A
n athletic child, Gadot studied dance and played several sports in her youth. One of her first career ambitions was to be a choreographer. Gadot entered the Miss Israel competition at age 18, thinking it would be a fun experience. Winning the title helped launch her career as a model, she also went on to represent her country at the Miss Universe pageant. Gal then served her mandatory two-year commitment in the Israel Defense Forces before heading to college to study law. Gadot says that her military background helped her to win the role of Gisele in Fast & Furious. “I think the main reason was that the director Justin Lin really liked that I was in the military, and he wanted to use my knowledge of weapons. “After her military service, Gadot studied law and government at the IDC Herzliya college in Herzliya, Israel. Whilst studying, Gadot was approached to audition for a role in James Bond’s Quantum of Solace, despite not getting the part, the interview sparked her interest in acting
and she soon landed a role on the Israeli TV series, Bubot. In 2009 Gal made her film debut in Fast & Furious starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. She returned to the role in the sequels Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7. During this time Gal also landed roles in 2010’s Date Night and Night and Day and had a supporting role in the Israeli feature, Kicking Out Shoshana. Next came Criminal alongside Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Costner, followed by Keeping Up with the Joneses with Isla Fisher and Jon Hamm before she took on the role of a lifetime as Wonder Woman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Getting into character presented her with some challenges, as she told Jimmy Kimmel on his talk show. At first, her costume “was so tight, I literally could not breathe.”
Gal then rocked the world with the release of Wonder Woman in spring 2017. The Patty-Jenkins-directed film was a hit with audiences, grossing more than $820 million globally, while critics praised Gadot’s performance. Gal reprised the role in Justice League, alongside Ben Affleck and Jason Momoa and then again in 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984. In addition to her acting successes, Gal has led international campaigns as a model for Miss Sixty, Huawei smartphones, Captain Morgan rum, Gucci fragrances and Jaguar Cars. She has also been featured as the cover girl on Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Entertainment Weekly and FHM. In 2020, Forbes ranked Gadot as the third highest-paid actress in the world, with annual earnings of $31.5 million. Last year it was confirmed Gal will be reuniting with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins on Cleopatra. Gadot also starred alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds in the comedy Red Notice and was cast as the Evil Queen, in a live-action film adaptation of Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which is expected to begin production 2022. As well as soaring in her career, Gal has also triumphed in her personal life; she married Israeli businessman Yaron Varsano in 2008 and the couple have three daughters, the youngest, Daniella, they welcomed earlier this year. Three children and a remarkable career, Gal really is Wonder Woman.

LADY WRAY – Piece of Me
Piece of Me is the sophomore full length album from Lady Wray. This record is a change for Nicola, there is a heavy hip-hop influence, boom-bap drums and chunky base lines. The title track, “Piece of Me,” is about the people in your life who need more than you are willing to give. This tune and the B side of the 7” “Come On In” were the first songs put to tape for this album and they were recorded with Nicole sitting in a chair 8 months pregnant with her daughter. Her voice is so powerful and so raw on these tracks, but what’s most incredible is to know she knocked them all out in one take. Long-time collaborator and producer Leon Michels keeps the musical backing controlled and expertly executed, setting up Lady Wray for the full spotlight and setting the tone for the rest of the album.

In Season 2 the elf Invoker, is left with a choice, to kill Selemene or simply strip her of her power? For the goddess, the idea of losing her powers is arguably a fate worse than death, especially if she had to witness another take her power and become a god themselves.
Netflix is rebooting the teen comedy Spanish series Rebelde which originally ran between 2004 and 2006. Rebelde follows the lives of a group of young students at the Elite Way School, an elite Mexican college. Among dramas and lots of music, passions, friendships, and rivalries will arise in the path of the protagonists. Former student, Celina Ferrer becomes the new director of the Elite Way School, while the teen cast are fresh and new to the show.
THE JOURNALIST: SEASON 1
The Journalist is an adaptation of the hit movie of the same name, released theatrically in 2019. It was a huge hit with audiences gathering a great deal of attention by confronting Japanese political crimes and scandals of recent years. OJ WALKS FREE OJ Simpson, who was acquitted of murder in 1995, and then convicted of armed robbery in Las Vegas in 2008, is now a free man after being discharged from parole in Nevada. The 74-year-old former footballer and actor was granted good-behaviour credit and released last month. Simpson declined an immediate interview and his attorney refused to talk about Simpson’s future plans, including whether he intends to remain in Nevada.

Russell has been open about dealing with an addiction to heroin and agreeing to go to rehab in 2002.

