From The Publisher The Dog Days of Summer As the days gets hotter and hotter we sometimes begin to look forward to the cooler days of fall, and you sometimes hear people talk about the “dog days of summer.” Did you ever wonder where that phrase came from? I did, and so I did a little research and this is what I found.

Hopefully you are all enjoying the harvest of fresh produce from your family “victory garden.” This is the time your efforts begin to pay off.

Years ago people used to believe that the “dog days” were the part of the year when dogs, driven to distraction by the heat, were most likely to “go mad.”

This is supposed to be the quiet, lazy days of summer, but it may actually be as busy as any other time of year.

The origin of the term actually dates back to the Egyptians and Romans and is named after the star Sirius, the brightest star in the heavens, which is also known as the Dog Star. A nickname in honor of the Egyptian God named Osirus, whose head resembled that of a dog.

We hope that you will take advantage of the time left this summer and spend some fun, meaningful time together as family and friends.

• Go to the Iron County Fair, and if the “fair bug” hits you, go experience the State Fair in Salt Lake or one of the other close county fairs in the area.

For around 20 days at the end of summer, Sirius actually rises and sets with the sun, so the Egyptians and Romans concluded that Sirius added its heat to the sun and made things extra hot… hence, the name “dog days of summer.”

• Follow the grilling tips you will find inside and have a BBQ.

Instead, it is the tilt of the Earth that causes the sun’s light to hit the Northern Hemisphere at a more direct angle, and for a longer period of time throughout the day. This means longer, hotter days during the summer.

•S pend an evening at home playing games and enjoying each other’s company.

Here in Southern Utah it also means family reunions, vacations, baseball, rodeos, soccer, football practice, back to school, and hunting season to name just a few.

• Plan a picnic and go on an afternoon hike.

• Take a trip up on the mountain and see the wildlife and flowers.

The Wonder of the

Dark Night Sky

By Kenzie Lundberg, Cedar City • Brian Head Tourism Bureau As one of the last places in the United States where dark night skies are accessible in the backyard and viewing the Milky Way is a regular occurrence, Southern Utah is a prime spot for stargazing.

Due to light pollution, approximately two-thirds of the United States will never see the Milky Way unless they travel to a remote place. Light pollution from urban areas is taking its toll on the night sky; it is inhibiting astronomy, disturbing animals and ecosystems, affecting humans and disconnecting us from the nature. Stray light has become so dominant in some areas that it is becoming difficult for residents to remember what the night sky looks like.

According to Megan Finnerty, a reporter from the The Arizona Republic, “Scientists estimate that in about 10 years, America will have only three dark patches of land where people will be able to clearly see the Milky Way and where they’ll be able to do high-quality astronomy and nocturnal wilderness research.” Western Utah is one of them. Now is the time to take advantage of the amazing experience waiting in Southern Utah’s backyard.

Named one of the 10 great places to stargaze by USA Today, Cedar Breaks National Monument is the place to fully experience the wonder of a dark night. To celebrate and educate others on the importance of our dark night skies, Cedar Breaks hosts Star Parties each Saturday night through Labor Day. This is a unique opportunity to participant in a constellation tour, telescope viewing through several large telescopes and interact with the astronomy volunteers at the park. The Southern Utah Space Foundation is bringing astronomy to the Southern Utah community with free events that are open to everyone, typically held at Three Peaks Recreation Area. This fall they have four events scheduled that offer the opportunity to view the night sky through telescopes, learn about astronomy and ask the experts questions: S’mores and Mercury (Sept. 5 at 7:30 pm), Stars, S’mores & Uranus (Oct. 10 at 8:00 pm) and Orionid Meteor Shower (Oct. 21 at 8:00 pm). On the night of August 12, there are two chances to see one of the best sky shows of the year, the Perseid Meteor Shower. The stage will be set with an almost dark moon and a very dark sky. At Cedar Breaks National Monument, the Star Party begins at 9:00 pm; bring a lounge chair, a blanket, and a hot drink to enjoy the show! Or stay in the valley and join the Southern Utah Space Foundation at 8:00 pm at Three Peaks Recreation Area for the meteor show, telescope viewing, marshmallow roasting and fun. The shower peaks after midnight on the night of August 12th, when as many as 40 meteors per hour can be seen, so be prepared for cooler weather and bring a jacket or blanket.

HIKING SOUTHERN UTAH’S

Hiking in Scenic Southern Utah is a great way to explore the region and experience the beautiful scenery off the beaten path. There’s everything from arches, waterfalls, ancient forests, narrow canyons and majestic overlooks. Trails range from an easy walk to challenging overnight excursions. Always be prepared with plenty of water, good hiking shoes, cell phone, maps, sun-screen and plenty of time. Always tell someone where you are going.

This issue’s spotlight hike is to Cascade Falls.

It is an easy to moderate 1 mile roundtrip hike that takes approximately 1 hour to complete and is best done during the summer months and thru the fall season. The trail has uneven surfaces and is subject to temporary closures, so it is best to call ahead and verify that it is open. The phone number is 435-865-3700.

The trail leads to a beautiful waterfall that is the outlet of Navajo Lake. You will see incredible views of the Zion/Kolob Terrace.

To get to the trailhead in the Dixie National Forest – travel east from Cedar City on Hwy U-14 for 25 miles. Turn right at the Navajo Lake junction, then left and follow the Forest Service Road to the trailhead parking area.

So, grab your family or some friends, pack a lunch and spend a quiet afternoon enjoying the beautiful scenery that is all around us.

Hiking Tips:

1. Tell someone where you are going.

2. Get detailed maps and information from the Dixie National Forest or the National Park Service.

3. Take plenty of water.

4. Pack out all trash.

5. No fires.

6. Check weather conditions before embarking on your journey.

A Healthy Dose of Back-to-School

Anxiety

By Brent Black, MS, LMFTA As a family therapist, I often meet with parents who want to know if their child has anxiety and my quick response is, “I hope so!” Today the mere mention of the word anxiety tends to induce stomach knots, racing hearts, and cold sweats. However, a proper dosage of anxiety is a key component for healthy and successful children. On the other hand, excessive anxiety and the absence of anxiety are debilitating. Since the launching of school can also launch levels of anxiety for many students, here are a few points for parents to consider as they look forward to a successful year.

Too Much Anxiety The better question about anxiety is “does my child have excessive anxiety?” All healthy individuals experience at least some anxiety, but excessive levels of anxiety can lead to harmful behaviors. In order to diagnose an individual with Generalized Anxiety Disorder they must meet certain criteria: • Excessive anxiety or worry (more days than not for at least 6 months) • Difficulty controlling the worry • Restlessness • Fatigue • Difficulty concentrating • Irritability • Muscle tension These symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, educational or other significant areas of functioning. So, a helpful question in determining excessive anxiety is, “has my child been significantly impaired for an extended amount of time in important areas of their life because of the anxiety that they feel?”

