PUBLISHER’S LETTER

S

ummer is now in full swing and it’s ‘crazy season’ here on the coast! As the temperatures begin to soar, the beaches and bars are filling up and tourists and locals alike are lining the pools and flocking to the sea to cool down and unwind. It’s been a busy month for us here at SOCIETY – with bars, clubs and new restaurants opening up right left and centre, all holding lavish opening parties but we’ve been lucky enough to find some great spots to relax and chill out.

baring their flesh in their two-piece numbers and have brought you our favourite bikini babes. If the photos of the stunning supermodels’ derrieres have had the same effect on you ladies as they have on the girls in the office, and the idea of slipping into a bikini is filling you with dread - then help is at hand! We’ve enlisted Lisa Marie Robinson, the hottest trainer and fitness coach on the coast, to get us all into shape and she’ll be offering tips, advice and exercises to get the ultimate bikini bodies!

We headed over to the fantastic spa at Healthouse to try out their new ‘Sunset package’ for massages and pampering and a spot of sunset yoga! (well, the girls did the yoga whilst I enjoyed a massage and fruit cocktail!) It’s a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy summer season on the coast and to wind down and take in the beauty of this gorgeous stretch of beach at sunset. We also visited the brand new, Thai Mitica spa – our latest favourite hidden gem! Located in the heart of Nueva Andalucia’s golf valley, this delightful spa offers traditional Thai and oil massages as well as boasting a sauna, pool and superb sundeck, all overlooking the stunning valley.

We’re also welcoming SisKo AKt, the stylish trendsetting sisters who have got all of this season’s fashion looks on lockdown. From runway to high street, they’ll talk us through the hottest trends as well as offering basic fashion and shopping rules and advice.

After an afternoon of intense relaxation, herbal teas and Thai hospitality, we set off for the next best thing to come out of the land of smiles - a delicious taste of Thailand at Tuk-Tuk in Aloha, where we tucked into some spicy stir-fries, soups and curries – and the girls swore by their fantastic sushi! We also dined in the celebrated meat restaurant, Vovem – and it did not disappoint! This relatively new restaurant has been packed every night since it opened in the spring and I can see why; if you fancy a steak this is THE PLACE to go! It’s a meatlovers heaven and welcome addition to Nueva Andalucia’s fabulous assortment of international dining hotspots. With all this time spent lounging by pools and at bars and beaches we thought we’d bring you some summer fashion and let’s face it, in this heat clothing is pretty minimal, so we’ve compiled a selection of our favourite bikinis and beachwear from Elle Morgan as well as some fab fashion from Aviator, which involved another fun shoot at the luxury beach club, Trocadero. We’ve also taken a glimpse at some of our favourite celebrities

16

Having learnt these ‘fashion rules’ we thought we might ‘glam up‘ ourselves so we donned our favourite white and gold outfits and set off to Gibraltar for the party of the summer aboard the Sunborn yacht. La Sala opened its first Gibraltarbased bar and restaurant on the superyacht with a bang and guests journeyed from up and down the coast (as well as flying in from overseas) for a night of excellent food, revelry and superb entertainment. With musicians, dancers and acrobats performing a series of mesmerising shows and dinner in the impressive new floating restaurant, La Sala’s famous annual White and Gold Party was its best one yet! Whilst we were cooling down, our speed freak, Ian Kuah was turning the heat up a notch as he took the Porsche GT3 for a spin. As if that wasn’t enough of a thrill, he also took the Jet Express private jet for a whirl and he enjoyed it so much that we thought we might not see him return! He did (thank God!) because the jet is the ultimate travel option for short haul flights and I’m sure a shopping trip to Marrakech is on the cards fairly soon. Packed with all the usual articles, news and reviews – plus our brand new fashion and fitness features, this super summery issue is brimming with Marbella fabulousness – fast cars, cool bars, a private jet and a bevvy of bikini-clad babes! Seriously… What more can you ask for! I hope you enjoy reading this issue of SOCIETY magazine as much as we loved publishing it! I’m off now to wind down now with a beer on the beach! Until next time… Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Jessie J is bold, fearless and has one of the strongest work ethics in showbiz, we take a closer look at her impressive career to date

Jessie J

The London girl TAKING ON the world By Natalie Rose Kern

S

till riding high after last summer’s huge hit single Bang Bang, Jessie J’s hectic world tour hits the UK this month, and SOCIETY magazine finds out why the London girl is enjoying life on the road… Jessica Ellen Cornish or Jessie J (as she’s more commonly known) is the enigmatic singer/songwriter and quirky pop princess whose single ‘Price Tag’ is one of the most catchy tunes ever written – and the reason that no one can ever say “it’s not about the money” in conversation without someone bursting into song or without hearing “money, money, money” playing over and over in your head for the whole day! Yes, she’s most famous for this fun and catchy hit, but Jessie J’s talents stretch far further than this number 1 single and no matter where she is or what she does, Jessie J stands out. There’s nothing typical about her. Musically, she can just as easily echo Motown soul as well as she can nod to nineties hip-hop. Blessed with an astounding voice and natural knack for a hook, she redefines what’s possible within pop as she upholds its traditions. In other words, Jessie J always remains one-of-a-kind. That’s why she’s quickly become a consummate 21st century superstar and a palpable and powerful pop culture force.

globe. To date, her album sales exceed 3 million and single sales surpass 20 million and counting. Along the way, she received the prestigious BRIT Award for “Critic’s Choice”. In addition, the BBC crowned her with the high honor of Sound of 2011, she received a Grammy Award nomination in 2012 and also acted as the 2012 London Olympic Games Ambassador. Jessie J released her second studio album Alive in September 2013. Jessie co-wrote the album with Claude Kelly, amongst a host of collaborators including Becky G, Brandy Norwood, Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal. The album debuted in the Top 5 on the UK Albums Chart.

In 2011, the world first took notice of the UK-born singer and songwriter in a very big way. Her full-length debut album, Who You Are [LAVA], heralded the songstress’s arrival as a worldwide icon. It debuted Top 15 on the Billboard Top 200, and it generated an astounding six Top 10 smashes on the radio. “Price Tag” [featuring B.o.B] went platinum stateside and was No 1in 18 major territories. Then, “Domino”, her biggest U.S. hit to date, took flight on the charts. The track went on to achieve double-platinum status and become a ubiquitous anthem around the

22

If you want something, you just do it - you know?”

It included two top-five hits including “Wild” and “It’s My Party”. The overall feeling was, however, that this was Jessie’s “difficult second album”. “I don’t think I had enough time,” she says “I was on The Voice and I was very busy during the time when I should have been doing promo. I didn’t have time to work it as hard as I have, you know, on the first album or this album. And now, even doing this album, it’s made me realise how little I did on the second album. Everything’s about timing. You can’t always be on top all the time. But I think it’s about just understanding

that it comes in waves and it’s like a rollercoaster. There’s the ups, there’s the climb and there’s the fall and there’s the loops and there’s jolts. It’s kind of how I see it and I came back fighting, and I’m happy that I did.” In July 2014, the first single from her third album Sweet Talker arrived with a bang— literally. Jessie J teamed up with rising diva Ariana Grande and rap’s reigning queen Nicki Minaj for “Bang Bang”. It became the blockbuster anthem of the summer, combining Jessie J‘s inimitable delivery, Ariana Grande‘s massive range, and Nicki Minaj‘s deft wordplay. As soon as “Bang Bang” was released, the charts exploded. Immediately, the track captured the #1 spot on iTunes Overall Top Songs Chart and it has gone Platinum four times over less than just a year after release. Jessie remembers when she first heard the song. “I heard it and was like: “If I don’t record this, I’m an idiot.” I went in the studio that day and recorded it, sent it to Max Martin with some of my changes and obviously I put my vocal down on it. He phoned me and was like, ‘I want to get Ariana on it’, and I was like, ‘I think this is an amazing idea’. Then Nicki heard it and wanted to jump on it, so in an instant it became obvious that it would be the first single I should release from the new album. The single perfectly set the stage for the October 2014 release of Sweet Talker, which debuted Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and included appearances from De La Soul, 2 Chainz and American violinist Lindsey Stirling and production from the likes of Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Ilya, Diplo, Tricky, The Dream and more. In April the first single from the highlyanticipated sequel to the smash hit and platinum-selling soundtrack, Pitch Perfect and became another huge hit.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

Since the release of Sweet Talker, Jessie has been on the road in Australia, Asia and the USA, as well as Europe. She’ll play both the Wireless Festival and T in the Park in the UK this month, which means she’s been on the move pretty much constantly for the last seven months. But it seems like the relentless touring comes with the territory for the singer. In the last few years she has made the leap from being essentially a very successful UK performer to a full-blown global star, thanks to growing support in the US and Australia. “If you want something, you just do it - you know?” she says. “You get a job, and you get a promotion. This feels like I am getting a promotion. This tour is a bit longer and a bit harder. You learn what you need and what you don’t need.” “I have been doing this for seven years now. It’s what I do.” Since starting touring in January, she has had a couple of chances to spend the odd day off in Los Angeles, where she recorded the album, and her London hometown. But these spells of down time are clearly few and far between. What does she do when she actually does get time to herself? “I catch up on my sleep, see family and friends, go bowling,” she says. “I love being outside - I get to see the random places in the world when I’m touring.” What does the future have in store for Jessie J? She’s got a packed schedule of surprises up her sleeve, but one thing’s for sure – it’s not going to be boring! Image courtesy of Purple PR

Songs of the

SUMMER By Amber O’Shaughnessy

The best songs of the year are always released ahead of the summer. As skin gets darker, drinks get colder and music gets louder, you need the hottest tracks to soundtrack your summer.

TURN ! P IT U

‘Cool’ – Alesso ft. Roy Englishm This track, which samples Kylie Minogue’s ‘Get Outta My Way’, has summer written all over it. A bit more low-key than the Swedish electronic dance artist’s normal material, it has a catchy synth beat and a stunning piano-based melody. A definite sound of the summer.

‘Rumours’ – Pep and Rash “There’s a rumour going ‘round” - that this is going to be a huge song of the season! The duo, who were relatively unknown until the release of this track, have been supported by all the top DJs such as Afrojack, Tiesto, Nicky Romero and Martin Garrix and quite right too – we have this song on repeat.

‘Lean On’ – DJ Snake This has already made a huge impact on the major radio stations of Europe in the pre-summer months and it looks set to stay for summer 2015. After his performance at Aqwa Mist last year, DJ Snake has gone from strength to strength and arguably ‘Lean On’ is the producer at his very best.

‘Summer Jam 2003’ The Underdog Project Not all songs featuring on this summer playlist are new releases. There are those special records that are made popular time and time again as the summer months come round each year and this is most definitely one of them. How can it not feel like summer has arrived when you hear those infamous lyrics “This ain’t nothing but a summer jam. Brown skin and cinnamon tans…”

24

‘Outside’ – Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding Isn’t this musical pairing just a match made in heaven? Calvin has the beats covered while Ellie’s pure, crisp vocals add flesh to the bones. The result? Well yet another hit record that is going to be a staple on your summer playlist this year.