Dry January does life without alcohol seem unbearable?
The holiday season is almost over, fun has been had and we’ve all overindulged with food and alcohol. Most people will be looking at a January of moderation, a chance to get stuck into the New Year’s resolutions by eating healthily, a bit of exercise and cutting back on the booze. What if you struggle to cut back on alcohol, you realise that a dry January isn’t an option you can or want to contemplate. Not drinking seems to be the worst idea in the world, and what, or where, would you get your pleasure? Deep down you know things can’t carry on as they are. The consequences of your drinking are catching up with you. The hangovers are killing you; maybe you are starting to drink earlier, or once you pick up a drink you don’t know how it will end. Physically your body isn’t doing well, shakes in the morning, struggling to eat properly, or other health worries that are only getting worse. Relationships are suffering, family members are commenting on your drinking, invites out with friends are drying up because it always seems to end in disaster, and when you try and control or stop the alcohol you are just angry and irritable. There is a warning flagging in your brain, a thought that maybe
you have a problem with alcohol, but another part is telling you that you can’t consider not drinking anymore, that life without booze would be unbearable. This isn’t true, there is an alternative, a solution that millions of people worldwide have used to combat issues with problem drinking. Here a couple of members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) talk about how they found an answer to their struggles with alcohol, and how their lives have turned around. “My name is Clifford and when I came into AA, I thought my life was over. I was in debt to the tune of hundreds of euros, owed to bars, clubs, and friends. I was dirty and greasy; people didn’t want me around them. My family could no longer deal with me, and I’d just lost my best friend to alcoholism. I was 25 years old, and I had no future and no hope.
In just five months my life has transformed completely. Things changed the moment I walked into my first meeting, I found a crazy bunch of people who constantly make me laugh and who will love and support me through anything. I have real friends now. My life has meaning and purpose. Whatever idea you may have of AA in your head, get rid of it because it is not what you expect at all. It is life changing and it makes me happy to be alive every single day!” “My name is Amelia. I was driven to AA by my loneliness, depression, and self-sabotage. On the days when I was drinking, I was full of darkness, and it was slowly killing me. When I wasn’t drinking it was worse, whether I was hungover or not I was always lonely and sad. YOUR BEST YEAR YET I’m not a massive fan of New Year’s Resolutions, it just feels a very prescriptive time to set what for most of us turns out to be a very loose “goal”.
I
f it makes you feel better, great! However, there is a better way to set yourself up for a fantastic 2022, and that’s by not only getting really clear on what your goals are, but emotionally connecting with them, connecting with yourself, and building an actionable plan to get to where you want to be. Now for many of us as the clocks chime midnight we may slur about how this year we’re going to lose some weight, make more money, pursue a hobby… but research suggests that around 80% of us abandon our resolutions by February.
This makes sense if you think about it, we have a solid month of pursuing our new dream, but then faced with a lack of discernible progress, coupled with just finding it too hard to apply our new discipline, we slide back to our old habits.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
What if you could not only sustain your progress towards your 2022 goal, but also make achieving it incrementally easier To do this we need to think about our goal in terms of behaviour change, rather than just in terms of what external actions we need to perform to get there. You see, we cannot out-perform our self-identity. Whatever beliefs we hold about our ability to achieve (or not achieve) our goal will massively impact our ability to succeed.
Once we create a new self-identity that’s aligned with who we want to be (our goal) and start behaving in accordance with it, then we start moving from forced conscious action towards making unconscious lifestyle choices. Here’s an example, many people go on fad diets to lose weight, and although they’re successful in the very short term, they end up putting on more weight down the line. There are physiological reasons for this, but in psychological terms, it’s because their beliefs about their own ability to maintain the weight loss pull them back. In psychology we have a concept called congruence theory that states our behaviours and beliefs must be aligned. When they are not we fall into a state of cognitive dissonance and either our behaviour or belief must change so they become realigned. The problem is our beliefs are much more powerful than our behaviours, so unless we work on those, we’ll fall back to old ways. Sitting on the couch seems a better option than going for a run, so our behaviour falls back in line with our old self-image…
W E LL , THE G O O D NEW S I S T HAT THE RE A RE WAY S TO C H A NG E T H I S , AN D FA STE R T H A N YO U ’ D T HI N K. We can leverage congruence theory to help us move towards our goal but ensuring we work on our beliefs as well as our behaviours. One way of doing this is to make a list of current limiting beliefs you have that are going to hinder you getting to your goal, create a corresponding list of empowering beliefs, then work on changing the most impactful one. To change your belief, affirm the new belief as often as you can, and model your behaviours around the belief. For example, if you want to bring more abundance into your life, switch your thoughts when you see something you would like from, “I could never afford that,” to “how can I afford that?” Literally step into your new self-identity and start behaving in a way that is aligned with it. Affirm morning and night, and also affirm when you’re performing your new behaviours, things like telling yourself how much you enjoy feeling fit and healthy and making great food choices as you pick a healthy meal option over cake.
Here’s a brief run down of how to set resolutions that last. • Make sure you have an emotional connection to your goal • Make your goal specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time bound • Remember to celebrate the wins • Model your new empowering beliefs and work on them relentlessly • Practice future rehearsal
This stuff is not easy, but over time you build new neural pathways for your new beliefs, your behaviours become more and more automatic, and you’re goal becomes simply your lifestyle and achieving it becomes easier. So, this new year set a goal you have an emotional connection to. Spend time exploring why you want that goal. The emotion of achieving it is what will motivate you when you’re flagging. Spend time breaking your goal down into a specific, achievable, realistic and time bound action plan, and celebrate your small milestone wins. Figure out what the future you, how has already achieved your goal, is like. What is their self-identity? What are their beliefs? What are their behaviours? Then start living aligned with these. Work on the mindset part with your affirmations and believe change as hard (if not harder) than the physical actions. Practice future rehearsal - picture yourself having achieved your goal. Allow yourself to experience the emotions, sights, sounds, smells of the future you. Doing this primes your subconscious for future success. Start enjoying life aligned with the new you!

