Spring 2015

S

pring is most definitely our favourite time of year. The sun shines brighter, the paseos that stretch along the coastline of Southern Spain bustle with people and, most importantly, brides spring into action to plan their wedding for the year ahead. Whatever stage you’re at in terms of wedding prep, CONFETI can solve all your wedding worries. It’s all about the glamour of the gowns in this season’s issue. From one of the most recognised bridal fashion houses, Maggie Sottero to the lesser known bohemian bridal designs of Christos Costarellos, we can help you find your dream dress. Once you’ve found your perfect gown, why settle for wearing it only once? Turn to page 46 for a totally unique way to don your dress for a second time, capturing it on camera in a Trash the Dress shoot. CONFETI organised our own last month which was shot underwater with MAC Model Elsa and will hopefully show you how a Trash the Dress shoot is definitely worth serious consideration. Fashion aside, this issue also offers some bridal beauty secrets and we give you a special glimpse into the makeup case of none other than multi Emmy award winning make up artist Kevin James Bennett. Once the chaos and madness of the big day is over, why not escape to a romantic honeymoon hideout with your new hubby? This issue, we take you on a breath-taking whistle-stop tour of South East Asia, stopping by Thailand and Vietnam. With the region’s pristine beaches, enticing getaway cabins and lantern lit restaurants, you’ll want to remain lost in paradise forever more. If you need yet more bridal advice and inspiration, we are delighted to be organising the very first CONFETI Wedding Show. This two-day

Make a Statement

I’m still completely in love with statement necklaces. They work particularly well with the more understated wedding dress that is simple in design but needs a hint of glamour to bring it to life for your special day. Accessorize has a fabulous range of necklaces, but this Venetian Jewel version features pale grey stones, which would ensure your wedding look is not too uniform and will add an interesting dimension to your overall appearance. I’m not normally a huge fan of a clutch bag mainly because I struggle to fit all my ‘musthave’ items for a night out in one! However, on your wedding day, none of that matters. All you need with you is the bare necessities and I couldn’t imagine a more exquisite clutch for your special day than this Aruna Seth butterfly box. This is a particular favourite; I love the classy combination of the grey satin with the gold Swarovski elements. This line of Butterfly Box Clutches from Aruna Seth is made in Italy and each comes with a detachable for added versatility. Arunaseth.com

Kick up a Storm

Sky is the Limit

There really is nothing stopping you from designing and organising the wedding reception of your dreams. The choice of fabrics, colours and styles out there is quite simply overwhelming. Why not incorporate an exotic/paradise theme into your wedding venue with this bright pink flamingo? It will bring an essence of faraway lands into your wedding celebration, which you could enhance with rum cocktails and outlandish canapés, such as duck liver mousse with guava fruit. Houseoffraser.co.uk

Make sure your feet are looking mighty fine with these nude strappy heels. They are the perfect shade of beige, which will work well with any skin tone and won’t clash with the delicate colour of your dress. These shoes will also carry you through into the evening; the tiny diamante detailing adds a hint of shimmer so you can shine on the dance floor. Lipsy.co.uk

Beauty Sleep

There is nothing worse than dark circles under the eyes so it will never be more important to get a full eight hours sleep than on the night before your big day. This luxurious velvet eye mask from surf brand White Surf will do the job! I love the fabric print, which will ensure you can stay stylish even while sleeping. Whitestuff.com

Pamper & Protect

Stay glowing and hydrated when you jet off on your honeymoon with essentials like these Crabtree & Evelyn Products. This Gardner’s Moisturising Lip Balm is a vital tool to protect your lips from the elements. Its multibutter formula gives it a luxuriously rich texture, while an SPF15 ingredient protects from the sun. The Citron, Honey & Coriander Hand Therapy has a light feel but still contains those all-important Ceramides 3 and 6 to improve the skin’s barrier function to reduce moisture loss. It also includes botanical extracts of lemon, coriander and honey, known to soothe dry, irritated skin, and myrrh, which has been shown to help condition nails and cuticles. Crabtree-evelyn.com

The Sweetest Love I love these tasty Champagne Truffle Heart Selectors from the decadent Hotel Chocolat. They taste divine and look so pretty. Enjoy them with girlfriends the night before the big day with a cool glass of bubbly or hand them out as elegant wedding favours. Hotelchocolat.com

Pretty as a Pearl

This Pure Luxe MultiHighlighter in Pearl from the Autograph range at Marks & Spencer contains a dusting of pale gold, which will give you a post holiday glow on your wedding day, even before you have jetted off on honeymoon. Subtle but still enough colour to make you look beautiful. Marksandspencer.com

A Golden Glow

Guilt Free Glamour

To me, these Floral Sheer Wide Leg Trousers are a honeymoon essential. Perfect for those cool evenings once the heat of the sun has dissipated or over a pair of bikini bottoms for a stroll along the beach, these are simply divine. The floral print is gorgeously feminine and the delicate fabric comfortable and stylish at the same time. I want! Missselfridge.com

OF THE

T

he CONFETI team knows only too well how planning a wedding can take over your life. From choosing exactly the right invitations to send to your friends and relatives to booking the perfect live act for your reception, the process of putting your big day together can take a year or more. If you are thinking of a themed ceremony then you can probably add still more time to that estimate. We are always looking for ways to help our readers, so on October the 3rd and 4th we will be holding the very first Confeti Wedding Show at the super luxurious

Sunborn Hotel, Gibraltar’s first five-star yacht hotel. Bringing together a wide range of wedding experts, this is the perfect opportunity to find out exactly what these service providers, most of which have impressive records of helping to organise weddings in Gibraltar and the Costa del Sol, can do for you. A variety of wedding specialists will be showcasing their services at this event, which makes it the perfect place for brides-to-be to research the huge range of possibilities on offer. The vendors at the fair will represent every

aspect of the bridal industry, so whether you want to find your dream dress designer, venue, wedding planner, florist, photographer or cake you can be sure that there will be something to appeal to your unique vision of what shape your day should take. We are especially pleased that Confeti’s first Wedding Show will be taking place on board the Sunborn and will be sponsored by the Sala Group. The Sunborn itself is an excellent wedding venue and its highly professional staff members alongside the Sala team have amassed plenty of experience at hosting similar events.

Apart from the many stands that will display the mind-boggling array of services on offer to brides and grooms thinking of tying the knot on the Coast, many special events will be taking place throughout the course of the two days including a spectacular bridal catwalk show and make up masterclasses. Visitors will also be given a goodie bag to remind them of what our exhibitors can do to make their wedding a day to remember and – don’t forget – the Sunborn Hotel is a great place to relax over a cocktail or a meal. When your feet are tired you will find plenty of places to explore on Gibraltar’s luxury floating hotel. There will never be such a great opportunity to speak to all of these wedding experts under one roof, so make sure that you clear some space in your diary for this exciting event. Best of British Talent to showcase at

White Gallery LONDON 2015

White Gallery London is the No.1 destination for discovering the very best of British bridal talent. As they prepare for the sixth edition of the premium bridal trade show, the nation’s finest designers have revealed their key trends to look out for at White Gallery London 2015.

Louise Bentley Making a debut at White Gallery London 2015 is Louise Bentley, the new and exciting collection of British designed wedding dresses from talented duo Christine Wilke and Jane Hancock, the award winning design partnership behind the well-established and successful Loulou label. Beautiful, well-cut elegant wedding dresses, using pure silks and corded laces are the essence of this gorgeous new collection launched for 2015.

Ian Stuart

Acclaimed designer Ian Stuart returns to White Gallery London with yet another show- stopping collection of bridal gowns. The honour of having his ‘Flowerbomb’ dress included in the V&A Wedding Dress Exhibition inspired Ian to create a collection that would be fit for a museum. The gowns showcased were almost all exclusively created for royalty, socialites, fashionistas and celebrities, who had access to the finest couturiers and top designers. Having started his career at one of London’s most renowned couture houses, Bellville Sassoon, Ian has revisited vintage sketches from his time there, studied the finer details of true couture and combined it with his innovative style. Ian hopes to make the essence of real couture available to the modern bride.

Alan Hannah Also returning to White Gallery this year is Alan Hannah, with his 2015 collection Floral Symphony. Combining art deco glamour with inspiration taken from flowers and colour, each style features exquisite embellishments, from

the Summer dress featuring beautiful hand painted pink roses to Venus, featuring delicate lace which has been specially dyed taupe to match the organza skirt, giving a twist of colour to this light and airy dress.

with straps, sleeves, beading and buttons all in an exquisite array of fabrics and colour palette. The 2016 collection marks Charlotte’s 12th year in British Bridal fashion. The Balbier brand continues to evolve whilst always maintaining Charlotte’s signature style.

