Merrry Christmas to you all! The SOCIETY MARBELLA team would like to thank you for all of your support throughout the year, whether you have advertised your business on our pages or merely picked up a copy to read with your coffee. We would like to give each and every one of you something for Christmas, but even with the assistance of gift s suggestions contained within these page we what so ble, possi be not t that migh have done is provide you with more than 20 pages of celebrity news, style and fashion. Our real Christmas Cracker this year is the Jessie J interview; this is one woman who has an opinion about everything and isn’t shy about telling you what she thinks, either! This five-star interviewee is one of s Britain’s hottest pop acts and sales figure ng looki are , Alive m, for her latest albu very healthy indeed. Jessie has already announced that she is giving up her role as a judge on The Voice to focus on her career, so 2014 looks as though it will be her year. With an American tour lined up for February and March, we are glad that we managed to pin her down before the USA discovers that unique Jessie J charm. If you are as bad at dreaming up the perfect Christmas gift for that awkward friend or relative as we are, then you will be very interested in what jewellery expert, Lucy Barnes from Anthony’s Diamonds has to say on the subject.

Now, if you ask me what I want for Christmas I would have to point you to Ian Kuah’s review of the Novitec Rosso F12 & N-Largo. If you’re feeling especially generous then that is exactly what I would like to see in my stocking on Christmas morning – a lovely, seasonal red one will do nicely, thank you. Well, I can dream, can’t I? Of course, Christmas is party time and what would the festive season be without a long line of ladies queuing outside their local beautician? Developments in the beauty business mean that new treatments are being added all the time so we asked our very own Nicola McGeorge to investigate; her report contains all the info that you could possibly need to ensure that you hit the yuletide party circuit in fine form. Also the former Miss Hungary, Korinna Kocsis, tells us what she loves about Marbella and Padre Peter tells us where t Santa really came from – just don’t forge glass a and pies e minc those him to leave of sherry, will you? We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful Christmas and hope that 2014 will be a good one for all of us. See you next year... Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month SOCIETY MARBELLA speaks to jessie j about doing it her way

JessieJ By Amber O’Shaughnessy

Ex star judge of The Voice, talks about leaving the hit TV show, her new album and her ability to SCH-ING as well as sing! Were you nervous about the new album? Yeah, because the first album is about ‘Why are you here?’ but the second is, ‘Why should you stay here?’ and I was more nervous about that. With the second one people have preconceptions, they have songs that they really like that they want to hear again, they have opinions of you, and they have expectations of you. But I’ve actually enjoyed the experience much more than I thought I would. It’s nice to get to know your voice again. It’s like being a chef and always cooking the same meals then branching out into baking. It’s nice to feel you’re exploring another piece of yourself. And I’m excited about pushing myself on stage. This second album is much harder to sing than the first one but I like a challenge. The reaction to ‘Wild’, the first single from the new album, was amazing, wasn’t it? Amazing! Bearing in mind it wasn’t a normal single, it just came out when the video came out… there was no pre-promo, no six-week build-up and it went top five! I just wanted my fans to have something before everyone else got it. I wanted to see the power of music without all the social media and press and it was a new way of doing it. I didn’t want the music stations and all that to get it before the fans did. It took a lot of convincing to get it through but it went to number one in four countries, so the reaction was great. I couldn’t be happier. What’s your favourite track on the new album? It’s the same one as all the journalists liked actually. It’s called ‘Daydreaming’ and it’s a real 80s throwback. Prince meets Whitney. Very feel-good. I’m really proud of the album but this one I wrote on my own and it was about someone I liked and I wanted them to notice me.

16

It was an exaggeration of a real feeling I had. I said to someone who listened to the album for the first time the other day, ‘What words would you use to describe it?’ and they said, ‘Positive, light, honest, anthemic…’ and they’re all words that I really hope describe it. I feel like it really represents me. Are there no sad songs? There are a few that are quite emotional but there’s one song on there that is so sad I don’t know if I’ll be able to sing it live. It’s called “And I Miss Her” about a family member who’s not very well. The song is basically about when you have someone you love who’s ill and it’s like they are gone even though they are still there, if that makes sense. The way it strips them of who they are but they’re still there. It’s just very personal. How much of the album did you write yourself? Everything. I was part of everything. Four songs I wrote on my own and on the others I was with Claude Kelly and there’s a song on there called “Breathe” that I wrote with Sia in New York: she did the melody with me and I did the lyrics. I’ve worked with some incredible people. I like working with people in the studio because then you can get to know each other. In the studio people see me in a different way and that’s really important. You’re famous as a bit of a team player… It’s important. When I’m on my tour, I always make a point of going out and saying thank you to everyone packing away. You’re not the star. It’s about something you’re doing all together. You have to remember it’s not all about you. What other favourites do you have on the new album?

There’s a song called “Gold” that is about someone making you feel like gold, whether it’s my fans, my family, my friends. It’s just really feel-good. A lot of the songs are very feel-good. Is that because you’re in a good place in your life? Yeah, it is. I am in a really good place in my life. I feel like there’s nothing that I’m craving and I think that’s always a very good thing. I feel very balanced at the moment, which is great. There’s another song called “Thunder”… “when I’m feeling down, you lift me up”. I feel like there are a lot of songs for couples. But there’s one on there called “Excuse My Rude”, which is basically about someone who was in my life but not anymore. That’s the dirtiest track, really grimey. I’m going to enjoy singing that one live. So, why did you leave The Voice? Forget the emotional side of things, they sent me over the diary and they needed me for 42 days and for 40 of them I was on tour. And I can’t be replaced on my tour. I don’t think people would appreciate a look-a-like coming out. I was gutted, really gutted but my tour is way more important and I have to prioritise that. I’m looking forward to watching it as a fan now to see it how other people see it. And I just hope they get people who put the time and energy into it that we did. I’ve warmed up the chair and I know that I’m going to be a bit miffed when I see it not to be there. Since your last album, you had the massive Olympics performance, didn’t you? It was amazing! I was the only person who performed twice other than Emeli Sandé. As I was walking up that catwalk it was like I’d reached that moment where I’d watched people like Beyoncé do that when I was 14 and 15 and I was

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

“I want to be normal but with a little extra special”

determined to enjoy every minute of it. I just came off shaking with excitement. What have your other highlights been since the first album took off? Glastonbury always sticks out for me because I had my broken foot but the minute I stepped out the sun came out. And all the amazing charity stuff I’ve done this year. From the little things no one knows about to the big stuff like shaving my hair for Comic Relief. I’ve always had a soft spot for children who are sick because at one point in my life, I was in Great Ormond Street with a heart problem and I understand, I can relate to it. I remember being there for tests a lot and knowing that Baby Spice was in the building and praying that she would know you wanted to see her. Your look has always been a really strong part of who you are, hasn’t it? At the moment I have no stylist. I don’t want to be a cartoon character anymore. I sometimes look back and think, ‘Who’s idea was that?’ I want to be normal but with a little extra special. I know my fashions now. I do my homework, go shopping... No stylist!? I’ve controlled everything on this. The covers, I’ve picked Rankin to do the photography, I’ve chosen my video director, I’ve written the treatment, the pictures that go in the sleeve, the track listing, it’s all me. I’m a control freak. [Laughs] And I should be in control. It’s my baby and I don’t like it when I’m not in control!

All of us on the SOCIETY MARBELLA team turned into screaming groupies when we heard that the group who used to adorn our bedroom walls as teenagers was coming to Spain. Kevin, Howie D, Nick, A.J. and Brien Littrell of Backstreet Boys presented their new album ‘In A World Like This’ at the Palace Hotel, in Madrid. They have reunited to celebrate 20 years of boy-band magic and glory. During the media interviews Brian admitted that they are in Real Madrid star Gareth Bale continues his bromance with Ronaldo. Two notorious British paedophiles linked to Madeleine McCann’s abduction have refused to be questioned by Spanish police who are probing them over the disappearance of a Spanish schoolboy. Guardia Civil detectives flew to Scotland to quiz killers Charles O’Neill, 50 and William Lauchlan, 36 in prison about the missing boy, Yeremi Vargas, who disappeared six years ago. The suspects, from Largs near Glasgow, were questioned two years ago in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance. The men were jailed for life in 2010 for abducting a 15-year-old and murdering a mother who had threatened to expose their abuse of boys. The Spanish police’s attempts to persuade Ewan Wilson, another acquaintance of theirs, to answer questions about Yeremi’s disappearance over six years ago also failed. Guardia Civil chiefs revealed they are now treating all three men as suspects as part of a new line of inquiry into the disappearance of Yeremi.

Britain is to summon Spain’s ambassador after what it described as a “provocative incursion” into Gibraltar’s territorial waters by a Spanish vessel, in the latest round of the war of words over the British outpost. The Ramon Margalef, a 50 metre long vessel belonging to Spain’s Oceanographic Research Institute, entered Gibraltar’s territorial waters last month and spent the next 20 hours slowly moving up and down the coastline of Gibraltar, lowering probes from its deck to the seabed. It ignored repeated radio calls by a British Navy patrol boat to cease its activity which constituted a “violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” the government of Gibraltar said.