The Mojo gents are kicking off the new year with some good news: building laws are changing. And this means, if you’re planning on building or refurbishing a house, the process will become a whole lot faster… “One of the biggest challenges for any investor is TIME, and there always seems to be something that delays the construction process,” says Jacob. “However, with the implementation of the Responsible Declaration Law, it means construction projects can now begin work as soon as the architect’s project is completed and the building tax is paid.”
What does LPO (Licencia Primera Ocupación) mean? LPO is the administrative license required for habitation, or use, once a building is completed. This document is also

What are the general challenges encountered when starting a building project? Starting a new building project in Spain is always challenging. It involves many different aspects such as design, construction, financing and most important of all, compliance with the local planning laws and regulations. The viability of the entire project depends on this last factor more than anything else, as where you intend to build will need to have the necessary classification and the design will be subject to size, height, footprint and other limitations.

essential when it comes to legalising and registering the new property. Not having it will impede the property sale and many other things, such as mortgages or tourist license for holiday rental allowance.
A property might be physically completed but it won’t legally exist until it obtains the mandatory LPO. In the past 20 years, obtaining the LPO from the local Town hall has been, in many cases, difficult and frustrating. It’s a common nightmare for many property developers in this country, who have had to wait for months, and sometimes years, to finally obtain this extremely important document.

How does the new Responsible Declaration Law improve the process? The Responsible Declaration Law should simplify and speed up the entire procedure greatly, just by avoiding the Town Hall’s intervention and transferring the authority to the project’s architect. It makes a lot more sense, as the architect is the one who has been supervising and directing the construction project from the beginning, has the necessary knowledge of the law, and now has the power to legalise it.
How does this new law benefit people who want to invest in new constructions or developments? LPO benefits from this but also any form of renovation works intended on existing projects that do not involve extensions or structural alterations. In practice, this enables an investor to buy an existing property and start renovating it entirely (internal and externally) as soon as the architect’s project is completed, the local building tax is paid, and the builder is ready.
How does this affect the sale of second-hand properties? Second hand properties to be renovated are the ones that benefit most from this legal novelty, as they are the only ones that can obtain the building license via responsible declaration.
Which buildings can present a responsibility declaration for their first occupation? All of them, as long as they match the building license, either granted by the Town Hall or obtained by Responsible Declaration, and are duly signed off on completion by the project director, usually an architect or a team formed by the architect and an ‘aparejador’ (quantity surveyor) -, whenever they are both legally required, (usually new builds and big renovations)

Vista Lago Residences has won in two categories in this year’s European Property Awards: Best in Spain for “Architectural Multiple Residence” and Best in Spain for “Residential Development”. These wins automatically nominate Vista Lago for the upcoming “Best in Europe” title in these categories. Winning here would set the development up for the grand final “Best in the World” awards at the beginning of 2022. The International Property Awards are the accepted benchmark for excellence in all sectors of the property industry worldwide, covering categories ranging from the design, construction and presentation of properties and developments to architectural and interior design, real estate and marketing. Candidates enter at national, regional and international levels, in that order. The awards, founded in 1993 by Stuart Shield, publisher of the International Property and Travel Magazine, describes them as similar to the “Stirling Prize for Architecture, but supercharged.” Vista Lago Residences is the result of the very successful collaboration between the
architectural and interior design company UDesign and the development company BRIGHT, whose world-class designs have already won the Best in Spain and Best in Europe in the same Property Awards in 2019 with the one-of-a-kind Villa Alcuzcuz. In that case, the awards were in the “Architecture Single Residence” category. This year’s win is, in fact, a double for Vista Lago, in that the Architectural Multiple Residence award went to UDesign as the architects and the Residential Development award was for BRIGHT as developers.
Design for Living So what’s all the fuss about? What’s the big deal in another luxury development on the Costa del Sol? What makes Vista Lago different from all the others? The answer would fill a book on luxury residential architecture in Southern Europe in the 21st century, but we’ll explain it in fewer words.
BRIGHT and UDesign joined forces when BRIGHT’s CEO, Michael Rodziewicz, asked his counterpart in UDesign, Jason Harris, for help in designing his home in Marbella. Both men shared the same mission in life: to bring high-end residential architecture and design to the Costa del Sol at a level that had not existed before. Rodziewicz brought a lifetime of experience in the luxury development field and Harris contributed the proven skills in creative design that he and his team had built up over the years in Marbella. The extraordinary success of the collaboration is now evident.

