s ghw | fWr Eo LmL th N EeS eS d i to r Isn’t everyone, at one point or another in their lives, an emotional wreck? As we head into this upcoming summer season, I find myself in that state of mind. It seems that time is flying faster and faster. I get anxious for the kids to be out of school and ready to enjoy some summer fun, but at the same time - didn’t the school year just begin?!

I can’t keep up – and I know I am not alone.

There is one thing that everyone in this entire world has in common: we all have exactly 24 hours in a day.

What do we do with those 24 hours? Do we spend them on frivolous things? Do we try to find ways to extend those 24 hours? Do we just enjoy being alive and having those 24 hours?

These questions are answered differently by every single person. We are not all the same; we do not spend our 24 hours the same. We do not live our lives the same way. So, why is it that people are always comparing themselves to others? I have been contemplating that very thing, wondering if that mentality is adding to my emotional chaos.

I remind myself that I live a different life than my neighbors, my co-workers, and my friends. I still only have 24 hours in a day, but in my 24 hours I have to be comfortable with the things that I, personally, can accomplish. I don’t need to “keep up” with the Joneses, I don’t need to feel guilty if we have cold cereal for dinner (3 times this week). I don’t need to overwork myself to make everyone else happy and neglect my family, or myself. I simply need to focus on what is important to me, what gives me fulfillment and what I choose to fit into my 24 hours. I hope you, too, can create balance and acceptance in your twenty-four.

I hope that, more and more, we will enjoy the many outdoor activities that St. George and Washington County have to offer! It’s one of the reasons many of us choose to live here. It’s also one of the many reasons others choose to visit St. George.

On April 5th I enjoyed leading a large group of people on a short bike ride from Confluence Trailhead near the Dixie Center to the Thunder Junction All Abilities Park, on to Cottonwood Cove Park, and back to the Confluence Trailhead. This group included mayors, city council members, and their families who were in St. George for the Utah League of Cities and Towns annual spring conference. It was so fun to show them just a little bit about our parks and trails. It was also enjoyable to see some who hadn’t ridden a bike in years come and experience it again, and to have them ask for suggestions about how to create something like what we have in their cities or towns.

While a few of our trails have been closed recently to make repairs and due to I-15 bridge construction between exits 4 and 5, I hope during this beautiful time of year many of us will spend time on our paved and unpaved trails.

May is Bike Month in St. George, and we plan to make a big deal of it!

1. On May 8th at 6:00 PM we’ll do another one of our “Bike with Pike” events at the Confluence Trailhead. It’ll be fun, good exercise, and we’ll have food for the whole family as well!

2. May 10th is Bike to School Day. This year we’ll bike with Sunset Elementary School students and Principal Horrocks.

3. May 12th will be the Bike Film Festival where we’ll show bike film shorts and provide giveaways for those in attendance. Watch for details about location and time on Facebook and at sgcity.org.

4. May 15th-19th is Bike to Work Week. I plan to ride my bike to work every day that week and challenge others to do the same – or as many days as they can!

Whether you can participate in any of these events or not, I hope everyone will do something to get out and enjoy our trails and the beautiful St. George spring weather.

Bring a family member or a friend and it’ll be even more fun!

The Dixie State University campus is abuzz with excitement this summer, thanks in large part to the Utah State Legislature’s recent demonstration of commitment to the university. During the 2017 session, legislators appropriated funds for Dixie State University’s new Human Performance Center and authorized the state to issue revenue bonds for the Legend Solar Stadium expansion. It is no exaggeration to say that the entire Dixie State community is beyond appreciative of the legislators’ support of our university and community.

Appropriating $25 million over two years toward the project, the Legislature allocated $8 million toward the Human Performance Center this year with the intent to fund the remainder next year. Also funded with $25 million in student fees and donations from Washington County, the City of St. George and private donors, the center will house medical programs that will prepare students to address the healthcare needs of the community. The facility will lend Dixie State the resources necessary to offer academic programs in exercise science, sports and recreation management, health administration, and population health as well as partner with the University of Utah to offer physical therapy and occupational therapy degrees.

Additionally, the center, which is slated to be built off of University Avenue in front of the Student Activities Center, will cater to the needs of southern Utah’s event-based tourism industry. The facility will be equipped to host local, regional and state high school games, Huntsman World Senior Games competitions and community-sponsored sports events.

The center is expected to be 150,000 square feet and include specialized classrooms and labs to support academic programs as well as the campus recreation and intramural program and exercise facilities including basketball courts that convert to indoor soccer venues, a fitness center, a track and a climbing wall. Additionally, the center will feature a 50-meter swimming pool with space for spectators on the deck, making it the only pool in southern Utah to meet NCAA requirements to host Division II meets and only the second in Utah to do so.

their space requirements and ensure that the center meets their needs. We plan to break ground on the Human Performance Center this fall and will continue to share our progress with you.

Speaking of progress, the renovations to Legend Solar Stadium are moving right along.

The replacement of the track and field are in full swing and expected to be completed prior to the Fourth of July. We are excited to welcome the entire community to Legend Solar Stadium for the Kony Country Fourth of July Celebration again this Independence Day. Just like last year, the event will feature great music, fun, and, of course, fireworks.

Thanks to the Legislature’s authorization to Richard “Biff” Williams bond Legend Solar’s donation, we anticipate President of breaking ground on the new grandstand projDixie State University ect this August. Situated on the east side of the field, the structure will house new locker rooms, restrooms, concessions, and ticketing.

The new grandstand will increase the university’s capacity to host events and will become southern Utah’s premier hub for large-scale athletic, public, and civic activities. In addition to hosting NCAA Division II tournaments, the new grandstand will allow DSU to host high school state tournaments and community music concerts. Already hosting the Huntsman World Senior Games and high school marching band competitions, the stadium will be able to accommodate more people at these popular events. The Trailblazer football team will continue to play on the field as the grandstand goes up, and we expect to have the additional seating ready for the 2018 football season.

As these facilities are added to the Dixie State University campus, it truly is an exciting time to be a Trailblazer. I am confident that when the facilities are finished, Trailblazer Nation will be an even better place to live and go to school.

Active, Balanced, Connected For the Bennett family, living an active lifestyle is more than just staying healthy or having fun; it’s about maintaining balance and creating connections – as a family, and within the community. With ten children, (eight of those being boys), it’s often about simply getting the kids out of the house!

As a family, the Bennetts enjoy swimming in their backyard, fishing at the local ponds, and playing pickleball.

Their real passion, though, lies with competitive, team sports.

Their children all play basketball. The four oldest have competed at the high school varsity level, and the five younger dream of someday wearing a Dixie High jersey.

Soccer is also a family favorite. Their children have all played soccer at one time or another; though their oldest daughter traded her soccer cleats for track cleats while in high school, and two of their younger boys are considering football and baseball.

Former Olympian Sebastian Coe has said: “Sports is a universal language, building more bridges between people than anything else I can think of.”

The Bennett family is personal proof of Coe’s statement, as they experienced sports building bridges within their own home when they adopted their two youngest sons from an orphanage in Haiti.

“When we brought our boys home from Haiti they were ages six and seven,” reflects Tonia. “They had spent most of their lives in an orphanage. Everything was new to them, from ice to microwaves to carpeting. They spoke no English, nor could they read or write in any language.

They went from surviving in a third world country, where everyone was of their race, to living in a new culture, where they not only didn’t understand the language, but looked and felt completely different from everyone around them.

And, though they finally had a loving home, they didn’t fully understand what a family was – or how to interact within one.”

“However,” adds Steve, “one common denominator

they had was soccer, and it became their first way of finding common ground in a world full of so many differences. They had grown up playing soccer on the dirt field of the orphanage, kicking a ball or any other round object available with their bare feet.”

Within two weeks of leaving Haiti, the boys joined their first soccer teams. This is not only where they formed their first friendships (and learned how to play in cleats), but also where they discovered family pride in sharing a common goal and interest with their siblings.

Since that beginning, two-and-a-half years ago, the boys have not only competed in soccer; but found success and connections through basketball, baseball, and flag football.

Sports are a connecting glue for the Bennett family – from early morning father/child practice sessions to evening games of speed on the driveway to celebrating state championships together, and, yes, even bridging children from diversified beginnings into one large, united family.

With an average weekly schedule that includes 15-20 practices, 6-10 games, miscellaneous church activities, a dance class, piano practice and schoolwork, finding balance and moderation can be a real challenge.

Epicurus stated: “Be moderate in order to taste the joy of life in abundance.”

It’s apparent the Bennett family lives with an abundance of life – and places to be. However, since their family’s primary goal is to have that joy in life that Epicurus talks about, the Bennett family has established a few rules to practice moderation while still maintaining a rigorous sports schedule: God and family come first. This means that, as part of their religious observance on Sunday, the Bennetts take a complete break from sporting activities. No practices, no games, and no watching sports – even on TV. “It may seem an extreme way of promoting moderation,” laughs Tonia.

“But we hope it’s teaching our children to appreciate the gifts God gives them, and to use those gifts to honor Him.” Additionally, the family sets aside one evening a week in which everyone must be home by 6:30 pm – even if it

means leaving a practice early, or missing an event. The rest of the evening is spent as a family. This rule is tested often, but Steve and Tonia feel that it has helped their children realize sacrificing one’s individual ambition for the family whole is what creates strong families and individuals.

Support each other! It’s not an uncommon sight to see the entire Bennett family dressed in blue at a high school sporting event, supporting one of the family members. At times that means the younger siblings forego their own practice or game to be there. And, as much as possible, the high schoolers are also encouraged to be at the younger siblings’ events.

Tonia remembers one time when their oldest son brought his high school teammates to his younger sibling’s third grade city league basketball game. “It meant the world to that nine-year-old boy. For a moment, he was the superstar with a fan club!”

We can’t do everything. With competitive sports comes a lot of pressure to attend expensive sports camps, travel to various tournaments, and compete on multiple teams at multiple levels. With children playing on 12-14 different teams throughout the year, such obligations are impossible to meet.

So, the family has a priority system. First, they support local camps and tournaments which help them be an active part of the Southern Utah community. “We want to be visible and give back to a community that gives so much to us,” comments Steve.

Second, they support travel opportunities only if they contribute to a team goal, but decline those that are more about promoting individual play and opportunity.