The beginning of the school year is a fitting time for parents to consider the possibility that their actions might be creating additional anxiety. One parental trend that often leads children to experience greater anxiety is an excessive family emphasis on achievement. Children who feel like they have to achieve in order to win the approval and respect of their parents are often filled with anxiety. Their motivation for achieving becomes less about personal growth and more about fear of letting parents down.

Not Enough Anxiety The opposite of anxiety is apathy or carelessness. Children who are apathetic give off a vibe of indifference, laziness, boredom, and unconcern. Faces are unflinching and tones are flat. The default response for many questions is simply, “I don’t know.” There is not an official term of diagnosis to describe these characters but they are easily identifiable.

One parental trend that could lead a child toward apathy is a parent who is inconsistent, indifferent, and un-opinionated about their child’s 12 www.cedarcitymag.com

success. I see exceptions to this trend, but I am often unsurprised by a child’s apathy after meeting both parents and understanding that a child is simply following the example of at least one of the parents. In these cases the apple really doesn’t fall that far from the tree.

Brent also helps couples seeking to enhance communication, overcome patterns of conflict, and experience greater intimacy.

Achieving the Right Amount of Anxiety So as a parent, what can you do to help your children have the proper amount of anxiety? One of the best ways to help kids have a healthy level of anxiety is by maintaining high expectations while also assuring children both verbally and nonverbally that parental love is not dependent on child outcomes. In other words, parents need to convey that regardless of achievement level, their children will always be genuinely loved.

One of the main ways that parents can increase the anxiety level of their apathetic children is to get actively involved. Parents who sincerely check-in and follow-up with their children are likely to see the kind of anxiety that will help motivate their children to succeed.

Although anxiety is often viewed in a negative light, a healthy dose of anxiety helps children to be successful.

Of concern are children who are experiencing excessive anxiety or no anxiety at all. Great parents are those who feel appropriate anxiety about helping their children to be balanced in their anxiety.

She and her partner Misty May were legitimate contenders to win, and they immediately legitimized this “new” way to tape. Soon, we saw it being used in other sports. It was called kinesiology tape.

Although kinesiology tape had been around since the 1970s, it’s really finding its footing when used in a Fascial Movement Taping protocol.

Fascial tissue, or fascia, is an important soft tissue found throughout the body. It works as a support and structural tissue that gives form and shape to the muscles of the body, compartmentalizing groups of muscle from others. As fascial tissue spreads out over the body’s muscular landscape, facial planes develop. When the body is in motion, a certain “relative” motion between structures exists. When it doesn’t, strain can develop in the tissue leading to cumulative trauma disorders such as strain/sprain.

Fascial Movement Taping is a comprehensive framework of taping for each phase of need, from reducing swelling in an acute injury to helping outcomes in the rehabilitation phase of care. It is also an adjunct to training or competitive performance and recovery.

Kinesiology tape, known as K-Tape, is different from traditional types of sports tape in the fact that it stretches along its length (but not its width), allowing it to contour around body parts and move through a full range of motion. Traditional sports tapes limit movement, while kinesiology tape is applied to encourage movement. It can stretch from 130% to 180% along its length, depending on the brand.

Rock Tape was initially developed to stretch longer and stick better than any other brand. It became immediately popular amongst cross 14 www.cedarcitymag.com

fit athletes as well as triathletes and extreme sports events athletes.

The tapes elastic nature not only allows for more movement but also allows for a “Snapback” or recoil effect, which is important in the context of movement. Additionally, it can stay on for up to 5 days or longer.

Kinesiology tape effectively decompresses the skin and the underlying tissues to which it is applied. This relieves pressure from the underlying nerve endings that are responsible for sending pain impulses to the brain. Its decompressing action allows for better circulation to and from the taped area. This reduces swelling and contributes to movement performance and recovery effects seen in athletes. A study using functional MRI showed more areas of the sensory cortex of the brain are stimulated when subjects had tape applied to the knee during movement.

Common conditions that are helped by fascial taping are sprains/ strains, tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, spinal and neurological irritation as well as scar tissue revision. The control of swelling and bruising has shown to respond amazingly well to fascial taping by decompressing the skin and the underlying tissues, and the neurological effect the tape produces allows for proper movement, assisting the body’s natural pumping action. Assisting normal movement in an acute phase while assisting the body’s lymphatic system to work better can possibly shorten a person’s healing time. Studies have shown that kinesiology taping is as effective as wearing compression wraps in reducing swelling in an area. In cases where patients have had lymph node removal during certain surgeries, the resultant lymphedema responded favorably to kinesiology tape.

When should my child have their first eye exam?

We recommend that a child’s first exam happen between six and twelve months of age, and then every other year after that, as a rule of thumb.

How often should my child return to the eye doctor?

Vision development happens early, so detecting threats to normal vision during those first months and years can eliminate many vision and learning problems later. Some problems are difficult, if not impossible to fix as the child matures and leaves the developmental stage behind.

Bottom Line When the United States Women’s Soccer Team beat Japan in the 2015 World Cup Final it became the highest-rated television broadcast of a soccer game in the U.S. Yet, it when came to studying the following of the Women’s National Soccer League the numbers are lower than their male counterparts, or any male sport.

David Berri, SUU professor of economics has been researching the effects of women’s sports and the reason it lags in fan base. In a recent Times article, he reported what it will take for women’s sports to grow.

“The major professional sports leagues for women are in their infancy,” said Berri in his Times article. “Professional women’s basektball, baseball and soccer have a short history, been around for less than 20 years. To expect a league that is this young to have the fan following we see in more mature sports leagues is unrealistic.”

He went on to say, “A fan has to make the investment of time to get to know the players. In sports, familiarity

Berri is certain women’s sports fandom will increase as leagues develop and is just one of the many sports focused research he concentrates on.

“To expect a league that is this young to have a fan following we see in more mature sports leagues is unrealistic.” a field that Berri didn’t know existed when he entered academia at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

“When I was a graduate student I was looking for a research topic for a paper I was writing,” he said. “And I couldn’t think of anything I was really interested in and there was a footnote in this book I was reading that talk-

ed about measuring the economic contribution of a baseball player. And that was the first time I had heard you could apply economics to sports.”

Berri originally started his career by writing about baseball and basketball economics, which eventually led him to writing about a variety of topics in sports. He has now written more than 50 articles on sports economics.