‘The Girl is Mine’ – 99 Souls (Beyonce vs Brandy & Monica) This London house duo puts a fresh spin on a track so nostalgic that you can’t help but move. Beyoncé’s unmistakeably sugary vocals are chopped and changed to make a hit that will be massive this summer.

‘Promesses’ – Tchami ft. Kaleem Taylor French DJ/producer Tchami has a unique house jam – part deep, part tech and this track, which features London boy Kaleem as guest vocalist, is infectious. You won’t be able to resist dancing around whenever you hear this song.

‘Tether’ – Eric Prydz vs Chvchres Ever since the king of dance Eric Prydz released the 2004 track ‘Call on Me’, house music fans the world over look to him for new material to soundtrack their summer each year. This collaborative single shows the Swedish DJ most definitely still has what it takes to delight fans across the continents with his slick beats and deep riffs.

HOT OFF THE S PRES

Us

by David Nicholls Like most people, I first became acquainted with the masterful writing of author, David Nicholls, after devouring One Day, a novel that was released in 2009 and, after receiving widespread critical and popular praise, was adapted into a screenplay, also titled ‘One Day’ and released in August 2011. One Day centres on the characters of Emma and Dexter who meet at Edinburgh University and maintain a friendship for the next twenty years, trying both to bury and re-ignite feelings of romance towards one another at varying points in time. The novel is painfully true to life and it is this feature of the novel, I think, which makes it so appealing to so many people. Needless to say, when I heard Nicholls was releasing another novel, I found the nearest English book store and bought myself a copy. Us has so far been everything I have come to expect from this author…and more. The novel once again focuses on two protagonists and their relationship but this time the events are pitched at a slightly later stage in the lives of the characters, after 25 years of marriage in fact. After years of contented marriage to her husband Douglas, Connie tells him one night that she wants to leave him. These words, said so quickly, bring Douglas’ world crashing down around him. He makes it his mission to win his wife’s heart back, travelling on a ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe along with their teenage son Albie. Needless to say the trip does not go as Douglas expected it to and the reader is faced with all manner of amusing scenarios in which Douglas is grasping and fumbling at any attempt at a joke or kind gesture in the hope of making his wife fall back in love with him. Nicholls has once again created a novel that is as laugh out loud funny as it is a beautiful portrayal of love and Us reflects the husband and wife relationship that you find in all too many places. Jump aboard their journey through Europe and experience the laughter and sadness of Douglas in his quest to salvage his small but precious family. Well done David Nicholls, you have produced another story, which easily rivals the success of One Day. Us is a brilliantly bittersweet novel that will have you gripped ‘till the final page.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Transformation AN ASTOUNDING By Natalie Rose Kern

A

lthough a confident and outgoing young woman, Kara Robertson had always had one major insecurity – her nose. Since childhood she’s shied away from photos and mirrors and if ever she heard voices laughing she automatically assumed that it was about her nose - and had even nicknamed herself Gonzo.

“I hated it,” she tells me “I used to look at photos that caught my profile and was disgusted. It really affected my self-esteem and had given me a huge complex” I’ve come to meet her at work, where she’s the bubbly and cheerful restaurant manager, greeting everyone with a sparkly smile. She’s taken a break to chat with me and sits relaxed, flashing a beaming grin that radiates confidence and exudes self-assurance, and it’s hard to believe that only six months ago she felt so embarrassed about her profile.

“I felt absolute confidence in my surgeon and his team and honestly couldn’t fault anything”

“A lot of my friends have had nose jobs” Kara tells me, “and I’ve heard so many horror stories and I’ve seen so many botched operations that I was really wary of having such a major operation – especially on my face! But Dr Kaye came with so many recommendations and with such high praise from people I knew who’d had surgery with him that I felt quite confident that he would do a good job.”

Kara tells me that her biggest concern was the final result. “I wasn’t at all scared of the operation or the procedures. As soon as I met Dr Kaye he extinguished any fears or reservations that I had because he was so professional and personable. I told him what I didn’t like about my nose and he immediately showed me a series of ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of noses just like mine, and the results were amazing! He explained what he could do for me and talked me through the procedure, which made me feel completely at ease”

30

Kara’s nose looks great to me. I take a peak at it from all angles and, had she not told me, I would never have known that it had undergone any surgery at all. It looks entirely natural and in perfect proportion to her face. I wonder if it looked like that after the operation and ask her how much it hurt. “Not one bit!” She exclaims, like she’s still in shock about it. “From the moment that I came ‘round from surgery

“It was fantastic! The room was lovely; bright, clean and restful, and there was even a take-away menu from a top Marbella restaurant so that I could order the food of my choice right to my room – it was just like being in a hotel!”

and had the drip removed, there was no pain whatsoever! I was given pain medication to take home with me, but never needed to take any of it. No bleeding, no pain, the only sign of an operation was the bruising, which soon went down and didn’t hurt at all!” Kara tells me all about her experience at Ocean Clinic and her stay there and is truly gushing when she talks about the nurses and the wonderfully friendly service and treatment she received. “It was fantastic! The room was lovely; bright, clean and restful, and there was even a take-away menu from a top Marbella restaurant so that I could order the food of my choice right to my room – it was just like being in a hotel! The nurses were such lovely ladies, both spoke fluent English, which made everything so much easier and they were so amiable and helpful.

My sister came to stay with me to keep me company overnight and they accommodated her, bringing a spare bed into my room and we were given the best possible attention and care.” It sounds marvellous. I wonder if all operations are this comfortable and indulgent and I find myself already considering surgery just to receive this five-star treatment! “Dr Kaye was by my side immediately when I woke up and I felt completely safe and cared for. He visited me at least four times before I was discharged, dropping in to see my progress and to check that I was at ease and without pain. I’ve had plastic surgery before and I’ve never received such attentive aftercare. I felt absolute confidence in my surgeon and his team and honestly couldn’t fault anything. It was better than I could have imagined and I was thrilled with the results.”

I ask her if she has any regrets or if she was disappointed with anything; “Nothing!” she smiles, “From the moment I met Dr Kaye, all consultations, the operation and the aftercare have all been smooth and hassle-free. I’ve had no complications and it has been a remarkably pleasant experience” She seems happy and so delighted with the results that I’m curious as to whether she’s considering any more surgery. “People worry about plastic surgery, as there’s so much that could go wrong, but choosing Dr Kaye was the best decision I’ve ever made. After my experience at Ocean Clinic, I would definitely go to them again and have more.” Well, her contentment and satisfaction has certainly won me over and who knows, I might just see her there!

he crazy summer season is now in full swing in Marbella, temperatures are soaring, the roads are at a standstill, beaches and pools are filling up and yes, the most stressful element of all – the kids are off school! So I was only too delighted

when I was invited to try out Healthouse’s new Sunset Package comprising of a full body massage, yoga class, fruit cocktail by the pool and access to all of the spa’s facilities.

is assessed by a nutritionist, doctor and various specialists, including a psychologist – as Healthouse believes that emotional wellbeing is as important as physical fitness and she explains that stress is responsible for over 75% of the aging process. Youch! I ponder, it’s no wonder I’m looking so old!

Sanctuary

Hot, fried and frazzled from juggling work, children and having been stuck in traffic for half an hour, I arrive through the gates of Healthouse a sweaty, shiny, panting mess. The spa’s Marketing Manager, Sandra Huerga Kanzler, greets me in the grand reception and talks me through the spa’s purpose, its clientele, aims and ethos, and it soon becomes apparent that this is not your run-of-the-mill health and beauty centre for a spot of pampering, but a place dedicated to improving your long-term health and wellbeing. Healthouse is located on a picturesque stretch of the coast between Estepona and Marbella. It’s the site of the old Las Dunas hotel, a spot that I am only too familiar with, having spent many a family Christmas there over the years. But as Auxi, the Spa Manager, takes me on a guided tour, the hotel is barely recognisable to me and I am blown-away with the transformation.

34

The old hotel’s conference room has been transformed into a 3000m2 health spa, which is a work of art combining modern design with a chic sophistication that offers an ambiance of calm and repose. With soft lighting, pastel colours, stone floors

and walls, the spa boasts a plethora of treatment and relaxation rooms, housing a variety of high tech machines and all the latest technology in weight-loss and rejuvenation. From jet-powered water treatments that get your circulation going and guarantee to minimise water retention to lymphatic drainage suits that Auxi assures me are the most effective treatments in weight loss. As we tour the Spa Auxi talks me through the many treatments and packages on offer and explains that every guest’s programme is tailor-made to suit their personal needs, requirements, goals, health and body type. Upon arrival, each guest

We visit the consultation rooms and meet the nutritionist who describes the many programmes and therapies on offer. Bone density, body fat and water retention are all measured and analysed and all guests are offered diets, exercise programmes, treatments and beauty and health products and supplements to suit their needs for maximum effect.

Auxi shows me to the ladies’ dressing room and hands me a towelling robe, slippers and locker key and leaves me to get change. Ahhhhhh… it’s finally time to unwind and enjoy this beautiful sanctuary. I shuffle out and make my way to the spa area and slip into the shower. For the next hour I enjoy an invigorating circuit between sauna, ice room, pool, steam room and salt room until I feel utterly relaxed and rejuvenated. As I sit in the salt room wondering if it is ridding my body of all free radicals, my masseur, Nicolas, comes to find me, announcing that it is time for my massage. We wander outside, where the sheer beauty of Healthouse’s gardens is simply breathtaking. The grounds are

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

stunning, with immaculately manicured lawns and flowerbeds boasting colourful flowers in full bloom and sunbeds neatly lined around a turquoise pool, all set against the backdrop of the glistening Mediterranean on the horizon. Nicolas has prepared a bed for me, overlooking the sea and I lay myself down and make myself comfortable. He begins an unwinding back massage with rose and lavender therapeutic oils (the smell is divine,) and I begin to feel all of my worries and stresses slipping away, until I’m soon drifting off to the sound of chirping birds and the waves crashing upon the shore until they finally lull me into a gentle slumber. When I come back ‘round, the massage is over and I feel utterly rested. There is a light breeze coming off the sea and as the sun is beginning to set, the gardens are bathed in a golden light. I can hear the sound of water flowing from a cascading waterfall into the swimming pool and the birds are reaching a delightful crescendo and it feels like heaven… A couple of ladies have come to join me on the lawn, along with Antonina, the yoga instructor, and we position our towels facing the sea for a gentle unwinding yoga session. The class is a fabulous wind down for the end of the day, focusing on breathing; exhaling bad energy, stress, frustration and worry and breathing in the positive energy of the universe and all the

beauty of the surrounding nature. We gently move through a series of sequences, poses and sun-salutations, bending and stretching until it is time for the Shavasana and we lie peacefully, until I am asleep one more. Antonina softly wakes me and I thank her for the class as she delivers instructions and advice to the other ladies on how to incorporate yoga into their daily lives and how to take these exercises home with them for long-term benefits. I find a secluded sun lounger on a grassy bank by the sea and a waiter brings me a cocktail of fresh mint and lime and, as the sun begins to set over Africa, I realise with dread that it’s almost time for me to leave and re-join the real world… Healthouse is like stepping into another world entirely; time slows down, nature comes alive and you feel younger, lighter, brighter and stress-free from the moment you arrive. I pack my bags and dress, already feeling like another woman than the frazzled one who arrived here only hours ago, and bid a goodbye to my hosts and the wonderful staff who welcomed me so hospitably. “Come back soon!” they call. They needn’t worry; I’ll be back all right! Is tomorrow too soon? Healthouse-naturhouse.com Urbanización Boladilla Baja, Crta. Marbella-Estepona km163, 500 Tel. +34 951 082 090

We have to thank the gorgeous J.Lo as now it is sexy to have a firm and curvy backside. There are a few key exercises you can do at home to shape and sculpt your derriere, I am going to share a couple of great ones with you now. Before completing any exercises, you should consult your doctor or physician to determine if it is right for your needs. Always ensure your body is warm prior to completing resistancebased exercises. You can walk up and down the stairs or why not take your dog for a brisk walk. If you ever feel dizzy or unwell stop immediately and consult your physician.