By limiting their travel, the Bennetts feel it teaches their children moderation (a quality lacking in society) and discourages entitlement (a quality too abundant in society). “Moderation prevents our family from experiencing ‘sports burnout,’ teaches the kids the ‘we before me attitude’, and prioritizes our time to better play and serve within the local community.”

Thomas Kinkade stated: “Balance, peace, and joy are the fruit of a successful life. It starts with recognizing your talents and finding ways to serve others by using them.”

“Service is a huge part of why we do team sports,” says Steve. “A lot of that service comes through teaching our kids good sportsmanship, and encouraging them to reach out to others by encouraging a teammate, complimenting an opponent, and being an example of character on and off the field.”

Family service goes beyond kind words and actions, and is found in time spent within the community coaching, managing teams, and helping with fundraisers. Steve coaches multiple teams a year, which not only keeps him connected with his own children, but gives him the opportunity to mentor and provide sporting opportunities for other children. Tonia is the team manager for two club soccer teams, as well helping run the concession stand for the high school soccer team.

Though, at times, their life can feel a little too active and become unbalanced, the family tries to focus on what is in place instead of what isn’t. Tonia smiles as she thinks about the clutter and imperfections that occur as you raise an active family.

“Someday we’ll have an organized home, controlled schedule, and get it all together; but probably not until the kids are all raised,” she laughs.

Until that time ... you’ll find the Bennetts playing ball!

Meet the Bennetts – Steve was raised in Houston, Texas and met Tonia (Monroe, Utah) at Brigham Young University, where Steve graduated with a degree in exercise science and Tonia in elementary education. The family lived in Provo, Utah; Houston, Texas; Birmingham, Alabama; and Cedar City, Utah before settling in St. George almost 18 years ago.

The Bennetts have ten children: Their daughter, Emily, and her husband, Matt, live in Cologne, Germany. Their son, Devin, and his wife, Alison Wagner (also from St. George), are students at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Tyler is serving in the LDS Washington DC North Mission, speaking French. Their younger six children still live at home: Jace (17), Ethan (14), Kaden (12), Lucito (10), Brinlee (9), and Robenson (8).

Their family is not complete without mentioning their son, Steven Jr, who died as a newborn while the family was living in Birmingham, Alabama where Steve was attending graduate school for a Physical Therapy degree. Whereas their other nine children keep them happily running from event to event, it’s Steven Jr. who helps them keep an eternal perspective on what truly matters, when it comes to creating a forever family!

With the Dixie Regional Medical Center expansion in Ifull swing, the landscape | project FA M LY surrounding the hospital campus on River Road seems to change almost daily, and | C U LT U R E those involved with the project are thrilled with the progress.

“We’re we’re | on W track E L Land NE S Son budget,” says Scott Wyckoff, Regional Director of Strategic Planning for the Intermountain Healthcare Southwest Region, adding that there are four main phases of the project, the first of which is slated for completion in spring of 2018. The rest will be staggered completion dates, ending with some interior renovations of the existing hospital structure in early 2019.

Overall, the construction project will expand the hospital’s offerings and consolidate them by bringing existing services at the 400 East campus to the River Road campus. The project grows that campus by approximately 400,000 square feet. “It’s exciting. This is many years in the planning and a lot of effort,” says Wyckoff.

His enthusiasm is not simply based on seeing blueprint sketches come to fruition in concrete and steel, he is excited about the services Dixie Regional will be able to offer the community as a result of the project – services including an inter-operative MRI, expanded intensive care unit, more conveniently located women’s and children’s services and of course the new cancer center.

“This is not just a cancer center; it’s a translational science center,” says Gary Stone, Operations Officer with Accountability for the Intermountain Southwest Cancer Center and Intermountain Precision Genomics.

Stanford University is a partner in the research-based precision medicine that will be located in the new building.

In an amalgamation that only exists in a few centers across the country, the science and research being conducted to conquer cancer will take place in the same building where the physicians are practicing, creating an optimal environment for following through on physicians’ hypotheses and allowing scientists to see the patients they are helping, right across the hall. “It’s a pretty significant endeavor,” says Stone. “I feel a deep sense of passion for what we are trying to accomplish.”

The comprehensive cancer center will offer a robust line of services and procedures, including radiation oncology, imaging, surgical oncology, medical oncology such as chemotherapy and infusion, and patient navigation.

The center will include four labs – the translational science center, immunology, clinical genomics lab and Stanford Medicine genome technology center – each focusing on various aspects of cancer research and treatment.

Stone and his colleagues have recognized the need for an expanded cancer center facility for quite some time, given the significant growth of the existing program.

“We’ve rapidly outgrown the space at 400 East where we are currently operating,” Stone says. “Since beginning genomics we’ve seen 20 percent in-migration, meaning 20 percent of new volumes coming to us from outside our service area.”

Those involved in the planning anticipate

even stronger growth once the new center is completed. “We believe it will become a destination cancer center,” Stone. “People will want to come enjoy our climate and our community while receiving cancer care.”

Stone believes the impact of precision medicine will be an economic boon for the future of St. George, and he is not alone. The noon keynote speaker at the St. George Economic Summit agreed. Dr. Mary Walshok, Associate Vice Chancellor at University California San Diego and a nationally renowned economic consultant, says she is incredibly impressed with what Intermountain Precision Genomics is doing here. She pointed out that precision medicine is “the hottest thing happening in the country – in the world.”

“The potential that this represents for globally positioning this region is huge,” Dr. Walshok says. “You really could be a model for smaller places that are trying to create real value for their citizens to come. It feels to me like you’re on the road to success.”

FIFTY FIFTY Years Miles for

Having turned fifty one years old at the beginning of the year, I did some reflecting on my time in the sport of mountain biking.

It wasn’t a soul searching trip down memory lane, or anything so profound. Just a look backwards at some great times. Judging by the sheer hours I have spent riding my bike, mountain biking is certainly high on the list of favorite things in my life… Perhaps, I’m looking at it too profoundly now!

Something I noticed standing out in my memories is the abundance of mettle-testing situations I have put myself in. Whether it be the seven times I’ve ridden the fifty mile True Grit Epic, climbing Seegmiller Mountain (It’s the highest peak looking south from St. George. There’s a road up there. A steep, tough road…), or riding sixty-plus miles to the Mount Trumble school house on the Arizona Strip, I seem to gravitate to the “I wonder if I can ride that far” challenges. I’ve never been the fastest racer. I’d much rather ride for fun than train that hard. The only races I’ve won have been small affairs – but that’s okay. I found other ways to challenge myself. In races, I race the clock, not necessarily other competitors, seeing if I can finish within a certain time. So the idea of putting in big miles for the challenge of it all fits in perfectly with my “racing myself ” mentality.

For my fiftieth birthday I decided it was high time for a challenge.

It wouldn’t be the biggest or toughest ride of my life, but it would be a challenging celebration of my half century on this big blue marble by riding a mile for each year.

I started out wondering if I chose the right weekend to even make

the attempt. It was January, and cold.

Thirty-two degrees cold. I was nursing a sinus infection, and it had rained recently, so there was a chance of muddy trails that would end my day. Give it go, I thought, and headed from Washington City onto Prospector Trail down to Red Cliffs Recreation Area, then back up through Church Rocks. Next I found myself riding the Virgin River path from the Telegraph trailhead to Man’o War road in Bloomington (a good ride in itself ) with a lunch break at Confluence Park (this wasn’t a race, after all). Next, I hit the trailhead on Navajo drive and headed up the ever-classic Green Valley Loop to Jay’s Wash, across Stucki Springs and Fenceline to the Rim Trails in Santa Clara, then retraced my tracks back (again, at twenty miles, a good day’s ride itself ).

I finished with fifty three miles. Enough to not do it again for a few years?! Was it easy? It wouldn’t be very challenging if it was. It was cold, I didn’t always feel great, and, at times, it was a long day in the saddle. On the other hand, it was a beautiful day (the desert was gorgeous) there were times when I felt great and alive, and there was joy and accomplishment that overrode the feelings of pain and effort. Perhaps these are the very reasons I challenge myself this way. A big ride mirrors life in many ways. They both have their ups and downs (physically and mentally) and both will certainly test your mettle!

Do I recommend this type of ride for everyone? Nah, we all have to find our own challenges. All I’m saying is find your challenge and chase it. The only person you have to impress, is you!

Georgefest

A Celebration of Heritage, Community, and Cultural Diversity

For the past two years, Southern Utah residents and visitors have heard the familiar refrain. It’s the motto (and guiding philosophy) of Georgefest, the popular community celebration that takes place in Historic Downtown St. George on the first Friday of each month. Soon to celebrate its second anniversary, Georgefest has become the premier Southern Utah entertainment destination for locals and tourists alike.

What is now an event attended by several thousand people monthly began as a wish by one longtime resident to honor the past. A few years back, documentary filmmaker – and Southern Utah University Adjunct Instructor – Melynda Thorpe was doing research for an upcoming project, and began immersing herself in the area’s history. Coincidentally, at the same time, an associate approached Thorpe – who also has an extensive resume in public relations event production – about putting on a first Friday event.

“While doing my research about the pioneers who came to the area in the mid1860s, I learned that they loved gathering in the evenings at the center of town,” Thorpe said. “They would share meals together, sing, dance, and celebrate the fruits of their labors as the desert cooled in the evening air. I began thinking about a monthly event, it made perfect sense to pay homage to those early pioneers and to recreate a similar sort of community celebration.”

Thorpe worked closely with the City of St. George, sharing her vision and ensuring compliance with stringent permitting and insurance regulations. She also presented what was at the time a revolutionary concept: the addition of a “Jazz Garden,” a jazz venue where beer and wine would be served to the 21+ set. The Jazz Garden would serve as the economic driver for the event – making it possible to offer a free Main Street concert and DJ dance party to the community.

“The idea was that the Jazz Garden would address St. George’s increasingly diverse demographic, one that enjoys sophisticated musical offerings along with adult beverage offerings,” Thorpe explained. “While I anticipated that this would prompt some major pushback, I was delighted to see how receptive

the Mayor and City Council members were to our vision, and how supportive the community majority turned out to be in making the Jazz Garden a reality.”

“From the first time the city council and I heard the idea for George Streetfest, we loved it!” said St. George Mayor Jon Pike. “We saw it as another opportunity to bring people downtown for fun, food, and entertainment.

