORQUE TALK

and detailing that harmoniously blends with the rest of the conversion. These visual cues alone give the styling strong Porsche connotations, underlining how Top Car’s stylists understand the original design philosophy and go with the flow rather than trying to impose a conflicting design language on the base car. Judging by their equally successful takes on other Porsche models like the Macan and 991 Turbo, this critical part of good aftermarket styling is a consistent Top Car trademark. Used properly to show its presence as a structural material, naked carbonfibre can be used to emphasis a design theme. Unfortunately, it tends to be used by many tuners as a decorative material, which rather defeats this material’s intrinsic physical properties of high strength and low weight.

front splitter, the lower part of the side skirts, rear diffuser, and the rear wing. You can of course, choose to have all these parts colour coded too, but I personally think the stark contrast works very well. The only purely decorative parts of the kit are the vertical insert on the trailing edge of each front wheel arch, and the triangular pieces under the daytime running lights that give the illusion of larger air intakes. I commented on the stock interior in the yellow show car car, one of the first to be built and hurriedly shipped to Marbella

All the carbon-fibre parts of the Stinger aero kit, which include the front bumper/spoiler, bonnet, wheel arches, side-skirts and rear bumper are normally colourcoded to the bodywork. The parts left in lacquered carbon-fibre are the

On the other hand, considering the numerous large speed bumps that litter this part of Spain, looks apart, this is probably no bad thing for the driver’s sanity. But once again that choice will be left to the client. Oleg also told me that Top Car is in the process of making their own forged alloys, which will be far more bespoke than these off-the-shelf offerings. They are the Russian dealer for the world famous Akrapovic titanium exhausts, and use Brembo brakes if a client should want upgraded anchors. As Oleg lives in Miami, where Top Car’s US Headquarters is situated, he sought an engine conversion specialist who could do a good job with no comebacks.

Oleg had come over to Marbella from Miami during my visit, so I had the chance to interview him face-to-face. He grabbed a Stinger front wheel arch off the showroom wall and handed it to me to demonstrate how little it weighs, as well as to show me the fine surface quality of this unpainted panel. As applied to the whole car, the carbonfibre Stinger body kit weighs no more than around 15kg, but the extended front spoiler lip and TechArt rear wing are able to significantly reduce lift over the front and rear axles at speed.

because it lacks the H&R fully adjustable suspension kit that normally goes with this conversion.

The kind of customer who buys a Top Car conversion wants more power with no downsides, so exotic tuning with displacement increases for naturallyaspirated cars, and huge power outputs that tax reliability and engine life of the turbocharged models are a definite no go area for Oleg.

for the opening of the new showroom. “Wealthy Russians love the individual interiors we create that can cost up to 30,000 euros depending on materials,” Oleg explained. “It would have been a waste to find that a prospective buyer did not like the one in our test car, so we decided to leave this as a blank canvas until the car is sold.”

After a negative experience with a German tuner, Top Car has settled into a comfortable relationship with Champion Motorsport in Pompano Beach, Florida. Champion’s background with the Audi and Porsche factory ALMS race teams has given them legendary status in the aftermarket tuning world, and their drive for perfection in quality and reliability are exactly what Oleg was looking for in his search for a technical partner.

delivers about 30hp and 38Nm (28 ft lb) of peak torque, with low-end torque gains of as much as 54Nm (40 ft lb). Throttle response and soundtrack and also improved. While this is a really good result for a naturally-aspirated motor, the really big power gains remain the province of the Turbo and Turbo S conversions. The Akrapovic titanium systems that Top Car sells in Russia work equally well in lowering back-pressure, and save additional weight from that critical area in the tail. However, the test car just had Top Car’s fluted end pipes that fit to the stock exhaust silencer.

Moscow, Miami, Monaco and now Marbella. Purely by coincidence, Top Car’s dealerships are all placed in cities or towns beginning with M that happen to have a high concentration of wealth. Certainly, exotic spots like Miami, Monaco and Marbella are where the typical Top Car customer usually has a second or third home. A lover of fine wrist watches as well, Oleg commissioned a limited, numbered edition of 25 special Top Car watches from Hubot earlier this year. As watch manufacturers of this calibre do not collaborate with just anyone, this is a good indication of Top Car’s standing.

