Happy November, all! I know – sounds a bit weird, doesn’t it? November so often seems like a bit of a stepping stone into Christmas that we don’t really know what to do with it. Anyway, if you’re in that state of waiting for it officially to be time to start the Christmas shopping (hint – you can never be too early!), we have more than enough to keep you busy this month. Our November cover star is Katy Perry, who has a more interesting back story that you might suspect if you just know her as the woman who sang ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and married and divorced Russell Brand. She has a work ethic that would have floored Margaret Thatcher and obviously has perseverance stamped right through her, otherwise the setbacks that she has experienced would have overwhelmed her. She is very sharp and is a past master at promoting herself in new and exciting ways, which means that we will probably be still featuring her decades from now. What’s been dominating the news lately? Well, apart from Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump’s stand-off, the BREXIT negotiations and the huge scandal emerging from Hollywood about the behaviour of Harvey Weinstein and other major industry figures, it’s been all about the central Spanish government’s decision to reel in Catalunya. Of course, these situations don’t just blow up out of nothing, so we asked our resident expert on all things historical, Padre Peter, to put together an in-depth investigation of this very beautiful – and wealthy – part of the country. By Kj Elsdon Whatever you might think of Katy Perry (the best pop princess that America has turned out since Britney, or an overhyped madam who can’t even be relied upon to hit the right note when singing live), it cannot be denied that she is not easily avoided. Not only have her five albums sold millions of copies around the world, she is extremely adept at self-promotion.

er singing career aside, she has appeared in several feature films and has even made her own ‘access all areas’ documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me in 2012. Unfortunately (or fortunately, as the cynics will claim) her brief marriage to British bad-boy comedian, Russell Brand was imploding at the time of filming and Perry spared her audience nothing of her tearful meltdowns. If Brand was treating their marriage with contempt there was no way that the world was going to be denied her response to the fallout. Born in Santa Barbara, California on the 25th of October 1984 to Pentecostal preachers Maurice Keith Hudson and his wife, Mary Christine Perry, Katie’s love of singing soon resulted in her being a regular performer in her parents’ church and, as a teenager, pursuing a career in gospel music. Much has been made of Perry’s religious upbringing, but the truth is that both Maurice and Mary found religion comparatively late after both experienced what they later described as a “wild youth”. Perry’s image scarcely conforms to the basic tenets of BornAgain Christianity, but she retains a close relationship with her parents. Her childhood certainly sounds different: as children Perry, her older sister Angela and younger brother David, were banned from eating the popular American cereal, Lucky Charms as the name reminded her mother too much of Lucifer and when devilled eggs were served they had to be referred to as “angelled eggs”. That the post-fame Perry has never sought to ridicule these bouts of maternal religious mania says a great deal about her loyalty and sense of family honour. What Mama Perry thought when young Katy brought Russell Brand home for the first time can only be imagined. Perry, who seems to have been a bright student, left school at the age of 15 to pursue a career in music, briefly studying

Italian opera at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. After being talent-spotted by Nashvillebased musicians, Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp, who took her to the music obsessed city to hone her songwriting and performing skills, she also started to record demos and, as a result of her new friends’ hothousing, managed to land a recording contract with Red Hill Records. Her debut album was a gospel collection entitled Katy Hudson, which was a hit with critics but sold a meagre 200 copies before Red Hill Records

Deciding that using her real name might cause people to confuse her with the actress Kate Hudson, she employed her mother’s maiden name to become Katy Perry and made the move from gospel to mainstream pop, writing songs with musician Glen Ballard, who most famously co-wrote and produced Alanis Morissette’s ground-breaking album, Jagged Little Pill back in 1995. As early career moves go, this proved that Perry was a young woman with an eye on the main chance. In 2004 Perry signed to Ballard’s label, Java, which formed part of the much larger Island Def Jam Music Group, a decision that must have taken her all of five seconds to make. However, the next few months proved not to be plain sailing as Java was dropped but Ballard, clearly taking his responsibilities to his new charge seriously, introduced Perry to Tim Devine, an influential A&R man at Columbia Records where she was soon signed as a solo artist. Columbia was good to Perry for a while, carefully nurturing her talent and introducing her to proven songwriting talents such as, among others, Desmond Child who had written hits for Bon Jovi, Cher, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Ricky Martin and Joan Jett &

the Blackhearts, Greg Wells (who had written and performed with Mika, Rufus Wainwright, Celine Dion and Crash Test Dummies to name but a few), Dr. Luke (who would later go on to work with Pink, Flo Rida, Pitbull, Jessie J, Miley Cyrus and Kesha) and Max Martin (also linked with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and N Sync).

Perry was finally where she needed to be – but unfortunately this situation was not to last and, in 2006 when an album was nearing completion, she was dropped. This must have felt like a major setback but Perry’s resilience proved invaluable, as she took on a job at Taxi Music, an independent A&R company. Despite the downturn in her fortunes that resulted in her eviction from Columbia Records, Perry also experienced some good luck. She was chosen to provide backing vocals for Mick Jagger’s ‘Old Habits Die Hard’ which was included in the soundtrack to the 2004 remake of the 1960s Michael Caine classic, Alfie. Even more rewarding was the news that ‘Simple’ – a track that she had recorded during her time with Glen Ballard – had been chosen to appear on the soundtrack for the 2005 movie, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Eventually, in April 2007, Perry managed to find another record deal, this time with Capitol Records, the company working quickly to pair her with Dr. Luke to add a copper-bottomed smash hit to her earlier material. The result was ‘Hot n Cold’ and ‘I Kissed a Girl’, which quickly became an international earworm following its release in April 2008.
From this point on the well-oiled Katy Perry publicity machine barely paused. Her album, One of the Boys, was heavily promoted and spawned four hit singles: ‘I Kissed a Girl’, ‘Hot n Cold’, ‘Thinking of You’ and ‘Waking Up in Vegas’. Perry also embarked on the Warped tour in 2008, which was a handy platform for promoting the new album, not that it seemed to need much help because, on the back of the ‘I Kissed a Girl’ it flew off the shelves. Success was now Perry’s, but a certain amount of turbulence was also around the corner. In the summer of 2009 Perry was filming a cameo appearance in a black comedy called Get Him to the Greek, featuring soi-disant comedian, Russell Brand, when the pair collided romantically. Perhaps his trademark Victorian cockney urchin schtick struck a chord with Perry, or maybe it was just because he represented something completely different from her strait-laced

fundamentalist Christian upbringing, but the Perry-Brand liaison quickly became standard British tabloid fare. Speculation was rife; what would Ma and Pa Perry say when they encountered their daughter’s self-confessed druggie boyfriend? How would Brand adapt to Perry’s hippy-dippy Californian ways? For a while it seemed that opposites really did attract, although the waves caused by the romance almost overshadowed the launch of her next album, Teenage Dream. This release proved a record-breaker, launching a further six hits: ‘California Gurls’, ‘Teenage Dream’, ‘Firework’, ‘E.T.’, ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ and ‘The One That Got Away’. The first five tracks reached Number One on the Billboard Charts, with the sixth peaking at Number Three. With this staggering achievement Katy Perry became the first woman to have enjoyed five Number Ones from

THAT WAS A LOT OF MONEY FOR ME. one album and only the second artist generally (after Michael Jackson’s 1987 album, Bad). Teenage Dream went on to sell more than six million copies worldwide and netted Perry seven Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Record of the Year. It went on to win International Album of the Year at Canada’s Juno Awards. Perry married Brand in a lavish Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan, India on October the 23rd 2010. The whole
event was so ludicrously overblown, extravagant and (some would say) vulgar that the international press had a field day, speculating that the length of the marriage would prove to be in inverse proportion to the cost of the ceremony. As it happened they were right. In the meantime Perry had an album to promote and, in February 2011, she started her California Dreams Tour, which only finished in January 2012 and ultimately raked in an impressive $59.5 million worldwide. However, by the time Perry had played her final venue, Brand had cruelly – and unilaterally – announced the couple’s divorce. When Katy Perry: Part of Me, a documentary feature was released the impending divorce and Perry’s emotional meltdowns on camera rather detracted from the initial intention of the film, although it made a very healthy $32.7 million at the box office. If 2012 spelled the official end of her marriage, Perry was determined that she should also gain some positive perspective on the year. She started work on her next album, Prism and entered a relationship with John Mayer, a musician who has struggled to make an impact outside America. Before the couple split in early 2014 they co-wrote a duet, ‘Who You Love’ which appeared on Mayer’s Paradise Valley album. Prism was finally released on October the 18th 2013 and gave Perry a further five hits in the shape of ‘Roar’, ‘Unconditionally’, ‘Dark Horse’, ‘Birthday’ and ‘This is How We Do’. Showing that her previous enthusiasm for hard work was in no way dampened by her growing popularity or erratic private life, Perry took to the road again for the Prismatic World Tour. This mammoth spectacle consisted of 38 dates in Europe, 66 in North America, 25 in Oceania, 12 in Asia and 10 in Latin America and made a staggering $204.3 million at the box office. Fans clearly couldn’t get enough of Perry’s live performances, although the keen of ear could occasionally detect that her tuning was imperfect. A performance of ‘Firework’ on the UK talent show, X Factor was memorably flat and off-key, with Perry struggling to hit some of the higher notes.
‘Bon Appétit’, ‘Swish Swish’ and ‘Save as Draft’ have kept her in the international charts. Always happy to take on promotional work, Perry opened her doors to fans via Katy Perry Live: Witness World Wide, a live stream available via YouTube, which ran for four days and culminated on June the 12th with a live concert. This generated 49 million views from 190 different countries and a behind-thescenes spin-off entitled Will You Be My Witness? premiered on YouTube Red in October. Katy Perry’s work ethic is second to none and no doubt she will be back in the recording studio next year, although at least some of her time will involve sitting down, as she has just signed a $25 million contract to be a judge on the ABC revival of the classic TV talent show, American Idol. Who will be brave enough to serenade her with one of her own songs?
Released earlier this year, Witness has already continued Perry’s global domination. While the tabloids were breathlessly following the singer’s latest romance (a brief fling with actor Orlando Bloom) she was busy in the recording studio. Witness has perhaps failed to garner the glowing critical reviews of her previous albums, but the hits have kept coming: ‘Chained to the Rhythm’,

Hollywood Babylon Back in the 1950s filmmaker Kenneth Anger – in need of making some quick money – wrote a book with the above title, detailing Tinsletown’s worst excesses and scandals. This proved so popular that in 1984 Anger released another Hollywood Babylon book, which proved equally addictive. It seems we can’t get enough of hearing about how essentially warped and depraved the world of movies is, which possibly goes some way to explaining why Harvey Weinstein’s recent very public humiliation seems to have taken over the news media. Actresses from Gwyneth Paltrow to Lupita Nyong’o have broken the silence to tell all about their treatment at the hands of this very active sex pest and alleged rapist, who was one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. It seems that almost every star in L.A. has suffered at the hands of Weinstein and, now the boil has been lanced, some very messy stuff is emerging. The next few months will no doubt result in more allegations as Weinstein continues, like so many abusers before him, to treat his behaviour as an ‘addiction’, something beyond his control. Now, do you still fancy making it in Hollywood?