It was also important to us because downtown businesses were behind it.”

In June of 2015, George Streetfest on Main (now known simply as Georgefest) began as a relatively modest event, with the majority of the entertainment and familyfriendly activities – including performances by local musicians, games, food vendors, and street artisans – concentrated downtown at the intersection of Main and Tabernacle streets.

Said Thorpe, “From the start, it was crucial to our team that we offer entertainment that

would appeal to all age-groups, and that would inclusively draw parents with children.”

As word of the event spread, Georgefest’s coterie of fans steadily increased. With St. George offering the ideal climate for nighttime entertainment al fresco, Historic Downtown was soon the place to be every first Friday. Today, Georgefest has transformed into a sprawling monthly party spanning several Downtown blocks, complete with DJ-led dance party on Tabernacle Street, a food truck village, street buskers (singers, jugglers, musicians and the like) performing for tips, a photo booth, games and activities for the youngest of attendees, facepainting, artisans offering hand-crafted jewelry and other items, and the best of local, regional and national musical entertainment on Main Stage from 6 to 10 p.m.

At the Georgefest Jazz Garden – now presented by The Desert Pulse – the initial jazz fare has since been supplemented by blues and classic rock. Jazz Garden visitors (who must present a valid ID for entry) can also choose from a minimenu of gourmet tapas, along with craft brews, boutique wines, and specialty sodas.

injuries or limiting your performance? The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a tool used to identify limitations or asymmetries in seven fundamental movement patterns.

In 1995, Gray Cook and Lee Burton attempted to develop a tool that would improve objectivity and collaboration between the professions of physical therapy, strength and conditioning, and athletic training. The FMS was originally developed to gather objective data for statistical analysis of human movement patterns with respect to functional performance and injury prevention.

Several authors have evaluated the risk

factors that contribute to overall injury rates in athletics such as previous injury, body mass index, muscle flexibility, and biomechanics during athletic movements. Some of the intrinsic factors include: agonist/antagonist muscle rations for strength and endurance, structural musculoskeletal abnormalities, neuromuscular control, core weakness, and contralateral muscular imbalances. (Brown, MT. 2011) The FMS is composed of seven movement patterns, which are designed to provide observable performance of basic locomotor, manipulative, and stabilizing movements by placing an individual in extreme positions

where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and motor control is not utilized. (Cook, Grey) A study published in the Journal of International Sports Therapy found that an athlete had approximately a 4.7 times greater chance of suffering a lower extremity injury during a regular competitive season if they scored less than 17 on the FMS. (Letafatkar, et al., 2014).

Many organizations, including Green Bay Packers, U.S. Military, and New York Jets, have benefited from the FMS. This is a tool that can be beneficial to any and all sports and physical activities. I have used this tool with my daughter, a dancer, who has also developed a love for track and field. We were able to identify and address her weaknesses, which has helped her to avoid injuries and improve her performance.

How do you Look Feel?

By Emily Fonnesbeck RD, CD The summer months are upon us, and many find themselves apprehensive about putting on a swimsuit. While you might assume that changing how your body looks is the key to more confidence, that’s actually not what positive body image is about. Beauty Redefined, a non- profit organization based in Salt Lake City says it best: Having positive body image isn’t believing your body looks good; it is believing your body is good, regardless of how it looks. It isn’t thinking you are beautiful; it is knowing you are more than beautiful. It is understanding that your body is an instrument for your use, not an ornament to be admired.

Having an accurate view of body image is important to me and the work I do. We fight food because we fight our bodies. If we hope to make peace with food and change eating behaviors, we’ve got to make peace with our bodies.

Food and body are holders for shame. We aim to reduce shame through diets or food manipulation, which only encourages more shame when (not if ) they don’t work. You don’t want to take care of something you hate. Cultivating a truly positive body image pushes out shame and allows us to take care of our bodies in a way that supports health and wellbeing. It becomes less about appearance and more about feeling and functioning well. Everything changes when you shift your focus from how you look to how you feel.

It’s probably not a realistic goal to try to get to a place where you never think negative things about your body. It’s likely that you will struggle to a certain extent at some point with poor body image. It could be acute or chronic, subtle or severe and it will probably come and go, but you should expect it. The key is to keep it in perspective.

When negative body image feels overwhelming and suffocating, it’s probably because you believe appearance to be most important. The best way to decrease the intensity of negative body image is to find, cultivate, and pursue more meaningful endeavors. In essence, become more worried about living a meaningful life than what you look like doing it.

The following exercise may help: 1. Write down 3 things that are most important to you. I’ll share mine: family, faith and being true to myself.

2. M ake these your priority, and schedule regular activities to include them. Chances are, if your negative body image is severe, you may not have had the time or energy to give to these things. Using my examples, instead of spending energy on social media comparisons, body checking, weighing, obsessing or feeling preoccupied, I would practice refocusing my energy on playing with my kids, morning devotionals, and respecting myself by not saying mean things to myself about myself. As summer approaches, this may mean you want to make memories at the pool with your family, friends, kids or other loved ones, regardless of what society tells you to look like doing it.

3. Body image soon settles into perspective, and the intensity of difficult emotions decreases. If you feel them increase, you know you need to set some boundaries and reconnect with your values.

One last vital piece of the body image puzzle: it has NOTHING to do with your size, shape or weight. I see a wide variety of clients, and weight has never made a difference in who does or doesn’t struggle with negative body image. It’s all about perception, and where you choose to put your time, attention and energy.

Roy Nisson

Husband, Father & Hollywood Dentist

From astronauts to movie stars, Roy Nisson was the dentist for some of the most famous people in the world. Though he has many claims to fame, he reports that his biggest life achievement was securing the hand of 1941 D-Queen, Janice Schmutz Nisson in marriage, 75 years ago. “I fell in love with her in the sixth grade,” he shares, “and I have been smitten ever since – even though I was so bashful I hardly dared look at or talk to her until we were students at Dixie College. Even then, it took several attempts before getting a date.” They were engaged just a few months later, and married on February 7, 1942.

Roy was born in the old Nisson home on the corner of Main Street and Telegraph in Washington City on May 31st, 1921. Roy was a twin, but, unfortunately, his twin didn’t make it. The population in Washington at that time was approximately 300 people. “Half the town were my relatives,” he jokes. “With the freedom we had back in those days, and with no pavement on the roads, the main vehicle for traveling was a horse. The boys rode horses and the girls walked.”

Roy also enjoyed swimming in the Boilers and Israel Nielson’s pool, as well as the canal and Virgin River. “Growing up in Dixie was a dream for young people.”

His first twenty years of life were spent in Washington City, attending local schools – including a four-room schoolhouse with four teachers that taught up to the eighth grade. One of Roy’s favorite teachers was his eighth grade teacher, Karl Larsen. The old four-room

schoolhouse is now a museum, and sits just east of the Nisson home.

He loved to play baseball and basketball as a youth, but music caught his attention, and he learned to play the trumpet. He had to ride his bicycle from Washington to St. George early in the morning for band practice, then ride back for school. He attended Woodward and Dixie High School, where he served as the FFA President, and Dixie College, where he received his A.S. degree. He says he really enjoyed playing in the band at Dixie College. At BYU he received his B.S. and then went on to the University of Southern California for Dental School, where he was the top student in his class.

“As a young man, Janice was the prettiest girl I had ever seen,” Roy recalls, with a sparkle in his eye. Roy and Janice tied the knot on February 7, 1942 and moved to California, where they worked at Lockheed Aircraft during the war, working on the P-38 and earning the whopping wage of $0.43 per hour (which was the base, and $.03 was the graveyard differential.)

Before being drafted, Roy joined the Air Force and discharged as a Major. He has great memories of his time in the USAF, including getting to know Charles Yeager, the man who broke the sonic barrier.

Roy received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery, and was an instructor at USC before starting his own dental practice. He practiced dentistry and orthodontics for forty years, taking over the practice of Doctor Hollenbeck, who had built up a very nice practice – including many Hollywood movie stars.

On the short list is Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Ginger Rogers, Howard Hughes, and Olivia de Havilland. He worked on Marilyn Monroe’s teeth just days before she died and states, “She had the prettiest set of teeth I have ever seen.” Ginger Rogers became a dear friend of the family, and accepted the request by Roy to come to St. George and be the Grand Marshall of the D-Day Parade, as well as speak in the historic Tabernacle, which caused quite a commotion in town. “Clark Gable was a nice fellow as well,” Roy recalls. “It was a nice experience to get to know all of them.”

Roy and Janice decided to move back “to the days of our youth,” and built their dream home in St. George, where they developed a beautiful farm and horse ranch. Roy’s love of horses started in his youth, when his father traded two cows and a calf for a pinto mustang that had been roped out in the Cane Beds desert. “She was a sorrylooking horse when we got her,” Roy remembers, but after spending the winter in the fenced-in haystack she turned into a beauty, and even threw a colt – which was Roy’s pride and joy, and he rode her until he left for college. After getting back into the horse business, Roy continued to ride his horses right up to his 93rd birthday, and would ride still, if he could.

Roy and Janice’s roots run deep in the red Dixie sand, and they grew up with plenty of it in their shoes, as there wasn’t any pavement on the streets back then. They dearly love their hometowns of Washington City and St. George, and just across the creek from the old Cotton Factory is a beautiful park in Washington City rightfully named Nisson Park. Roy and his brother, Antone, traded farmland in Washington Fields for the property to ensure it was turned into a beautiful park, adorned with a beautiful monument to their father, Willard O. Nisson, thanks to his and Janice’s generosity.

After moving back home, Roy and Janice became involved in Dixie College and donated money for the dormitories, affectionately known as Nisson Towers at DSU. He was also a member of the original Dixie Golden Generation Committee and served on the National Advisory Board for ten years. Roy has served in the LDS Church

WasE serving L L N aE S S as a bishop, and has held many other positions, as|well mission with his wife for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, where they supervised the many young sister missionaries for a year, which he states, “was one of the highlights of my life.”

Despite all of his life achievements, when asked about his greatest accomplishment he is quick to answer: “By far, the best move I ever made was to entice Janice to marry me – even though it was a hard proposition at the time, and took a lot of convincing. We have had a successful marriage and family together, and much of the credit goes to her.” They have five children – Chris Kennedy (Kirt), Martha Colarusso (Paul), Sheri Neilson (Rick), Jim (deceased), and Bob (Virginia), 14 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren – all of whom they dearly love. They have also helped raise another 28 children and youth by opening up their home and helping them get through some life struggles.

