Welcome back... to the second half of the season
Many thanks for everyone who came along and made the autumn season so memorable. From the extraordinary to the sublime, we had quite a time… and there’s so much more to come. In the new season you’ll get to experience exclusive UK premieres from several of our amazing Associate Artists.
Fabulous family work here too as ever - I’m delighted to welcome Little Bulb back with their latest magical show, Four Seasons (P.24) And if you just fancy a laugh there’s plenty of those too in a season packed with comedy (from P.30). Here you have it - so many Reasons to be Cheerful in 2024! See you here!
Improbable will create ImprobaBand for the first time with some very special guests (see P.8 ), and the fabulous 1927 will present the World Premiere of the English language version of Please Right Back (see P.12). As you would expect, we have some fantastic music coming up with new shows added for YolanDa Brown (P.18) and the legendary Blockheads (P.14), and you won’t want to miss Nouvelle Vague (P.16) - a rare chance to witness pop music legends live in concert. Some truly historic events here as we present Gavin Bryars’ masterpiece Jesus’ Blood in Canterbury Cathedral to mark his 80th birthday; one of the most celebrated classical works of the last century in a truly spellbinding setting (P.17).

Associate Artist Programme Our Associate Artist programme draws on a diverse pool of extraordinary artists in the season to work with our campus and community in a range of different ways. From student and community engagement to commissioning and co-producing, this ground breaking initiative showcases the connections between our artistic programme and the University though a number of bold, new projects.
1927 Founded in 2005 by Director, Writer & Performer Suzanne Andrade and Animator & Illustrator Paul Barritt, 1927 is a multi-award winning company based in Margate & London that specialises in combining performance and live music with animation to create magical filmic productions. Their work is startlingly original and generates an incredible atmosphere. To watch a 1927 show is to get lost in a rich, bizarre, funny world conjured through stylised performances, animation, live music and song.

Julia Cheng
BAC Beatbox Academy
Julia Cheng founded House of Absolute in 2014. She is a creative director, choreographer and dance artist whose work has been presented internationally.
The Battersea Arts Centre Beatbox Academy is where young people aged 12–21 can learn to beatbox, jam with other young musicians, make their own music and perform in their own show.
Her critically acclaimed choreography on Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club was the winner of 2022 Stage Debut Awards, and was also nominated for the 2022 Olivier Award (Best Theatre Choreography). Julia will be presenting new work as part of our 2024/25 season.
Conrad Murray has led the BAC Beatbox Academy since 2008. He has developed a musical and theatrical devising practice to create new forms of performance and theatre, creating different theatre productions over the years, including the 5 star-rated (Observer, The Stage) Frankenstien (Gulbenkian 2021). Pied Piper, our smash-hit 2023 alternative Christmas show, was co-commissioned by Gulbenkian Arts Centre. The Beatbox Academy will be back soon!
Formed in Cesena in 1981 by Claudia and Romeo Castellucci, Chiara and Paolo Guidi (who was part of it until 1996), the company evolved a completely unique approach to performance, developing a distinct visual language applied to work of scale and ambition.
Societas & Dewey Dell Societas, formerly Societas Raffaello Sanzio, is one of the most celebrated, acclaimed and significant contemporary theatre companies in Europe, arguably the world.
Since 2006 the three founder artists have developed, under the name of Societas, three distinct paths, as well as working closely with Dewey Dell, founded by three children of Chiara and Romeo: Agata, Demetrio and Teodora Castellucci. For the first time outside Italy, and exclusive to the Arts Centre, the artists who make up Societas and the Castellucci family will together be the Gulbenkian’s first international Associate Artists. Rarely seen in the United Kingdom, over the course of the next few seasons we will present work from all of the artists and creative voices.

Matthew Herbert is one of the most important British artists of his generation. From the upper echelons of cinematic scoring and avant-garde composition to iconic, leftfield dance floor tracks and remixes, his accomplishments in music and sound are monolithic.
Matthew is working on an exciting and ambitious plan with us for Autumn 2024; look out for further announcements!

