As we settle into another beautiful fall season in Southern Utah, one doesn’t have to look very far to see and experience the many things that make living in this area so wonderful. From the colors of the trees on our incredible mountains, to the smells of fresh cut hay as one takes an early morning walk, or the sounds of a local football game, we truly live in an enchanted place.

In the October/November issue, our emphasis on our Western Heritage gives us a chance to look around our great community and be thankful for the sacrifices of all those that have gone before, and the wonderful legacy they left for us to follow.

Their work ethic, and commitment to family and community were second to none.

Everyone, I am sure, has a family story to tell, and hopefully this issue will give you a reason to reflect on your personal heritage and gather family around to share those experiences with the next generation.

Plan now to attend some of the Livestock and Heritage Festival events at the end of October and feel for yourself that feeling of days gone by. Or you may choose to attend any of the other great events that are happening in our city this fall.

History of Southern Utah

Brands are currently used on cattle, sheep and horses in Southern Utah. A brand is the key to ownership in the livestock business where ownership is everything.

Brands are read from left to right, top to bottom, or from outside to inside. They may be pictorial or geometric symbols, letters, numbers or variations. Brands can be monograms, phonograms (symbolic equivalents of an individual’s name), pictographs, or a word story (using an entire word).

Branding can be traced to early depictions in 4,000-year old Egyptian tomb paintings.

Hernando Cortes burned crosses in the small herd of cattle he brought with him to Mexico, and the vaqueros passed the custom on to U.S. cowboys who developed and refined their own calligraphy by burning or painting on the livestock.

Woolen mills operating today insist the paint used in the branding process of sheep be a type that is easily scoured from the wool.

Modern livestock owners now use a painless technique called “freeze branding” on cattle or horses. In this process the hair on the animal is shaved and liquid nitrogen is used to cool the branding iron prior to application. The hair grows back white, leaving a nice brand.

Registered in 1969, the “Rockin’d Ranch” brand.

The Alma Evans Family brand originated with Alma’s father, John Arthur Evans, nearly 100 years ago.

Harl E. Judd

Schmutz Family

Registered the “JUD” Judd brand in 1940.

Brand has been in continuous use since 1889.

Behunin Family

The Behunin Family brand is in memory of Franklin Behunin (1966 to 1993), born a cowboy and who loved the ranching lifestyle.

David LeRoy Sargent began his career at Southern Utah University in 1920 as the Head of the Agricultural Department.

This brand is known as the “Lone Pine Brand.” One-half mile north of Graff Point in Iron County stands the lone pine tree.

The “Backwards DL” brand was registered by Richard Leigh’s grandfather, Herny Leigh over 100 years ago.

Warren Williams

“JN” was the brand of John Conrad Naegle, pioneer, farmer, rancher, and colonizer. He made his way west at the age of 19 with the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo to Winter Quarters.

Richard and June Sewing moved to New Castle, Utah in 1975 from southern California and currently operate a small hay farm there.

Tom Williams

This brand was originally used by John Lundell before he left the sheep business. Lundell was one of three Swedes who came to southern Utah around the turn of the century to find work.

T.W. Jones and Sons

Born in Cedar City, Thomas Willard Jones was one of the original agricultural developers of the area.

The cattle brand of an upside down “T” used by Warren Williams once belonged to George Perry. Warren entered the family sheep business in 1950 with his father Alex.

Than Naegle

McRae N. Bulloch

The “Spear Head” sheep and cattle brand used by the McRae N. Bulloch family originated over 100 years ago and are proud of their lengthy affiliation with the livestock business.

Francis H. Middleton Family

John Middleton moved to Iron County in 1856.

National Mustang Association

The National Mustang Association (NMA) was founded in 1970 to preserve and protect wild and free roaming horses.

Philip and Emily H. Foremaster

Family has grazed cattle on the Arizona Strip for over 55 years.

Charles Gustave Lundgren Family

Charles Gustave Lundgren came from Sweden in 1888. Shortly after his arrival he moved to Kanab, Utah and began herding sheep.

Waldon Isom

Born January 18,1905 in Hurricane, Utah, Waldon Isom was raised by older Craig Jones Family siblings after the deaths of both is father Thomas Jones used the “TJ” brand in the and mother. Don Dee and Mary Alice Gates

Don Dee and Mary Alice Gates have run cattle on the Arizona Strip and in Utah for many years. The ranch is currently run by second and third generation offspring of Philip Foremaster.

By Terrin Parker Festival City is undoubtedly one of the best places to be during the fall season, as our calendars come alive with reasons to celebrate!

SUU students have returned, and the campus is once again buzzing with activities and energy. Kids are back in school, football season has commenced, and lazy summer days are morphing into lively fall festivities, as the holiday trio of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas come in rapid-fire succession. For local folks, this fabulous season kicks off with The Livestock and Heritage Festival, which has become a family favorite. This festival celebrates our western heritage, something that has literally left its brand on our beloved community.

From its inception, this valley that was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1851 relied heavily on agriculture and livestock as an economic mainstay. The income to support this new settlement came largely from the wool, leather, meat, milk, cheese and butter that came from the livestock they raised.