In his 96 years, Roy has had enough life experiences to write a book. He has traveled the world, meet people of all varieties and walks of life, received several academic degrees – including an Honorary Doctorate Degree at the DSU 2017 Commencement, and been a friend and dentist to some of the most famous stars in history, yet, at the end of the day, Roy reiterates that his greatest accomplishment was “getting the 1941 D-Day Queen to say yes!”

One of the kindest and most generous people around, Roy is quick to elude any attention or praise for all he has done. He is a true “gentleman and a scholar,” humbly and consistently returning all the credit for their combined successes in life to his sweetheart, Janice.

Planning for the Future Involves Planning Together

By Steven Dunham Fantastic things are happening throughout the greater St. George community. Over the past few years, growth has picked back up to near record levels. At Washington County School District, we are working hard to provide a quality educational experience for the more than 31,000 students enrolled in our district. As part of this, we are developing a detailed strategic plan for the educational needs of our children for the next five years and beyond. There are many opportunities where parents can help us as we move forward with these plans, and it all starts with a few short questions.

First, it’s important to understand what our goals are. This strategic plan is being created on the foundation of four core beliefs that we must maintain for our students. They include: 1. All students will graduate college, career, and life ready.

2. We will create a positive, focused, organizational culture that values the expertise of every employee.

3. We will work collectively to support and encourage relationships with our parents, students, and taxpayers.

4. We will sustain educational partnerships critical to the success of our students and schools.

Over the coming days, many of our students and parents will have the opportunity to participate in a brief survey. It will include 20 short questions which will help us clarify the things we are doing well, and the things we need to improve on. Each question is designed to help us with one of the mentioned core beliefs, because we want to do better and we want our students to succeed in their lives beyond high school.

There will be many of you who may not have the opportunity to take the survey, but have great ideas and suggestions for us at the school district.

Growth in Washington County will not be slowing down over the foreseeable future. The county, cities and our local climate is poised to welcome thousands of new move-ins over the coming years. It’s a group effort, which we often refer to as the “Dixie Spirit,” where stakeholders, the community, business, higher educational institutions, and people from all walks of life are working together to help and provide for the improved growth of our children. As Webelos Pack 534 visited the 11th Street Gallery in St. George to earn their Art Explosion Badge, the comments were interesting: “It’s cool. To use pinks and purples as highlights?”

“Yeah, I would never have thought of that.”

“This art is very different from mine.”

“Dude. You have aliens landing and planes blasting bombs down – but this art is bigger and better.”

“Look at the light on the water and the rocks. So amazing.

How do you think he does that?”

Having Scouts tour his gallery is not an uncommon event for Ron. From mentoring high school and college students in art, to listening to the children’s requests when he airbrushes the horses at the carousel (“Mr. painter, can you put some pink on that horse’s saddle?”), to donating art for fundraisers, artist Ron Larson believes in giving back to the community – and kids are his favorite. He is especially looking forward to the experiences he will have with the 4th and 5th graders who will be touring his Vistas and Visions of the Colorado Plateau exhibit when it comes to St. George Art Museum for three months, beginning in August. Five years in the making and now in its third showing, having previously been in Northern Arizona and then Salt Lake City, Ron, who is a national level artist exhibiting worldwide, put together something incredible: sixty paintings, a loop­ ing powerpoint, and a narrative (soon to be published in book form) explaining the science behind the scenery. Teaching the kids about it just sounds like fun to him.

“Twenty for 20” events scheduled in 2017 to celebrate its 20th anniversary of bringing art to Southern Utah. The Board chose Ron because his values align so closely to theirs; the Museum has an incredible record of community service, with programs and events for everyone. These include the Family Discovery Center, the Love of Art Tour fundraiser, events for animal protection, poetry readings, lectures, and the Adult Study Center. There are a host of communityinvolvement-in-the-arts events, too. The first Monday is Game Night, the second Saturday is “SmART Saturday,” the third Thursday is both the Book Club and the Art Conversation, and third Fridays bring out the art lovers for the Gallery Stroll.

Located in historic St. George, the Museum has a nominal entrance fee, but “membership” means unlimited access and helps with the annual fundraising. Donated funds are used wisely, and the Museum is grateful for the wonderful volunteers who help with its activities. There is no better use of your time than to be a part of instilling in children a respect and a love for the arts. After all, the next da Vinci might be one of the 3,000 fourth and fifth graders who are coming this fall!

Bringing Hope to Suicide Prevention

Dixie State Students form the first collegiate HOPE Squad

By Joel Griffin Over the last several years, suicide in Utah has been on the rise.

According to the Utah Department of Health, suicide is the leading cause of death for Utahans ages 10 to 17 and the second leading cause of death for ages 18 to 44. Sadly, Utah has the fifth highest suicide rate in the nation when adjusted for age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Suicide’s prevalence among youth became a key issue in the most recent general session of the Utah State Legislature, in which five bills relating to suicide were passed, one of which included a resolution declaring mental health issues a public health crisis at higher education institutions.

In a new effort to prevent suicide and combat the stigma surrounding it, Dixie State University students have banded together to create the nation’s first collegiate HOPE Squad.

A HOPE Squad is typically present on both the middle and high school level and is a school based peer-to-peer program that partners with local mental health and community agencies. The members of the HOPE Squad are trained to know how to actively listen and help peers who suffer from depression or thoughts of suicide.

According to HOPE4UTAH, HOPE Squads’ nonprofit umbrella, most suicides are preventable and young people contemplating suicide frequently show warning signs – seven out of ten will even tell a friend.

Still, many of these entrusted peers often do not inform adults or counselors. HOPE Squad training aims to empower students to persuade individuals to seek help and report when a student is seriously struggling.

The Utah Student Association’s increased focus on mental health issues led DSU Student Body President Sarah Ramaker to research the success of HOPE Squads in

schools, and before long she reached out to Dr. Gregory Hudnall, founder of HOPE4UTAH, about the possibility of having a HOPE Squad at a university level.

“I wanted it to be at a college level so badly because when many of us start our college careers we get so focused on ourselves and our own goals that we forget to look sideways,” Ramaker says. “I think it’s important that we think about others as well while we’re pursuing our own dreams.”

Student senators from the Dixie State University Student Association took on the task of gathering just under 200 nominations from student peers from each of DSU’s six colleges. Now a select group from those nominations meets in a new weekly HOPE Squad class to receive training to better serve fellow students.

“When you hear troubling stories from peers that are struggling, it can also take a toll on you,” Ramaker says. “So it was really important to me that we see the students every week just so we can look in their eyes, buoy them up, and give them the support they need.”

The class includes Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper Training and provides lectures and exercises from professionals in the mental health field.

Ramaker explains that the HOPE Squad fulfills several purposes, including breaking down walls around the subject of suicide, giving struggling students peers they know they can talk to, and having a group that is proactively looking out for the well-being of other students and getting them the help they need.

“I can see this helping a lot of people and being a really great thing for this campus. It takes an army of goodness and positivity to get rid of negative feelings and despair,” Ramaker says. “DSU is already so person-to-person focused, but one person contemplating suicide here is just one person too many, and we want to do something about it.”

A Passion for Roses

How one St. George man is making the desert bloom as a rose

By Joel Deceuster Passions come in all types and sizes. Mine just happens to come in the form of roses. I’ve managed to plant over 170 rose bushes (and I’m not done yet) in my St. George garden; all lovingly selected to compliment the colors and feel of the southwestern sunset.

They surround my adobe home and twice a year they bloom in harmony with one another. In the spring, two weeks prior to and following Mother’s Day, and during our second spring here in St. George – which is mid-September through late October. My neighbors wait anxiously for both of the “big blooms” that welcome them to their Tonaquint Terrace neighborhood.

It’s my form of therapy, which never fails to solve my problems. There’s something about digging in the dirt and planting living things that just seems to do it for me. Any real gardener will attest to the therapeutic affect that cultivating a garden can produce.

I’m a big believer that once our families and careers are grown we still need something to watch over and nourish. We need a passion to keep us stimulated and productive. For my wife, it’s our 18 grandchildren. For me, it’s the thousands of rose buds I produce every year as a gift to all those who wander by, and for my students at Dixie State University, where

I teach a continuing education class on “How To Grow Roses In Southern Utah.”

I admit that pruning, planting and pampering 170 rose bushes, not to mention the myriad of perennial flowers that compliment them, is a lot of work… but it keeps me sane. And, it keeps me outside enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. It stretches me and keeps me limber when I bend over and get down on my hands and knees to fertilize and groom the plants. It’s also a great strengthtraining program when I’m hefting those 50-pound bags of fertilizer from Star Nursery or unloading and spreading two tons of the world’s best compost from the St. George Reuse Center, off Brigham Road. It’s a workout for sure. Yet, at the same time, it’s a highly meditative experience when early in the stillness of each Sunday morning I gently water and shower each bush.

At 65, with the right help from my trainers at Intermountain LiVe Well Center, I think I

can keep it up for at least another ten to twenty years. And, if I can get those grandkids of mine to do the heavy lifting, I might be able to go on indefinitely. I certainly have the passion for it, and that makes all the difference.

About the Author Joel Deceuster and his wife, Madeline, moved to St. George four years ago from San Jose, CA where his home was surrounded by over 250 rose bushes.

He spent his career as a marketing executive in the 24/7, fast paced world of the Silicon Valley. He currently works for the Intermountain Foundation at the Dixie Regional Medical Center. Last week I had the fortune of attending my wife’s | WELLNES grandmother’s 100th birthday celebration. Her name is Anne McNeil. As friends and family were gathering, I turned to see Anne’s sister, Helen, walking toward me. I stood in awe. Helen is 102 years old – it was hard to believe!

Nora, their oldest sister, was not in attendance – she passed away a short time ago at the age of 106.

I reflected on these amazing “young” ladies. How have they been able to live so long with so much grace and beauty? They have lived through and endured so much…

World Wars, The Great Depression, The Holocaust, and so much more. They have also watched the world go from horse and buggy to space exploration and internet connection.

Wouldn’t you think they would be tired, bitter, or dead by now? Is this strictly a genetic thing?