Improbable
AФE is a state of the art future technology arts collective founded in 2013 by Aoi Nakamura and Esteban Fourmi, with the vision to bring the art of dance and the possibilities of technology closer to audiences. Their mission is to create high-quality productions that are not bound by a stage, working with technology to create new and incredible experiences for audience.
Improbable are pioneering improvisers, theatre makers, conversation facilitators and winners of Producer of the Year in The Stage Awards 2023.
Since 2021, Aoi & Esteban have been the iCCi/Gulbenkian Arts Centre’s Digital Artists in Residence, working closely with our team on the development of our digital arts programming, and developing a digital studio on our Chatham Dockyard site.
Over the past 25 years, they have staged epic outdoor spectacles like Sticky (which was seen by over 250,000 people); theatrical classics like The Tempest at Northern Stage and the Oxford Playhouse; intimate puppetry like Animo in studios across the country; adaptations like Theatre of Blood at the National Theatre; operatic triumphs like Satyagraha and Akhnaten at the English National Opera in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York; female-led impro project Permission Improbable and most recently the multi-award-winning, record breaking My Neighbour Totoro at the Barbican in London. In 2023/24 they come to Gulbenkian with Day=Night (P.8), an evening of improvised music and storytelling.

Matthew Herbert and The Radiophonic Institute
Matthew founded and leads The Radiophonic Institute, an organisation born from the profound legacy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop that ‘creates, connects and champions innovation in sound and music’. The Institute aims to inspire and enable a new generation of diverse creative practitioners to collaborate, and to challenge the pre-existing conventions of music making and sound design.

Each night the band will improvise a unique score, joined by special guests. A jazz tune sung by Josie Lawrence inspired by a local architect? A cello sonata inspired by chat between a chef and a designer? Ruth Bratt sings an operatic aria, inspired by a master carpenter? Part-gig, part-show this is a night for the musically curious brought to you by award-winning theatre company Improbable (My Neighbour Totoro, Lifegame, Satyagraha) and the team behind the hit production An Improbable Musical.

Presented by Gulbenkian Young Company, Wind/Rush Generation(s) is a play about the British Isles, its past and its present. However, if you think you know about British history, Empire, slavery, economics, racism and humanity, then this play might get you to think again.

Set in a university common room, a group of students are troubled by a noisy ghost. So they do what any self-respecting and intelligent students would do in such a situation – they get out the Ouija Board to try and lay them to rest.

Soft Machine One of the greatest UK avant/jazz-rock bands of all time and a key part of the Canterbury Sound, Soft Machine were contemporaries of, and shared stages with, Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Whilst the line-up of Soft Machine may have changed many times since the heady days of the late 1960’s, the band’s spirit of musical adventure, and the ease with which it freely avoids being pigeon holed and can move from powerful progressive jazz fusion to atmospheric psychedelia to free improvised jazz-rock to ambient loop music continues to make it both unique and totally contemporary.

Nouvelle Vague With support from Dead Chic The legendary French musical collective who took the world by storm with their innovative and sophisticated cover versions of punk and new wave classics, from The Clash to The Undertones, and the Sex Pistols to The Dead Kennedys - but not as they’d ever been heard before! Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave. This was the starting point for Marc Collin and the late Olivier Libaux’s unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk canon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the covers genre to huge acclaim.
The group’s first two albums, Nouvelle Vague (2004) and Bande A Part (2006) defined their unique sound, were phenomenally successful, and the band have performed to rapturous audiences worldwide ever since. Now join them for a joyous, unmissable celebration of their seminal first album alongside the launch of their next classic LP.