The Europe minister, David Lidington, said: “I strongly condemn this provocative incursion and urge the Spanish government to ensure that it

Several thousand people gathered at Madrid’s central Plaza de Colone to protest the early release of imprisoned Basque separatists convicted of terror attacks. The protest was organized by Spain’s largest terrorism victims association, the AVT, which describes itself as “the last bulwark of democratic dignity in Spain.” The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights found that prisoners who had served time and completed sentence reduction programs couldn’t have their jail terms reinterpreted by Spain’s judiciary. The court’s decision centred on the case of Ines del Rio Prada, who was sentenced in 1987 to a total of 3,828 years for multiple terror attacks carried out as a member of the armed Basque group ETA. The attacks she took part in killed a total of 24 people.

is not repeated. We stand ready to do whatever is required to protect Gibraltar’s sovereignty, economy and security.”

Aguirre and Euro Deputy, Jaime Mayor Oreja.

“As a result of this ruling, I have to assume that ETA has achieved its objectives,” said Alfonso Sanchez, 47, wounded in a 1985 ETA bomb blast. “All I want is for the law to be enforced and respected, and that we should honour the memory and dignity of the victims. The ruling Popular Party (PP) sent some of its top officials to the march. Leading party members included Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, former Madrid regional Premier Esperanza

“We have given up on any type of revenge out of faith in the rule of law, and all we ask of the state is one thing: justice, complete and in capital letters,” said AVT president Ángeles Pedraza. “ETA assassinated my father when I was only 15 years old,” said Ms Maite Araluce, addressing crowds waving Spanish flags and chanting “justice”. “Now we have to see these murderers walk free, smiling! I don’t want revenge but I also don’t want them to enjoy what they have stolen from us.”

I

On Christmas Night

n 1823 a poem appeared called “A visit from Saint Nicholas”. In many parts of Europe children receive their presents on the feast of Saint Nicholas, the 6th December. Over the years Saint Nicholas has degenerated into “Santa Claus” from the Dutch corruption of “Saint Nikolaos” into “Sinterklaas”. He was a fourth

century bishop of Myra (now Demre in Turkey), who developed a reputation for giving secret gifts to those whom he knew to be in need. It is doubtful

that he ever employed a team of flying reindeer, but in the 1823 poem they even had names: Donder and Blixem (thunder and lightning – which is also the name of a delicious dish consisting of mashed potato and apple! who eventually became Donner and Blitzen, Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, and Comet and Cupid. When a Christmas song, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” hit the charts in 1939, Rudolph got added to the list. And herein lies a problem. Whilst both male and female reindeers sport antlers during the summer months, when winter comes the males shed them. Thus, every popular picture of Santa riding through the sky has him led by a team of nine proudly antlered females! And in 1823 he would have been garbed in green, and wearing a holly wreath upon his head.

In the 1920s, however, CocaCola decided to use Santa in Christmas advertising. It be-

came necessary for him to be clothed in the company’s colours, and so the (by now) traditional red costume was born. His sleigh must be pretty large, as if your true love sent you all the items mentioned in “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, you would receive no fewer than three hundred and sixty four gifts. It has been estimated that the total cost, including the hire of the people involved, would be in the region of 20,000€. In the western Church and those Orthodox Churches which have adopted the modern Gregorian calendar, Christmas Day falls on the

By Padre Peter

25th December. This was decided by Pope Julius I (d. 352 AD). Twelfth Night is the subject of some controversy, but the Oxford Dictionary defines it as “the evening of the fifth of January, preceding Twelfth Day, the eve of the Epiphany, formerly the last day of the Christmas festivities and observed as a time of merrymaking”. Nowadays, however, The Feast of the Epiphany, January 6th, is often regarded as “Twelfth Night”, when decorations should be taken down. Those Orthodox Churches which still adhere to the old “Julian” calendar, which has a difference of thirteen days with the Gregorian variety, celebrate Christmas on the modern January 7th, with the Epiphany on January 19th. This is the day upon which the Magi (Three Kings) visited the infant Christ. Christmas as it is celebrated today in the United Kingdom and the States was largely the creation of Charles Dickens who, in 1843, spent eight weeks writing “A Christmas Carol”. It was also in this year that the first Christmas card was sent on the 9th December. Albert, the beloved Prince Consort of Queen Victoria, introduced the Christmas tree to Britain from Germany where, from the 16th century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes, following an ancient tradition. It is fortunate that Oliver Cromwell was not still around. In 1647 his parliament abolished Christmas Day and made the eating of mince pies and Christmas puddings illegal on the grounds that they are a sign of gluttony, and the practice of feasting and decorating to be pagan in nature. The ban was lifted in 1660 on the accession of Charles II but, by one of those quirks of the English law, it is to this day

illegal to eat mince pies in England, although they are permit-

ted in Wales and Scotland!

Cromwell’s strictures on Christmas celebrations arose from the fact that they stem from a number of different roots; Christian, pre-Christian and secular. The Christian roots are fairly obvious, even in a post-Christian society. The

story is told in the first chapter of Saint Matthew’s gospel, and the first and second chapters of Saint Luke. The feeding trough, or manger, is mentioned only by Saint Luke, and the “stable” was probably a cave. By the time the Magi arrived, the Holy Family had moved to a house. The “star” which they followed has given rise to a number of theories, none of which is very plausible on close examination. It is perhaps best to leave the final explanation to Saint John Chrysostom (c347-407 AD) who decided that it was, quite simply, miraculous and fittingly marked the birth of the Saviour to a young maiden. Christmas decorations have a long history, and the use of holly and ivy pre-date the birth of Christ. Naturally, their use has become Christianised, with holly, originally seen as

a protection against witches, now coming to signify the blood of Christ and the crown of thorns. The use of mis-

tletoe remains an out-and-out pagan custom, and harks back to the Druids, to whom the plant was a sacred symbol of life. Saint Francis of Assisi popularised the use of the Christmas crib, with its depiction of animals at the manger. And when Albert arrived with his Christmas tree, he was following a Germanic custom dating back to the seventh century. The oak tree was sacred to Thor, the pagan god of thunder. When Saint Boniface (born Wynfrith in Crediton in 657 AD) arrived as a missionary in Germany, he took an axe and chopped down the sacred oak, saying that the fir tree was a far better symbol as it pointed to heaven and its triangular shape better illustrated the Holy Trinity. The red, green and gold colours so associated with this celebration stand for the red of Christ’s redemptive blood, the green stands for the evergreen of the fir tree, and the gold is a symbol of royalty. Mulled wine and mince pies, of course, stand for hospitality and warmth, whatever Oliver Cromwell might have thought!

A GIFT OF

Love

Buying jewellery as a gift can be a difficult process. Whether you are looking for some practical advice or just a few ideas, our expert, Lucy Barnes from Anthony Diamonds, offers her tips on how to choose the perfect piece of jewellery and answers some of our readers’ questions. What are the current trends in jewellery? Everything goes at the moment. Big diamonds, three carats plus, are selling well as people don’t trust the banks, so they are investing in diamonds.

What are your bestsellers? The modern day woman likes traditional solitaire stud earrings, solitaire rings and line bracelets. They are simple, yet timeless.

How does Anthony’s Diamonds keep up to date with the changing trends in jewellery? We pride ourselves on staying ahead of the trends, so we buy with an eye on the fashion, celebrity and jewellery markets to spot any emerging trends. This is why our clients continue to return to us.

Which style should I go for when buying a Christmas gift for my girlfriend? Any man thinking of buying jewellery should have a good feel for his girlfriend’s taste; listen when she points out what she does and doesn’t like. Does she lean towards simple and elegant or is her look bold and flamboyant? Does she prefer sterling silver, platinum or yellow gold? Does she like petite or bold size styles? If possible, look through her jewellery box to get an idea of her tastes. Be thoughtful. It’s not about the money you can spend, nor the jewellery you would like to see her wear. Ask yourself what this gift will mean to her. As Christmas Day fades away, will she still wear your gift or will it wind up in the drawer with all the other jewellery that just didn’t fit her personality or style? Which metals and gemstones should I choose? Observe which pieces she wears most often and take note of the colour of the metal and the stones which feature most prominently: 1. Is her favourite jewellery white gold, yellow gold or rose gold? Whichever colour she wears the most will be the safest option for a present.