Ten years is an eternity in the motor industry, but Top Car has come a long way in that time. Russia no longer exports the cars of its miserable state run auto industry, but in the aftermarket tuning and customisation business, Top Car can hold its head up high with standards of design and quality that match the best of its world famous German and American rivals. VIVA Marbella !

KEEP IT REAL

By Angelo Collins

OCATION! LOCATION! OCATION! These three are

the most important factors when buying property. We have all been told this a million times, so why then is there surprise and suspicion where the apparent stabilising of the property market in Marbella is concerned? The theory states that the Spanish property market is in recession, therefore the buyer is king and, by default, can offer what he or she likes and the vendor should gratefully accept. Well that’s simply not the case in Marbella. A good property in a good location will fetch very close to the vendor’s asking price and, indeed, all the vendors that were desperate to sell have already done so. Now it is very important to add this is not a general reflection of Spain’s property market, but just Marbella and not even everywhere in the Marbella area, but the best urbanisations and locations have shown that they hold their value. This is exactly what we would expect in key postcodes throughout the UK, London in particular, so why not here? Knightsbridge and South Kensington, for example, are always going to buck national trends because people desperately want to live there and therefore demand is outstripping supply -

the property market’s favourite recipe for inflation. Now couple this situation with the best climate in the Mediterranean and it’s not hard to see why real estate in this part of the world regularly defies downward market tendencies. Marbella has also had a no-nonsense, sensible development policy for many years, thereby imposing relatively low building volume compared with the concrete jungles in most of the other coasts of Spain. Combine this with excellent municipal services and security, wonderful infrastructure, challenging golf courses and other sporting facilities, five-star marinas and great restaurants and it’s easy to see why Marbella and its fabulous micro-climate enjoys 12 month tourist season. This is precisely why it attracts discerning visitors from all over Europe and worldwide. Not only has the local property market improved in sales volume from 2012 to 2013 by more than 22 per cent, but this figure was repeated in 2013 and the sales volume increased even more in annual terms during the first half of 2014 (according to figures published by the Spanish Ministry of Public Works), making Marbella the leading city in Spain in sales volume growth. In doing so it outstripped major international resort areas, including Aspen, Pebble Beach and the

Turks & Caicos Islands. The reason for this is clearly because, even though the economy in Spain is in crisis, the demand for property purchase in Marbella is more than 85 per cent from foreign purchasers wanting to live here and, therefore, not as dependent on the national economy. Even Hollywood’s finest are reportedly returning, with reports of George Clooney having bought a house in Marbella’s upmarket Sierra Blanca. Piers Morgan’s famous television exposé about Marbella, although a little stereotypical, on the whole painted a glamorous picture of the famous seaside town. So if you are searching for a holiday home or considering investing in the area, remember a house or property in the right location that meets your particular requirements is probably right for you. Always use an established and trusted agent familiar with your particular urbanisation or area of choice and check around - what sold close by and for how much? Good luck and we hope to see you on the paseo, in Orange Square or in one of Marbella’s many wonderful restaurants. Viva the Marbella lifestyle!

e wanted to introduce a fresh new approach in real estate and development to the Costa del Sol and used our previous experience in Southern Spain, the US and Central London markets to achieve this. Bespoke Villas have been around for years but improvement in technology and an innovative way of thinking has made the whole experience of building your dream home that much more enjoyable. “This was key to the development of the service that we wanted to offer our clients” explains Luke Davis, Director of Propana Group. The Propana team is on the ball and is excited to demonstrate this fresh and unprecedented consulting experience that enables clients to streamline their tailored property service every single step of the way. The offices demonstrate the luxury and design elements that they want to implement into the properties that they are building. It is the result of a close collaboration between a team that they know and trust that has enabled Propana to provide the right quality and flair that their clients expect. Every client is appointed a bespoke design consultant who is a direct point of contact and is responsible for translating the client’s ideas into reality. Customers can sit in the Propana office and look at the floor plans, etched onto backlit perspex panels, therefore changes and adjustments can be made there and then.

