orn in Worcestershire, England on February 1st, 1994, Harry Styles was raised by his mother following his parents’ divorce. Growing up in Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, Harry and three of his friends formed a band named White Eskimo during their school years, often performing for their peers. Fame arrived in 2010, when Harry, just 16 years old, competed in the 7th season of The X Factor, singing Stevie Wonder’s ‘Isn’t She Lovely,’ at his audition. Disappointingly, he was cut before the finals, but that cut turned out to be the start of his phenomenal career. In a surprise move by The X Factor judges, Nicole Scherzinger and

Their debut album, Up All Night, became the fastest selling album of 2011 and that year saw them commence their first UK concert tour before their big arrival in the US in February 2012.

As the youngest member of the group, Harry became a firm favourite with his curly hair and sweet but cheeky demeanour. One Direction’s debut single, ‘What Makes Your Beautiful’, reached number one in the UK singles chart after becoming the most pre-

One Direction’s debut U.S single charted at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming the highest debut for a British act since 1998; their album followed, making them the first UK group to have a debut album reach number one in the USA. The One Direction phenomenon continued with their additional albums also debuting at number one on the Billboard charts and their fanbase continuing to grow. In 2017 Styles released his epic solo single, Sign of the Times, and his accompanying self-titled album, both debuting at the number one spot. The same year he made his feature film debut in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war thriller, Dunkirk, as a solider named Alex. In 2018 it was revealed he was dating model Camille Rowe, but sadly that came to an end within a year.

It was a further two years after his first solo hit before the next single, Lights Up, arrived in October 2019, shortly before the release of his sophomore solo album Fine Line and the announcement of his upcoming 2020 Love on Tour. Aaron Dessner produced the LP at his upstate New York studio and featured sessions musicians Josh Laufman on guitar and drummer J.T. Baites. Lead vocalist Zach Williams spoke about the collaborative nature of the album sharing, “We already had a friendship with Aaron and a strong, shared understanding of our musical vision. It’s really important to us to be part of a community of musicians. We like the collaborative, communal way of making something. Aaron showed us a new way of trusting and collaborating. According to lead vocalist, Billie Joe Armstrong, the album is “The new soul, Motown, glam and manic anthemic. Punks, freaks and punishers!” also revealing that the lyrics are about, “the life AND death of the party” and a “lifestyle of not giving a f**k.”

Sibling duo, Lydia and Laura Rogers aka The Secret Sisters release their latest album this month, following 2017’s You Don’t Own Me Anymore. The new album includes the previous hit, ‘Cabin’ which begins as a doleful meditation on grief and loss building to an urgent and chilling climax. Producer Dan Snaith revealed that the album was pulled together from over 900 draft ideas, “I record music every day,” he explains, “and I love it – as much or more than I have always done. I feel very lucky – the thrill has never left me.” The album will follow 2014’s Our Love and will feature songs, ‘You and I’ and ‘Home’ previously released.

PARENTING

EDUCATION 21st CENTURY here is a growing awareness amongst educationalists, employers and parents that the way we educate children is no longer relevant for the 21st century. Most educational systems around the world remain steadfast in the industrial era where the primary aim was for children to memorize facts and figures, to be controlled with bells, punishment and award and undergo regular testing so to obtain an academic qualification when they left school. Whilst this has largely been successful for the past 150 years, the world has changed beyond all recognition in the last decade with the advent of the internet, increased use of personal computers, the founding of Google and

28

the launch of social media platforms. Today there is increasing development and use of Artificial Intelligence, 5G technologies and ever sophisticated algorithms, robotics and the emergence of digital nomads. As society, personal lifestyle and the workplace is now very different, it is

essential that our children also learn and acquire a different set of skills beyond just academics if they are to become happy and successful citizens. Today our children need to know how to apply knowledge to real life situations using critical thinking/ problem solving skills, collaboration, creativeness and selfmanagement as well as being adaptable, resilient and to be lifelong learners. Conversely, there has existed a type of education that fulfills many of these attributes which was developed over 100 years ago by Italy’s first female doctor, Maria Montessori. This educational pedagogy is based on childcentered learning where the emphasis is on developing the whole child not only

The theory of UN-SCHOOLING Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.

Having delved into the world of first home-schooling whilst we were travelling for a year, and now, online-schooling whilst we consider our next steps in life, I have come to terms with the idea that the structure we all grew up with is not the only option. At first it feels as though you are a rebel, going against “the man and are somewhat anti-society, but the more you explore, research and network, the more real it becomes that there are thousands of like-minded people all over the world searching for new and improved answers to parenting and schooling. On Instagram there are many people who have a whole different viewpoint on the system and how we are doing damage to our children, rather than good, by sending them to conventional schools with small-minded principles. Most schools are struggling to keep up with the rapidly, ever-changing world. Not just in terms of technological advances but culture, politics, environment, health, diet, spirituality, religion, economics, gender values, social media, online life in general, and so the list goes on. How can a government-run curriculum possibly keep up with such huge and consistent global shifts when it is having to deal with said issues affecting the entire population in general? My husband recently opened my eyes even further to our personal present truth as we questioned where, or if, we want to set down roots here or somewhere new, by suggesting that the next project he decides to undertake needs to be something positive for our planet, something we can build alongside our children that they can witness and be encouraged by and at the same time really learning about sustainability, and protecting the world from further damage. The idea that they will not only be educated firsthand on a business project but that all such initiatives ought to to have an ecofriendly incentive, giving back to the world as well as earning from it, for me seems to be an invaluable life lesson. On top of this it could, if all goes well, become their legacy to inherit and continue whether it be an extension

30

of the same idea or their own having been born from a similar concept - it all promotes a promising future. We aren’t yet sure where this plan will take us, but I hope it will incorporate seeing a lot more of this world and making a positive change. Aside from this, the idea of un-schooling, extreme as it sounds, is one of allowing children to investigate the world, discover what it is about life they find interesting, what excites them, what ignites their very own fire, what makes them happy, what they enjoy focussing on, how they see the world and all its bounty. Not much of this is found in a classroom having to do the same things as everyone else. It sounds anti-everything we know which is why it is SO hard to find truth in and accept. But my eyes are far more open now to the idea that seeing is believing and self-expression leads to true humans and a far more interesting planet to live on! It is from this premise that I give you some of the most poignant quotes, comments and standpoints that I have come across of late to give some merit to my thought process.

Any child who can spend an hour or two a day with an adult he likes, who are interested in the world and like to talk about it, will, on most days, learn far more from that talk than they will in an entire week of school." John Holt

"None of the qualities that I pride so deeply, that have brought me so much joy, that have brought me so much professional success none of these qualities that make me who I am can be tested. Matt Damon

The problem is not people being uneducated, the problem is that they are educated just enough to believe what they are taught and not educated enough to question it.“ Anon

"The problem is not people being uneducated, the problem is that they are educated just enough to believe what they are taught and not educated enough to question it." Anon

"In the end, the secret to learning is so simple: forget about it. Think about only what you love. Follow it, do it, dream about it. One day you will glance up at your collection of Japanese literature, or trip over the solar oven you built, and it will hit you; learning was there all the time, happening by itself.

"If you want your children to bring original ideas into the world, you need to let them pursue their own passions, not yours." Adam Grant

Grace Llewellyn "Self-education is the only possible real education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child's nature.

"If you have told a child a thousand times and he still does not understand, it is not the child who is the slow learner."

Charlotte Mason

Walter Barbie

“"Birds fly, fish swim, man thinks and learns. Therefore, we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing or bullying. We do not need to keep picking away at their minds to make sure they are learning. What we need to do, all we need to do, is bring as much of the world as we can (to them); give children as much help and guidance as they ask for; listen respectfully when they feel like talking; and then get out of the way. We can trust them to do the rest." John Holt Some of this may make you ask what about this and what about that? However, what if, just what if this is the right way to go? Can you try and imagine it? Open up to that possibility…I’m not saying it is right, but…what if it is?! "All the world is my school, and all humanity is my teacher." George Whitman

"A lot of parents will do anything for their kids except let them be themselves." Banksy

Maybe it’s a bit like going back to our roots, to our native selves when we roamed the earth hunting, gathering and learning with the resources available. Now those resources are a far cry from those days but our essence hasn’t changed that much unless we let it, or prefer it to. We live in a world where we are very controlled, most things being decided for us by a minority (who we quite possibly wouldn’t agree with at all if we had an actual voice) so how do we go about unravelling the conditioning we have received for generations? How this is supposed to fit in entirely with society is not clear, but perhaps we need to pay more attention to the idea that our next generations may not need grooming in an institution because where we went to school, how we did in our exams, how good we were at sports is not what defines us, it is not who we are as adults, and we work for a long time to undo a lot of that which is ingrained in us as children. I don’t know about you, but if there was a way to begin to alter that, even a little bit for the greater good, for the freedom of mankind, I would choose it.