The 2016 collection from Naomi Neoh is inspired by the ethereal and poetic elegance of the wild and beautiful English woodlands which are captured in the idealisation of a Midsummer Night’s Dream. The new designs continue to include Naomi’s ever popular signature soft, floating, silk

chiffon skirts and use of delicate tones of blush pinks and peach, but with a new addition of an ‘oyster’ hue. The 2016 collection also sees the introduction of a new guipure lace used for illusion necklines and delicate straps, which fits perfectly with the free spirit and mystical feeling of this collection.

Ivory&Co.

Ivory & Co will return to White Gallery London with a new collection for 2015/16. Designed in a gorgeous array of flowing silk fabrics, the dresses will be feminine and intricate with amazing corsetry to produce flattering silhouettes. Skirts will be flowing with long trains inspired by the dramatic sweep of high fashion in the 1920s, 30s and 1940s and bodices are embellished with dazzling Swarovskis and lace appliques; think a cross between a Midsummer Night’s Dream and embellishments from ancient Greece and mythology.

Additional British labels taking part in White Gallery London 2015 include Stephanie Allin, Sassi Holford, Blue Bridalwear, Qiana, Zaeem Jamal, Katya Katya Shehurina, Mooshki, Emma Hunt, Terry Fox, Catherine Deane, Andrea Hawkes, Savin London and Sabina Motasem.

40 CONFETI

I became involved in fashion design…at an

early age. It has always been my dream since I was a little girl to be a fashion designer, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

I specialised in bridal gowns because…

I have always loved beautiful clothes, so when it comes to bridal wear I feel that I can truly find an outlet for my creativity and not be as limited in my design. I also think my designs fill a gap; they are stylish and feature Scandinavian silk and handmade lace.

I would describe my personal style as…

a feminine, elegant look with a touch of bohemian luxury.

My biggest achievement to date is… being able to survive solely on my hobby, which is just amazing. Another milestone moment was opening the first Zetterberg store in Gothenburg. During 2015 I will also open another store in Stockholm.

Bridal trends in 2015 will be…

minimalistic, bohemian, narrow silhouettes, long sleeves and lace.

I gain inspiration from… my travels, vintage

At the moment I’m working on…

our ready to wear collection, which we will sell in Scandinavia and Europe.

boutiques and art.

My average day…

varies; it could be anything from production planning to purchasing and meeting clients.

CONFETI 41

If a bride chooses a dress from Zetterberg Couture, she can expect… a very nice atmosphere in the store, since the building is from the 17th century. Our collection is filled with beautiful silk and lace fabrics, which exude a vintage romanticism.

For a destination wedding, I would recommend…

an ankle dress with little volume; it should match the bride’s personality and not make her feel like she is wearing a costume.

recian designer Christos Costarellos has received widespread acclaim from the bridal industry’s most important critics. After showcasing his collection at New York International Bridal Week last year, the bridal label was praised for its understated elegance and luxury, superior craftsmanship and strong character. The show brought Christos Costarellos into the international arena for bridal fashion and the label has also made significant headway into the US market. We particularly love the way in which the designer is inspired by the history of his country in his inventions. For example, he incorporates whimsical lace patterns from the Aegean islands and the minimalist look of Ancient Greek dresses. His gowns possess a distinctly modern feel whilst still remembering to acknowledge the rich and beautiful past history of Greece. Some of the gowns from the collection also exude a bohemian feel. Artistic influences such as inserts infused with soft colours and contrasting lace appliques add a new dimension to the typical wedding dress you so often see in bridal boutiques across Europe. It’s not often that the entire CONFETI team are so taken by a bridal collection, but Christos Costarellos had us from the first second we entered his website.

G

one are the days when your wedding dress would be hung in your wardrobe merely to collect dust and be forgotten. Newlyweds who want to finish their big day

Rock the Frock with a flourish are increasingly embracing a whole new wedding custom. ‘Rock the Frock’ or ‘Trash the Dress’ involves defacing your wedding gown in front of a photographer who captures the moment on camera.

The ‘trashing’ can involve almost anything you can imagine: from post-wedding para-sailing in your bridal gown to a champagne spray party, the sky is the limit. a

Many bridal photographers along the Coast offer ‘Trash the Dress’ packages but on a recent shoot for CONFETI Magazine we employed the help of Eloy Muñoz and his assistant Aleksandra Foit.

CONFETI 49

CONFETI speaks to the Trash the Dress photographers about their vision for the photo shoot and how difficult it was really to capture the desired shots.

Why do you think the Trash the Dress custom has become so popular? Normally Trash the Dress shoots are organised some time after the wedding because there’s no time on the day itself, so it gives brides a second occasion to wear their beloved wedding dress. The photos on the actual wedding day have to be very structured to ensure every guest is captured in at least one photo, whereas on a Trash the Dress shoot, it is much more relaxed and this is always reflected in the finished images. The couple have the freedom to be more creative and just have fun. What was your vision for the shoot? Was there a certain look you were trying to create? We wanted to capture the fluidity of the dresses. When we met with the dress designer Agustin Torralbo, we discussed how to create shots that would make the model and the dresses look beautiful.

50 CONFETI

Why would you recommend newlyweds to take part in such a photo shoot? I would say that it’s something totally different. Couples will have so much fun being creative in a beautiful location of their choice. On the wedding day there are so many restrictions, whereas a Trash the Dress shoot is more natural and often newlyweds are happier with the photos as a result.

Who was the model? Did she find it difficult to stay looking beautiful whilst submerged in the water? Elsa from MAC Models was selected to participate in the shoot. She is young but acted with such professionalism and immediately understood the brief. If you are a recent bride and interested in doing a Trash the Dress underwater shoot specifically, you obviously have

to be comfortable in water, like swimming and know how to move naturally underwater. What other ‘Trash the Dress’ locations work well? Anything from a beautiful beach location to the mountains or a specific city such as Paris or Rome are all fantastic settings for this kind of shoot and would create stunning photos. Is there a certain style of dress that works particularly well for these shoots? Or is any dress okay? All types of wedding dress are fine for a Trash the Dress photo shoot. The most important thing is to come ready to play out this special moment between the two of you on camera.

O

ON YOUR BIG DAY

ver the past 10 years of doing wedding make-up, I have seen how the styles of brides change, from the super natural who only request a flawless foundation, a bit of mascara and gloss to those who want full-on dramatic Kim Kardashian eyes. Whatever your request may be on your big day it is important to factor in a few points when deciding on the all-important issue of “Do I go for a smoky or natural look?” Both will look beautiful but be sure to understand why a make-up artist will always push for a stronger eye, without making you look overdone; it’s all about optical illusion. As a professional make-up artist, it is my job to enhance all your natural features and make them stand out, both in person as well as in photographs. With my background in Fashion Shoots and Beauty Editorial, I can guarantee all those little extras I do will create the ideal look for your big day.

Therefore you need to opt for darker framed eyes. You can choose whether you prefer to line the top or bottom, darker shades of brown, stronger brows, longer thicker lashes, make highlighter features more apparent to achieve a greater contrast between the two. So taking all the following into consideration, its important to remember that the application of wedding day make-up is different to what you are used to applying on a regular basis. It has to last all day and look picture perfect in daylight as well as indoors. Another important factor to remember is that your hair and make-up shouldn’t overpower your dress, they have to complement it!

1.The eyes need to be framed in order for them to appear larger from a distance

2.The bright camera flash alone

will eat about 20 per cent of your make-up.

3.Getting married in the sunshine will also make your make-up appear lighter than what you will see indoors.