The first agricultural industry to develop into a thriving business was that of dairying. The women and children would summer on the mountain ranges, caring for and milking the dairy cows, while the men farmed in the valleys below. They sold and traded the butter and cheese weekly to support and sustain their families as well as the community at large.

The cattle industry came alive shortly thereafter, though many of the cattlemen decided to turn to the sheep business instead, as the sheep were better suited to the indigenous plants (some of which were toxic to cattle). The agriculture industry continued to grow, and largely because of it, our community has expanded and evolved into what it is today.

SUU itself, a community cornerstone, has its roots in the agricultural arena. It evolved from the Branch Normal School 6 www.cedarcitymag.com

established in 1897, to the Branch Agricultural College, (a branch of Utah State University) College of Southern Utah, Southern Utah State College and finally, Southern Utah University.

There were certainly trials along the way with regard to agriculture in this area, one being the radiation fallout of 1953 which claimed the lives of nearly 5000 sheep in one year. Despite that, to this day sheep remain the dominant livestock on Cedar Mountain. Cattle and sheep are still moved to and from their seasonal ranges, often by those on horseback, just as their forefathers did more than a hundred years ago.

This western heritage has special meaning to me, as my forefathers took part in almost every aspect across the agricultural board. My great grandfather, D.L. Sargent established a successful dairy business and was head of the agriculture department at SUU for many years. On my mother’s side are three generations of sheep and cattle ranchers, with my grandpa, McRae N. Bulloch, being the oldest living sheep rancher in Cedar City at age 95. His herd was one of those hit hardest during the radiation fallout in the fifties.

My father’s side of the family also represents three generations of ranchers, beginning with goat farming, and evolving into the cattle business that my father still runs today. My family is one of many whose work ethic contributed to the growth and success of this community they so loved and continues on still today.

The commitment and dedication that these cowboys and cowgirls, these sheepmen and women still demonstrate are certainly a true reflection of days gone by. The same strong Spirit of the West remains in the hearts of the next generation, and is evident in the Livestock and Heritage Festival as the town gathers each year to remember, reflect, and celebrate the industry that sustained us and the men and women who raised us, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

Cedar Livestock Market and Auction:

Building on Tradition

“Who’ll give me fifty dollars? Fifty dollar bid, now 55, I’m at $50 ‘n I wan’ $55, $55, bid on $55, I’m at $50 would you go $55, $55 …”

All of a sudden I was sitting back in Preston, ID, as a young college student at a “tack” auction with my younger brother. We had just arrived in Logan, two young kids from Southern Utah, to check out Utah State University. We had heard an ad for the auction on the radio, so we headed to Preston to check it out. We quickly got caught up in the moment and put the winning bid on a few items. As we were in line to pick them up, an old cowboy asked us what we had bought. After hearing our list of saddle blankets, bridles, and assorted other items, and what we had paid he said “You got an incredible deal!” To which we replied, “Yes, BUT we don’t even own a horse!”

It was almost twenty years before I purchased my first horse and was able to use any of that tack, but for one short evening, we felt as if we were a part of the American West, horse or no horse.

As I was thinking about this issue of Cedar City Magazine and our emphasis on western heritage, I thought it was important that we do an article on the Cedar City Livestock Auction. Last Thursday 8 www.cedarcitymag.com

I took the opportunity to visit the auction, and it was comforting to sit and reminisce about the role it played, and continues to play, in our area. There were also a group of students (some from outside the United States) who was visiting the auction for the first time, and I am sure that it was a once in a lifetime experience for them.

Livestock have been commercially grazed on lands in Utah for more than 150 years. Native Americans probably grazed sheep and horses before that time. Grazing of lands by cattle and sheep in Utah increased rapidly after 1847, following the arrival of the pioneers. At the turn of the century there were over 400,000 cattle and 3.8 million sheep grazing in the state. The amount of sheep rapidly declined in the 1930s and 1940s, and was followed by growth in the beef industry as producers switched from sheep to cattle. Currently the sale of cattle and calves represent about one-third of all Utah cash receipts in the agricultural sector. In Iron and Washington County areas, 74% of ranch gross income comes from livestock operations.

DID YOU KNOW? • The average family in this area has owned their livestock operation for 61 years and 83% of them intend to have it operated by a family member in the future.

• The Livestock Auction sells horses on the first Thursday of the month at 10 a.m.

• 68% of the ranchers have attended or graduated college, and of those, 31% hold bachelors or advanced degrees.

• Iron County was the highest producer of potatoes in the state, second highest in production of alfalfa, hay and hogs, and third in total cash revenue from crop production.

In the early days, livestock auctions were located in many cities around the state, making it easy for ranchers to sell their animals.

Today there are only six which remain in operation, and are located in Cedar City, Roosevelt, Salina, Richfield, Smithfield, and Ogden.

The Cedar Livestock Market was started in the mid 1940’s by three or four local livestock men. Sales were held on Saturdays and mostly sold cattle and a few sheep. The market changed ownership a couple of times with LW Gardner from Richfield buying it in the mid 70’s. He then hired Met Johnson to run the sale. Met attended auctioneer school and eventually bought the barn from Gardner and made many improvements. The Market Grill was added along with some new pens.