26

2. Does she favour diamonds, pearls, or gemstones? If she has a lot of jewellery with gems, which colours does she prefer? Choose jewellery which incorporates her favoured gems and colours. What if, despite everything, it’s not quite right? In the event that the item isn’t quite right, or if it doesn’t fit, you can return it to us and we will be happy to offer you an exchange, providing the goods are returned in perfect condition and in their original packaging. You can basically choose anything that we have, as it is our policy to make our customers happy. If your girlfriend doesn’t like it we will exchange it and work with you until she is happy. My teenage daughter wants statement jewellery - any ideas? If your daughter wants a brand name we have plenty of watches such as Cartier and Rolex etc. If it’s statement earrings that she is after (which are very on trend for teenagers at the moment), we have a wide selection to

I want to give my six year-old niece her first piece of jewellery for Christmas, something which she will treasure. What would you advise? We have beautiful diamond crosses for young girls with an invisible setting, they are simply gorgeous. I bought one for my own daughter when she was born. I want to buy my mum something really unusual to guarantee no one else will buy her the same thing. Well you can always design something and have it specially made, then it will be a one off. I want to buy my husband a watch for Christmas but I have no idea about what is in fashion? Designer watches are very popular

choose from. If you come down and see us we will work with you to find her the perfect gift I am going to propose at Christmas. What type of engagement ring would you recommend? An engagement ring traditionally boasts a central stone either on its own or surrounded by other, smaller stones. Popular stones for engagement rings include diamonds and rubies, which are some of the hardest stones. I always recommend opting for a nice clean stone, with the three Cs, namely good clarity, good colour and good cut. When buying an engagement ring, it’s worth bearing in mind what kind of wedding ring you will want to go with it, so you can make sure they will fit together and complement each other.

particularly the Daytona Rolex, Submariner Rolex or the Audemars Piguet What can I buy for the woman who has everything? An even bigger diamond? I think any jewellery gift is appreciated when it comes from someone you love. I want to buy my girlfriend something really special but I am struggling financially. We have bargain trays of rings at really reasonable prices, so we will find something for everyone. I think it’s important that a gift comes from the heart, because the ladies want something that says I love you. There’s nothing that conveys that sentiment to a woman louder and clearer than jewellery. Look for quality in design and

workmanship, no matter what the price range; most importantly, buy only what you love. What is your personal favourite style of jewellery? My favourite style of jewellery is emerald cut diamonds. I just love them. Anthony Diamonds Avda. Ramon y Cajal No 40, Fuengirola, Málaga Tel. 952 588 795 / 609 529 633 anthonys-diamonds.com

You may be bored of hearing about her after all of her antics over the summer but unfortunately for Miley Cyrus, as she has been busy performing her new singles and twerking all over the world, her house has been broken into. As the singer’s 21st birthday preparations were underway last month, the star and all of her team were away from the L.A property when it was burgled and many personal items were stolen. Police are now looking into the burglary but it’s not the first time the star has had her house broken into. In September of 2012, while Miley was away working, a knife wielding intruder startled employees at her home who quickly called the police and the man was arrested.

Vinny Jones and his

last month and, although it is hosted by that wonderful duo, Ant and Dec, it will unfortunately be on our screens for a little while longer. The participating ‘celebrities’ consist of television actors, sports stars, a fashion designer, a reality TV star, a singer and Miss Universe contestant, most of whose lagging careers need boosting. Unfortunately, aside from the few that have come across really well in the jungle, most previous contestants have not found themselves in a better career position than when they went in.

wife are both sadly battling skin cancer. The couple, who have lived in the US for many years since Vinny’s film career took off, have had several lumps removed in the last few months. The football turned movie star, first found a lump in February beneath his eye which doctors said was cancerous. Doctors removed the lump but just a few months later, Jones found more and they have also since been removed and the star said he is going to fight the disease with everything he has got but blames the cancer on their outdoor lifestyle in L.A. Sadly, in a cruel twist of fate, his wife also found lumps over the past few years, and it is thought by doctors that these could be a result of the medication she has taken since a heart transplant 26 years. It seems that the star and his wife are not the only ones who have found lumps on their skin lately as just a few weeks ago, The X Men star, Hugh Jackman tweeted a picture of his nose in a bandage following a small operation to have a lump removed.

Society Marbella brings you all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood

Actor Charlie Sheen has not had the best of times in the last few years and unfortunately it seems his bad behaviour is having a terrible effect on his children with wild child Brooke Mueller. With Brooke herself going through rehab and battling with drugs, their twin boys were taken in by Sheen’s ex-wife and mother to his three girls, Denise Richards, but sadly she had to call child services after the boys started acting violently towards the girls. With

Sheen trying his hardest and spending time with the boys, it seemed as soon as their mother got back in contact after rehab they started acting up. The boys are now living with Brooke’s brother and Sheen has been denied access by the family. Unfortunately for this warring family, while all they want is to spend time with the boys, it looks as though all they are doing is damaging the impressionable youngsters.

Model Miranda

Kerr and actor Orlando Bloom have sadly called

time on their marriage. The pair, who have vowed to remain friends for the sake of their son, two year-old Flynn, have been together for six years. While Orlando is known for his many big screen movie roles, Miranda is a supermodel who has graced the catwalk for the likes of Victoria’s Secret and Roberto Cavalli. The beautiful couple were originally thought to be just taking a break but Orlando has now moved out of their apartment and Miranda has been seen enjoying dinner dates with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Another marriage to show strain last month was that of Will Smith and Jaden Pinkett-Smith who have been married for 16 years. Amid reports the marriage was apparently under strain, pictures emerged of 45 year-old Will with his co-star, 23 year-old Margot Robbie in a photo booth taking very flirty pictures together. The Men in Black star has managed to fight off robots, defeat evil and protect the earth in many of his films but we’re just not sure how he will get out of this one. Will and Jada have denied they are splitting and have even been seen out together in Vegas, but the truth surrounding those pictures remains to be seen.

Society Marbella brings you the best of this month’s action, horror, romance and comedy.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Peter Jackson looks set to triumph again with the second instalment in The Hobbit series. The complete cast returns, with Martin Freeman once again portraying Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with Gandalf the Wizard and the thirteen dwarves on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. If you haven’t seen the first film but were a fan of The Lord of The Rings then make sure to view the DVD of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey before heading to the cinema to see this action packed thriller. The third instalment will be released next year.

Grudge Match Two of Hollywood’s heavyweights (excuse the pun) star in this sports action film about two retired boxers who are drawn out of retirement for one final match against each other. Billy ‘The Kid’ McDonnen and Henry ‘Razor’ Sharp were rivals for the entirety of their careers and have been persuaded, for one fight only, to come out of retirement and reignite the feud that may have ended both their fighting careers many years before. The media frenzy that surrounds their new fight suddenly makes the fight bigger than it should be and if they can survive the training they will be facing the fight of their lives. Cast: Robert DeNiro, Sylvester Stallone, Kim Basinger

Walking with Dinosaurs 3D The 1999 BBC mini-series proved a smash hit with audiences and now directors Neil Nightingale and Barry Cook have made a spectacular movie in 3D based on that series. Featuring computer animated dinosaurs in live-action settings the film is set in the late Cretaceous period 70 million years ago. A film for both adults and children, it makes for the perfect Christmas family film and there will even be a dinosaur thesaurus released this month to accompany the film.

THE WRAP

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues… The popular film Anchorman returns this December with much hilarity and the original cast from the first movie, alongside some of Hollywood’s hottest names. When the original team is brought together, including Ron Burgundy’s wife Veronica and best pals Brian and Brick, to host a 24 news channel, they have to take it all in their stride, keep things classy and weather every storm… something none of them are used to. Cast: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Harrison Ford, Greg Kinnear Cameos: Nicole Kidman, Kanye West, Liam Neeson… and many, many more!

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Walter Mitty works at Life Magazine and has an unfulfilling life, padding it out with a mental world of fantasy, romanticism and action. When his job that he treasures at Life Magazine is threatened he must embark on a real journey around the world that gives him an adventure more exciting and extraordinary than he could ever have hoped or imagined. Featuring some of Hollywood’s funniest actors, this comedy also tugs at the heart strings. Cast: Ben Stiller, Adam Scott, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine

34

Saving Mr Banks When Walt Disney promised his two young daughters that he would make their favourite novel, Mary Poppins, into a film, he never quite realised how hard it would be and how long it would take him. With a stellar cast, this film explores Disney’s relentless quest to obtain the rights to the book from the author P.L Travers and the ultimate journey to set Mary Poppins and all of Travers’s characters free in a film that would change both of their lives. Cast: Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Hanks, Ruth Wilson, Rachel Griffiths.

Introducing SOCIETY MARBELLA’s favourite tracks set to hit the charts this month.

Britney Jean by Britney Spears The upcoming eighth studio album from pop star Britney Spears is to be released this month and the recording artist has described it as her most personal album to date, saying that she has drawn on emotions and experiences from the past few years to create it. She collaborated with many artists and producers on the album, including Will.I.Am and Sia Furler, to achieve the overall sound that she wanted. As it is such a personal album, the singer wanted the name to be something close to her heart as well so she chose the nickname that her family affectionately gave her when she was small.

Singles

Black Panties by R Kelly R&B singer R Kelly releases his twelfth studio album this month and the singer says that although it will be completely different from previous albums, it is the “new 12 Play” which was his debut album in 1993. Featuring guest appearances from 2 Chainz, Future and Ludacris, the album is sure to be a hit with fans. The first single on the album, My Story, was released in July and peaked at number eight on the US billboard charts while the second single, Genius was released in September.

THE SPIN

Christmas, With Love by Leona Lewis Leona Lewis releases a Christmas album on December 2nd and it’s an album many of her fans won’t expect. Leona was classically trained, which many don’t know, and the album showcases that side of her voice. With songs including her new track, One More Sleep, as well as Mr Right and Your Hallelujah, Leona brings her personal style to many of the songs. She co-wrote all three of the original tracks and has recorded festive classics including Winter Wonderland and White Christmas for the album as well. With her own version of Ave Maria and songs in Latin as well, this album is sure to fly off the shelves during the festive season.