110

“People use their homes in very different ways and what may be a priority for one family may not even be of any interest to another home owner” comments Hayley, Creative Designer at FOC Design, who work closely with Propana’s clients in order to establish the right interior distribution and design elements for the end user. “With the luxury service provided at Propana, the client can opt for a gym or a playroom, a bodega, his and hers offices or all of the above, depending on how THEY wish to use their space. It is not pre-packaged and we are here as a close-knit team to ensure that every request is fulfilled to the best of our abilities”. Once the clients are happy with the layouts and materials chosen, the house can be viewed through 3D glasses in

Propana’s 3D cinema. Clients can really start to get a feel for their home even before a brick has been laid. This system not only allows the clients to enjoy the design and build experience but can also highlight potential problems and allow them to visualize certain elements of the design which were hard for them to imagine. This approach also allows for a more transparent and adjustable format to the cost of building a dream home – clients can now see very clearly where the costs lie and can modify budgets by their choice of materials and finishes. Building what was once an unobtainable dream, is now comparable to buying a resale property, but with the huge advantage that you can achieve exactly what you want.

The sizes of the properties will range from 410 to 1,200 square metres, with plot size a minimum of 2,600 square metres and will sit high above the bright lights of Marbella and Puerto Banús. Nestled in the heart of an abundant cork and pine forest, surrounded by wildlife and nature with stunning views down over sweeping golf fairways, the Coast and the glistening Mediterranean, the private communities of El Madroñal and La Zagaletta are home to some of the most exceptional luxury properties in Spain. From this idyllic location, perched 400 metres above sea level in a haven of complete serenity and calm, it’s hard to imagine you are only a short distance from the hustle and bustle of one of the most fashionable destinations in Europe, such is the secluded beauty of this elite neighbourhood. Situated within a 24-hour guarded gated complex and set among acres of unspoiled land that enjoy complete privacy, El Madroñal is idyllic, yet only a short drive from the main coastal highway. f you are sick of that leaky tap, chipped sink and crooked shelving now might be the perfect time to revamp your bathroom. All too often we put up with such imperfections for years, always thinking we will get round to addressing it some day, but never quite finding the time! Whether you want to go all out and replace virtually everything or simply want to invest in a few new bits and pieces, here are some interesting and innovative ideas that may appeal. Whether you’re looking for a serene retreat, a glitzy primping space or a sleek design, these unique bathroom ideas from FOC Design are sure to inspire.

all or nothing Not a case of There’s always a danger when designing a new bathroom that combining stunning bathroom walls and designer products can create a monster. While designer products are fantastic and beautiful walls are eye catching, as the old saying goes, too many cooks spoil the broth. No one wants to have to go into a new bathroom wearing sunglasses to protect themselves from over the top bling. If you’re designing your own bathroom, it’s worth remembering that each angle only needs one stand-out item. Whether you´re dying for that accent wall backdrop or have your eye on the walk in rain shower, below FOC has highlighted some of our favourite ideas and pieces that can transform your basic bathroom into a pampering haven.

lutter Control that C It is all too common for us to be fighting a losing battle to keep those bathrooms tidy; cosmetic clutter taints the appearance of what could be your beautiful bathroom. The simple way to make life easier and to help ensure that this part of your abode is the height of style and elegance, is to invest in new bathroom storage. There are so many products to choose from and, with the right guidance, it should be easy to find something to match both your aesthetic and practical requirements. If you’ve been hunting the web in search of bathroom furniture, then you could be forgiven for thinking all bathroom furniture looks the same. In fact, most of the cheap pieces of bathroom furniture resemble an ugly white box and a lot of the designer pieces available to the public look like a carbon copy of the previous. Picking bathroom furniture can be a gruelling process, an influx of cheaply copied bathroom furniture results in designs that are already five years out of date. If the mass market is out of date, to get truly fashionable furniture you’ll have to stay clear of the mainstream. This is where talking to a design team such as FOC can really help. We source the best and latest furnishings from all over the world and are constantly updating