It was during this time that I first became acquainted with the market and The Grill. I was one of many students that have taken a break (either officially or just one of those days that you needed a pick me up) from their classes at SUU to enjoy the biscuits and

gravy or grab a quick burger.

In 1989, Bret and Margo Whittier bought the barn from Met and Lana Johnson and have continued to keep the reputation going.

The Cedar Livestock Market continues today as a valuable part of our economy. With the support of the great livestock people of Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, and Southeast Nevada, it is nice to know that our western heritage is still alive and well.

In the sentiment of one local rancher, “Our family has owned the place since 1863 to now-- that’s 151 years still in the same name and I’ll be the 4th generation to run it. I will pass it on down to my oldest son, who will go on with it as we all have done.”

I, for one, love, support, and will be forever grateful for the western heritage that we have in Southern Utah.

SUU Agriculture Department Celebrates 100 Years!

Even though the name of the institution has changed over the years, the agriculture department has always been an integral part of the University. It has adapted and evolved over the years to better prepare students for a career in agriculture. Today the official name of the SUU agricultural David LeRoy (DL) Sargent Head of department is the Department of the Agricultural Department.at BAC in 1920.

In 1913, after much discussion both locally and around the state, the Branch Normal School (BNS) in Cedar City changed its name to the Branch Agricultural College (BAC).

Some people felt that moving from a Branch Normal School to a BAC would give way to an over-emphasis of agricultural classes and limit the academics and sophistication then being offered by the BNS. When it was all said and done, a partnership with Utah State University was established and the BAC became a reality. One condition of the name change required that Cedar City provide all the facilities necessary to become an agricultural college. These provisions included supplying livestock and eighty acres of experimental farm land.

Over the years, many of the livestock animals owned by the University have been donated by local ranchers. Subsequently, bulls raised and sold by the University have strengthened the blood line of local herds.

The University still has an 800 acre farm, and it still owns herds of cattle and sheep, as well as horses.

This program grew and the partnership with USU thrived, with students spending two years in Cedar City and the final two years at USU in Logan. In 1985 the first class of students who had spent their entire four years on the Cedar City campus received

Before I had children, I remember a stay-at-home-mom friend commenting to me that her full-time job began each day at 3:30pm when school let out and she began shuttling her tween-age children from sport to sport. At the time, her driving habits sounded crazy to me, but now, as a mom of two elementary school-aged daughters, I am finally starting to “get” her. Why are so many parents willing to dedicate multiple hours each day to their children’s involvement in sports? Here are ten of the best reasons for being a sports chauffeur: 1. Long-Term Health Benefits It’s all over the news and everywhere you look: there is an obesity epidemic amongst America’s children. Rates of overweight children with risk factors for “adult” diseases like Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure are skyrocketing. Regular involvement in sports and physical activity is one of the best ways to fight obesity and protect a generation of young people.

2. Activity for Activity’s Sake What time of day does the majority of youth-crime occur? Most people assume it is under the cover of darkness, but in reality, young people find themselves in the most trouble between the hours of 3-6pm. provides young people with constructive, trouble-busting structure and has been shown to reduce criminal mischief, including drug use, among kids.

3. Social Networking (Minus the YouTube account) Speaking of being accountable to a group, sports often provide a ready-made social network for kids. For a child who has difficulty finding his niche in school, a team sport may offer the camaraderie and support that he is lacking elsewhere. Even for kids who have no trouble fitting in, involvement in sports offers connections with peers who are focused on constructive goals.

4. Encouraging Sportsmanship Winning and losing is part of any sport. Kids who take part in sports learn the delicate arts of winning graciously and losing well.

Being able to shake hands with the competition, no matter what the outcome of an event, serves children well into their adult lives.

5. Understanding the Nature of Commitment Whether for an hour a week, or three hours a day, most sports require a commitment from kids to attend regular practices, team meetings, and games. When kids dedicate their time, energy, and

6. Building Self Esteem Children develop positive self-esteem through accomplishments.

Sports give kids opportunities to learn, achieve, and feel good about themselves through skill development and goal-oriented activities.

When parents and coaches emphasize effort and improvement over winning or individual performances, they foster healthy self-image and positive self-esteem.

(Academic) Performance Enhancing According to researchers at Michigan State University’s Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, young people who play sports perform better in school than those who don’t. Rather than serve as a distraction, participation in sports teaches kids to focus their minds on a task at hand and to manage their time effectively, as they juggle school, sports, and a social life.

America’s Fastest-Growing Sport!

By Cedar City Magazine Staff If someone were to ask you what the fastest growing sport in America is, what would you guess? Soccer? Wrong. Try again.

Football? Nope, try again. Cross Country? Wrong again... I’ll give you one last chance. What? Lacrosse?? YES!! And it has come to Cedar City!

In the past decade, participation in lacrosse has more than doubled and continues to grow faster than any other sport in America.

Driving this growth is the increased participation of younger players across the country. In fact, more than 400,000 youth participated last year! Data from the National Federation of State High School shows that between the 2008-09 and 2012-13 school years, participation in high-school lacrosse grew 19 percent among girls and 15 percent among boys. The game is also growing internationally, which organizers hope will translate into lacrosse becoming an Olympic sport as early as 2024 or 2028.