The short answer is design. Not simply the appearance, inside and out, of each of the Vista Lago villas, but design in the broadest sense of the word. Architectural design, interior design, environmental design, sustainable design, technical design: design for living. All aspects of Vista Lago, both as an entire development and as 18 separate and individually designed homes, have been design-led at the highest level possible in the world today. The result is what the fuss is all about. Michael Rodziewicz, BRIGHT’s CEO explains the company’s design-led approach, “We think in terms of design, always. Then we have the materials and how they are used. Natural, as much as possible, used in a way that is bang up to date in use and manufacturing process, enhancing the minimalist design, inside and out, to the maximum. This means, not only beautiful to the touch and sight but long-lasting and sustainable, cutting maintenance costs to the minimum.
Each of the villas is in the process of becoming BREEAM certified, by which all are audited by independent experts to ensure that they meet the quality and performance standards of the scheme in the areas of energy efficiency, land use, waste and water usage, technical innovation regarding electricity and water conservation, climate control, lighting and other areas too numerous to mention here. Winning international awards may not be new to the UDesign/BRIGHT partnership, but it is not something they tire of, and certainly not a reason for them to rest on our laurels. Andres Valencia, prodigy child with his art collection
One of the most stand out moments at the annual art fair was the 10-year old artist prodigy Andres Valencia, who ended the week with a sold out gallery. The young, San Diego-based contemporary artist is the youngest artist to present his work at the Art Miami fair, and claims to be inspired by cubism, Picasso and George Condo, his favourite painter. One of the paintings from his collection caught the eye of actress Sofia Vergara, and “The Wolf of Wall Street” author Jordan Belfort, purchased one of Valencia’s paintings too. Nick Korniloff, executive director of Art Miami, told the Post that in his 30 years in the art world, “he never witnessed someone this young so talented.”
CONTEMPORARY ART AT RED DOT MIAMI Visiting our friends from The Gallery Steiner at Red Dot Miami was another highlight of the visit to Miami Art Week. The Gallery Steiner is a modern art gallery in heart of Vienna, led by Michelle, Corinna and Dominic Steiner, and has established itself as a meeting point for qualified art collectors and a hub for internationally recognized modern artists. I had the great pleasure of meeting the US artist Io Rasa and view her artwork capturing emotions in the form of female expressions. Some of my favourite pieces from her collection were Resilience, Silenced and Reflections of the Unknown.
NFT ART Given that the rise of NFTs happened over the pandemic, there have been very few in-person gatherings of this community. At Art Basel Miami, however, thousands of NFT and crypto enthusiasts descended for the art festival, which became a major sandbox for NFT art. Miami-based Palm Tree Crew collaborated with MoonPay, a leader in the cryptocurrency space, hosting an event which included a large display of NFT’s purchased through MoonPay’s platform and a live DJ set from Martin Garrix and Kygo himself, co-founder of Palm Tree Crew. This was quite the celebration of art, culture and technology, three pillars quickly making up the Magic City.

An NFT is a piece of digital content or data linked to a blockchain (or digital ledger), providing it with proof of ownership—it can be a JPEG, video, an audio file or music. In other words, NFTs are tokens that we can use to represent ownership of unique items. They can only have one official owner at a time and they’re secured by the Ethereum blockchain. The Bored Ape Yacht Club is a collection of 10,000 NFTs, each depicting an ape with different traits and visual attributes. It’s one of the most prestigious NFT collections in the world, and the Bored Ape doubles as a Yacht Club membership card, granting access to members-only benefits. At the moment, the price of entry - that is, the cheapest you can buy a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT for - is 52 ether, or $210,000.

Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2022 fashion show at Miami Art Week
Louis Vuitton started the week on a high note with its first ever US fashion show, but the sudden death just two days earlier of its 41-year-old legendary designer Virgil Abloh turned the show into a sombre yet whimsical celebration of life attended by Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Bella Hadid, among others. The fashion show displayed some of their most remarkable looks going into the 2022 Spring/Summer season, and such was the evidence that Abloh’s fingerprints had been on so many different areas of art — fashion, architecture, music – that his spirit could be seen throughout the whole of Miami Art Week. In Wynwood, graffiti artist Alec Monopoly painted an angelic Abloh mural within 24 hours of his passing while the Rubell Museum exhibited a Maybach designed by Abloh’s Off-White fashion label and Mercedes-Benz. In Virginia Key, the site of Abloh’s final Vuitton show, the French fashion house paid tribute to a man who, in July, became the most powerful Black executive in the luxury goods market. And in Miami’s Design District, “Thank you, Virgil,” was painted on a building next to a display of three large statues of models wearing Virgil Abloh designs. As an interior designer, it was also super interesting to discover the 2022 Louis Vuitton Furniture Collection, displayed at the Design District. Some of my favourite pieces were the Blossom Stool, the Ribbon Dance two seater and the Petal Chair.

DIOR This year’s Art Basel saw a number of luxury fashion houses eager to show off their new furniture and Dior Maison invited seventeen artists to reinterpret one of its iconic emblems: the Medallion Chair. A symbol of Louis XVI style that Christian Dior chose as soon as he founded his House, in order to seat guests at his fashion shows in a “sober, simple and above all classic and Parisian” décor, as he recounted in his memoirs.
Designers such as Sam Baron, Nacho Carbonell, Pierre Charpin, Dimorestudio, Khaled El Mays, Tokujin Yoshioka and Pierre Yovanovitch offered their visions and artistic and cultural sensibilities to reconceive this object of desire with boundless creativity. A quick stop at the Dior Café rooftop at Miami’s Design District was also a must to take a quick pause from all the creative stimulus!
CHANEL Chanel collaborated with artist Es Devlin for a monumental sculptural installation in the Miami Design District to celebrate 100 years of its iconic fragrance. Entitled “Five Echoes,” the multisensory experience included lights, a sculptural labyrinth, and more than 1,000 shrubs and trees that were donated to Miami-Dade County for replanting after the exhibition closed. Superstar Rosalía performed at the opening VIP dinner on the Friday night, which was also attended by Pharrell Williams, Whitney Peak, and Joe Jonas among other special guests.

T
he best way to make the most of the views a plot has to offer is to build a glasshouse on it. Some architects have actually done this, the most notable being Philip Johnson, but his iconic Glass House, built in 1948, offers views of a stone wall and the nearest trees on private woodland. Most of us prefer longer views, especially if the plot happens to be on high ground close to the Marbella coastline, and of course, most of us would prefer more privacy. When Jason Harris, Creative Director and CEO of UDesign, first stood on the site of what was to become Villa Nabu and looked around him, he knew he was on one of the most beautiful and unique

plots in the world with views to match. He and his team would have to do justice to it, without building a glasshouse. We spoke to Jason about how much the plot dictated the design, and the importance of the views that nature provided. What he said gives us a fascinating insight into residential architecture design in an area that allows for such magnificent views, and how a team of award-winning architects and designers go about building a villa on such a plot. So we decided to break the article into three parts running over three issues, the first of which is mainly the location of the villa and the views it provides.