Gavin Bryars Ensemble / Live in Canterbury Cathedral
Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet Experience Gavin Bryars’ seminal minimalist orchestral work performed in the atmospheric surroundings of the Cathedral. The Flower of Friendship The Sinking of the Titanic Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet First released in 1975, the piece features a looped recording of a homeless man singing a religious song, which Bryars discovered on the streets of London. The recording is accompanied by a live orchestra playing a simple melody, which gradually builds in intensity and complexity to a moving crescendo. Haunting, powerful and deeply moving, Jesus’ Blood has been performed across the world and is widely regarded as a landmark work of Twentieth Century classical music. A celebration of Gavin Bryars’ 80th birthday, presented in association with Canterbury Cathedral.

YolanDa Brown Award Winning Saxophonist YolanDa Brown brings her delicious fusion of reggae, jazz and soul. She was awarded an OBE in the 2023 New Year Honours List by the King. Whitstable-based Coastal Electronauts bring you an evening of electronic music, tone clusters and live visuals for the annual celebration of community and experimental sounds through DRONE. There will be live performances from Japanese composer and singer Mieko Shimizu, French multiinstrumentalist and electronic musician Thierry Holwick, electronocist and Pere Ubu percussionist Graham Dowdall aka Gagarin, ambient electro-acoustic artist Shape Navigator, experimental east/west coast synthesist AnalogueMechanic, tone explorer OSVoS and Hardware Jams electronic musician Sebtic Smile. Live interactive visuals will be provided by analogue/digital video artist diz_qo International Drone Day was originally conceived by Marie LeBlanc Flanagan of Weird Canada in 2014, the aim being to create a communal noise - a DRONE - that resonates around the whole planet. DRONE DAY events will be happening all around the world, celebrating an exploration of sustained sound rooted in ancient traditions, contemporary electronics and the hum of the universe.

Winter at the Gulbenkian wouldn’t be right without a visit from legendary folk rock band Fairport Convention. 2024 will see Fairport Convention celebrate 57 years in business, and whilst the band has seen many changes in that time, one thing has remained the same – Fairport’s passion for performance. Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman
Bonded by an unseen alchemy, Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have entwined their professional and personal relationship into an enviable class act of imaginative songwriting and musicianship. ‘Almost A Sunset ‘, their seventh album, is a collection of thoughtful, varied songs that range from re-worked traditional ballads to the off-piste storytelling style that has become their trademark. Moya Brennan
Ranagri
Moya Brennan’s voice continues to provide a constant reminder of how the heart can be touched by the purity and thrill of music. As the First Lady of Celtic Music, Moya is a constant and enthusiastic ambassador for Irish culture around the world and, a native Irish Gaeilge language speaker, keen to keep her traditional arts and music in the forefront. Based in the award-winning Colyer-Fergusson Building on the Canterbury campus, our Extra-Curricular Music Department presents a vibrant programme of music-making, open to all students and staff at the University, and to the local community, throughout the academic year. From orchestral works to big band swing, choral concerts, Musical Theatre, chamber opera and more, from our outstanding concert-hall to Canterbury Cathedral and Deal Memorial Bandstand, there are plenty of opportunities to rehearse and perform, whatever you study. Music Performance Scholarships are also open to talented instrumentalists and singers, offering a cash bursary and the opportunity to continue with instrumental or singing lessons, as part of being involved in University musical life. Practice-rooms are available for use throughout the year, including a dedicated band-room for amplified instruments. String!
A celebration of the string quartet featuring the Gildas Quartet. This informal performance includes a diverse programme from Haydn to Jessie Montgomery; Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges to Dvorak and everything in between. Creatively staged to bring the audience into the music this fun concert is guaranteed to open eyes and ears to the fabulous, joyful world of the String Quartet. Zest Theatre
Camp Phoenix Zia turned 17 last week. When they arrive at Camp Phoenix for a compulsory weeklong residential, they aren’t sure if it’s for them. The camp helps young people emerge from the dust of their younger selves, just like a phoenix. Through regulated activities, young people develop the skills to rise into the next phase of their lives to become great citizens and employees. But not everything goes to plan... What advice do teenagers wish they’d had when they were still kids? Camp Phoenix has been developed through conversations with 600 young people nationwide to find out. 9-year-olds shared their worries, and those aged 16+ responded with expert wisdom. Camp Phoenix shares that wisdom with honesty, hope, and humour. Little Bulb
Four Seasons Four Seasons is a theatrical love letter to nature for children and their families. Join our intrepid team of magical gardeners as they tend to the marvellous menagerie of flora and fauna at every stage of nature’s miraculous journey. Four Seasons is a celebration of the wonder and weirdness of nature and our place within it, all set to an exciting score of seasonally inspired tracks including, of course, Vivaldi’s iconic piece. Expect enchanting and innovative theatre featuring puppetry, dance and clowning fun – everything we’ve come to expect from Olivier Award-winning Little Bulb (Hibernation, CBEEBIES’ The Nutcracker).