Ewan McGregor Heads for the Divorce Courts
They were rumoured to have one of the strongest marriages in showbiz, but it looks as though Ewan McGregor’s 22-year marriage to his 51-year-old production designer wife, Eve Mavrakis, has hit the rocks. The first inkling that things were not well chez McGregor came when the actor was spotted canoodling with his Fargo co-star, Mary Elizabeth Winstead in a London restaurant and it has since been claimed that McGregor and Mavrakis have been living separately since May. Unkind rumours have circulated previously about the extent of the working relationships that McGregor has enjoyed with several of his costars (including Moulin Rouge’s Nicole Kidman and Melanie Laurent from the 2011 movie Beginners), but this really does look like a permanent split. According to the tabloids, Mavrakis has been spotted out and about without her wedding ring which, in tabloid speak, is as good as, “You want access to the kids? Speak to my lawyer, loser!”
Kit Harrington’s Cyber-Stalker If you’re not entirely sure that you’re happy about the post-Strictly Saturday night TV schedule being taken up with scenes of violence and torture, blame Kit Harrington. The Game of Thrones actor produced and stars in Gunpowder, a costume drama detailing the plot against the life of James I, under whom Catholics were cruelly persecuted. His ancestor, Robert Catesby, was one of the masterminds behind the infamous plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Publicising the series on BBC1’s The One Show he revealed that he has attracted a cyber-stalker – his dad! It seems that Kit is so busy these days that the easiest way for his father to catch up with what he’s doing is via Google. “Dad jokes that if his computer was seized everyone would think that he was a South American teenage girl,” he joked, giving viewers a good idea of the profile of his typical fanbase. The actor, whose real name is Christopher Catesby Harrington, is related to the would-be regicide through his mother and Gunpowder seems to have been a real labour of love. Now that his engagement to his GoT co-star, Rose Leslie has been announced we have a bit of advice for him – for heaven’s sake slow down, Kit. And ring your dad every so often!

Priscilla Presley’s Farewell to Scientology The Church of Scientology has experienced something of a Lourdesin-reverse effect recently, with some of its major figures (some would say ‘henchmen’) leaving the organisation. Tommy Davis, long known as one of Scientology’s most enthusiastic enforcers, is now pursuing a career in business for instance and there are many other examples of its haemorrhaging support. It can hardly have been happy news for CEO David Miscavige when Priscilla Presley announced that she was leaving the selfstyled church, announcing, “I’m done!” It is commonly thought that Presley signed up as a Scientologist more than 40 years ago, as she attempted to rebuild her life after the death of Elvis and was quite a catch for the cult, which numbers among its numbers stars such as Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Elizabeth Moss. It’s difficult not to imagine that her burgeoning romance with Tom Jones has something to do with this. Sir Tom who, namedropping aside, is famously down-to-earth and rooted in reality will no doubt have been slightly bewildered by Scientology’s more outré aspects. Presley’s daughter, Lisa-Marie very publicly left the church some time ago.
The World’s Hardest Working OAP? There was good news for lovers of the natural world recently when Sir David Attenborough revealed that he has no plans to retire, despite the toll that international travel might be having on his 91-year-old body. He is currently filming four projects while promoting a fifth, Blue Planet II and says that he sees no reason that he can’t continue to work until he’s 100 – as long as the BBC will still have him. He added, “Earth has enough wonders to make more than three Planet Earth series.” Well, if he’s happy to make them, we’re more than willing to watch them!

London is calling! It looks as though we are going to be spending a lot of time in London next year. A massive thank you to superstar Karen Windle for organizing a wonderful fashion show for The Ibiza Fashion Festival in The Grosvenor in Belgravia. We all received a fantastic reaction and great press. This event was attended by some of the best fashion bloggers and stylists in London and the hottest fashionistas and, on the decks, was super DJ, Damian Hess. I think we danced until the early hours. I'm also very excited about telling you all about which luxury boutiques we will be selling our 2018 collection from in January, but someone once told me to work hard in silence and let the success be the noise!

Now that Christmas is coming it's even more important to dig deep and help the needy. One of my long-time favourite restaurants on the Coast is The Boardwalk in Marbella. I spent a fabulous afternoon with some of the best ladies of Marbella in El Chiringuito as it was my friend Tracy’s birthday. You will never go wrong at El Chiringuito; it's possibly my favourite lunch restaurant in Marbella. The views and the service are simply outstanding. You will always find me there, drinking San Pellegrino and eating lobster salad while watching the world go by.
Island Life
I took a trip down to Ibiza for some business - and some pleasure too, of course! Although this is not what you’re thinking, as I didn’t even go near a club. I stayed in the Gran Hotel Montesol right in the Old Town, which was perfect for my meetings. I visited the Ibiza Museum of Contemporary Art and took a tour around the Old Town, read my book, sketched some bikinis and had a spa day. There's one investment that supersedes all others and that is to invest in yourself. I felt totally refreshed after my vacation, ready to rock and start showing my 2018 collection. I visited a beautiful friend of mine, Marinela of the famous Kurru Kurru boutique in Cotton Beach and simply couldn't resist posing on her white Vespa.

Every year La Sala throws the mother of all Halloween parties. The impressive decorations and scary performers are just the beginning of the terrific night. Over the years I have always enjoyed my evenings there with friends and family. Without a doubt La Sala remains one of the best restaurants and night time venues in all of Marbella, so thank you La Sala for always being Number One. I have five Halloween parties to attend this year but the ones I look forward to most is with my son. It’s my favourite time of the year!
I am so thankful to the amazing team at Dynamic Gym who are putting me back into great shape. I love going to Dynamic at least four times a week as it is the best gym in Marbella but, just sometimes, I like to put my headphones on and take a run on the promenade in Marbella and watch the sea and sky. I can honestly tell you I've never seen so many good-looking people and it seems that it's where all the hottest girls exercise. The views of the sea and the sky are so relaxing, it's the perfect start to the day.

Firstly, this month we celebrated the birthday of my youngest daughter, Thalia. We decided to hold the party at home and have a unicorn theme. The children enjoyed magicians, face painters, bouncy castles and a photo booth. A huge thank you to ? for the perfect party planning - the kids and parents all had a blast! Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us.

Next up was the celebration for my friend Danielle’s birthday at La Sala. We had a fabulous day, apart from a little incident involving a daiquiri being poured over someone’s head! Luckily, I own Bardou hair salon, which is just around the corner so, after a quick phone call, I was able to get a stylist there to wash and re-blow dry the victim’s hair in the washroom!

Another day, another birthday! It was my beautiful friend Lisa’s this time, so we headed to one of my favourites, Monkey Club, for food and cocktails and, I have to tell you, their Porn Star Martinis are to die for! Great atmosphere as expected in Puente Romano and scrummy food - what’s not to love? Not that the celebrations ended there! In traditional Marbella style we carried on the party the next day at Tahini to fend off our hangovers, a sushi lover’s dream overlooking a spectacular ocean view.
Being Spoilt
Everyone who knows me realises that I adore my cars, the bigger and faster the better. As a surprise my hubby came home with a pressie of a brand-new Mercedes AMG G wagon for me! As you can see, it’s a struggle at five-three for me to get in and out but, oh, so worth it. I think I’m in love!
We were invited to attend our very good friends Titzy and George’s wedding in Sicily. It was a traditional Italian affair in the most stunning church I’ve ever seen. My girls were flower girls and I can honestly say I’ve never seen such a beautiful wedding party. I have fallen in love with Sicily and can’t wait to return to explore more.
Introducing the Bardou Foundation
Now that Bardou is established as a successful business, it seems the right time to branch out a little and do something to help others. The Bardou Foundation has chosen to ally itself against the current epidemic of human trafficking, 55 per cent of which involves girls and young women, who are taken against their will to join the sex trade or be used as slave labour. IDG (the International Day of the Girl) seeks to turn the tide against this horrible trade in human suffering and help girls to fulfil their true potential. We are so proud to be involved in this wonderful cause.

By Kj Elsdon In the UK there are now two official journalistic silly seasons; the first occurs during July and August when Parliament is in recess and the second rears its head shortly afterwards when the final roster of celebrities is announced for the annual camp glitterfest that is Strictly Come Dancing. If you haven’t previously encountered the phenomenon of the Curse of Strictly, this has nothing to do with injuries sustained during energetic jives or unwisely choreographed Charlestons, but everything to do with broken relationships. There is clearly something fidelity-threatening about throwing a C-list celebrity together with a perfectly muscled professional dancer possessing unimaginable levels of stamina and it is undoubtedly true that Strictly, as it is affectionately known, does have a history of sledgehammering established relationships. Here are some of the most infamous cases of the Curse of Strictly.
Matt di Angelo and Flavia Cacace
During her second Strictly outing Flavia was paired with young and lovely actor, Matt di Angelo and it didn’t take the tabloids long to suspect that their clinches didn’t stop when Dave Arch and His Wonderful Orchestra ceased to play. Sure enough,
shortly after the 2007 final it was officially announced that Flavia and Vincent had split and that she and Matt were in a relationship. Simone’s own private life also attracted a blizzard of media interest as he announced that he had fathered a
baby with a woman with whom he was no longer in a relationship (due to a dalliance with fellow pro Kristina Rihanoff, of whom more later), although the pair later reunited and had another child together, finally marrying in 2015.
Natasha Kaplinsky and Brendan Cole
Way back in 2004, when God was a boy and Strictly had only just been launched, dance pro Brendan Cole was partnered with newsreader, Natasha Kaplinsky. Cole was engaged to his fellow pro, Camilla Dallerup (who had been paired with teakhued antique expert David Dickinson) and Kaplinsky was also in a relationship, but that didn’t stop the pair waltzing off into the sunset together, much to Dallerup’s chagrin. Naturally, the relationship didn’t last long outside the TV studio and the pair later married other partners. However, the scene had effectively been set for years of speculation and gossip. Brendan and Natasha’s hot affair might have ignited the show’s first series, but more terpsichorean hook-ups were in the offing when Argentine Tango experts and real-life couple, Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace, joined the team for the fourth. Flavia was partnered with elderly comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, who retired early due to a health scare but it all kicked off the next year.