THE CLOSE SQUAT Stand with your feet hip width apart, toes facing forward and ideally with a small table or low chair behind you (something that will take your weight). Bend your knees and sit down on the table, keeping your heels on the floor. Then stand back up again; keep looking forward with your back straight and hands across your chest. Remember to breathe comfortably throughout the exercise and try to tense your thigh and buttock muscles as you stand up. Try to complete 1-3 sets of 8-12 repetitions (this will depend on your level of fitness and if you are using extra weight – see below)

Top tip – You really want your knees to be at a 90 degree angle girls!

Want to make it harder? Take hold of a large bottle of water, some hand weights (dumbbells) or a barbell. Only lightly tap the table with your butt and then return to standing.

Nº2

THE WIDE SQUAT

Stand with your feet wider than your hips, and turn your toes out to a 45´degree angle. Bend your knees so that they are inline with your toes and lower than a 90 degree angle and then stand back up again. Make sure your heels stay on the floor, look forward, with your back straight and place your hands across your chest. Remember to breathe comfortably throughout your training and try to tense your thigh and buttock muscles as you stand up. Try to complete 1-3 sets of 8-12 repetitions (this will depend on your level of fitness and if you are using extra weight – see below)

THE ONLY

WAY IS

UP

Daniel Boardman, Senior Hair Technician at Reflections Hair, Nails and Skincare Salon in Marbella. trained under the multi-awardwinning Errol Douglas MBE.

HAIR ME NOW Has someone cranked up the heat or is it just me? To all my fellow sweaty Bettys out there - I feel for you. I mean, there is nothing fun about blow-drying your hair in this weather and then watching all your make-up slide down your face. So, how about we turn down the heat a bit, put our hairdryers away and focus on hair-ups? During the summer months an up-do strikes the perfect balance between being chic and comfortable and that’s what it’s all about, people!

CHOOSE YOUR SIDE Personally I like to split hair-ups into two camps. SLEEK versus ROUGH. The former is a very smooth look which is more suited to bridal - think Penelope Cruz. Damn, that woman always knocks it out of the park; she knows what suits her and sticks with it. Ms Cruz never leans towards vintage, always keeping it sleek and high class. Now if you like a bit of rough (like me), you are aiming for a DIY feel to your look. Messy hairdos are having a moment. Styles once resigned to lazy girls are now desirable across the board, making today’s hair standards refreshingly less than perfect. The key is to make sure you get that ever-so-slightly undone look. You have to rough it up a bit and allow flyaways, bumps and full-on sections of hair to be free and natural.

TICK TOCK Now, a good hair-up shouldn’t take a long time to do. If you are in the salon and you have been sitting there for over an hour – well, there is something wrong with your stylist. A hair-up is meant to be a quick way to totally change your look.

38

If you are going DIY and are stuck for quick and easy ideas then look no further than the milkmaid braid. Anyone and I do mean anyone - can do this.

1. Part unwashed hair down middle. 2. On one side, begin a braid just behind the lower part of your ear 3. Ensure the braid is tight with minimal flyaways and tie with a clear elastic.

4. Repeat on the opposite side - HELLO Pipi Longstocking! 5. Pull the first braid over the crown of

your head and secure with bobby pins.

6. Do the same on the other side. 7. Next, tuck ends under the opposite

braid and secure with bobby pins. Ta-da! Finish off with some hairspray and this versatile up-do will work for everything from a lunch time drink to your best

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Daniel cut his teeth working on shoots for the likes of Cosmo and Elle, while his Fashion Week experience gave him the skills to tackle any hair type or problem

THE UP-DO RULES Choose your outfit first before deciding on what kind of hair up you will be going for. If you are getting styled in the salon, the stylist should ALWAYS ask you what you will be wearing for your special event. If they don’t, make them stop what they are doing, get up and... walk out! Otherwise you so know you would be leaving with a Bridget Jones monstrosity. If you have a fringe you need to be very careful, especially if it is a full fringe. Either push it slightly to one side to open up the face a little more or take it back and incorporate it into the ‘do’ itself. Now I probably have a load of angry women sitting there now thinking, “Thanks a lot Daniel! You told me in your last column to cut my hair into a bob and now you want me to wear my hair up? idiot!” Well hear me out. A hairup doesn’t always mean everything has to be scraped up into a bun. You can totally change your look by simply backcombing your crown and creating a slight beehive. Finish the look by slicking the sides back with a little gel. British actress Sienna Miller is a perfect example of someone who has a bob yet manages to wear her hair in many different styles.

WHAT’S IN - WHAT’S OUT The humble braid has weaved its way on to the red carpet, with stylish stars such as Kate Hudson, Kate Bosworth and Olivia Palermo all sporting one variety or another. Whether you fancy halo braids, fishtail plaits or plaited ponytails follow in the footsteps of the celebs and get plaiting. French low-slung ponytails remain the biggest up-do trend for SS15, with Giambattista Valli, Gucci, Jason Wu and Stella McCartney among the designers showcasing casual tied back styles.

THE WONDER OF YOUTUBE How did we ever live without it? Honestly, there are so many amazing tutorials on hair-ups, some of them even manage to blow me away and I have seen pretty much everything out there.

You can take your outfit from a seven to a perfect 10 by doing a Blake Lively and pulling your hair over to one side. Just brush your hair to the side, pin it in a cross and lay your hair over the pins. Red carpet ready in minutes from just moving your hair. I guess I must talk about the side bun (yawn!) I know many of you still love this look, but I am done with it, well I was actually over it three years ago if you want to know the truth. I would much rather keep it fresh and move the bun to the middle #JustSaying.

Never be scared to experiment or create a new look, It’s your hair, you can do what you like with it. Just try not to overdo it – remember, you are not trying to win the title of Prom Queen 2015.

Exotic Eyes The fact that this product is waterproof is just a bonus. Bioderma makeup remover will not take off this baby so you will need an oil-based eye makeup remover. It lasts all day and doesn’t smudge nor transfer. The colour is so vibrant and pretty. I love this turquoise colour for the summer; it looks absolutely stunning on the eyes. The thin tip is so fine and perfect to create a delicate line and of course a flick if you wish. It’s so easy to use and it’s affordable.

Colour Craze

Feeling Fruity The colour Morange is OMG!! It’s like a bright pop, which draws everyone to it like a magnet. It’s a vivid bright refreshing orange, which is somehow very wearable. As always lasting power is fantastic considering this is not even a matte! The creamy finish does result in a bit of transfer but that in no way lessens the color intensity of your lips! It lasts on and on easily for more than 6 hours and fades to a bright orange tint evenly. It just gives a nice pop of colour for when you don’t want to do too much on the eyes but still want

This product is magic in a bottle and absolutely perfect for summer in Marbella with all the pool parties, as this will keep your makeup in place all day long. It’s a liquid converter that transforms powder formulas and pencils into smudge-proof, long lasting makeup. Aqua Seal instantly converts your favorite makeup products into waterproof formulas. Its lightweight, liquid texture intensifies pigments and shimmer for a dramatic, long lasting result. It’s also very handy to seal in drawn on brows.

40

What a fabulous palette! The pigmentation is great with all the typical Urban Decay longevity and blendability. The colours are bright, fun and unique – so it’s perfect to add a real pop of colour to any of your summer looks. I would highly recommend this palette to anyone looking to add some colour to their collection. Although this pallete may not be to everyone liking due to the vibrant colours, you will still be able to create a few complete “looks”.

Popping Pink Nails China Glaze is the polish that started my addiction for bright coloured nails, it’s so pretty and if you’re someone who speaks a lot with your hands it’s a real eye catcher. China Glaze has charming shades - I don’t think there is a colour you can’t find in this intriguing line. The best thing I like about China Glaze polishes is that they come in so many vibrant colours. It’s good quality; it brushes on smoothly, dries quickly and chips less frequently. SISTERS

in Style

Whether you’re more urban and laid back like Andrea, or feminine and young classic like Dominique, we are sure you will find something you love and can relate to. Interview by India Beltrán

Sisko Akt was created by Andrea and Dominique Forsström, currently based in Marbella. Both have been working in the fashion industry for many years as models for important brands, both nationally and internationally.

This artistic influence comes from a creative background; their mother was a professional ballroom teacher and ballroom dancewear designer, and their father owned a successful classic car restoration company in Scandinavia, as well as being president of the Finnish Jaguar Club.

Andrea (right) is currently

SISKO AKT

studying Fashion Business & Fashion Design. She has worked with big name brands as a fashion model, from MercedesBenz fashion week in Madrid, to working for Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior and La Perla. She has worked in Europe, South America, and in the Asian fashion capitals of Shanghai and Hong Kong. Andrea has also starred in music videos with famous artists such as Tinie Tempah, Taio Cruz, and the latest single from Armin Van Buuren ft. Mr. Probz, entitled ‘Another You’.

Dominique (left)

completed a degree in Business Management and Administration, and is currently finishing her studies specialising in Interior Design in Madrid. She has worked as a fashion and commercial model in Paris, Norway, Chile and Spain, and is currently exploring parallel artistic fields, which have a very close relation to fashion. She is also a professional dancer, having danced ballet since she was 3 years old, as well as ballroom dances, which has given her the chance to compete in international dance competitions.