56 CONFETI

Once you have your dress, your ideas for hair and make-up will begin to flow. You may have had a vision of what you thought you would always look like, but your wedding dress idea may change from a princess gown to a chic vintage dress, leaving you with new ideas for hair and make-up. If your wedding dress is soft, romantic and pretty, heavy make-

up is not going to complement it. Instead, opt for softer smoky eyes with browns and tones of pink to highlight the romance. The same applies to your hair - if you choose a soft, boho loose hair design, you will need to keep the make-up pretty and dewy, so that everything works together rather than clashing. Look through bridal magazines, Google wedding make-up and hair ideas and red carpet looks to gather as much inspiration as you can to create your very own wedding day look. I have to admit that I think a smoky eye, with three or four different shades, is the most beautiful when it comes to an elegant wedding look. Nothing screams ‘classy’ like a great application of eye and face make-up. I will always try to explain and show the bride why it is so important to go that little bit darker when adding a top liner, smudging the bottom, adding false lashes or just darkening the corners with a rich chocolate brown. All of these extras help to create a celebrity styled eye. I think there is a very fine line between a caked, heavy smoky eye and an elegantly smooth version. Your eye should appear made up but not over done. Using professional tricks and tips will create the perfect smoky eye for your personal style, which is where choosing the right makeup artist plays a big part. If you know someone who recently got married and looked fabulous on their wedding day - ask them who their make-up artist was! Personal recommendations are always the best. Very often your wedding venue will have a list of make-up artists that they recommend or you can search online. Even on recommendation I can’t stress enough how important a trial is. Everyone is different and for your own peace of mind, it’s best you know exactly what you will look

like on your big day. So if you find someone who is available, arrange a trial and make sure you take lots of images of looks that you love from magazines and online so they can recreate the desired look for your face shape,

eye shape and personal taste. Or you can book in with me for a personal one-to-one wedding make-up lesson, where I will be able to teach you how to create your wedding day make-up.

THE

FACTOR Our resident beauty expert and four brides-to-be share their views on the hottest products to hit the beauty stands.

ERBORIAN BB Creme Au Ginseng Nicola: I was suspicious of this creme. It looked to be quite an ashy colour and I couldn’t see how it was going to work with my skin tone. When applied, the creme is transformed by the warmth of the skin and the formula’s chameleon colouring adapts to the skin’s natural tone, giving the perfect tonal coverage. It is designed to give you a very natural, ‘no makeup’ look. I did still need concealer under my eyes and on the darkest parts of my pigmentation but, other than that, it gave a flawless finish. Mona: I do not wear a lot of make-up and hate the feeling of foundation on my skin. I have spent years looking for a product that leaves my skin looking healthy and glowing but still able to breathe. The BB cream applies smoothly, covering redness and spots (much to my surprise) and as the day passes it continues to perfect the skin and blur any blemishes. 60 CONFETI

URBAN DECAY Naked Palette 3 Nicola: As I have all the other Naked Palettes I couldn’t wait to Experiment with 12 never-seen-before (and insanely beautiful) rose-hued neutrals from Urban Decay. From the lightest beige pinks for highlighting shades to super-dimensional black and deep mauve hues for edgy, smoky lines, Naked Palette 3 allows you to create limitless looks. As with the Naked 1 and 2 you can easily change your day make-up to your night make-up with the stunning darker colours in the palette, which are vibrant with little to no fall-out. The only downside of this palette – as with the previous Naked palettes - is the lack of matt shades.

Georgia: I love this palette; it might be my favourite of them so far and I use this palette on a daily basis. I’m personally a sucker for rose gold and found it to be really pretty on my skin. Darkside was my favourite shade, as it was somewhat unusual and it wasn’t too frosted. If you’re looking for a romantic bridal look, these blush and pink tones would help you create gorgeous variations. I also loved the Eyeshadow Primer Potion sampler with resealable samples of all four formulas (Original, Sin, Eden and Anti-Ageing - each sample holds about a week’s worth of primer.) I used the original primer for my wedding make-up and my eyeshadow didn’t budge all day. EMBRYOLISSE Lait-Crème Concentré Nicola: Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is a creamy moisturising lotion that is really three products in one: make-up artists use it as a primer, moisturiser, and make-up remover. It also reduces irritation after shaving. It feels lovely on the skin and the tone of my complexion visibly improved thanks to Shea Butter, Aloe Vera and Soy Protein - all are rich in essential vitamins, fatty and amino acids, proven to stimulate cell renewal and collagen fibres. Hannah: You can see why this cream is a real beauty secret, favoured by dermatologists for decades. Light in texture and quickly absorbed, my skin instantly felt plumped, soothed and hydrated.. Perfect for my wedding day, Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré left my complexion soft, dewy and perfectly prepped for make-up.

TWEEZERMAN Slanted Tweezers Nicola: I am obsessed with eyebrows and need my tweezers to be on point – quite literally! Tweezerman’s slanted tweezers are positively the finest general use tweezers in the world. They grip precisely even the shortest of hairs and they’re also perfect for lifting off tiny bits of flaky skin, especially after applying make-up. Camila: Guaranteed to be the last tweezer you’ll ever buy. They firmly grip hairs at the base to ease them out without pinching skin and they come with a lifetime guarantee and free sharpening and the bright colours make them easy to find in a crowded makeup bag. They also make applying false lashes a cinch.

ImNy KIT

Multiple Emmy award winning makeup artist, Kevin James Bennett, gives CONFETI a little sneaky peek into his kit. Whether you are a pro or simply a make-up junkie you won’t want to miss out on this exclusive access to his bag of beauty tricks. Interview by Nicola McGeorge

In addition to his remarkable work, KJB is a highly sought after mentor and educator in the beauty world. Aptly nicknamed “Blenderella” he is without a doubt, one of the most intensive product experts in the industry. An admitted ‘make-up whore’ he really tells it like it is and is not afraid to be frank and honest - and that’s why we love him. SKINCARE / PRIMERS Bioderma Sensibio H2O Cleansing Water - this particular cleansing water removes even waterproof makeup, but is totally gentle for even the most sensitive skin. Embryolisse Lait-Crème’ Concentrate - this is the Holy Grail of pro moisturizers. If you’re a make-up artist and don’t know about it, shame on you. What’s so special about it? It addresses skin challenges like dehydration, flakiness, and irritation on an immediate basis so the make-up you apply over it will look the way it should - right now. Homeoplasmine Ointment pretty much every world renowned make-up artist, and beauty Francophile has this product. It’s a non-greasy, matt homeopathic ointment that I use in place of Lucas PawPaw and EA 8-Hour Cream (which are quite greasy).

62 CONFETI

It’s KILLER for dry lips, literally smoothing out the flaky skin and filling in the cracks for hydration without the sheen. Just a touch alleviates flaky, dry areas and instantly soothes and calms sun or wind burn. Whip Hand Cosmetics “Set The Stage Primer” - I don’t know what type of mad science was used to create this product. What I do know is that it replaced three different primers in my kit. It preps skin perfectly for a long-lasting make-up application, smooths surface texture and controls oil shine – and it works on ALL skin types without disturbing moisture balance (freakishly fabulous).

Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF 50 - sometimes you’re shooting outdoors and talent needs UVA/UVB protection. Unlike regular sun protection (which can compromise the stability of the make-up applied over it), I can mix this booster into moisturizer or primer with the confidence that it will provide protection without messing with my make-up work. FOUNDATION / CONCEALER Temptu S/B Pro Foundation - I use this very versatile airbrush

make-up as hand applied liquid foundation also. It’s silicone based and works brilliantly with all my cream foundations. MAQ Pro (Le Maquillage Professionel) and RCMA Color Process Foundationsthese wax-based cream foundations NEVER let me down. They offer truly versatile coverage and build beautifully when needed. The foundations and corrector colours produce a beautiful skin-like finish and the formulas are naturally water/ perspiration resistant.

Kryolan Dermacolor Concealer Circle - Dermacolor’s intense coverage is legendary and the “USA” 6 colour circle has the perfect selection of colours so you can match ANY global skin-tone. Can I tell you how nice it is to find a tightly edited ready-made palette with only the colours you need?

I carry Primary & Secondary Colours plus Tarred & Feathered (Black & White) MAQ Pro (Le Maquillage Professionel) - Classic Lip Palette Everything you need to create or adjust any lip colour in one very compact palette.

POWDER / OIL CONTROL RCMA No-Color Loose Powder - a totally colour-free loose powder (love that). Typically, my make-up applications need to stay stable for a long shoot schedule. This very effective loose powder lets me set complexion make-up without adding a dry powdery look and gives me the reassurance that it will remain intact, requiring only minimal touch-ups through the day. Kett Sett No-Color Powder (Pressed) - I like that this pressed powder controls oil shine and ‘mattifies’ the skin immediately without caking up like most pressed powders do. It’s great for touch-ups when you’re working in an HD format. Tatcha Oil Blotting Papers constant powdering on set over a long shoot creates massive powder build-up on the skin and will destroy a make-up’s HD compliancy. These oversized papers are like an oil control vacuum. I wrap the paper around a disposable (wedgeshaped) sponge so I can easily mop up excess oil even in nose creases without disturbing my make-up application. HIGHLIGHT / CONTOUR / BRONZER MAC Shaping & Sculpting Powders - the contour colours are totally on point, offering a truly grayed tone that looks like actual

Kryolan High Gloss – Long lasting super wet looking intense shine. I carry only 3 – Crystal, Silver and Gold. That’s all you really need.

shadow. The highlight colours are equally well balanced and very realistic looking even close up. Make Up For Ever Matt Bronze Powders - they apply smoothly, with no streaking, and blend easily. The colours are well calibrated to accommodate all skin-tones and they look totally natural - even on guys. EYE SHADOW * Viseart Eyeshadow Palettes Basic #01 (matte neutrals) #03 (shimmer neutrals) * Kryolan & Sugarpill Bright Matte Shadows * Ben Nye Lumiere Grande Pressed shimmering wet/dry shadows. * Make Up For Ever Loose Metal Powders & Diamond Powders OCC make-up Loose Color Concentrates (Pure Mica Pigments).

