Publisher’s LETTER

Living a full & healthy life... ...amidst changing seasons.

We have always lived in a transitional world. However, lately it appears we are experiencing more than our fair share of change. We are becoming more globally connected as technology and education “flattens” our world. Social and economic policies in the United States are re-shaping the landscape of healthcare, education and our economy. Southern Utah, like many parts of the country, has gone through its ups and downs of job loss, housing booms, housing slumps, and chaotic growth curves. Some of you may feel like you are on a roller-coaster in many areas of your life. We live in busy times with much to do and much to think about. Life comes with many seasons both personally, as a community and as a society.

With all that is moving, what can we do to make the most of our lives? How can we find happiness during uncertainty or peace during pain? How can we appreciate the season we are in while preparing for the changing seasons of tomorrow? I would like to offer you 5 areas to consider as you learn from yesterday, enjoy today and plan for tomorrow.

1 | Take control of what is “controllable” and let the rest go.

Someone once gave me a definition of anxiety or stress as “not knowing the difference between what we can control and what we can’t.” This obviously is easier said than done. However, I personally have found more peace when I let go of the “uncontrollable.”

Areas of my life that I don’t have control over include my past mistakes, the past in general, certain struggles that come just because life happens and how people react to my best efforts. In the end, it is not worth worrying over areas that we can’t do much about. I try to place my stressors into one of three boxes in my mind: 1) Areas I have no control over (usually 90% of all worries); 2) Areas I have control over, but not now (9%, I schedule a time to worry about these later); and 3) Areas I have control over now (the last 1%).

2 | Take advantage of a preventative, personally accountable healthcare system.

Whether or not each of us agrees with the recent changes in healthcare and the directions our healthcare system is going, one thing is clear: our health is more our personal responsibility than any other time in the modern healthcare system. In other words, because of rising healthcare costs, reduced services coverage and more freedom to choose how you spend your healthcare dollars, we have a lot more interest and say on how to take care of ourselves and our families. The most sure thing we have at this point is that we can prevent much of what is to come with healthy living and we can wisely spend our healthcare money on areas outside of traditional reactionary medicine. We have a chance to invest time and money into fitness, nutrition, emotional health, mental health and physical health in a way that can bring us much more life enjoyment and peace of mind. Take advantage of it!

3 | Wellness is more about a lifestyle rather than a “quick fix.”

We all know there are few quick fixes in life. Wellness goes beyond a quick diet or pill. Wellness considers our whole body and our whole life. Nutrition, fitness, spirituality, hobbies, passions, career, family, relationships, physical health, mental health, emotional well-being and many more areas are all connected. Changes in one area impact the other areas. In the end, we each need to find our place in life.

A life that makes sense to us and that can be lived realistically and with integrity. Hopefully, we can find a place of wellness that allows us to be our best selves in all areas that matter most.

4 | Find your passions and live them often.

When I was younger, I was always looking forward to the future because I thought I would be happier then. Life would be better after high school, college, more money, kids, empty nest and the list goes on and on. I have discovered that many of life’s greatest gifts are lived each day as we enjoy our simple passions. This may include reading a book, stopping to watch a sunset, spending time with a son or daughter, making a phone call to someone out of the blue or stopping to help someone in need. We also find more life enjoyment in tapping into our natural gifts and talents. Some may enjoy the arts, music, mechanics, woodworking or gardening. May we all find our daily passions and live more simply by living them more often.

5 | Focus on what is most important in your life.

We all will pass from this life someday. I have had the opportunity to work with many people as they get close to moving on from this world. Most common topics of discussion? Family, friends, love, beauty, and God. Some speak with contentment and others with regret. Very few speak of jobs, salary, cars, corporate meetings, petty arguments or the latest trend. In the end, we think about what is most important in life. May we all spend a little less time on those things that will fade and a little more time and those things that make us who we are.

CPR INSTRUCTIONS • CPR should start as soon as possible.

• Attempt to wake victim. If the victim is not breathing (or is just gasping for breath), call 911 immediately and go to the next step. If someone else is there to help, one of you call 911 while the other moves on to the next step.

• Begin chest compressions. If the victim is not breathing, place the heel of your hand in the middle of his chest. Put your other hand on top of the first with your fingers interlaced. Compress the chest at least 2 inches (4-5 cm). Allow the chest to completely recoil before the next compression. Compress the chest at a rate of at least 100 pushes per minute.