WHERE DID THE NAME SISKO AKT COME FROM? In order to fully understand what Sisko Akt is, we have to tell you a little bit about our past. Sisko means Sister in Finnish, because we were born and raised in Finland. Akt comes from Act, because our upbringing was later in England. In our life together as sisters, we have always “played” with different languages in games, secret codes, joking around and even in our silly teenage arguments! It was a game to us, as some words are funnier, shorter, easier, or more significant in one language than another, whichever one came first to us. Now that we had to label ourselves with a name, we did it mixing two languages that have been a big part of our lives. One day, whilst on vacation and disconnecting from our usual hectic studying and working timetables, we noticed that combining our different styles and personalities into our Instagram account (@siskoakt) and blog at societymarbella.com, we had something unique and interesting to present to the world. Doing things together is much more fun and rewarding than doing it alone!

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF FASHION FOR YOU?

Fashion has transcended world history and as a result, reflected different trends throughout time. Prosperous economies, world wars, economic recession, dictatorship regimes, freedom of expression... All of these social, political and cultural changes have marked us deeply. So fashion is more than simply purchasing brands. It is a human form of expression. Fashion expresses the culture that we were born into, and the changes we have gone through and are constantly going through in our lives.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR STYLES? Inspiration can come from so many different places. The change of colours of the seasons, a song on the radio that lifts your soul, a flower that catches your eye whilst walking home, a perfume that brings back childhood memories or a person who touched you with their energy and inspiration.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR SISTER’S STYLE? Dominique: Andrea is not

afraid to mix crazy trends. Her style is very urban and effortless, and her taste in clothes is undeniable. One day, I remember us running out of the house, she had put together an amazing outfit in a minute! A lot of people complemented on her look that day, and I couldn’t help but chuckle, as I was the only one who knew that she was wearing her PJs!

Andrea: I would describe

Dominique’s style as feminine and young classic, always looking tip-top from head to toe. She always hits the right look for each occasion! She can achieve an amazing elegant look by only wearing a simple crisp white shirt with a pair of jeans, no jewelry, no accessories at all, her only accessory is her long straight impeccable hair. ‘Less is more’ she confirms!

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO FIND THEIR OWN STYLE? Don’t be afraid to experiment. There will always be trends you like more or less. As long as you know what kinds of clothing pieces flatter you best, you’ll be able to play with different styles and have fun! Stay true to yourself and what you feel confident in - and always dare to add a special accessory or try out something different!

WHY IS WHAT YOU WEAR IMPORTANT? Taking care of yourself affects your mood. When you dress up, it instantly affects your energy and motivation, no matter how you were feeling before! If you feel and present your best self to the world everyday, life will give back to you new opportunities, a better mood and a better energy overall!

TIPS WHEN SHOPPING FOR CLOTHES Shopping can sometimes be overwhelming, time consuming and even confusing, because we have so many brands and styles to choose from so here are our top tips

1. Before you go shopping, know what you want and need to buy. For example, if you are in a supermarket and you’re hungry, you’re going to buy food you don’t necessarily need. Well the same exact thing applies with clothes! If you are in a store and you feel like you have no clothes, “you are hungry”, so you’re going to grab a lot of things you don’t actually need or already have in your wardrobe. So make sure that before you go shopping, you sit down and make a list of everything you need to buy. Make it as detailed as you want, as this guide will help you discard options you don’t need and detect everything you do want while shopping. What really helps is getting to know who you are, knowing your flaws and qualities, and bringing out your personality in your style. It’s a way of telling the world who you are without having to talk.

2. Look for quality items - analyse the fabric and the fit. They don’t have to necessarily be designer items but you want to make sure you’re investing in good quality items, which in the long run, will save you money. It’s always a good idea to invest in quality basics that you know you’re going to use many times such as a good pair of jeans and a little black dress. 3. Know which colours suit you and add to your wardrobe items from your own colour palette. Each one of us is a certain colour of the season, if you’re not sure what colour season you are it’s a good idea to sit down in front of the mirror and hold different colours up to your face and see which ones lighten you up! Have in mind that some colours may overpower you if you are not familiar with your colour pallete. This makes you have less choices to choose while shopping, but in the end this is better because it will make you focus on things you really know suit you. 4. And last but not least, one of the best

ways to save our world environment and develop our own creativity is upcycling items we have kept in our closets and have forgotten about, modifying, cutting, redesigning or adding an extra little thing to it could make you feel that you have a brand new item in front of you!

LONG SKIRT: Not only is this type of skirt figure-flattering, the slit shows just enough of your gorgeous legs whilst still leaving plenty to the imagination.

BRA TOP: This is a fusion between a t-shirt and a bra. It’s not about showing off the stomach or the belly button, we’re talking more about highlighting the waist. From now on, it’s a story of comfort and ease, so the top becomes a chic, very worked bra. For Summer 2015, this new option is sexier than ever, even coming close to rivalling bikini tops. We love this look and, whether you identify as a boho girl or not, it’s a fun style to take for a spin!

Re-imagining business and leisure travel by private jet

S

ay ‘private aviation’ and the image conjured up by most people is one of CEOs and heads of state flying around the world to critical meetings, or the super rich jetting off to join their yacht in some exotic location. However, the reality is that while both the private jet and super yacht industries have made strong recoveries from the dark days of 2008, a yacht is a toy, while a jet is mainly a business tool. Time is money, and high net worth individuals with busy lives do not have time to stand around in queues at airports, beholden to airline schedules that dictate their business appointments, and are subject to delays and cancellations. As an example of flexibility and time efficiency, it is entirely possible for a CEO to get on a private jet at 0800hrs in New York, be in Washington DC for a late-morning meeting, have lunch with another client, and then return to New York in time for a late afternoon debrief before heading home. Or if you live in the UK, you could easily use a private jet to fly to meetings in Berlin and Paris within the working day, and be home in time for dinner in a fairly calm state of mind. This would simply not be possible if you were at the mercy of airline schedules. Although private aviation is more expensive per flying hour than a Business Class seat, the convenience and time saved in terms of work that

81

can be done makes it worth the extra expense. Beyond that, a private plane is also a more secure way of travelling, as you choose with whom you fly. While companies can write down such flights under the cost of doing business, things are different for private individuals who have to pay for travel out of their own pocket. However, just as there are many different kinds of cars with commensurate running costs attached, there is also a very wide range of private aircraft on the market, ranging from a single-engine, propeller-driven Cessna 172 to a twinturboprop Beechcraft Baron. At the other end of the scale, longrange jets with spacious cabins costing over US$50 million are available in the form of a Gulfstream G550 or Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), the latter based on the Boeing 737. However, if you only need to move between one and four people pointto-point over relatively short distances, the actual cost per head of private aviation can be minimised by using a smaller aircraft with its lower attendant running costs. That said, jets are always faster than propeller-driven aircraft, have quieter cabins and cruise at higher altitudes, which is both more fuel efficient, and helps them avoid bad weather.

82

This is the reason why over a decade ago, a handful of aircraft manufacturers like Cessna, Embraer, Honda and Piper identified a hitherto unfilled niche in the market for a Very Light Jet (VLJ) class aircraft that seats four passengers and has comparatively low operating costs. Malaga-based Jet Express operates a US$2.7 million, single-pilot certified Cessna Citation Mustang, which is named after the famous P-51 Mustang fighter from WW2. This VLJ has a range of just over 2,000km, so while it will easily take you from Malaga to any destination in Spain or the South of France, a hop to London will require an en route fuel stop. Thinking out of the box, Jet Express CEO and pilot, Ruchir Gupta, has

Jet Circle is a new concept that gives travellers the option of getting together with friends or like-minded individuals.

taken this fuel stop requirement and turned it into a USP, creating enjoyable leisure time on the ground for passengers in the form of stays in luxury hotels and fine dining in the best local restaurants en route. Think of it this way. Some people turn the chore of driving from their home in the UK to their villa in Spain into part of their vacation, staying in chateaus and dining in fine restaurants in Spain and France over a period of three or four days on the way there and back. If you were to choose a fuelling stop near Bilbao in Northern Spain, for instance, a chauffeur-driven car could meet you at the aircraft, bring you to visit the Frank Gehry designed Guggenheim Museum, and then on to lunch in a Michelin Star establishment. Then you would be chauffeured back to the aircraft, and resume your journey to London or wherever the most convenient private aviation airport to home might be. Thanks to their second innovative product, Jet Express Journeys, you don’t even have to be on your way to a final destination to use their services. Fully described on their website, these Journeys been carefully formulated to take in some of the best destinations in Spain, Portugal, France and Morocco in their Grand Mediterranean Tour. The Gems of Europe Tour, based out of the Frankfurt JetPad, does a similar adventure in Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy and Spain.

Within the Jet Express menu, Jet Circle is a new concept that gives travellers the option of getting together with friends or like-minded individuals who wish to go to the same destination, and therefore share the cost of the trip. With four passengers, some might want to go all the way, while sometimes one or two might want consider the fuelling stop their final destination. Call it an executive air taxi if you like, but the concept is similar. Private jet journeys are normally two-way, and you only want to go one way the cost is higher as you are also charged for the aircraft to return to its home FBO (Fixed Base Operator) airport. The third Jet Express USP is discounted one-way flights. As they have established JetPads throughout Europe like the UK, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and Spain, and are actively courting business in those countries, their oneway fee is discounted so long as the journey starts and ends at one of these JetPads. If your journey is one way only, Jet Circle offers its clients a comparatively efficient way of doing this by private jet, sans the tedious driving aspect and potential traffic hassles. If you are sharing the aircraft with others, the two prime passengers who wish to travel at a certain time on a

CEO Jet Express Ruchir Gupta

certain day set the schedule, and the others have to be flexible enough to agree to that time. This is much less of an issue due to the social rather than business nature of Jet Circle flights. With regular airlines, a first, business or economy-flex ticket allows you to change your flight, and passengers who do not turn up do not have to pay a penalty. With private aviation, you pay up front and there is no refund, so that is incentive enough to turn up. In the supercar world, Mercedes started an owners’ club for their Mercedes SLR McLaren supercar. Through this, owners met other wealthy and like-minded people they would not otherwise have become acquainted with, and some even went on to forge friendships. I know of one instance where two people who met through the SLR Club ended up doing a multi-million euro business deal together.