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna
America’s Brian Fortuna was only involved in Series Six and Seven of Strictly, his first outing seeing him paired with M People singer, Heather Small. However, in 2009 he was partnered with Hollyoaks actress, Ali Bastian and the tabloids soon spun into their annual rumour-creating mode. Bastian had been in a relationship around the time of her entry into the competition, although the exact dates of its end and the beginning of her fling with Fortuna are rather blurry. As with many other Strictly liaisons this failed to thrive outside the white heat of competition and the couple announced that they had parted company the following year.
Georgia May Foote and Giovanni Pernice Coronation Street actress Georgia May Foote was reported to be dating her co-star, Sean Ward when she entered the Strictly ‘process’ in 2015 but this failed to survive the heat of her dance partnership with smouldering Italian pro, Giovanni Pernice. The tabloids had a field day throughout the competition before the couple’s cover was finally blown on a sickly-sweet trip to Disneyland Paris. However, before training started for the 2016 series it was announced that the romance was over, the couple listing their busy schedules as the reason behind the split.
Jimi Mistry and Flavia Cacace
The Cacace-di Angelo liaison lasted for almost three years but, in 2010, Flavia was partnered with East Is East and EastEnders actor, Jimi Mistry. Mistry, who was married at the time, found himself as unable as Matt di Angelo to resist Cacace’s admittedly abundant charms and gossip soon started circulating that the pair were practising the offstage rumba. In this case the relationship proved its longevity, with Mistry obtaining a divorce from his first wife and marrying Cacace at the end of 2013. Vincent and Flavia still perform together happily, their stage shows which have tended to revolve around their dance speciality, the fiendishly difficult and showy Argentine Tango.
Rachel Riley and Pasha Kovalev
Countdown’s Rachel Riley was recently married when she signed up to the 2013 season, but then she met up with her dance partner, Pasha Kovalev and it wasn’t long before her impending divorce was being mentioned. Of course, she attempted to spare her ex’s feelings by claiming that it had absolutely nothing to do with being held in a clinch for hours every day by a man with a body buffed to within a millimetre of perfection, but in 2014 the news finally broke that the RileyKovalev partnership extended beyond the dancefloor. Riley’s divorce came through and her relationship with Pasha is apparently still ongoing.

However, probably the most infamous of all the Strictly homewreckers is Kristina Rihanoff who, it is said, ruined two marriages and almost ended Vincent Simone’s relationship with his current partner. Her nickname, the Siberian Siren, was always an uneasy fit and she was easily upset when quizzed about her rackety love life by tabloid journalists. Nonetheless, it is to Rihanoff we must turn to find the beating heart of the Strictly curse.
Joe Calzaghe and Kristina Rihanoff Arriving on the scene in time for Series Six in 2008, Rihanoff was first given the unenviable task of whipping TV journalist, John Sergeant into shape. A dedicated non-dancer – and a happily married man in late middle-age, to boot – a backstage rendezvous between Rihanoff and Sergeant was never likely to set Britain’s notoriously gossipy media alight. However, in 2009 the Siberian Siren’s luck was in when she was paired with Welsh boxer, Joe Calzaghe. Despite being reliably hopeless and wooden on the dancefloor, Calzaghe obviously impressed Rihanoff offstage. Within weeks of the start of Series Seven it was rumoured that he had left his girlfriend of five years to move in with his dancing partner. The relationship lasted until August 2013, when sources close to the couple hinted at an amicable parting of the ways.

Ben Cohen and Kristina Rihanoff Surely it was completely coincidental that the great Calzaghe-Rihanoff romance ended around the time that rehearsals for Series 11 began and England international rugby player, Ben Cohen entered the scene? By the time Rihanoff and Cohen were voted out in week nine (Calzaghe only managed to last until week five, largely due to his loyal Welsh fanbase) stories were already circulating about the state of Cohen’s marriage. His wife, Abby (with whom he had two children), proved a feisty favourite with the press, her formidable mother too, as both seemed happy to label the Siberian Siren as a heartless homewrecker. Cohen, by contrast, seemed as hapless as a newly landed fish, flopping between his wife and his girlfriend until news of Rihanoff’s pregnancy broke and he seemed to be forced into making a clear choice. The couple’s daughter was born early in 2016 and appear still to be together although, following her pregnancy and the furore surrounding her love-life, she decided to make a clean break with Strictly Come Dancing, like Flavia Cacace and Vincent Simone before her.

Louise Redknapp and…Daisy Lowe?
Over the years the curse of Strictly has taken many forms, the most obvious being its tendency to cause rifts in marriages and long-term relationships, but this does not always involve a celebrity running off with his or her dance partner. In the case of Louise Redknapp the catalyst that resulted in the fracturing of her nearly 20-year marriage to ex-footballer, Jamie Redknapp was a fellow celebrity. Partnered with Kevin Clifton, recently married to his fellow pro Karen Hauer, there was not a breath of scandal about the pair’s relationship, but all was clearly not well on Planet Redknapp as Louise rediscovered her inner dance goddess, reaching the finals and thereafter landing the part of Sally Bowles in a touring production of Cabaret. By this time the downmarket British newspapers were awash with rumours that she was on the verge of divorce, that her husband was refusing to watch her perform in her new role and that he blamed her fellow contestant, 28-year-old model Daisy Lowe, for reconnecting her with youthful pursuits, such as partying until dawn and complaining that her marriage was turning her into a “Stepford wife”. It’s not hard to see how this must have played at home, although both Louise and Jamie have denied that they are filing for divorce - just yet. In the meantime, Daisy Lowe has taken to gushing about the pair’s friendship: “'I don’t use best friend often especially with someone I’ve only known for a year but Louise Redknapp completely changed my life and the two of us became these kind of wonderful confidence boosters for one another. I would never in a million years have the confidence to set up my own business, my own company, my own podcast if it wasn’t for the incredible nurture of one of my best friends. We’re like each other’s cheerleaders.”
Strictly Come Controversy
Much has been made of the ‘ringers’ that appear on the show, in other words stars who have previous dance experience. Of course, with many celebrity participants having had a theatre school background this is inevitable, but some seem more at home on the dancefloor than others. Denise van Outen was a popular target in 2012, while this year has been notable for Alexandra Burke’s sterling performances. Of course, Burke’s recent CV includes a stint on Sister Act which was choreographed by none other than… Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood! This year’s People’s Favourite, Susan Calman, offended the more radical members of the LBGT community by opting to dance with a man. As a lesbian it was thought that she should have demanded her right to dance with one of the female dance pros. At the time of writing her platonic love-in with Grimsby’s Kevin Clifton continues to thrive. Whether it was justified or not, Aliona Vilani gained a reputation as a bit of a minx after her controversial comments about the way the show was run hit the tabloids. She was also accused of teasing a relationship with her 2015 partner, Jay McGuinness, to gain maximum publicity. She left the team after winning the series with McGuinness, but her
Strictly connection doesn’t appear to be over yet: children’s TV presenter, Johnny Ball recently accused her of faking an injury when partnering him back in 2012 so that she could enjoy a holiday with her boyfriend. It’s unusual for a celebrity to leave for reasons other than ill health (Jimmy Tarbuck was advised by medical experts to retire early in 2006) or the demise of a loved one (her father’s death caused Kelly Brook to leave in 2007) but the loveably hopeless John Sergeant pulled out in 2008, graciously stating that it wasn’t fair that he should continue in the process when other, better dancers were being voted out. However, one of last year’s biggest scandals revolved around the withdrawal of the notoriously thin-skinned singer Will Young after an on-air spat with former Head Judge, Len Goodman. Gossips estimated that Young’s departure was only half due to Goodman and that the rehearsal process demanded more time, energy and application than the singer was willing to commit. Probably the greatest amount of Strictlyrelated controversy was generated by James and Ola Jordan. James left the show after the 2013 series, while Ola stayed until 2015. This married couple never shied away from speaking their minds and, it was rumoured, going up against their
fellow pros. An exasperated Karen Hauer (now married to Kevin Clifton) reportedly once said, “You’re a rubbish dancer, Ola. That’s why you’re always at the back.” Insiders claim that this attack was in response to months of bad feeling between the pair. Husband James still maintains a side-line in stirring, recently slamming Brendan Cole for an on-air spat with new Head Judge, Shirley Ballas. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose as Pierre, my French penfriend, used to say.

Living the Dream This new comedy drama concerns the experiences of Mal and Jen Pemberton (played by Philip Glenister and Lesley Sharp) who move with their two children, Tina and Freddie, to Florida to escape the grey skies of Yorkshire. Mal has invested a considerable whack of his savings in a Florida trailer park, intending to start a family business, but it isn’t long before he and Jen discover that the American dream is a somewhat elusive concept.
The White Princess Having built a reputation on a steady diet of classic TV it is quite surprising that bosses of niche channel Drama have chosen to pick up this new series, a sequel to The White Queen, which was screened on BBC1 a couple of years ago. Originally shown on American cable channel Starz, The White Princess follows the fortunes of Elizabeth of York whose dynastic marriage to Henry VII, the first Tudor king and father to the more notorious Henry VIII, was far from successful. Of course, this is merely the opinion of Philippa Gregory, who wrote the novel of the same name; other historians claim that both parties enjoyed a perfectly happy union. Doctor Foster star, Jodie Comer, stars in the title role with Jacob Collins-Levy as Henry VII.

My choice of books by three of my favourite Spanish writers, which are fortunately translated into English. By Eleanor McKenzie
S
pain has a wealth of great writers and some of them, but sadly not all, have novels available in English. My first introduction to the contemporary Spanish literature scene was through the writing of Almudena Grandes, who I read before moving here. I then discovered Arturo Pérez-Reverte shortly after I arrived here to live and then added Ildefonso Falcones to my library. Each one is a very different style of storyteller, so it is pointless to compare them, and as one of my English professors at university said, “Comparisons are odious,” – so instead I’ll just look at the stories they tell and hopefully whet your appetite for a bit of book reading.

