I’ve always appreciated my mother for the sacrifices that she’s made for me, but it wasn’t until I became a mother myself that I understood why and how she was able to give up so much for my happiness. My mother is the best example I could have ever wished for, for teaching me how to be a TRUE mother to my daughter. I LOVE YOU MOMMY! Top 5 Songs Dedicated to Super Moms
#5 “I Wish You Were Here” (Jamie Foxx) As everybody knows Jamie Foxx is my husband (in my mind) so I basically study his music (lol). In his second album Unpredictable, Jamie dedicates this song to his late grandmother. The heart-filled lyrics really embrace missing a loved one and wishing they were there again.
#4 “Baby Mama” (Fantasia) With Fantasia’s debut album Free Yourself I instantly took a liking to the song “Baby Mama.” I loved how she was honoring the word “Baby Mama” and making it positive. But it wasn’t until I had my daughter that I could value every word in that song as a single mother. I saw Fantasia sing this live on Mother’s Day 2009 and it brought tears to my eyes.
#3 “To Zion” (Lauryn Hill) In Lauryn Hill’s “To Zion” she’s singing to her unborn son. I remember when I was pregnant with my daughter, I could truly relate to the bond she was singing about. I think this song captures the emotion of how much love a mother can have for her unborn child.
#2 “Dear Mama” (TuPac) I stand behind this statement: “TUPAC IS THE GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME!” I love me some TuPac for his lyrics alone. In his hit song “Dear Mama”, TuPac talked about the struggles his mother went through as a poor, single mother. He gets extremely deep and you can really feel the love appreciation he has for his mom.

I know it’s technically for mothers but I think the movie “Soul Food” sticks out not to mention all of the grandchildren (in my family) sang this at my great grandmother’s funeral. Brotha Insight: What has been the hardest thing you have had to endure since you始ve been homeless? Te-Erika: The toughest thing I have had to endure is the lack of privacy of living in a shelter and not having anywhere to go to relax. Everyone needs an opportunity to unwind and I do not get that at all. Another thing that really gets to me is the complaining and lack of motivation of those around me. I have to hear everyone complain about everything all the time and most people here are very angry about life, which affects my spirit because I try to live life with gratitude. Brotha Insight: What do you want young women to take from your experience when they watch the documentary? Te-Erika: I want women to understand that they are going to face life transitions many times in life. Some of those transitions will cause them to have to start over and rebuild and they can do it, if they choose to.. Brotha Insight: How has the treatment toward you been from the homeless community?
Thanks to iCandi Writer Lashanna Dipiano, I was informed about a project that Ms. Te-Erika Patterson is currently working on where she始s living as a homeless woman. Check out the interview y始all. This is Deep (MsiCandi)
Brotha Insight: What made you want to start the Rebuild Your Life Project? Te-Erika: After having a traumatic experience complete with panic attacks and plenty of heartache, I realized that completing graduate school (where I was just 1000 hours away from graduating) wasn't the right path for me. I withdrew from graduate school and I knew I would not go back. The next week I published my first paperback book, It's Not A Sin To Be Single, and by the next day I created MySavvySisters.Com, an empowerment website for women. I began to feel good about life again and the panic attacks were diminishing. As my income dwindled, I would have nightmares about becoming homeless and I knew that losing everything and becoming homeless on the side of the street was my biggest fear. It held me captive. One morning I woke up and my intuition told me to face my fear and to become homeless on purpose to teach women to overcome their fear of failure. Many women stay in abusive or spiritually debilitating situations because they are afraid of losing everything and falling on their face. My desire is to show them that losing everything doesn't have to mean failing permanently. I planned to teach the lesson of overcoming as I overcame in my own life through my website and my YouTube channel. I wrestled with this idea for three days, but after some thought it made perfect sense in my own mind and I began to prepare to follow my inner voice. Ever since then, I have not had a single anxiety attack. Brotha Insight: What made you want to sell all your things and live homeless? Te-Erika: In order to show what it's like to completely start over, I had to give away all of my things. I didn't sell anything, everything was given to charity. Brotha Insight: Have you had any businesses offer assistance since you have been on the journey? If so, which ones, if you don't mind sharing? Te-Erika: The Homeless Voice Homeless shelter has partnered with me in this endeavor as well as the National Coalition to End Homelessness. They have assisted me financially with securing the venue for the Rebuild Your Life job fair and offered their name to my project to legitimize it.