Would you? 31

GREAT ESCAPE Research has shown us that experiences drive happiness and fulfilment over material possessions. Sure that shiny new iPhone makes you smile for a while but then you adapt to it and soon it’s just another one of your things, soon to be cracked by a fall, replaced by an update or nicked by a bastard. By Ian Greenland

W

hat never loses value are experiences, especially now we can brag about share them with our friends from those same iPhones – new horizons, fond memories and jealous “likes” - the holy trinity. The added bonus is get enough online attention and every year Facebook will remind you of that time you bungee jumped with dolphins so you can go on believing you’re basically a 21st Century Dr. Dolittle ….”yeah, if Dr. Dolittle was James FUCKING Bond!” Of course going swimming in the sea is an “experience”, a brisk walk up a big hill or a bike ride in the country – these things are all good for mind, body and soul, but sometimes we want something a little different. The great outdoors is great and everything but indoors can be good too. One such option which has seen a steady surge in popularity over recent years is the live “Escape Room”, whereby players must work together to follow clues and solve puzzles in order to escape from a locked room before their time runs out. There’s usually an overarching narrative

32

or at least vibe to make the experience that much more absorbing.

THE FIRST LIVE ESCAPE ROOM ORIGINATED IN JAPAN IN 2007, HAVING EXISTED FOR THREE YEARS IN VIDEO GAME FORM. The concept gradually spread around Asia, though it wasn’t until the company Parapark realised it in Budapest, Hungary that Europeans took note. Though extremely popular with stag dos, hen parties and generally curious experience-hunters, the concept was rightly envisioned by Parapark as a team-building dream. Trust exercises in the big meeting room at work no longer cut it – Just because Alex the office temp stopped flirting with Bev in HR long enough to stop you falling backwards, communication, workplace synergy and productivity are not going to skyrocket. Not unless you’re locked in a room together and forced to cooperate to save each other from almost certain..... piss-taking. Corporate events are bread and butter for the industry. Successful players

must cooperate, communicate and delegate, along the way discovering which of their colleagues has the most logical brain, lateral creativity or coolest temperament. Plunged into a high stakes emergency, even a fictional one, it’ll soon be obvious who’s a team player and who’s out for themselves. You’d suspected all along it was Rob leaving dirty mugs in the staff kitchen but you couldn’t be sure until he left you to die at the hands of failed actors zombie’s when there was clearly enough room in that bank vault for two... Undoubtedly, we can trace some roots of the idea’s popularity back to 1997’s Cube or 2004’s Saw, cult horror films where would-be escapees got brutally mangled whilst attempting to free themselves from devilishly engineered kill-rooms, or more ghastly still, TV’s The Crystal Maze, where confinement meant you had to sit on your arse in a lapelled jumpsuit and listen to some bald c*nt play the harmonica on the other side of a styrofoam wall whilst your buddies had a genuine shot at scooping the top prize of half a day’s archery practise in Chipping Norton (They had to pay for their own travel and lunch, mind)

I personally experienced Budapest’s infamous original escape room with a group of total strangers five years ago during a business trip. It was a fun, involving hour of frantic searching and problem solving which brought a lot of nervy laughter and provided enough of a shared experience for us all to go for a drink or six afterwards. The in-game tension had dissipated somewhat when a member of staff was forced to pause the timer and enter one of the rooms halfway through to reboot the dodgy old computer we were attempting to obtain a clue from. It miiight have been possible to maintain the illusion of suspense if he hadn’t left the doors behind him wide open, revealing an unobstructed path back to the outside world. As he swore and fiddled distractedly with the nackered old PC, we were exchanging amused glances and

waving at curious passers by 10 feet away, but since we’d paid our money and were relatively sure we wouldn’t be murderized or forced to listen to a harmonica, we stayed put and eventually escaped legitimately. I’m not sure if our game had a clearly defined theme. From memory, there were lots of mirrors, wonky pictures on walls, some fake cobwebs, red lighting, a scary old doll (all old dolls are scary) and that malfunctioning computer, but in all honesty it was a bit of mish-mash.... Hold on a second; We chose to be there together but some stuff wasn’t working right and whilst we were determined to leave, when the opportunity arose, it became clear the people in charge were woefully inept and so we all stayed a bit longer and felt the need to get completely shitfaced when when the ordeal was over.... ok, looking back, the theme was Brexit.

The escape room concept lends itself to all sorts of thematic twists and turns, with role-play, murder mystery, sci-fi, prison drama, cannibal horror, swashbuckling piracy and many, many more popular tropes so don’t just sit indoors - get outdoors, and then pay to go indoors again and then try to get outdoors again... out doors. With over 5000 sites operating globally, there really is something for everyone.... except claustrophobics.

Y

ou only had to step foot inside La Sala during Veganuary to know that record amounts of people are interested in swapping meat for vegan alternatives. There are many reasons for the shift towards a more meatless future. For some it’s about animal welfare or doing their bit for climate change. For others it’s simply looking for healthier food options. So, what does technology have to do with meat and how will it affect our meatless future? Before we look into that, here’s a few facts to chew on… • The world’s population is expected to surge to 9.6 billion by 2050, leading to a 61% increase in food production. • China is the world’s largest consumer of meat, with protein consumption expected to rise by around 4% per year. • Antibiotics have been routinely used in the animal production process for the past 60 years, as they were shown to promote growth rate of livestock. • Global farming contributes around 6 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. NEW THINKING With all this in mind, innovative startups have already begun to fill the gap between the demand for meat products and fulfilling it, without ruining the planet or disrespecting animals in the process. These startups are using technology to engineer meat in labs or manufacture

it from plant-based products to look, taste and sometimes even ‘bleed’ like traditional steak or beef burgers. BEYOND MEAT Beyond Meat is one of the world’s biggest alternative protein brands who makes plant-based burgers and other products such as plant-based chicken and sausage. As well as being lower in saturated fats, Beyond Meat products promise greater or equal protein levels than their animal counterparts, using non-GMO ingredients. Their burgers are also claimed to use 99% less water and 93% less land compared to producing a traditional beef burger. In 2019, the company had a valuation of almost $1.5B and several famous faces have invested in public shares. IMPOSSIBLE FOODS Have you heard about or tried Burger King’s newly released Impossible Whopper? — a meatless variant of its most well-known Whopper burger and we can verify it takes as good (if not better) than the beef version. The company uses molecular engineering to create “bleeding” plant-based burgers that is nearly indistinguishable from meat. Impossible Food’s use of heme, an iron-rich molecule in animal proteins, has enabled it to replicate the “meaty” flavor. Pat Brown, CEO of Impossible Foods was quoted, “We think of it as meat made a better way … Meat today basically is made using pre-historic

4040

technology, using animals to turn plants into this very special category of food … But to your typical consumer … the value proposition of meat has nothing to do with its coming from an animal.” MEMPHIS MEATS San Francisco-based Memphis Meats is aiming to scrap the need to breed, raise and slaughter large numbers of animals by producing real meat from selfreproducing cells. The company debuted its first lab-grown meatball in 2016 and followed up with the world’s first cell-cultured chicken and duck in 2017. The company has more recently announced its intention to use the geneediting technique CRISPR, in order to help it develop its meat products with even less impact on the environment, and with less consumption of land and water. OPEN-SOURCE CLEAN MEAT Taking a different approach to a meatless future is Yuki Hanyu, founder of Tokyo-based Integriculture and nonprofit Shojinmeat Project. His companies are working to familiarize future generations to a meatless future through opensource tech. Hanyu is providing Japanese high school students with specially designed heated boxes that allow them to culture animal cells at home and grow them into edible meat-like products. The concept may seem a bit ‘out there’, but the Shojinmeat Project is looking to establish a bottom-up approach to meat development through crowdsourcing. Interested participants will be able to experiment with lab-grown meat and ultimately integrate it into their diets.

THE TECH SCENE

BENEFITS OF MEAT ALTERNATIVES ENVIRONMENT As we have learned, livestock is a major contributor to greenhouse gases. Alternative ways to fulfill the meat demand could reduce the negative environmental impact associated with traditional production. Reducing livestock could free up global cropland, decrease soil erosion, and relieve pressure on the world’s water supply. HEALTH The rising obesity rates could see more people turning to nutritious plant-based foods and avoiding heavily processed meats as a fast way to cut the calories. One of the main health benefits of meat alternatives though, will be the possibility of eliminating antibiotics from our food. ETHICS The meat industry has long been subject to ethical concerns behind meat production practices. A spike in the discussion of blockchain governing the food supply chain indicates an increasing desire for transparency around where our food comes from. Meatless consumption could end these ethical questions around meat consumption altogether.

IN THE NEAR FUTURE, THE MEAT VALUE CHAIN COULD BECOME KNOWN SIMPLY AS ‘CLEAN MEAT’ LABS WHICH TAKE THE PLACE OF INDUSTRIAL FARMS, FEED LOTS, AND SLAUGHTERHOUSES. HOWEVER, THERE IS STILL SOME WAY TO GO BEFORE IT MAKES IT ONTO OUR TABLE.

CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME Plant-based products and other protein sources may be growing in popularity, but lab-grown meat faces some tough obstacles. 1. Let’s face it, fake meat or lab-grown meat doesn’t sound appetizing. 2. High tech meat is expensive. It will remain priced as luxury goods for some time yet. 3. No one knows if it’s scalable to mainstream. 4. Is lab-grown meat really better for the environment? Lab technologies are usually powered by electricity, heating and other tools so it’s debatable. 5. The meat sector is a major employer, mainstream changes would see many jobs eliminated. As of now, artificial meat is still in the early stages. Regulatory responsibility for biotechnology in an animal-free ecosystem is yet to be established and the challenges are still being overcome. However, continued advances in genetic engineering and plant-based innovation will enhance the taste, flavor, and healthiness of meatless products. These technologies will also continue to expand across largely untouched meat and seafood products like pork, duck, fish, and eel. Regardless of the hurdles to a meatless future, alternative meat products are clearly growing, and capturing major attention worldwide.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

INTEND FOR THE NEXT DECADE TO BE

Maria Erving is a Transformational Teacher and Energy Healer and works with clients in the Marbella - Malaga area and online via Skype/Zoom. A transformational coaching and healing session can completely change the trajectory of your life in the most uplifting and empowering ways. Give yourself a gift for the new year and book a private session with Maria today:
 www.MariaErving.com/ SESSIONS

E D A C E D T S E B E H T E F I L R U O Y OF We have a brand-new decade in front of us, but instead of making New Year’s resolutions this year, I invite you to use the power of intention to make the next decade, the best years of your life. Before you do that, it’s great to take an inventory of your life. That way it becomes more obvious and clearer for you to see what you would like to achieve in this decade. We can all look back on the past ten years and find at least one or two defining moments that changed the trajectory of our life. Maybe one of yours was when you had your first child, or that you moved to another country, or maybe it was that you got married/divorced or started your own business. I invite you to think back, how old were you ten years ago? Where were you? Who were you with, what were you doing? Take your time with this and try to get a somewhat clear picture of the timeline from back then to the present day. I also suggest that you write all your answers down in a notebook. When you have a clear picture, ponder these two questions and answer them one at a time:

44

"What was my greatest growth experience during this past decade of my life?" ""What was my greatest growth lesson during those years?" AFTER YOU’VE ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS, NOW ASK: “If I could only keep one change from the past ten years, only one, and every other lesson/ change/transformation had to be forgotten, which change would I keep?” This can (but it doesn’t have to) be a change that was very difficult for you to make or live through, but now as you look back you may realize you wouldn’t dreaming of changing it. Don’t skip this question – you might be surprised what it reveals to you when you really look into it. Each decade has had its own defining moments and growth experiences and we can learn so much from them (even if they were challenging) by reflecting on them before we move on and forwards in our lives.

NEXT, ASK YOURSELF: “What were my 3-5 happiest days in the past decade?” Now that you have this new and deeper insight and your memory is fresher, how would you define the past decade of your life? Overall, what would you say it was primarily about, now that you think about it? And how would you like to define the next decade of your life, what few words would you want to use to describe it? What would you like your next decade to be like, and about?

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Look at life as an adventure and have the willingness and courage to move outside and beyond what has been before.

How about intending to make the next decade of your life the most fabulous one so far? If you had one wish come true this year, and one over the next decade, what would those wishes be? Think about that for a moment before you continue reading. Next, I invite you to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Relax your body, and in your relaxed state of being, in your meditation, imagine that you’re having a conversation with your older, much wiser self. Sit in front of him/her and look into their wise and loving eyes. He/she is older than you and has seen and experienced things that you don’t yet know, so take the opportunity to ask for advice and guidance now that you’re entering into this new year and brand-new decade. What advice is this older, much wiser version of yourself giving you about the journey ahead?
Pay attention and listen closely. When you have done that, also look into the future one year from now. See yourself a year from now in your meditation. It’s a couple of weeks after New Year’s Eve next year. Where are you? What are you doing? Look around and explore the image in

your mind and also look at you, how you look, the expression and look on your face. Do you look happy, confident?... what? And then approach yourself and ask for advice for the year of 2020. How would that future you – only one year from now – advise the you that you are now? What does he/she have to say to you about your new year and the path moving forward? What is the greatest advice they have to give you? When you have meditated on these things and you have received the answers and guidance, ask yourself:

"Knowing all that I know now, what can I do today to start creating 2020 and the next decade so that it can become the best years of my life?" When you become clear about what you need to do and you begin to take action, life will meet you and help you move forward into your new and improved future. When you sync up with life this way, by providing clarity based on what you’ve learned from the past, the world will start to mirror a more empowered way of life back to you. When you’re in flow with life, you live in harmony with yourself and the Universe, and from that alignment, your truest (and best) life unfolds.

“I am so grateful to be sober and that my life is worth something again” Former police officer Niall, now 60, lived a life of drinking and cheating in his marriages. Until one day he was given a final ultimatum that totally transformed his life… “I worked in the Royal Navy, the police and for the ambulance service. I married at 18 and had a son. As a father I was useless, more interested in myself, and so I neglected my responsibilities. My childhood was unhappy. Many nights I sat outside pubs listening to my parents living it up inside. Aged 12, they broke up. I stayed with my father in London – an

easy choice as I always felt a failure around my mother and she never said she loved me. I just wanted to grow up quickly and get away, so I no longer felt different, less than and not part of anything: a massive hole in an unhappy life. I was drinking regularly from about 12, and even by my early days in the navy I was told by an officer that my drinking was a concern. I took no notice. In fact, I drank throughout my working life, everything revolved around it. I stank of booze most days. During my marriages I had a number of affairs and sex became a drug as well. I didn’t care who I hurt as long as I felt better, although I remember little as my blackouts were regular. I could turn anything into an addiction, including gambling on fruit machines. Inside, I hated myself and drank more to try dealing with that. I never thought at any time I had a problem. But one day my second wife said if I didn’t sort

out my drinking she was leaving. She gave me the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) number. The man I spoke to visited me and we chatted for six hours. I heard that he used to drink like me, but had been sober for nearly 50 years now! I walked unsteadily into my first AA meeting and don’t remember much of what was said – but was shocked to see happy faces and people who were welcoming and loving. I knew I’d found somewhere safe, where I belonged. Nobody judged, we were equals with the same disease – and so my recovery began that day in 2012. Since then I have never had another drink. Nowadays I actually like the person I see in the mirror. The only requirement to visit an AA meeting is a desire to stop drinking. If you feel you want help, call the confidential helpline, just like I did several years ago. Then you will know that you’re not alone.”

“IF YOU FEEL YOU WANT HELP, CALL THE CONFIDENTIAL HELPLINE... THEN YOU WILL KNOW THAT YOU’RE NOT ALONE.”

AA is located along the entire Costa del Sol and there is a meeting with friendly people who will understand your problems somewhere near you every day. Call the AA helpline for support:

“From being a hopeless drunk and drug addict I’ve become the happiest I’ve ever been” Living today on the Costa del Sol, Leona, aged 45, grew up in a house where drinking excessively was normal. Like many people she followed the family habit – until she nearly died one day that she’ll never forget for the rest of her life…

People who loved me were obviously concerned – yet I carried on abusing myself.

“I worked really hard as an office manager, where drinking was acceptable, part of the job even. I was married to someone who also drank a lot; having children wasn’t a priority. We worked hard and drank hard.

“WORKING THROUGH AA’S 12 STEPS PROGRAMME GAVE ME A FREEDOM NOT ONLY FROM ALCOHOL BUT ALSO FROM DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOUR AND THOUGHTS.”

My grandfather drank and died from it, and my parents drank a lot. We would quite often be staying over at friends’ houses at the weekends so that all the parents could get drunk. When I was older though, my mum stopped drinking after going to Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) meetings. I started drinking aged 13 at the youth club or in the park. I started using cannabis, LSD, ecstasy and speed at about the same time – and a few years later I began using cocaine. By my late 20s I was drinking to blackout every weekend. There were often consequences – fights, breaking bones, putting myself in dangerous situations… When I got married aged 30 my drinking and drug use went to a new level and carried on for 10 years until I was hospitalised with kidney failure.

I didn’t actually drink alcohol for 18 months, but I substituted cocaine for the alcohol until one day it wasn’t

enough. Then one day after violence in my marriage, I hit my rock bottom. At that point I realised I had to do something – that it was me who had the problem and it wasn’t my husband or my job. My parents mentioned I should try AA. At my first meeting in 2016 it was like having a lightbulb switched on. I realised I wasn’t alone any more. Now I have completely changed my life. Working through AA’s 12 Steps programme gave me a freedom not only from alcohol but also from destructive behaviour and thoughts. Now I’m happier and more peaceful than I’ve ever been.”

If Paul or Gemma Carr saw what the future held for them, they wouldn’t have believed anything radically transformational could happen within their own lives, let alone the many lives that have been touched by Collective Calling’s mission to love and help others.

He’d had an encounter with God! Paul’s assurance of the reality of God was sometimes hard to take. His joy, freedom and love for Jesus, piercing against my negativity, stress and depression was causing friction. I reached a point where I was ready to give up on everything, even our marriage. Broken and in tears, after an argument one night, I dropped to my knees, cried out to God and asked Jesus to come into my heart. I had finally reached the end of myself.

Gemma Carr

I came from a large, close knit family. Dad was an atheist, mum a believer in God, so I spent my formative years in Hampstead; North West London, attending Sunday School regularly. In my search for fulfilment and meaning while at University, I embraced the highs offered by marijuana and class A drugs. Every day, for the next twenty years, I smoked marijuana, taking drugs habitually at weekends. I convinced myself that I was happy but there was a gnawing emptiness on the inside, that led me to question the reason for my existence. I met Paul just after his dad died and just before a time of family crisis for me in 2014. Mum had been diagnosed with cancer and given a year to live. A few months after, my dad was diagnosed with cancer as well, but given even less time than mum to live. Dad died within three months, mum six months later in

50

late 2015. As you can imagine, my first year with Paul turned out to be pretty intense. I began visiting Paul after he left for Greece to help the refugees and that then took us both on a journey of healing we never expected. The tragedy suffered by the refugees coupled with our joint experience of loss, deepened our love for each other and in the summer of 2016 we got engaged. Then more tragedy struck, and not too long after we got married in 2017, my nan’s dementia worsened, and my Grandad’s recently diagnosed cancer was also getting worse. With grief and this additional stress, our new marriage came under an excessive amount of strain. When Paul got back from the refugee camps in Turkey, I noticed a visible change in him. Something had shifted on the inside. He’d been struggling with depression but returned with light in his eyes and a totally different persona.