our suppliers to make sure we can help you create a bespoke, idyllic and relaxing environment. If you’re fed up of the same old rectangular vanity unit and want something a bit different then use your full wall as a fully bespoke built in storage unit. A bespoke design could be the solution to all of your storage and aesthetic needs. Rather than utilising a two meter wall by filling it with a 180cm vanity unit, a bespoke design built into your wall makes use of all the space, surrounding that one basic vanity unit with extra storage and make it a real feature of the room! The ideal solution to clear your clutter plus concealing all those ugly pipes! Equally you might not wish to be quite so adventurous. There is nothing wrong with the very popular rectangular unit as long as the finish and quality are right. A high gloss, soft-close floating vanity unit never goes amiss with us here at FOC Design and can, of course, be bespoke itself. For extra storage try adding a dual vanity unit and recessed cabinets and complete the look with a gorgeous, oversized mirror. Better yet, if done well even a recessed mirror cabinet can free up the tightest of spaces and make your bathroom look bigger too.

basins s baths and er ow sh ue iq un Sinking into a lovely warm bath can be incredibly comforting, particularly as we approach the time in the calendar when, even on the Coast, we are starting to feel the chill. With this in mind, why not go all out and invest in the ultimate in bathing apparatus by buying a free-standing bathtub? There is a certain air of luxury that comes with a stand-alone tub, a real style statement. While adding products like this to your home costs a little money,

114

it will also serve to raise the value of your property. If you’re looking for some bathroom inspiration then this unique and natural bath by Swiss bath company; Bagno Sasso really does get the creative juices flowing. Its organic form, complemented by a floor comprising small pebbles and a fantastic slate tile backdrop, allows you to begin to get the feeling that this unique bathroom idea is pretty idyllic if you are inspired by all that is Zen. If you’re thinking about going ultra modern, we here at FOC have absolutely fallen in love with this stunning black Vessel freestanding bath by Splinter Works and its matching basin. Not looking for this stunning minimal look for your bathroom? Well vintage is back, so if you wanted to go all-out and buy a black and white claw-foot tub as your statement piece, we wouldn’t blame you and, of course, the better the view from your bath, be it a view of the ocean or a view of your chrome framed recessed TV, the better the bath experience!

If it is your home’s reception toilet that is need of a facelift then this futuristic basin design by FOC might be perfect for you. The shaped basin flows with an organic feel towards the floor, creating a natural stream-like effect with any water running into the smallest of gaps in the floor. Rather than overpowering the basin with bold colours, we kept the rest of the room subtle, instead choosing to complement the basin with a harmony of neutral tone and visible wood grain painted in the softest bronze metallics. This statement basin certainly is the centrepiece of the bathroom, as intended.

Wet rooms have become more and more popular over the past few years. When you think of a wet room, your mind generally drifts to daydreams of beautiful spa resorts in tropical locations, with stunning tiling and wooden features. Getting rid of a shower cubicle or bath and creating a more open-plan area can be a clever way to turn a relatively small bathroom into one that has a feeling of space. They are a fantastic way to

help create a stylish, contemporary and practical bathroom. One of the major advantages of a wet room area is the flexibility to change the size, depending on your room. The exclusion of a shower tray allows you to customize your own shower area with the use of fixed glass panels, or even none at all. A wet room gives your bathroom a minimalist, open feel while also having a very modern, stylish appearance. This Magic Shower, walk-in wet room system is a simple yet beautiful example, with its clean geometric lines and its totally open space. Rather than over complicating the setting for this shower, the design team behind this masterpiece instead used oversized plain floor tiles that they have cleverly side-lit to allow the shower itself to have maximum effect on the user. What really brings this room to life, other than the shower, is this fab lighting! In a world where floor to ceiling tiles are becoming a bit old fashioned, this glorious down light is a great example of how a simple change can make a world of difference. Statement lighting doesn’t need to cost a fortune, an LED light strip and, as this bathroom design shows, it can make a pretty simple bathroom stand out a mile; guess that view doesn’t hurt either!