He often appears on national television to comment on economic issues with sports, most recently appearing on MSNBC’s Sports Matters. This summer Berri has appeared in a slew of national publications including Vice Sports and Deseret News, among many others.

Berri is the co-author of The Wages of Win and Stumbling on Wins: Two Economists Expose the Pitfalls on the Road to Victory in Professional Sports and continues to serve on the editorial board of both the Journal of Sports Economics and the International Journal of Sport Finance.

Red Rocks and the Wooden O

William Shakespeare, in the prologue to Henry V, referred to the stage as an “unworthy scaffold.” In the early days of Elizabethan theatre, traveling troupes would erect crude scaffolds and place planks over them to create a quick stage. In 1962, with its inaugural performance of The Taming of the Shrew, the Utah Shakespeare Festival continued this tradition—rolling out construction materials and production equipment in the summer and taking them down at the close of the season. However, by 1969 the ravages of time and the elements were obvious. An increasing amount of money and effort was spent each year in repairing or replacing parts of the stage. After a decade of operation, the Festival needed a permanent home. This new theatre, nestled within the red rocks of Southern Utah and soon to be named the Adams Memorial Shakespearean Theatre, would launch the Festival into a new era of production and itself would be a character in every performance. The “unworthy scaffold” would become the “Wooden O” for this young Shakespeare company.

Douglas N. Cook had joined the Festival in 1964. While teaching drama at the University of California at Riverside, he had heard of the new Shakespeare festival in Cedar City from his friend Michael Addison, and he became intrigued. Addison had worked as a director for the Festival in 1963, and recognized that Cook would be a strong addition to the creative team.

Festival founder Fred C. Adams welcomed Cook with open arms. Cook was especially

adept at designing scenery for Shakespeare productions. Under Cook’s guidance, the props department blossomed, and the sets better reflected the periods that designers were trying to represent. At the conclusion of the 1969 season, Doug and his wife, Joan, decided to remain in Cedar City for a few more weeks while Doug applied his talent for design to work up some rough sketches for a new outdoor theatre space.

Cook had been doing research into the major elements of many Elizabethan theatres.

While no blueprints of Shakespeare’s Globe existed, many other designs of similar spaces were available. During the company’s first ten years, Adams and the Festival production teams had experimented with various stage locations and had discovered the most desirable spot. With the location settled, Cook was able to design the new theatre to fit within very specific dimensions.

Based upon his research, Cook knew that the new theatre would need to have three essential elements. First, it must have a thrust stage (this meant that the performance space would be surrounded on three sides by seats); second, it must have a gallery or multi-level seating; and, third, it must be open to the air. All of these designs were in every major Elizabethan theatre of Shakespeare’s day and would be necessary for the Festival’s new space. Cook and Adams understood that the space defines the play, that producing the works of Shakespeare in a space similar to that in which they would have originally been performed would assist in transporting

the audience into another world. This theatre would become a character itself. Everything the Utah Shakespeare Festival had learned about producing the Bard would go into the design of the theatre.

With designs in hand, Adams now began the search for financial support. In an early proposal to the College of Southern Utah (now Southern Utah University), Adams argued that the new theatre could be used for a variety of purposes, including “band concerts, dance reviews, lectures, road show competitions, out-of-door movies, school assemblies, Easter sunrise services, pep rallies, astronomy classes, and commencement.”

Although the college agreed with the need for a space like the one Adams proposed, they could not meet the financial needs of the project.

Adams then turned to private funding sources. He achieved success when three generous donors, Dr. Obert C. and Grace Adams Tanner, Sadie Barnard, and Dean B. Eggertson agreed to fund the bulk of the project. Additionally, the theatre would now be dedicated to the parents of Mrs. Tanner, Thomas and Luella Adams, and be known as the Adams Memorial Shakespeare Theatre—lovingly referred to now as the Adams Theatre.

Under the direction of Max Anderson, an architect for the State of Utah building board, who worked on the project on a pro bono basis, the outdoor theatre began to take shape. The theatre would be constructed in continued on page 22 Cedar City Magazine | August/September 2015 21

continued from page 22 phases, beginning with the tiring house and then the seating area. Technical and electrical planning also factored heavily into the design of the Adams Theatre. Cameron Harvey (later a producing director at the Festival) worked tirelessly to design a state-of-theart lighting and sound system that would be unnoticeable to the audience but enhance the performance. The technical and physical design of the Adams Theatre would help establish it as one of the most talked about theatres in the country.

In 1977, the Adams Theatre was complete. The tiring house had been finished a few years earlier; and, despite being called upon to remove the construction scaffolding just forty-five minutes before the first performance, the actors loved the new stage.

Utah Shakespeare Festival guests soon fell in love with the new space and validated its existence with sold out performances. In 1981, the British Broadcasting Company searched the world for a proper space to produce a series of theatre programs and found the Adams Theatre to be a perfect

spot to focus on the Elizabethan period of world theatre. They added further acclaim by announcing “there’s not a theatre like this in England, Asia, or Europe.”

Tragedy nearly befell the Utah Shakespeare Festival when on February 25, 2000, fire consumed much of the light and sound booth and part of the roof of the Adams Theatre. The blaze was quickly contained and the damage was repaired by opening night in June. The theatre had escaped the fate of Shakespeare’s original Globe Theatre, which was completely destroyed by fire during a production of Henry VIII in 1613. Most recently, in 2011, the Adams Theatre hosted its first ever live broadcast. In partnership with BYUtv, the Utah Shakespeare Festival sent its production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream over the airwaves. This collaboration, which lead to an Emmy Award for BYUtv, further cemented the Festival and the Adams Theatre’s place in the popular culture of Utah.

Now, like a great battleship, the Adams Theatre is soon to be decommissioned. The mighty “Wooden O” has served its purpose in enriching, entertaining, and educating the lives of those who sat in her seats and

witnessed her bounty. Like the stage before, the passage of time and changing technology have taken their toll. The new Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre is already rising and a new “Wooden O” will stand guard over the works of the Bard and serve as an anchor for the Utah Shakespeare Festival’s future. The Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre will provide an amazingly rich theatrical experience for Utah Shakespeare Festival audiences. While preserving the character and up close and personal style of the Adams Theatre, the Engelstad Theatre will be located closer to the Randall L. Jones Theatre, have additional restrooms (always a plus), and be ADA accessible. This new theatre is the next step in further elevating the capacity of the Utah Shakespeare Festival to continually produce artistic, relevant, and meaningful productions of William Shakespeare’s work.