I wish I knew more about these three women to piece that puzzle together. Unfortunately, I was unable to get to know Helen and Nora as well as Anne. I do know that their mother asked Helen to watch over Anne. She said that is one reason she came to the party. She is keeping her commitment.

In addition to world conflict and challenges, I know that Anne has fought a few battles of her own. These include, but are not limited to: beating cancer three times, the death of her husband, and a fractured hip. In fact, the day that Anne broke her hip, I escorted her to her scheduled appointment at her friend’s house to play bridge.

regenerative medicine, has become a hot topic in medical literature and patients have become | WELLNESS interested in what regenerative medicine can do for them. Regenerative medicine employs treatments that have the potential to help the body to heal, and to restore and establish normal function. One area of regenerative medicine that may have the potential to treat chronic painful conditions involves the use of stem cells. Because stem cell treatment is new, we wanted to share with you some FAQ’s about stem cell treatment, to help you understand the potential benefits and concerns with these types of services.

What are stem cells? Our body is made of cells. At one point, every cell in our body came from a stem cell. Stem cells are cells which have the potential capability to become other cells within their lineage and also have potential to signal to cells around them to perform certain functions. A good way to think about them is that they are like parent cells that can give rise to other cells.

Depending on the type of stem cell, they can potentially become bone, muscle, nerve, and other organ tissues. They may also help other cells perform their functions properly and efficiently.

So why are stem cells being used? Because they have the potential of helping diseased or damaged tissue regain its function and the potential to replace the improperly functioning or damaged cells.

Where do stem cells come from and how do we get them to use for treatments? Stem cells can come from a variety of sources. Stem cells can come from adipose tissue (fat), bone marrow, amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood, or from embryos. Stem cells used for treatment are not derived from embryos. Stem cells can be donated from others or harvested from the patient they are to be used for.

How are stem cells used to treat various conditions? Stem cells are harvested or donated and come in a liquid form. They can then be injected into various parts of the body or infused into the blood stream.

What types of conditions are being treated with stem cells? There are several disorders and diseases being treated by stem cells.

Some cancers and blood disorders have been treated with bone marrow transplants for years. Use of stem cells in diseases such as heart failure and other organ failures are being studied. Stems cells have also been used and studied to treat degenerative and chronic diseases, including osteoarthritis (joint pain) and degenerative disc disease (spine pain). However, most uses of stem cells are not yet well studied and are considered to be experimental. Because stem cell treatments are considered experimental, most treatments are not typically covered by insurance.

How effective and safe is stem cell treatment? Effectiveness and safety for some treatments, such as bone marrow transplants, is well documented and understood. Effectiveness for treatment of osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease, is still not known. Doctors have seen some patients do very well from stem cell treatments, but good quality research has not yet been performed to validate the effectiveness and safety.

Where can I find stem cell treatment in St. George? The physicians of Southwest Spine and Pain, with several locations throughout the state, including two locations in the St. George area and one in Hurricane, are well versed in the most up to date information regarding stem cell treatments for pain. They are trained to perform stem cell treatments and offer stem cell treatments to patients when appropriate. They are also involved with a research study looking at stem cell treatment for degenerative disc disease.

About the Author Dr. Rick Obray is a spine and pain care specialist at Southwest Spine and Pain and has performed over 20,000 imaged guided procedures. He obtained his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed residency training in radiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also completed fellowship training in musculoskeletal MRI at Johns Hopkins and pain medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He is board certified in both radiology and pain medicine. Prior to attending medical school he completed a master’s degree in biochemistry at Utah State University.

Dr. Christensen attended the U. of U. School of Medicine, earning an international award for his spine research.

After completing a surgical internship in Charlotte, NC, Dr. Christensen began a physical medicine & rehabilitation residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Christensen was later elected to serve as chief resident and completed a multidisciplinary pain medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins, learning the most up-to-date image-guided procedures, anesthesiology, physical medicine, neurology, and psychiatry techniques.

Allie Blazzard received her associate degree from Dixie State College before attending Brigham Young University for her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. Allie has worked in Southern Utah as a nurse practitioner since 2004, and has specialized in cosmetic injections for over ten years. Have you ever looked in a mirror at the aging person staring back at you and thought, When did I get old? Your shoulders slump a bit, and you wonder why your youthful soul doesn’t reflect in your reflection.

The paradox of living in sunny St. George is that although the climate and surroundings enable us to live an active lifestyle, making us feel younger, the sun and dry climate contribute to premature skin aging, making us look much older.

So we sigh, accepting our fading youth, trying to embrace our new “old” face, or perhaps we go spend a small fortune on antiaging creams and serums or begin nightly rituals that involve bizarre home remedies we read about online. An active woman in her late 70s was playing pickle ball last year | WELLNESS when she somehow tripped and fell going forward. She reached out with both hands to brace the fall and when she hit the ground, one of her wrists broke – an unusual and suspicious break. She was brought to the emergency room where I helped surgically repair the break. We then followed up with a bone density test – a DEXA (DXA) scan – and, as I suspected, she was diagnosed with osteoporosis.

The word osteoporosis comes from the Greek term for “porous bones.” Close to 10 million Americans have osteoporosis – a condition in which your bones become weak and brittle. Another 43 million have low bone density, which can then lead to osteoporosis. People at greatest risk include thin, white and Asian females age 65 and older. While men can develop osteoporosis, they are generally at less of a risk.

A diagnosis of osteoporosis doesn’t mean you have to stop participating in the activities that make your life fulfilling. Fortunately, there are steps – both medical and nonmedical – anyone can take to help minimize the risks associated with osteoporosis. And while this list isn’t necessarily comprehensive (your caregiver can get you more information), these ideas represent a few alternatives you can take.

Non-medical prevention alternatives Exercise is an activity most everyone can participate in that strengthens bone density and reduces the chances of developing osteoporosis. When it comes to exercise that builds bone, the key is participating in impact exercise. Impact exercise includes weight training (especially the squat exercise), plyometrics (jump training), jumping, stair running, body weight exercises, jump roping, walking,

running, hiking, and backpacking. While cardiovascular workouts (e.g., aerobics, biking, etc.) strengthen your heart and lungs, you strengthen your bones when you participate in impact exercise.

Another preventive strategy geared toward older patients involves gait and balance training. Too often, older people experience unnecessary fractures as a result of simple activities like stepping into the shower, walking up the stairs, or negotiating turns while walking. When you’re weak and your balance is off, you risk falling and breaking a hip or other bones. Gait and balance training is effective at any age. Even people between age 85 and 90 have the ability to work their muscles and get stronger. Improving stability decreases your chance for a fall.

Making household modifications is another great way to prevent problems: get rid of rugs; modify the thresholds at doorways in your home to eliminate a rise; and, one last consideration that animal lovers don’t like to hear, get rid of the dog!

I can’t tell you how many people get pulled over by their dogs, or trip when the dog gets under their feet. At a minimum, be very conscientious around house pets.

Medically related prevention alternatives Along with these “lifestyle” alter­ natives, supplement and drug options can make a difference as they help strengthen bones. The first suggestion isn’t exactly a “medical” solution, but relates to your calcium and vitamin D intake – important ingredients in the bone-building process. If you have a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, you may not need supplements, but if you’re not maintaining a well-balanced diet, consider adding appropriate supplements.

Another tool designed for people diagnosed with osteoporosis is called bisphosphonates – a class of drugs that prevent the loss of bone mass. All bone in your body has a natural turnover throughout your life. There are cells that absorb bone, and others that create bone.

Bisphosphonates block the cells that absorb bone thereby slowing bone loss and increasing density.

Finally, another effective tool for building bone is a prescription drug called FORTEO. Administered as an injection, this drug helps your body absorb more calcium from your diet and has been shown to increase bone density by 20 percent. This is a good alternative for someone with osteoporosis who has tried other treatments that haven’t slowed bone loss. Check with your caregiver to find out more and to see if you’re a good candidate for these or any other medical alternatives.

Osteoporosis doesn’t have to be a prescription for a sedentary life. You can take action to strengthen your bone density and minimize the risks around you. Even if you are diagnosed with the condition, a number of available options help strengthen your bones. Taking proactive steps and getting appropriate medical attention, will help you live a full, active life and minimize the risks associated with osteoporosis.

By Nick Stucki Are you experiencing neck, mid-back or low back pain? Do you have pain traveling into your arms, chest or down your legs? Is there a time of day where your pain is more intense? Do you find looking down, breathing or standing for an extended period of time aggravating? Are you having trouble sleeping due to pain?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may benefit from an epidural steroid injection. An epidural steroid injection is an injection into the epidural space, which lies outside of the spinal cord and extends from the base of your skull to the sacrum. These injections can be performed in your neck, mid-back and low back depending on your specific problem area.

Back pain is one of the most common complaints seen in the clinic, and can also be associated with a loss of function, or an overall decrease in the quality of life. This can be a huge burden on the overall health of the body. Epidural steroid injections could be the answer. Your doctor may order an X-ray, MRI or CT scan to further evaluate your problem area. When reviewing these tests with your doctor, you may hear words like spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease or arthritis. To put these words to term, these can be the cause of your pain.

How are epidural steroid injections done? First, we bring you into our procedure room and lay you on your belly, and wash and clean your skin using an alcohol based cleaner. Then, using live X-ray guidance, 62 www.saintgeorgewellness.com

we inject numbing medication (lidocaine) into the problem area. Once numbing medication has been injected, we then inject corticosteroid, which decreases inflammation in the area providing pain relief that can last up to three months or more. These procedures can be repeated three to four times a year. If you have a fear of needles or are nervous about this procedure, we offer light/conscious sedation. Side effects of this procedure may include skin rashes, facial flushing, insomnia, headaches, elevated blood sugars and a jittery feeling.

Though these are not common, side effects typically subside within five days.

To better prolong your pain relief, your doctor may also recommend physical therapy. A physical therapist can help demonstrate proper exercises to strengthen your core muscle groups and improve your posture.

Tinnitus can plague patients… and some patients do not perceive a difference in their tinnitus, even when treated with hearing aids. I’m excited to tell you about a new report recently published in JAMA indicating that a new BrainHQ game can significantly reduce the patient’s perception of tinnitus.

This study shows that using certain brain exercises found in BrainHQ can help patients cope with tinnitus. Yes, the results are the first of its kind, and need more investigation, but the results are promising!