lls Wonderous wa Ten years ago bathroom tiles were a pretty simple affair, plain or with wavy lines, your choices were limited. Today there’s an abundance of options available, ranging from plain white to wood. Yes, we did say wood. In fact the wood effect in modern tiles is so realistic they’re now being produced in plank form and you can’t spot the difference. If you angle more towards a rustic, shabby-chic style, why not try some imitation wooden tiles? Woodlook surroundings add a homely, warm feel to a bathroom, but you can keep it chic with white porcelain basins and tubs. With the addition of underfloor heating to soften that cold tile feel, and with dark walnut being very popular right now, why wouldn’t

you experiment with these fantastic tiles? Wood effect tiles aren’t just available in walnut, there’s a huge range of effects available and it doesn’t stop there. You can now get stone and brick look tiles too. We love how this Porcelanosa design uses a slightly different combination of the same wood tiles to create a natural feel to what could have been a very lifeless bathroom wall. Contrasting the wood grain against neutral colours has allowed the tiles to become a feature of the bathroom, rather than just another tile which gives this bathroom that extra punch. Like we keep saying, you only need a couple of statement features

to achieve your stylish bathroom. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is by making your walls pop using tiles, glass panels or even a sturdy vinyl wallpaper. Mosaic tiling is a classic concept that has held its own in the interior world for years. Now it is being used far more subtly and in a much more contemporary way. Check out this fabulous mosaic tile design by manufacturer Dune - beautiful, assertive yet still subtle, just goes to show you don’t need much to go a long way.

Turn up the heat If you have ugly bathroom pipe work, worry no more because beautiful stylish electric towel warmers have arrived. Have you ever noticed that when someone wants a bathroom they go into great detail about the vanity unit or bath they want, but when it comes to a designer towel warmer to match, they glaze over with boredom? The fact is, in most bathroom designs

120

the radiator is often an afterthought, purchased on the cheap in order to bring a budget back down. Well not at FOC. It’s time we started thinking differently. For a while now there have been some great towel warmer designs coming on to the market that don’t just have to be an added extra. Designer towel warmers like this collection of masterpieces from

Bagno Sasso can add a bit of style to your bathroom, over shadowing a bland vanity unit. So if the only thing stopping you from achieving a designer bathroom is that issue with over spending, well luckily, these new breeds of designer towel warmers aren’t that expensive either.

ere is a confession: we love Magna Café! If ever there is a chance to whizz off there for an extended lunch break on a Friday or after work we never miss an opportunity. In fact, if you ever find yourself near the Society office on a Magna Café day then please be careful or you might be mown down in the stampede!

MAGNA CAFÉ A World of Choice Reviewed by India Baltran / Photos by Julila Roder

Although the food is always reliably magnificent we also enjoy the relaxed ambience and the amazing views from the terrace. Due to its plentiful outside seating and warm and welcoming interior, Magna Café is a favourite for many Marbella residents throughout the year and it is certainly a place where you can be sure of bumping into the Society team, from January to December. On our most recent visit we decided that we would put the Magna team to the test by straying from our tried-andtested favourites and sampling some different dishes.

There is certainly a world of choice, including some fabulous fish and seafood recipes, plenty for the most avid carnivore to sink his teeth into and some terrific vegetarian options too. We ordered our drinks and spent some time browsing the menu. Everyone agreed that the Goat Cheese Gratin with Honey, Pine Nuts and Caramelised Apple accompanied by Rocket Salad and a Balsamic Reduction sounded delicious. So did the Magna Toast with Shrimps and Marinated Salmon served with a Mustard and Lime Mayonnaise Sauce. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the problem with choosing to

dine at Magna Café; leave some time to read the menu carefully because if you skim over it you are bound to miss a few real treats. In the end we were ready to order our starters: the final choices were the Tuna Tartare with Avocado accompanied with Mezclum and served with Marinated Ginger and Wasabi and Soy Cream, Mussels in a White Wine, Onion, Shallot and Parsley Cream and the Chef’s Starters Platter. This final selection is an excellent way of gaining an understanding of what Magna Café is about and, especially if you are a fairly adventurous diner, this is a splendid way to sample the myriad ways that the chef demonstrates his expertise, with a full range of skills and mouthwatering flavours the result. Our platter included taster portions of Marinated Salmon stuffed with Goats’ Cheese and Dill Sauce, Pineapple with Skagen Prawns, Goose and Duck Foie Mi-Cuit, served with Candied Lemon Gelée, Honey Bread and Port Reduction, Rollmop Herrings and Tomato and Mozzarella.