Three days after this, on a boat cruise with friends, I prayed with Paul, asking God to show me a sign that He was real. I’d never seen dolphins before and asked him specifically to show me some! An hour into our cruise, the Captain cut the engine, saying he’d spotted a pod of dolphins! Miraculously the dolphins approached the boat, putting on a stunning display! I was overwhelmed but what really pierced my soul was this rush of unconditional love that swept over me, giving me the biggest high I’ve ever had (and I’ve had more than a few chemical highs!). In that moment, I knew God was real. A dramatic transformation happened inside me. The desires of my heart changed; no longer did I want to get drunk or take drugs! The high I felt that day on the boat was unbeatable. My emptiness was full, my weed habit was broken! I didn’t ask the Lord to break it, He just did! Within a month I had no desire for it anymore. My marriage was slowly restored. I went from someone who would gossip, laugh at others expense, be self-motivated, look internally, thinking the worst of people and situations; to seeing the world through new lenses, having compassion for others, and wanting to live a life of purpose, driven by eternity.

One of the things Gemm a and I had in common was our spiritu al search and desire to know where we came from, how we got here, and what happened to a person after death ? In our pain and heartac he at the beginning of our relatio nship, many weekends were spent on drinking binges, drugs and conse quently arguments and frustra tions taken out on each other. We were drawn back to the Church every week though, by the love emanating from the pe ople. We found peace, solace and co mfort there.

Born in Leicester, UK,. I travelled to Australia and Thailand in my early twenties, embarking on a journey in the search for the real meaning of life. Buddhism and opening Chakras gave me a sense of superficial enlightenment but offered no real transformation on the inside. I spent my twenties partying, smoking marijuana on a daily basis and succumbing to harder drugs at the weekend.

I moved to Spain, working in financial services for 10 years but was deeply dissatisfied with my career. The sudden loss of my dad, just before I met Gemma, caused me a lot of pain, anger and frustration. When the refugee crisis broke out in Europe, news reports dominating the media, caused a deep heart stirring.

I NOTICED A VISIBLE CHANGE IN HIM. SOMETHING HAD SHIFTED ON THE INSIDE. HE’D BEEN STRUGGLING WITH DEPRESSION BUT RETURNED WITH LIGHT IN HIS EYES AND A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERSONA.

THE DISCONTENT I FELT SURROUNDING WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE LIVES OF THE REFUGEES, SENT ME ON A DOWNWARD SPIRAL INTO DEPRESSION. Myself and Gemma hosted a dinner auction, to raise funds for the needs of the refugees. I went over to Greece in January 2016 and immediately got involved in helping with beach rescues and the refugee camps. Gemma was touched by the crisis too. She supported me on missions, coming out to Greece fortnightly. The discontent I felt surrounding what was going on in the lives of the refugees, sent me on a downward spiral into depression. I found work with a Christian Organisation in Greece and for eight months, worked to help the refugees with people from a Church on the Costa Del Sol. Their self-less, sacrificial lifestyle was a witness to us, and I was starting to hear about Jesus in a way I had never heard before. I travelled to Turkey to support refugees there but found myself falling further into depression. In desperation, needing a radical change, one day, I just fell to my knees in surrender, pleading for Jesus to take the depression away. That night I had a dream, I was in tremendous pain with a wooden stake stuck in my leg for what felt like years, at the end, a hand came down and pulled it out and when I woke up I felt completely free of depression. I knew in my heart it was the hand of God.

Fuelled by the Greek Au thorities sending home voluntee rs who were not registered as NGO’ s, at the end of 2016 Gemma wanted to do something worthwhile with the inh eritance from her parent’s death an d so together we decided to set up Collec tive Calling, to continue the work in Greece and extend it to Spain. If you’re thinking that Gemma’s incident with the dolph ins was mere coincidence, I would have agreed with you, if a radical transform ation hadn’t taken place! A definite transformation happened in both ou r hearts, God’s light penetrated our da rkness. When a couple of mo nths after this experience, Gemma lost her grandad, nan, then her cousin Ro bert in his sleep at only 38, all within a short space of time; God saved her fro m spiralling downwards into depre ssion. These deaths one after the oth er, would have crushed her without tha t true revelation of God and what our wonderful pastors Kurt and Melan ie from The Wave Church taught us of the healing power of Jesus. Through our pain and suffer opened us up to see the ing, God hurt, pain and suffering around us. The disparity between the lives live d by the refugees in the camps and the opulence of most people in the We stern world, gave birth to Collective Calling’s ethos – One person on their own cannot change the world but a collective of people sharing love an d helping others can make a real differ ence. Today, Collective Callin g concentrates its efforts in bringing he aling to the underprivileged familie s and the homeless community of Sp they also reintegrate stre ain, and et children in Tanzania back into loving family, through the Centre of Hope.

With God’s help, I stopped bingedrinking and taking drugs soon after, and I was made whole!

COOKING OIL 101

Recently a client told me they only use extra virgin olive oil, no matter what they’re making. I asked them to clarify whether they use extra virgin olive oil for high-heat cooking as well, and they said yes – extra virgin olive oil is the only oil they use.I thought this was very interesting, but more common than you might think. Holistic Nutritionist and Lifestyle Cleanse Expert, Elissa Goodman has a mission to educate and encourage healthy mindful living by helping others embrace the concept that we are a product of what we eat and how we treat ourselves. After losing her husband to cancer plus fighting cancer herself, Elissa is passionate about cleansing your body and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

www.elissagoodman.com info@elissagoodman.com

We often default to the cooking oil used in the home we grew up, or choose one that we’ve been told is the “healthy” option and go with it to make things easy. But, there are so many oils out there, including ones better suited for all different types of cooking. I started asking other clients which oils they use frequently. Some of the main oils they mentioned using as staples are absolutely terrible for health and they had no idea! It was time for me to put a list of oils together in order to highlight some of the positives and negatives of each, with the goal of guiding my readers through the oil decision making process.

THE GOOD EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL (EVOO) EVOO is arguably the most common oil in American households. It is made by pressing olives and extracting their leftover oil. It can have a number of different flavors to it, like buttery, grassy, spicy depending on where the olives are from. EVOO has a smoke point of around 325 degrees Fahrenheit, which is relatively low in the oil world. This is why I was surprised that a lot of my clients only cook with EVOO. A lot of dishes require cooking at temperatures above EVOO’s smoke point, which means that there is a good chance the oil can start overheating – leading to killed nutrients and damaged health. I definitely recommend saving extra virgin olive oil for uses like dressings, vinaigrettes, and finishing drizzles on top of salads. EVOO is packed with antioxidants and polyphenols, which are beneficial plant chemicals, as well as good fat. EVOO is a staple in the Mediterranean diet as well as some of the world’s other healthiest populations. Cold pressed and unfiltered EVOO is ideal since it contains more of the healthful antioxidants and is not damaged from a heating process that is often used to produce other oils.

AVOCADO It is amazing that avocados have so many health benefits and can even be used to make a nutritious oil. The pulp around an avocado’s pit is pressed to make the

52

delicious avocado oil. It is full of healthy fats including oleic acid and essential fatty acids. I love avocado oil because it is a superfood that can be drizzled on top of dishes or added into dressings or used for cooking. Avocado oil has a high smoke point, which means you can cook without worry. Most oils are not so flexible. I recommend swapping out your everyday cooking oil for avocado oil whenever possible.

COCONUT Despite the fact that coconut oil is primarily saturated fat, it is a fantastic choice for cooking oil. It is made up of medium chain triglycerides (MCT), which, counterintuitively, have been known to reduce cholesterol and obesity. Beware that the flavor of coconut oil is pretty strong, so if you are a not a coconut lover, you will want to skip this oil. Coconut oil can tolerate heat up to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is ideal for baking and sautéing on medium to high heat. I love to use coconut oil for baking.

FLAXSEED I absolutely love flaxseed oil because it is high in omega-3 fatty acids and has been shown to have health benefits like reducing blood pressure. Since flaxseed oil has a low smoke point, like EVOO, it is better to use it has a drizzle or as a base for salad dressings. I know a lot of people who even like to apply it as a heavy moisturizer to their skin and hair. Another reason why I like flaxseed oil is the flavor – it has a buttery taste that is not overbearing. It blends well with any herbs or spices.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

THE BAD REGULAR (ALSO KNOWN AS “LIGHT” OR “PURE”) OLIVE OIL Do not be duped by the fact that this is sometimes referred to as “pure” olive oil; light olive oil is not as healthy as extra virgin olive oil. While regular olive oil has the same healthy monounsaturated fats as extra virgin olive oil, it is missing a lot of the positive antioxidants and polyphenols contained in extra virgin olive oil. EVOO is collected during the first pressing of the olives, so a lot of the nutrients are not present during the later pressings when light olive oil is extracted. Some research shows that extra virgin olive oil can help reduce inflammation, but the same is not said for regular olive oil. Light olive oil does have a higher smoke point (475 degrees Fahrenheit) compared to its extra virgin cousin, which means it will not overheat if you do cook with it. Another reason why I do not love regular olive oil is that it is produced using chemicals, which I am never a fan of. I recommend sticking with extra virgin olive oil whenever possible.