EYELINER / LIPLINER / MASCARA / BROWS Make Up For Ever is my go-to for all my pencils. Their Aqua Eye and Lip Pencils are amazing and I’m pretty sure there are no better kohl liners. I like the Kryolan waterproof cream liner because it dries a little slower, giving me extra play-time and I LOVE the silicone tipped HD Skinliner for dramatic hard-lines. I use drugstore mascara (my bad). * Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes * Make Up For Ever Aqua Lips * Make Up For Ever Kohl Pencils * Kryolan Cream Liners * Kryolan HD Skin Liner * L’Oreal Voluminous – Carbon Black * CoverGirl LashBlast - Clump * Crusher and Fusion Waterproof * CoverGirl Naturalash Clear Mascara LIPSTICK / LIPGLOSS OCC Lip Tars – I’m obsessed with these insanely pigmented matt lip creams.

Peter Thomas Roth – Matte Lip Balm Exactly what it sounds like – a lip balm with absolutely no shine (great for guys). MAKE-UP BRUSHES I partnered with Royal & Langnickel Brush Company to create a collection of over three dozen brushes that are high performance; cruelty free AND extra durable to stand up to the daily abuse make-up artists put their brushes through. The collection is named [R] evolution and it is truly the evolution of make-up brush design and technology. I am extremely proud of these brushes. I wash my brushes with Clean Apothecary Goat’s Milk Brush Soap (Grapefruit Scent). It has a ton of conditioners to care for your tools, but it cleans even heavily soiled brushes quickly. workingartistproductions.com If you would like to be taught by Kevin James Bennett in person, here are his European dates. From adhering to age old wedding traditions to breaking them and everything else in between, if you have any doubts about your big day, ask our expert and your questions will soon be answered! N

ASK THE

Expert

We have a really close group of friends and family and we are finding it really hard to think of ways to involve them in our ceremony. Have you got any suggestions for different ways we can include them in a meaningful way? - Sarah and Josh, marrying June 2016 I get really excited when couples ask me about how they can involve friends and family members in their ceremony. It is such a great way to allow your guests to participate in your ceremony rather than simply being spectators (although there is nothing wrong with just

64 CONFETI

that, either!) There really are so many ways of involving your guests, which all depend on how adventurous you are feeling and what idea appeals to you most. One great idea is to have a communal reading. This is where all of your guests speak lines from a reading, which is lead by your celebrant. This type of reading is called call and response and one of the easiest readings to do it with is the Apache Wedding Song, as this reading can be easily divided up, so that your celebrant says a few lines, followed by your guests, one after the other. It really is a lovely way to include everyone in the ceremony.

√ Pros: Everyone gets to be involved, which creates a really special vibe for the ceremony.

x Cons: You have to provide the text so that all your guests can follow along.

And if you want to do something other than a reading, then there are other ways to include your friends. A few years ago, I conducted a ceremony where a couple included a memory box ritual. What was different about what they did was they invited 10 good friends each to come up one by one and to hammer a nail into the lid to seal the box shut. It was very emotional and you could see that the friends were really honoured to be a part of the ritual. √ Pros: A lovely, heartwarming way of involving friends and family.

x Cons: Means you have to do a bit of DIY during your ceremony. Keep the nails and the hammer small and all should work out just fine!

I really love the idea of a candle ceremony but our ceremony is taking place on the beach and we’re worried it will be too windy. Have you any ideas for something similar that doesn’t involve flames? - Lena and Hugh, marrying August 2015

I hear this a lot and the good news is that there is a great alternative which has the same symbolism and significance but less hazard! The sand ceremony is the perfect alternative to the candle ceremony because the meaning is the same but it’s only the instruments that differ. So instead of three candles (the two individual taper candles and the central candle) you can have three glass containers (two identical containers filled with sand and one larger recipient which the sand will be poured into). A really lovely touch, which can be nicer than using artificial sands, is to use sand from the beach where you are marrying and perhaps another sand which might be local or significant to you. If two contrasting sands can’t be found then using artificial coloured sand will provide a contrast. And even if you aren’t getting married on a beach but there is a worry about a breeze, then the sand ritual is a great all-round alternative. We really want to have our dog at our ceremony as he is a huge part of our family? Can you give us some ideas of how pets can be included? It would be so great if he had a role. - Carly and Craig, marrying April, 2016 I have done quite a few ceremonies with dogs present and I must say they are by far some of my favourite wedding guests. Dogs rule! I have seen dogs as ring bearers, with the rings in an organza bag tied onto their collar. I’ve seen dogs walk down the aisle with the bride and sit by its owners throughout the duration of the

ceremony (he was a good boy!) and I’ve seen doggy guests, who’ve been witness to the ceremony and dogs with floral crowns! The key rule is to know what to expect from your pooch. Can he be trusted to walk down the aisle carrying your rings? Will he be a good boy for the duration of the ceremony? Or will he be a nuisance? Or maybe you might be a couple not bothered by your dog being a bit headstrong and naughty. It certainly adds to the ambiance of the ceremony, for sure! Pros: If you feel your dog is a part of your family, then you will love having him present and in years to come, your photos of this day will be all the more special.

Cons: If your dog is prone to running off, and generally doing his own thing then giving him too much responsibility may not be wise! Also, your venue of choice may not allow pets, so make sure you check this first.

Have you got a question for Natasha? Is there a ceremonial tradition that you’ve always wondered about but are not completely sure of, or are you interested in doing something different to the norm but not sure how? Don’t hesitate to send your questions to : amber@iconpublishing.es who will forward them onto our resident celebrant expert Natasha.

Chuppah…

A

figure often encountered in literature dealing with Jewish affairs is the Matchmaker. This has, of course, nothing to do with Swan Vestas, but rather with “Kiddushin”, the traditional Jewish name for marriage. The word actually means “dedication” or “sanctification”, and indicates that the rite is something far greater than a simple bonding between a man and a woman. Marriage, to an Orthodox Jew, is the fulfilment of a “Mitzvah”, a Divine Precept, whereby in the persons of the bride and groom one soul inhabits two bodies. For this important reason marriage cannot be haphazard, and this is where the Matchmaker comes in. He or she has a duty to bring together people who might be compatible. In such a meeting important matters pertaining to marriage are discussed, but according to Talmudic law the couple must also be attracted to each other physically. If the couple decide to go ahead a vort is held, which is a small family reception where the date of the marriage is decided, and a “tenaim” or contract is signed outlining the obligations of each side. The bride and groom (chosson and kallah) do not see each other for a week before the ceremony, so that their separation enhances their joy as

66 CONFETI

they meet again on the occasion of the marriage. An hour or so before the ceremony a reception is held at which the ketuvah, or marriage contract, is signed by the groom, witnessed by two people. The ketuvah is a legally binding agreement, written in Aramaic, dating back to Biblical times, and enshrined in Mishnaic law. It details the husband’s obligations towards his wife, and provides for him to pay her a sum of money and to support her should he divorce or predecease her. It is quite common to find a beautifully written and illuminated ketuvah framed and on display in a Jewish household. During the signing some nibbles are served, together with a few shots of spirits, accompanied by the toast “Lechaim!” (“to life!”) After this the groom, accompanied by his father, future father-in-law, and the male guests, proceeds to the room where the bride, seated on a throne like a queen, is receiving her guests. Having ascertained that the bride is indeed his intended wife, the groom covers her face with a veil (bedekin). Normally outside, a “Chuppah” has been erected. This is a decorated canopy, representing a symbolic home for the couple “under the stars”; a reference to the promise made by the Lord to