Hundreds of thousands of people have made the Adams Theatre part of their story and hundreds of thousands more will discover Shakespeare and themselves at the Engelstad Theatre. If William Shakespeare is to be believed that “what’s past is prologue,” an amazing future it will be.

By Cedar City Magazine Staff As the Beehive State, Utah has an historic connection with bees and honey.

The last few years have seen an increasing interest in beekeeping as well as other backyard hobbies such as planting gardens, home canning, and raising chickens.

Taking care of backyard bees can be a fun and rewarding hobby, but before jumping in, it would be wise to do your homework because there is more to it than one would realize. However, most beekeepers will tell you that once you have tasted your own honey, you will not want to purchase ordinary store-bought honey again.

Although there are numerous insects, birds and mammals that provide pollination services, by far most of the world’s pollination is done by bees. Gwen Crist of Slow Foods Utah, estimates that one of every three bites of food we eat is dependent on pollination provided by bees. That includes fruit and nut trees, melons, vegetables and field crops such as alfalfa.

Kim, Sharisa, Hanna 6, Megan 5, In 2006, a mysterious phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder Carte 2, Maxine 1 began to occur, where worker bees abruptly disappeared from their hives, leaving the hive to die. Beekeepers began reporting losses of 30 to 90 percent of their hives, and with more than half of all bee colonies being hired during the year to pollinate the country’s food supply, the loss of bees became critical. We can only begin to imagine the truly global impact that losing our honeybees would have on our daily lives.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture now estimates that the number of managed honey beehives is half of what it was in the 1950’s.

The amount of beekeepers is also down considerably, and most beekeepers today are hobbyists with less than 25 hives.

In an effort to monitor the bee population and to assist local beekeepers, all persons who keep bees in the state of Utah are required to obtain a license from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, even if you have just one hive. The current cost of the license ranges from $10 - $50 per individual/business, depending on the number of hives you have.

“IT HURTS!”

With the popularity and growth of beekeeping in Utah, I have been wanting to do this article for a long time. With September being the month most of the honey is harvested here in Southern Utah, I knew the timing was right.

So I went and visited Kim Lovell, my nephew, a local beekeeper in Parowan and discussed the possibility of doing this article. He isn’t one to talk a lot and he said he could sum up his beekeeping experience with two words, “IT HURTS! It really does hurt when you get stung.” I told him we needed a little more information than that for an article, but that would be a good start.

Just like most wives when we (their husbands) come up with a wild idea, Sharisa had no idea what she was getting into when her husband was given that first single beehive from a friend.

It all started out so innocently, she says. Kim found out that he liked it, and so he started to study and learn what it would take to be a “real” beekeeper. He would spend 2-3 hours a night reading, watching you-tube videos, and talking to everyone he could so he could learn what he was supposed to be doing.

They had decided early on in their marriage that they would not use any personal money to fund a business, and Kim had found that becoming a beekeeper was not the cheapest hobby around. The national average cost to start a new hive is in the $300 per hive range, so he started working at the lumber yard at night to support his new found hobby. He had the hopes that he could work hard and raise enough money to pay for some extracurricular activities for his kids and family.

Well, fast forward five years from that fateful day and the entire family is now part of “Lovell Honey, LLC,” a company that hopes to produce 2,000 pounds of raw wildflower honey this season. Kim is now a “full-fledged, self-taught” beekeeper. That one hive has turned into 125 and he has visions of having 200, not bad for a part time job.

They keep their hives in the fields from Parowan to Paragonah, except for a 6 week trip to California in January to take advantage of the mild winter weather and the almond blossoms there. This also gives the bees a head start on preparing to produce when they get back to Utah.

This small town farm boy (he grew up in Sutherland, a northwestern suburb of Delta, Utah, with a population of 165 in the 2010 census) who hates the big cities of California, now finds himself watching the weather forecast

and praying for rain to end the drought there.

Unlike many of us, he is keenly aware of the fact that if there are no almond trees in California, he may not have bees in Parowan in the summertime, and that means no honey for the rest of us in September.

Most of us take honey for granted, and don’t realize that one of every three bites of food that we eat depends on the pollination of bees.

With the increase in popularity of beekeeping in Utah, “there are always people calling him and wanting to go with him and see what it’s all about,” Kim says. He then proceeded to tell me that raising bees is a great way to lose friends; you see, “everyone wants to be a beekeeper—until they get stung a time or two.”

When it was time to leave, it had been a great afternoon, catching up with family and learning why beekeeping is becoming so popular and why it is important. The more we talked, the more I wanted to put on a suit and go with him sometime, but... I think I will leave the fun to Kim and his family and come back in September and get a gallon or two of pure raw honey without the possibility of getting stung.

Tips for Planting Trees

• Don’t skip the prep: Do cool down soil by shading for a few days and moistening so seeds have a chance.

• Select a variety that’s a shorter number of days to maturity than its peers, or rated for late-season growing.

• Count back from frost date but add extra time to the calculation, since days are getting gradually shorter and cooler as fall plants mature. Don’t expect them to produce as fast as in warming, lengthening springtime days.

• As cold arrives, have insulating fabric (and hoops in some cases) ready.

• The later timing may slow things and require a little extra help, perhaps, but it’s also a benefit: Often you outsmart pests, who might be done multiplying, and some crops (greens, peas, crucifers) may taste sweeter when ripening in cool weather.

Planting for Over-Wintering In order to have some vegetables mature earlier in the spring, a good method is to plant in the fall and over-winter the young seedlings. Onions, carrots, and spinach are good examples and should be planted as follows: Carrots: September 10-15; Onions, August 1-15; and Spinach, September 15-25.

1. September: This is the month, buy and plant trees, shrubs and perennials.

2. M ore trees die from being over watered than under watered in Utah. Make sure to know how much water your variety of tree needs.

3. J ust because your tree is native, doesn’t mean it can survive without water.

Watering is especially important in a tree’s first few years in the landscape when it is getting established.

4. Know the correct depth to plant your tree. Plant no deeper than where the roots begin to flair to avoid disease.

5. S elect trees with deep root systems to avoid the need to water frequently.

Water your tree for longer periods but less often to promote the growth of deep roots.

6. P lanting anything -- from grass to flowers – around the base of a tree only creates a competition for water resources.

Rodeo High School

A Part of Life Since 1949

The National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) was created in Texas in 1949, and is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship and the character in the youth of our country by providing them with the opportunity to participate and compete in the sport of rodeo. The NHSRA is one of the fastest growing youth organizations in the country with over 10,500 current members from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. The association sanctions over 1,100 rodeos each year.