Te-Erika: Homeless women that I meet on the street see me coming with my camera and they do not want to speak to me. Women in the shelter are more open to talking to me and grateful for my project but most do not want to be on camera or have their pictures taken because they are embarrassed. The men here tell me I'm pretty every day and most cater to me. My first day here a man yelled at me and said I was mocking the homeless with my project and that he didn't trust me. Brotha Insight: I know you始re waiting on a certain number of businesses to show support. If you don't get the amount your looking for, do you have a cut off time to stop the homeless process? Te-Erika: The job fair is scheduled for May 9th. If for some reason I do not have thirty businesses by that time I will continue with the job fair and after the job fair, my project will be over. I did not expect that it would take me this long to get thirty businesses to participate and I definitely didn't think that I would be living homeless for a month, which is the date of the job fair. I do not know how I will be able to get off the streets after the job fair. I have no money saved up and nowhere to go at that time. I am marketing myself as a journalist to most newspapers and magazines that I can find in order to find employment but none have responded to me as of yet.

Kelly Price has always been regarded as an awesome vocalist; however, most fans can remember her dismal foray into the gospel realm with her last album, Healing. People were anxiously awaiting the powerhouse to return to where she works best, in R&B, and here it is. The first single, "Tired", has Kelly shouting about how tired she is of, well, everything. Other standouts include "Not My Daddy" featuring Stokely of Mint Condition, the heartfelt "Get Right or Get Left", and the simple "I'm Sorry". As long as Kelly sticks to the ballads, she has nothing to apologize for.

Noel Gourdin - Fresh (The Definition) Entertainment One Music, 2011
Many people slept of Noel Gourdin's last effort, the awesome After My Time, and because of such, they missed out on a wellcrafted album. Here, they have another chance to really get into the music. The single "Beautiful" is enjoying its own separate success, but the rest of the album is just as great, if not better. "Been A Long Time" is an awesome ballad, as is the well-written and well-sung "No Regrets", and the uptempo cuts like "Puppet" and "Assurance Policy" will have you head-bopping like you're watching a live concert from him.

Rhian Benson - Hands Clean Icarus Records, 2011
Her debut CD Gold Coast was not too bad by itself, but it was VERY slept on. Here, Rhian takes a familiar approach and cranks out a pretty good album. The spoken-word feel of "1" definitely deserves a couple spins, as does the groove of "This Feels Like Home". The simplicity of "Can't Sleep, Won't Sleep" brings to mind a delightful lullaby, and her remake of Terrence Trent D'arby's "Sign Your Name" is nothing short of awesome. Her voice may draw comparisons to Alicia Keys on some songs and Vanessa Williams on others, but here she stands alone.

**Throwback CDs you probably don't have (but SHOULD)**
Shanachie Records, 2011 112 (112) The CD that introduced us to the svelte gentlemen crooners can still be played today with its awesome ballads and bass-heavy club jams.
Anyone who TRULY loves R&B music knows that Mint Condition NEVER disappoints, and here, they continue that trend. The band keeps it simple and gives us REAL R&B that's meant for us to hear and know. Although it's been a while since their overslept E-Life CD, they stick to the format that has worked before and will work again with real lovers of R&B music. Standout ballads include the pensive "Walk On", the naive "Can't Get Away", and the maternal tribute "Unsung", while the funky "I Want It" stays true to the funkiness of the band that we all love, and "20 Years Later" (a nod to their longevity) deserves a Grammy all by itself. Awesome CD.

Bucks with BUX “Finding the Deals on GAS” You know me; I’m always out to pinch a penny. In this economy, I can’t stress enough how important it is to save money. This month as gas prices are rising and coming to a “passing out high”, I’m here to tell you what to do to save on gas. First, I live by this: If I don’t have to go I will limit my trips. But, that is a little easier than done. Second take advantage of the gas stations and grocery store promos. Kroger/ Walmart (with their gas station), Shell, Remke, Biggs, and Speedway. By going to the store you are receiving points to get money off your gas, which is a match made in money heaven. Third, see if you car is able to have the E-85 fuel (ethanol fuel), which is cheaper than regular unleaded gasoline. You can check by year, make, and model at e85vehicles.com. It will also list the stations in your area, if applicable. Finally, most smartphones have the ability to look up apps. An app called “gasbuddy” searches for all the gas stations in your area and breaks down the prices. So, before you waste gas driving around looking for “cheap gas”, check the gasbuddy app out.