The house is Villa Nabu, designed for a plot on the Real de La Quinta residential estate in the hills above Marbella, and this is what Jason said about it:

Due south-west is Gibraltar, south is Africa, west is the beautifully located La Zagaleta estate and east is Marbella and La Concha mountain, and all these view are totally different from each other. It would have been criminal to have designed on such a plot without the design being subject to the location.”

“The key view – difficult to pinpoint in this case – is La Concha, given how much you see of it and how stunning it can be at all times of the day throughout the year. That’s why we designed the formal lounge around this view. Although the same could be said of every room in the house, the lounge is where the family spends most time while inside the house, and we actually have a second lounge area in the kitchen. The main living room is split into two areas, one being the formal lounge with east and south views, and the other being the kitchen with west and south views. These occupy the footprint of the house, so you don’t just have La Concha to your left in the formal lounge, but also have sofas facing the sea to the south. The infinity pool wraps around this part of the villa, so looking out you see water all around, with the pool surface merging into the blue Mediterranean. It’s as if you were floating on water. Then you have the mountain on the other side, all in one room.” “Time of day, and night, and the weather, changes the views dramatically. Sometimes the clouds form shadows that sweep along La Concha, so it’s very much how the mountain reacts to the weather, especially the sunset. It’s the same on the south view, where the sea changes colour day to day, from shiny grey to bright blue to darker colours, depending on the day and how it changes from hour to hour. We wanted, in our design, to allow residents to experience nature all around them, right through the day. While we have more sunshine here than in any other part of Europe, no two days are the same. Sometimes you see Gibraltar and the mountains of Africa as if they were just down the road, and sometimes the haze creates much greater distance, to such an extent that you see not much further than the immediate coastline. But on a clear night you can see the lights of Tangier.” “The interior design and decoration of the house is subject to the views. It’s a high lounge, measuring 5.5 metres, and the furniture is low. Everything in the house complements the views, from the simplicity of its minimalist architecture to the low-key contrast of tones throughout the inside. The tall glass walls allow you to see all of La Concha mountain, not just part of it,

and where a normal window was impossible on one side of the dining room, large roof windows were built instead. The kitchen looks out on a beautiful 180-degree south view, which also takes in Africa and Gibraltar, and La Zagaleta on the west side.” “Yes, there are beautiful locations all over the world, but you will not find anything better than this. It’s quite rare to find a plot in the Marbella area that has not just great middle and longdistant views, but also wonderful immediate views, over wild mountain terrain, golf course, lake and sea, and all within fifteen minutes of Marbella town centre. Starting out, we all just sat here looking in all directions, sizing up the views and how to make the most of them, and we did that morning, noon and night. My last thought, when the design process had ended, was to think: “Oh my goodness, how on earth are we going to match this in the future?”

The first generation Macan GTS of 2016 was powered by a 360hp, 2,997cc V6 with one turbocharger on either side of its engine. Positioned between the 340hp Macan S with which it shared its uprated engine and the 400hp, 3,604cc Turbo, the GTS was lauded as the sweet spot of the range with a fine balance between performance, ride and handling. The latest GTS replaces the Turbo as the flagship Macan with a healthy 440hp between 5,700 and 6,600rpm from the 2,894cc bi-turbo V6. The turbochargers of this new generation V6 are located between the cylinder-heads in a ‘hot-side-inside’ arrangement that dramatically shortens the intake tracts for better throttle response. This also keeps the hottest components high up in the airflow stream while reducing the overall width of the engine package.
The versatility of this V6 motor is shown by its use across the Cayenne and Panamera ranges where it is offered in a range of outputs from 330hp to 440hp achieved by way of ECU software programming. Probably the most cost-efficient way to maximise comparatively expensive engine hardware, this tuning method also applies to the twin-turbo V8 motor in the Panamera GTS, which shares its engine with the Turbo.

Of course the differing packaging of the Cayenne, Macan and Panamera all necessitate intake and exhaust designs unique to each bodyshell. The Panamera has the lowest and longest bonnet line of the trio, requiring a very different intake system while the Cayenne requires a different throttle arrangement for its own unique package. While fuelling and ignition are of course bespoke to each variant, the Macan GTS features a peak boost pressure of 1.3 bar with no overboost facility. The 7-speed PDK transmission is exactly the same unit across the board with the shorter gear ratio set as used on the GTS and the entry-level 265hp, 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder Macan. The 380hp Macan S (2.9 litre bi-turbo V6) has slightly longer gearing in line with its role as a more relaxed, less enthusiastoriented model. Where the transmissions in other Porsche models come from ZF the Macan’s PDK gearbox is the VW Group’s own unit. Its rated maximum torque capacity is billed as 550Nm, although a Porsche engineer told me this is more like 570Nm. It is no surprise that the Macan GTS makes exactly 550Nm from 1,900 to 5,600rpm. While the Macan may appear compact compared to big brother Cayenne, it is a solidly built vehicle that tips the scales at 1,960kg (DIN) in GTS form. However, with its permanent 4WD