“There are two main reasons for the trend,” said Rick Burton, Falk Professor of Sport Management at Syracuse University, about the rise in popularity of lacrosse. “One, is that lacrosse is being developed as a gender neutral sport. It’s a virtually identical game between men and women. Two, it’s an active, contemporary game. It’s not based on set plays with limitations of where people can play.”

Despite lacrosse’s reputation as a preppy, Northeast-centric sport, the sport actually grew the most in the Midwest and South with states such as Utah, South Carolina, Minnesota, and Texas. Though these states have never been mistaken for hotbeds of lacrosse, they now boast robust and growing programs.

It is not just athletes who don’t excel at other sports that are playing lacrosse, but players such as Jake Seau, son of former San Diego Charger, and New England Patriot Junior Seau, who grew up playing football before getting “burned out,” deciding to play lacrosse at Duke University. Do you allow deadlines, mishaps, and unraveled ends to crank up the heat or are you able to remain cool, calm and productive?

Take a moment to evaluate your scorecard.

It is important to remember that employers look for a finessed balance of both hard and soft skills. All of one or the other will not win the game, nor gain you special recognition in the workplace. You must bring the two together and convert the balance into the MVE award – Most Valuable Employee.

Value is the end result of this exercise. What value do you bring to the table alongside your hard skills? When your employer is pressed to reduce the workforce and increase the workload, where do you land on the “scale of employees we cannot afford to lose?”

Cyndi Wallace

One of the first graduates of Southern Utah University’s nursing baccalaureate program has made a marked difference in the health and welfare of citizens of all ages in and around Cedar City.

In her capacity of Nurse Administrator at Valley View Medical Center, Cyndi Wallace has fashioned her dream job after beginning her VVMC career as an RN in 1980, immediately after graduating with an associate degree from Phoenix College and relocating with her husband Scott to Cedar City. Festival City USA, she says, was exactly the right town for the couple.

She progressed through a number of positions managing nursing departments at VVMC, as well as working in clinical settings, but says that she knew she would have to complete her degree to continue to move further in administration and achieve her career goals.

“I had always intended to go back to school to get my BSN,” she says, “but could not figure out how to do so while working as a nurse, as most university nursing programs required you to take classes in the traditional way, Monday through Friday.”

“This is a common problem for nurses,” she explains, “because in order to complete a degree, nurses usually had to leave their job for one or two years.” For Cyndi, this was even 20 www.cedarcitymag.com

more impractical, as her family counted largely on her income while Scott was immersed in establishing a restaurant in town. “Add to that the expense of the university classes, and it seemed insurmountable,” she says.

In 2005, the SUU School of Nursing opened a new bridge program for RN to BSN candidates that catered to working professionals. The program took one calendar year, and required only one full day of school attendance per week. The attendant costs, as well, were mitigated for Cyndi, as Intermountain Healthcare provided a tuition reimbursement benefit. The following year she was among the first class of grads, and was promoted to her current position at VVMC .

She subsequently obtained a Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Walden University.

Exceptionally active in the community, Cyndi is a board member of the Cedar City Rotary Club, and just recently ended a 10-year commitment on the Iron County Care and Share Board, although she still serves on the personnel committee for that organization.

She also chairs the organizing committee for the Pink Tea, which raises money for local community women’s and children’s charities.

Cyndi also sits as a member of the Advisory Board for SUU School of Nursing, and supports the University through the

Alumni Association, theatre and music arts events, and athletic programs. She lives just four houses away from the SUU campus, so walking to activities is common.

Scott and Cyndi are parents to a son and a daughter, and are grandparents to three.

However, in 2007, Scott, who had been working as a chef for SUU Food Services, passed away suddenly, and Cyndi was buoyed by the support she received from her colleagues at VVMC. “They were family to me,” she says. “The staff wrapped its arms around me and helped me through.” That show of camaraderie was a large factor in keeping Cyndi here.

“After Scott’s death, many of my colleagues expected that I would move to be closer to family, as I have none living here. But I love Cedar City, it is my adopted hometown, and I can’t see myself living anywhere else now.

Cookie Cutter Mold Broken With New Miss SUU

By SUU University Relations Staff It’s not the red glitter clinging to her neck, the bold red lipstick, or the cheetah print blazer that catches your eye when you look at Heather Garcia. What speaks the loudest is her genuine ability to shine. And this talent comes naturally to the junior from Taylorsville, Utah, and ultimately led her to royalty and being crowned Miss SUU 2014-2015 on Tuesday, September 9.

Garcia isn’t your typical beauty queen and if you peruse the Miss USA pageants, she doesn’t fit the mold. But to Garcia that isn’t a weakness, it’s her strength and what led her to compete in the annual competition.

“When you look at me you may not see the stick thin beauty queen, but’s that why I did it,” exclaimed Garcia. “I wanted to show other girls that you don’t have to be size 2 to have worth and to win.

Everyone is beautiful.”

It is this platform of establishing self-worth that drove Garcia to the stage and what won her the crown, publicizing during the competition that if she won she would start an initiative on campus that empowers women.