A Junior High School Division was created in 2004, to bring the excitement of the sport to even younger students. Today, all 48 states and provinces that belong to the NHSRA also produce a Junior High Division as well, with over 2,500 members in total now competing.

The Utah High School Rodeo Association (UHSRA) was organized in 1961, and produces 37 high school rodeos around the state in the fall and spring of each year.

There are approximately 600-700 members statewide. Each year, UHRSA State Finals Rodeos are held in Heber City with the top contestants in each event qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo in either the High School (NHSFR) or Junior High School (NJHSRA) divisions. The NHSFR

is the “World’s Largest Rodeo,” featuring approximately 1,500 contestants (the Junior High School division has approximately 1,000 participants) from across the United States, Canada and Australia. Athletes vie for national titles, assorted prizes and their share of over $200,000 in college scholarships.

We can be proud of our local athletes as TEAM UTAH has finished within the top 6 every year since 1996. In fact, they have won eight national championships, three runnerups, and includes 56 national champions.

This past June, 13 year old TJ and his 12 year old brother Blake Bowler of Enterprise competed in the 11th annual NJHFR, and took home the title of 2015 Team Roping Champions. Texas had won this title every year since its inception in 2004, until this year! Congratulations boys!

On any given weekend in the spring and fall you can find them… loaded into the truck, usually pulling a horse trailer and traveling somewhere. Somewhere between Logan and St. George and Grantsville and Vernal. Who are they? Utah High School Rodeo athletes and their families headed to another rodeo.

As a member of the Utah High School Rodeo Association, the locations may change but you can count on participating in a rodeo just about every Friday and Saturday (31 rodeos in fact), hoping to earn enough points to qualify for the State Finals in Heber City in June of each year.

As a high school rodeo athlete, you are unique, you are special!

You are part of the National High School Rodeo Association.

Although not recognized by high school athletics, the NHSRA offers a program that sets itself apart from other varsity sports-governing itself without supervision of school administrations or monetary assistance from tax dollars. Your absences to participate in a rodeo are not excused and you must pay your own entry fees... every week. There are no school buses to take you to your events; in fact, you and your family will travel anywhere from 7,000 – to 10,000 miles each year and spend from $300-500 each weekend so that you can participate.

As one of the 15 students/athletes from Cedar, Canyon View and Parowan High Schools that make up Cedar Rodeo Club (a club that has been around for over 30 years), you join hundreds of other students from all over the state of Utah. You are part of one of the most successful state associations in the country. In Utah, we love

our rodeos and we especially love our high school rodeos.

TEAM UTAH has won 8 National Championships, including this year, where they captured both the Junior High and High School National Championships. Team Utah has finished in the top six every year since 1996.

Just like other sports, rodeo requires hours of practice.

It is not unusual for a rodeo athlete to spend 3-4 hours a day in the arena. To be able to compete on a weekly basis with some of the best rodeo athletes in the country requires hours and hours of practice and hard work. There are many things that can be learned by participating in high school sports: discipline, teamwork, and love of competition just to name a few. In addition to these, the rodeo athlete also develops a love of and respect for animals.

What is it that makes rodeo so unique? In the words of Larry Mahan, (a six time World All-Around Champion cowboy I watched in the Lion’s Dixie Sun Bowl in St. George as a young boy), “I truly believe it is an event that brings folks together to celebrate our Western culture! A culture that rewards excellence, hard work, sacrifice, independence, self-reliance, determination, and honor.

Add the Lord, family values and a community spirit to the mix, and you’ve got an unbeatable combination of America at her finest.”

And I’ll add it is a family affair, a BIG family affair. Traveling to rodeos all over the state, you meet other people doing the same thing and over time friendships are made. True friendships, friendships that get stronger with each year of rodeos and that last long after the last rodeo is concluded. In fact, one mother told me that as her son left to serve an LDS mission, approximately half of those attending his farewell were rodeo competitors and their families from outside her hometown.

Time – Family Time is another unique feature of High School Rodeo. Somewhere, along the way I heard someone say that wives and children spell Love – TIME. If that is the case, then rodeo is the sport we all should be involved in. Where else can you, on a weekly basis, seatbelt your teenage kids in a car/truck with you for 6 hours at a time (time from Cedar City to Vernal)? What a great opportunity to talk to, teach, and share your children’s lives.

Each of the rodeos are sponsored and produced by the various clubs around the state. Our Cedar City Club will be hosting their rodeos on Friday and Saturday, September 25 - 26, 2015.

This is a major undertaking as over 500 contestants will come to Cedar City. An event of this magnitude requires a herculean effort by many people. If it wasn’t for the generous financial support of the club’s corporate sponsors and the help of many volunteers, the rodeo simply would not happen. Club secretary, Janette Stubbs, told me that some of the local volunteers have been helping out every year since the club was formed over 30 years ago.

Again, in the words of Larry Mahan, “It’s rodeo time and this is who WE are!”

A ‘midway’ of tradition and change

By Robert Reed Fairs are as much a part of American life as baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. They have withstood the test of time and continue to impact modern America.

All together more than 3,200 fairs are held in the United States and Canada every year.

Taken collectively the crowds are significant.

The top 59 fairs in this country attract more than 44 million people annually, a figure said to rival the number of fans at all major league baseball games combined.

“The mission of fairs are typically twofold,” says Barnes. “To serve youth and promote the goals of 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) and to promote the community itself, and its cultural affairs and diversity.”

The concept of the local fair can be traced back to Biblical times when promotion of the town’s marketplace was incorporated into religious observances. During the Middle Ages fairs came under the regulation of regional officials and churches became gradually less involved.

“The government of New Netherland authorized the first annual fair in America in 1641,” and was held at a location now known as New York City. By the middle of the 18th century, fairs were a common event throughout the American colonies. They were primarily agricultural in theme, and gave rural families an opportunity to see firsthand the latest agricultural techniques, equipment, crops and livestock.

Small fairs dominated the early 19th century and were known as “mostly local or county-wide affairs.”

Some of the first state fairs were held during the 1840s. In the years following the Civil War, fairs in general and state fairs in particular began further stressing 30 www.cedarcitymag.com

By the 1880s, county fairs had fallen into a nationwide pattern of being staged each year in fields on the outskirts of town. Besides farm produce, the fairs usually included competition involving homemade foods such as fruit and vegetables. Manufacturers meanwhile often exhibited agricultural machinery and other equipment.

Fairs were highly anticipated affairs, noted Center for Agricultural History and Rural Studies, with farm families adjusting their work schedules in order to attend the

fair. “For many people, the fair would mark the first time they saw electric lights and airplanes, and it helped farm families adapt to changing mores and accepted forms of entertainment, such as vaudeville.”