RELEASED THIS MONTH Susan Boyle released an album earlier this year entitled Home for Christmas and this month her much anticipated version of O Come All Ye Faithful, featuring vocals from the late Elvis Presley, will be available. Our gorgeous covergirl Jessie J releases the third single from her album Alive this month and the song, Thunder, is sure to be a hit just like the previous singles. Allegedly written in under an hour, Thunder is under a lot of pressure to capture fans’ imagination. Unfortunately - or if you’re a fan then fortunately - the stars of ITV2’s The Big Reunion are releasing a cover of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday. The singers from the groups, Blue, 5ive (who really should rename themselves 4our as one of the members dropped out), Liberty

Many of this year’s bestselling chart performers are releasing singles this month and we’ve got the lowdown on what to listen out for and download.

X, Atomic Kitten and B*witched are hoping to grab the number one spot during the festive season with their cover of Wizzard’s original fan favourite.

Línea Directa reports on driving in winter Línea Directa is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions.

With respect to the car:

With respect to driving:

• Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels.

• If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds.

• Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm. • Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency.

• If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding. • Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity. • When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

The Makeup MASTER CLASS Text by Nicola McGeorge / Photos by Ruth Jones

Each month Nicola McGeorge takes you behind the scenes at one of the leading fashion and photographic make-up courses in Spain.

S

ince my last diary entry so much has happened - too much to fit it all in really. We have two new students Georgia and Elna. Poor Elna’s initiation into the class consisted of me attacking her with makeup while trying to create a day look. Just a little tip ladies, Urban Decay’s NAKED palette is perfect for this look. During this particular session, our teacher, Faye Kilcourse shared one of her pro secrets with us which, I have to say, has completely changed how I apply makeup. Instead of trying to keep ’ ok o l everything y da neat while working on The ‘ the eye area, just slap on the makeup and then tidy up afterwards. By running a cotton bud with a little eye makeup remover from the outer corner

of the eye in a diagonal line towards the end of your brow, not only do you clean up any excess shadow but you also create the perfect line for the cat eye effect. Clever huh? I finally got my hands on my new brushes from Sigma and I cannot get over what a difference they make. I know everyone bangs on about how you should invest in good tools, but it’s only when you actually get to play with quality brushes that you realise how key they are to achieving flawless makeup. The standard of my work jumped up a notch from one day to the next. The only difference was the brushes. Not being someone who is good at anything hair related, I

lesson by showing us how to create GHD curls, something that looks so simple, yet I found it really difficult to achieve. After three demonstrations and plenty of, “Are you actually watching what I am doing?” comments from Alex, I finally created the perfect curl.We were then paired off and each given a training head to practise on, which totally freaked me out, since ‘she’ was like something from a horror film. My partner, Katie naming her Bob didn’t help matters either. Sadly Bob was tortured for hours on end and if she had been a real client I think she would have sued. Not only did most of her hair fall out, at one point she actually started smoking. Yes, I

finished up looking like the devil after we had sprayed her red and black (my handy work ended up giving her a beard) while Zoe was turned into the Incredible Hulk. Although I loved the experience I don’t feel airbrushing is for me. My favourite session so far had to be our fantasy class, where we were given free rein to create any look we wanted, as long as dramatic eyeliner, creative lips, false lashes and embellishments of some kind were involved. My inspiration came from Make Up For Ever’s ‘Midnight Glow’ campaign, but with a gothic twist. Thankfully everything went to plan (mostly), the icy blue smokey eye, the black doll lips, even the diamantes stayed put. Then came the false lashes! I managed to drop one on the floor and was about to stick it onto the model eye, when Faye swooped in with a pair of tweezers, grabbed it from me, disinfected it and then reapplied the glue before handing it back. I told you she was strict. Just as I was finishing the look, one of the lashes popped off, making the model look like I had stuck a squashed spider to her eye. I went into full panic mode, while Faye just breezed over, applied glue to the flat end of my tweezers and gently reapplied the lash. To finish the look, I added black extensions to the model’s hair and some volume to create a quiff and then tied it back into a messy ponytail.

admit I may have left the curling wand on for too long. After learning how to create retro curls, braiding and fish plaits, Bob finally had enough and committed suicide by falling off her clamp. The talented Maria Arana kindly visited to demonstrate airbrushing and body painting. She really went to town and created an Avatar style design, using layering techniques to create a contouring effect. It really was something of a spectacle to watch. I loved her glitter tip of creating a shape on the body with hairspray and then blowing your choice of glitter onto it. When it was our turn, Zoe and Katie volunteered to be the guinea pigs. Katie

The lovely thing about the fantasy class was that each student had interpreted the brief in a completely different way. There was a neon, abstract look, a pink candyfloss extravaganza, gold leafing and even a take on the Black Swan. Faye was like a proud mother hen. Although the course is only one day a week, Faye makes sure that we continue our studies at home. We are expected to keep a sketch book full of our ideas and inspirations and to practise whatever task we have been set at home. So it has become the norm to see me to be walking around the house with bright blue lips or vampy eye makeup, while the other half just rolls his eyes and tells me I look like a heroin addict. To which I always reply, “It’s called art darling - something you wouldn’t understand.” Yes, I think we have a diva makeup artist in the making.

THE QUEEN of

Beauty

SOCIETY MARBELLA chats with the former Miss Hungary, Korinna Kocsis about her latest venture, Look Your Best

Hi Korinna, welcome to Marbella. Tell us a little about yourself. I was born on May 24th 1991 in Hungary. I am a model and ex beauty queen and have just set up a fitness and lifestyle studio in Puerto Banús. When did you first come here? The first time was four years ago, when I came to relax in Marbella as a gift after winning the Miss Hungary title. Since then, I’ve been here so many times, I cannot even count. I simply love to be here, it’s like my second home. What brings you to Marbella? Actually, we were looking for a place which is not too far by plane from Budapest, where my fiancé and I live, but where we could enjoy sun all year round and feel the sea breeze and Marbella is the perfect place. How much time do you spend here? As much as I can - if I have the time and the opportunity I’m here! For example, this year I spent the whole summer in Marbella. When you are not in Marbella, what are you doing and where? I work as a photographic and catwalk model in Europe. I travel a lot for work, mostly in Milan and Paris and hope to work in Barcelona soon. Where do you live when you are here? Since we have set up Look Your Best we live in the Puerto Banús area which is a

44

very exciting part of the Costa del Sol. We love it as it’s close to the seaside, El Corte Inglés, good restaurants, shops and, last but not least, plenty of golf courses. Where are your favourite Marbella restaurants? I really like to cook and eat, especially pasta and seafood. In my opinion the small seaside chiringuitos are the best, but I like the Italian cuisine from Picasso and Da Bruno too. Spicy Thai foods are among my favourites too, so I am always trying out new places. What’s your idea of a good night out in Marbella? For me the best evening is to have great food in a nice restaurant, take a walk and sit in a charming bar. Where do you go to relax? I love to go to the seaside and play golf. There are beautiful golf courses in Marbella. If I want to chill out and relax I walk down to the beach. Tell us a little about your new venture Look Your Best. Look Your Best is a new, exclusive fitness and lifestyle studio which offers fast, targeted, effective personal training. It combines muscular stimulation technology (EMS), a bespoke 20 minute workout and nutritional advice for maximum results. Because it activates 90 per cent of the muscles, just one session is equivalent to 90-120 minutes in the gym, so it saves

time, reduces impact on joints and activates muscles; ‘Less time, high efficiency’ is our slogan. What’s your top tip to Look Your Best? Have a good breakfast, exercise regularly via some activity such as jogging or golf, drink lots of water and go to the Look Your Best Fitness & Lifestyle Studio once or twice a week. Do you have any celebrity in Marbella experiences you can share with us? I took part in the Global Gift Gala at the beginning of August where I met one of my favourite actresses, Eva Longoria. I really enjoyed spending time with her and her friends during the gala and after party.

Party Perfect IN A HURRY Text by Nicola McGeorge Photos by Ruth Jones

N

o time left for a festive makeover? Getting ready against the clock is no fun – being pampered to perfection, on the other hand, sounds rather appealing, don’t you think? Costa Cosmetica Beauty in San Pedro can offer you a stress-free transformation from office chic to party sleek in the blink of an eye. Christmas works do invitation, CHECK. Girls’ festive drinks booked, CHECK. Family stuff-yourself-silly bash organised, CHECK. Amount of time to get yourself scrubbed up and looking fabulous, ZERO. Presents bought for everyone, ZERO! My feet haven’t seen daylight since September, my nails have been bitten down to the quick (double deadlines do that to a girl) and I am growing out my layers, so a simple blow dry just isn’t going to cut it. I haven’t the time to visit a zillion different salons and I need somewhere that caters for women on the go and multi-tasks. As for gifts, why do I always leave everything to the last minute? I was about to ring round and declare that I had caught a virus that would last the whole month when I had a ‘eureka’ moment - Costa Cosmeticia Beauty. A multi-dimensional hair, beauty and department store all under one roof, which was JUST what I needed. So I booked myself in and hoped for the best. Maria, makeup guru extraordinaire, started my makeover by creating a bespoke party look. She began by massaging Clarins Beauty Flash into my skin to eliminate the signs of fatigue; I needed bucket load let me tell you. After asking me a few questions about preferences she settled on an updated smoky eye look. She kept the lips neutral to soften it, as I really didn’t want to look like a drag queen this year. Next it was the nails. I do like my talons to be something of a fashion statement, so Maria suggested that the nail technician match my nails to my makeup, with a funky twist on a French manicure. I was soon rocking gothic black nails tipped with a metallic gold. When it came to my hair I had envisioned the perfect cocktail party ‘do’ which