“I want to break molds and stereotypes in our society,” revealed Garcia. “Sometimes we get so stuck on what has always been, instead of what could be. This was my way of saying that even if I didn’t fit the previous mold set for Miss SUU, doesn’t mean I couldn’t hold the title.”

Strutting onto the stage in the SUU Wear category, which consisted of a red and white loincloth and bikini over black leggings, Garcia proudly declared that her outfit represented that she is an open book and is venturing into a brand new world “like Tarzan,”

and she likes to swim.

This candid and energetic response during the competition is what won over the crowd and the judges, as claimed by Ellen Treanor, professional-in-residence communications professor and Miss SUU judge.

“All of the contestants were extraordinary and any one of them would have made a wonderful Miss SUU,” she said. “What differentiated Heather was her connection with the audience.

She took every opportunity to reach out and somehow include the audience in her experience, as if she were participating in the pageant for all of us; while having a blast.”

Echoing Treanor’s comments, current Mr. SUU Ryan Bailey replied, “Heather won because she personifies in every way what SUU is. She has set a new precedent on this campus that you can do anything you want, if you put forth the work and confront your fears.”

Now with her sparkly crown Garcia vows to make a difference on campus. Along with creating a women empowerment group, Garcia also wants to be a familiar face to everyone at SUU and be highly involved in all University events.

“In year’s past I have never seen Miss SUU past Homecoming week, I’m going to change that,” she said.

Being that familiar, welcoming face will be an easy goal to reach seeing that Garcia is involved with many groups on campus, including Delta Psi Omega Sorority, University Passport, Orientation, is the Chi Phi Fraternity sweetheart and is the president of the Bird Watching Association.

Research has found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed. Several studies show that people who have had a heart attack survive longer with a pet than without. Other studies have found that people with pets tend to have a speedier, easier recovery after illness or surgery.

Many of us have fond memories of our first childhood pet, and it seems pets are just as good for kids as they are for adults and elderly.

One five-year study found that children who are slow learners, or whose parents had divorced, had higher levels of self-esteem and better emotional functioning if they had a pet. Children with autism and other learning and behavioral disabilities often show immediate improvement when pets are brought into the classroom for animalassisted therapy.

Choosing a pet can be a difficult decision, but it can lead to one of the most exciting days of your life.

Make sure you do your homework, take time to look at how they behave, their temperament, and what lifestyle fits yours.

Here are some suggestions that will not only help your bank account, but also make your heart and mind happy: Pay yourself first. This concept comes from every financial genius out there. A great way to do this is to take 10% of your earnings and put it somewhere where you’re not easily tempted to spend it. It will be fun to see how quickly that will accumulate over time (and you won’t miss it).

Be charitable. There is a Universal law that what you give comes back. Even if you don’t have much money, there is always someone out there in more need than you are. You don’t necessarily have to give much – maybe the young lady in front of you in the checkout line is fifty cents short of her purchase of milk. Look for ways you can help someone else, and be amazed at the fun ways it comes back to you!

Be grateful. Even when you’re paying your bills, you can have thanks in your heart that you are able to meet your obligations. If your grocery bill looks too high – before you get discouraged, be grateful that you get to take a cartful of food home.

I hope this exercise proves to be helpful, fun, and empowering! I also hope it’s as “good as gold,” that you find a “sweetheart deal,” and that your tree starts to grow money.

Each year on average, we send 200,000 people to the hospital and have a hand in killing at least 23,000 (usually if they also develop complications such as pneumonia). Not to brag, but we are strong enough to render even a totally normal, healthy person gravely ill.

Next to the flu vaccine, good hand hygiene is one of your best defenses against us. If we linger on your hands and then you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, we get easy access.

We dread nothing more than the flu vaccine.

It’s the best way to ensure that we can’t wreak havoc. A vaccine provides your immune system with NSA-level intelligence to identify and eradicate us. There’s a vaccine for people who are allergic to eggs and, an extra-strength version for senior citizens. Yikes.

Is that Tamiflu you’re taking? Oh, no!

Antiviral drugs are our biggest enemy once we’ve succeeded in infecting you. They thwart our ability to keep reproducing, which means they can shorten the length of your illness. Lucky for us, though, there’s a brief ideal window in which to use these medications. They are most effective if you take them within the first 48 hours of having flu symptoms. If you wait too long, we can still run rampant.

We’re terrified of products labeled “disinfectant.”

This means they’ve been tested for their ability to kill viruses (like me). Cleaning products labeled sanitizer have to kill only bacteria.

Disinfectants can take a few minutes to kick in, so if you spray one on a surface and immediately wipe it off, chances are some of us viruses will survive.

Merely breathing spreads us.

You don’t have to sneeze or cough. A single breath can harbor thousands of us—and we can infect other people a full 24 hours before you exhibit symptoms.

If you’re obese, we can do a real number on you.

We’re up to three times more likely to kill someone who is obese than of normal weight. Extra weight may make the flu shot less effective too.

We love children.

They are our biggest spreaders. Kids’ immature immune systems take more time to fight us, so they shed more of us and for longer periods. Children are also delightfully unhygienic. If we infect one child, we likely gain entry to his immediate family and many of his classmates.