system able to perfectly dispense the power and torque on tap, the GTS is able to produce acceleration numbers that would have been the province of many supercars from the turn of the 21st Century. The 0-100km/h sprint is covered in 4.5 sec, further shaved to just 4.3 sec with the Sport Chrono Package. The 160km/h mark is passed in 10.5 sec, which is remarkable for a blunt, heavy SUV when you consider that back in the mid-1980s any vehicle that could break 20 seconds to 160km/h was considered rapid. With a top speed of 272km/h it is just as well that Porsche provides strong stoppers for the GTS in the form of 360mm vented discs in front, with 330mm vented discs at the rear. There are two brake options over and above this, the first being Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) that offers better response, longer disc life and up to 90% less brake dust. PCCB ceramic brakes are the hard-core drivers’ choice, and of course have the added advantage of reduced unsprung weight. As we noted before, the original GTS set the sweet spot in the Macan range. Nothing has changed with this latest version, and only very fine adjustments were made to the suspension to optimise ride and handling performance with the latest generation of tyres developed in the interim.

With most rival machinery the ride quality differs dramatically between the basic steel spring and conventional damper set up and their air suspension option. That is not the case here because while the GTS has the option of air suspension, Porsche open their offer here with steel springs coupled to PASM adaptive damping.

This suspension system, which includes beefier anti-roll bars, also drops the ride height by 15mm over the stock Macan. However, should you order the air suspension option then the ride height is lowered by a further 10mm, while it can be raised for additional ground clearance in off-road driving. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus is an option.

Despite the potential for the huge 9.0J and 10.0J x 20-inch alloys wheels shod with 265/45ZR20 and 295/40ZR20 high performance rubber to confer a stiff ride, the brilliant PASM system mitigates this very convincingly. Thus, we would save the money and not bother with air suspension unless the self-levelling and variable ride height features were must haves for towing or negotiating offroad conditions. Black is the colour for the distinguishing features on Porsche’s GTS models, and this means dark backgrounds for the front and rear light clusters, alloy wheels and side panels. In the cabin, unless you specify the optional leather trim, the default GTS theme is graphite grey Alcantara on the seats and steering wheel, with red highlight stitching on the seats, dashboard and doors, and red stitched GTS logos on the headrests.
other compact SUVs feel like they are being forced to challenge the laws of physics using every mechanical and electronic trick in the book. With respect to visibility and safe stopping distance on a dry road, noone in his right mind should be able to find the limit of adhesion of a Macan GTS. It tracks round bends like it is on rails, and as we noted above feels like it was born to corner just as well as it will cruise on the autobahn all day long. The way a vehicle accelerates from rest and on the fly is just as important as the stopwatch numbers it generates. No matter how fast it is a car with an uninspiring soundtrack and an engine that is unwilling to spin heartily to its redline is unlikely to appeal to a keen driver.
The Macan is guilty of neither. had a mobile phone when that first became a thing which, though game-changing then, was a pale shadow of the tech marvels we take for granted some two decades later. Forget the high resolution camera, touchscreen or lightning-fast 5G, this thing only allowed you to store 10 text messages of 160 characters max. To read a new SMS you had to first perform triage on your inbox, choosing between deleting the heartfelt birthday message from your mum, the dodgy joke from your friend or the hot text from that person you met in the bar..... sorry mum.
I’m currently experiencing the 2.0 version of that dilemma as my Android smartphone has been telling me for the last week that I’m “Dangerously low on space”. The Danger aspect of it seems less of a life-and-death mortal peril and more of a “some gallery features may not be available” type danger, but it’s rocked my world nevertheless. From 64Gb of available storage, none remain. If I want to take a photo of my dog or child I first have to scour the near-bottomless gallery in which some features may not be available for a different photo of my dog or child or better still a photo of someone else’s dog, child or avocado brunch (thanks whatsapp) to delete. Of course whatsapp images are highly compressed so deleting someone else’s unsolicited share doesn’t free