Other amusements at the county fairs of the latter 19th century grew to include everything from games of chance to fireworks. Crowds were frequently drawn to permanent grandstands for sporting events like harness racing and horse-pulling contests. Horse-racing proved to be one of the most popular and controversial activities, especially women’s horseracing, according to the Center for Agricultural History and Rural Studies.

County fairs were “a welcome distraction from the normally quit rural life,” observes author Mary Shafter in the book Rural America, A Pictorial Folk Memory.

“Children showed off their budding skills in animal care and husbandry; mothers participated in contests pitting their favorite food recipes against those of neighbors near and far; and fathers entered their favorite draft animals in friendly competition against their peers in weight-pulling contests.”

During the 1930s, Life magazine brought national attention to the county fair with a major issue on the subject. The September 26, 1938 edition paid tribute to the “County Fair in America”, and further established the local fair as a summer or early fall event.

Going to the county fair “was something your family did,” says Reed. “I still look forward to it every year. There’s something new every year and it’s tradition.”

3. Mangoes Are high in vitamins A and C. They’re also high in fiber and potassium, and low in calories, fat, sodium and cholesterol.

4. Bell peppers Sweet bell peppers are low in calories and high in vitamins.

They also contain phytochemicals called carotenoids, which have been associated with reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration, and some cancers.

5. Beans and Legumes Are good sources of antioxidants for cell health, as well as B vitamins, folate, calcium, iron, potassium and protein. They contain high levels of soluble fiber, associated with heart health, lower cholesterol levels, blood sugar regulation and weight loss.

6. Leafy Greens Are easy to grow in your summer garden and are full of the cellprotecting and repairing antioxidants, vitamins C and A, and contain protein and iron, as well as B vitamins and fiber. They also contain a lot of water, which will help keep you hydrated.

Tips for Perfect Courtesy of www.realsimple.com Don’t Blow Your Budget on Meat Steven Raichlen, author of The Barbecue Bible and How to Grill, suggests skipping the porterhouse in favor of a great, inexpensive skirt or flank steak, forgoing boneless chicken breasts for cheaper, flavorful legs and thighs, and tossing back the priciest catch of the day in order to net yourself darker, grill-friendly seafood like mackerel or blue fish.

Dress Up the Old Standbys Rick Browne, author of 1,001 Best Grilling Recipes and former host of Barbecue America says if you’re sticking with the tried-andtrue standards (chicken, burgers, hot dogs, bratwursts), add a simple, inexpensive element to elevate the flavor. “Stuff some blue cheese, chopped bacon, or barbecue sauce inside your burger patties before they hit the grill. Split your hot dogs lengthwise, add some cheddar in the middle and wrap the whole thing in bacon. Or let your chicken steep overnight in your favorite marinade.

Make a little Extra When you’re planning out your portions, be sure to grill enough for leftovers. Barbecued leftovers are still tasty the next day, to reheat, sprinkle the meat with water or barbecue sauce, wrap it in foil, and cook over indirect heat for 5 minutes.

DIY Rubs and Sauces Why buy at the store what you can make at home? “It’s super easy to make your own rubs and barbecue sauces,” says Raichlen. Rubs are essentially spices in a bowl that you can mix together with your fingers, and most sauces start with a basic foundation of ketchup or tomato sauce and grow from there. Find some recipes that strike your palate’s fancy, and test them out next time you fire up the grill.

Don’t Go Overboard With Fuel Browne points out that many of us pour way too much charcoal onto our grills. Three pounds should cook any meal for four to six people. If you’re using propane and cooking brisket or pork loin, you only need to put it on high for the first five minutes after the food hits the grill. After that, turn it on low and let it cook slowly.

Befriend Your Butcher If you’re looking for the advance scoop on when your favorite cuts of meat will be going on sale, make friends with the people at your supermarket’s butcher counter. They’re definitely the ones with the inside track.

Invest in a Quality Grill You don’t need to spring for a grill with loads of extra bells and whistles, but you do want to make sure you’re getting one that won’t fizzle out in two years. Browne recommends buying just enough grill for what your family uses—possibly going for a bigger grill surface if you entertain a lot. And you’ll want enough space on your grill surface to multi-task (think chicken on one side and corn on the other).

Treat Your Grill Well You want the investment you made in your grill to last as long as possible, so make maintenance a priority. Clean it off thoroughly before and after each use, get rid of the ashes when they’ve cooled, and oil the grate before and after each use. “If you take care of the grill, it could last forever,” says Raichlen. “I know some people whose grills are going on 25 years.”

Minimize Your Accessories Don’t go crazy stocking up on complicated grilling equipment.

Raichlen and Browne agree that you only need two key grill accessories—a thermometer and tongs. Get a good, instant-read meat thermometer to ensure you’re always biting into food that’s cooked to the doneness you prefer. And snag a quality pair of long-handled, spring-loaded tongs, preferably with a scalloped end.

Do Your Homework “The best way to save money is to not burn things and to do it right,” says Raichlen. If you’re a beginning griller, arm yourself with some knowledge before lighting that fire. Check out free how-to videos online that offer step-by-step instructions on achieving grilling perfection (YouTube is a good place to start), or invest in a good instructional book to arm yourself with the techniques you need to make the tasty, grilled magic happen.

Stir together honey, soy sauce, garlic powder, pepper and lemon juice. Heat a charcoal or gas grill. Place the salmon fillet skin-side down on the grill. Cook on high heat about 5 minutes, then flip over. Brush the glaze on the already-grilled side of the salmon and cook an additional 5 minutes, or until salmon is almost cooked through. Flip the salmon again and brush the other side with the glaze. Cook an additional 1 or 2 more minutes. (Don’t cook too long or the glaze will burn.)

Refreshing, quenching, cooling, satisfying. Pleasant words that bring soothing images to mind. However, during the heat of the summer, we may feel anything but refreshed, quenched or cooled. We may even feel some symptoms of dehydration; dry mouth, headache, unusual hunger between meals, irritable, weak, dizzy, nausea, muscle cramps, confusion, sluggish and darkened urine. What can we do to prevent dehydration? DRINK WATER!! Simple, plain water offers profound benefits for our bodies!

Why do we need water?