Abraham that his descendents should be as the stars of heaven. The groom stands under the chuppah clothed in a white kittel to indicate the newness of life to which both he and his bride

aspire. The bride arrives at the chuppah with her parents, to the sound of a Cantor singing from the “Song of Songs”. She circles the groom seven times with her mother and future mother-in-law,

whilst the groom prays that his unmarried friends may find their true partners in life. The seven circles refer to the seven days of creation, symbolising the fact that the couple are about to create their own new world together. The couple are then joined under the chuppah by a Rabbi or leading family member, who recites a blessing over a cup of wine, from which the bride and groom then drink. This cup symbolises life and those Divine blessings given to mankind, which are so often referred to in the Psalms; “Wine which maketh glad the heart of man”. The ketuvah is then read aloud and given to the bride, and the groom places a plain gold ring upon the bride’s finger. As he does so he recites “Behold,

you are sanctified to me with this ring, according to the Law of Moses and Israel”. A Rabbi then recites the Sheva Brachos (seven blessings) over a full cup of wine. These blessings may also be given by seven different people whom the families wish to honour. They praise God for His creation of the world, and for the creation of man and woman in particular. They express the hope that the couple will be as happy as were Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They ask that Jerusalem and the Temple will be restored. The couple then drink the cup of wine together, and the groom crushes a glass beneath his feet. This action has been a part of the marriage ceremony since Talmudic times, and symbolises

the need to keep the sorrowful history of Israel in mind even in times of joy. As the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, so its destruction must be mourned; “If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its cunning.” is often recited at this point. Nevertheless, as the glass breaks, the band plays, and guests cry “Mazeltov!”. (Rather cheekily, it has also been said that the breaking of the glass symbolises that this is the last chance that the groom will ever get to put his foot down!) Accompanied by dancing guests, the married couple then retire to the “private room” (cheder yichud) where they are alone for the first time. Their entry into the room must be witnessed by two people, as

this forms an integral part of the marriage service. Here they can eat, having fasted all day, whilst their guests similarly sit down to a festive meal. Having eaten, they make a triumphal entry into the room after the announcement “For the very first time, Mr and Mrs……”, and dancing takes place; the women on one side and the men on another, separated by a mechitzah (partition). Finally, the grace after meals (Birchas Hamazon) is recited, followed once again by the Seven Blessings over a cup of wine, shared by the newly married couple. After this, a discreet veil may be drawn over the proceedings…!

MEANT TO BE…

We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do. It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

YOU’RE MY BREATH OF

Fresh Air

Myriam and Javier took full advantage of the beautiful coastline of Southern Spain with a beach themed wedding that was elegant and contemporary.

Love at First Sight Javier and I met in Acapulco at a Mexican-Lebanese wedding. He saw me from across the dance floor and came over to introduce himself; from that moment on, we spent the next seven hours on the dance floor. When it was time to leave we were both very sad, but we both knew deep inside that it wasn’t going to be the last time we would see each other. After a few trips all over the world to be together and an amazing long distance relationship, I moved to Spain to do my MBA and get closer to the man I loved. One day, he surprised me with a trip to Copenhagen, the city he had lived in for five years and took me to the Museum of Modern Art, right in front of the sea. When we finished visiting the museum,

70 CONFETI

we went outside to soak up the amazing view. This is where he surprised me; he suddenly got on his knees and proposed. Costa del Sunshine We chose Spain for many reasons; first of all because this it is where we live, but also because it was a middle point for my family and friends that come from Lebanon and Canada. Another reason why we chose Spain, and Marbella and Estepona in particular, is because of the amazing weather. Good weather was one of my top priorities because I did not want to have the stress of worrying about there being rain on the day of my wedding, something that many brides stress about.

We chose PuroBeach as our venue because we wanted a nontraditional wedding party on the beach and an amazing ambience. This is exactly what PuroBeach offered us. It was actually the only venue that let us hold the party outside. Life’s a Beach My style for the wedding was elegant and fresh. Since the celebration took place on the beach, I opted for a strapless wedding dress with lace. The dress was adjusted and had two layers. My bridesmaids wore mint-blue strapless dresses and their style matched mine. I chose white flowers at the church and at the venue. The decoration was elegant and had a beach theme - everything was white and blue and the guests were seated on

different ‘islands’ (tables). The ceremony was in the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion in the middle of the Old Town in Marbella. The church is so beautiful that I did not have to add hardly any decoration. Eat. Sleep. Rave. Repeat With our beach wedding theme, special cocktails were served on the sand and we had a Hawaiian band that played exotic music. For dinner, guests enjoyed an extravagant buffet of Lebanese, Spanish and Japanese-Peruvian fusion food. Belly dancers entertained the guests during dinner and then, after the cutting of the cake and the speech, we had another type of band to kick-start the party. Once the DJ started, we had a

saxophonist play and also a fire show. We wanted to provide a lot of entertainment to surprise our guests and move away from a more traditional type of wedding. The cake was also white and blue and decorated with starfish. To make it easier for everyone, we opted for a beautiful three-tier cupcakes cake that didn’t need to be cut. Snap Happy I had a very tough time choosing a wedding photographer because I am not Spanish and my husband is from Madrid so we did not know anyone local to the area. I chose Bodakids because of their seemingly professional approach to every client. Their website was very clear and showcased some fantastic examples of their wedding photography. We also choose Bodakids Videos; I remember crying as I viewed a few of them online and it made me so excited for my own wedding day. I was very happy with the result of their work because they captured photos of each and every special moment.

Unforgettable Highlights One of my favourite moments was going down the stairs of my house in my wedding dress to be met with all my family and friends that had come from all over the world to be with me on my special day. I realized that I am so very blessed to have that many special people in my life. My second favourite moment was when my father walked me down the aisle because I could see how happy and proud he was. Another special highlight was of course when I saw my husband waiting for me at the end of the aisle and thinking, “This is actually happening!” Finally, I loved being on the dance floor with all my family and friends dancing like there was no tomorrow, my cousins and brother lifted my husband and me up in the air and I could just feel the joy of every single person in the room.

Live in the Moment I would advise brides-to-be to start preparing the wedding more than six months in advance. Enjoy every single preparation day because it is really fun even though it can also be stressful at times. The last thing I would advise is to enjoy every second of the wedding because each moment will happen only once, so don’t let anything or anyone stress you on that day; if things don’t go exactly the way it was planned, it doesn’t matter - because no one will know anyway!

It is very important to book the right photographer because at the end of the wedding, when your special day is over and you would like to re-live it again and again, the only things left are your memories and the photos.

We Found Love

Klaartje and Joeri brought boho chic to Sotogrande in an enchanting wedding with family and friends. City of Dreams My husband and I met 14 years ago when we were both students. We started out as good friends and two years later became a couple. One of our first trips together was to New York; we had such a fantastic time, falling in love with the city and each other. Many years later, we decided to visit the Big Apple again. It was there that Joeri proposed to me, at Jane’s Carousel (a beautiful, restored carousel from1922, set on the East River in Brooklyn Bridge Park) at dusk. I was totally surprised, but I didn’t hesitate for a second in saying, “Yes”. We then spent the evening at an Asian restaurant in The Mandarin Oriental, it was so romantic and we enjoyed spectacular views

over Central Park. It was the perfect night out. Shared Vision We travel to Southern Spain on a regular basis because my husband and his family are involved in business in Sotogrande; we fell in love with the area and, of course, the good weather years ago. It was therefore an immediate decision to look into having our wedding in Spain. Very soon we met Nigel (Davis) from Chez Vous Events who was happy to assist with the planning of our big day. From the beginning, it was clear to us that we all had the same vision for the wedding, especially after Nigel took us to the first potential venue. Las Sirenas was exactly what we

had dreamt of, the combination of the colours, the flora, the different areas around the building, the bohemian vibe of the place...we were sold! Bohemian in Blue We opted for a summer wedding with a bohemian touch. We wanted it to be romantic and enchanting, yet relaxed at the same time. For my dress I chose to wear a Belgian brand – Rembo Styling. They have perfected that romantic, fairytale vintage look in their gown collection. I didn’t want to wear a pure white dress as I did not think it would match the bohemian theme of the venue. My husband chose to wear a custom tailored light blue cotton and silk suit from Café Costume, also a Belgian brand, based in Antwerp.

Romy, a lovely eight-year-old girl who I used to babysit, was thrilled to be our flower girl and she did an excellent job. My two sisters were my bridesmaids. I wanted to give my sisters a little present so I got them the same clutch as mine and asked the designer (Belgian as well) – Annelies Timmermans – if she could adjust the lining to a blue one. On the inside, I had the fabric inscribed with the message, ‘To the moon and back! Thank you for being a part of it, 12.07.2014’. Las Sirenas is a magical place, especially in the summer with the light breeze and shady spots, as well as all of the luscious trees and flowers. The venue really didn’t need much decoration, but we placed some wild looking

flowers around the space, all in the same colours as my wedding bouquet. They looked like they were hand-picked, which created a romantic, understated look. We had a colour scheme of light blue and purple to match the groom’s suit and all accessories.