CANOLA Canola oil is extracted from the rapeseed plant. This plant contains erucic acid, which has been known to cause heart damage in animal studies. Rapeseed plants have been heavily genetically modified to resist herbicides, so most canola oil is extremely genetically engineered (or GMO). On top of that, research shows that canola oil consumption has been linked to vitamin E deficiency and shortened lifespan in various animal studies. Even worse, canola oil is so heavily processed that it contains

trans fats and those are one of the worst kinds of fats for the human body. They can lead to a slew of health issues including increased LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

“VEGETABLE”

The list of oil options is long and can seem overwhelming. Ultimately, I recommend cutting out as many refined oils as possible (except extra virgin olive oil). For cooking, you can use organic avocado oil, organic coconut oil, or even organic grassfed ghee since they can be cooked at higher heats. Vegetable oils should be avoided as much as possible. Something to note regardless of which oil you are using is that you should always read the ingredients. A product might say it is coconut oil but, upon further investigation, you may find that it is not pure coconut oil and that it actually contains palm oil. It is important to get in the habit of reading the ingredients list for every food item you buy, since companies have a knack of sneaking things in to dupe you. Make sure you are always buying the pure, organic version of whatever oil you are using and, remember, moderation is key.

Many people cook with various vegetable oils regularly, but most do not realize that they are doing their bodies a significant disservice in doing so. The clear, almost tasteless oils are highly processed and refined and come in the form of safflower, corn, soybean and sunflower oil. Canola oil also falls under this category. These vegetables oils are highly inflammatory, which can lead to even more damaging effects. Many of us grew up with our parents using vegetable oils to cook almost everything, but it is time we pass on them and start opting for some of the healthier oil options mentioned here instead.

PALM Palm oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of palm trees. It is best to avoid it because it is unhealthy and damaging to the environment, but it is difficult to do since it is in seemingly everything. In fact, palm oil is included in around 50% of packaged products at grocery stores! Palm oil is high in saturated fat and not particularly high in any nutrients. Palm oil is also one of the main drivers of deforestation, which is a serious problem across the globe. As a result of deforestation, palm oil is also contributing to the destruction of various species – some of which are already on the endangered list like orangutans and pigmy elephants. Do your body, animals, and the planet as a whole a favor by skipping this oil.

Each month, Heidi will offer design advice and spotlight some of her favourite and novelty items.

CL ASSIC BLUE Pantone’s colour for 2020 Here are ways you can include this cold bold in your décor… Various hues of this colour can vibrate in different ways. You can choose a natural stone as a statement backdrop, or a pattern combined with a warm tone, use it in contrast as an accessory, or as a standout light element.

Glass.. yes! Transparency and colour are both a great way to add buzz and illuminate.

Some other finds... A blue pattern fabric against a bronze/copper tone makes a great combination.

I came across this enticing artwork by Miguel Ferrer, who will soon be making a tile collection in Portugal.

Casamance

When it comes to natural stones and materials, I’m like a kid in a candy store… I literally go crazy. Although Lapiz Lazuli would have been the obvious choice in blue, I’ve come across these faded stones with a mix of sky and more intense blues.

Unik Blue Polished Porcelanosa

Tabla Blue Macaubas Porcelanosa

Tabla Azul Boquira

I would love to see this stone in one of my bathroom designs, I find it muted and dramatic at the same time.

Driade

Tabla Blue Roma Pulido Porcelanosa

To create an easy-going style, I can see the Nera chair with a plush wool or sheep skin to cuddle in.

Innovative Neutrals Even though a neutral palette is usually seen as the safe way to go, finding the neutral magic is key for a great outcome. Here are some helpful tips to create a layered and tailored palette that exudes fine elegance and effective contrast. Find the dominating neutral you want to work with‌ and work your way up or down the tonal swatch, choosing a solid, a texture and a pattern in progressive tones. When working with toneon-tone, it’s important to add texture and some pattern to create a layered effect, and by adding an accent tone for contrast you will achieve a muted yet very elegant palette/result.

THE RAW FACTOR

I Love Nicole Linton’s Alpaca collection. Each pillow is a handmade individual piece of art and inspired by ancient techniques, using sophisticated and organic materials.

Nicole Linton On the subject of natural materials, you well know, I have a soft spot for CC Tapis.

I think this makes a fabulous piece to be used as a plush rug or wall décor. Each of their creations is unique and hand embroidered. Intricately spun with natural sheep wool of Patagonia and llama and dyed with native plants.

Somlo

I believe that raw material is so crucial for longevity in design. There is nothing better than a piece that exudes naturality and life. Cotlin brings us their new line of textured and natural rugs, braided in various ways, no rug is the same, and the rugs come in a variety of colours too.

So, what would you do in your next space? Would you go blue or neutral? Or both? Have a love-filled February everyone and now, I’m off to design my next project!

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

PORSCHE 935 & GT2 RS CLUBSPORT 83

TORQUE TALK

I N A P R I L 2 0 1 8 I D ROV E T H E 9 9 1 . 2 G T 2 R S AT P O R T I M A O I N A T W O - C A R TA I L C H A S E W I T H WA LT E R R O H R L , A N D T H E N S T E P P E D I N TO H I S C A R TO E X P E R I E N C E A F E W H OT L A P S W I T H THE MASTER.

Today I am at Portimao again on a similarly sunny but much colder November day with another GT2 RS, the track-only GT2 RS Clubsport, as well as the new 935 that Porsche created as a 70th Anniversary present to itself. Just 77 of these will be made and they were sold out in days, their lucky owners taking delivery at a series of exclusive events that began in July 2019. While these two Porsche supercars are visually as different as chalk and cheese they are really sisters under the skin, the 935 sharing the GT2 RS Clubsport’s metal inner structure and mechanical underpinnings. In technical terms the new 935 takes its styling cues from the 935 race car that dominated Group 5 of the World Championship for Makes in its heyday, consistently winning its class at Le Mans between 1976 and 1981. Latterly this turbocharged 3.0 litre racecar had over 600hp and weighted just 970kg, but the new tribute car I am here to drive today shares its metal inner structure and mechanical underpinnings with the 991.2 GT2 RS Clubsport. That means it has 700hp and 750Nm of torque to push 1,380kg of steel, aluminium and carbon-fibre through the air. In the supercar world there is always a race for more horsepower, sometimes just for sheer bragging rights. But ultimately the real-world speed capability of any car is also a function of its weight, traction and aerodynamics. On that score the 700 hp at 7,000rpm and 750 Nm of torque from 2,500 to 4,500rpm that rockets the 1,470 kg street legal GT2 RS to 100 km/h in 2.7 sec, to 160 km/h in 5.8 sec, to 200 km/h in 8.3 sec, and on to a 340 km/h top speed is all anyone needs in a road car. Thanks to some carbon-fibre body panels, the removal of all carpets, soundproofing, passenger seat, and some other components superfluous to a track machine. Thus, the GT2 RS Clubsport, and the 935 on which it is based distil the basic formula into even more hard-core driving machines with many racing components, such as a three-leg air jack system. Apart from the full roll cage and fire extinguisher system the two cars also share a 115-litre FT3 safety fuel cell with the option of fast fill coupling, and the FIA mandated escape hatch in the roof panel.

84 84

TORQUE TALK

Despite retaining air-conditioning the Clubsport tips the scales at 1,390kg, a full 80kg saving over the road-going GT2 RS, while the 935 is a further 10kg lighter. The structure is stiffened by over 30% by the welded-in steel roll cage, track biased fully adjustable suspension and slick tyres, while the more aggressive aerodynamic packages add significant downforce. Because the Clubsport and 935 are not street legal, and at the same time do not have to conform to a particular set of race regulations Porsche can turn up the dial on these cars to 11.

Another safety device is the detachable Safecraft net system that anchors to the roll cage and dashboard on either side of the seat to prevent your arms flailing about in a big crash. In short, the driver is well strapped in by the six-point hardness and cocooned by the steel roll cage and various other safety devices. You’d have to be very unlucky indeed to be badly injured in a current racecar.

Comparing the adjustable suspension, big brakes and many other components on these cars to the equivalent parts on the 911 RSR race car in the neighbouring pit lane box underlines the fact that as track ready as the Clubsport and 935 are they are still a far cry from a fullblown race car. But for the serious track day enthusiast who wants a near factory racecar experience, this is as good as it gets. Compared to the steel/aluminium door of a normal GT2 RS the carbon-fibre doors on the Clubsport and 935 seem to weigh almost nothing. Getting in over the stout side impact bar is much easier if you remove the steering wheel, but also being lithe and flexible helps. While the Hans Device protects your head from being flung forwards in a head-on accident the current Recaro race seat has the extended ‘wings’ that prevent your head from snapping sideways. These wings restrict your peripheral vision to some extent, but on track where everyone is going in one direction that is of minimal concern.