Almudena Grandes I started by reading “The Ages of Lulu”, which I stumbled across in a charity shop. The story, which is set in Madrid, follows the sexual awakening of narrator Lulu, seduced at age 15 by an old family friend, Pablo, who poses as her guardian and then as her father, and who ultimately marries her. It is a bit de Sade and sometimes Story of O. However, not all her novels are this racy. Next on my list is “The Wind from the East”. Anyone who has heard about how the coastal winds in Cadiz drive people mad will relate to this tome. In this tale, two former Madrid residents settle in a small Andalusian housing development by the sea. As they arrive, that nipping and eager air is rocking the awnings and slamming the shutters with a suitably demonic force. Sara Gómez is a wealthy, childless, middle-aged woman with a secret past. Juan Olmedo is a mature and ruminative doctor with an even more secret past. The two meet up while living opposite each other with only the howling gale, between them." It's the east wind," seems to be the explanation for al kinds of behaviour in this novel.
Arturo Pérez-Reverte My introduction to this writer was through “The Club Dumas.” It’s a literary thriller in which Lucas Corso is a book detective, hired to hunt down rare editions for wealthy and unscrupulous clients. When a well-known bibliophile is found dead, leaving behind part of the original manuscript of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers, Corso is brought in to authenticate the fragment. He is soon drawn into a dynamic plot involving devil worship, occult practices, and swashbuckling derring-do among a cast of characters bearing a suspicious resemblance to those of Dumas's masterpiece. Aided by a mysterious beauty named for a Conan Doyle heroine, Corso travels from Madrid to Toledo to Paris on the killer's trail in this twisty intellectual romp through the book world. I followed this up with “Queen of the South,” which I devoured. It has been made into a TV series, but it isn’t a patch on the book. By the way, the leading lady buys a villa in Guadalmina! Few great novels get more local. Guero Davila is a pilot engaged in drugsmuggling for the local cartels. Teresa Mendoza is his girlfriend, a typical narco's girlfriend-- quiet, doting, submissive. But then Guero's caught playing both sides, and in Sinaloa, that means death. Teresa finds herself alone, terrified, friendless and running to save her life, carrying nothing but a gym bag containing a pistol and a notebook that she has been forbidden to read. Forced to leave Mexico, she flees to the Spanish city of Melilla, where she meets Santiago Fisterra, a Galician involved in trafficking hashish across the Strait of Gibraltar. When Santiago's partner is captured, it is Teresa who steps in to take his place. This leads her to southern Spain, to hiring a lawyer in Marbella and becoming Queen of the South. Is she ruthless? You bet she is!
Ildefonso Falcones I heard people talking about “The Cathedral of the Sea” and just had to read it. This formed the beginning of an unswerving loyalty to Falcones for his ability to capture Spain of other eras and enlighten the modern reader about political and social situations of the time. I was surprised to discover that he is a practising lawyer and take my hat off to him for managing to find the time to write books of such great length and with a mountain of small details that could only have come from hours of research. I wouldn’t classify his work as historical fiction, it is much more literary than that. “Cathedral of the Sea” follows the fortunes of the Estanyol family, from their peasant roots to a son, Arnau, who flees the land only to realize spectacular wealth and devastating problems. During Arnau’s lifetime Barcelona becomes a city of light and darkness, dominated by the construction of the city’s great pride—the cathedral of Santa Maria del Mar— and by its shame, the deadly Inquisition. As a young man, Arnau joins the powerful guild of stone-workers and helps to build the church with his own hands, while his best friend and adopted brother Joan studies to become a priest. When Arnau, who secretly loves a forbidden Jewish woman named Mar, is betrayed and hauled before the Inquisitor, he finds himself face to face with his own brother. Will he lose his life just as his beloved Cathedral of the Sea is finally completed? This is a slow starter, but don’t let that put you off. All of a sudden it picks up pace and you’re off at a gallop. If you are interested in Spanish gypsies and Moorish Spain, then “The Hand of Fatima” is one for you. Briefly, it is a story set in the Kingdom of Granada in 1564 and focuses on two cultures and two loves, where one man is forced to make a choice. After years of Christian oppression, the Moors take arms and paint the white houses of Sierra Nevada with the blood of their victims. Amidst the conflict is young Hernando, the son of an Arab woman and the Christian priest who raped her. He is despised and regularly beaten by his own stepfather for his 'tainted' heritage. Caridad is swept into an exotic fringe society full of romance and art, passion and dancing. I can’t wait to start it!

T
he Autonomous Region of Cataluña in the north east of Spain and on the borders of France, consists of the provinces of Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida, and Girona. In France itself the district of Rousillon may also be considered Catalán. But whilst there is no discernable movement for independence in that area, any consideration of Catalán nationalism has also to take into account other “Catalán countries” who may also be encouraged to make claims; Valencia and the Balearic Islands.

Cataluña itself is the richest and most industrialised part of Spain. Its textile industry dates back to the thirteenth century, and remained dominant until the 1950s, when industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and metalworking came into prominence. Car manufacturing for Seat and Nissan also predominate, and this has encouraged the growth of petroleum refining in Tarragona. The tourism industry is highly developed. The region has played an important part in the history of the peninsula, but only once, in
the eleventh century, has it been truly independent. The failure of Hugh Capet (940-996), the first King of the Franks, to help Count Borrell II beat back the Moors under Almanzor in 987, resulted in the region declaring independence. By 1070 Count Ramon Berenguer I had subordinated the local magnates and leaders of the region into what is recognisably the embryonic County of Barcelona. Two factors favoured this movement; stable government and cultural prosperity. When in 1137, Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona married Petronila, Queen of Aragon, the region was sufficiently well organised to have a Corts; a representative body of nobles and ecclesiastics able to check the king’s authority. By this marriage Cataluña became a principality of the Kingdom of Aragon. In the 13th century King Jaime I conquered Valencia and

the Balearic Islands, and by 1350 it was stated that the crown of Aragon “presided over one of the most extensive and powerful mercantile empires of the Mediterranean”. In 1469 the son of Juan II of Aragon, Fernando, married Isabel of Castile, and so it became part of a unified kingdom, whilst retaining its autonomy and its Corts, to which had been added the standing body known as the Generalitat, which included representatives of the rising bourgeoisie. Whilst the marriage of the monarchs was happy and successful, the marriage of Cataluña with the rest of the peninsula was not. As early as 1410, when the male line of the Counts of Barcelona failed, a new Trastámara dynasty ascended the Aragonese throne, and rumblings of discontent began to be heard. This finally broke out into open rebellion during the reign of Juan II “The Faithless” (13981479), and lasted from 1458 until the king’s death in 1479. The unification of what later became known as “Spain” hastened the decline in Cataluña’s influence. This had already started in the mid 14th century when famine and plague had decimated the region. The population dropped from half to a quarter of a million, sparking the sort of tensions and revolts which hit England at the time of the Black Death. The “Age of Discovery”, which brought riches from the Americas to prosper Andalusia, further diminished Cataluña. The Mediterranean lost much of its trading importance as a result of the new Atlantic routes. Discontent at such decline continued to simmer, until in 1640 the region placed itself under the protection of Louis XIV of France. The revolt was put down in the 1650s. When on November 1st, 1700, Carlos II of Spain died, Spain was left without a ruler. He was physically disabled, mentally retarded and disfigured. A large tongue made his speech difficult to understand. He was bald by the age of 35, and he died senile and wracked
by epileptic seizures. He had two wives, but being impotent he had no children. (This happens after 16 generations of inbreeding!) The three principal powers of Europe, England, France and the Dutch Republic all had an interest in the succession. In 1698 they had signed a treaty agreeing that Prince Joseph Ferdinand of Bavaria should accede to the Spanish throne. However in 1699 he died. Two new treaties, in 1699 and 1700, partitioned the territories under Spanish rule, and awarded Spain itself to the Archduke Charles, second son of Leopold, the Holy Roman Emperor.
CATALUÑA ITSELF IS THE RICHEST AND MOST INDUSTRIALISED PART OF SPAIN. Leopold and the Spanish Grandees refused to accept the partition of territories, and in despair Carlos II made a will leaving his entire empire to Philip, duc d’Anjou, the grandson of Louis XIV. Upon the death of Carlos, Louis declared his grandson to be Felipe V, King of Spain, the Spanish Netherlands, and all Spanish colonies. As a consequence the War of the Spanish Succession broke out, with France supporting Felipe, and with England, the Dutch, the Holy Roman Empire, Prussia, Portugal and various German states supporting the Archduke Charles. Cataluña declared its support for Charles. When in 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht brought the war to a close, it left Spain in the hands of Felipe V, first Bourbon King of Spain, (and, of course, it also left Gibraltar in the hands of the British). Under him Spain ceased to be a “de facto” unified state, and became a “de jure” centralised one. In pursuit of this aim in 1714 he invaded Cataluña, and abolished its constitution and autonomy. (It would be a strange quirk of history if it was under his descendant Felipe VI that a similar situation was brought to pass!)