On the behavioral and cognitive self-report instruments, researchers reported no significant differences between the group who did the exercises and the control group that did not. But, when asked if their tinnitus had changed since the start of the study, 50% of people who had used the BrainHQ exercises said it had improved, with 30% saying it had much improved.

The scientists also looked at the brains of the study participants with MRI imaging. These images showed significant differences between the two groups: those who used the BrainHQ exercises showed strengthening in areas of the brain associated with control and attention.

Most personal achievements and successes realized in one’s working career, and life in general, are a result of personal preparation, advanced education, technical skills training, work experience and, quite likely, one or more significant mentors – people in your life who really cared about your success.

One significant mentor in my earlier life was my high school baseball pitching coach.

This highly respected mentor made it a point to find me on game day and ask the question – “Rich, how does the arm feel?” My reply was typically, “Fine, coach.” His positive and affirming statement followed – “You are going to pitch a great game today.” Needless to say, we experienced many winning baseball seasons.

Affirming statements of encouragement, coming from a respected mentor, helped me play the game of baseball at a level of excellence that I was not able to see in myself.

Confidence was instilled in me by a respected mentor.

There have been many other unselfish, highly respected and appreciated mentors in my life who have been valuable beyond measure – a spiritual and optimistic military best friend who gave his life in the service of our country, a compassionate and devoted spouse, an internationally-known leadership consultant and several other unselfish and influential people who took a genuine interest in me.

You may recall a number of influential people who have had a significant impact on your own thinking, performance, confidence, competence and motivation to succeed in your chosen work, or other life pursuits. It may have been a loving parent, influential sibling, a high-achieving class mate, or a caring business or ecclesiastical leader.

An influential mentor is one who has a genuine interest in the happiness and success of others, is willing to share valuable personal experience and insight, and give of their time to advise and encourage. They help and support those willing to be mentored and desiring to progress in their various life-roles.

Consider the wealth of life-experiences, insights, opinions, and successes that you have enjoyed throughout your life and career – largely, perhaps, because of your own influential mentors. Consider, as well, that there are many younger and less-experienced individuals within the greater St. George area and elsewhere who could benefit greatly from your expertise. You could be a valuable “success mentor.”

Don’t let the titles fool you – these days of celebration have no rules or requirements for whom you dedicate them to. By Jasher Feellove, Owner – Be Hot Yoga Yoga is the unification of mind, body, spirit (breath). An essential part of yoga is meditation.

Meditation can bring balance and peace into one’s life through the art of letting go. In the eight limbs of yoga, meditation encompasses three, known as Samyama. Meditation is something you know through experience, it cannot be taught. There are common themes in meditation, but everyone must find their own way. You cannot help anyone until you find your way, but once you have, you will give help without intending and receive help without looking for it.

Two types of meditation are Transcendental Meditation and Vipassana. Both are unique ways to approach the art of meditation.

Transcendental Meditation is a way to avoid harmful thoughts and promote relaxation by sitting with your eyes closed and repeating a mantra. Vipassana is the focus of breathing and contemplation through impermanence. The practitioner is to make a conscious effort to mind their breath. Watching one’s breath can allow them to gain insight into impermanence, which is one the essential doctrines of Buddhism. In these practices, peace emerges more preeminent. We forgive our past the best we can, and meet the future with strength and poise. In the Diamond Sutra, the author discusses the cause of depression (living in the past) and anxiety (living in the future). When a person is younger, the tendency is to live in the future, and when a person is older, they tend to live in the past, thinking of things that they could have done differently. Meditation is the only thing you cannot do, because it is the most natural, to live moment by moment.

The great Zen teacher, Shunryu Suzuki, whose most noteworthy student was Steve Jobs, stated that “If you desire any state, begin from the state desired.” There is no preparation, one must start how they want to become. The practitioner must begin with forgiveness.

In her first national competition, she was privileged to earn a Bronze medal. This girl, with all her physical strength, flawless technique, and dogged determination, has come to learn through all of her competitions, with their ensuing victories and defeats, that there is more to the achievement of her goals than the grueling hours of athletic training. She has realized that the mind, equally as strong and disciplined as her body, is paramount to her success as a lifter.

Like my daughter, each of us needs a strong mind with which to successfully navigate our lives. Thankfully though, we don’t need to be semi-professional athletes to benefit from a fit mind. Whew!

Here are a few ideas to implement which will help exercise your mental self:

1

Identify/Address limiting beliefs. We all have sub­ conscious beliefs that hold us back. They are usually things like “I’m not smart enough”, or “people won’t like me if they get too close”. It’s not hard to see the connection between these false beliefs and the disappointments that are bound to follow.

One way to find these beliefs is to write down all the reasons why you can’t get that job promotion, or find that right relationship. As you write, you’ll be surprised to see all the limitations under which you’ve been operating. When you find them, address them – challenge them.

As you address false ideas with truth, you will see them dissolve.

Circles of Concern. A wise person once taught me this when I was wrestling with some challenges, and it has become a favorite to share with my clients. It goes like this: take a blank sheet of paper and draw a circle in the middle.

It should be big enough in which to make a list. Then around that circle make a bigger one. In the smaller circle list some things that YOU have control over: your actions, words, activities, etc. Then in the larger circle list things you have NO control over, but are concerned with: the actions of friends or loved-ones, broken economy, etc. This bigger circle contains the worries you turn over to a higher power.

You give them to God. And then you let it go. Your focus is then only on the things listed in the smaller circle – the struggles within your realm of control. Now that your mental resources and your energy are directed in appropriate ways you’ll be more capable of conquering your challenges.

Ask quality questions. Instead of the same old “why me?”, ask yourself “What might make this better?” or “What kind of person will I be on the other side of this problem?” A quality question will change your perception of any challenge, keeping your mind sharp and healthy as it searches for a helpful solution.

Visualize the process. If you are required to make a speech and are overcome with fear, envision yourself confidently approaching the podium, successfully giving your well-prepared speech, walking back to your chair afterward, and enjoying the great feeling you have of delivering a fabulous address to a friendly and attentive audience. By Lisa Larson Coming on the heels of a jam-packed spring concert series, the theatrical cast and crew at Tuacahn are gearing up for the opening of this summer’s Broadway season, and looking ahead to presenting a new Christmas musical, Fairy Tale Christmas.

Bringing to life the animated favorite, Shrek the Musical, alongside the highly anticipated stage production of Disney’s Newsies and the masterful Mamma Mia!, it’s little wonder season ticket sales are at record highs, continuing the overall upward trajectory of Tuacahn ticket sales for the past 18 years.

“We could hardly keep up with the phones,” Kevin Smith, Tuacahn CEO, says of the opening days of ticket sales. “If that’s any indication of our season, we’re in for a great one.”

Based on a book by the same name, Fairy Tale Christmas tells the story of some of the most famous fairytale villains who don’t like how they’re depicted in children’s stories, so they decide to take matters into their own hands – by kidnapping Santa Claus!

“It’s very clever and fun,” Anderson says. “We did a reading of it during last year’s New Works Festival and the reaction was amazing.”

The production will take place in the newly renovated indoor Hafen Theatre, directed by Jeffry Denman, who will also direct this summer’s production of Disney’s Newsies.

As the author, Scott McLean says he can’t wait for people to open this holiday gift he’s been preparing.

St George Housing Market – Good or Bad?

Today, I want to discuss the housing market in St. George. I went to the experts in our market and asked each of them, “What do you see happening in the housing market for 2017 and 2018?”

They all agree that the outlook is positive for both sellers and buyers.

Let’s take a look at interest rates first. All agreed that the slight creep in interest rates recently is a good sign. Neil Walter, Economics and Upper Division Finance Instructor at DSU and Managing Director of NAI Excel, says that he expects “a little bit of a drift in interest rates, but not a scary jump.” Vardell Curtis, Chief Operating Officer for the Washington County Board of Realtors and annual contributor to the Economic Summit adds, “They are still incredibly great rates. Most can remember when interest rates were 17 and 18%. I don’t think we’ll see those rates, but as a buyer it tells me to get off the fence. The more you pay in interest, the less house you can afford.” Becky Staples, the top loan officer at First Colony Mortgage (the largest mortgage company in Southern Utah) adds that long term rate increases “could impact home sales and values.” But she “expects them to increase slowly and hover around 5% for 2017.”

Everyone wanted to address inventory. St. George has had record shortages of inventory over the past several years. This year, Curtis reported that we are at 3.5 months inventory. Buyers that qualify and want to buy a house in our market aren’t always able to find what they want. Walter pointed out that the lack of selection causes some to not relocate to our community. Walter anticipates double digit appreciation for 2017 and states, “This appreciation is good for buyers too. We still need prices to come up a bit to incentivize sellers to sell. This will increase the selection for buyers.”

By 2018, Staples anticipates we will be “closer to historical norms, and buyers will have a little better selection.” Curtis also pointed out, “One of the really bright spots in the market – people can now afford to sell.”

So, what is going to happen to appreciation? The median sales price increased 10.1% year-over-year for the 6 month rolling average from 2015 to 2016. Walter anticipates a similar growth for 2017, stating, “Price appreciation is beneficial for sellers, and will incentivize buyers.”

that Utah was the fastest growing state, according to percentage, with a growth of 2.03% from July 2015-2016. This increase in population means that we will continue to see high demand for properties, and is one of the many reasons we have seen the median sales price in Washington County increase from $217,500 to $249,999 in just one year.

Bottom line: Our economy and housing market are strong. We have more buyers than sellers. Many sellers who were unable to sell before can now put their home on the market because of the slight increase in our median price. This will create a better selection for buyers who want to get a home. Many will decide to buy now, rather than wait – in the event that interest rates do go up. 2017 should be a great year for St. George! With this economy, it’s no wonder we’re one of the fastest growing cities in the US.

On my weekly radio show, I discuss why stopping your mortgage Wlife EL N E S to S you, if you are over the age of 62. payments| for is L beneficial First – let me throw a disclaimer out there: When I say you should stop making your mortgage payment, I’m not saying you should simply stop paying your bills or be late on a mortgage payment and have your credit negatively affected… That is certainly not what I mean by the statement.

What I am referring to is watching my senior clients (who are in a home they would like to retire in) making mortgage payments on their home for the next 20-30 years – payments that will never benefit them directly. Yes, there will be more equity in the home for their children when they have passed, but it will cost them hundreds of thousands during their retirement that they could keep in savings.