46

that uses low level lasers for smoothing cellulite, fat reduction, and body shaping treatments.

would be party edgy yet also softly feminine. Michelle, who specialises in up do’s and has 27 years experience under her belt, began tonging my hair into a cascade of curls, before adding some va va voom to my crown. The result was a highvolume bouffant with big-bodied, teased waves, perfect for the occasion. As per usual I ended up signing myself up for more than I had originally intended

to which is probably why my bank manager really doesn’t like me. Costa Cosmetica Beauty is now running a great permanent hair removal promotion, so I put my name down for a course of eight sessions, full legs, armpits and bikini for 1280€ instead of the usual 1600€ and it didn’t stop there. In preparation for my freak out after a month of food-indulgent parties and consuming more spiked eggnog or mulled wine than I would like to admit I have booked in for i-Lipo™ the a new revolutionary system

So now that I had been beautified, it was time to begin my favourite pastime SHOPPING. The selection of perfumes and beauty products at prices lower than the high street is enough to make any beauty junkie go weak at the knees. In under 30 minutes I had bought something for most of my family and friends. I bagged A Men by Thierry Mugler for my brother, my mum will love her Clarins Dynamisante gift set and as for my nieces I know the adorable Peppa Pig puppet and bath gel will go down a treat. My friends will each receive Calvin Klein foundation duo and lipstick

and with the money I saved I treated myself to Issey Miyake perfume. With everything now sorted all I have left to do is wrap the presents, I wonder if I could persuade Costa Cosmetica Beauty to do that for me as well? A Helping Hand

“Asking for help is a not a weakness. It is brave! Don’t be ashamed to request support. It can strengthen the person you are.” We would like to welcome our new monthly columnist, Gemma Wood, Head of Counselling and Psychotherapy at the newly opened Medical and Psychological Wellbeing clinic, Cortijo Care, based in San Pedro. Each month she will be tackling a different addiction, eating disorder or mental health issue, whilst also explaining why many of us need to change our mindset and accept that these are diseases, NOT a lifestyle choice.

In this article I would like to introduce you to Cortijo Care itself and explain a little more about what we do. Having spent a year planning, designing, arranging and recruiting our international team of clinical staff, psychiatric nurses, adult general nurses, psychologists, psychotherapists, consultant psychiatrist, general physician, neurologist and endocrinologist, I am pleased to announce that we are finally ready to look after you and your family. Cortijo Care officially opened on the 16th October 2013, and we were both honoured and delighted that the Mayor of Marbella, Angeles Muñoz attended our inauguration to cut the ribbon.

The Clinic A 25 bed Medical and Psychological well being clinic situated just minutes from San Pedro beach, Cortijo Care is surrounded by beautiful private gardens and offers a tranquil and serene setting for people who are in need of psychological and medical support. At Cortijo Care, we offer treatment for addictions, eating disorders, general psychiatry and short-term general respite.

levels of experiences and qualifications, enables us to provide support for up to four stages of care.

NOT mean that almost everyone cannot improve their mental health.

We are one of the only fully licensed and accredited treatment centres in the area dedicated to mental health issues. Cortijo Care is also subject to in-depth and regular inspections by the relevant local authorities. Privacy and discretion is at the heart of our ethos and key to the way we deliver treatment to you.

I am honoured to work every day with people suffering from mental illness. This may sound strange, but if someone can trust me and allow me to look into their world through their eyes, I am honoured. Most people who are suffering at some point speak of a lack or loss of hope; my job is to carry that hope until that person is ready to take it back.

What makes Cortijo Care different? As the head of the counselling and psychotherapy team, I take great pleasure in being part of a fantastic team with diverse backgrounds, yet the same drive to offer the highest quality care to patients.

* At Cortijo Care we offer a non- judgmen-

A therapeutic relationship is potentially the healthiest interpersonal situation that can be offered. Treatment and therapy at the clinic is an opportunity to learn from this and be given the life skills to mirror it in the outside world. Treatment, therapy and recovery work together to help enable people to learn ‘how to be okay, when life isn’t okay’.

Although residential treatment is only for patients of 18 years and more, we do work with children and adolescents as outpatients.

This can be one of the hardest, yet bravest things that people choose to do. I use the term ‘choose’ recovery as it is proven that if people are not in a place of readiness then only so much can be achieved. However, that does

Outpatient, day patient and in-house facilities available.

As a team, we all have a true belief that recovery is possible because we have seen it happen again and again. However long one may have suffered, recovery is possible. Every patient is different, which is why we offer a bespoke treatment; unlike many clinics we do not believe in the ‘one size fits all’ philosophy. At Cortijo Care, aftercare is paramount, so if you are not local we will work very closely with your home support provider to maintain treatment on discharge. Cortijo Care believes in people. We are here to offer help to people to the best of our ability. We treat everyone with compassion, respect and dignity. THE SILENT EPIDEMIC Dementia and Alzheimers Disease

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that causes problems with memory, thinking and behaviour. It is a degenerative neurological disease often called the ‘silent epidemic’. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and accounts for 50-80% of dementia cases.

Who is affected?

The worldwide increase in this disease is in part due to chronic illness, environmental causes and increasing life expectancy.

The diagnosis

MRI Checking the reaction of the patients through asking questions about past, future, actual problems New Diagnostics is Neuro-PET images TAU imaging agents Genetic testing

The standard Treatment

There is no standard treatment for Alzheimer’s. Substances for increasing blood circulation and brain metabolism are given.

What is happening in medical research?

Alzheimer’s has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Although current Alzheimer’s treatments cannot stop Alzheimer’s from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Today, there is a worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, and prevent it from developing.

Alois Alzheimer ( was he a Dr ) , who detected this disease ( when ) and found abnormal protein plaques in the brain tissue between the cells there are known risk factors which can influence the building of these Plaques such as increasing age, heavy metals aluminium in drinking water, sexually transmitted disease arteriosclerosis. Other risk factors such as infections, viral or bacterial based chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, migraine and psychological trauma.

The Symptoms

The symptoms of depression, behavioural change and memory loss become gradually worse. The patients can lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment

Parallel to that we are working with regenerative therapies in the form of specific growth factors for brain, nerves as well as stem cells We have treated quite lots of patients with dementia and Alzheimer with good results not only in getting a stabilisation as well getting an improvement of the situation.

About Alois Alzheimer

Alois Alzheimer was born in 1864 in Markbreit in Bavaria, Southern Germany. Along with Franz Nissl, a colleague at the asylum, Alzheimer spent the following years working on a major six volume study, the ‘Histologic and Histopathologic Studies of the Cerebral Cortex,’ describing the pathology of the nervous system. The work was finally published between 1907 and 1918.

New research is moving towards the use of specific videogames, which can improve attention (published in “nature”)

How we can help

We know that Alzheimer can be a result of environmental problems as well as chronic inflammation we work at detecting possible triggers and target and treat these triggers with specific natural substances, which improve metabolism and circulation of the brain. We are also working with substances to get rid of the found triggers. Prevention and optimum health are at the core of what we do. The earlier illness can be treated, the better the outcome for the patient and their family.

Prevention

At our clinic we balance the disturbed

50

metabolism and building of neurotransmitters with individualised infusions, as well as micronutrients, which stimulate the repairing of the damaged neuronal function

There are many sites worldwide that give advice for patients and family on Alzheimer’s such as alzheimers.org.uk

There is much research and discussion amongst medical experts about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, which are still not fully known. Some research indicates certain individuals have a genetic predisposition to this disease.

How did it get its name?

Dr Ursula Jacob addresses some of the issues in her work with patients across the world.

Alzheimer identified an ‘unusual disease of the cerebral cortex’ which affected a woman in her fifties, Auguste D., and caused memory loss, disorientation, hallucinations and ultimately her death aged only 55. The post-mortem showed various abnormalities of the brain. The cerebral cortex was thinner than normal and senile plaque, previously only encountered in elderly people, was found in the brain along with neurofibrillary tangles. Alzheimer had access to a new stain and was able to identify these nerve tangles which had never previously been described. Kraepelin named the disease after Alzheimer. Today, the pathological diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is still generally based on the same investigative methods used in 1906. This is remarkable compared with the development of investigative methods for other diseases, and it speaks volumes about the quality of Alzheimer’s Dr. Ursula Jacob + 49 (89) 46 22 95 02, info@doc-jacob.com doc-jacob.com

It was good news for the needy children at the orphanage in Alhaurin el Grande recently, as a charity dinner held at Restaurante Valparaiso, Mijas raised 2300 euros, which will be used to ensure that their Christmas will be worth celebrating. Organiser Kara Robertson was able to report that the event was a huge success, with entertainment being provided by Lucy Faye, Frank Stott and Astra, the belly dancer. “All the children asked for a special present, plus a track suit and trainers, so we hope to make their Christmas wishes come true,” said Kara.