"To Our Mothers" By Brotha Insight
Mothers have been celebrated throughout time, even with recorded events in Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. The origins of a specific Mother's Day go all the way back to the 16th Century with the practice of visiting one's “mother church” once a year. On that day, in the Dark Ages, Mothers would be reunited with their children at church. In the United States, a mother and social activist named Julia Ward Howe worked to create a Mother's Day for peace during the Civil War in an attempt to organize mothers against war. It wasnʼt until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day. This was done to honor mothers whose sons had died in the war. Since then, Mother's Day has gone on to become the most popular day of the year to dine out in restaurants, to make long distance phone calls, and go to shopping malls. May is the biggest month for florists, because Mother's Day is celebrated around the world. Though the actual date changes depending on the country in which it's observed, it is a major holiday. Looking at my findings, I've witnessed how people around the world discuss Mother's Day. People are out rushing around to make sure they have the perfect gift. Itʼs in some ways refreshing to see this behavior, especially in our own Black communities.
Let’s celebrate our Black Queens everyday The Mother is the Queen and should be placed on the pedestal due to providing the seeds of our future. The one thing that is mind boggling for me, and really is an oxymoron, is that we as a community treat our Black women like they are less than respectable. We view them as tools, trophies, baby mamas, and show a lack of respect for them in music videos and lyrics. Yet, on Motherʼs Day, we honor our mothers; itʼs a time when men say "I love you" to their mothers and take them out and really brag on their moms, but they treat someone elseʼs mom in a demeaning way. Isnʼt that strange? Doesnʼt that make you think? Society has totally taken control over our minds, and we have been programmed so much that we will stop one day during the year and celebrate our moms, and recognize your baby mamas because society says itʼs “Mother's Day”. Maybe we need to have “Get A Job Day”, or “Treat Women With Respect Day”. It seems whatever is hyped up in the media gets us going. I think Motherʼs Day is a great thing to have, but we need to have that mentality year round for our women. I challenge every mother to do something to better themselves on Motherʼs Day. Read an inspiring book, or do some volunteer work in your community. Motherʼs Day should be a day to unite and ensure all mothers have what they need to provide the proper mental and physical tools for our community. We need to change our perception and not let society tell us when to do it. Letʼs celebrate our Black Queens every day. At the end of the day, we all got here by way of a woman, and we should never forget that and always show love and respect to our Queens. So, I would like to say to all our mothers, young and old, that I pledge to honor and respect you each day of my life. You all will be treated like itʼs Motherʼs Day each day, and I challenge all other males to treat them the same way. Happy Motherʼs Day to all the mothers from ya man “Brotha Insight”. So I would like to pass on the love and dedicate this to all the Treasured Pearls out there. Your day is coming...... ~MsiCandi~ Treasured Pearls While walking home from work I noticed you sitting there on the bench Saying to my self what an attractive lady you where As I pass by you look up and our eye's meet I could see the hurt in them such pretty eye's Yet so full of pain I stop and stare deeper into them even though they are full of hurt I can still see a sparkle in them The more I look , the more I can see that sweet caring soul you have wanting to come out To be shared with and by someone Wondering to myself who could have thrown such a beautiful and precious gem away Not having the time or patience to support and bring out all of her gifts. So quick to destroy and toss her away like an old shoe As if she where all worn out and used up Not even knowing, that they hadn't even begun to tap into your gifts Your Kind Heart Your Giving Soul Your Maternal spirit Your Faithfulness But most of all your desire to give and receive never ending Eternal love Your willingness to sacrifice all that you are for their happiness Only hoping to receive the same. I pity the fool that tried to destroy you and break your spirit The one that discarded you like yesterdays trash The one that made you feel as though You where NOTHING And He was all THAT! I pity the man who didn't want to know the treasure you truly are The one who treated you like… Threw you away like…. Dismissed you like… You were trash!! Well one mans TRASH is another mans TREASURE !! So I … Thank you For not wanting to know her HEART For not wanting to receive her GIVING SOUL Her Faithfulness and MATERNIAL SPIRIT I thank you for setting her free so that I may receive all of her blessings I'm going to be the man you didn't want to be I'm going to cherish her as God's angel I'm going to set her spirit free To fly and achieve all her goals and dreams I'm going to love her like no one ever has As God would have me to do That little sparkle of light I see in her eye's I won't let it go out You see this was not trash that you threw away It was a treasured pearl yes a treasured pearl.. One that a king of any kingdom would love to have But you have damaged her and her shell is closing With a little sparkle of light left I have my tools to reopen her I will have the PATIENCE for her you didn't have I will WORK and STAND BY her until her shell is completely gone And at THAT moment… I will love, cherish, and polish…. That beautiful pearl she was holding inside for me! So Thank You... For My..... " TREASURED PEARL "

NUTRITIOUS & DELICIOUS iCanCook Curry Lentil Soup by www.nattral.com
Ingredients: 1 cups of washed red lentils 1 cup peeled and cubed potatoes 1 cup cubed carrots 1 ½ cup of onion chopped 4 cloves of garlic chopped 2 inch piece of ginger 6 cups of water 1 cup coconut milk 1 cup of canned diced tomatoes One 1" piece of kelp Spices 1 tsp thyme 1 tbsp granulated garlic 1 tbsp granulated onion 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp curry powder 1 tsp sea salt Pinch of cayenne (Garnish with lime) Directions: Saute onions, garlic, ginger and carrots until soft (4 minutes). Add spices and saute for 30 sec. add remaining ingredients (except kelp) and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, add kelp, cover and cook for 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 1 cup of water if needed. Remove the kelp if you choose, but not necessary. Lentils should be soft. Serve and garnish with lime. Yields 6-8 servings Enjoy!