For a time Cataluña remained quiescent. But during the 19th century events in Madrid once again stirred the hearts of Cataláns. On 29th March 1830 the unpopular and illiberal Fernando VII issued a “Pragmatic Sanction” which ratified a decree issued by Carlos IV in 1789 replacing the “Salic Law” established by Felipe V. Felipe, a French Bourbon, introduced this law into Spain from France. It stated that no woman could succeed to the throne. Fernando, however, fathered only two daughters, Isabella and Luisa Fernando. His “Pragmatic Sanction” restored the old Spanish custom by which a woman could inherit. In effect, this debarred his brother Carlos from the throne, which under Salic Law he would have inherited. When, therefore, Fernando died on the 29th September, 1833, mourned by virtually nobody, Isabella, at the age of three, was proclaimed Queen of Spain. Don Carlos was firmly supported by the “Apostólico”, an extreme conservative clerical party, which in 1827 had mobilised a group of paramilitary royalist volunteers, many of them Cataláns sporting the Carlist red beret. So began the “Carlist Wars”. Cataluña sided with Don Carlos against Isabella. The Carlist movement, although defeated, managed a second war in the 1840s, an attempted military coup d’état in 1860, and an all-out war between 1872 and 1876 following the deposition of Isabella II. Following the restoration of her son,

IN SEPTEMBER, 1932, CATALUÑA BECAME AN AUTONOMOUS STATE WITHIN SPAIN WITH THE HISTORIC NAME THE “GENERALITAT DE CATALUNYA.” Alfonso XII in 1874, Carlism, as it was called, declined in importance until 1900 to 1902. Following the defeat of Spain in the Spanish-American War and the loss of her colonies it had a brief resurgence. As we shall see, this defeat also had a profound influence on Cataluña. Despite this, however, Carlism gradually weakened until it was merged with the “Falange” (a Spanish political organisation of Fascist inspiration active in 1933 and 1934) by General Franco. The Carlist party’s vicissitudes, however, prompted the conservative elements in Cataluña to look elsewhere for the means to restore the region’s importance. So appeared the “Renaixença” or Rebirth. Beginning in the 1850s serious efforts were made to revive the language and culture of the region, but political considerations quickly came to the fore. The Catalán general, Juan Prim, had led an abortive revolution in 1868 in an attempt to liberalise the Spanish government which was becoming increasingly authoritarian under Isabella II, and this in turn had led to the establishment of the short lived First
Republic. Many Cataláns expected a similar republic to be established in Cataluña, but on 29 December 1874 a coup d’état led by General Martinéz Campos restored the Bourbon monarchy in the personage of Don Alfonso de Borbón, son of Isabel II. After 1876 the Church threw its weight behind the republican movement, which led to calls for full autonomy. This movement for autonomy had two strands: the conservative Church led one, and the other was both liberal and secular… This latter strand placed considerable emphasis on Cataluña’s history. The past was used to give meaning and legitimacy to present aspirations. An emphasis began to be laid on the difference between Catalans and other Spaniards. Writers like Joan Cortada were of the opinion that “Cataláns have succeeded in developing a strong sense of resolution and constancy over the centuries. Another feature of their character was the fact that they were a hardworking people”. (More than a hint there of his opinion regarding the majority of Spaniards!) By the last third of the 19th century the Catalán bourgeoisie and industrialists realised that they could make little headway in trying to influence the Spanish state. As Pierre Vilar observed in 1980: It is only because, in its acquisition of the Spanish market, the Cataln industrial bourgeoisie did not succeed either in securing the state apparatus or identifying its interests with those of the
whole of Spain, in influential opinion, that Catalonia, this little “fatherland”, finally became the “national” focal point. In 1898 Spain lost its possessions in Cuba and the Philippines, which resulted in a crisis of confidence in Spain as a whole and which gave an impetus to political Catalanism. The “Lliga Regionalista de Catalunya” was founded in 1901, and six years later entered into a coalition with other groups ranging from Carlists to Federalists, forming the “Solidaritat Catalana”. With a programme based on Enric Prat de la Riba’s manifesto of 1906, “La nacionalitat catalane”, it gained control of the Generalitat. At the beginning of the 20th century the four Catalan provinces joined together in the “Commonwealth of Cataluña” which, in1913, received limited autonomy from the Madrid government. Hopes of more extensive autonomy in 1919 were dashed, however, leading to the establishment
of radical groups like Acció Catalana and Estat Catalana, which were at some considerable remove from the more moderate Lliga. In 1925 Miguel Primo de Rivera (1870-1930) who ruled in Spain from 1923 to 1930 as virtual dictator under the weak Alfonso XIII suppressed both the Commonwealth and Generalitat. In 1919 this Andalusian aristocrat had been appointed Captain General of Valencia, and in 1922 was active in Barcelona suppressing the unrest which was bubbling to the surface. The following year he staged his coup d’état, dissolved the Cortes, and suspended the constitution. As a result of his activity in Cataluña, the “Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya” was formed from Estat Catalana and other republican groups. This left wing coalition won a sweeping victory in municipal elections in 1931, and following the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in the same year on the abdication of

Alfonso, declared Cataluña to be an independent republic. Under the leadership of Francesc Macià a compromise was reached with the republican government in Madrid. In September, 1932, Cataluña became an autonomous state within Spain with the historic name the “Generalitat de Catalunya.” The accord between the two republics lasted only two years, and in 1934 the Generalitat, under the leadership of Lluís Companys, broke with the central government and demanded further autonomy. Two years later the Spanish Civil War broke out. Cataluña sided with the Republican government in Madrid, and thus once again found itself on the losing side. Lluís Companys declared Cataluña to be independent, but it was an empty gesture. The Nationalists under General Franco did not look kindly on the region and adopted a hostile policy towards it. Once again the Catalan language and culture faced repressive measures. Companys and thousands of other Republicans sought refuge in France, but after the fall of that country in 1940, the Germans captured him and handed him back to their old ally General Franco. He was tortured and shot by the Guardia Civil in a ditch at Montjuïc in Barcelona. His last words as the shots rang out were “¡Per Catalunya!” With the death of General Franco in 1975 and the accession of King Juan Carlos I, the movement for autonomy regained impetus. The death of Alfonso XIII in 1941 had resulted in his son Don Juan, Conde de Barcelona, becoming rightful heir to the throne. The Carlist line had become extinct in 1936 with the death of the Duque de San Jaime in Vienna, and whilst some Carlists still maintained an allegiance to Francis Xavier of Bourbon-Parma, the majority recognised that the direct line was at an end. The Conde de Barcelona now received general acceptance. Don Juan, however, was a prominent critic of General Franco and as a result in July, 1969, the Caudillo named Juan Carlos, Prince of Asturias, Don Juan’s son, as his heir. Don Juan accepted this agreement. The new king proved himself to be the model of a democratic constitutional monarch. During the Franco regime, a Catalán

He returned to Spain in 1977 with the famous words: “¡Ciutadans de Catalunya, ja sóc aquí!” ( “Citizens of Catalonia, I am here at last!”), and in September of that year, with the King’s approval, limited autonomy was once again granted to the region. This was followed in 1979 with the establishment of the Autonomous Community of Cataluña. The following year Jordi Pujol, from the Convergéncia Democràtica de Catalunya, a conservative nationalist pparty, was elected President and remained in office for 23 years. In 2006 Cataluña was granted “Nation” status by the government in Madrid, but four years later in 2010 Spain’s Constitutional Court ruled that whilst the Catalán people constituted a “nationality”, Cataluña itself was not a “nation”. Despite this, the pro-

independence parties (Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya; Unío Democràtica de Catalunya; Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya; Solidaritat Catalana) obtained 50.03% in the 2010 election. There is, however, a considerable divergence of opinion within these parties, none of whom likes to

Having said that, an opinion poll in the same year showed that some 15% of the Partido Popular voters in Cataluña also supported the region’s independence. The 2006 Statute of Autonomy (which, as we have seen, was later negated by the court) was opposed by both the right wing Partido Popular and the left wing Esquerra Repuiblicana de Catalunya; the former considered it as going too far, the latter as not going far enough. The euro-zone debt crisis now raised its ugly head. Put briefly, it is a multi-year debt crisis that has been taking place in the European Union since the end of 2009. Spain, like Greece, Portugal, Cyprus and Ireland, found themselves unable to repay or refinance their government debt or to bail out overindebted banks. The detailed causes of the debt crisis varied, and are
beyond the remit of this article. Many Cataláns felt themselves frustrated at what they saw as central government financial mismanagement, whilst they were contributing so much to the Spanish economy. On September 11th, 2012, between 600,000 (government figures) and 2 million (organisers’ figures) took part in a mass meeting in Barcelona calling for independence from Spain. In September and October a number of local municipalities declared independence. On September 11th the following year, the “Catalán Way” took place, consisting of a human chain 480 kilometres in length, calling for independence. Accordingly, in 2013 the Generalitat passed a measure calling for a referendum on independence from Spain. The independence referendum planned to take place in Scotland in 2014 galvanised such a call. Artur Mas, leader of the “Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya” party, called for a non-binding referendum to be held on November 9th, 2014. The Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, challenged this call, and the Constitutional Court considered the legality of such a vote. Mas went ahead on the grounds that he was merely calling for an informal poll of Catalán opinion. The result was that with more than one third of registered voters taking part, over 80% expressed a desire for independence. The Madrid government remained adamant. Mas formed the “Junts pel Si” (Together for Yes) alliance, and called regional elections in September 2015. The alliance won 62 of the 135 seats in the Generalitat, and was joined by the Popular Unity (anti-austerity) party with 10 votes. On November 9th, 2015,
the Generalitat narrowly approved a measure seeking to implement a “peaceful disconnection from the Spanish State”. Rajoy reiterated that such a move would be illegal. The Popular Unity party now turned on Arturo Mas, and removed their support. Negotiations between the various parties resulted and with hours to go before a further election had to be called, on January 9th, 2016, a compromise was reached. The Mayor of Girona, Carles Puigdemont, became Catalán President. In March the following year Mas was found guilty of Contempt for the Spanish Constitution and barred from holding public office for two years. In defiance of such an example, Puigdemont announced in June 2017 that Cataluña would hold a binding referendum on independence on October 1st, 2017. As the date approached the National Police and Guardia Civil seized nearly ten million ballot papers from a warehouse in Barcelona, and arrested over a dozen election officials. The resulting protests on the streets caused the central government in Madrid to increase its control over
the local police force, the “Mossos d’Esquadra” (“Squad Lads”), which largely replaces the Guardia Civil of other regions of Spain. (The cost of maintaining the “Mossos d’Esquadra” is said to be to be approximately 720 million Euros, which is paid for by the Spanish government.) The vote was held, but was marred by widespread violence, mainly occasioned by the police forces, the exception being the Mossos d’Esquadra, which stood largely aloof. Election officials, however, stated that the turnout was around 42%, with 90% of those voting favouring independence. Given the chaos, these figures have to be regarded at best as approximations. Puigdemont, however, stated “On this day of hope and suffering, Calaluña’s citizens have earned the right to have an independent state in the form of a republic.” Rajoy called the referendum “a mockery” of democracy. King Felipe VI made a public broadcast calling for national unity. At the time of writing the outcome is unclear. Given that history has a habit of repeating itself, it may be unclear for some time to come.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE PLASTIC SURGERY AS YOUR SPECIALISM? During my training in Cologne I naturally followed the rotation through all kinds of medical disciplines and became fascinated by plastic surgery. In 2010, I started my surgical career as a resident in general surgery and qualified as a doctor in emergency medicine. After completing my doctoral thesis in the field of experimental pharmacology in 2012, I got the rare chance to take up a residency in plastic surgery at the renowned CologneMerheim University clinic that is very well known for its department of plastic, aesthetic, reconstructive and hand surgery. It is also Germany’s second largest centre for treating burns. While I was at this clinic, I gained profound knowledge of
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO WORKING AT OCEAN CLINIC? I started at Ocean Clinic in 2016 as part of finishing my residency training. I had met Dr. Kaye five years earlier at a conference and I really admired his approach to this surgical discipline and his enthusiasm for cutting-edge procedures and keeping a leading position in this community of surgeons worldwide. So, I was very happy to be invited to come back here and work for two weeks out of every month in Marbella. The rest of the month I work with Dr. Timo Spanholtz at the Praxisklinik am Rosengarten in Cologne/Germany. It is thanks to his work there that I am able to bring some new procedures to the Ocean Clinic. DO YOU SEE TRENDS IN PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY? Yes, for sure. I mean recently we have had the butt lift trend. One of my areas of expertise is body contouring and its associated procedures, but one new trend that is definitely on the rise is the demand for penis enhancement and vulva / labia rejuvenation. Both concern areas that people are reluctant to talk about, but we are seeing much more open-mindedness in recent years, especially in my home country. Woman were a bit faster in expressing their wishes for genital rejuvenation, but men are now catching up. WHAT IS THE DEMAND FOR THESE PROCEDURES IN MARBELLA? Well, it looks like it is going to be a big trend here. In Germany we are performing two or three penis enhancement procedures weekly and Ocean Clinic is currently the only Plastic Surgery Clinic in Marbella to offer this operation. I am guessing we will have a similar or even stronger demand for intimate surgery for women. There are so many women who suffer emotionally and physically from irregular or hypertrophied labia, sometimes caused by sports such as horse riding and cycling, or by childbirth, and it is a problem that can be quite simply corrected with day surgery. Furthermore, I will be offering other intimate rejuvenation procedures, such as G-spot enhancement or autologous fat transfer to the external labia for age-related atrophy. I’m passionate about helping women to feel happy and confident in their bodies.