I

just can’t believe it’s December again - it seems like only yesterday that we were getting our Xmas decorations out! It has been a fast and fabulous creative year in all respects. We’ve had great projects, wonder ful clients and I’ve truly enjoyed writing Home Couture articles for you. So to wrap up 2013, I’d like to show you some amazing designs to deco-

rate your floors. As we enter the winter months, I thought it a most welcome subject. More and more, the floor is becoming the focal point in design schemes. We are bringing back old cultures and experimenting with symmetrical patterns, combining them with raw textures, uneven shapes, knots and twists of bursting colour. We explore the wild world of abstract art to

decorate our floors, using centuries old techniques that have stood the test of time, not abiding by any rule, except that of design without limits. The following power houses with whom I’m happy to work are best known for creativity and bespoke quality that transcends our expectations, each with their distinctive eye and passion for design.

BY HEN ZEL

DIAMOND DUST BY HENZEL The new hand knotted collection Diamond Dust / Nordic Raw, designed by Calle Henzel, was formed from scientific experiments that involved placing the rugs outside in the harsh Swedish climate to study the effects of weather. The result is pure artistry in the form of a unique and distinctive design. Materials: Himalayan wool & Silk Technique: Hand Knotted

Henzel is among the most treasured rug brands in the world. The studio is located in Gothenburg on the southwest coast of Sweden – an area rich in textile design and manufacturing history. For over a decade, Henzel Studio has created luxury handmade rugs for both highend residential and hospitality clients. Fusing the avantgarde aesthetic of Calle Henzel’s unique artworks with the breakthrough technologies in production, an entirely new category has been defined, composed of equal parts of craftsmanship, style, art, luxury and forward-thinking design. 71

The best of both worlds: you can be cool and still keep your feet warm! With his modern designs, Jan Kath (born 1972) is creating a completely new perspective on carpets. Guided by a bold approach in his work, Kath, originally from Bochum, combines classical elements of oriental carpets with contemporary, minimalist design. Kath has developed an unmistakable signature that defines style and is one of the most important carpet designers on the international stage today. His concepts have earned numerous accolades,

JAN KATH

SARI

Jan Kath focuses on the electrifying radiance of traditional Indian dress. In doing so, he uses only the very finest silk cloths worn by Indian women for special celebrations. The saris are first cut into fine strips, which are then painstakingly separated, cleaned and sorted by colour, before being used as pile material. With bright azure blues, radiant moss greens, and bold garnet reds, it is an uncommon vibrancy of color that makes these carpets so unique. The designer refers to this as “Luxury recycling”.

including the Red Dot Award and Carpet Design Award. More and more of his work is now appearing in museums that showcase art and design such as the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Art, the Beijing International Design Triennial, and Art Museum Riga Bourse, Latvia. Kath is an autodidact. So let’s visit part of his outstanding collection.

TOKIO

You could get lost in these carpets. In His “Tokio“ collection, Jan Kath recreates the pictures of famous artistic photographer Stefan Emmelmann as pieces of textile artwork. Carpets become art, and art becomes carpets. In this process, millions of pixels from the digital original are translated knot by knot into silk and wool – a technique that demands the highest level of skill and presents the craft of carpet making in a new light. Carpets in the TOKIO collection include a phenomenal play of colours. On closer inspection, the observer will begin to recognize night scenes from the Japanese metropolis: high-rise buildings, illuminated advertising, bicycles, posters, and people. It is an entirely new dimension in the world of decorative carpets.

The choice of powerful fluorescent colours such as neon green, orange, bright purple, and electric pink means that motifs borrowed from Italian wall coverings and Spanish carpets that usually have a simple, noble effect are given a completely different mode of expression. It holds a dynamically organic design, topped with elements of Erased Classic that provides the carpet with a subtle eroded look. Jan Kath has also resurrected tassels in this collection. Long and brightly coloured, they give these carpets an additional, slightly “hippie-esque” touch.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

It would be difficult to surpass the opulence of this design. Magnificent roses and lavish floral wreaths form the basic pattern of the carpet. The petal motifs are reminiscent of the traditional shawls and headscarves still worn by old Russian women in rural areas to this day. The collection is also inspired by carpets made in Karabakh and other provinces in southern Russia around 1900; the patterns are created using rich, bright colors of Tibetan highland wool and Chinese silk, making each final product a unique and emotionally powerful piece of art. These carpets dictate the character of the space they are in and create a focal point of interest.

JAN KATH Jan Kath combines a centuryold knotting technique with modern handtufting technology. The result is a whole new look that will captivate the attention of everyone who sees it. The designer calls it Tagged. With each hand-tied knot using traditional templates found in small factories, a classic Oriental rug serves as the foundation for this exclusive, unique work of art. The wool is hand-spun and dyed using natural pigments. A specially developed antique finishing technique makes it look as if the rug has been lying in the salon of an old manor house for years on end. In other words, it’s a new “old” rug. “It’s actually perfect the way it is now, but perfect is boring,” says Kath before moving on to the next step and applying the rug’s signature feature – a bright pink, golden, or vibrant blue silk. Using a special technique, graphics, and slogans such as “Make Rugs, not War,” “Sex, Rugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and “This Is a Rug Revolution” appear like graffiti on the traditional knotted surface.

Guests also have the opportunity to turn their stay into a distinctly VIP experience by choosing some of the services offered by Punta Palmera that include a private chef, spa treatments, a babysitting service and private butler. The apartments are equipped with wi-fi and a daily cleaning service, which includes towels and linen, is also included in the price. Cap Cana has a number of outstanding facilities, not the least of which is the marina where a number of high-end boutiques and many excellent restaurants can be found. Boat trips can be booked via the Punta Palmera concierge.

The beautiful Punta Espada course is always a draw with keen golfers and it is certainly true that playing the game so close to the Caribbean is a uniquely enjoyable experience. Scape Park is an unexpected treat. Cap Cana’s very own activities park offers some surprising options, from zip line rides to horse riding; it is also possible to attack the sand dunes in a bona fide dune buggy and swim in a freshwater cave. With an annual average temperature of 25ºC, scenery that typifies all one would expect of a Caribbean paradise and the chance to enjoy a raft of activities – or merely to lie on the beach and enjoy the fabulous surroundings – Punta Palmera delivers on every front. Text by Hayley Reed / Photos by David Toms perfect example of this is the luxury, private villa situated in La Resina Golf and Country Club. With stunning sea views and the golf course running directly from the very bottom of the garden, this four/ five bedroom villa equipped with gym, home office and home cinema was a new build in desperate need of a little TLC.

With the property being left near-complete for a number of years, Propana knew the potential that the home had and knew how it was important to get the finishing detail right in order to complete this luxury, well-distributed residence. With the expert help and advise of FOC Design, the well established Interior Design and Project Management company, Propana quickly rectified the basic aesthetics of the

property by using fresh, light colours for the walls and good lighting throughout. The infinity pool was bettered by retiling the entirety in a superior tile, whilst making sure the feature swimming pool windows, that run into the gymnasium, were all sealed professionally and securely. A new lawn was laid, new security was installed throughout the property and protecting the perimeter and the exterior repainted. With the outside of the property now polished, it was now up to FOC Design to dress the house into a home. The

layout of each bedroom was carefully thought about and distributed to best suit the residence. A home cinema, office and gym were designed and fitted on the garden level, along with two stunningly dressed twin rooms and another luxury double bedroom. The master bedroom is situated on the ground floor, overlooking the infinity pool and on the same level as the perfectly allocated social space of an adjoining open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge. The designers used accent wallpapers to accentuate the pitched ceilings and draw attention to the detail of the wooden beams that furnish it. The central fireplace was dressed with a new mantel and a wall mounted flatscreen TV. The flanking low units provide plenty of storage in the lounge, clearly demonstrating that thought has gone into the practicality of the residence, as well as the beauty. The only thing topping the interiors throughout is when you walk out onto the private terrace and admire the jaw-dropping views! You cannot help imagine enjoying a long summer evening overlooking the rambling golf course, out to sea and over to the African mountains. It is hard not to fall in love with this once unfinished family home now that you can see it in all its glory. Walking through this once abandoned development, you can now see that not only do Propana take pride in the sourcing and completing of their projects, but you understand why they are succeeding in attracting investors and end users alike.

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the NOVITEC ROSSO F12 & N-LARGO Back in the 1980s, wide-bodied conversions were all the rage. This was a time when the German tuners went to town, turning supercars and unsuspecting hot hatches alike into creations that mostly looked like cartoon caricatures of themselves. Just when we thought this trend was dead and buried, the Novitec Rosso N-Largo, based on the Ferrari F12 popped out of the woodwork. Initially stunned by its appearance, and the very idea that Novitec Rosso, one of the most sober of the German tuners could be behind this creation, was enough to get us on a plane heading for their HQ in deepest Bavaria.

85

TORQUE TALK

“From day one the ethos of Novitec Rosso has been to offer our individualist clients subtle visual changes with accompanying alloy wheel, suspension, and engine upgrades to the same technical standard as the factory,” explained Dirk Moersdorf, the company’s effusive sales manager. “This is the very first time we ever created a wide body conversion for a Ferrari,” he explained. “However, with the F12, we had specific requests from several of our overseas dealers and customers to do something distinctly different along these lines.” “Now that we have done it, we have no doubts that the F12 is the perfect car to receive this treatment,” he continued. “To be frank, we never even considered a wide body conversion before on any of our cars, and it is certainly not something that will become the norm here.” One look at the N-Largo and it is plain to see that Novitec Rosso’s first ever foray on the wild side is 100-proof, head turning, eyeball riveting visual theatre. Call it a throwback to the 1980s if you like, but the N-Largo conversion has a 21st Century refinement to its lines and detailing that has clearly moved on from the Ferrari BB and Testarossa conversions from Koenig Specials that were all the rage nearly three decades ago.