83

Jet Express also offers a bespoke Concierge service to look after all your needs in terms of ground transportation, hotels and other special wishes around your flights. Being a small aircraft with a good thrust-to-weight-ratio, the Mustang requires a take-off field length of 948m, and can land in just 725m. Thus it happily operates from small provincial airfields, which usually have the advantages of low air traffic density and relatively convenient jam free road access. In flight, it has a maximum speed of Mach 0.63, which equates to 483mph or 777km/h. Cruising speed is 390mph or 630km/h, which is about 100mph slower than a commercial jet in top speed, and maximum range cruise. Many large corporations who used to own their own aircraft now use fractional ownership schemes or simply

84

rent a plane when they need it. Hence the rise and rise of companies like NetJets. Thanks to the lower operating costs of hiring a VLJ from Jet Express, your potential costs would be less than half that of NetJets, and about twice that of flying Business Class. Of course, if you do need to get somewhere quickly, carrying more than four people, then Jet Express can arrange for a larger aircraft with greater range to suit your needs. Jet Express offers some unique and pioneering products that help them to stand out in an increasingly competitive market place. The very idea of touring by air and stopping for lunch in a fine establishment along the way harks back to the early days of flying when it was not a chore, but an adventure you looked forward to. jetexpress.pl

Our in-depth motoring review

Porsche’s latest GT3 RS is a civilised street legal racer

86

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the PORSCHE GT3 RS (991)

87

TORQUE TALK

T

he new GT3 RS will lap the Nürburgring in 7 min 20 seconds. Let that sink in. This is just 2.0 seconds a lap slower than the mighty 620hp twinturbo 997 GT2 RS, and a gnat’s whisker off the 7 min 19.63 sec time set by the 657hp, supercharged Corvette ZR1 on its optional Cup tyres. With its new mix of aero, chassis and engine, baked to perfection, the new GT3 RS is thus the 13th fastest production car in the world on the ‘Ring, and the third fastest production Porsche ever there after the 918 Spyder (6.0 min 57 sec). Tellingly, it is also nearly 8.0 sec a lap quicker than the Carrera GT, Porsche’s flagship supercar of the previous decade. Even on the latest Michelins that now make it significantly quicker and easier to handle, the Carrera GT is still marginally bested by the new GT3 RS. What makes the achievement all the more spectacular is the fact that this blinding lap time was set by a naturally aspirated 911 with a mere 500hp. Given that no production Ferrari or Lamborghini comes within 5.0 sec of the GT3 RS here, if that does not vindicate Porsche’s continuous honing of the 911’s rear-engine formula, then nothing does. Bilster Berg has been called a miniNürburgring. Opened in 2013, this Tilkedesigned private track in Northern Germany shares some of the driving challenges of the fabled ‘Ring, but with

88

even greater elevation changes across its much shorter lap.

a happy situation when you have a very quick car and limited track time.

With the challenge of dropping medium sweepers taken at full bore in third, technical S-bends and a long, fast back straight with a big yump in the middle, it is a very technical track, and a very fast and demanding one on both car and driver.

Being able to push the car through the sequences of bends here quickly highlighted the cars supreme grip and handling balance. Front-end grip is better than ever, and once you have settled the front end into a turn you can really play with the throttle.

I drove the 560hp 991 Turbo S here in 2013, and was really impressed with the way the fastest mainstream Porsche tackled this tricky circuit. But I also wished that the GT3 launch had been here too as the lighter, more track oriented 911 would have undoubtedly been a ball of fun. Our wish came true with the even more hard-core GT3 RS, and as I pulled out of the familiar pit lane, the needle on my anticipation meter was off the dial.

Going in on a trailing throttle for instance, does not result in a big off, but just a gentle drift that can be used to tighten your line if you have misjudged a tightening bend.

The first turn here is a medium speed leftright sequence, and it was immediately apparent that the new RS has very good turn-in and steering feel, while the active rear-wheel steering helps the back end to follow almost telepathically. The track become faster as it opens out, and there are some very technical downhill bends where you really need to get your entry speed and line right if you are to stay out of the gravel traps. Luckily I have been here twice before, and so was not learning the track and the car at the same time, which is never

Alternatively, you can hold your line on a steady or slowly increasing throttle, or add enough power to break the traction of those huge rear tyres. If you have done this progressively, the PSM’s calibration will even allow you to exit the bend with a whiff of power oversteer. Switch off the electronic safety net, and the variable ratio limited slip differential that is shared with the standard GT3 really comes into play. This makes the new RS even easier to powerslide than its predecessor, which used a fixed ratio diff. Admittedly this is not the fastest way round a given bend, but certainly a lot of fun, especially in a car whose balance is as exquisite and instinctive as this. In a nutshell, the great steering and chassis allows you to choose your exit angle more easily than any 911 I have ever driven!

TORQUE TALK This user-friendly handling even gave me the confidence to drift the car in third at the treacherous downhill off camber ‘Mausefalle’ bend where a mis-step will have you in the kitty litter. Accolades for this fine chassis behaviour go to Team Manager, Holger Bartels, who also set up the 918 Spyder. Between the bends, the GT3 RS is fast, really fast. I thought the extra aero would eat into its high-speed acceleration, but the reality is that because the cornering speeds are so much higher, you can slingshot out of bends and reach higher velocities here with a feeling of great security and stability. The long straight gave me the chance to relax a little and savour the character of the new 4.0 litre motor whose longer stoke has done nothing to detract from a keen revving ability. If anything, this big banger breathes even more deeply than the 3.8 in the normal GT3, pulling harder and more keenly in the mid and upper reaches of its wide rev band. There is so much grunt on tap, the car always seems to be going quickly. Then you realise you have only reached 7,000rpm, and have another 1,250rpm to go before peak power, and even more till the cut-out. So while the bigger motor peaks 200rpm before its 3.8 litre sibling, in the grand scheme of things this is irrelevant. It sounds like a race motor too. Unlike a standard Porsche flat-six such as the

3.4 litre in the Boxster, which changes its soundtrack to a scream beyond 5,500rpm, the GT3 RS is voiced with a fairly linear but more guttural, bass profundo acoustic from the mid-band all the way to its even higher rev limit. There is a yump on the long straight at Bilster Berg that I really noticed when driving the bombastic Turbo S here in 2013. With the GT3 RS, I took it flat and the aero just pushed the car into the tarmac with no hint of aviating. The counterpoint of this amazing chassis set up as noted earlier, is that the low speed ride on public roads is even suppler than the plain vanilla GT3. Impressive? You bet. The motor sitting under the huge wing of the latest GT3 RS is an all-new unit developed from the 9A1 block. Like the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 motor of 2011, it uses the 200cc greater capacity of the current RSR racer for improved torque, and higher revs for more horsepower. “There was a lot of speculation on the GT3 RS engine, with some people even saying we had gone back to the GT1 Mezger block,” Andreas recalled. “It takes time to develop the full potential of any motor and the 9A1 engine is still a youngster in the overall scheme of things. The GT3’s 3.8 was the first evolutionary step, and the 4.0 litre is the second.” “Although this direct-injection motor has the same 4.0 litre capacity as the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 engine, the bore and stroke

are slightly different,” he continued. “The old Mezger 4.0 had a 102.7 x 80.4mm bore x stroke, while the new engine is 102.0 x 81.7mm, with the stock GT3 3.8 being 102.0 x 77.5mm.” Beyond this, the pistons come from Pankl and are connected to the steel billet crankshaft by bespoke titanium rods. Incidentally, the V361 steel used for the crankshaft is the same as in the motor of the Porsche 919 endurance racer. Made by a process that involves melting and cooling the material several times in a vacuum, this crankshaft is super pure, super strong and super expensive. This is the motorsport connection at work! The piston design also features special rings to reduce the possibility of oil draining past the gap in a ring should this end up at the ‘bottom’ of a cylinder when the car stands idle for long periods. The compression ratio is unchanged at 12.9:1, and the VVT camshaft profiles are specific to the RS, with slight differences on full throttle operation. The ignition timing was also adapted to the longer stroke. The intake is new with a larger air cleaner box housing a cloth BMC air filter. On the exhaust side, RS specific headers feed the spent gases to a sound flap enabled titanium exhaust system made by Ricardo. The big numbers are 500hp, or the less evocative sounding 493bhp, for

89

TORQUE TALK a specific output of 125hp/Litre. This is underpinned by 480Nm (354 ft Ib) of torque with the rev limiter set at 8,800rpm. In relative terms, this is the same number of horses as the 997 GT3 RS 4.0, with peak torque up by 20Nm. But where the 997’s Mezger engine reached its peak power and torque at 8,000rpm and 5,750rpm, the 9A1 motor reaches its zeniths at 8,250rpm and 6,250rpm respectively. On paper, this also appears to be only a modest increase over the 469hp and 32.4Nm (24 ft Ib) of the normal 991 GT3. But as I have learned over the years, with Andreas Preuninger, aka The Wizard of Weissach, and his canny team of engineers at Weissach’s GT cars division, nothing is ever that straightforward. “While it is true that the new RS is only slightly faster in straight line acceleration than the GT3, the vastly superior aero and mechanical grip mean that it simply drives away in the curves,” he said. “On a race track the RS would simply be gone after a couple of bends.” As far as the manual vs PDK debate goes, Andy confidently says that, like a racecar, the ultimate trackday weapon will always have PDK because it is simply faster. The paddle action is now shorter, and pulling both paddles together finds neutral. To further underline the cars track readiness, there is also a pit lane speed limiter button on the centre console.

a holistic point of view as a balance between sport and comfort. The factor that best judges the outcome of any individual model in the Porsche range is simply how far the dial is turned towards either extreme. However, with the incorporation of PASM, GT rather than mainstream style, the boys at Weissach actually managed to extend the chassis performance envelope in both directions, making the new GT3 a viable daily driver as well as an even more accomplished track day weapon. Thanks to the use of a magnesium roof and carbon-fibre front and rear compartment lids, the RS is able to boast a 10kg weight saving over the GT3. Its predecessor, the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 litre, showed a 15kg advantage over its 3.8 litre counterpart. Crucially, the major areas where weight savings have been made are above the cars waistline, benefitting its centre of gravity. This lower centre of gravity and the wider tracks are complimented by

even greater attention to geometrical accuracy through the full range of suspension travel demanded by the significant increase in downforce at speed. This is more easily done on a race car, which has spring rates at least twice as great as a sporty road car, but the PASM active damping helps here. Taking the GT3’s inherent technical advantages of PASM and rear steering to the next level, the GT3 RS is the ultimate (for now!) expression of that basic concept. The low speed secondary ride is actually suppler than the standard GT3s, while its high speed performance is also superior. The best of both worlds is a simplistic, non-technical way of describing this cars fabulous ride and handling balance. With the increasing safety and luxury demands being placed on carmakers, even Porsche GT3s have been getting larger and heavier in recent years. The 997 GT3 RS tipped the scales at 1,360kg, and the 991 GT3 RS weighs 1,420kg. As with the GT3, the fuel tank takes 64-litres and LHD models have the option of a 90-litre long range tank.

The transmission has been uprated with thicker flanges for the driveshafts, uprated bearings, different final drive and an optimised oil system. Shift times are the same as the GT3 as they as fast as needed anyway, and only the software has been modified to allow quicker shifting earlier in the power band on part throttle operation. The gearbox software has been massaged for the new engine, and the limited slip diff is a variable ratio unit as on the GT3. “We tried it with a single mass flywheel, but the noises were horrible and certainly not acceptable in a road car,” Andreas explained. “By default, PDK needs to be partnered with a dual mass flywheel, but we lightened this one as much as possible, and it is just on the edge in behaviour and noise terms. You can consider it a very light dual mass flywheel, or a very heavy single mass one,” he said jokingly. Any Porsche model from the entry-level Macan to the 918 Spyder has to be looked at from

“The project took 34 months from start to finish, initially in parallel with the GT3,” Andreas recalled. “We have a total of 60 development and pre-production cars.”