The Cosworth ICD instrument pack with integrated data logger is placed dead ahead of the driver, this digital information hub flanked by the Sport Chrono clock and boost gauges from the road car. The panel on the centre console houses switches that control the ignition cut-off and buttons for ABS, Traction Control and Wet mode. In fact, the only familiar elements from the road car that stand out are the ignition key to the left of the steering wheel and the PDK lever whose stylised alloy form stands out like a sore thumb in this pure competition car environment.

TORQUE TALK

Flick the battery cutout switch to ‘On’, turn the key in the ignition and the 935’s 3,800cc twin-turbocharged flatsix motor fires up just as like on the GT2 RS. But thanks to the stripped out cabin the sound of air and fuel exploding into violent life is that much louder. That said, the muffling effect of the race helmet means your eardrums are not taxed that much. Pulling the gearshift lever to the D position followed by tugging the righthand paddle shifter selects first. Warming up the tyres is a must with any car let alone one with 700hp and 750Nm of turbocharged twist ready to wrench rubber from tarmac in an instant. Both these cars wear massive race rubber compared to the normal GT2 RS, which sits on centre lock BBS forged wheels in 9.5J x 20-inch in front and 12.5J x 21inch at the rear, with 265/35ZR20 and 325/30ZR21 Michelin Cup 2 tyres. The GT2 RS Clubsport fills out its arches with 10.5J x 18-inch ET28 and 12.5J x 18-inch one-piece forged wheels shod

with 27/65-R18 and 31/71-R18 Michelin race slicks. The wider bespoke carbonfibre bodywork of the 935 can take even larger footwear, in this case single-piece forged wheels in 11.5J x 18-inch ET15.3 in front and 13.0J x 18-inch ET-10 at the rear wrapped in 29/65-R18 and 31/71-R18 Michelins. This gives the 935 a wider front track and rubber footprint so its turn-in under braking is slightly better.

Yet maybe the comparison is invalid since the smaller diameter race steering wheel makes the steering feel faster, and the lack of ‘squidgy’ street

legal tread movement compared to the slick tyres conspire to send different messages to my gloved fingertips. The PCCB ceramic discs of the road car give way to Brembo steel brakes on the 935 and Clubsport, their front-to-rear bias adjustable via a brake balance bar. These competition brakes consist of 380mm vented and slotted steel discs clamped by six-pot racing callipers in front, with 355mm vented and slotted steel discs clamped by four-pot race callipers at the rear. Their hard race pads require some heat to work properly and need to be warmed up in tandem with the tyres. I spent the first lap doing just that while familiarising myself with the feel of the car. The mechanics set the traction control and brakes in their middle positions, a decent hedge against the feral power of the twin-turbo motor waiting to be unleashed.

Even using just two-thirds throttle exiting the tighter corners shows up the wisdom of the warm up strategy. Exiting Turn 3, a tight near 180-degree right hander the cold rubber relinquishes its grip in a smidgen of power oversteer. This is followed by the nose running slightly wide as I crest the brow at the top of the opening left hander onto the back straight. The loose tail in Turn 3 is expected, and the understeer I encounter in Turn 4 is symptomatic of cold tyres, rearward weight transfer, push from the locking differential, and the fact that until the rubber is hot and sticky my speed out of this uphill bend is insufficient for the front aero aids to create much downforce. Even with the stiffer shell, race suspension and slick tyres the ability of the engine’s sheer torque to move the tail around is always lurking in the background ready to pounce. But since turbo lag is minimal you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by being patient with the throttle

as you exit a bend. The upside, as I found with the GT2 RS here in 2018, is that the characteristic velocity of the chassis setup is very linear so when the tail does let go it is neither sudden death nor difficult to retrieve.

T H E S O U N D T R AC K I S A N OT H E R PA R T O F T H E CHARM OFFENSIVE OF T H I S PA I R When you open the throttle fully on the straight bits, the flat-six motor delivers the authentic turbocharged Le Mans Porsche race car aural experience in full measure. Once the brakes have heat in them they produce phenomenal stopping power allied to excellent pedal feel, shaving off big speeds with confidence inspiring consistency. That pedal sensitivity and the chassis’ balance under trail braking into bends makes it feel natural to lean on the front end, putting the grip of

the wide slicks, track biased coil-over suspension, and aerodynamic aids to maximum effect. Thanks to this wind tunnel honed aero package the enhanced downforce means that the 280km/h terminal speed at the end of the pit straight in either car feels like a walk in the park in stability terms. Not that there was the any issue with the stock GT2 RS here anyway as I recall. With heat in their tyres and brakes the 935 and Clubsport begin to show their true character when extended. In reality they are only a shade faster than the street GT2 RS in a straight line, but what is clear is their superiority in the bends. The one proviso is that they require a particular technique to drive quickly, which in turn delivers a particular reward. This is derived from a mental attitude as well as pure driver skill, and as with all 911-based designs these cars respond best to a tidy and committed approach.

THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORT IS ZERO-CARBON When you think of ‘the future of transport’ you probably imagine flying cars, self-driving ones or Knight Rider (if you’re old enough). But the vision that’s been sold to us via Hollywood and the car industry is not sustainable. It’s high energy, individualised and profit-driven. And it would mean a future much like the past – full of traffic jams. by Andrew Tobert

Outside the IAA conference in Frankfurt, activists from Greenpeace Germany show just how much climatedamaging CO2 is emitted by some types of SUVs. © Greenpeace

On September 14th, 25,000 demonstrators — 18,000 of whom were cyclists — interrupted the first open day of the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA), leading to one of the largest mass mobilisations around the motor show in its 120+ year history. Activists came to Frankfurt to demand that the car industry stop driving climate change and illustrate what a climate-friendly future of transport looks like.

OURS IS A DIFFERENT FUTURE. ONE THAT’S FAR MORE EXCITING (AND LIBERATING) THAN ANYTHING WE’VE SEEN FROM THE CAR INDUSTRY THUS FAR.

100

MORE WALKING Walking has been with us since humans first learned to…you get the idea. And still, there are few better ways to get around. Cities are finally waking up to walking. Car-free zones and pedestrianised areas have transformed shopping districts and town centres from New York to York. London is planning to become the ‘world’s most walkable city’ by improving signage and reconfiguring pedestrian crossings to give people shorter waits and longer crossing times when they cross the road. Walking isn’t for everyone all the time. But by making walking more attractive and easier, cities can cut congestion, improve air quality and encourage more activity in people’s lives. So many trips we take are under 2 miles (3.2kms). 42% of people agreed that they could just as easily walk these as drive them. There’s so much potential for walking!

101

MORE CYCLING

Cycling is great for cities and the people who live there. Bikes are the original ‘zero-emission vehicle’ so more people cycling helps cities respond to the twin crises of air pollution and climate breakdown. Cities are dramatically increasing the number of people who cycle by safely separating them from other road traffic. In Copenhagen, 62% of people now cycle to their place of work or study. That’s up 12% since 2015!

MORE E-MOBILITY

Across the world, companies like Lime, Bird or Jump by Uber are rolling out thousands of electric scooters and bicycles that are paid per ride via a mobile app. These services are potentially great news for cities as they make it easier for people to access public transport. There are caveats though. These systems need to be built to last, with easy, low-energy mechanisms to keep batteries charged up. And above all, they need to operate in the public interest – integrating into public transport systems without littering the streets or endangering the public.

102

MORE RENEWABLY-POWERED PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Trains, buses, ferries, trams – these are the backbones of urban transport. A bus can carry far more people than a car, which means it can move far more people through a city. In terms of space and energy, public transport is the most efficient way to move millions of people. And it’s a form of a social safety net as it liberates people on lower incomes from the cost of owning and maintaining a car. Cities like Moscow and Beijing have public transport networks that are so good they are famous for it. And other cities are catching up. Auckland in New Zealand recently revamped its bus network with faster, easier connections and is now on track to double its bus passenger numbers within a decade. Something no other city has done!

FEWER CARS

Activists protest against climate-damaging cars with a 1,400 cubic meter balloon representing the 10 tons of climatedamaging CO2 emitted by some types of SUVs presented at the IAA by BMW and Mercedes. Fewer cars will benefit general human well-being and air quality massively. And it will also free up space. Loads of it. Parking takes up 200 square miles (517km²) of Los Angeles. That’s enough to fit in a city the size of Singapore. Imagine what we could do without car parks; we could build more green space, more shops, more restaurants. The choices are endless. But cars will not disappear. We will need them for some journeys – particularly those of us with additional needs. For these, will need car clubs; cars that we rent per minute, and share with everyone. These cars will be electric, and small, to make sure they sip energy rather than guzzle it. And they can be self-driven if you want, sure. Around the world, cities are pioneering new approaches to encourage us to travel less. When Paris closed a motorway, half the traffic just disappeared. This phenomenon has been repeated around the world. When presented with an opportunity, we’re actually quite happy to adjust our lives. Re-configuring our cities away from car-use benefits everyone. And in the face of a climate emergency, we can’t delay. We need to give people options to move away from cars. And we need to stop car manufacturers producing the petrol and diesel engines that are cooking the climate and polluting our cities. Clean, reliable and shared. That’s the future of transport. Let’s make it happen.