Let me try and break down an actual example of what we see with our community, especially here in the heart of Dixie – as we have such a large population who are over 62 years of age.

I’ll start with a brief explanation of the FHA or government insured HECM loan. This loan allows a senior client to take 50 to 60% of the value of their home and use that loan to replace their current loan, thus eliminating their current mortgage payments for life.

So, let’s say you have a home worth $300,000 and you owe $160,000; now, depending upon your age, you could take out a HECM government insured mortgage and eliminate your mortgage payment for the rest of you and your spouse’s lives. You would simply be rolling your current conventional mortgage into a non-recourse government insured reverse HECM loan.

In the example above, a typical mortgage payment is around $900 per month with today’s interest rates on a 30-year fixed mortgage. By rolling your mortgage over from a conventional loan to a government insured HECM reverse loan, you could save you and your spouse that $900 per month – for life.

That’s $900 more per month that you could either use or put in savings during your retirement. Do you really realize how much you’d be saving? That amount adds up to $10,800 per year! Over a 20 year retirement, that means an extra $216,000.

This is why you’ll hear me on the radio (and see the television ads from Fonzi and Magnum P.I. or whomever) that if you are over 62, and you are still making a mortgage payment, then you need to stop!

If increasing your retirement savings by adding the influx of $900 to your income and increasing your retirement savings by over $200,000 (and over a quarter of a million during a typical retirement) sounds like music to your ears, then the HECM reverse loan just might be for you.

If, however, you already have a great retirement, financially speaking, and your spouse does not lose income when you pass, and will have plenty to live on when you are gone – this loan may not be for you. If you are determined to live conservatively, as much as necessary, in order to pass on the maximum amount of equity in your home to your kids or heirs, then this loan is not for you. However, there is a reason that over 60% of the retirees moving into our community are choosing to use this loan for their home, versus paying cash or continuing to make mortgage payments for the remainder of their lives. Like any financial product – the HECM loan is not right for everyone. But, it is worth exploring your options and learning how it would work with your specific situation.

Many financial professionals are wisely preaching the need for diversification as a means of better managing risk, but how many of them are suggesting taking a second look at an old reliable tool – life insurance – as an essential element for a sound financial strategy?

Arguably, the biggest issue with life insurance is the tendency to oversimplify the whole buying process. Some “experts” will say it’s either term or permanent; furthermore, these same experts then advise their clients that term is the only way to go, for everyone.

Come celebrate our Utah heritage this summer!

By SGHW Staff Summer in St. George is a hot time, but this 24th of July it’s going to be extra hot! This is the date that Utah celebrates its pioneer heritage. We remember how Utah became the great state it is today because of the hardships and the travels of our ancestors. This year, Southern Utah will be honoring them in a big way. “The Pioneer Legacy” is coming to Legend Solar Stadium at Dixie State University on July 24th. Written by world-renowned Merrill Osmond, the production will captivate its audience with wagons, handcarts, live animals, music and special guests.

It will have one of the largest firework displays in the valley, and definitely the place you want to spend the evening of July 24th.

“The Pioneer Legacy” & firework display is a charitable event produced by the Olive Osmond Hearing Fund and is FREE to the public.

The cast will consist of 150 kids from the Vista Charter School in

Washington County. These young girls and boys will be depicting the stories of what some of our pioneer ancestors struggled with, through music and dance, and will tell the tales in a unique way. The Youth Pioneer production has been in Salt Lake City since 2012. Now, with the partnering of Dixie Days of ‘47 and Dixie State University, the Youth Pioneer Legacy will celebrate its 5th year at the DSU Legend Solar Stadium – right here in our backyard.

The production will be legendary, and will hopefully be the first of many more to come to St. George. The Olive Osmond Hearing Fund is partnering with the Sound of Life Foundation and, together, they will be helping two or three local deaf children from the Washington County School District by giving them the gift of hearing. Along with having such a great cause, the Pioneer Legacy production also wants to recognize some of the pioneering families and individuals who have made such huge impacts and contributions to society, and this community. This year, the Pioneer Legacy Award will go to the Atkin family. This family has played a large role in settling what was once called “Atkinville”… the area we now know as Sun River and Bloomington.

The Sacrifices and Commitment

Being the sister to three brothers who are also athletic, Halee’s mother remembers when she was just starting out on the field, and was naturally much more aggressive than the other players. Learning from her brothers, she would often do things she thought to be the game of soccer, but that other parents would complain about. She depicts that the culture and community gave her “the basics,” but she soon recognized that if she really wanted to be a competitive player and take soccer to the next level, she would need to get more serious.

For the past two years, Halee has played for the very prestigious and competitive Elite Clubs National League, a decision that requires a significant amount of dedication and sacrifice as a player. While most students got to use this spring break as a time to get away from their responsibilities, Halee used the time to focus on her skills as a soccer player. Giving up the opportunity for a family vacation, Halee chose to prioritize her opportunities and attend a Player Development Program, in which she was selected to attend from a pool of out of 200 players from the states of Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. From a young age, Halee dreamed of getting a state ring, just like her siblings before her. However, playing elite club soccer meant she was not permitted to play high school soccer, which meant giving up one dream in exchange for a bigger one.

In the future, she plans on qualifying for the University of Utah’s honors program and excelling in the sports medicine field with hopes of becoming a physical therapist to athletes like herself. In meeting, interviewing, and getting to know Halee Barker on Wednesday, March 8th – otherwise known as International Women’s day – one thing was very clear to me. To Halee, there is no “secret” to success; it takes hard work, dedication, and commitment to reach your goal. And when you reach your goal? You use it to build an even bigger dream.

What to Feed Fido

Navigating the overwhelming world of pet food

By Dr. Victoria Morris If you have been to the pet store lately, you have most likely noticed the vast multitudes of pet food available for your four-legged family member. Labels such as “Grain-free,” “All Natural,” and “Beef is the first ingredient.” So, what does all this mean?

What is the best food for your pet? What types of foods should you avoid? Can your pet eat corn? These questions may have run through your head at one time or another.

Below are a few tips for navigating the world of pet food.

There are many luring labels that pet food companies will place on the front of their bags or cans that appeal to consumers. However, unlike food fit for human consumption, a definition of what these labels must mean is lacking. Labels such as, “all-natural,” “organic,” and “holistic” do not currently have a set of standards that companies must follow. Meaning, any company can label a dog food with these luring labels and they are no different from the bag of dog food you can purchase at the grocery store for one quarter of the cost. Without a set of standards that these pet foods must meet, there is no consistency in formulations.

The next topic to navigate through is diets labeled as “grain-free” and “raw.” While our dogs may be from a lineage of wild canines, 90 www.saintgeorgewellness.com

they have been domesticated over time.

Our pets’ intestinal systems have adapted to diets with grains such as corn, rice and barley. Grain is not bad for your pet, and has good attributes such as starches for energy.

Similarly, as our pets have adapted to grains in their diets, they have adapted to eating cooked diets. Proteins in raw diets are harder to digest for pets and pose significant health risks. Many raw diets contain pathogens such as E.coli and listeria. These are present in a large amount of raw diets because the food is not cooked or processed. Not only can this food be dangerous for your pets, they can pose health risk to the owner as well. Handling of raw foods can allow the owner to contract many forms of bacteria found in raw meats and cause significant health disturbances.

A lot of pet food commercials will advocate for the idea that “real chicken is the first ingredient.” Unfortunately, the first ingredient is not always what makes up the bulk of the food. This is because the ingredient list is made up from the “heaviest” ingredient to the “lightest.” For example, chicken breast has a high-water content so it makes it “heavier” and therefore often listed as a first ingredient. Compared to something like corn, which does not have a high water content, so it is “lighter” and will be further

down the ingredient list. Therefore, there may be more corn than chicken in a diet but because the chicken is “heavier” it is listed as the first ingredient. To really get a true breakdown of the ingredient that makes up the largest proportion of the food, you would need a dry matter breakdown.

So, what is the best thing to look for when shopping for pet food? The first thing is to purchase food from a company that has a board certified veterinary nutritionist. This is someone who has gone to vet school for four years, and then pursued an internship and residency (another four years) learning about pet nutrition, and finally, has passed their board exams. If you are unsure if the brand of pet food you use has this person on staff; simply call the 1-800 number listed on the bag and ask to speak with their board certified veterinary nutritionist.

The next best thing to look for on the bag is AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) certification. This is an organization that has no regulatory authority, but sets stringent care standards that companies can voluntarily formulate their foods by. This label should be on the back or side of the food bags and say that the food meets, and has been tested based on, the AAFCO standards.

According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), ADHD occurs in approximately 5% of children. ADHD is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder, which may cause some confusion and often leads to a belief that it is a purely biological disorder. The danger of viewing ADHD as purely biological is in ignoring the possible social, relational, and cultural components of the disorder. Presently there are no biological markers consistent with an ADHD diagnosis (APA). ADHD usually involves a combination of behavioral and emotional problems, leading the child to act out in highly active and disruptive ways. Many children experiencing ADHD suffer from poor academic performance, relationship challenges within their family, and problems getting along well with their peers. ADHD impacts not only the life of the child, but also their teachers, friends, and families. The most common form of treatment for ADHD is medication, however, research indicates that individual and family therapy can help children and their families better cope with the symptoms and challenges associated with ADHD. Research within the field of marriage and family therapy indicates a clear relationship between ADHD symptoms and the ways in which parents care for and discipline their children. There are two components worth exploring. First, the behaviors associated with ADHD may be the child’s way of reaching out to his parents for attention, comfort, and safety. We refer to this attitude of reaching out to the parents as attachment behavior. If the child feels like his attachment needs aren’t being met, he may act out to get his parent’s attention. It’s interesting to note that many children would rather have negative attention than no attention at all. Second, the behaviors associated with ADHD may be amplified by ineffective or inconsistent parenting styles. In other words, the child may be acting out because they are confused by the way they are being disciplined by their parents – “Dad lets me get away with this all the time, why is Mom so upset?” Take heart parents, you are likely doing the best you can and your job is a difficult one. Here are a few suggestions that might help: The first step is to try and recognize the difference between your child reaching out for needed attention and simply misbehaving. If they need attention they may be asking lots of questions, acting silly around you, or “bouncing off the walls.” It may seem like they just have lots of energy and nothing productive to do with it. If this is the case, put down your phone, turn off the TV, set aside your work, and spend some time with your child. Go for a walk, play catch, get out a board game, talk about their day with them, or help them do a household chore. Time with your child may be the most important thing you can do. If your child seems defiant – like they are intentionally doing things they know you don’t approve of – then the issue may be related to the way they are being disciplined. The most common problem is that Mom disciplines one way and Dad disciplines another. If this is the case seek for some education or help in how to effectively discipline. Make sure you get on the same page with your spouse as to how the children should be disciplined, and go to your children as a unified front.