90

TORQUE TALK Styling wise, a modern interpretation of the traditional indented bonnet crease that was a 911 feature up to the 993 era returns on the RS. Measuring 30cm in width, this indent also appears on the bonded magnesium roof panel, where it adds extra torsional stiffness as well as adding to the cars already purposeful looks when viewed from above. “This feature is our ‘graphics’ for the RS,” said Andreas. The magnesium roof panel is bonded to the shell and saves 1.1kg compared to aluminium. Significantly, it is also lighter than a painted carbon-fibre panel. The front glass is the same as the GT3 but the rear window is plastic and saves 3.5kg. A glance at the front and rear of the new car tell you that aero is the mantra here. The prominent front splitter is to be expected, but the front wings featuring triple louvres whose airflow effect adds some downforce over the front axle, shows just how serious the GT team are about aero on this RS. I asked Andreas how he would define the maximum downforce a road legal car should have. “As much as technically possible without compromising drag too much, and then feel it out subjectively,” was his answer. “The number of louvres and their exact angle is the result of hours in the wind tunnel,” Andreas explained. “They were hard to homologate on a road car as you are normally not allowed to see the tyre from above through a wing, but we managed in the end, and that is why we have the layer of mesh you can see when you look through the louvres.” “The rules are there to prevent spray coming out onto the front screen or side

windows in wet weather,” he continued. “However, in our wind tunnel and real world testing, we found that not only was there no spray, but that the air exiting the louvres travels downwards under the door mirrors, along the sides of the car in a laminar flow pattern. This boosts the ram air flow into the intakes in front of the rear wheels so it all works together as a system.” The profile of the tall rear wing also changes across its chord. The shaping and angle of attack across its width varying to maximise the effect of the airflow coming off the roof as well as that reaching the wing from the rear wheel arches. The wing is adjustable to two angles of attack, these being three and seven degrees. The top of the engine lid features air extraction vents just below the rear glass, a zone where the relatively low pressure helps the extraction of hot air from the engine bay. This is a very significant development for the team who previously used scoops on the lid for extra ram air at speed to provide an extra 10 or 15hp, which naturally could not be quantified for the official figures since they are measured on a rolling road. In this case, the Turbo style intakes in front of the rear arches provide the ram air to the engine bay, with hot air then exiting via the above mentioned under-pressure extraction. It is a neat and logical airflow management system that amusingly led to speculation by spotters of the camouflaged prototypes that the car was turbocharged! The small ducktail incorporated into the trailing edge of the engine lid cleans up

91

TORQUE TALK airflow separation, thus reducing drag. However, unless you are close enough to see it on a car whose colour allows it to stand out, there is no question that most eyeballs will home straight in on the huge rear wing standing proud on twin supports the likes of which have never before been seen on a street legal factory Porsche. More than ever, this is a car that looks like you could just slap some numbers on its sides and go racing. The increase in front downforce was the key to allowing Andy’s team to use a new taller rear wing to balance things out. The extra height of the wing also puts it in an area of cleaner airflow, allowing it to be smaller for the same effect. The various intake and exit ducts in the flat bottom under the car also contribute to this fine overall result.

The new uprights are same as the GT3 race, and are race homologated double clamped lightweight castings. As expected, the car has fully adjustable coil-overs with helper springs and threeway adjustable anti-roll bars. The RS runs 1 min 30 degrees negative camber all round to help turn-in and stability. The 9.5J x 20 and 12.5J x 21-inch forged alloy wheels are significantly bigger than the GT3 equivalents. They are light for their size and very strong as they have to cope with the extra load imposed by the aerodynamic downforce.

The net result is 330 kg of overall downforce at top speed; 110kg over the front axle and 220kg over the rear. In parenthesis, this is three times greater than the GT3, over twice the 170kg of the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 and 80-percent of the current Cup car. “Effectively, we have the downforce of the 918 Spyder, but with GT3 levels of drag,” said Andreas. “This result is unparalleled in the industry.”

Shod with 265/35ZR20 and 325/30ZR21 Porsche specific Michelin Pilot Cup 2 rubber, the 918 Spyder rear tyres in particular come very close to the arch lips. While these bigger and heavier wheels and tyres add to unsprung weight, the extra mechanical grip produced by the 20-percent greater contact patches more than make up for this. PCCB brakes are an option.

The GT3 RS launches to 100km/h in a claimed 3.3 sec, and passes 200km/h in 10.9 sec on the way to its 310km/h (193mph) top speed. The normal GT3 takes 3.5 and 10.9 sec respectively, so the greater drag of the bigger aero appendages that make the RS so much faster in the bends clearly eats up the extra power and torque.

In the cabin, lightweight carbonfibre sports seats are standard, and the standard (in Germany, a no-cost optional in some markets) equipment Club Sport package adds a bolt-in roll cage, full harnesses and fire extinguisher system. The Sport Chrono package includes a GPS lap timer and a function that links it to your smart phone. The press launch cars were preproduction, and my test car did not have the Club Sport Package, which would have stiffened the body shell further to the benefit of handling.

The RS has 45mm wider front and rear tracks than the stock GT3 under its Turbo width bodyshell, with 35mm of this accounted for by the offsets of the wider wheels. The rest comes from longer

92

forged aluminium suspension arms and longer steering rods. As always on GT3 models, the arms are shared with the Cup cars, and are split so they can be shimmed.

Many people assume the seats in all Porsche cars are made by Recaro because of the long working history of these two German companies, but in fact these 918 Spyder style carbon-fibre backed chairs are made by Lear. They appear to be identical to the ones in Porsche’s Hybrid supercar, but are not. “Because the placement height and angle of the seats in the two cars are different, the backrest angle is adapted accordingly,” Andeas explained. “Because the padding is optimised for the new angle and the different driving position, the cushions are bespoke as well.” I was curious to know how long the GT3 RS took to develop and how many pre-production test cars exist. “The project took 34 months from start to finish, initially in parallel with the GT3,” Andreas recalled. “We have a total of 60 development and pre-production cars.” Only around 2,000 GT3 RS cars will be made over the next two years. This will be the only surviving naturally aspirated 991 variant as the mainstream Carrera goes into its second term later this year with turbocharged motors. With its good low speed ride in town, fabulous high-speed performance on track, and million dollar looks, the new GT3 RS is a truly stellar achievement for the Weissach engineers. I was expecting it to be special but Porsche has once again managed to exceed my expectations.

G

ibraltar appeared in the opening scene of the Bond film The Living Daylights, featured in an Elvis song, and provided a backdrop for Stieg Larsson’s The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Plus, did you know that Molly Bloom, (Ulysses by James Joyce) is in fact a Gibraltarian, not a Dubliner? On top of all this cultural fame, Gibraltar has recently scored two firsts: the new Gibraltar football team scored its first goal in an international game on 29 March 2015, and exactly one month later, the Casino Sunborn opened its doors as the world’s first, and only, casino on a super yacht hotel. Casino Sunborn is a venture between two Finnish companies - Sunborn and Paf. Sunborn opened its Gibraltar super

yacht hotel in March 2014, which within its first year has become a landmark luxury destination and entertainment centre for residents and tourists in Gibraltar and Spain and UK corporate visitors. It’s a testament to Sunborn’s success as pioneers of the floating hotel concept, and a super addition to its hotel portfolio that includes a yacht hotel near London’s Canary Wharf. Paf is a highly successful and well-respected casino operator based in Finland’s Åland islands. The business operation was set up to create profit for the good of the community; this is still the focus of its business aims. Subsequently, Paf has won the accolade of being named Most Socially Responsible Operator by eGaming Review. Anders Ingves, CEO of Paf told us “The opening of the Casino Sunborn in Gibraltar signifies that Paf’s land-based activities are now taking a big and exciting step into Europe,” and Hans Niemi, CEO of Sunborn sees it as signalling “excellent potential for future yacht hotel casinos.”

97 97

So, the collaboration between these two experienced operators seems certain to guarantee visitors to the Casino Sunborn, a top class experience. Indeed, when we spoke to Casino Manager, Dominick Stenson, he talked about a return to the golden days of the casino; the era when people dressed up for an evening at the tables and the word ‘casino’ was strongly tinged with the romance of the French Riviera. Casino Sunborn certainly sounds as if it will be a cut above the typical modern casino. Dominick adds, “Our concept is based on reviving the ‘Club’ atmosphere, intimate, friendly, welcoming and of course a safe, secure and professional gaming environment.”

However, don’t worry, you aren’t required to dress up like James Bond in order to enter the casino. Dress is smart casual dress code, and while everyone over 18 is welcome it does ask that visitors show respect for the dress code and it’s guests. If you’re not certain about what is acceptable, check Entry Requirements at casinosunborn.com. What can you expect from the Casino Sunborn? Well, free membership and a complimentary drink on your first visit. All the latest slot machines with mystery jackpots, five roulette tables and five card tables dedicated to the classic card games Black Jack and Punto Banco, plus its unique Sunborn Stud Poker all open from 4pm to 4am daily.

Extensive Prive Gaming Suite with bar, spa pool and butler service will thrill the most demanding guests

98

There’s something for everyone. There’s also a Loyalty Programme that really rewards players offering many benefits and gifts such as fabulous Rolex watches and jewellery, vouchers for the Sunborn Spa, dinner at the top-deck Sky Lounge restaurant, overnight stays and much more, plus entry to prize draws and exciting promotions – the current prize draw is to win a Harley Davidson HD V-ROD 2015 Night ROD Special! Plus, for players who would like more privacy, or companies looking for a stylish corporate entertainment venue, the VIP Private Gaming Suite provides a dedicated waitress service, plus luxury food and beverage packages to suit every taste. The Suite also has a large open balcony and terrace where guests can enjoy a drink and stunning views across the marina with the imposing ‘Rock’ as a back drop- it’s a unique experience.

Other VIP services will include private jet, yacht and limousine transfer and charters, plus Harley Davidson bike rental. Guests can also book the adjoining hotel suites for a ‘Play & Stay’ experience. And, of course, there is the rest of the Sunborn yacht hotel to enjoy, with it’s luxury spa, delightful Sky Restaurant, numerous bars, pool terrace and five star rooms and suites.

OVER 10 MILLION HOMES IN SPAIN ARE UNDERINSURED For most people their home is their biggest financial investment and one of their most important assets. Therefore it is essential that your property and all its possessions be properly and comprehensively insured.

asking for a quotation or filing a claim, our customer service staff will guide you through the process and explain everything in your language.

Being simply insured is not enough. Check your insurance policy, ask your provider about potential loopholes, make sure its comprehensively insured, or you could face costly repairs should something go wrong.