Real Weddings Our ceremony was led by Vicky Rhodes from Marbella Minister. We didn’t want the ceremony to take too long, but some close friends of ours read a poem and held short speeches, which gave it a more personalised feel. Towards the end of the service we wanted to surprise all the guests with a live band performing the song, All You Need is Love. The musicians were hidden in a little cave next to the ceremony area and emerged after playing the first notes of the song. It was a very special moment. A Moroccan Twist My husband and I are massive foodies so the cuisine at our wedding was always going to be an important part of the proceedings. We eventually chose to have different canapés during the cocktail reception, followed by a starter of Fresh Salmon Tartare then a buffet, which included

different Tagines with Lamb, Beef and Chicken, plus various salads and couscous. For the dessert, we also opted for a buffet, which featured a cake and different kinds of Pastries, Dessert Shooters and Macaroons. ‘To the moon and back’ was our cake topper, which was our motto for the wedding. The buffet was laid out beneath a huge tree, which had chandeliers and small lights hanging from it and looked magical. After dinner all of our guests moved on to the reception area where a dance floor was installed and the live band started the party. Following the band, Robert Mendoza played the electric violin before a DJ finally took over. Next to the dance floor, the swimming pool was decorated with floating candles and a Moroccan lounge area provided guests with a place to chill out. The lighting in general (with the varying styles and

colours) made a big impact on the ambience of the venue and this is all thanks to the work of Chez Vous.

made. From beginning to end, they were amazing and everybody had an unforgettable time on the dance floor.

Favourite Moments One of my highlights was spending the afternoon before the wedding with my bridesmaids having our hair and make-up done at Bliss in Estepona. We enjoyed some champagne at the salon and it made for a relaxed start to the day.

Timing is Key If I had to do it again, I would change nothing except maybe start one hour later as it was still quite hot during the ceremony at 6.30pm.

Making Sweet Music The Legal Aliens - was also superb! It was without a doubt one of the best choices we could have

A love

So Deep

Beatriz and Alejandro shared their special day with close family and friends in a magical purple inspired wedding at Hotel Los Monteros.

Beach Life I met Alex at a football match that he was playing in with some friends. We started off as good friends and then gradually our love story began to unfold. The proposal was so special. We were on a stunning beach in Puerto Rico, which is where Alex is from, there was an incredible sunset and all we could hear was the sound of the waves crashing onto the sand. My dreams came

true when he asked for my hand in marriage - and in such a beautiful setting too. Home Sweet Home Alex is Puerto Rican and we had always said that we would like to get married over there, however one weekend we found a really lovely beach in Marbella that ticked every box. We found the setting that we both wanted and it was right on our doorstep!

Purple Passion The first decision we made in the run up to our big day was to employ the wedding planning services of Romance Bodas. We couldn’t have made a better decision. Our wedding planner, Ximena, advised us every step of the way and helped make our dream a reality. She looked after us with such professionalism and care. Our theme was ‘romantic beach wedding’. We chose Hotel Los Monteros La Cabane as our wedding venue; it is a spectacular place and only a very short walk to the beach, which is exactly what we wanted. The colour scheme for the wedding was purple, so we decorated the venue with exotic white and purple orchids, which matched the bridal bouquet. All the wedding decoration was chosen with minute attention to detail, from the veils around the pool, the purple ribbons on each of the chairs for the ceremony, as well as the small purple crystals placed on each table to shine a beautiful light across the space.

76 CONFETI

My One and Only The ceremony was very romantic and included various contributions from family members, which gave it a special, personalised touch. The entire scene played out against the backdrop of the glittering blue sea and the faint sound of the waves. There really is no better feeling than hearing those words, “I do” and dedicating yourself wholly and truly to your partner in a declaration of love. A few tears were shed at that moment due to the immense happiness we both felt. Party Time! The cuisine at our wedding was a huge success. We selected options suggested by La Cabane, which were honestly exquisite. Alex was in charge of all the music, dedicating a lot of time and love to picking the perfect playlist for each stage of the day. Alex also prepared the playlist for the disco later on and his selected tunes got everybody up onto the dance floor until the end.

The first dance was a surprise for everyone, we performed a routine that left quite an impact on all of our guests; we sang and danced to Il Divo’s Hasta mi Final. It was very romantic and, as a grand finale at the end of the dance, the fireworks began to explode, which was also a surprise, and made for an unforgettable moment. We wanted the whole wedding celebration to be enjoyed by not just my husband and me, but all of our guests as well. Our wedding planner set up various meetings with photographers but we selected Nani de Perez based on the quality of her past work and also her passion for the craft. She made us feel so comfortable from the first moment we met and then during the photo shoot on the day itself. We both agree that her ability to make us feel so at ease is the reason why the photographs turned out so well in the end. It’s so important to book the right photographer because, aside from your memories, the images will be the only thing to remember the day. As our wedding planner Ximena said, there is no second take on your wedding day, everything has to be perfect the first time around because it can never be repeated. For most brides, it is the moment you have always dreamt of from a young child.

The Dream Day I couldn’t choose one standout moment, the truth is that every single part of the day was magical: the ceremony in front of the sea, the dancing, walking into the reception whilst singing the Black Eyed Peas song I Gotta Feeling, the fireworks…it would be impossible to pick only one highlight! I would not change anything, we will relive the special memories from the wedding every day for the rest of our lives. Live In the Moment It’s so important to soak up every single moment of your special day from the minute you start organizing the wedding. From choosing every small detail, to making each decision and ultimately planning your dream day together, the whole experience should be relished because the day itself passes so quickly and you must enjoy it to the absolute maximum.

WEDDING BREAKFAST

at Tiffany’s?

Carla and Joseph opted for a touch of Hollywood glamour for their Marbella wedding

Way Out West Even though Joseph and I met when we were both children, there was never any doubt (in my mind at least!) that we would marry one day. We first encountered each other in a beautiful restaurant in Santa Monica, California - of all places - and, as we grew older, our feelings for each other changed and intensified. When

78 CONFETI

Joseph finally performed the ‘down on one knee’ routine there surely could have been no doubt in his mind that I would snap up the opportunity to marry him. Spanish Ceremony Given our international relationship, it could have taken some time to decide where our wedding ceremony should

take place, but fortunately I had spent my 18th birthday at the Hotel Puente Romano with my twin sister and we both loved it. I remember at the time turning to her and actually saying, “When I get married it has to be here!” so the usual soul searching that goes on was nipped in the bud completely.

serenaded by Moon River, the theme from Breakfast At Tiffany’s, which is probably Audrey Hepburn’s most famous movie. The Big Picture We choose Solwedding for our wedding film and photography and we were delighted with the results that Greg achieved. We knew that we were in safe hands because he had been the chosen photographer for both of my sisters’ weddings between 2011 and 2014 and he hadn’t disappointed. What we were looking for was someone with vision, imagination and a non-intrusive way of getting great shots that perfectly captured the mood of the day and this is exactly what he delivered. Let’s face it, your wedding day passes in a flash and you will need those photos to remind you of just how amazing it was. Plus, Greg was so quick and covered so many of our guests that we were surprised and delighted later to be able to catch up on some sublime moments that we had missed on the day!

I also knew that Marbella was a great place and could provide all the services that we would need because my sister married in the Marbella Club Hotel, while my brother chose Nikki Beach and my whole family was incredibly impressed by everything that the wedding planners were able to achieve. Hollywood Glamour Anyone who knows me will tell you that my favourite movie star is Audrey Hepburn by a country mile. Now, there was a woman who had beauty, style and class! Of course, we can’t all be lucky enough to be Hollywood stars, but when I saw the Lavina gown by Maggie Sottero, I knew that I had found my dream dress. It had a fitted bodice in organza with stunning lace detailing and then fishtailed out at the bottom in a way that exuded sophistication. I loved it the minute I first laid eyes on it. My bridesmaids all wore dresses that reflected my chosen theme of serious Hollywood glam, which continued to the reception afterwards. We had booked a violinist and sax players and were

Magic Moments I think that my favourite moment was the entry of the violinist at the beach club after the formal photography session in the gardens of Hotel Puente Romano. It really was just like a movie! The great thing about our wedding day is that we both agree that if we had to do it again we wouldn’t change anything. My advice to all brides-to-be would be to live in the moment and enjoy it all. You only get married once and you absolutely must savour every second!