The Singing Mermaid This classic story by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks, is a perfect piece of theatre for 3 to 8 year-olds and their families. The singing mermaid is tempted away to join a travelling circus, with the promise of a life of excitement (and her own swimming pool!). The audiences love her singing but we soon find out she’s been tricked by the dastardly circus master.

There’s a Monster in Your Show Based on the bestselling Who’s In Your Book? children’s series by Tom Fletcher (lead singer of Brit-awardwinning band McFly). South by South East South by South East is a window into the wealth of performing arts creativity in Kent & Essex, including dance, drama, music, comedy and cabaret. This fourth iteration of the festival provides a showcase for new and exciting work by up-and-coming and established artists based in the region. GENFest 2024 GENFest is a free festival curated by and for 13-25 year olds, celebrating young people’s creativity and giving a platform to young creative voices in Kent. The programme showcases up-and-coming local creatives and will feature a mix of live theatre, dance, music and stand-up comedy, plus short film screenings and an art exhibition. There will also be a whole host of free artist-led workshops as well as networking sessions where young creatives and professionals can connect. ART31 is a vision created with, by, and for young people aged 13-25 in Kent. We believe that amazing arts and culture is a human right and want to make sure every young person gets the chance to get involved. ART31 empowers young people to achieve their creative potential and makes young people equal partners in any decision making that affects them. Gulbenkian Arts Centre is home to ART31, where we run various youth projects. We also work closely with partners who deliver activity across Kent. ART31 is funded by Arts Council England and Kent County Council.

The Canterbury Players present Agatha Christie’s classic whodunnit, The Hollow. It is autumn 1946, and the Angkatell family and their guests gather at their home-county country estate, The Hollow, for a weekend together. As the weekend begins, cracks between the guests start to show. Within 24 hours, one of their number will be murdered.
Described as “a breath of fresh air on the swing scene”, Down for the Count are regularly found in jazz clubs across the UK and abroad (Ronnie Scott’s London, Le Caveau de la Huchette Paris), at festivals including London Jazz Festival, and on BBC Radio. Now they are bringing the sounds and feels of the best jazz clubs to Canterbury – with an electrifying show full of incredible energy, musicianship, and their own signature wry wit and humour.

G2 Definitive Genesis
From Georgian London to modern-day Ukraine, the Canterbury Orchestra perform a quartet of pieces that celebrate landscapes, portray places, and pray for peace. Brahms’s Second Symphony is paired with Howard Skempton’s Sirens. Kaminsky’s Te Deum, which symbolises the passing of time in wartime Ukraine, is followed by Haydn’s Symphony no. 101: ‘The Clock’.
G2 are currently celebrating their 23rd year of playing classic 1970s Genesis. G2 pay tribute to a vintage period in Genesis’ long and colourful history, the four-man “Seconds Out” era, and earlier Gabriel years. With a repertoire extending from the 1970 Trespass album to 1980’s Duke, G2 faithfully recreate some of the finest progressive rock ever written.