Buildings insurance covers the actual structure of your home and includes garages, swimming pools, gardens, tennis courts, gates, patios and fences. Cover includes the cost of repairs from damage caused by fire, storm, flood and earthquake. Buildings insurance also covers the permanent fixtures and fittings in your Spanish home and includes fitted kitchens, bathrooms, oil and gas pipes, etc. It’s important that you check your policy carefully. The sum insured must cover the cost of rebuilding the property, and not the current market value.

DECIDING BETWEEN A SPANISH OR UK BASED INSURANCE COMPANY If you live in the UK and rent out your property in Spain, then it makes sense to use a UK based insurer. If you live in Spain then it may be easier to contract your home insurance from a Spanish based insurer. Línea Directa is a Spanish based insurance company that offers comprehensive insurance for your home, with a dedicated Expat customer service centre in English or German. Whether you’re

HOME COUTURE

This month, Foc Design takes it to the bedroom!

2

The bedroom is surely the haven of any home – it’s where we rest and regroup our thoughts, where we re-energise and escape. It can be a personal hideaway or a romantic getaway but, whether your bedroom is your own or shared with a loved one, it is where we spend nearly a third of our lives so why should it not be a lap of luxury and bespoke to your tastes and desires? As practical as the space may be with its form and function, it needs to be comfortable and help us dissolve the day’s stresses away. Other areas of the home

4

are communal and can easily be dictated by other members of the family and their needs but this space, these square meters are just for you so indulge a little and master that bedroom of yours! FOC adores wallpaper and we happily use it to dress stylehungry walls when opportunities arise, especially in a bedroom. Next to paint, it’s the least expensive medium with which to totally transform the feeling of a room. Whether you prefer a subtle approach of dressing one wall (we suggest the headboard wall to add depth and impact to a 3 room) or you prefer the wrap around effect, wallpaper adds a statement like no other. Subtle patterns or a bold stripe, the opportunities are endless. For the smaller members of the family, there are some stunning younger collections and vinyl based wall coverings, enabling you to decorate your walls with a wipeable, washable finish. Whichever colour you have your heart set on, there is a wallpaper out there for you to suit both taste and budget! The softer aquas and jades are a refreshing trend at the moment, keeping a room feeling fresh and clean without making the room feel too cold. Mixing the colour with coppers and driftwoods, natural woods and wickers will give you a lovely balance and add homely elements to your sanctuary. 1 Horizontally striped wall paper in soft blues 2 Crumpled look pendant lamp 3 Mongolian fur circular cushion in duck egg blue 4 Mint ceramic lantern 5 Decorative wall plate All available at FOC Design, focdesign.es

A TANTALISING TASTE OF

Thailand

asn’t it been roasting lately? Here at SOCIETY Towers we have been fanning ourselves with anything that we can lay our hands on for some weeks now – and that’s with the assistance of airconditioning! When it gets this hot this early in the summer we know that there is one part of the world that we want to visit on our ongoing culinary tour and that’s Asia, mostly because it has developed its wonderfully tasty and aromatic cuisines to suit the high temperatures that are common in the area. We are so lucky in this part of the world to have some truly outstanding Asian restaurants, so it’s easy to find one to suit you but – if you aren’t yet a devoted fan and repeat visitor – may we suggest that you try Tuk Tuk? This is a wonderful place to visit during any time of the year, quite frankly, with a warm and welcoming interior, but summertime diners are especially lucky, since they can sit outside during the evening and enjoy their meal beside the huge fountain that lends an extra splash of elegance and coolness to Tuk Tuk’s ambience. In other words, ladies and gentlemen, this is a restaurant that seldom fails to impress, especially when you factor in the friendly and knowledgeable staff and the relaxed atmosphere. If you have spent the day being hassled by the boss, then this is the perfect place to unwind after a hard day at the office. If you love a good cocktail you will be in heaven, since the drinks menu offers a wide range of favourite tipples, from Mai Tais (yes please!) to the classic Piña Colada – and it doesn’t pay to rush into those all-important food choices, does it? Just sit back in your chair, listen to the Zen-like sound of the fountain and take a casual stroll through the main menu.

COSTA CUISINE

Whether your taste runs more to sushi and sashimi or you prefer classics like crispy duck and Thai fish cakes, there is more than enough choice to inspire the most fastidious palate. It took us some time to choose our starters but in the end we decided to mix it up a little and opted for the Squid and Spring Onion Dim Sum served with a tangy Thai Mango Relish and the Shrimp Tempura served with Mango Chilli Sauce, Coriander and Strawberry Salad. The dim sum was perfection on a plate, the flavours of the squid and spring onion enhanced by the mango relish, while the shrimp tempura was crispy outside and tender and full of flavour inside. To accompany these two dishes we ordered Crispy Chicken Spring Rolls served with Homemade Mayonnaise, Mango Sauce and Sweet & Sour Sauce. If you are thinking of the spring rolls that are typically served at your local Chinese takeaway then stop right now! These really were a taste sensation, the crispy pastry and mouthwatering interior the perfect marriage with the accompanying sauces. We also decided to test drive something from the sushi part of the menu and ordered the Mixed Sushi Platter, which included the delicious Prawn Tuk Tuk Special Roll. Please do not miss this if you like your food to be a treat for the eyes as well as a workout for the taste-buds.

Our main course choices were perhaps a little more traditional, but we were nevertheless very impressed that the Tuk Tuk chefs were able to breathe new life into some old favourites. Crispy duck, like the spring roll, is one of those dishes that we associate with our friendly local Chinese restaurant. Served with some of those lovely, thin pancakes, chopped slivers of fresh vegetables and plum

sauce it’s a perennially popular part of the menu – and rightly so. However, the Grilled Duck Breast served at Tuk Tuk is of an altogether more sophisticated nature: accompanied by Oriental Vegetables, bathed in a gorgeous Orange Sauce and finished with an Asian Salad, this dish was a winner. We also ordered the Lamb Chops, which were served on a bed of Sweet Potato and Chinese Five Spice Sautéed Spinach with Coriander and Mint Dressing. The member of the party

who demanded that we try the lamb is something of a stickler about the way she likes her meat to be cooked, so there were a few intakes of breath when the charming waiter brought this to the table. We need not have worried: just one mouthful confirmed that these chops were perfect and she was especially enthusiastic about the dressing, which was proclaimed an excellent alternative to the traditional mint sauce. The dessert menu also includes a few new spins on old favourites: it was hard to resist the siren call of the Banana Fritter rolled with Palm Sugar, Passion Fruit and Mango Sorbet and the Pineapple Carpaccio served with Mint garnish and Mint Sorbet but we were flagging. In the end we shared a gorgeous dish of Sticky Rice and Mango, which was cool and delicious. With the summer season very much in full swing, you should make sure that you arrive at Tuk Tuk early enough to be guaranteed a table. This place has proved as popular with holidaymakers as it is with locals and regular visitors, so does tend to fill up quickly. Just save us a place near the fountain, please! THE PERFECT PLACE TO

MEAT!

S

Reviewed by Natalie Rose Kern / Photos by Julia Roder

ince deciding to give up meat nine months ago, I’ve been fairly successful at living a veggie lifestyle and have almost entirely given up my carnivore ways… almost! So it was with much excitement and delight (and a great deal of guilty pleasure) that I accepted an invitation to Nueva Andalucía’s celebrated meat restaurant, Vovem, because I knew that I couldn’t possibly visit this “paradise for steak lovers” without sampling some of their finest cuts. Despite having only been open a couple of months, Vovem’s reputation for exquisite charcuterie is already the talk of the town, so if I was going to break my strict (ish!) self-imposed diet, then at least I should do it in style! Vovem is a stylish steakhouse with a modern urban décor and a wonderfully

126

relaxed and trendy vibe. Dark woods, stainless steel, glass windows, leather chairs and funky lighting, with an open kitchen, oak grill oven and all of its fresh produce on display – it’s both a culinary and visual work of art. The thing that hits you first is the smell! It’s out of this world! I’m not quite sure how they do this ‘oak grilling’ but it smells sensational. It reminds me of something between the Brazilian Churrascarias and Rodízios of my childhood holidays in South and Central America – and the up-andcoming smokehouse restaurants and brasseries in London. My mouth is watering and suddenly I can’t seem to remember why I even gave up meat in the first place! Although the interior is stunning (and smells divine!) we opt for a table outside on the decked terrace as it’s a balmy

spring evening and the outside area affords wonderful breezes (and a great opportunity for people watching!) Our starters arrive - a mesmerising explosion of colours, tastes and aromas, each dish prettier and more exquisitely presented than the next. First, Carpaccio with wild Edible Flowers and Vanilla Ice cream. Yes, you read that right; Meat with Flowers and Ice cream! This dish was not only a treat on the eyes, with pink, purple and lilac flowers scattered about the plate alongside delicate servings of ice cream, but it was also a culinary masterpiece! The salty cured beef was complemented beautifully with the sweet ice cream and some delicately chopped kiwi finished the dish off to perfection. Next came a Tuna Tartar, served with finely sliced Spring Onion and Guacamole.

COSTA CUISINE

Sauces and a selection of flavoured Sea Salts, which included Lemon, Charcoal and Mixed Herb Salts. After this veritable feast, I was after a pudding that was light and fruity, without being too heavy or rich – and Vovem’s delectable Cheesecake ticked all the boxes. Creamy and fluffy Vanilla Cheese topping on a buttery Biscuit base, served with mixed Red Berries and a Berry Coulis this delightful dessert was extraordinarily presented alongside a giant fluffy cloud – I took one mouthful of the airy white puff – and it dissolved upon my tongue – a wonderfully sweet and grown-up version of Candy Floss! It was perfect! Once again, the flavours were a perfect marriage and the texture of the tuna, which simply melted in my mouth, was heavenly. I was excitedly anticipating a heavy meat dish next, when out came the most delightful plate of fresh squid. This dish looked like ‘spring on a plate’ with emerald green garden peas and mange-touts drizzled in olive oil along with squid and its ink – it was a perfect melange of fresh sea and garden produce. And now for the piece de resistance – The Steak - For after all, this is what Vovem’s reputation is built upon and I’m eager to find out if the hype is real. From Rib Eyes to Sirloin and Tenderloin cuts, aged from 11 months (Veal steaks) to 48 or 52 months old, the selection of steaks to choose from is endless. For lovers of luxury, the Bodega, ‘El Capricho’ is considered, according to the New York Times, to be the best meat in the world, then there is the famed beef of Japan; Wagyu, a Japanese national breed of Ox cattle and of course the pure bred black beef – Kobe. Other cuts included the Rack of Veal, Fresian Picanha,

Ox Beef premium Picanha and even the Vovem hamburger. Our giant Rib-Eye Steak was served rare – just how I like it. Red in the middle and wonderfully charcoaled, almost caramelised on the outside. Served on a slate board and sprinkled with crushed sea salt, the magnificent cut of beef was not cooked to everyone’s liking – but alongside the Steak came a piping hot smoking griddle, and those who fancied their meat medium-rare or medium were able to cook their slices of beef to the optimum cuissant.