International Real Weddings ALEKSEY& DASHA

Our Italian

Dream

Dasha and Aleksey wanted a romantic, fairytale ceremony, so it was not surprising that their chosen venue was Italy’s gorgeous Lake Como.

80 CONFETI

Acting on impulse Like many couples these days our romance started at work. We met in a corridor at the office and it was love at first sight. I liked Alexey straight away and he seemed to like me too and over the months we found that we had more and more in common. Eventually Alexey asked me to marry him one evening when we were at home with my family, but it was not a planned action – more an emotional impulse. Of course, once we had decided that marriage was a good idea the race was on to find the perfect venue with a staff that could make all of our wedding day dreams come true. Destination Italy We knew from the outset that we would be more than willing to transport our wedding party to another country, so even though that might sound like we had a world of choice, it also made it very difficult to decide exactly where we wanted to be! In the end we found Villa Balbionello almost by chance. We were at the offices of Marina Grishko, who we had chosen as our wedding planner and we happened to see a video on her web page. It was one of those magic moments where we just looked at each other and, in that moment, we knew that we had found our venue. The location, the appearance of this grand old villa and the promise that the staff had plenty of experience in handling weddings was too good to resist. We asked Marina straight away if she could arrange to book this gorgeous place that had touched our hearts so profoundly for our wedding. Bridal Style As with the venue, I had some excellent luck with my dress – can

you believe that I found my ideal gown in the first five minutes of visiting the first store? It’s true that finding your perfect wedding dress is a little like falling in love and I certainly fell hard for the Vera Wang designed Helena, which offered all the tradition and romance that I wanted. It featured three types of Chantilly lace and a very full skirt, which seemed the perfect match for Villa Balbionello! For the bridesmaids we ordered dresses in different styles and varying shades of peach, but using the same floral print, so that they would all be able to show their own personalities on the day, but also seem part of the same unit. The villa is such a beautiful place that it was quite a challenge to decide what décor we should use, but in the end we chose a lot of different colours and created different zones, each of which was special in its own way. We found that our guests especially enjoyed the photo zone, where a sofa decorated with fresh flowers was the perfect place to pose for a wedding shot or two. I was very firm that no synthetic fabrics should be used, only cotton. Beneath the dome we hung a crystal chandelier and a garland of greenery. The ceremony itself took place on a hilltop at Villa Balbionello at sunset, with music provided by a violinist. Party On! We wanted to continue the Italian theme by offering our guests Italian canapés as they arrived at the reception afterwards and a variety of cheese, sausages and tomatoes with mozzarella were served. Afterwards we invited everyone to enjoy a sit-down meal that featured some classic European dishes and the fantastic group, Gypsy Queens made the whole

event seem very relaxed and homely, which was what we wanted, despite the glamorous location! Our cake was a traditional white iced cake with many levels and decorated with natural garden roses. We had heard great things about Event Boutique of Marina Grishko, which was the main reason that we chose her and the team to organise our wedding and we were very happy with the service she provided. She certainly helped everything to go with a swing. Q&A with Dasha Why do you think it is important to book a wedding planner? Firstly, it is impossible to handle the whole thing all by yourself and, secondly, on our wedding day we wanted to be able to relax with nothing to worry about. Most of all, we needed to feel that everything was under the control of people we trusted. What were your favourite moments? My traditional duties as a bride I found provided the most touching moments of the wedding day. Also, I enjoyed spending half the day with my mother and my friends, drinking champagne, applying our makeup, dressing and anticipating the ceremony and reception. Complete the following sentence, please. “If I had to do it again, I would change ...?” Not one single thing. What would be your advice for future brides getting married? Only ever marry for love and, when choosing your wedding planner, trust your instincts.

CONFETI’S

ORIENTAL HONEYMOON TOUR

CONFETI travels to Southeast Asia and finds out why Vietnam has become one of the world’s dream honeymoon destinations. By Constanza Mtz

‘Còm o´n’ means thank you in Vietnamese. You will repeat this word so many times that you may have mastered the pronunciation in just a couple of days. In any case, it is a phrase that you will conquer early on in your stay, because you won’t be able to thank its people enough for their obliging nature, kindness and hospitality. Vietnam is a country that inspires respect; it humbles you. After a lifetime of occupations and struggles (all of which it

84 CONFETI

resisted), Vietnam has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world and, even though it is still possible to see reminders of the the war throughout the whole country, the liveliness and courage of its people remain intact. In addition to the Vietnamese people’s warm-heartedness and rich cultural heritage, there is jaw-dropping natural scenery, crazy - but thrilling - cities and delicious, world renowned cuisine, making Vietnam an

unmissable destination. Whether you are planning an exciting adventurous honeymoon, or relaxed long days on dreamy beaches with your loved one, Vietnam will not disappoint. And did I mention you can have all this on a budget? Believe me, you will start planning your next trip even before heading home!

Hanoi, Halong Bay & Cát Bà Island

InterContinental Hanoi West Lake: ihg.com Located in Northern Vietnam Hanoi, the capital is Vietnam’s second largest settlement after Ho Chi Minh City. Walking around the Old Quarter, filled with artisans, merchants and fabulous street food spots, it is clear why Hanoi is in the Top 10 of Trip Advisor’s list of World Best Destinations.

Cát Ba Beach Resort: catbabeachresort.com

You must be ready for it, though. Expect a dynamic atmosphere in which - somehow - organised chaos reigns. Infinite snakes of electric cables tangled around poles, millions of motorbikes moving seemingly at random, a continuous symphony of beeping horns… a restless pace. “Be confident. Don’t run, don’t hesitate and show no fear”. This advice may sound more appropriate for preparation to meet a hungry lion, but in Hanoi it is just one of the tips for crossing a busy road. This is why the selection of your honeymoon hotel is essential. To get the best of both worlds, we recommend the InterContinental Hanoi West Lake. Peaceful, stunning lake views where time stands still, incredible five-star attention, stunning architecture and a mere five minute taxi ride to the electric heart of the city.

86 CONFETI

Waking up to a room service breakfast on your terrace and gazing at the Hanoi skyline across the serene West Lake is a truly magical experience. At the Intercontinental you will enjoy luxury accommodation and customer service at its best. After enjoying the urban flavour, you must definitely take the trip to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Halong Bay. Only four hours from Hanoi you will find these 2000 jewels which, according to legend, were spat out by dragons and turned into islands. Cruise in a private boat and explore the mystical caves; you will feel part of the spellbinding landscape. For a stay, we strongly recommend you to head to Cát Bà, the largest island in Halong Bay and book a bungalow right on the shore at Cát Bà Beach Resort (if you are sufficiently lucky to find one available). An enchanting, secluded beach where you will sleep merely a few steps from the crystalline water, its location makes it the perfect spot for a romantic getaway. You can spend the days relaxing on the white sand, or, for more adventurous couples, there are plenty of options like rock climbing, kayaking and trekking.

Hue

If you are a culture junkie and you want to understand Vietnam’s myriad idiosyncrasies, Hue is an unmissable stop: you will find plenty of palaces, temples, pagodas and tombs. Its walls, once home to Emperors, will inspire you with awe. Hue, located in central Vietnam and just an hour’s flight from Hanoi, used to be the imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, which ruled the country for more than 140 years. The regime was characterised by the influence of French colonialism

88 CONFETI

which still permeates some areas of the city. The historic Perfume River, with its charming boat rides, guards the ancient Imperial city while enriching Hue with an expansive atmosphere. For a perfect stay in Hue, there is no other option than La Résidence. From its impressive façade and sophisticated lobby and bar to the marvellous pool and gardens, the hotel is a fantastic melange of French and Asian luxury.