Avoid acting aggressively when you discipline, but use clear and direct language so your child understands what they did wrong and why. Consequences are important, but always remember to reward the good behavior as well. Consistency is the key.

By Jack W. Rolfe Spring time in Southern Utah brings the Ironman event to our community. This is a grueling event which requires fortitude and stamina to complete. I believe we all face “Ironman events” in various forms throughout our lives. From birth until death we are automatically enrolled in the School of Life. We have no choice about entering, but we do choose how we handle it. As a physical therapist I have worked with the senior population for 30 years, mostly in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and through home health care. During this time I also coached girls’ basketball on all levels of competition.

I started by coaching my daughters in neighborhood leagues. This advanced to creating little leagues for girls in my community. I then moved on to coaching middle school teams, high school teams, and club teams in the Amateur Athletic Union also known as AAU. In addition, I had the opportunity to coach in college and at WNBA summer camps. These two unique career paths allowed me to interact with thousands of the elderly and thousands of young girls.

I gained some valuable insight while working with the youth and the older population, simultaneously.

My desire is to give you some guidance in your own journey through the School of Life from what I have been learning in mine. In the game of basketball you will face many challenging opponents. None will be as “tough” as facing life itself, and facing yourself.

the country. I always start out by inviting a few young people to join me in front of the audience. Throughout my years of practicing as a physical therapist treating the elderly for numerous injuries, diseases, and ailments on a continual basis, I would witness failure due to the patients adopting an attitude of giving up. They would often blame this choice on everything and everyone except themselves. In fact, in many cases, they ended up where they were due to allowing their toughest opponent to win.

Through fear, doubt, lack of confidence, peer pressure, unfavorable circumstances, trials, and several other reasons, we let ourselves get in the way of reaching our full potential in life. As I coached these girls and seniors, I found great satisfaction in facilitating them to attain their full capacities – and beyond. This prompted my passion to develop what I learned, and use it to teach and assist others.

What do you do when posed with a question that causes you to think about what chances you have to succeed at a certain task? In the movie Facing the Giants, actor Alex Kendrick plays the role of high school football coach Grant Taylor. In one scene, Coach Taylor asks one of his players, Brock, if he thinks they will win the game that week.

Brock’s response is one of uncertainty. He then asks Brock to come to the goal line. This is during practice, and all of the other players and coaches are watching. He informs Brock that he wants him to perform the death crawl, which is being on hands and feet without your knees touching the ground and moving forward while carrying another player on your back. Brock says he can do that for thirty yards. Coach Taylor requests that he go fifty yards and do it blindfolded.

As Brock begins, he is encouraged by his teammates. It eventually becomes extremely difficult to keep going, and Brock wants to give up on several occasions. His coach urges him on, and he finally collapses, proclaiming that he can go no further. At this point, his coach removes the blindfold, and we discover that Brock has covered the entire length of the field – 100 yards!

So, what is the lesson learned in this story? When we are able to remove the barriers that we place on ourselves as limitation of our abilities, we are able to accomplish much more than we expected. I ask you to consider...what is your Giant?

I often ask women their maiden name, and men their address growing up, in an effort to bring the person – as an individual – forward, not the mother or father they are now, or the spouse role they fill, or the older or younger sister or brother position they have filled within their family. I’m interested in how the person evolved – either intentionally or unintentionally. We discover who they have been, who they are, and who they wish to be using kindness and care. Although we relate strongly to our relatives it’s only people behind those roles.

When we think of summer wellness, many areas come to mind. We can focus on eating nutritiously with healthy and creative summer recipes, or perhaps applying sunscreen daily.

The truth is, adopting habits that help us feel happier within ourselves and toward others is the best way to “be well” from the inside out.

Here are three tips that can help you obtain wellness this summer:

Tip #1

Enjoy each moment. When you plan an activity with your kids or with friends, be mentally present. Refrain from thinking about that colleague’s negative comment, what you need to do at work, responsibilities at home, or errands you failed to accomplish.

Enjoy yourself – take a deep breath, and relax! In the book WholeFIT; Wellness for Life, the author quotes Jon Kabat-Zinn’s book Full Catastrophe Living by defining mindfulness as “Paying attention, on purpose, to what one is experiencing right now – in this moment.” The practice of mindfulness can be as simple as focusing on the water running over you when you’re in the shower, relishing the radiant red rock while waiting at a stoplight, or looking into your partner’s eyes during a conversation. It is a simple practice that can have a profound effect on your life, but it takes effort… minds are used to wandering. When you’ve realized your mind

has wandered, gently bring it back to the moment, don’t scold or force it. It’s worth the effort – being present in the moment helps us more fully enjoy life.

Tip #2

Lower your expectations. Often, whether we’re parents, grandparents, or on our own, we look at the summer months with grand ideas of what we will accomplish, only to realize at the end of a week or month that we have fallen miserably short of our expectations.

These expectations not only make us feel bad about ourselves, but can rob us of our ability to relax and enjoy precious moments with ourselves, our friends and family. Be willing to forgive yourself, or even better, let go of the expectations in the first place.

Instead of over-scheduling, take advantage of the unexpected when it appears. Will it really matter if your son doesn’t complete the entire summer workbook in preparation for the 4th grade? How much better will it be when you spend an hour cooking with him or playing at the park and then sitting down together with the workbook for a few minutes? The result will be a positive connection with your son, instead of stress and pressure on both sides. You might have a goal to exercise daily, but with vacations and a lack of routine, you may only make it three times a week. It’s OK. Do your best and then applaud yourself for the success. Lowering your expectation of what has to get done releases you from guilt and negative mental self-talk. Accept the fact that your house won’t always be spotless this summer, and be flexible enough to go with the flow.

Plan activities YOU enjoy.When we engage in activities we enjoy, neurotransmitters in our brain help us feel happy. Activities arising from obligation or societal requirements do not fall into that category. Realistically, only a fraction of the activities that fill our life are necessary. We determine the rest. Look at what doesn’t NEED to happen and replace it with what brings you joy or allows you to spend time with loved ones. The beginning of the summer is a great time to brainstorm on fun activities. Creating a list of activities you enjoy, either by yourself or with friends and family, gives you something to look forward to (do not allow yourself to feel pressure to accomplish them all!) Set healthy boundaries that allow you freedom to find joy in your life so you don’t slip into the martyr role. Then, be present when you are doing what you enjoy! In order to be our best for others, we have to put our own ‘oxygen mask’ on first.

The summer months can be a fun and relaxing time to spend with friends and family. In order to make this summer as enjoyable as possible, prioritize time to engage in activities you enjoy and lower (or get rid of ) the expectations of what you’ll accomplish. As you do this, you’ll feel more relaxed and present in each wonderful moment. Welcome, summer!

Meet Jack and Ron:

Washington Community Center Ambassadors

By Wendi Bulkley, Washington City Marketing/Events Manager Jack Watts & Ron Axton have been members of the Washington City Community Center (WCCC) since the facility first opened its doors nine years ago. These members have gone above and beyond to set the standard for hard work and dedication to health and wellness.

Eighty-five-year-old, Jack Watts says that after his two knee surgeries, “Walking in the water enabled me to build up my muscles again, and helped strengthen my knee through resistance.” Jack has lost 85 pounds and says that exercising at the Center has not only helped him physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. Jack is also a member of the Silver Sneakers program. This program is a free fitness benefit for seniors sixty-fiveyears and up that qualify.

After having back surgery, Ron Axton began walking in the pool-as recommended by his doctors. “Walking in the water has saved me from more back surgeries,” shares Ron. It has also helped him to lose 25 pounds.

On his first day in the pool he was only able to walk two laps. Nowadays, he goes at least a mile-that’s 26 laps!

Both men agree that water walking is the best prescription any doctor could recommend. Jack and Ron walk a mile in the pool every day, and have now walked over 2,100 miles in the pool! They have even formed a walking group with some close friends, and are always recruiting other members to join them. They encourage each other in every aspect of life, and feel that building these types of supportive relationships with others is what makes life fun!

We, at the WCCC, are proud of both their weight loss and their determination despite the various health issues they each face.

Jack and Ron are both strong warriors, and have a smile on their faces each day. “I would be dead without the WCCC,” states Jack, matter-of-factly.

Over the years, Jack and Ron have truly fostered an active lifestyle.

Ron says, “Being a member of the Community Center has brought a whole new family into my life.” Both Jack and Ron express their appreciation to the WCCC staff, “We love each of the employees at the Center. From maintenance, to the lifeguards, the front desk and even the back office staff has made us feel so welcome. Each of them know us, and know when we miss a day.”

Opioid Use Disorder

The Rising Epidemic

By Southwest Healing and Wellness Many months after surgery, she found herself craving oxycodone.

She spent hours each day thinking about how she could get more. She had tried to cut back because of the damage it was causing her family, but the cravings just got worse. She was on the verge of losing her job, her marriage, and her life. Each time she tried quitting, her anxiety and depression went through the roof; she couldn’t sleep, and she became incredibly nauseous. Despair overwhelmed her, and she considered taking her own life to escape her new reality. She, like many others, had unwittingly become addicted to drugs in the form of prescription opiates.

In the United States, over 650,000 opioid prescriptions are dispensed daily, and as many as 91 people die each day from an opioid overdose.

While this epidemic is reaching across the globe, it also hits close to home. Utah currently ranks 7th in the nation for drug overdoses; the majority of which are opioid related, with oxycodone being the highest.

Within the state of Utah, opioid overdoses have now surpassed deaths due to firearms, falls, and motor vehicle accidents. In the last 5 years, Utah has experienced a 400% increase in death from opioid misuse.

Tragically, 1 out of every 10 people with opioid use disorder also have a history of attempted suicide.