Dr. Scott Newbold on RSV

RSV season is upon us, causing special concern among parents of small children.

Short for respiratory syncytial virus, RSV can cause upper respiratory infections like colds, and lower respiratory tract infections like bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

Health & Wellness Individuals of any age can get RSV, but in adults and children over age two it generally causes mild cold symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov), almost all children will have had an RSV infection by their second birthday.

RSV can be more serious in infants and babies. In children under age one, RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis.

Between 0.5 and 2 percent of infants and small children who have signs or symptoms of bronchiolitis or pneumonia will require hospitalization.

“RSV generally begins like a regular cold,” said pediatrician Dr. Scott Newbold of Intermountain Cedar City Clinic. “Most kids start with symptoms that may include a cough, runny nose, fever, sleep apnea, or wheezing. We become most concerned about infants with RSV when they can’t maintain oxygen levels on their own.”

Most infants and children with RSV can be treated effectively at home. “The most effective course of treatment is suctioning the nose. I tell parents to get the biggest bulb syringe they can find. Put a few drops of water, breast milk, or saline in each nostril, wait a few seconds for the mucus to soften, and then use the bulb syringe to suction it out.” A cool mist humidifier may also help. “If you use a vaporizer, keep it far away from your baby to prevent burns,” warned Dr. Newbold.

Babies who still have difficulty breathing, who show signs of dehydration, who have ear pain, or who have a temperature of more than 102.5 degrees should be seen by a healthcare professional.

“Watch for signs that they are having difficulty breathing, including

flaring of the nostrils, a purple tinge around the mouth, extreme paleness, grunting at the end of every breath, or using extra muscles to help breathe.”

Your baby’s physician may refer you to the bronchiolitis clinic at Valley View Medical Center or Dixie Regional Medical Center.

Caregivers at the clinic can provide breathing treatments. They evaluate each child and make a treatment plan that may include a return visit in a few hours, or, if oxygen levels continue to be low, admission to the hospital. “The length of stay in the hospital is dictated by when the child no longer needs supplemental oxygen, and averages five days,” said Dr. Newbold. “Occasionally a child with RSV may need to be admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit or require a respirator.”

According to Dr. Newbold, “Most kids with bronchiolitis are worst on day four or five. Symptoms usually last between seven and ten days, but the virus can be transmitted for as long as three weeks after the symptoms go away.”

Hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of RSV and many of the other viruses that cause colds and respiratory infections.

“If your child has a fever, keep him or her away from other children.

Babies who are breastfed are less likely to get severe RSV, while premature infants and those who are exposed to tobacco smoke or who have asthma or other medical conditions are more fragile.”

While most children with RSV don’t need to be hospitalized, “Their care still requires a lot of work,” said Dr. Newbold. “Family doctors, pediatric clinics, and Intermountain bronchiolitis clinics and hospitals are here to help.”

Supporting Others Through Tragedy How to maintain a non-judgmental and compassionate viewpoint as a bystander About the Author

By Brent Black, MS, AMFT Tragic headlines like ‘Baby Left in Hot Car Dies,’ ‘Toddler Drowns in River,’ ‘Child in Driveway Run Over by Parents’ or ‘Bank Robbery, Kidnapping Ends in Fatal Shooting’ often evoke strong emotion and opinion. Online comments about such instances are frequently filled with outrage toward the seemingly careless parents.

Because these accounts hit close to home it can often be difficult to maintain a nonjudgmental and compassionate viewpoint.

Before adding another voice to charged commentary consider several points that will enhance kindness and understanding.

Anger is a Secondary Emotion For people who gravitate toward responding in anger it is helpful to understand that anger is a secondary emotion, in other words, anger stems from more basic emotions. Primary emotions, from which anger often stems, include emotions like sad, hurt, or scared. It is often the case that when individuals respond in anger they are really feeling sad, hurt, or scared. Expressions of anger carry a certain ‘wow factor’ that quickly leave an impression, but they are an easier and cheaper way of conveying what one really is feeling. It is easy to lash out in anger but harder to trace back the origin of anger and have heartfelt commentary where words like sad, hurt,

By Jonathan Decker, LMFT In 2005 one of my college buddies lost his mother to terminal illness. My heart broke for him; I was close with my mom and struggled to comprehend what it would be like if she died. Although I wanted to be there for him, I found myself frozen into inaction, intimidated by the enormity of his loss. I felt inadequate in the face of it.

Nothing I could say or do would take away the pain he was feeling. I didn’t know what he was going through by experience, and therefore felt that I had no place to give advice or comfort. So, to my shame, I did nothing, leaving the consoling to his closer friends and family while I sympathized from a distance.

The next year my own mother un­ expected­ly passed away, and the reality of my friend’s pain took on a terribly immediacy.

The tables were turned and I found myself on the receiving end of people’s awkward inability to approach the mourner. Perhaps they felt inadequate in the face of my loss. Maybe they thought that discussing anything “day-to-day” or “normal” with me might be insensitive. Whatever the reasons, the result was that I felt isolated when I most needed support.

how I was doing. He told them that they should ask me themselves and that I’d probably appreciate the connection. Still, many held back and it was a lonely time.