I didn’t start my career with the idea of becoming a plastic surgeon; you could say that plastic surgery found me.

COULD YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE PENIS ENHANCEMENT PROCEDURE? There are different techniques, and I prefer to use a technique that is a combination of a penis enlargement to increase the length and a fat transfer to augment the thickness. The penis enlargement is done by cutting the ligament that pins the penis to the pelvic bone. The erectile tissue is attached to the pelvic bone through that ligament and, due to this, between one to four centimetres are hidden inside the body. If you cut this ligament you can pull the penis out and gain length. Of course, we don’t know how many centimetres a man will gain until we perform the procedure. I would add that men can be confident that they won’t lose any erectile function. We also take fat from another part of the body and inject between 20 to 50 millilitres directly under the skin of the penis, around the shaft and this gives about one to two extra centimetres of girth. Sometimes circumcision and enlargement of the glans as well as a rejuvenation of the scrotum are performed in the same session. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO IS NERVOUS ABOUT HAVING THIS PROCEDURE OR ANY OTHER RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY? I always advise people to come to the clinic first. It really helps to take a tour
of the facilities, because then you can see how high our standards of hygiene and technology are, how friendly and relaxed the atmosphere is and you can also ask the staff all the questions they have. It’s also important of course to meet the surgeon who will be performing the operation. Trust is very important with any surgery and plastic surgery is no different. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? We can tell someone we like them or even find them attractive by the use of eye contact. We can tell someone we respect them and are paying attention with eye contact. A lack of eye contact, on the other hand, can reduce our commanding power, convey dislike or lack of attraction and convey disrespect and lack of attention. Of course, other factors also enhance the strength of each of these signals, such as other forms of non-verbal communication, for example posture, facial expressions, tone of voice, sudden

movements or involuntary microexpressions, the topic being discussed and prior knowledge of the person's usual communication style. Eye contact is powerful and should be used to our (ethical) advantage. So here are some fun facts about eye contact that you can and should use in your dayto-day life.
Eye Contact: Fun Fact One
In recently proposing a theory to explain many eye contact research findings, Conty et al. (2016) highlight that a
number of research studies have demonstrated that when people look directly at us, rather than averting their gaze, we become more aware of ourselves. This could at least partially explain why people who lack confidence in what they are saying, either because they are lying or are not entirely convinced of their own words, tend to avoid eye contact with the other person. It could also explain why people who don’t want to see themselves as they truly are, for example because they are in denial about something, will avoid eye contact, for they do not want to see their reflection in the mirror that is you looking at them.

Kret et al. (2015) note that humans quickly grasp emotional signals from eye contact. Of course, an innate ability to read body language keeps us safe from unsavoury types and tells us who comes in peace and which relationships are worth investing time in. In their research they found participants trusted virtual partners in an incentivised trust game when the partner’s pupils were dilated and withheld trust when the partner’s pupils were constricted. When a person’s pupils dilate, it often conveys pleasure and even romantic feelings, so is it this that makes it easier for people to fall for charming men and women? Does their pleasure at having one 'on the hook' lead to a feeling of trust in the 'fish' that’s been hooked? For example, charmers can charm their way into the lives of singletons who convey their feelings of desperation. This is why it is important to look at the whole picture, not just what you want to see, for example “Oh, he fancies me - great!” compared with, “Oh, he fancies me but he’s just mentioned that he is recently coming out of a very messy divorce” or “He finds me attractive which is nice, but he is showering me with way more attention than I would normally expect at this early stage of getting to know anyone” or “He makes me feel attractive and happy but I notice
he has a rope and knife in the boot of his car!”

Khalid et al. (2016) conducted four experiments that all suggested that eye contact from another tends to result in us viewing that person as possessing a more sophisticated mind relative to those who avert their gaze. Of course, that isn’t to say that this evaluation is true, but that it is how we tend to perceive others. Perhaps we attribute such mental and emotional sophistication to eye gazers compared with non-eye gazers because we are innately aware of the selfawareness component of eye contact, as mentioned in my discussion of ‘Eye Contact Fun Fact 1’ above. Maybe our eyes can sometimes trick us into believing something is real when it is not, for example a false sense of trust; maybe other times the mind can trick us into believing something that is real, is not, such as when we question our first impressions about someone, undermining our intuitive nature. The best thing we can do is mentally take a step back and look at the whole picture and that means (a) looking at all of the other person’s non-verbal communication, (b) tallying it with all their verbal communications, (c) taking into account possible influencing environmental factors and (d) attuning to our own motivations to tune-in fully and recognise if we are actively tuningout vital information at our own longterm detriment. Choose wisely. The full picture is always going to be the full picture, regardless of whether it’s what you want. Desperate to make this fourth date of the year into a dating partner? If they’re a sociopath today, they’re going to be a sociopath tomorrow. Dying to strike a business deal with that company? You need to know if they’re a company you want to work with, regardless of the step up you think that brand association will give you. Think your spouse is cheating? Mentally glossing over the red flags isn’t going to resolve anything, but addressing the issues in your marriage and any infidelity that is occurring, might. Take a step back, open your eyes, dissect your thoughts and motivations and charge boldly towards your goals and happiness.

Whether it’s elaborate embellished hair accessories, a fiery red hue or the fashion crowd’s go-to ‘I woke up like this’ hair, this is the place to get all your hair inspo for next season. Being on trend To be honest with you I don’t really give a crap about next year’s trends; what will happen will happen anyway and, really, doesn’t it depend on your mood anyway? But as I am meant to keep all the readers up to date on all future beauty trends fresh from fashion week I guess I will play nicely and pick my favourite hair look from New York to Paris.

Having a blonde moment First, I will tackle hair colour. It looks as though 2018 will be all about Cream Soda. If Gigi Hadid is doing it, you know the rest of the world is about to jump on board. Straddling the line between brunette and blonde (albeit leaning more to the latter), the hue can easily be adapted for both blondes or brunettes - think ‘70s
supermodels like Cheryl Tiegs. It is all about muted tones, it’s not too frosty, not too deep. In my opinion you need to be young to pull this off, otherwise it just looks like you need your highlights doing. These tones can look dull so you must be careful; there is a fine line between fashion and looking like you have left the toner on too long.
Mixing old with new Versace opted for a modern idea of glamour. It’s basically a quality, shiny blow-dry with a little volume and looks clean, simple and polished. Apply Redken Pillow Proof Express Primer Spray €16,88 and Redken Guts €14.25 to wet hair before blow-drying with a GHD Ceramic Brush No 3 €25 round brush, especially at the crown. Then, tuck your hair behind your ears and secure with an ornate hair slide. Done!
Turn up the heat Meet the burnt orange hair colour, a mix of vibrant red and orange tones. These tones happen to be my favourites. As much as I love this look, it does remind me of 1980s students who decided to streak their own hair. To pull off a colour like this you need to have a warm skin tone - put that on anyone with a pink undertone and they will look like they have liver failure. This is also a very high maintenance look. To keep it vibrant you need to not wash your hair and avoid all UV light, so basically turn into a dirty vampire. When this colour washes out you’re left with a faded gold base, so it will take constant application of colour washes (which are non-damaging, pure pigment, but damn messy) to keep it looking fab. If you try to do this at home I can guarantee it will ruin your grouting, white towels and all pillow cases. Be warned, these colours bleed. A silver lining Silver is apparently the new platinum. I must say there are a lot of people walking around Marbella looking like they have had a good scare. This isn’t a look for the faint hearted and needs a full face of make-up at all times. You cannot trot around Asda with your grey hair scraped up and no make=up, it just won’t be a good look, I can promise you that. I prefer Kim K with this silver hue to that awful yellow blonde she sported last year. It is a cooler shade which makes it look cleaner. Take note of how much make-up she is wearing (even by Kim standards!) She has much more colour on her face to warm her, so she doesn’t look like a corpse. Guaranteed a third of her hair will have snapped off and, when she washes it, it will feel like chewing gum. She will also be using Olaplex by the bucket load.
The blunt of it The bob is back – well I didn’t realise it had gone in the first place! It does always make me laugh when they try to bring back the bob. It is the fundamental of hairdressing, the first thing you are taught. There are so many variations, meaning it can suit anyone from a six-year-old to an 80-year-old. The ‘blunt’ bob seems to be the front runner for 2018, a style that reads clean, fresh, and healthylooking. For women with finer hair types, this cut is especially refreshing as you don’t have to worry about thinning it out with layers.
All All wrapped wrapped up up It was French Riviera with a 40s moment at Alice Temperley. Stunning, absolutely stunning. A headpiece scarf paired with sunglasses and a strong lip is the epitome of glamour. A great scarf can hide a multitude of sins and make bad hair days a non-issue, from not bothering to brush your hair, to hiding roots that Lady Gaga would be proud of. Friends of mine who are having to endure chemo I always advise to invest in beautiful headscarves and forget wigs. If they really want to that’s fine, but I think they can look a little tranny, whereas a headscarf has the opposite effect.
Au naturale Air-dried waves and curls were everywhere during the S/S 18 fashion weeks. This is the perfect look for those of you who can’t be arsed - not that I think we should be encouraging people to be lazy. Valentino’s take on this natural hair look was to emphasise the hair texture. Create a messy middle part, apply Redken No Blow Dry cream €18.40 when the hair is damp. Then use a curling iron to create an easy, natural wave and finish with Redken Forceful 23 €14.25 to smooth hair line flyaways.
Crowning glory Dolce & Gabbana sent the ultimate hair accessory down their runway - the crown. If they end up on the high street prepare yourself for so much ammunition to rip people apart on a night out. Buying one of these should come with a warning label: “wearing this may lead to public abuse, name calling and possible stone throwing”.