up as much space as culling my own loved ones... Sophie’s choice indeed. The solution would be to back everything up to my desktop, wipe the storage and start afresh. Take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure. (sick Aliens reference dude– Ed.) Only my desktop is nearly full too, largely due to all the previous phone backups. Plus I’d probably be duplicating several Gb of data since I didn’t wipe everything last time I transferred. It’s not like I’ve got time in my busy modern life to sift through endless digital archives, removing everything that’s blurry, underexposed, duplicated or brunch, but I can’t just delete everything in case my dog or child were looking particularly sweet and one day I will have that time in my extremely busy modern life to actually sit down and reminisce. What’s that? “Delete Whatsapp”?! Don’t be ridiculous. I’m not scratching around in the dirt writing 160 character texts again and paying 30p to send a picture message like a fucking caveman. Huh? “Lower the camera resolution to save space”?! What, so in five years when screen resolution is Ultra 12K i’m watching a video of the dog chasing the child that looks like pacman?
“Use the cloud”?? How big’s this cloud mate? How much does it cost cos I take a lot of videos of the dogchild, plus I don’t want to pay monthly for a cloud full of pictures of other people’s fucking avocados. And what’s the door policy? Will I have to remember yet another password, cos my brain’s like my phone mate, it’s full. Some gallery features may not be available. Did I mention how extremely busy my extremely fucking busy modern life is? “DNA”??? What’s that, Do Not Ask? I won’t. Oh actual DNA? The stuff they use to catch perverts and make Jurassic Parks? Ok, please elaborate in an overly succinct manner as this double spread is also running out of space and I point blank refuse to cut the Aliens reference..... ...Turns out I’m not the only one hoarding digital wealth (or tat, depending on your subjectivity). In 2020, the total amount of data created, captured, copied and consumed in the world was estimated at 59 zettabytes - that’s 59 trillion gigabytes – or 921 billion, 875 million times the storage capacity of my phone (the one with the camera). We’re drowning in tweets, emails, youtube vids and instagram shares and despite construction averaging 50 new hyperscale (more than 5000 server) data centres annually to try
to accommodate what’s not held on personal devices, with an estimated compound growth rate on those 59 zettabytes of 61%, like so much else in our extremely fucking busy modern fucking lives (EFBMFL), it’s unsustainable economically and ecologically. The Citadel in Nevada guzzles 815 megawatts of power whilst The China Telecom Data Centre alone is a square kilometre in size. Now imagine you could contain all the world’s data in a car-sized host. That’s where scientists are betting on DNA as a future storage medium. Where digital storage reframes text, images, or any other kind of information as a series of
0s and 1s, that very same information can be encoded to DNA using the four nucleotides (A, T, G, and C) which constitute its genetic code. DNA is stable and, once synthesized, requires no input energy (such as saaay, 815 megwatts) to sustain it. It’s 1000 times denser than flash memory, meaning a zettabyte of data could fit in the palm of your hand. MIT researches have already demonstrated proof of concept by encoding, then retrieving 20 images from a DNA strand. (It’s unclear how
many of these were selfies, but for real-world application let’s assume the majority) The process isn’t cheap, fast or easy – yet. Tech rapidly progresses in orders of magnitude. 10 text message max?!... There’s much, much more to the story and it’s all fascinatingly Googleable so go fire up those servers. I’d apologise for only including about 10 percent cogent information and 90% waffle but then given the subject matter, i’d say that’s right on trend. At least it wasn’t a photo of my brunch.

New year, new hope for Recently, Triple A elected Elise Dunweber as the new president of the animal shelter covering the areas of Marbella & San Pedro. Now with a new team in place they have put together a restructure proposal which will hopefully create a more positive environment and future for the coast’s abandoned dogs and cats. Working with animals is something Elise is extremely passionate about having been surrounded by them her whole life. As a patron of an animal welfare foundation she also works lobbying Government and educating people on many aspects of animal welfare around the world. Since moving to Spain full time Elise has personally struggled coming to terms with the enormous difference in the standards of animal welfare here. Namely the huge diversity between the animal lovers here and those who simply view them as objects, irrelevant, or a nuisance.

This can be a very rewarding role. Fostering can be caring for young puppies that are too tiny to be unvaccinated in the shelter, or old, injured or more vulnerable dogs that benefit from being in a quieter calmer environment. Under new management, they now hope to achieve many of the ideas that have been suggested in recent years, but they urgently need your help. Elise met her first adopted dog, who was abandoned by her previous owner, two years ago, after finishing a shift at the shelter. It was a hectic day with so many dogs and cats arriving and there was no room for them all. She was tied to a post as there was simply no space for her. So, she took her home and bathed her, she was covered in mites and the water ran black. Elise made a mental note then that if she ever got the chance she would do her best to try and make sure no other dog was left in this sorry state.
The charity are of course limited with space but the new committee intend to do their best with what they have… to that end they have started a campaign to get special temporary free standing kennels so that each incoming dog has a safe space to call their own while they await assessment or adoption or collection (in the case of a lost dog). They will also use the kennels for a “recovery space” for castrated dogs to have somewhere less hectic to recuperate after surgery. Any company, group or individual is welcome to donate for a kennel which they will order along with a sponsorship plaque. Also desperately needed are funds to cover medical expenses and basic overheads. Any new fundraising ideas and suggestions are also most welcome!

Whether you are trying ‘Veganuary’, attempting to make a permanent change, or even just want to eat less meat in general, the transition into a plant based diet can be difficult. As someone who has been through the process twice, I know how hard it can be to adjust to the vegan lifestyle. However, since veganism has increased by 360 per cent in the last decade in Great Britain, this herbivorous diet is becoming more and more popular, meaning you are not alone in your battle to become a plant powered person.
With most chain restaurants offering vegan options or even dedicated menus, you will quickly find that the adjustment is not as big as expected. However, just in case you find your eyes wandering towards the left-over Christmas cheese in the fridge, here are a few easy steps to follow in order to guarantee success.
Do Your Research
Whilst veganism is growing in every aspect, this does not mean that just because famous people choose this diet, so should you. Making an informed decision is crucial to success, as you must understand the consequences of cutting out some major food groups from your everyday dishes. Whether it be for health, environmental or animal rights reasons make sure you have one. Acting on impulse will only lead to regret, and so you must be sure this is the right decision for you.
Staple Dishes
Even before I went vegan, I was looking for and exploring plant based recipes that I knew I could cook and enjoy. Perhaps begin with ‘Meat-Free Monday’, using this scheme to discover some vegan dishes that, once you make the full transition, will become staple meals in your diet. With the internet being a source of thousands of ways to ‘veganise’ all your old favourites, including my blog!
Nobody/Nothing is Perfect
Let’s face it, there are bound to be minor slip ups along the way. If you wake up in the morning and realise you may have ordered cheesy chips with mayo last night or had a kebab (it happens) do not fret. For most people turning vegan doesn’t happen overnight, and it will take a while before you stop craving animal products entirely. So, if you find yourself ridden with guilt or regret, remember that life-style changes take time.
Hopefully, if you follow these steps you will soon come to realise that veganism can be both very exciting and easy. I have three books to choose from - the 7 Day Vegan Challenge being the one that fits the ‘how to go vegan bill’ the best. All of the books are available on AMAZON.