86

So where does the N-Largo tag come from? “It is a fantasy name that we created during a brainstorming session to discussing the final look of the car with automotive designer, Vittorio Strosek,” said Dirk. The mention of my old friend’s name raised an eyebrow here, as it was Vittorio who designed the original wide-bodied look for Willy Koenig back in 1983. You could say that in this respect, the wheel has come full circle.

Where the normal Novitec Rosso F12 conversion uses their one-piece NF4 forged wheels in 9.5J x 21-inch and 12.0J x 22-inch sizes with 255/30ZR21 and 335/25ZR22 Pirelli PZero tyres, the N-Largo uses deeper dished NF3 threepiece wheels in the same sizes, along with aluminium spacers to achieve its wider stance. The most basic suspension tweak is a set of sports springs that drop the ride height by 25mm. This is designed to also work on cars equipped with the factory lift system. As the rear wheels would foul the factory bodywork, in time honoured German tuners fashion, the original wheel arches are cut away, the edges of the metal properly lipped and rust treated, and bespoke arch liners fitted to keep road muck at bay. The new, wider carbon-fibre rear arch

The body extensions add 60mm and 110mm to the F12’s overall width front and rear respectively. As almost every modern car, including all current Ferrari road cars have bolt-on front wings, this is simply a matter of swapping out the stock wings for the new wider carbonfibre ones that use the factory mounting points. Things are a bit more complex at the rear however, as far from being an exercise in pure optics, the wider bodywork is accompanied by a wider track achieved through a combination of wheel offsets and spacers.

mouldings are bonded to the metal bodywork and many hours of meticulous blending work are carried out in preparation for priming and painting. The N-Largo also receives a complete new and wider front section with a large air splitter, wider side sills, rear underbody diffusers, and a fixed rear wing. All these components are made from carbon fibre, as are the mirror covers, the only non-technical parts of this conversion. Over the years I have seen many body styling conversions let down by inad-

equate preparation work, which is clearly visible under the paint. But after poring over the N-Largo’s new arches for some minutes, I was unable to spot any flaws in either the pre-paint preparation or the Rosso Corsa paintwork, so full marks here. This level of perfection in the finish is why Novitec insists that they perform the bodywork and paint in Germany. Leaving it to a dealer on the other side of the world whose body shop will likely fall short of Novitec’s world-class standards would do their reputation no good if something went wrong and the client was unhappy.

Drive a standard F12 for any length of time and a major impression you will be left with is just how easy the most powerful road car in Ferrari’s arsenal is to drive. Compared to its mid-engined siblings, this classical front-engine, reardriven supercar is relatively easy to see out of when manoeuvring, and easier to place on the road.

TORQUE TALK

“This is the very first time we ever created a wide body conversion for a Ferrari”

Its good ride, easy handling, light power steering, powerful and tractable

87

TORQUE TALK

Its good ride, easy handling, light power steering, powerful and tractable engine and smooth gearbox make it a user-friendly proposition engine and smooth gearbox make it a user-friendly proposition for someone coming to the marque from say an Aston Martin, Bentley or Mercedes. As Dirk Moersdorf quite rightly says, “In the past, when standard Ferraris had 400 or 500hp, we offered twin supercharger conversions with up to 705 hp that took their performance to major league supercar levels. However, now that you can buy a standard Ferrari with between 600 and 700hp, we do not see the need for massive power increases anymore, especially as the cars are rear-wheel-drive only.” “With the latest cars, we concentrate on sharpening the cars reflexes, with a modest power and torque increase, sharper throttle response, a more engaging exhaust soundtrack and an adjustable suspension for owners who want a more hard-core experience on road or track.”

88

As far as how the Novitec Rosso feels on a public road, these mods in no way fundamentally change the balance of the F12. The slightly larger rubber footprint gives it a shade more mechanical grip, while the adjustable sports suspension as set up on the day reduces roll and adds a slight edge to the way the car goes down the road that is not there on the stock F12. This is no way compromises the comfort aspect of the cars abilities as a long distance cruiser, and it should not, given that the F12 is a Ferrari for munching the miles rather than chasing the curves on a Sunday morning as you would do in a 458 Italia. The only flaw in the cars dynamic mix is actually a Ferrari one. The power steering, while being as smooth as silk and nicely geared for easy use around town, does not weigh up sufficiently on the open road for my liking. Its feel and feedback are excellent, but as it remains fairly light

TORQUE TALK

...even the basic Novitec F12 conversion is a wonderful way to sharpen the claws of a classically designed supercar best described as the grandson of, and spiritual successor to, the legendary 365GTB/4 Daytona. at high speed, it does not offer sufficient fingertip resistance at the helm to instil real confidence when turning into a fast bend on a country road, or an autobahn sweeper at big speeds. While you could say that an owner will get used to this, I would counter that by saying that it should be right from the word go. It is probably one concession too far made by Ferrari as a sop to new rich owners who may never explore their cars real potential on a twisty road or racetrack. This is an issue that I picked up with the standard car, and I was hoping that the wider rubber on the Novitec version would ameliorate this to some extent, but in the event it does not. That apart, even the basic Novitec F12 conversion is a wonderful way to sharpen the claws of a classically designed supercar best described as the grandson of, and spiritual successor to, the legendary 365GTB/4 Daytona. With 740 hp at 8,500rpm and 690Nm (509 ft lb) of torque at 6,000rpm out of the box, the F12 is the most powerful production Ferrari ever, and more than doubles the 352hp output of the Daytona. However, there will always be a few for whom too much power is just enough, and so Novitec Rosso set about unlocking more of the big V12 engine’s built-in potential. When it comes to engine conversion nomenclature, Novitec work the other way from other tuners. So where Stage 1 is normally the starting point, the Bavarian Ferrari tuner considers Stage 3 to be the first of their power enhancing

steps, centred around a freer breathing sports exhaust and ECU remap. First things first, however, and quite separate from these three stages of tune, the owner who wishes to keep the stock exhaust can opt for a basic ECU remap that optimises the fuel and ignition curves, and raises the rev limit to 8,900rpm. This electronic wizardry takes power to 763hp at 8,500rpm, with 703 Nm of torque at 6,300rpm, while the higher rev limit allows a 5.0 km/h increase in top speed.

a total weight saving of 13.0 kg sees further gains in power, torque and throttle response with Stage 2. The big numbers are 774hp at 8,500rpm, and 716 Nm of torque at 6,300rpm. In this case, the total system is 13 kg lighter than stock.

The Stage 3 conversion uses this remapped ECU in combination with Novitec Rosso’s bespoke stainless steel sports exhaust, for a power boost to 767 hp at 8,450rpm with 708Nm of torque at 6,250rpm. As well as lowering backpressure and providing a deeper chested soundtrack, this exhaust also weighs a significant 9.0 kg less than the factory one. In basic form, the Novitec exhaust comes without sound flap regulation, but if you tick the box for this option, you will be able to control it via the steering wheel Manettino. Swapping the stock catalytic converters for less restrictive 100 cell metal cats and an X-pipe exhaust system or

89

TORQUE TALK

Stage 1 is for countries with less strict emission and noise regulations such as the Middle East. Here, catalytic converter delete pipes liberate an additional 7.0 hp and 6.0 Nm, taking the count to 781 hp at 8,600rpm and 722 Nm at 6,400rpm. As with the other stages of tune, the exhaust flap regulation is an option, and deleting the catalytic converters saves a further 3.0 kg. As they are German-spec cars, the Novitec Rosso F12 and N-Largo that I tested were modified to Stage 2 specifications. This conversion does not alter the fundamental character of the F12, merely sharpens its claws. Given the depth and breadth of the cars capabilities out of the box, this is a good thing, since the fine overall balance of Maranello’s finest is maintained. This balance, incidentally, has always been a hallmark of Novitec Rosso cars, even when they gave the F360 and F430 massive power infusions via twin supercharger conversions.

If you are looking for a V12 Ferrari to express your extrovert side, then this car fits the bill perfectly. 90

It speaks of a philosophy that recognises and respects the excellence of the Ferrari models that form the basis of their conversions, seeking to tailor in greater individuality for their owners rather than claiming to improve them. Thus, at the end of my fast and invigorating drives in the F12 and N-Largo, I was as much in awe of the basic cars capabilities as ever, and impressed with the subtle way in which the Novitec Rosso mechanical conversions had further underpinned the cars character. It is hard to believe that such a large capacity motor can rev to high and so smoothly, but the V12 seems to defy the laws of physics every time you push the accelerator pedal to the floor. This engine is so torque rich that driving around town at 50km/h in fourth or even fifth gear is possible, with just a light push on the throttle resulting in real forward thrust. The stock F12, like all modern V12 Ferraris, is a bit too quiet for my liking. Blame the EU lawmakers for that one.