Seeming like perhaps the last place on earth you might expect to find clowns performing in the street, the smiles on he faces of children in the middle of a war zone are hard to ignore.
But like light and dark, war and peace, one cannot exist without the other. It is for this reason that we should be thankful for the dark times. Not only do they make us stronger, more understanding, more humble and kinder but they open the doors for incredible creativity and we should be thankful for the bad, without which we would not be able to enjoy the good.
When we listen to music a lot of the songs are about heartbreak or other traumatic experiences, evidence that suffering of some kind and creative growth go hand in hand. They are not however mutually exclusive; in fact, like painfully unrequited love, it’s a one-way relationship - adversity is not necessary for creativity but creativity can help during times of adversity.

O
ne of the most outstanding attributes of the 570S and GT models in general is how the engineers have managed to remove most of the road borne NVH from the cabin. Excessive tyre noise is intrusive, wearing over distance and causes you to raise your voice when have a conversation and increase the volume of the sound system just to hear music and speech clearly. Road borne NVH is thus an unwelcome guest. The 570GT may be the quietest of the pack in this regard, but the ostensibly sportier S model runs it close, and even in Spider form when you have the wind in your hair there is still very little in the way of tyre noise at any speed. What you do hear more of when driving al fresco however, is the fabulous engine and exhaust note, which has been finely tuned to be an aural grin inducer. Throw a twisty road with changes of elevation at the 570S and its dialogue with the driver rises to the even greater heights. My eulogy over the 675LT Spider last year centred around the fact that, unlike its steel and aluminium rivals, the McLaren’s carbon-fibre central tub does not give away one iota of torsional rigidity to its coupe sister. This of course means that spring and damper rates do not have to be compromised to accommodate bodyshell flex as on rival machinery, so the McLaren 675LT Spider is every bit as good in the bends as its fixed head sister. The same is true of the 570S, with its new Monocell II carbon-fibre tub whose lower and thinner side sills make entry and exit much easier. Importantly, I much prefer this model’s conventional non-active double wishbone suspension for its more honest and transparent feedback. And it is not just feedback alone that helps the Spider’s hydraulic steering excel as a driver-car interface. It is also top of its game in weight, ratio and consistency, to the point where you literally don’t notice its presence. If anything, you feel directly connected to the front tyres in a way that so many contemporary cars with electric power steering simply fail to be.

Importantly, the steering ratio that provides the pointy front end is perfectly matched with the rear axle so that while response is instant there is also no sense of snappiness as the back end as it follows the front into a bend. The low polar moment of inertia of this mid-engine car no doubt helps the car come off the straight ahead, but it is pretty obvious from the cars reactions at the first bend you encounter that McLaren’s chassis engineers also have the geometric and kinematic suspension puzzles nailed down tight.
Like its Coupe sister, the 570S Spider offers up a more authentic road feel, and despite its steel springs and conventional damping it manages to maintain most of the ride comfort of the more expensive Super Series cars.
As on the 570S Coupe and its more touring biased GT counterpart, I don’t miss the active suspension of the 650S or for that matter the new 720S flagship. As good as these systems are at negating body roll and keeping any manner of road surface in check, I always felt a slight disconnect from the road, a thin technological veil separating the driver from the proceedings at the most intimate level.
In fact, I was slightly taken aback to find that the ballistic new 720S actually rides more firmly and has substantially more road noise than the 570S. Thus, while it is the slower car on track and the autobahn, the substantially cheaper and simpler Sports Series machine is actually the better car for daily road use in terms of refinement, and subjective driver enjoyment at sensible speeds.
“Our aim was to achieve a ride handling compromise which provided plenty of steering feel and feedback on the texture of the road without throwing occupants around,” explained Geoff Goose, chief engineer for McLaren’s Sport Series.

At insensible speeds the 570S Spider rises to the challenge, reaching into its deep well of talent as you up the pace and the road becomes more challenging. From my experience with the 570S Coupe at Portimao, a track I know intimately, that well is both deep and broad, and most drivers will chicken out long before the car. And those who are able to exploit its limits will come away with a big grin. The 570S has no limit handling vices to speak of, and the fact that its smaller tyres and simpler suspension provide less outright mechanical grip than the 650S and 720S allows a good driver to have more fun at lower velocities. Thus, this Sport Series Spider is the less intimidating car to explore the bald limit in. Lowering the roof sheds another layer of isolation from the environment and turns the 570S Spider into an even more engaging driving partner. This newly designed folding roof is a quantum leap ahead of its predecessors in aesthetic terms. As noted previously the whole folding mechanism weighs just 46kg including the carbon-fibre roof panels, with the 15 second opening and closing operation achievable on the fly at up to 40km/h. The rear glass panel can be retracted with the roof up for better cabin ventilation, or used as a wind deflector when you are driving al fresco. You certainly notice a distinct reduction of buffeting when the rear glass is raised between the sleek and wellproportioned flying buttresses behind your head. Power. Now here’s the thing. If they did not know a McLaren 650S or 720S existed, most experienced drivers would come away thinking the 570S was a blindingly fast supercar. Which it is. The Spider hits 100km/h in just 3.2 sec on its way to a Vmax of 328km.h or 204mph, so it is one properly rapid, bona fide supercar. All its rivals such as the Audi R8 Plus Spyder, Lamborghini Huracan Spyder and Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet have more power. But they are also significantly heavier. At 1,359kg, the 570S Spider weighs just 46kg worth of electric roof more than the Coupe. That is between a significant 253 to 311kg lighter than its rivals, or the equivalent of three to four passengers. This means the twin-turbocharged V8 that powers the McLaren does not need the extra 40hp produced by its high revving V10-powered rivals, while it is only 20hp down on the Porsche, which is the heaviest car of this group.

Low weight means the McLaren accelerates, brakes and changes direction better, potentially needing less effort to do so since its turbocharged motor produces more torque. This in itself promotes better in-gear flexibility and fuel efficiency. The big numbers from the 3,799cc twinturbo flat-plane crank V8 are 570hp at 7,500rpm, with 600Nm of torque from 5,000 and 6,500rpm. Driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch paddle shift gearbox, performance is plain rapid and smooth with it. When you want to slow down, the big carbon-ceramic brakes, clamped by six and four-pot callipers front and rear respectively, perform like the trap wire on an aircraft carrier deck, with a good measure of feel and feedback. Rapid is probably an understatement when you describe just how fast the 570S

Spider is both on public roads and on track. However, there are few cars that feel so well balanced overall in terms of power and the chassis’ ability to deftly introduce it to the tarmac. e are already dedicated fans of the Vovem Asador in Nueva Andalucía, so were obviously keen as mustard to test drive the team’s other establishment in Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo. Since its opening in June it has become a popular venue for discerning carnivores, with its range of top quality steaks and meat. The location could scarcely be better, as Vovem’s Marbella branch stands on Avenida de Ahumada, directly opposite the Puerto Deportivo which, with its lovely terrace, makes it the perfect venue for enjoying a cocktail or two as the sun sets over the Mediterranean.

Offering diners a warm welcome without overwhelming them is a skill that many restaurants would do well to master – even here on the Coast, where service is generally of the highest standard – but the Vovem team has this down pat. Chef Enzo and his team offered us the benefit of their knowledge without overcomplicating the process of ordering our food.
Every dish that we tasted was a real declaration of intent from an establishment dedicated to serving the best meat on the Coast: the Wagyu Black Pudding Cannelloni with Oporto Gelatine and Caramel tasted as spectacular as it sounded (consider this a SOCIETY favourite), while we also adored the Suckling Pig with Homemade Sweet Potato Sauce. If you aren’t quite so carnivorous and plan to visit Vovem with friends, don’t panic – there are some dishes that will suit you. We can wholeheartedly recommend the Avocado Cannelloni filled with Prawns and Carabineros, which is presented in a way that makes it look like a leaf – not at all what you

TO MAKE IT EASIER HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVOURITE RECIPES:
-Homemade Coconut Yogurt INGREDIENTS 2 Cups (120 grams) fresh coconut meat. ½ Cup (60 grams) cashews, soaked. 1 capsule probiotics. Water to blend, if needed.

METHOD Blend coconut meat, cashews and water until smooth. Add probiotic and blend until just combined. Place in a bowl (covered by a muslin cloth), in a dehydrator at 105° Fahrenheit, for eight to 10 hours or, if you don’t have a dehydrator, keep in a warm place for eight to 10 hours or overnight. The yogurt needs to be in a warm place, but with a good airflow. Once fermented, stir well. The yogurt will develop a crust, which is still edible. You can scrape it off if you choose, but it does stir in well. When your yogurt is ready, you can flavour it with anything you want. I love using maple syrup and vanilla! Add and stir in.
Almond Milk INGREDIENTS 1 part pre-soaked almonds. 2 parts water (I like my almond milk milky, you can use more water if you like). 1 tsp. of agave. 1 pinch of salt (Himalayan). 1 tsp. of coconut oil. Half a vanilla pod (the leftover stalk I put in a jar of porridge oats or anything else that might benefit from the delicious smell). METHOD Blend nuts and water in a blender until you start getting a milky texture. Use a sieve to separate the pulp from the milk. Put the milk back in the blender and add agave, salt, vanilla and coconut oil and give it another whizz.