Let’s take a closer look at some of the things that water does for us. We are made up mostly of water, over 60 percent of our total body weight, in fact. Every part of our body depends on those little H2O molecules. Water is actually a nutrient and without it, we wouldn’t survive more than a few short days. It’s a wonderful delivery system that carries other vital nutrients and oxygen into our cells so that we have energy to get out of bed, and do what we do, all day long. It helps us to blink, talk, swallow, breathe and smell. It regulates our body temperature, helps our skin to be soft and smooth, filters waste, cushions our brain and helps all of our bendy parts to bend. And should we need to lose a little weight, it can help with that too. (Try reaching for a glass of water instead of a snack between meals. It really works!)

How much water do we need?

Because we constantly lose water through sweating, urine, and even through breathing, we need to replenish several times throughout the day. The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake for men is roughly about 13 cups of liquid a day. For women, about 9 cups is recommended.1 According to the USDA, “If you drink fluids when you feel thirsty and have beverages with meals, you should get enough water to keep you hydrated.”2 Obviously we need more if we’re out in the heat, exercising, or doing additional strenuous activities, usually around 2 or 3 cups more for minimal activity. For intense activity, we need to hydrate even more, before and after, possibly with a drink containing a little sodium.

And let’s not forget to drink while at the pool or the ocean.

Sometimes we don’t realize our need to drink water when we’re surrounded by water. Also, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need additional fluids to stay hydrated.

It’s easy to determine how much water you need by paying attention to urine output, which should be light in color. If it’s dark or has an odor, go drink some water!

Certainly, there are some physical conditions, like congestive heart failure, kidney failure, peripheral vascular disease, liver failure, etc. where fluid intake is restricted and must be managed under the direction of a physician.

But what if I don’t like water?

• Fresh foods high in water content can be a wonderful way to increase water intake. Examples include; watermelon, citrus fruits, grapes, apples, papaya, strawberries, apricots, cherries, carrots, bell peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach.

So, determine your water intake needs, carry a water bottle with you and keep track of how much you’re drinking. Drink when you’re thirsty and with meals. Using Your Subconscious Mind to Improve Life

Have you ever dreamed you were being chased, only to find that you were running ineffectively in slow motion? Or that you were taking a test that you weren’t prepared for? Dreams seem to be a strange phenomenon that happen randomly and without reason – or do they?

People have pondered the meaning of dreams for centuries. A source of inspiration, guidance, prediction, and problem-solving, dreams are a common experience to us all. We’ve heard the expression, “I’ll sleep on it” when someone is making an important decision. By tuning in to our dreams, we can glean wisdom from our subconscious mind that is alerting us to helpful solutions.

There are primary dream symbols which usually have the same meanings. Some common themes are as follows: • A house: You. A house falling down could warn that you need to take better care of yourself. A large house could indicate great potential and awareness of opportunities.

• Any vehicle: Also the self, but more specifically your mode of traveling in your daily life. An airplane is your spiritual “plane”, while a motorcycle or bicycle means you need more balance in your life.

• Teeth falling out: signals that you need a boost of selfconfidence.

Once you become comfortable with the meaning of various symbols in your dreams, you can then use this knowledge to make yourself happier and boost your problem-solving skills.

Here are some tips for utilizing your dream power: 1. Keep a dream journal. Write down your dream the second you wake up. If you wait, you’ll lose most of the details of your dream.

A Canadian study found that people who review the content of their dreams over a week’s time see clear solutions to the problems they faced seven days earlier.1 2. Realize that everything in the dream is you. People in your dream usually represent personality traits within yourself that you’ve projected onto them.

3. To ease nightmares, sleep on your right side. This from Turkish researchers who studied sleeping positions and how they relate to sleep quality. These researchers found that those who slept on their right have mellower ones, with themes of relief, joy, peace and love.2 4. Deliberately program your dreams for answers. Before going to sleep, take a few deep breaths, relax, and bring the problem to mind.

Then tell yourself that you will dream the solution, and that you will remember it when you awake. Again, remember to write down the dream and every detail you can remember immediately upon waking.

Your dreams help you look at the thought patterns that are

governing your life. So the next time you dream about being chased, know that you are avoiding looking at a problem. You are putting yourself through unnecessary anguish and pain. Remember to turn around and confront whatever aspect of self is chasing you, make peace with it, and know that the answer will come and the drama will end. Sweet dreams.

Investing in Your Children’s Eyes

As kids and adolescents in our area begin school again, it is important to ensure they are in the best physical health possible. Proper health allows

By Clinton Duncan M.D. them to focus on learning and growing intellectually both in the classroom and in other venues of their lives. One area of health which is particularly important for students, and permits success in school and other extracurricular activities, is good eye health.

Comprehensive eye exams are one of the most important investments a parent can make for their family. These exams are especially important in an era when not being able to see the board from the back of the classroom is no longer the only impediment of good vision. Smartphones and tablets are becoming an important learning tool that are used daily by all students. It now seems eyes are looking at an electronic device more than just about any other learning tool. Who reads actual books anymore? Good near and distance vision is crucial to excel in the classroom. It is estimated that 75-80 percent of learning is visual in nature. If a student is not seeing well, he or she will likely have some difficulty in school.

Why comprehensive eye exams matter It is estimated that one in four children has an undiagnosed vision problem simply because they may not recognize that their eyesight

isn’t optimal or is changing. Children may not realize that they are having problems because they may not know what is normal, especially if the issue has been present from birth or is long-standing. Teenagers may be embarrassed or hesitant to admit to problems because of not wanting corrective lenses or the perception of somehow being different from others.

Unfortunately, parents and educators often incorrectly assume that if a child passes a school screening, their vision is fine. School screenings are a wonderful service but can miss incredibly important eye conditions and disorders. A full eye exam by an eye professional is essential. In addition to complaints about not seeing well, parents can look for other warning signs and/or symptoms of eye problems. Some of these include chronic redness, tearing, headaches or rubbing the eyes. Other tell-tale signs of vision problems include covering one eye, deviation of one or both of the eyes, tilting the head to one side, losing place often when reading, holding a book super close to the face, or only being able to see things at a distance.

As you complete the back to school check-list with your family, don’t forgot to schedule your comprehensive eye exam appointment.

Aging Does Not Need to Equal Cognitive Decline

For many, many years, the medical field believed that the human brain had its greatest growth spurt between birth and three years; with the number of synapses for each neuron in the cerebral cortex increasing from around 2,500 to 15,000 during that incredibly short period of time. Once thought to be limited to the very young, studies over the past 30 years have shown that new neural connections can form at any stage in life and when stimulated appropriately, these connections can form significantly, even at an advanced age.

What is Brain Plasticity?

Originally called Neural Plasticity, evolving into the term Neuroplasticity, and finally, Brain Plasticity; Brain plasticity is one of the most important aspects in the field of neuroscience. It is the ability of the brain to heal itself using a combination of magical tools the body provides.