We made embarrassingly short work of these wonderful dishes (everyone knows about speed dating, but have you every heard of speed eating?) and agreed that they were the ideal introduction to Magna’s philosophy of providing customers with inventive and tasty recipes, most of which have a distinctly international flavour.

typically revolutionary ideas of how best to answer the ‘sweet ‘n sour’ question, so that selection was perhaps the easiest of all. The ‘Africana’ veal Strips in a Curry Sauce served with Caramelised Banana, Peanuts, Mandarins, Mango Chutney, Pineapple, Pepper and Coconut Rice was, to say the least, a memorable new way of enjoying an old favourite.

Our main courses were equally inspired, the first two choices making use of the amazing fish and seafood that we enjoy on the Costa del Sol. We were especially impressed by the Roast Turbot served with Herb Potato Confit, Olives and Cherry Tomatoes, a dish cleverly designed to ensure that the main ingredient was the star of the show. We also enjoyed the fabulous Seafood Cannelloni with a Crayfish, Fino Sherry and Saffron Sauce, a satisfying and successful alternative to this much loved Italian classic. The dedicated carnivore in our party was looking forward to some

Having eaten so much there was little room left (a very stupid move, since Magna Café serves some gorgeous desserts) but we decided to be brave and ordered the Chocolate Fondant and the Meringue with Raspberries and Fresh Cream, both of which were excellent. Afterwards, over a café con leche, we tried to pin down what makes Magna Café such a roaring success and concluded that its attraction lies primarily in its impeccable customer service. It is one thing for a restaurant to develop a

menu that promises the best of world cuisine, but quite another for the staff still to be delivering those delicious dishes with flair and paying minute attention to the requirements of each and every guest week after week, day after day, service after service. Magna Café has what it takes and is clearly in the business for the long run and it is primarily for this reason - amongst many others - that we will remain devoted fans.

renache appears to have originated in Spain, most likely in the northern province of Aragon, and ampelographers (grapevine specialists) believe that it was the basis of Aragon’s excellent vin rouge du pays. From Aragon, it spread throughout the vineyards of Spain and the Mediterranean. Back in the 80s, there was a period of dormancy in which vast garnacha vineyards were

abandoned, but recently the precious grape has been given power and prestige to reconquer “the Crown of Opulence”. Grenache - garnacha is undoubtedly the second best Spanish red grape. Responsible for some of the most delicious and expensive wines of Spain from newly praised regions like Campo de Borja, Madrid and Mentrida

to established Priorat & Monsant wine country, Grenache is just as important in the Spanish wine world as Tempranillo. The noble grape’s profile includes weak colour, soft tannins, and high alcohol content. Red wines made completely from old grenache varieties commonly smelled of sweet mulberries, black cherries, violet petals, liquid chocolate and plum liqueur, with a peculiar touch of cinnamon.

D-WINE THE BOSS OF THE BUNCH FOR BUSINESS LUNCHES

L

ooking Looking for a discreet destination to discuss a deal? Seeking somewhere sophisticated to schmooze a new client? Or perhaps you’re simply hungry halfway through the working day and hunting out a haunt to enjoy a tasty dish? Whatever the motive, D-wine can fulfil your needs. Launching a brand new lunch menu this month, D-wine - until now - has been known as a high-end restaurant and wine shop, boasting exquisite produce and flawless service. That will change slightly this month for the new lunch menu will offer a large choice of dishes from just €8. Each lunch dish can also be professionally paired with a glass of white, rosé or red wine for an additional €3-4.

Yes, the price is changing but all your favourite things about D-wine will, of course, remain the same. For example, the lunchtime dishes will still be made with locally sourced ingredients, fish will still be brought in fresh from the famed fish markets of Cadiz and Marbella and the meat chosen by the D-wine grill chef in MercaMadrid. Wine recommendations will still be offered with each dish and that flawless service which has become synonymous with D-wine will most definitely remain on point.