I like using a glass jar or bottle to store the milk, as it’s better than plastic and keeps for longer in the fridge. What do you do with the pulp? I dehydrate mine to make almond flour, use in a cake or make little chocolate balls covered in sesame seeds! You can make so many different milks, so don’t limit yourself to almonds. There is hazelnut, sunflower and Brazil nut to name just a few of my favourites.

The Indian summer retreats of members of the British Raj make ideal holiday destinations for 21st century Europeans.
O
ne of the many charms of Paul Scott’s novel “Staying On” and its compelling dramatisation for television with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, was its backdrop of an Indian hill station as their choice of place to retire. Of course, the couple has lived through the last days of British India, but their refusal to leave sums up many people’s love affair with the country. More recently, the Channel 4 series, “Indian Summers”, set in Shimla, a hill station in the foothills of the Himalayas, showed the extraordinary lifestyle of the British living there in the 1930s. India’s hill stations are holiday destinations that offer an incredible wealth of different landscapes and cultures as they are spread around a variety of Indian regions, from the Himalayas in the north to Kerala in the south.
Hill Station History During the British Raj, the officers, officials and their families were desperate to escape the summer heat of the plains. So they looked to the Himalayas in the north and the Nilgiri Hills in the south, and created hill stations that were versions of England. These hill stations are usually at altitudes of 1,000 to 2,500 metres (3,500 to 7.,500 feet) above sea level, and many of them also provided excellent sanatorium facilities because of their clean air. These hill stations remain popular holiday destinations, but some Westerners are looking at them as retirement resorts. There are plenty to choose from: you just need to decide whether you prefer the lush, tropical south, or the mountainous north where every view is of the majestic Himalayas.

Uttarakhand The state of Uttarakhand has been compared to Switzerland; it is also called “The Land of the Gods” and is a centre of pilgrimage and there are numerous Hindu Temples. Bordered by the snow-peaked Himalayas, you can see why it has an Alpine feel. This increasingly prosperous state is largely agricultural and towns are surrounded by basmati rice fields and orchards of apples, oranges, pears and peaches. With its mountain landscapes and green pastures, it’s no wonder that it is home to several of India’s most famously scenic hill stations. The sacred river Ganges flows through Rishikesh, which is also known as “The World Capital of Yoga” and it was here that The Beatles met the Maharishi. The rather lovely, luxury Ananda-in-theHimalayas spa and retreat is the perfect destination for a special treat holiday. The British thought of Mussoorie as a ‘fairyland town’ and it is considered one of the most beautiful hill stations. Nainital, which is built around a pear-shaped lake, was a popular health resort with British Raj soldiers and officials, and now it is popular with contemporary British visitors.

Himachal Pradesh Dalhousie, in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh that is renowned for its beauty, is named after Lord Dalhousie, a one-time British Governor-General in India. The summer retreat is built on five hills and renowned for its healing waters. The town is noted for its Scottish and Victorian architecture, plus its mesmerising scenery. The city of Shimla is another famously British retreat, and in 1864 it was declared ‘the summer capital of British India’. It is also called “Queen of the Hills” and you can ski on the slopes around Shimla, which is not an activity you normally associate with India.
The Nilgiri Mountains The Nilgiri Mountains, also called ‘The Blue Mountains, cross the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala states in southern India. They are part of the extensive Western Ghats range that forms the Deccan plateau. The area is famed for several hill stations, which are distinctly different to those in the north; you are unlikely to see much snow here.

Ootacamund, or Ooty, was a favourite with the British officials based in Madras. Its mountains, lakes, flower-filled fields and an almost constant, comfortable temperature all year round, make it an attractive resort to relax in. Thekkady in ‘God’s Own Country’ of Kerala, is India’s largest wildlife sanctuary. Hill station package holidays are one way to explore this beautiful area with its coastal and inland waters as well as its excellent spas that specialise in Ayurvedic treatments.

Maharashtra in the Middle Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra and although it is the most densely populated state in India, it has some stunning hill stations. The visitor driving from Mumbai to Pune, which is an experience worth the hire of an experienced local driver, will pass through Lonavla and Khandala. These two towns are only three kilometres apart in the Western Ghats, and there are times when visitors standing on the terrace of Dukes Retreat may find that they are standing above the clouds. Lonavla is conveniently located for transport and it is one of the prime locations for a luxury retirement resort that is rather better equipped than the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in its popular films that have done so much to make India an even more popular place to visit for an exotic holiday.

Keep your small dogs close!
I
thought I would share a personal experience with you this time, although I’m pretty sure that any owner of larger dogs has encountered this problem, and that is the perception that small dogs are somehow harmless and should therefore be allowed to roam freely and walk off the leash. I was out on a walk with my dog Luna, she’s a Pit cross, when a Yorkshire terrier jumped from the front seat of a parked car into the back seat and straight out the open door and into the road. He then ran down the road to meet us with his owners running behind him, screaming for him to come back. I knew this was going to happen about 30 seconds before it did, because I’d spotted the Yorkie on the front seat when we walked past the parked car and I had also seen that the back door was open. So, when I head the screaming, I knew exactly what was going on, but I stayed calm. Luna did not know anything until the Yorkie had its nose in her butt. She turned around and I let them meet.

I didn’t have a choice at this point, because I didn’t want the Yorkie to run back into the road. After a five second meet with Luna, a boy ran up with his mother, who was still screaming behind him. He picked up the Yorkie and then stroked Luna. He said sorry and walked back to the car. Almost exactly the same thing happened to me the previous day as well. Someone was taking rubbish out to the bin and allowed their small dog to follow them into the road. The dog had
no leash and could have taken off in any direction. It is especially problematic if you are walking with a larger dog on a leash who doesn’t appreciate having another dog run at them. Owners of larger dogs are aware that if anything happens to a small dog when it runs up a bigger dog, then it is the big dog that will be blamed. Owning a small dog is just as much responsibility as owning a big dog. Please don’t let your dog run up to dogs in the road, or anywhere – it isn’t fair to those owners walking with their dogs on a leash.

Q: We’ve got a 6-month old puppy and two older dogs. He just doesn’t seem to understand how to be with them.
A: Some puppies can have trouble reading the signals from other dogs and just don’t know when to back away. They get themselves into trouble with the other dogs when just left to their own devices, so I recommend that first of all, you as owner, really establish yourself as pack leader. Once all the dogs feel you are in full control, they will all feel calmer. Second, always walk a puppy like this on the leash and if he gets over excited in the house, like when visitors come round, put a leash on him and make him sit. This can be more effective than only verbal commands with quite a number of dogs. And at home, it is better to crate them, because that will stop bad habits like chewing and prevent toileting where they shouldn’t. The leash will allow you to communicate calmly and efficiently when you’re out and the crate will keep your dog safe and teach them to be calm at home.

Q: My Pit rescue dog goes into the ‘red zone’ when she sees another dog, so it is impossible to have other dogs anywhere near her. I had a trainer, but he used a prong collar, which I don’t like. He refuses to train her any more unless I accept the prong collar. What do you think of this approach? A: It’s not about the tool in my opinion but you have to be comfortable with the tool as the owner. I use prong collars, slip leashes and ecollars, and I have learnt how to use them from much more experienced trainers. Twenty-one year old Daniella Ford Ambrose was crowned Miss Glamour 2017 during the 15th anniversary of the competition held at the John Mackintosh Hall on Friday 13th October. Daniella, who also won the awards of Miss Friendship and Miss Cover Girl, was crowned by Miss Glamour 2016, Keisha Ballester. Zyra Barcio was elected 1st Princess whilst Julia Aguilera was awarded 2nd Princess and also won Miss Best Effort and Miss Elegant. Other awards presented by Dream Girl of the Year 2017, Gisella Ignacio, presented on the night were Miss Vogue and Miss Catwalk, both won by Paula Duran. The difficult choice was put in the hands of the five judges: Miss Gibraltar 1995 Monique Perera, Miss Gibraltar 2012 Jessica Baldachino-Dalmedo, Miss Gibraltar 2015 Hannah Bado, Miss Glamour 1st Princess and model Annie Jackson, and local personality Christian Santos. Once again Glamour Creations achieved a full house; thrilled spectators watched the show that was as always a masterpiece of production. The contestants presented themselves in various different catwalk routines: Opening, Presentation, Miss Vogue, Miss Catwalk and Miss Elegant.

Princess Fashion. The audience was also treated to a blast from the past with an eveningwear parade by some of the past Miss Glamour winners. Glamour Creations has entered its 15th successful year in the show industry and Miss Glamour 2017 was their 39th production, making them the most experienced pageant organisers in Gibraltar by a long shot. All the shows to date are non-governmental and non-profit events with the proceeds benefiting local charities. Glamour Creations has already raised thousands of pounds in support of various charities such as BabySTEPPs Gibraltar, The Guardian Angel Foundation, Childline Gibraltar, Gibraltar Community Association, Gibraltar Breast Cancer Support, RICC Gibraltar, GBC Open Day, Gibraltar Alzheimer’s & Dementia Society, Corazon y Vida, Little Smiles Charity and Diabetes Gibraltar. Miss Glamour 2017 was in aid of Action4Schools Sierra Leone. They are now in preparation for Dream Girl of the Year 2018, which will be taking place on Friday 16th March at the John Mackintosh Hall and is aimed at girls aged 10-15. OCEAN CLINIC MARBELLA WINS PLASTIC SURGERY AWARD FOR INNOVATION Ocean Clinic Marbella has been named a winner in the Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Awards for the second year running. The clinic clinched the title of “Best Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Clinic – Spain” in the awards ceremony organised by Global Health and Pharma magazine. Last month, Es Arte gallery in San Pedro hosted the awards ceremony for its first children’s painting contest. Around 50 young people were asked to create works inspired by the paintings of Eugenio Pardini, the Italian artist currently being exhibited at Es Arte. The children responded to his vibrant use of colour and compositions with gusto and really captured the soul of this artist in their own way. The jury, consisting of Augusto de Marsanich, Juan García Montero and Marifé Núñez awarded the prizes and Es Arte gallery also thanked Oksana Kuzmenko for her hard work in organising this event. Local businesses that contributed to the contest included Papelería Los Arcos, Fernando Moreno and framers Don Marco.
BRITISH INVESTIGATOR ELECTED PRESIDENT OF GLOBAL ASSOCIATION Conflict International CEO Mike LaCorte has been elected as the President of the World Association of Detectives at their 92nd annual conference in New Delhi, India.