With new understanding, I called my other buddy, the one whose mother had died the year before, to apologize for leaving him out in the cold when he needed me. We had a great conversation and came to the same conclusion: we didn’t need anyone to “make it better.” We just needed them to openly care. We needed to not feel alone.

It really doesn’t take much. Sometimes, after condolences are expressed, mourners need to laugh, or to talk about something “normal.” It helps them to feel that their life will go on. Most importantly, remember that after the initial flood of support in the first few weeks and months, everyone else moves on while the mourner is often still grieving.

They will feel that absence for the rest of their life. This is not to say they’ll never feel joy or normalcy again, it’s just a reminder for the rest of us to check in once in a while.

We will all experience the pain of loss. We can also experience the hope and love that comes when we mourn with those that mourn and comfort those who stand in need of comfort.

Treating Vertebral Compression Fractures

By Dr. Rick Obray A vertebral compression fracture is a condition in which the vertebral body in the spine collapses, leading to severe pain and deformity. Often times the pain is so severe that patients will have a difficult time standing, walking or even rolling over in bed.

There are over 600,000 vertebral body compression fractures in the United States each year, many of which go untreated for weeks or months.

Osteoporosis is the most common cause of this condition, affecting an estimated 10 million Americans. An osteoporotic fracture occurs every three seconds in the United States. In addition, 34 million Americans have low bone mass, leaving these individuals with a higher risk of fracture.

Osteoporosis is not the only cause for a vertebral compression fracture. Other causes include severe trauma such as a car accident or sports injury, a metastatic tumor, and other degenerative processes .

In many cases, a compression fracture can lead to kyphosis.

This condition is when the spine has a curvature to its design, causing a bowing or rounding of the back. People with kyphosis often have a hunchback or a dramatic slouching posture. Treating vertebral body compression fractures early can reduce the overall compression deformity and reduce pain.

After a thorough examination, imaging procedures (bone density test, CT scan, MRI scan), and a review of the patient’s medical history, a physician can determine whether nonsurgical intervention can improve the patient’s condition. For conservative treatment, a back brace may be recommended to help restore posture and decrease the risk of more fractures. Physical therapy may be supplemented with medication therapy to relieve bone pain and inflammation.

If conventional measures show little improvements, advanced treatment is a possibility. One of the best surgical treatments for a vertebral compression fracture is a kyphoplasty. During this minimally invasive surgery, the physician attempts to restore the height of the vertebral body, as well as injects a bone cement into the vertebral body to stabilize the fracture, reduce pain and reduce the risk of further height loss. The procedure is performed through one or two 3mm incisions, and takes about 30-60 minutes to perform. Patients are able to go home within several hours. Pain relief can be immediate.

Medicare Open Enrollment – Coming Soon!

By Dale Bott For those who qualify for Medicare health insurance, open enrollment will be October 15th until December 7th, 2014. This is the time to review your current plan, make any changes needed, and review all of your current options. There are many choices and many things to consider. This process can be extremely confusing, but it doesn’t need to be. Here are some things to consider when making this very important decision: 1. Your personal heath and your family history. This is not a short term decision. Yes, Medicare Advantage and Part D (prescription) plans change every year, but when making your decision you want to look long term. health and the prescriptions you are currently taking. Common sense and looking honestly at your health and family history will dictate the majority of your decision, even more than cost.

2. Total cost. Many people use the monthly premium as the major factor of their decision, but this could be a huge mistake. You need to factor in all the costs and decide how much risk you want and how much risk to mitigate. Medical expenses are the leading cause for bankruptcies in Utah. So what are the other costs? a. D eductible – the dollar amount of the medical bill you have to cover before Medicare or your insurance will kick in. b. C o-Payment – the dollar amount you pay up front for a

service. For example, your physician’s office might collect a $20 “co-pay” when you come in to see the doctor. The amount is pre-determined by your insurance provider. c. Co-Insurance – the percentage you will be responsible for after Medicare and/or your insurance company pay their portion. d. Maximum out-of-pocket – this is your worst case scenario on the medical side. It’s the maximum you will pay in the year before the insurance company picks up everything Medicare-covered at 100% for the rest of the year. Original Medicare has no maximum out of pocket.

3. Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement. You can only choose one plan, so you will need to determine which fits your personal situation the best. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.

Sometimes husbands and wives will need to have different types of plans and/or be with different insurance companies.

4. Add-ons to Advantage or Supplement plans. To help mitigate risk, insurance companies offer supplemental plans like hospital indemnity, accident, and critical illness plans. These can offset deductibles and other medical expenses which may change your thoughts on what plan you really want to go with.

5. High Deductible option. Great option if you’re pretty healthy and want to keep costs low. The deductible is high but the premium (cost per month) is much lower than other plans.

6. Using an authorized independent agent.

It costs you nothing to use an agent, but it can cost you a lot if you don’t.

The Creators of Fry Sauce Turn 60 By the Cedar City Magazine staff and Paul Nelson, KSL.com (reprinted with permission) It was originally called “pink sauce,” and was something designed to go on burgers.

Sometime between 1941 and 1943, Chef Don Carlos Edwards dipped a fry in it. The rest, as they say, is history.