For a quick hour or 45-minute lunch break throughout the working day, look no further than the conveniently located D-wine. Much like the 4000 wines housed at D-wine, the restaurant has also struck the perfect balance that of unpretentious lunchtime cuisine combined with highly polished service. CAFÉ CULTURE

M

y favourite part of the day in Marbella is the morning. It’s before the heat of the sun has become too intense and you can take a moment to enjoy a coffee and a snack, confident in the knowledge that you still have the whole day ahead to carry out all your errands. My mornings will only be more glorious now that Kafe Katerina has opened its doors. Brand new, it has everything you could want from a café and more. Offering freshly baked pastries, fresh juices and – yes, you’ve guessed it - fresh coffee, Kafe Katerina is set to become a regular hang-out for Marbella locals. Alongside tasty milkshakes and crepes, there are also healthier options for fitness fanatics including porridge made with almond, soya or coconut milk. For those of you who are not early risers, do not fear as the café offers an all day English breakfast as well as a scrumptious lunch menu. Dishes include Lightly Smoked Salmon, Roasted Vegetable Salad and Duck Breast with Berry Sauce. Everything is available to take away if you are looking for lunch or a morning coffee on the run and the café also

welcomes larger groups celebrating a special occasion, such as a baby shower or birthday party.

Open Monday to Saturday, 8:30 – 5pm Aloha Gardens, Local 11, Avda Del Prado, Nueva Andalucia kafekaterina.com

Don’t just take our word for it, try it out for yourself!

ast month, Siesta Homes presented Campeones Juniors with their new football kits at the Instituto Mediteranneo in Estepona. The event was preceded by an opening ceremony, after which the boys displayed their football skills on the pitch.

VAMOS CAMPEONES!

Morten Remo founder of Siesta Homes explains, “Siesta Homes is assisting Campeones Junior with professional help, ranging from marketing and equipment to financial support and we are excited to witness our great champions flourish into the confident little winners they deserve to be!”

Campeones Junior was born from a father’s desire to see his child play in a football team. When he discovered that no one would take his child, due to lack of sporting ability, he decided to take matters into his own hands and hired a pitch, inviting children to play for free. Within minutes, children from all walks of life had approached him, all of them with one thing in common; they had all been rejected from football teams for various reasons ranging from poverty to family problems. Many never thought they would ever be part of a football team.

G

Pablo Reinoso realised that there was a genuine need for these children to be incorporated into a team sport and to be valued, not just by their peers and the community, but more importantly by themselves.

THE MUSIC SOUNDS BETTER WITH… GARUM!

arum Restaurant, located on Marbella’s busy Paseo Maritimo, has long been a favourite dining spot for local residents and tourists. Boasting sumptuous cosmopolitaninspired cuisine and unparalleled views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Garum team delivers a flawless experience for every guest.

There really will be no better place to be throughout autumn and winter for that special dining experience. garummarbella.com

However, to enjoy Garum at its best, we urge you to visit the restaurant on one of their special live music nights. Garum started welcoming live acts more than seven years ago, so the place is now widely known for its entertaining dinner shows. Spicing up any ordinary dining experience, especially throughout the winter months, couples and families can sit back and enjoy an entire evening of fun, dancing and good food. Garum offers a special four-course set menu for 38€ on these evenings, which includes a mixed starter plate, three main courses to choose from and a mixed dessert platter. Live music acts who will be gracing Garum with their presence include Carly, who performs both golden oldies and some newer hits and Monica Silverstrand, a professional Swedish singer who has travelled the world singing with famous stars like Celine Dion and Michael Bolton. Finally, Amanda Rosa, a classically trained singer with a vast repertoire, sings everything from jazz, blues, swing, rock, opera and Broadway classics.

A SECRET TOO GOOD TO KEEP

F

rench restaurant ‘Le Discret’, located on a beautiful tree lined street in Nueva Andalucia, is a firm favourite with the SOCIETY Marbella team. When print deadline is upon us and there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything finished, we often find ourselves stopping by Le Discret for a quick soup, quiche and to replenish our thought processes. We were therefore delighted to hear that the team is introducing an Autumn/ Winter repertoire. The new menu features many of the classic French dishes that guests have come to expect from Le Discret, such as Foie Gras and Sole Meuniere. However, there are some welcome new additions, which will be ideal for the slightly cooler winter season. Perhaps a warming French Onion Soup