Now, I’m not saying that I’m renouncing vegetarianism and am becoming a fully fledged carnivore again, but let’s just say that if I fancy eating meat again anytime soon… I know where I’ll come! C/ Las Yedras, s/n C.C. Odeon, lc 9-10 Nueva Andalucia Tel. 952 00 34 34 vovemasador.com

To say that the meat was delicious is an understatement. It really was sensational and the fatty rind of this particular cut keeps the meat moist and so full of flavour – and I must confess to even devouring some of the crispy fat, which tasted like scrumptious salty Crackling! The meat was served with Pimientos de Padron, the local Baby Green Peppers that had had been cooked on the charcoal in the fat of the Meat, and thinly sliced Potatoes, much like Crisps. We were also offered a choice of many different types of Mustard and

This month D-wine sommelier Julio Garcia Valdes talks Barbate tuna steak and the best wines to pair with this delicious dish

WHAT A CATCH

D- WINE’S DISH OF THE MONTH

D-WINE’S ADVICE

Barbate is the tuna capital of Spain. Located in Cadiz, Southwest Spain, the highly prized red tuna fish has been caught here for more than 3,000 years. The ‘almadraba’, a system of long, deep nets created many years ago by the Phoenicians, is used to catch the fish and bring them to the surface. The fishing season is limited by the climate and takes place only during May and June when the bluefin tuna migrate from Northen Europe into the Mediterranean. There is still time in July to enjoy the wild red tuna steak, in fact tuna throughout this month is considered to be at its best – it has exactly the right amount of fat to make it one of the most coveted products among top chefs, who have paid high prices to buy the precious pieces and are serving up the best of the catch in their restaurants.

Grilled Tuna Steak from Barbate with Maki Rolls, Tempura Vegetables, Teriyaki Sauce & Ginger and Mango Coulis

Atlantic tuna lends itself to a light to medium bodied red wine with bright acidity and lavish fruit flavours. Northwestern Spanish reds are ideal options since they contain a more prominent acidity than other wines, making them good “fish reds.” Pinot Noir wines are also an excellent choice, renowned as the soulmate wine of tuna fish. If we look for higher acidity, lower tannins and moderate alcohol there are some grapes, regions and producers that can come into play for a perfect pairing with your tuna dish.

Top quality Barbate tuna steak is given a Japanese twist - tenderly grilled and served on a bed of teriyaki sauce - a glaze of soy sauce, sugar, ginger, garlic and seaweed - accompanied by sticky rice, lightly battered vegetable tempura and a sublime coulis of ginger and mango. The result: a meaty yet delicate dish of grilled tuna with sweet-sour and slightly spicy flavors.

Pinot Noir wines are an excellent choice, renowned as the soulmate wine of tuna fish.

THE HOTTEST SPOT

ON THE BLOCK! By Natalie Rose Kern

enture inland from the busy hustle bustle and bright lights of Puerto Banús, where designer boutiques and trendy nightclubs give way to sweeping golf greens, palm tree-lined avenues and large villas and, nestled in the heart of the Golf Valley, you’ll find the gastronomic hotspot of Nueva Andalucia. Along this trendy strip you’ll find a string of popular bars and restaurants, where local residents step out to wine and dine at some of the most stylish spots on the coast, removed from the tourist traps of the Puerto Banús and Marbella. Along this lively avenue discover an abundance of gourmet restaurants and elegant bars where the chic residents of Nueva Andalucia lap up the sun (or shelter in the shade) on the decked terraces over coffee or a glass of wine, watching the fashionable world go by. One of the newest bars on the block is the über-modern and super funky bar SIX, a fabulous sky lounge with plush velvet sofas and armchairs, sleek design features and a gorgeous use of light and space that makes it feel spacious and airy - yet cosy! It’s 9pm when I arrive and the sun is setting, flooding the bar with golden light. Cunning design allows for the glass windows along the front to slide away, giving the appearance of an open-air terrace and a gentle breeze flows through the bar. SIX is busy! There are a few tables of businessmen in suits having after-work drinks, there are glamorous couples at the bar, enjoying aperitifs, there is a large family table, relishing the last of

the sunshine over gin and tonics, before heading off, no doubt, to one of the fine eateries nearby and there is a group of pretty girls who look like they’re beginning an infamous ‘girls night out’. SIX is chic and stylish, without being pompous or pretentious. It’s beautifully furnished, with soft upholsteries in rich purples and golds and a mixture of comfy armchairs, tasteful loungers and tall bar stools (where the leggy ‘girls night out’ girls are elegantly perched). With glass walls, stainless steel and modern art, depicting a series of New York skylines, SIX is trendy and slick but comfortable enough for me to sink into an armchair with a book and relax. The staff are friendly and efficient, waiting tables, pouring drinks and chatting to the animated revellers propping up the bar. There’s a large circular aquarium in the middle, with stunning orange, turquoise and yellow tropical fish and, in one corner of the bar, there’s a water feature, with gushing water pouring out of the wall like a fountain, surrounded by a cleverly constructed wall garden. At the back, a floor to ceiling glass cabinet boasts a

marvellous selection of Champagnes and wines and, on the bar, a large bottle of Laurent Perrier rosé, that has just been opened, sits in a giant illuminated ice bucket with dry ice smoking from it. While I’ve been sitting here, a singer has been setting up for live music and she begins with a repertoire of bluesy soulful tunes - and it’s the perfect accompaniment to sunset drinks. SIX is decadent and delicious but relaxed enough to really have a good time. The businessmen are unwinding over lively conversations, the family are laid back and chatting happily, the groups at the bar are laughing cheerfully and the volume is slowly rising. As the sun sets and I leave the bar, with its swanky lighting and buzzing atmosphere, the singer speeds up the tempo and I know it won’t be long until the ‘girls night out’ girls are on their feet and dancing. Whether you’re popping in for a quick drink with a friend or a night out of revelry and entertainment – or whether you simply fancy curling up in the corner for a spot of people watching (like me!) SIX really is the hottest spot on the block! For reservations contact BAR SIX on Tel. 951 31 94 36

RESIDENCIAL DUQUESA BUILDS UP TO

THE FINISH LINE Leading real estate agency Bromley Estates Marbella has joined forces with Spanish property developer Neinor Homes to become the exclusive promoter for the final phase of this sought after development Residencial Duquesa. Coming soon, amongst much anticipation, Bromley Estates Marbella will shortly release all 96 luxury apartments on to the market for sale, and open the show apartments for viewings. The scarcity of apartments in such a coveted location - 5 minutes’ walk from Duquesa Marina and the beach - and the low starting price of just 142,000€ (+IVA) is already attracting considerable interest. This is a sure sign that as soon as the units are available they will be snapped up quickly. When approached by Neinor Homes, Bromley Estates Marbella recognised the desirability and value for money represented by these high quality 2 bedroom apartments and penthouses, both as investment and lifestyle properties. The high spec finish, generous private outdoor space, and the option of mountain and sea views are only half of the story. It’s also the close proximity to the port and easy access to beaches, golf and Sabinillas that make these residencies so appealing. Bromley Estates Marbella Directors are also involved in another great investment opportunity at extremely affordable prices. The company’s appointment as the sole agent for Residencial Duquesa comes hot on the heels of its hugely successful marketing campaign for another fantastic development in Benalmádena, Benalmadena Hill Views, and it is expected to generate the same level of interest. Hayley Bromley, Director stated, “We’re thrilled to be asked to promote such an exciting project. Brand new apartments of this calibre with the option of mountain and sea views, parking, storage, and landscaped gardens in a great

location are few and far between. In addition, the cost of living in the Duquesa port area is considerably lower than around the Costa del Sol’s more famous marinas such as Sotogrande and Puerto Banús, making it a win-win situation for anyone looking for an affordable sunshine lifestyle.” info@residencial-duquesa.es Tel: + 34 952 939 460

On Sunday evening the Butterfly Children Ball was opened with the beautiful sounds of the wonderful TAPAS Choir in the magical setting of the club terrace overlooking the 18th green. After a delicious 3-course meal there was a successful raffle and an exciting auction, where bids over 7.000€ were made for items such as a signed Ryder Cup Flag donated by Miguel Angel Jimenez and a luxury weekend at Marbella Club Hotel. Funds raised at this event will be dedicated to improving the lives of Butterfly Children and their families throughout Spain via projects such as The Marbella Respite Home or Hospital and Home visits by our Health Professional Team who are at hand whenever a baby is born with this condition anywhere in Spain. debra.es

Last month the exclusive Don Carlos Resort & Spa reopened the doors of its beach club to unveil a whole new look for the glamorous beachside area. With its re-designed, newly extended swimming pool, as well as the creation of two chic VIP zones, Orange Beach Club is going to be one of the hottest spots on the Coast this summer to catch those rays of sunshine. The menu has also received a makeover; specialising particularly in seafood, it offers a selection of authentic Spanish dishes such as Lobster Paella and King Prawn Paella, as well as a long list of refreshing cocktails like ‘Raspblue’, ‘Frutti Beach’ and the special house cocktail ‘Orange Beach Club’. With the perfect background music, uninterrupted views of the sea and a delicious array of drinks and dishes to enjoy, the Orange Beach Club is a fantastic option to soak up those summer vibes. Open from now until October. Doncarlosresort.com

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

FREUDENHAUS t’s hard to believe that our favourite cocktail spot opened just one year ago - we can’t even imagine Puerto Banus without the oh so hip Freudenhaus bar. Freudenhaus open their doors on the 4th July to celebrate their one year anniversary and it’s set to be an unforgettable night. With live music and the cocktail bar’s resident DJs making an appearance playing the coolest old school funky house tracks, there is no better to place to party on this Saturday in July. Neither trashy nor pretentious, the vibe here is stylish and effortlessly cool. Watch out for our favourite Freudenhaus tipples - the Ginger Beam Martini and the Lavender Pisco Sour! Congratulations on a hugely successful year Freudenhaus, your bar is the hottest spot in town and long may it continue. Freudenhaus Avda. Jose Banus, Urb. Jardines del Puerto 6, Puerto Banus. THE ULTIMATE CELEBRITY HAUNT Footballer Ashley Cole, who plays for Italian club Roma, enjoyed a night out in La Sala, Puerto Banus last month with a group of friends. The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender is a regular at the busy supper spot, having visited the restaurant on numerous occasions in the past few years. Cole thoroughly enjoyed the experience once again and promised to return soon. The sports personality was not the only celebrity to pass through the doors of La Sala Banus last month. TOWIE stars Bobby Norris and Lauren Pope were also spotted enjoying signature Sala starter plates such as Prawns Pil Pil and Crispy Duck Rolls before tucking into a Chateaubriand and Spaghetti Vongole. International Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua also headed to La Sala last month. As he enjoyed his dinner and drinks, the British professional boxer was entertained by one of Sala’s resident live singers Zoe Louise, even performing a rap with the trained vocalist!