Edwards was so impressed with pink sauce on fries, he had his friends and customers sample it.

“They fell in love with it,” says Arctic Circle CEO Gary Roberts. “From that point on, anyone who had been there that day in history, who came into the restaurant, they asked if they could get some ‘fry sauce’ to dip their fries in.”

What’s in the mix?

Much more than just ketchup and mayonnaise. “We have a lot of other ingredients that we add to it, which are secret. We don’t share those with anybody,” he says.

Fry sauce love grows outside of Utah You may think fry sauce most popular in Utah, but that’s not necessarily the case.

Arctic Circle now goes through 168 gallons of fry sauce every day and has an awards banquet every year, and where they give awards for stores that sell the most of certain, specific products, one of which is [bottles of ] fry sauce. The store that won it the last year was Newport, Oregon.

Roberts says he still gets letters from people who no longer live in Utah who want to find where they can buy the famous mixture.

Fry sauce, Green Jell-O, Funeral Potatoes and Other Utah Food Folklore

By Cedar City Magazine Staff and Natalie Crofts, KSL.com (reprinted with permission) PROVO – With foods like green Jell-O, fry sauce and funeral potatoes, Utah has its own distinct food culture.

Eric Eliason, a Brigham Young University professor, is working on a book about the folklore behind some of Utah’s more unique foods. Scones, fry sauce and other treats have come to be seen as an identity marker that binds people together, he said.

“Everybody in Utah, regardless of who you are, recognizes fry sauce as a Utah thing — it’s not a Mormon thing, it’s a Utah thing,” he said. “So it’s kind of a ecumenical bridge, if you will, that all Utahns can feel connected to.”

Within the state, there are also regional specialties. Bear Lake is famous for raspberries, Sanpete has its own special basting recipe and St. George boasts a Dixie Salad (a mixture of pomegranates, raisins,

apples and topped with whipped cream and chopped almonds).

One food many people associate with Utah is green Jell-O, often with vegetables or meat in it. Eliason said many people think adding savory ingredients is odd, but that it can be explained by the history of Jell-O marketing. When Jell-O was first introduced, it was originally served with meat. Later it was served as a salad on a bed of lettuce before becoming the desert many know today.

And no ones list would complete without including funeral potatoes, a casserole that usually consists of hash browns, cheese, onions, cream soup, and is topped with butter and corn flakes. There are probably as many variations of this dish as there are families in Utah.

Eliason, who is a transplant to Utah, said

he has also been investigating whether or not thick shakes are an iconic Utah food.

He said many people within the state have told him the shakes aren’t anything special, but that tourists and people who move from other states usually think they are different from the norm.

Every time his brother comes to visit from Virginia, he wants to get what he calls a “Utah shake,” which means a thick shake that comes up over the top.

The book is still in the early stages of development, but will include recipes and pictures in addition to histories about each of Utah’s distinctive foods when it is published. The University of Utah Press has plans to publish it, and Eliason hopes it will be available for purchase through the Amazon bookstore and other outlets.

By Regan Archibald, L.Ac, CSSAc. MSOM It is estimated that we use only 10% of our brain’s capacity. If you are like me then you have had foggy days where using 10% seems like a very high percentage. Our brains comprise about 2% of our bodyweight, but use at least 20% of the electrical energy in our bodies. Interestingly, our brain’s energy use increases to 25% when we are sleeping.

So how can you keep this incredibly vital organ functioning at its best? From what I can see, the key to having healthy brain function is to give your brain an optimal energy supply. Most would argue 36 www.cedarcitymag.com

that the brain needs glucose as its optimal energy source but what we are finding is that only a small portion of your brain needs sugar. What the brain actually prefers are ketones from fat as its energy source.

For those of you wanting to optimize your brain performance, not to mention decrease inflam­ ma­tion in your gut and heart, you need to eat more fat from butter. Many of you are probably thinking “butter is bad for me because it is full of saturated fat.” I thought the same thing, until I did some research on how to optimize brain function and butter kept coming up as the superior brain food.

Butter is now considered by many to be the new “superfood,” even though it has been used for at least 4,500 years. How did we get so far removed from fat? One of the early campaigns against fat began when Dwight Eisenhower was diagnosed with heart disease in 1955. His team of scientists and doctors, including the snit-fat crusader, Ancel Keys concluded that saturated fat and butter caused his chronic disease.

The then President was put on a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet of dry toast and Sanka for breakfast and only one egg per week, even though his total cholesterol was 165 ml/dl at the time of his heart attack. Even with his strict dietary program Eisenhower’s total cholesterol continued to rise up to 259 ml/dl the day he left office. He was also diagnosed with Crohn’s disease (or ileitis) on May 10th, 1956 and Eisenhower continued to have several more heart attacks and eventually died of heart disease even with his new diet.

Ideally you will eat 50-70% of your calories from healthy fats, 2025% from healthy proteins and 20-25% from healthy carbohydrates.

Fruits and small amounts of starches need to be consumed in the evening if you want to keep your body in fat-burning mode.

The first step in any new process is to try it out for yourself. I’m sure that you will appreciate the way that butter makes you feel and most of us agree that we like the taste!