Andrew Tobert is the engagement lead for the Clean Air Now campaign

THE NET

If there’s one thing we’re good at as a species, it’s buying stuff. Often we don’t even really need the stuff we buy but someone or something told us to and well, that made us want to. It’s psychology or biology or human nature or whatever... IT’S ADVERTISING

BY IAN GREENLAND

The discovery of a copper printing plate dated back to China’s Song dynasty (960–1279) is considered to be the world’s earliest identified printed advertising medium. A relatively fruitless google of its touted service “Jinan Liu’s Fine Needle Shop” suggests they didn’t weather the shifting economic tides of the next thousand years, although it’s always possible they willingly turned their backs on the high stakes world of pin commerce and pivoted into ball bearings or string or something. As far back as Ancient Egypt, ordinary folk were being advertised to via scrawled sales messages and papyrus posters on busy streets. As archaeological finds in Pompeii attest, commercial messages and political campaign ads were commonplace even before Mount Vesuvius threw a wobbler in AD 79.

A whole millennium later in the Middle Ages, the majority of England’s toothless, mud-caked divs still hadn’t learned to read, but were nevertheless bombarded with pictorial ads for goods and services – an illustrated horseshoe for a blacksmith, a hat for a milliner, bag of flour for a baker or a gleaming boot for a swift kick up the arse from a nobleman (just two groats!) Despite the relative lack of cultural progress from Pompeii’s heyday, illiteracy was seemingly less of a barrier to burgeoning consumerism than molten lava. Fast forward a few centuries more and you’d have to be living under several tons of volcanic ash not to have noticed advertising is EVERYWHERE (Just leaf through this magazine.... In all seriousness though, that’s an amazing restaurant / bar / boutique / cosmetic clinic – you should definitely eat there / drink there / shop there / get your rampant back hair lazered there...) Alongside the more conventional magazine ads, newspaper spreads, towering billboards, doormat-littering junk mail, TV show interruptions and

104

perennially fucking godawful radio jingles, the rise of e-commerce, search engines and social media have opened the floodgates to far more subversive and psychologically astute means to help us part with our cash.

ENTIRE INDUSTRIES REVOLVE AROUND FACILITATING ONLINE MARKETING IN THE MOST TARGETED BUT INVISIBLE WAY POSSIBLE. Once a brave new frontier of advertising, mere popups now represent a crude and obtrusive annoyance – the online casino ads which interrupt your attempts to illegally stream Frozen 2, the pictures of naked “girls in your area” which appear over videos you’re trying to watch of naked girls definitely not in your area. We leave digital footprints all over the shop as we traipse around the net scratching whichever itch is most pressing, from the topics we google, the styles we browse, the tags we hash, the likes we like and the friends we keep and all it takes is some ridiculously complex algorithmic AI to interpret those footprints, decipher your kettle’s probably past its best and “Hey Presto”, the next time you hit Facebook, there’s an Amazon ad for a retro copper De’Longhi nestled in between your mum’s embarrassing post about “sexy” Nigel Farage, and a pic of the finger your mate dislocated playing volleyball.... You really need to have a word with mum you know.... do it over a nice cup of tea. You can break in your new kettle. Facebook, home to over 2 billion daily users holds vast amounts of personal data on us, from age to gender, sexual orientation, pastimes, career trajectory, political preferences, geographic location, shopping trends, viewing habits.... The list goes on, and whilst it’s a list businesses are currently not allowed to purchase (not least because maintaining ownership of this data

YOU SOOOOO NEED ONE OF THESE

makes it all the more valuable for Zuckerberg and co), that doesn’t mean said businesses can’t throw their advertising darts and pay Facebook to move the target into place for them. Whilst awareness of or engagement with these ads may vary from person to person, our social media feeds are littered with targeted marketing we’ve tacitly invited in with the online choices we make, the company we keep and the data we share.

WHILST TARGETED ADS MIGHT GET YOU IN THE DOOR OF THE SHOP, DRAGGING YOU OVER TO THE TILL TAKES EVEN MORE TECH SAVVY. In 2018, 75% of e-commerce orders were abandoned before a purchase was finalized, with blame placed on the checkout process, payment options, hidden costs, registration hurdles, security concerns or simply diversity of choice and consumer trepidation. Billions of dollars are invested annually to make sure you don’t walk away with your cash next time you fancy a browse. Taiwan-based Appier’s key venture recently doubled its funding to $160 million. Its AI platform tracks customers’ activities as they peruse online, analysing countless data points to anticipate and re-inform consumer behaviours. Even the position of your cursor as you shop, the way you tap or swipe a screen or your scrolling patterns feed machine-learning which determines purchasing intent and customises the shopping experience

accordingly. Ad placement, frequency, wording, colours. Everything is adaptable with intent. The perceived upside for us plebs is a smoother, more bespoke online shopping experience.... Of course we don’t always notice we went online with no intention to shop. Since we pretty much accept the bombardment of ads as a fact of life, it’s nice to pretend they’re actually appearing for our convenience and not someone else’s bottom line. You tearfully change your relationship status to single after five years and it’s likely no mere coincidence a “half price spa day” offer drops onto your feed that same day. The smiling, empoweredlooking lady with the great hair in the ad doesn’t need a good-for-nothing bloke cos she’s getting pampered. You deserve pampering.... ( LOVING the ad font colour by the way! Blue’s your favourite isn’t it. It’s like they knew somehow...) Paypal! Yesss!! - saves typing out the long number on the front of the credit card you’ve recently maxed out.....Anyway who cares if you’re basically being manipulated into buying a sauna and a massage, it’s half price for fuck’s sake.... what’s that, book the half price spa day and get 10% off an annual membership package?..... ooooooh..... Marketers refer to the sophisticated, AI augmented systems in place to shuffle us towards the checkout as “sales funnelling”. Moulded from our data and our online behaviour, that’s what we are: funnel fodder. Stupid, predictable icing, funnelled onto some very happy exec’s cake. Profit cake....... CAAAAAKE.... You’ve stopped reading this and you’ve gone to buy some cake haven’t you? SNAP!!! I just funnelled you mofo!

PACK IT UP, PACK IT IN… Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.

Let me begin this piece by telling you that one of the greatest lessons my family and I learned about travelling was the notion that “need” is a VERY strong word. Not only by visibly recognising how little so many people in this world have, and how our culture is vastly over the top when it comes to necessary personal possessions, but also that when you are travelling you don’t need anywhere near as much as you think you do - even if you’re a light packer. There are also cultural So this is my guru guide to packing for a trip if you’re heading to South East Asia (as we did) or anywhere that is generally warm, hot or humid, and what you actually really do NEED.

A T OWE L AND A F L A N N E L

These double up as many things while on the road - a flannel can turn into a cleaning cloth, handkerchief, brow-mopper, etc. And your towel, while having its obvious purpose, may also serve as an extra blanket, sheet, shade, a scarf or something to sit on when you come across an uncomfortable surface. A towel can be replaced by a sarong, though not being the most comfortable to dry with post-shower, it is far more versatile than an actual towel, takes up far less space and dries much quicker.

U ND E RWEAR

Yes I would say that this is a necessity but you need only three pairs. I am not going to suggest wearing them inside out to accommodate an extra day’s wear, hygiene standards do not need to drop just because you’re on the move, and we are not screfty new-age wannabees. We are clean humans experiencing the world. So, back to

underwear; three pairs is plenty. One to wear, one to wash and one for spare. Wherever you are there is generally going to be running water and you’ll probably be carrying some form of soap. When you wash yourself; wash thy undies. They’ll probably be dry for the next morning, but if not, you’ve got your spares. If you’re a lady, like me (!), two bras is enough. One sports-ish, one all-rounder. Done.

S H O R T S Two pairs. Simple. L O N G PA N T S One pair of dark coloured jeans

or thicker material, and one pair of leggings or joggers. The jeans or trousers serve as your warm clothes or more formal attire should you happen to need it, and the leggings or joggers work for sports, comfy pants and warmer bed clothes if needed.

EVENING WEAR

One outfit for wearing to a place that may require you not to look like a traveller. For this my sarong served as a scarf, if you’re clever you can make an elegant outfit from what you have.

GOOD SHOES

depending on where you’re travelling to this obviously varies but if you’re going to be experiencing different types of terrain a decent pair of trainers will do. Hikers may prefer specialised footwear but these are bulky and heavy when not in use so if not essential go with the trainers. And of course one pair of sandals; flip flops are the worst for your posture and comfort, Birkenstocks are great and also versatile but not great for getting wet, opt for something that you like the look of and are waterproof. Then, if you think it’ll be a possibility, you can slip in a pair of slightly more elegant shoes for that odd occasion where neither of those are suitable. But make sure they’re light and don’t take up much space.

106

T O PS You’ll need three

T-shirts, go for darker colours so that you can wear them more than once each time but opt for three different colours so you have some variation and don’t get completely sick of the sight of all your stuff. One cotton button up long sleeved shirt, this you can’t live without. You may go to places of worship which require you cover up (ladies) your shoulders and legs, but you may also need to keep cool.

SOCKS two pairs for

your trainer wearing moments and one thick comfy pair for sleeping, travelling, airplane, train ride and cosy moments.

having to carry it around with the daily essentials so bring along a smaller bag.

MOSQ U IT O R E P E L L A N T

This is a must, we chose to opt for DEET-free repellant as using strong chemicals daily for long periods of time o us or the kids didn’t appeal to me. You can get all-natural versions which are effective against malaria and other mosquito contractible diseases. Take enough to cover your entire trip.