This sublime high-end boutique hotel, member of the MGallery collection of renowned French hotel group, Accor and winner of Condé Nast and Travel Asia awards, boasts 122 rooms in the former residence of the French Colonial Governor. Its main building and structure remains intact and some features, such as the first floor and stairs, are an authentic reminder of the past. There are ten rooms in this original building, each with a different theme and layout. You may find yourself in a bird sanctuary in the D’Ornithologue suite or in a colonial

Art-Deco Deluxe overlooking the Flag Tower Bastion and the Perfume River. Perhaps you would prefer to be amazed by the Oriental opulence (with a French accent) of the Voyage en Chine suite? However, if you really want to spoil yourselves (and if you can afford it) opt for the superluxe Resident Suite; an impressive 72 square metre bedroom plus over 200 square metres of terrace with a 360 degree view, occupying the whole of the top floor. In La Résidence, every feature tells a story and every little detail of the setting has been thought of. Black and white photos of Hue’s past decorate the walls, as dark wood and high ceilings accentuate its character. Paris-based interior

designer Brigitte Dumont de Chassart ensured conceptual and stylistic cohesion for this building, which was restored in 2005. Moreover, La Résidence doesn’t only appeal to guests’ sight, but also to their sense of smell. They say a smell can not only influence your mood, but it is also associated with memory. This proves true in La Residence. Woody ylang is the unique aroma that welcomes you from the lobby and accompanies to your room. A mixture of cinnamon, patchouli and ylang ylang, inspired by the history of the residence and the waters of the Perfume River, it was composed exclusively for the hotel by acclaimed Laurent Severac, a French creator of botanical perfumes and essential oils, who has lived in Vietnam for nearly 20 years.

The attention to detail doesn’t only apply to the charming decoration and atmosphere; the staff and their quality of service are on top of absolutely everything in a genuine, yet unobtrusive manner. Everybody knows your name and room and will happily step out of their role in order to help you. Special thanks to Mr. Puoc Dang for his formidable hospitality, and to Ms. Tran Thi Minh Tam at the Concierge desk for her charming efficiency. From restaurant booking to flights and travel enquiries, she will arrange anything you need. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience luxury at its finest in the heart of a cultural landmark. resa@la-residence-hue.com la-residence-hue.com

La Résidence is also well known for its splendid spa. In 2013, it was named Vietnam’s Best Boutique Spa at the World Luxury Spa Awards. It comprises seven relaxation rooms and a herbal sauna and Jacuzzi. Indulge yourselves with a 60 minute full body Vietnamese massage, followed by a 40 minute rice wine and ginger bath…an unforgettable unwinding experience on your honeymoon. CONFETI 89

Nha Trang

Last stop on our Vietnam adventure, is Nha-Trang, located in the South. This coastal city boasts a microclimate and has many exceptionally beautiful natural features; swimmers will be delighted to learn that the sea is calm and warm all the year round. Nha-Trang is also surrounded by an archipelago of more than 19 islands, featuring mountains and gorgeous white sand beaches. Nha-Trang has been named one of the world’s 30 most beautiful bays. In the midst of this Eden lies the unique and spectacular boutique beach resort Amiana. Located on the bay, this lush, secluded gem offers genuine barefoot luxury living. Expect VIP treatment from the second you land. A beautiful girl will be waiting at the airport to greet you and walk you to your luxury shuttle,

92 CONFETI

equipped with air-conditioning, refreshing towels and fresh water. Upon arrival, the staff will be prepared to turn your checkin experience into a relaxing welcome, overlooking an enormous infinity fountain that blends with the sky and sea. There is nothing but smiles and great attitude among Amiana’s team. You will be instantly moved by their friendliness and kindness. And the best part – your room - is yet to come! Amiana’s Natural Living philosophy means that all of the rooms have been created using local materials and culturally sensitive interior designs. No luxurious detail has been omitted: from flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and ambient lighting to the most spectacular outdoor bathroom you can imagine, these rooms are beyond spectacular. Fitted with sun-lit

roof, pebble and slate flooring, an outdoor shower and a big enough for two, ornate, free-standing bath tub, you won’t find many hotels that provide this level of luxury. As if this wasn’t enough, they will cover your king-size bed with petals, and the bistro table with champagne on ice and exotic fruits.

The Bacaro Restaurant, adjacent to one of the infinity pools, is an excellent option for dining al fresco while overlooking the Nha-Trang skyline. You can choose and combine delicious a la carte Asian or Western menus. Every morning, after a splendid buffet feast, you will face a tough choice; relaxing by the infinity pool on the upper level, or walking the short distance to the sandy beachpool with its salt water and rocks that are ideal for sunbathing. You can also go further, to the private cove at the far end – and all this while enjoying a cocktail from the hip Pool Bar. After a chill-out day at the pool, you can’t miss the opportunity to enjoy total relaxation and revitalisation at Amiana’s famous spa. Its services include massages, beauty care treatments and a Japanese hot rock pool, in addition to the sauna and steam rooms. If you want more than sand and sun-beds, the resort has a great

offer on sport and leisure activities: yoga, beach volleyball, mini golf, kayaking, diving lessons, snorkelling and tennis are also available. The only possible drawback we could find is that once you arrive at Amiana you won’t want to leave the resort, but if you can find enough strength to leave these phenomenal amenities, try one of the many tours organised by the hotel staff. A visit to the traditional fishing village, a Dam Market early morning excursion, a boat ride to discover some of the other islands, a picnic on a private beach and - a must for honeymooners - a sunset champagne cruise. We urge you to go and find out for yourself; Amiana on the Bay will surprise and enchant even the most jaded traveller. We guarantee you and your loved one will treasure this memory forever. reservations@amianaresort.com amianaresort.com

Koh Samui, Thailand

After our rewarding, unforgettable experience in Vietnam, we were not ready to leave Southeastern Asia. It felt irresistible to extend the honeymoon and leap over to the world’s quintessential honeymoon destination - Thailand. With two long coastlines and idyllic islands anchored in azure waters, Thailand is the ideal tropical getaway whether you are madly sociable or rather more reclusive. Lush jungles meet white sand beaches, bordered by sea with the most beautiful turquoise hue you have ever seen. Like its world renowned cuisine, Thailand is tropical, exotic and full of flavour. But let’s go straight to the precious treasure we found nestled on the blissful beach of northern Chaweng in Koh Samui; the Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort & Spa. From the beautiful hotel entrance, where a candlelit bridge guides you to a welcoming reception and exquisite Thai hospitality, to the stunning infinity pool, you will really appreciate the alluring architecture of the hotel, built in complete harmony with its natural surroundings. As we learned in Anantara, a proper romantic honeymoon deserves a luxury suite with its private plunge pool. No need to fight for the perfect lounge chair in your bikini when a refreshing dip in your birthday suit is right next to your bed. With privacy guaranteed, there is a reason Do Not Disturb signs were created.

94 CONFETI

Adjacent to your pool lies a comfortable wooden suspended lounge where you will find yourselves spending a lot of your time. The room features a semioutdoor bathroom and shower and is equipped with a full range of fabulous luxury amenities, including exotic fruits and artisan soaps. Tree Tops - true to its name - is a fantastic, fairytale fine dining restaurant. With each table set in its own individual tree top four metres above the ground and overlooking the seaside and night sky, this is truly an experience you and your loved one cannot afford to miss. It may be a little dearer than we were accustomed to in Vietnam or on the streets, but we are talking fine dining: Snow Fish steamed with Lemongrass, Champagne Foam, Mango Relish and Basmati Rice, paired with one of the vast, eclectic selection of wines (a rare find in the island), this was an evening to remember. For idyllic sunrise views, head down to Ocean Kiss Restaurant, located next to the handmade ceramic infinity pool. The breakfast buffet ensures that no two meals will be the same. Before

you are seated, you are greeted with a variety of fresh juices made on the spot, you can then try the options on offer: traditional Thai warm dishes, fresh oven baked selection of breads and pastry, an international eggs and waffles station cooks to your specification, an air-conditioned salad bar abounding with fruits, greens, cheeses and cold meats, sushi, fresh ground coffee…everything you can imagine. After that feast, it’s about time to experience what originally made Thailand famous - its breathtaking beaches. Anantara’s privileged location allows you to enjoy a private stretch of beach or, after a 10 minute kayak expedition, to explore the deserted island opposite. Another of the dream honeymoon scenarios Anantara provides is the Dining by Design offer. This is the ultimate private dining journey with a private chef and butler at your service under a romantic marquee on the beach. Despite the global tourism that has inundated Koh Samui, due to its picture perfect beaches, seafood and world class spas, the island also offers a side where there are still family run authentic Samui restaurants, towns buzzing with locals and unspoiled nature. We recommend that you lose yourselves in the island, discover its hidden places and then return to the fabulous Anantara for a luxury couples massage. Spa treatments are not taken lightly in Anantara; therapists

take the time to sit with you to discuss your medical history and any specific muscular zone you may need treated, while you sip a healthy, non-alcoholic cocktail. The massage room is a luxury in and of itself. Everything gently whispers serenity; the soft, ambient music, the dimly candlelit room, the aroma of floral essences; it is truly a healing experience. In fact, the whole stay is a rejuvenating dream. Anantara Lawana Koh Samui is filled with memories in the making. lawana-chaweng.anantara.com CONFETI 95