Perform 30 compressions at this rate (should take you about 18 seconds).

• If you are not trained in CPR, continue to do chest compressions until help arrives or the victim wakes up.

• It’s normal to feel pops and snaps when you first begin chest compressions - DON’T STOP! You’re not going to make the victim worse.

• Begin rescue breathing. If you have been trained in CPR, after 30 compressions, open the victim’s airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift method. Pinch the victim’s nose and make a seal over the victim’s mouth with yours. Use a CPR mask if available. Give the victim a breath big enough to make the chest rise.

Let the chest fall, then repeat the rescue breath once more. If the chest doesn’t rise on the first breath, reposition the head and try again. Whether it works on the second try or not, go to next step.

• Repeat chest compressions. Do 30 more chest compressions just like you did the first time.

• Repeat rescue breaths. Give 2 more breaths.

• Keep going. Repeat about 5 cycles of 30 compressions and 2 rescue breaths for about two minutes.

• If you have access to an automated external defibrillator (AED), continue to do CPR until you can attach it to the victim and turn it on. If you saw the victim collapse, put the AED on right away. If not, attach it after approximately one minute of CPR (chest compressions and rescue breaths).

• After 2 minutes of chest compressions and rescue breaths, stop compressions and recheck victim for breathing. If the victim is still not breathing, continue CPR starting with chest compressions.

• Repeat the process, checking for breathing every 2 minutes (5 cycles or so), until help arrives. If the victim wakes up, you can stop CPR.

Changing bed-time routines may be the answer

1. Going to bed at the same time every night, as well as waking up at the same time is important in establishing a healthy routine.

2. Naps may be blissful but if taken too late, may hinder quality of sleep at night.

3. Unwinding before bed can definitely help slow the brain down and get you ready for bed. Meditating or listening to soft music are good examples.

4. Checking the clock is not helping. Calculating how much sleep you are missing may actually make you anxious and thus make you miss out on the essential slumber.

Dr. Gardner specializes in coronary interventions, peripheral interventions and structural heart disease. He runs a peripheral vascular clinic that includes full peripheral vascular non-invasive studies (ABIs), as well as a structural heart clinic.

Derek Frieden, M.D. completed his fellowship training in interventional pain management at Harvard Medical Center.

After graduating from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Jon Obray completed fellowship training in interventional pain medicine at Mayo Clinic. Following this influential training, he served Mayo Medical Center as the Medical Director of the pain clinic.

After completing a spine and musculoskeletal fellowship at Johns Hopkins, Rick Obray, M.D. then completed an interventional pain fellowship at Mayo Clinic, making him one of the few physicians in the country to complete fellowship training in both pain medicine and diagnostic imaging.

Dr. Hunt graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-professional Biology.

Dr. Fife graduated from optometry school in 2001. He is past president of Red Rock Rotary, a local organization focused on helping children.

Dr. Hunt is board-certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease. Since 1999, he has diagnosed and managed patients with diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, and sleep apnea. After studying chemistry and biology at Weber State University, Dr. Erickson attended Indiana University School of Dentistry, earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree. He earned several research awards, presenting his research at international and national meetings, and several awards for his work with children, and his involvement with research, and fellow students.

Dr. Simonsen graduated from Dixie College in 1972, completing his undergraduate studies at Utah State University. He graduated from dental school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in the top 10 percent of his class. Dr. Simonsen later graduated from Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY, specializing in orthodontics.

Kevin earned his Exercise Science degree with a business minor from Brigham Young University.

Following dental school, Dr. Erickson served as “Lieutenant Erickson,� a Naval Dental Officer. He moved to Okinawa, Japan to treat Marines, Sailors, and their families for two years. He also served with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, aboard the USS Essex, and trained at the Jungle Warfare Training Center. He then served at Naval Dental Center San Diego, preparing sailors for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. During his Navy service, Dr. Erickson received several awards and commendations.

Dr. Simonsen specializes in preventive orthodontics and early treatment (before a patient has all permanent teeth). He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists.

Now in his 40th year of marriage, Dr. Simonsen has seven children and 12 grandchildren. He enjoys his ranch in northern Utah and being active in local church and community projects. He has been an orthodontist in St. George for over 30 years with offices located in downtown St. George and Hurricane.

Karey has been a massage therapist for 8 years. Her specialty is orthopedic massage, a therapeutic modality that is deep, but gentle in nature.