Here are two recipes that I love any time of year, but especially in the colder months. They are both easy and tasty and are perfect to kick-start your vegan journey this January.
Plant Wellington
SERVINGS: 4-6 DIFFICULTY: Easy This is the dish that I cooked on Christmas Day! It’s rich, filling and full of healthy goodness, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. INGREDIENTS For the Pastry: 110g chickpea flour 110g buckwheat flour 65ml olive or rapeseed oil, plus extra for brushing 100ml water pinch of salt
Flip the roll over so that the pastry joint is on the base, and transfer to a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper.
Brush the top of the pastry with olive oil then score the top in a criss cross pattern and place in the oven for 30 minutes.
For the Filling: 400g mushrooms, roughly chopped 2 carrots, diced 1 leek, halved then sliced 1 tsp salt 25g oats 1 tin (400g) black beans, drained 180g kale, steamed ½ red chilli, diced 185g plant based kimchi olive oil, for frying
Winter Pear and Almond Cake
DIRECTIONS
INGREDIENTS
Pre-heat the oven to 180ºC.
150 grams of Vegan butter (room temperature) 150 grams of caster sugar 130 grams of almond flour/ground almonds 140 grams of self raising flour (or gluten free self-raising flour) 1 tbsp cornstarch 100 ml of plant milk 1 tsp of vanilla powder 2 pears sliced (cut horizontally into 4/6 pieces) 1 tbs of brown sugar 1 tsp of cinnamon
To make the pastry, mix together the chickpea flour, buckwheat flour, oil, water and salt, until incorporated. Knead it on a floured surface for a few minutes until it comes together nicely into a ball. Place in a bowl, cover with a tea towel and leave in the fridge for 30 mins. Meanwhile, make the filling by heating a generous amount of olive oil in a large pan. Add the leeks, carrots, mushrooms, chilli and salt. Keep stirring and cook over a medium heat for 10-15 minutes until nicely browned, then add to a blender along with the black beans, and pulse until mostly combined but still has some texture. Empty into a bowl, add the oats and mix well. Remove the dough from the fridge after 30 minutes, and using a rolling pin, roll out on a floured surface into a rectangle about ½ cm thick. Add a layer of steamed kale to cover the base of the dough (leaving approx 1 inch border around the edges), then spread the blended mixture on top. Add a layer of kimchi on top, then gently roll the pastry around the filling to join the long and short edges.
SERVINGS: 6-8 DIFFICULTY: Easy
This is an easy and quick cake that you can whip up in less than an hour, perfect for a morning or afternoon snack or when you have those unexpected guests popping over for a cup of tea. It can also be made gluten free so you know that everybody will love it and for an even more wintery taste you can throw in some additional spices like ground cardamom or cloves. Get cosy in front of the fire with this one. pears are and arrange with the tiniest bit in the middle and the thicker bit of the pear touching the edge of the cake tin. Gently push the pear pieces down so that they are surrounded by pillowy cake batter. Sprinkle it with brown sugar and cinnamon on top. Place in the middle of the oven and cook for 30 to 40 minutes. I usually switch the oven off after 30 minutes and let the cake cook on after heat. Once cooked let the cake cool down. Serve with plant cream or custard and enjoy!
DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Start off by creaming the butter and caster sugar in a bowl until it’s all nice and soft and fluffy. Then add all the other ingredients (except the pears) gradually and mix well until you have a creamy consistency. W
ith so many events occurring over the festive period, it’s always a challenge to procure enough office volunteers to cover them all. That is until a food review at the hottest table in town rolls around and, as if by magic, diaries suddenly clear and hands shoot skywards like the first day of school. Boho Club on the Golden Mile has firmly established itself as the go-to for exquisite cuisine for the discerning diner and our latest visit certainly didn’t disappoint.

I can’t honestly say I would ever choose cold corn soup with avocado and pickled vegetables from a menu, but I can absolutely declare that I would now pick it above any starter I ate in 2021 DIVINE! Lobster gyozos paired with wild mushrooms, accompanied by a sea urchin consommé were the next delicacies on offer, followed by an equally impressive salmonete of red mullet in an onion soup with ginger puree and payoyo cream cheese.
So far the standard was off the scale and could presumably only head south… or not. Head chef Diego Del Río was merely posturing in preparation for what was to follow. If any reader has a bucket list of food, I would strongly suggest adding Iberian pork with Gorgonzola rice and pickled pear to it. I confess I have enjoyed this dish before as a frequent paying guest of the restaurant and have since paired this “king of cheese” at home with everything from chops to sausage meat pasta

Beginning to fear no other food would ever be acceptable for my newly precocious palette, a delightful-looking dish of “Goat shoulder “ was promptly positioned as our next course. At this stage I had to admit to my dining companion that in a previous life I had once owned a pet goat, (Bella) and would not be partaking in this round of revelry as a show of solidarity for my old friend. She on the other hand shared no such qualms and gleefully gobbled it all up. With scant space left for dessert and all remaining belt holes utilized, chef Del Río closed the show with a perfectly executed lemon meringue pie, accompanied by homemade pistachio ice cream. Utterly delightful. In 15 years of reviewing restaurants on this coast, Boho Club sits right at the top. Sometimes the warm feeling you get in your tummy from volunteering is just great food.