Specifically, it is the strengthening or weakening of nerve connections in the brain, based on outside stimuli such as memory forming (emotional) experiences, learning something new (education) and brain stimulation activities (both auditory and visual). It refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses due to changes in behavior, environment, neural processes, thinking , and emotions - as well as to changes resulting from bodily injury. (Pascual) Changes to the brain cells involve physical alterations where the new pathways are formed (axonal sprouting), helping to form new nerve endings that connect to other pathways. Additionally, the body can remove connections that have not been used for a significant length of time, (synaptic pruning) allowing more useful ones to be strengthened. Neuroscientific research indicates that experience can actually change both the brain’s

physical structure (anatomy) and functional organization (physiology). (Chaney) Etymology of Brain Plasticity and Brain Training In 1793, an Italian anatomist Michele Vicenzo Malacarne conducted experiments in which he would take a pair of animals and train one of them extensively over many years. When the animals died, he dissected them. He discovered that the cerebellum was significantly larger in the trained animal, than the untrained pair. These experiments were largely forgotten for over a hundred years, when in 1890, philosopher trained physician, William James (known as “the Father of Psychology”) used the term ‘Plasticity’ in the book, “The Principles of Psychology”.

The idea of neuroplasticity was not widely accepted by neuroscientists and until the technology for true brain scanning became available to researchers, was largely discounted. Although there was some advancement, the next significant breakthrough came in the 1960’s when Michael

Merzinich, along with several other prominent researchers, began to develop brain stimulation games and document their findings. In the 1980’s, the most basic format of a brain fitness program was launched. The concept behind this program was to put the brain on a fitness program, much like working out the body in the gym. The program has evolved dramatically over the past 30+ years and is now available for daily use on a home computer or electronic device.

Brain Training in Southern Utah Brain Fitness training is crucial for the well-being of the ‘grey matter’ in our heads.

The maxim ‘use it or lose it’ is appropriate for this subject specifically. When embarking on any new task, there is always a period of time where individuals feel inadequate.

This is because with each new task, we must redevelop the neuro-pathways we may never have used, or simply haven’t used in years.

Tips for Summer Grandparenting

Many grandparents will be hosting their children’s children (grandkids) this summer for anywhere from a couple of days to a month or more. Grandparents may wonder “What will I ever do to keep them entertained?” Here are a few ideas adapted from Penn State University Extension to help strengthen relationships between grandparents and grandchildren in meaningful ways.

Prepare the house for the upcoming visit.

1. Ask the parents ahead of time for the titles of some favorite books enjoyed by the child/youth. Check them out of the local library to have on hand. Plan to have the child read to you parts of the book.

2. Set out some family photos or photo albums to discuss. Be prepared to share stories and be open to answer questions.

– Teach your grandchild a hobby you love: crocheting, guitar, woodworking, cooking, etc.

If you choose to watch one or two movies together, make it a bonding experience with popcorn and a list of things to watch for in the movie. For example, how many times will “Actor X” use the word “like”? or “List each food or beverage seen during the movie.”

Youth today are used to A LOT of on-going stimulation to their senses. Grandparents can help slow the pace or change the pace by integrating a variety of activities that are enjoyable and also teach some life lessons or strengthen family ties. Planning ahead will make it run more smoothly and you might even give the parents and your grandchildren a hint of what to expect when they visit. You might even challenge (invite) your grandchild to bring a game or activity to share with you.

However, summer does allow a little time to review finances. Here are some tips to get you started: Savings. Do you have six months of savings built up for an emergency or emergency fund? We like to advise our clients of the important of a savings account in case of life surprises that may come at you, such as loss of income or health problems that may impact your monthly cash flow. with the highest interest rate first. However, if you are making a payment on something like a car or piece of furniture that has a shorter payoff period, you might want to do that first. Then you can retire that loan, which allows additional funds to go towards paying off the higher debts quicker. Obviously, paying off the highest interest first usually makes sense, but sometimes we have to look at the payoff and develop a plan to succeed sooner with debt elimination.

It’s wise to look at improving your debt, no matter your age, in order to insure your income or cash flow and or long term retirement savings. One key is to make sure, under today’s mortgage rates, that you are at the lowest rate possible under the current credit climate.

For my older clients who are making payments each month on credit cards or other commercial balances, I am a fan of a cash out on a re-finance in order to pay off all monthly commercial debt.

By re-financing the home and pulling out additional dollars, you may be able to pay off high credit card balances and/or monthly payments, as well as car or other loans.

As a senior citizen living on a fixed income, it’s important to have the additional funds on which to live. The additional loan amount on your mortgage will most likely not add any additional payment with a re-finance, and you can use the additional funds to retire these other monthly bills.

For my younger clients, I am less likely to advise the same resolution, because, simply put, these clients are more inclined to re-charge the same amount of debt and be in the same situation within a year. The key is to make sure they re-finance and keep all closing costs to zero or at a minimum so that the benefits don’t get eaten up. It is vital that these younger clients are maximizing their IRAs or 401Ks before looking at retiring a mortgage.

Some clients put every extra dollar towards their mortgage payment, but more and more people are choosing a 15 year fixed loan over a 30 year fixed loan. The logic behind paying off the mortgage early seems sound, but in reality, if you are not maximizing your IRAs or 401ks, you are using after-tax dollars to make extra payments on your mortgage. It’s more important to save and allow pre-taxed dollars to grow. I personally believe you grow wealth more quickly this way than you would paying off the mortgage.

Annual Festival of Homes in Iron County Begins September 4th

By Iron County Home Builders Staff The Iron County Home Builders Association’s (ICHBA) annual Festival of Homes will begin on Sept 4th. This will be the 20th year holding a home show, with the first one held in 1995. The Festival of Homes is a showcase for ICHBA Builder Members to display their best work for the public.

Builder Members are joined by Associate Members in providing very attractive and innovative new homes. Along with new homes, this year the Festival will include luxury cabins and a special feature home -rebuilt after being destroyed by fire. It will present 13 homes constructed by association members that incorporate some of the best in home design, technology, materials, décor, and building techniques. Beginning at 1:00 pm on Sep 4, 2014, the Festival will continue

through Labor Day September 7th, then begin again on Friday September 11th and run until Sunday evening, September 13th.

Tickets will be available for purchase for $10 each at branches of State Bank of Southern Utah beginning August 31st, at the festival website: cedarcityfestivalofhomes.com, and during the Festival at the Coldwell Banker Advantage office downtown Cedar City.

Visitors will be able to vote during the Festival of Homes for the best home, best interior design, and best landscaping.