The Novitec Rosso exhaust helps to recover some of the aural stimulation enjoyed by past generations of Ferrari and if you have the flap regulation, you will never regret spending the extra money the first and then every time you open the throttle wide in a tunnel! It is about time that someone gave a front-engined V12 Ferrari the head turning abilities of an Enzo or LaFerrari, but without bordering on the gauche look that some non-Ferrari specialist tuners have managed to achieve before. If the bog standard F12 is Wall Street sober in a pin-stripe suit, then the Novitec Rosso version wears an Armani sports jacket. The N-Largo on the other hand is a party animal, and proud of it. Featuring the same mechanical upgrades, but now with the show to match its extra go, the Novitec Rosso N-Largo is a car with immense visual gravitas. If you are looking for a V12 Ferrari to express your extrovert side, then this car fits the bill perfectly. Local dealer: Guarnieri

SOPHISTICATION

by the seaside

D

uring the summer it’s a case of battling the crowds and ‘every man for himself’ but when most of the visitors leave there are few things that we like better than finding ourselves a little spot on Marbella’s gorgeous Paseo Maritimo and settling down for an evening of great food and peoplewatching. When the mood does take us, one of our favourite places on the paseo is the perennially popular Garum. Not only is the beachside setting the perfect place to admire the sunset, Garum’s owner, Timo, is well known for turning out some of the most imaginative dishes on the Coast. The dusk might arrive a lot earlier at this time of the year (last time we visited it was still light when we had finished our meal) but even in the late autumn this wonderful restaurant still has bags of charm. With its kitchen, which is open for business from 11:00am until midnight every night of the week, Garum attracts

92

a faithful army of fans throughout the day but our favourite time to visit is dusk, when the imaginative lighting creates the best atmosphere and you can just about hear the sounds of the sea. Timo’s years of experience as a host are evident when clients arrive; the man seems to have an encyclopaedic memory of every person who has ever eaten at his restaurant and his welcome was as warm as ever as he directed us to

a table with a fabulous view. His team of waiters is every bit as friendly and helpful and are constantly on hand to help you with anything that you might require during your visit. Just one look at the menu reveals Garum’s popularity; the range of dishes is guaranteed to appeal to every member of the party, however fussy they may be and each recipe has a unique twist.

The wine list also makes for interesting reading, but it often pays to try the house wine at a restaurant which produces such wonderful dishes. We decided to try the house red and requested a bottle of Luis Gurpegui Muga Rioja, which proved excellent and the perfect accompaniment to the fabulous food. We were tempted to try the house Gazpacho, served with Garlic Flakes but in the end we decided to try the Ginger Broth with Julienne Vegetables, Smoked Tofu and Duck Confit Dim Sum, which is possibly the most imaginative soup that either of us had ever tasted. We decided that Timo’s Scandinavian roots were probably responsible for our second starter choice, 3 Styles of Herring which included Herring Tartare with Blackberries, Herring Marinated in a creamy Garlic Sauce and, finally, Herring Salad with Capers, Nuts and

very much like to repeat, maybe at a return to Garum?

COSTA CUISINE

After enjoying the remainder of the wine we scanned the dessert section and couldn’t resist a dish called Forbidden Games: consisting of two Mousses, one of Milk Chocolate and the other of Rice Pudding served with Brandy Marinated Plums, it sounded as decadent as it tasted. In fact, a couple of weeks later I am still dreaming about this and presumably my companion is still having wonderful flashbacks of her choice. From Paris to Dublin was aptly named, since it comprised Irish Coffee Crème Brûlée served with Pistachio Pesto and Mint. With neither of us wanting to miss out on either of these treats, we placed them both in the middle of the table and competed for every mouthful of each dish.

Apple. Both were full of interesting flavours and beautifully presented and, although I had my doubts about the Herring Tartare with Blackberries I am pleased to report that it was delicious.

After so many visits to Garum we find that this fabulous restaurant never fails to surprise and, with frequent changes to the menu, it is well worth visiting every few weeks just to see what’s new.

Despite the variety of main courses, all of which I could have enjoyed, choosing just one became a lot easier when I noticed the Rack of Lamb with Chocolate and Thyme Sauce served with a Spring Roll of Smoked Mashed Potato and Onion. My companion adores fish, so ordered the Grilled Salmon with Truffle Oil and Sauvignon Blanc Sauce served with Smoked Aubergine and Almond Mousse and Julienne Fried Potatoes. Both were sensational – most impressive were the tasty Chocolate and Thyme Sauce that accompanied the lamb and the Smoked Aubergine and Almond Mousse, of which my companion insisted that I try a forkful. This contained a combination of flavours that I have never experienced before, but would

apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love.

Real Wedd

Bhavesh and I met again after some years at a fitness centre and we recognised each other straight away. We started to meet up as friends and realised that we shared the same interests however our friendship drifted slowly

ings

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. He then sudMelanie two day denly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I marr celeb ied in ration family, a elega turned around to surro see what he was friend nt unded s by their pointing at,and andson, as I looked Dexte down, a light shone on to the rocksr.

morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own.

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale.

Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship.

MEANT TO BE…

We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

THINK BEFORE YOU BUY A PUPPY

FOR CHRISTMAS Written by an animal rescue volunteer who wants to remain anonymous

I

think our society needs a huge wakeup call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all - a view from the inside if you will. First of all, anyone who has surrendered a pet to a shelter or humane society should be made to work in an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would stop flagging the pedigree ads in the classifieds and help these animals find homes. That puppy you just bought will most likely end up in my shelter when it’s not a cute little puppy anymore. Just so you know there’s a 90 per cent chance that a dog will never walk out of the shelter it’s dumped at, pure bred or not. About 25 per cent of all of the dogs that are owner surrenders or strays that come into a shelter are pure bred dogs. The most common excuses are, “We are moving and we can’t take our dog (or cat).” Really? Or, “The dog got bigger than we thought it would”. How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? “We don’t have time for her”. Honestly? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my six dogs! “She’s tearing up our garden”. How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me, “We just don’t want to have to stress about finding a place for her. We know she’ll get adopted, she’s a good dog”. Odds are your pet won’t get adopted and how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off; sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn’t full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run or kennel in a room with other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him or her for a walk. If I don’t, your pet won’t get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under

116

the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the “bully” breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don’t get adopted. It doesn’t matter how ‘sweet’ or ‘well behaved’ they are. If your dog isn’t adopted in 72 hours and the shelter is full, in most cases it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn’t full and your dog is good enough and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long. Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles, chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because the shelter gets paid a fee to euthanize each animal and making money is better than spending money to take this animal to the vet. Now here’s a little ‘Euthanasia 101’ lesson for those of you who have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being put down. First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk, happily wagging their tails. Until they get to “The Room”, every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there. It’s strange, but it happens with every one of them.

When it all ends, your pet’s corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed, waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? Or used for the schools to dissect and experiment on? You’ll never know and it probably won’t even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right? I hope that those of you who still have a beating heart and have read this are bawling your eyes out and can’t get the pictures out of your head, I deal with this every day. I hate my job, I hate that it exists and I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and start educating the public. Do research, do your homework and know exactly what you are getting into before getting a pet. These shelters and humane societies exist because people just do not care about animals anymore. Animals were not intended to be disposable but somehow that is what they are these days. Animal shelters are an easy way out when you get tired of your animal and breeders are the ones blamed for this. Animal shelters and rescue organisations are making a hefty profit by keeping this misconception going. Between nine and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters (the Humane Society of the US estimates three to four million) and only you as a pet owner can stop it. I just hope that I have changed one person’s mind about taking their dog to a shelter, a humane society, or buying a dog without researching. THINK before your selfishness takes over.

This new venture will be an oenogastronomic space, where you can taste the finest wines of Spain and the Old World in the best conditions. PURE SKIN WELCOMES BEST OF BRITISH LUXURY SKINCARE BRAND OSKIA Sofia from Pure Skin Beauty is always one step ahead of the rest when it comes to seeking out the best skincare brands for her Los Naranjos Golf Beauty Room. Featured at top London hotels such as The Berkeley and The Langham, Oskia has been described by Grazia magazine as “the new Brit brand taking the skincare world by storm”. The product range comprises eight products, uniquely formulated by an international team of nutritionists, doctors, dermatologists and formulators, with 98 per cent natural ingredients and 100 per cent cutting edge science. The inspiration for Oskia came

from the personal experience of its founder Georgie Cleeve, with a natural nutritional joint supplement called MSM which is known as the ‘Beauty Mineral’ and ‘Healing Mineral’ for its ability to support collagen production, promote circulation, decrease inflammation and aid detoxification of cells. The MSM used in Oskia products is a natural form of organic sulphur traditionally taken as a supplement to strengthen and repair joint cartilage. Cartilage is made of collagen, the same protein that gives skin its strength and elasticity. Sofia told us, when we asked why she had decided to add Oskia to her range of skincare products, that “Oskia has blown my mind with the amount of active ingredients they have put into each product, around nine to 15 of the best bio-actives. These products are packed with vitamins, minerals, omegas and proteins

and yet they are not heavy at all. This is really pure Skin Nutrition. The products are beautifully packaged adding to that feel good experience and we are looking forward to adding Oskia’s signature treatments to our treatment menu early next year” Oskia products, as well as beautifully packaged Oskia gift sets, are available at: Pure Skin Beauty Tel. + 34 951 134 983 at The Wellness Studio Los Naranjos Golf Club