DEVICES laptops or devices,

require a charger for each, but you can minimise this to one plug and USB cables for each gadget. You can get a one universal one-fits-all adaptor plug to suit your destinations.

HEAD P HONE S

Get small ones but good ones!

EAR PLUGS

SW EATER

One comfy, versatile, warm, goes-witheverything jumper/sweater/ fleece…whatever your preference - but just one.

JAC KET

Depending on the climate you’re visiting this will vary but for all types of travel, there’s the potential of rain. A good quality rain jacket, splash jacket, waterproof windproof type overcoat will serve you well and they fold down to almost nothing. This also helps if you find yourself in a colder place, a chilly evening or an overcast day and you need to layer up; t-shirt (or two), cotton shirt, jumper, lightweight raincoat, sarong as scarf, and overcoat = warm!

A definite must if you’re going to be venturing outside the world of comfortable hotels, or perhaps taking overnight trains - get professional swimmer’s ones for comfort and full noise block, and an eye mask (you’ll probably get one on the plane but find a comfortable one that really fits you to take with you).

C O S M E T I C S This is too

personal to advise on, some people can live without it, some cannot so - each to their own but keep it to a minimum and make sure it doesn’t weigh more than your clothes! Take less, take miniature - just make sure you have some shampoo as this can double up as soap.

SUN CREAM

Opt for a 100% natural, high protection from UVA and UVB cream and take plenty for the duration of your trip.

Other ways to save space are taking a Kindle as opposed to books, take the bag you’ll use for a day pack as your hand luggage, try to limit devices to one plus your phone. One other great thing to keep on you is a waterproof bag or plastic bag for any wet things that you might need to carry with you at any time. All this should be able to fit in a hand luggage sized suitcase or bag, you’d be surprised how little you’ll need and how much you can do with so little! I’d also advise to take a slightly bigger bag than needed so that you can purchase souvenirs along the way.

HAT

One cap/hat for sun protection.

F IR S T A ID KIT

Obviously a prerequisite but you only need the real basics; you can get first aid everywhere you go these days but if you’re off to the jungle; pack carefully!

DAY BAG You won’t want to

Lighten the load and enjoy your trip!

be unpacking your suitcase or backpack and then

WHETHER YOU ARE A WINE CONNOISSEUR, A GASTRONOMER OR CHOCOLATE LOVER, PUT D-WINE AT THE TOP OF YOUR LIST.

Considered one of the finest wine collections on the coast and boasting the largest collection of Spanish wines in the world, it’s safe to say D-Wine is on top of its wine game, but what you might be intrigued to hear is that their gastronomic game is also in a league of its own.

The extensive a la carte menu uses locally sourced produce straight from the market and throughout the year specialities are offered dependent on seasonality. The chef prides himself on the meat and fish section boasting freshlycaught sea bass, turbot, King Crab, Black Cod, Almadraba tuna and Gillardeau oysters. Their wild fish selection is selected daily and can be cooked whole on the grill, in the oven or baked in salt. Comprising of multiple areas, we dined on the terrace, adjacent to the lounge area which is equipped with sofas and tables and also plays host to the wine-tasting sessions

The Fresh Artichoke Salad with rocket, cherry tomatoes, Sicilian olives and parmesan was the perfect accompaniment to the fragrant meat and fish options. The dishes are designed to pair excellently with wines from Spain and beyond. The sommelier recommended to us to try the Pago de Carraovejas 2011; a winning combination.

FLUFFY ONE-PAN APPLE PANCAKE I make this every week and everyone loves it. It makes a great batch cook, and the batter keeps fresh in the fridge for several days so you can make pancakes on demand. It uses what I call a flax ‘egg’: 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal and 2 tablespoons water. You can buy flaxseed meal or blitz flaxseeds in a blender.

Makes 1 large pancake, enough for 2 portions 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal 2 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons peanut butter 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 pinch of baking soda 1 pinch of salt 1 teaspoon vanilla paste 250 ml (8½ fl oz/1 cup) Oat Milk 100 g (3½ oz/scant 1 cup) oat flour 100 g (3½ oz/1 cup) buckwheat flour 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1–2 large eating (dessert) apples (peeled, cored and sliced into wedges) jam or plant yoghurt, to serve Boosters nut butter chopped nuts

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flaxseed meal and water and let it set for 1–2 minutes. Add the peanut butter, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, salt and vanilla paste and whisk everything together well. Add the plant milk and whisk again until well combined. Next, add the oat and buckwheat flours, stir until combined, then let the batter rest for 5 minutes. Alternatively, the batter can be prepped for the

next day; sometimes the pancakes become even tastier if they have rested in the fridge. To cook the pancakes, preheat a small frying pan (skillet) so it is hot but not so screaming hot that the oil smokes when it makes contact with the surface of the pan. Add a little coconut oil to the pan, then gently lay the apple slices in the pan and fry for 5 minutes until lightly browned on each side.

Arrange the apples beautifully in the pan. Give the batter a stir, then pour in the pancake batter and cook for about 5 minutes until the surface bubbles, then flip the pancake over with a large slice and fry on the other side until cooked through. Serve with a dollop of jam or plant yoghurt.

TOLL-FREE ROADS ARE SPREADING TO ANDALUCÍA

HAPPY RECYCLING! Ever wondered what happens to all that packaging and wrapping paper left over from December and January’s fiestas? Until now, much of it was going to waste, but a new promotion known as Happy Recycle (Feliz Reciclar) has been put into place by the Commonwealth of the Costa del Sol Occidental and Ecoembes, to raise awareness of the need to recycle and reuse. Although this promotion took place at the busiest time of year, the initiative is aiming to continually educate people about the benefits of recycling, to cut back on annual waste.   Specific waste containers were provided at the event for cardboard and paper, plastic, glass and in some places, food and garden waste. Even clothes and shoes that are no longer needed can be disposed of in a way which will see them recycled and the growing number of local charity shops are always grateful for goods such as books, bric a brac, cds, clothes and accessories. Before you throw it into the general bin, consider recycling.

118

The event proved just how good ladies’ football can be with a tense match which saw CD Estepona beating CD Lauro, Candor CF and CD Mijas. The initiative was a great boost of support for both the charity and the children.

Campaigns to end the toll charges on the AP-7 stretch starting from the Valencian town, Silla, and finishing in San Juan (Alicante) have been ongoing for nearly 20 years, and it has now become free of charge for the first time since the 1970s. Another stretch closer to Marbella to become toll free at the same time, is the 121 kilometers of the AP-4 which links the Andalucian

provinces of Sevilla and Cádiz. The new ‘free-of-charge’ status for the AP-7 and AP-4 follow just a year after the tolls were scrapped on the AP-1 and it’s not clear whether they will be the last to remove the fees. This comes as terrific news for locals and businesses in both areas as it will reduce the traffic through smaller towns and significantly lower travel costs for many.

GOING FOR GOLD Centro Plaza’s fifth annual Charity sports day took place in favour of the Marbella Red Cross and gave sport lovers of all ages a packed day of activities. The initiative was created five years ago in response to the political policy held by Centro Plaza with regards to Social and Corporate Responsibility, and has become a popular event, with this year seeing over 300 participants in eight different categories.   Participants took to the outdoor parking area of Centro Plaza Commercial Centre in Nueva Andalucía to compete in the sports contests, with gold, silver and bronze medals for the winners. Top prize for overall winners was as a weekend for two in the Hotel PYR in Puerto Banus, complete with two nights’ bed and breakfast, plus free parking. A raffle also took place with various prizes that were donated by various collaborators of the event.   All money raised from the event has been designated to the Marbella Red Cross, specifically for the emergency and first aid department.

LOVE LONGER AT LA SALA

ON THE RIGHT PATH Marbella town hall has announced a five-year conservation plan to give its coastal promenades a much-needed facelift and extension, with an investment of €21.6 million. The new coastal path is set to connect much of the Costa del Sol and works will continue to link the west side of Marbella, from Estepona and San Pedro. East side of Marbella, the coastal path is being extended by more than 9,000sqm via

pedestrian walkways from the famous Marbella arch to Playa de Los Monteros. Necessary upgrades and repairs will be carried out between Casa Blanca and Playa Nagueles, between the La Herradura building and Avenida Lola Flores in Puerto Banus and between El Cable beach and El Pinillo. Urbanisations and beach access areas are also set to be improved.

La Sala in Puerto Banus are feeling the love this year and celebrating Valentine’s weekend with two spectacular events. Friday 14th February is the intimate Live Lounge with ‘A Crazy Little Show Called Love…’ brought to you by Sala residents Wall Street Band. The second event on Saturday 15th February will see the two of the coast’s top tributes, Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble as they perform their show ‘Come Fly With Us!’.   Both evenings will include a luxury three course dinner menu, welcome glass of Cava and a fabulous performance. The menu boasts a delicious selection of dishes including tempura scallops, fresh fillet of sole and braised lamb shank, along with some tasty vegetarian and vegan options. The A La Carte menu will also be offered in the Main Restaurant with live music brought to you both evenings by the fabulous Masquerade Duo.   Reserve your place by contacting La Sala Puerto Banus on +34 952 814 145, reservations@LaSalaBanus.com.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
